Newport Harbor welcomes cruise ships throughout the year with the majority of visits from September through early November. Larger ships anchor in the harbor and tender passengers to Perrotti Park while smaller vessels dock at the South Alofsin Pier at Fort Adams State Park.

Discover Newport , the official convention and visitors bureau for Newport and Bristol counties, has published the 2023 Cruise Ship Schedule.

In 2023, Newport Harbor will welcome more than ninety cruise ships between April – November, including the iconic Queen Mary II on Thursday, July 6.

Larger ships anchor in the harbor and tender passengers to Perotti Park while smaller vessels dock at the South Alofsin Pier at Fort Adams State Park.

Newport: tourist information

Thirty miles south of Providence lies Newport, the fabled resort city of America's Cup yacht racing and magnificent Gilded Age mansions. At the turn of the 20th century, one needed a blue-blood pedigree and millions in the bank to be invited inside the palatial Bellevue Avenue dwellings owned by America's elite. Today, nearly one dozen of these remarkable "summer cottages" are open to the public for touring, and Newport itself has opened wide its gates to welcome all who desire a leisurely, fun-filled and enriching vacation. Though yachting and the Gilded Age made Newport world-famous, the city is also renowned for its delightful mix of Colonial heritage, beautiful beaches, lively waterfront and cultural attractions. Within the last decade, a rich and varied schedule of year-round festivals and happenings has helped Newport evolve from a summer vacation spot into a four-season destination. Classical, folk and jazz music festivals highlight the summer months, followed by "Harvest-by-the-Sea" in October, December's "Christmas in Newport" celebration and the "Newport Winter Festival" in February. Within Rhode Island accessing Newport via two bridges, traverse the brilliant blue of Narragansett Bay to arrive in legendary Newport, whose stunning coastline, glittering harbor and charming Colonial seaport have lured the world’s wealthiest people for more than 150 years. This is the home of fabled Gilded Age mansions, world-class yachting, renowned music and film festivals, fine dining, spirited nightlife and shopping galore. Newport is home to the International Tennis Hall of Fame and Museum, where the greatest players in the history of the sport are enshrined. One hundred years of America’s Cup yacht racing has left Newport with a legacy as the Sailing Capital of America. Sailing lessons, yachting charters and fishing trips are abundant here. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, Newport Harbor is packed with so many boats of all shapes and sizes, that it seems like they could be used as stepping stones to cross from one side to the other!

Viking Tours – Newport Cruise Ship Tours

Newport Cruise Ship Tours

Newport is referred to as tender port – there is no Cruise Ship Dock in Newport and your cruise ship will anchor in Narragansett Bay and passengers will come ashore in the smaller tender boats. These shore excursions in Newport can be a wonderful experience when traveling to Rhode Island. Travel time from the ship’s anchorage to the pier in Newport is 10 – 20 minutes, depending on anchorage location. Most of the time Cruise Ship Tender boats will begin bringing passengers into shore after 8:00-8:30 a.m.

Our trolley tours depart from the Newport Transportation Center at bus platform #3 (Previously the Gateway Center), 23 America’s Cup Avenue. Which is just one short block north of the cruise ship tender landing!  After reaching the dock head to your left and look for the Brenton & Newport Marriott Hotel.  The Newport Bus & Transportation Center is adjacent to the Newport Marriott Hotel.  We pick up on the backside of the building alongside Americas Cup Avenue across from Cardines Baseball Field.

On days when cruise ships are in port, and since Newport is a tender port, some guests might experience brief delays getting off of the cruise ship and into Newport for selected Newport cruise ship tours. Unfortunately, we cannot accept your ticket for a tour time other than the one purchased.   We also sell out our Trolley tours on most days regularly but dates in which Large Cruise Ships are in we generally sell out well in the future.  On most Newport cruise ship tours days we try to add additional tour times to our trolleys to accommodate these passengers. Newport is very busy in the fall, even on days without Newport cruise ship tours.

Tours with Mansion Visits

For trolley tours that include a mansion visit, there may be a wait in line to enter the mansion. Once inside, the normal time of the walking tour through the mansion is 45 minutes – 1 hour. Please note that our Tour #3 (Vanderbilts 2 house Newport Tour) is usually only available at 12:30 and on a very busy day, with traffic, the trolley may not be back to the Newport Bus & Transportation Center before 5:00. In general, this may be too late for you to catch that last tender boat, so we do not recommend this tour option for cruise ship tour passengers. Although we try our best to keep on schedule, we are not responsible for “missed connections” due to traffic, mansion lines, etc.

Below you will find an easy to read, comprehensive schedule of Viking Tours Newport trolley tours and the rates associated with each tour. You will further find season black out dates and the normal schedule on which all the tours are based. Public tours leave from the Newport Transportation Center at bus platform #3 (formerly the Gateway Visitor Center), 23 America’s Cup Avenue (next to the Marriott Hotel).

Cruise Ships

Things the Mariner should know about Cruise Ships visiting Newport:

• Busiest months are September and October
• All large Cruise ships anchor in "Anchorage "D" west of Goat Island
• All Cruise Ships utilizing Anchorage "D" tender passengers to and from Perrotti Park
• Tender drivers are NOT familiar with the local AREA/ Be alert for sudden changes in direction
• Cruise Ships at anchor can and do use propulsion to maintain a lee for their tendering operations
• The USCG Captain of the Port imposes a 300 yard Safety and Security Zone around all Cruise ships in the Newport Anchorage. Mariners are advised to use caution while transiting this area

Learn How to Run For Office This June

City of Newport to Host Candidate Information Sessions   NEWPORT, R.I. (WEDNESDAY, MAY 22, 2024) – Are you thinking about running for office? The City of Newport’s Canvassing Office will be hosting a series of informational sessions for all those curious about how to throw their hat in the ring this November. The information sessions will provide aspiring candidates with an overview of how to declare and run for office – from Newport’s non-partisan City Council and School Committee to the General Assembly and beyond.

Here’s Your Chance to Climb Miantonomi Park Tower

City of Newport to Open Historic Tower for Memorial Day   NEWPORT, R.I. (TUESDAY, MAY 21, 2024) – Newport residents and visitors are once again being invited to climb to the top of Newport as the Miantonomi Park Tower opens to the public on Monday, May 27th from 12:30 to 3 p.m. in observance of Memorial Day.  This event, which is being organized by the City, Miantonomi Park Commission, and the Aquidneck Land Trust, aims to recognize the historical significance of the tower as a memorial to the Veterans of World War I.   Completed in 1929; the 100-foot stone tower was designed by William Kendall of the renowned architectural firm McKim, Mead & White and stands atop one of the highest points in Newport. 

Newport Businesses to Benefit from new State Tax Exemption

$50,000 Tangible Tax Exemption Set to Take Effect July 1st    NEWPORT, R.I. (WEDNESDAY, MAY 15, 2024) – Newport business owners are poised to save on one of their annual tax bills as a statewide exemption on the tangible tax rate is set to take effect in July. The program, which was passed last year by the General Assembly and signed into law by Gov. McKee, provides a $50,000 exemption to all tangible tax accounts beginning in the 2024 tax year beginning July 1 st . The exemption would apply to all tangible personal property used in day-to-day business operations including assets such as furniture, fixtures, and equipment.

Canvassing Authority Meeting

The Newport Canvassing Authority  is charged with conducting all elections for the City of Newport.

Under the direction of the State Board of Elections, and in cooperation with the Secretary of State, the Canvassing Authority is involved in all phases of the electoral process, from voter registration to tallying the votes after the polls close on election day.
