Located about 158 miles from Virginia Beach, Fredericksburg is typically about a 2.5-hour drive up I-64W and I-95N. Because of its central location, this is also one of the best day trips from Washington DC for those visiting the nation’s capital. 

Once you’re there, park the car and enjoy walking around Downtown Fredericksburg . This 40-block area is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its hundreds of 18th- and 19th-Century buildings.

You can stroll the downtown streets to enjoy shopping in antique or boutique shops, get a bite to eat at a variety of locally-owned restaurants, check out various art galleries, or just take in the atmosphere.

For Civil War history enthusiasts, walk up to Marye’s Heights where you’ll find what remains of the Fredericksburg Battlefield . While much of the terrain has been built over, the Sunken Road and Marye’s Heights are two iconic locations that help tell the tale of one of the worst Union defeats during the war.

Be sure to stop by the statue of the Angel of Marye’s Heights to pay tribute to a man who helped a great many wounded and dying soldiers that day.

Beyond the battlefield, you can continue your walking tour of the city by heading over to the pretty campus of the University of Mary Washington to admire its many Jeffersonian-style buildings of red brick with white columns. 

While on campus, you should also seek out the bust of James Farmer , a former professor at UMW and one of the Big Six Civil Rights leaders alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Shenandoah National Park is one of the best day trips from Virginia Beach that offers stunning natural scenery, many hiking opportunities, the chance for wildlife sightings, waterfall viewing, and a relaxing escape. 

Shenandoah National Park extends across 197,411 acres in the state of Virginia through the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The trip from Virginia Beach to Shenandoah’s Rockfish Gap entrance is just over a three-hour drive and just under 200 miles, making it easily reachable for a day trip. 

While you could spend days exploring the park, easy access to the park’s main features and stunning views makes it a fantastic option for a day trip.

Once you reach Shenandoah, there are tons of options for outdoor adventure and scenic drives. A drive along Skyline Drive is one of the best things to do in Shenandoah. 

The 105-mile Skyline Drive through the park takes a minimum of three hours to complete, so if planning a day visit you will need to add an additional three hours on your way back to Virginia Beach. 

A better option may be to drive from the Rockfish Gap Station to the Thornton Gap Station, which has a driving time of an hour and a half.

There are tons of overlooks that you can stop at with stunning views, so even if you are not a hiker you can still enjoy the stunning natural beauty of the area.

If you are a hiker, you will find many hikes for any skill level. The Frazier Discovery Trail and Blackrock Summit Trails are easy hikes that can be done on a day trip. 

From the Thornton Gap entrance, you can also take the short drive outside of Shenandoah National Park to Luray Caverns to enjoy a self-guided tour through columns of stalactites and stalagmites. 

So, whether you are an avid hiker or not, Shenandoah National Park will not disappoint!

Tucked 4 hours away from Virginia Beach sits a gem of many sorts: Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. But it’s only KIND of in West Virginia!

The Point at Harper’s Ferry is known as a triangle to view three states: Virginia, West Virginia, AND Maryland! It’s not every day you can hit a unique landmark like that on a day trip.

Aside from the fun facts, Harpers Ferry is surprisingly beautiful. Historical architecture is pleasant to admire on a stroll, or for longer stops at museums such as the John Brown Wax Museum . This is one of the most highly-rated museums in Harpers Ferry.

Surrounding all of this history is the Blue Ridge Mountains . Visitors can enjoy active hikes, especially the famous view from Maryland Heights Overlook . It’s crazy to know you are in such a historical town surrounded by a dramatic mountainous landscape.

Conveniently, the C&O Trail runs through Harpers Ferry to downtown D.C., so if you are looking to extend your day trip longer, this may be a unique option for you!

Parking lots fill quickly in Downtown Harpers Ferry so visitors may benefit from the shuttle service, included with the entrance fee per vehicle. The National Parks pass can alternatively be used (and I recommend it!! Bang for the buck.) Shuttles do not run 24 hours, so check the website in advance when planning your trip. Weekends at Harper’s Ferry draw high crowds.

Harpers Ferry is 252 miles from Virginia Beach and approximately 4 hours by car. Though it’s a little further away, it is one of the best weekend trips from Virginia Beach.

There, you’ll learn about the many trials and tribulations the brothers faced when creating the first airplane and can see where the first flights took place!

The Outer Banks is well known for its wild horses in Corolla . They are descendants of the Spanish Mustangs brought by the explorers over 500 years ago! Although it’s illegal to be within 50 feet of wild horses, several companies offer tours where you can take pictures of the horses while learning more about their history.

As the third oldest town in North Carolina, Beaufort has a rich history including early settlers, pirates, and time as a fishing town. The town has a well-preserved historic district with quaint streets that are perfect for an afternoon stroll. 

There are many beautifully restored homes and buildings that you can tour with the Beaufort Historic Society. A visit to the NC Maritime Museum is another great option that explores some of the unique shipbuilding and pirate history of the town’s maritime heritage, and best of all, it’s free!

The Best Day Trips from Williamsburg, VA

1. jamestown, virginia.

One of the best day trips from Williamsburg is heading over to Jamestown. Along with Colonial Williamsburg and Yorktown, these three sites make up the Historic Triangle of Virginia.

This is a popular place to visit for history buffs and those looking to learn more about America’s colonial roots.

As the site of the first permanent English settlement in North America,  Historic Jamestowne  offers a glimpse into the past and the struggles of the colonists who arrived in 1607. It’s where the first English settlement was built and is now home to various ancient artifacts, live reenactments, educational classes, and so much more.

Visitors can explore the ruins of James Fort and the Jamestown Church, see significant structures like the Ambler Mansion ruins and Governor Harvey House, and learn about the site’s history and preservation efforts at the Voorhees Archaearium.

The site also offers monuments, including the Tercentenary Monument, General Assembly Monument, and John Smith and Pocahontas statues.

And since it’s just a 15-minute drive from downtown, it’s an excellent addition to 5 days in Williamsburg itinerary !

2. Yorktown, Virginia

Just a 20-minute drive east of Williamsburg, Yorktown makes up the third point of the Historic Triangle of Virginia and is a great place for a day trip for those interested in the American Revolution.

Today, visitors can explore the  American Revolution Museum at Yorktown , the  Yorktown Victory Monument , and the  Yorktown Battlefield  to learn about the town’s role in the war. 

The town also offers charming colonial-era architecture, including nine pre-Revolutionary buildings, shops, and restaurants in the Riverwalk section along the waterfront. 

This is a great place for those who enjoy learning about history and those looking to gain some knowledge and insight into the American Revolution’s final battle!

3. Newport News, Virginia

Newport News must be on your bucket list for those looking to escape Williamsburg and explore an area known for its outdoor recreational activities and countless parks.

Newport News is only 30 minutes away from Williamsburg and is a great place to visit on a day trip for those looking to stroll around parks, bike rides, or even go camping. 

One of the most popular parks in the area is  Newport News Park , and it’s a great place to spend several hours outdoors enjoying different activities.

4. Richmond, Virginia

Richmond is Virginia’s capital and home to a vibrant art scene, countless museums, and several parks and botanical gardens. The city has great shopping and restaurants throughout. 

For those looking to escape Williamsburg for the day and would like to experience a lively city, head to Richmond. 

When visiting the area, check out the  Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens . These gardens are whimsical, to say the least. This is a great place to take in the sights of countless plants, vibrant flowers blossoming, and butterflies roaming throughout. 

Once you have finished up at the gardens, head over to one of the many popular museums in the area. There are countless to choose from, including the  Virginia Museum of Fine Arts , the  Virginia Holocaust Museum , and the  Science Museum of Virginia . This is an excellent way to spend some time in the Richmond area and expand your knowledge on your particular interest!

For those interested in shopping in the area, head to the  Short Pump Town Center  or  Stony Point Fashion Park . Both of these areas have countless stores to stop by and check out!

5. Norfolk, Virginia

As one of the oldest cities in America, Norfolk offers visitors a glimpse into the colonial era and the city’s pivotal role in American history.

The city is home to the largest naval base in the world, as well as numerous museums, galleries, and performing arts venues, including the renowned Chrysler Museum of Art and the Norfolk Botanical Garden.

And it’s unique architecture, from Federal rowhouses to Art Deco buildings, provides a visual feast for architecture enthusiasts.

Visitors can enjoy the city’s parks and recreation areas, catch a game at Harbor Park or explore the city’s waterfront, where you can go boating, fishing, and beach lounging.

The city’s revitalized downtown area is filled with restaurants, bars, and shops, making it the perfect place to spend a day or evening.

Virginia Beach is an excellent place for a day trip. It has a fabulous boardwalk, great beaches, and delicious eating places. 

We recommend heading to Virginia Beach for a laid-back day relaxing by the ocean! Once you are tired of soaking in the beach sun, head to the  Virginia Beach Boardwalk,  where you can stroll down its 3-mile path. 

When you are ready to grab a bite to eat, stop by  Waterman’s Surfside Grille  for their infamous orange crush drink and scrumptious crab cakes or she-crab soup!

Distance:  1 hour and 10 minutes

7. Charlottesville, Virginia

Charlottesville, Virginia, is just under 2 hours from Williamsburg and is a great place to visit for those looking for beautiful mountain views, incredible wineries and breweries nearby, awesome hikes close by, and the town is full of history. 

One of the best activities to do in the Charlottesville area is to hike and take in the stunning views of the Appalachian Mountains. 

Check out the  Ragged Mountain Natural Area Trail  for a moderate hike less than 7 miles long. This is a great trail for those looking to spend a few hours outside burning calories before heading to breweries or wineries for the day!

Be sure to pack your  favorite energy bars for hiking  to stay healthy and happy while on the trails. 

If hiking isn’t your thing, check out  Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello ! Thomas Jefferson designed and built this charming property and lived there until he passed away. This is a great place to learn more about our 3rd President and marvel at his beautiful home.

Once you have finished your morning activity, head to one of the popular breweries or wineries in the area for delicious drinks and a memorable experience. We recommend checking out  Starr Hill Brewery  or  Gabriele Rausse Winery !

8. Winchester, Virginia

As the county seat of Frederick County, Winchester has played a pivotal role in American history, from its early European exploration and settlement to its involvement in the French and Indian War, Revolutionary War, and Civil War.

Visitors can explore the seven major battlefields in the original Frederick County and nearby areas, as well as other historical sites such as Fort Loudoun, built under the supervision of George Washington, Stonewall Jackson Headquarters Museum, and the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields National Historic District. 

Winchester also boasts a thriving arts and culture scene, with the annual Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival and National Skirmish competitions.

9. georgetown, d.c..

Another of the best day trips from Williamsburg, VA, is to Georgetown in Washington D.C. This area is extremely popular because it is home to Georgetown University, one of the oldest Catholic colleges in the United States.

Besides its famous college, Georgetown is popular for its awesome shopping, restaurants, and lively nightlife. 

For those looking to get out and explore the area, stop by  Clyde’s of Georgetown  for unforgettable cocktails and delicious American bites.

Distance:  2 hours and 30 minutes

10. Annapolis, Maryland

Annapolis, Maryland, is another great day trip from Williamsburg. This town is known for its coastal views, home to the United States Naval Academy, its colonial architecture, and terrific seafood. 

For those visiting the area for the first time, head to  The Colonial Annapolis Historic District , where you can take in the charming colonial architecture and learn more about this town’s history and roots. 

Once you have finished learning about colonial America and the city of Annapolis, head to one of the most popular restaurants in the area, the  Boatyard Bar & Grill . This is a great place to grab delicious seafood and sip cold drinks!

11. Raleigh, North Carolina

For those looking to head on a day trip out of state and would like to explore a city in North Carolina, you must check out Raleigh. 

Raleigh is known for its awesome museums, fantastic bars and restaurants, many places to shop, and for being the state capital of North Carolina. 

If you are interested in museums, check out the  North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences  or the  North Carolina Museum of Art . Both of these are great places to spend a few hours learning about various subjects and exploring exhibits that enthrall you. 

For those interested in eating and drinking your way through the city, check out some of Raleigh’s most popular establishments, such as the  Morgan Street Food Hall ,  Beasley’s Chicken, and Honey , or the  Raleigh Beer Garden !

If you would like to stay in the Raleigh area for a bit longer to explore all the city offers, stay at the  Renaissance Raleigh North Hills Hotel  for its incredible aesthetic and amenities.

12. Baltimore, Maryland

One of the furthest day trips from Williamsburg destinations is Baltimore, Maryland. This city has a handful of professional sports teams, delicious food, and many incredible landmarks and attractions. 

For sports lovers, the city of Baltimore is home to the Baltimore Ravens football team and the Orioles baseball team. This is a great place to catch a live game and cheer on Baltimore teams with the locals. 

Stop by the  National Aquarium  or the  Baltimore Museum of Art  if sporting events aren’t your thing. Both of these attractions are very popular amongst visitors and locals alike. They are great places to visit for those looking for a fun and unique experience. 

After you have hit a sporting event or gone to one of Baltimore’s top attractions, head to  G&M Restaurant  for crab cakes that will blow your mind.

13. Ocean City, Maryland

For those looking to reel in some incredible fish, head over to  Homer Gudelsky Park  for one of the best places to surf fish in the area, and be sure to bring along your favorite  surf fishing rod  and  go-to saltwater tackle box  so you are prepared to have the best experience possible!

Once you have finished fishing for the day, head to  Fager’s Island  restaurant for terrific ocean views, delicious seafood and American cuisine, and tasty drinks!

If you love the Ocean City area and want to stay for a night or two, consider staying at the  Hilton Suites Ocean City Oceanfront . This beautiful place to stay right by the beach has great amenities!

Sun, Sea, and Sand

A few days at the beach can be a great way to escape everyday life and enjoy some simple pleasures — collecting seashells, watching the sun set, and perhaps surfing or exploring tide pools. But not all beach vacations and beach hotels are created equal. To find budget family beach getaways that still feel like you're away at a resort, we talked with travel industry experts and scoured travel review and booking sites, with summer prices researched in May.

Rock Harbor Beach, Massachusetts

Cape Cod is practically synonymous with "beach vacation," but locals call Rock Harbor Beach in Orleans one of the most enchanting and budget-friendly in the area — not to mention being less than 20 minutes' drive to the Cape Cod National Seashore, a national park also said to be a great family beach. During low tide there’s plenty of room for exploring and running around. Rock Harbor Pier, the home of the lifeboat that inspired the Disney rescue movie "The Finest Hours." Cape Cod is popular come summer, and prices show it, so skip the beach hotel — Vrbo lists options in the area for less than $200 a night. The key is to book well in advance for a best family beach vacation.

Mission Bay, California

The cheapest beach is a free beach. And the sunny, year-round destination of Mission Bay is famous for its 27 miles of free public-access beaches and boardwalks, and water activities of practically every kind, including sailing (rentals start at about $40), kayaking (starting at $23), and paddle boarding ($25). Bordered by quirky, colorful beach communities, this San Diego highlight has countless budget dining choices and nightlife options. Belmont Park, a quintessential boardwalk amusement park with one of the oldest roller coasters in the country, is a short walk away, and entrance is free — though the rides inside are not. Finding budget hotels has become more challenging in this popular beach area and tourist hot spot, making home-sharing platforms a better bet. Vrbo lists some rentals for as little as $200 per night.

Indiana Dunes, Indiana

True, there is no ocean in Indiana, but there is Lake Michigan. Indiana Dunes is home to 15 miles of shoreline and world-class sandy beaches. Beyond the beach, activities include biking, hiking along more than 70 miles of trails, and bird-watching for 350 migratory species. Bailly Homestead and Chellberg Farm, which date back to the 1800s, are also within the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Stays in the area can cost as little as $131 a night even for three-star hotels, a very affordable price for a relaxing beach vacation.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

This family-friendly coastal area is easy to reach by plane or car, and there's lots to do between visits to Myrtle Beach's 60 miles of wide, soft sand. Brookgreen Gardens tickets include a zoo, botanical gardens, history, and sculpture. There's also a weekend flea market  near Myrtle Beach with hundreds of vendors. The three-star Captain’s Quarters Resort — voted most kid- friendly in Myrtle Beach — offered rooms for $144 per night. The resort includes indoor and outdoor pools, lazy rivers, bowling, and an arcade.

Not everyone loves the idea of a summertime break in Myrtle Beach. Some consider it one of Summer Tourist Spots to Avoid .

Chincoteague Island, Virginia

A resort island famous for its oyster beds and clam shoals, Chincoteague is an affordable family beach vacation ideal for beachcombing, surf fishing, hiking, and biking and provides easy access to the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, a 14,000-acre wildlife preserve with stunning wilderness trails. There's also a lighthouse that's free to explore . Lodging on Chincoteague Island is especially cheap at privately owned campgrounds, with sites at Tom’s Cove Park starting at $54 daily without hookups and $67 per day with. The Chincoteague Island KOA offers everything from glamping in a deluxe safari tent to small cabin rentals that can improve on hotel prices during a summer vacation. There’s also a pool, playground, and dog park.

Colonial Beach, Virginia

Less than two hours outside Washington D.C. , this free public beach along the Potomac offers a variety of cheap activities, including free fishing from the town pier, kayaking, bike rentals, and Friday Night Art Walks downtown. Golf carts can be rented and driven around this low-key budget beach town (no golf courses, though; you'll need to cross a river to get to one). For history buffs, the free George Washington Birthplace National Monument is just a short drive away. Accommodations include motels, rental cottages, cabins, and campgrounds. It's not a beach resort, but expanding the search for waterfront lodging to Vrbo can make it as cheap as around $121 a night.

Pere Marquette Beach, Michigan

Michigan may not be the first place that comes to mind when thinking "beach vacation," but Muskegon's Pere Marquette Beach on Lake Michigan is free — and the largest in western Michigan. It includes a playground, volleyball courts, a restaurant and access to lighthouses and the Muskegon Channel. It's also home to the USS Silversides , a World War II submarine and museum ($17.55 for adults, $13 for kids 5 to 17). Downtown Muskegon offers a variety of affordable restaurants, three  breweries , and a regular farmers market. Hotel prices? For this beach trip, you can book hotel rooms for less than $70 a night.

Ventura County, California

Skip Santa Barbara to the north and Malibu to the south and head for the much more affordable beaches of Ventura County. Accommodations are cheaper in the area's less glamorous beach towns, where vacationers enjoy free street parking, daytime lifeguards, piers, volleyball courts, and beaches that rival the beauty of the more upscale spots nearby. Top beach options include Port Hueneme Beach Park (where there’s picnic tables, barbecue pits, volleyball courts, and a 24-hour fishing pier,) as well as Surfer’s Point Beach, Emma Wood State Beach, and Silver Strand Beach, known for its surfing, fishing, and family-friendly atmosphere.

South Padre Island, Texas

A mega-popular spring break destination due to its affordability, this budget beach resort town at the very tip of Texas offers accommodations starting at around $135 a night at 2-star hotels — making for an affordable family beach vacation. South Padre Island also boasts plenty of free and cheap activities, including the 1,500-foot elevated boardwalk of the Laguna Madre Nature Trail, which crosses 4 acres of marshland and provides a great place for spotting coastal and migratory birds. Animal lovers should also head for Sea Turtle Inc ., a rehabilitation facility where admission is $10 for adults and $4 for children. (Kids 4 and under are free.)

Virginia Beach, Virginia

With 3 miles of boardwalk and 14 miles of free beaches and inexpensive restaurants and bars, Virginia Beach is popular and affordable. Just walking around the resort area (maybe chewing one of the 25 flavors from the Forbes salt water taffy shop) is entertaining, with street performers, live music, and festivals, but there are also 4,000 acres of state parks and national wildlife refuge in the area. Hotel rooms near the beach can be $107 a night even during summer months.

Ocean City, Maryland

This classic beach town and its miles of wooden boardwalk are within driving distance of Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Philadelphia and offer free family activities six nights a week during the summer. Options for this relaxing beach vacation in one of the nation's charming small towns include movies on the beach, concerts, dance parties, and fireworks. Sundaes in the Park combine live music, ice cream sundaes, and stunning sunsets. Rooms at budget beachfront motels start at about $200 per night during the summer.

Keansburg Beach, New Jersey

This secluded East Coast vacation spot beach along the Jersey Shore boasts a boardwalk, an amusement park, and a water park. Another kid-friendly destination, the Keansburg Amusement Park offers a combination entrance to a Runaway Rapids water park and amusement park with arcades, go-karts, and rides. The beach is free to enter and features a skyline view of New York City — no beach resort can boast that. There's also a fishing pier and plenty of cheap dining.  Budget motels in the area can be found for under $100 per night, which sounds perfect for a summer road trip.

Cannon Beach, Oregon

A popular weekend getaway outside Portland, Cannon Beach has miles of scenic sandy beach with dramatic rock formations (National Geographic named it one of "The World's Most Beautiful Places" in 2013). Nearby is Ecola State Park, which offers scenic and hiking opportunities as well as tidepooling, surfing, and wildlife observation for a $5 day pass. The town of Cannon Beach is a postcard-worthy Oregon Coast community known for art galleries, specialty shops, public art, and restaurants, and entire Airbnb apartments and cottages can be had starting at $230 per night. That beats hotel prices and makes for an affordable family beach vacation.

Destin Beach, Florida

The "World's Luckiest Fishing Village" lies in a Florida panhandle stretch known as the Emerald Coast, and is often referred to by travel media as one of the best budget beaches in the country. The waters are a brilliant emerald green and the stunning bright white sand, composed entirely of ground Appalachian quartz, resembles sugar. Three regional airports (Destin-Fort Walton Beach, Pensacola, and Panama City Beach) make Destin accessible for cheap beach vacations. Early August summer rates at area hotels start at just under $200 per night for access to these white sand beaches. The local seafood is top-notch — catch your own and cook it to save cash — and inexpensive chain restaurants abound.

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

For anyone seeking an all-inclusive resort vacation, getting outside the United States to  the Dominican Republic, specifically Punta Cana, remains an excellent low-cost option. Dazzling beaches with clear blue waters, coconut palm trees, and pristine white sands face the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. The shallow waters of this area in the Dominican Republic, enclosed by a reef, are well-suited for beginner snorkelers and divers.  All-inclusive accommodation packages that include airfare and sometimes even amenities such as a resort spa can be found for about $1,200 per person for a seven-night vacation.

Aside from the white sand beaches of Punta Cana, the Dominican Republic is also a bucket list destination for people who love food .

Mazatlán, Mexico

Mexican beach getaways attract everyone from raucous college students to newlyweds, retirees, and families with kids — but they often don't run cheap. Still, inexpensive beach vacations are possible south of the border with the United States, and Mazatlán is a good choice. On the central Pacific coast and boasting an international airport, Mazatlán features 50 miles of beaches and plenty of cheap, casual dining. Free things to do in the area for a cheap beach vacation include exploring the Malecón boardwalk, which is one of the longest in the world and runs north from Olas Altas Beach. Additional noteworthy attractions include Old Mazatlán and El Faro Lighthouse, which is one of the highest lighthouses in the world and includes a new glass-bottom lookout. Budget hotels  here abound, with even three-star hotels well under $100 per night.

Miami Beach North, Florida

The glitz and glam associated with Miami don't necessarily bring to mind frugal travel. But shunning South Beach and planning ahead can make possible a trip to Miami that is both affordable and among the best family beach vacations — especially it it's a road trip. North Beach offers the cheapest restaurants and accommodations in the area, as well as art deco architecture that's free for gawking. Cheap fast food dots the area, along with plenty of opportunity for people-watching (locals and tourists). Check out the free and often family-friendly entertainment in the area, as well. Private Vrbos list for well under $150 per night in the area, and the whole trip can be surprisingly affordable.

Clearwater Beach, Florida

Along the central Gulf coast of Florida sits Clearwater, which lives up to its name. This affordable beach destination ranks consistently among Florida's top beaches, and it's easy to see why: well-maintained facilities, lifeguards during the days, excellent weather year-round, powdery sands, and clear, blue waters like a high-end beach resort. There are numerous free and cheap things to do, many of which will please kids and adults alike, from nature walks to musical performances. Beach access is free, but parking is not.  Hotel stays at two-star properties around this vacation spot can be less than $127 per night. Vrbo  also lists apartments, bungalows, and cottages for under $150 per night.

A final benefit for Clearwater: If you're looking for affordable beaches near Orlando and its theme park offerings, that entertainment mecca is a little over two hours' drive away — which might make worth it for a day-trip option.

Business | Fort Monroe’s Paradise Ocean Club reopens after 2-year hiatus

The club had been a staple in the Hampton community for 10 years, often drawing thousands of people on the weekends. However, it also created some controversy in part because of rowdy crowd behavior. Club owner Baxter Simmons was working on renewing his lease in 2022 when the club was forced to shut down after the park service, which owns the property, abruptly ended negotiations.

Park service officials raised concerns about “public disturbances” and safety problems at Fort Monroe’s North Beach area. One person was shot and injured in a parking area adjacent to the beach. Simmons said the park service also complained about crowd behavior and skimpy swimwear.

Eventually, the park service opened bidding to any business that might want to lease the property. Simmons reentered lease negotiations hoping to reopen his club. Although last year’s beach season came and went with no agreement, Simmons finally signed a 10-year lease in March.

He noted that with the new lease, the club has undergone some changes to tone down the crowds and make it more of a place for the whole family.

Some of the more notable changes: The club’s capacity is now limited to 1,000 people and boat access will be discontinued, as the park service doesn’t want anyone entering the venue from the water.

Simmons said the club will also ditch DJs in favor of live music, with numerous performances already booked .

“What we decided was we need to bring the energy back down at the end of the night on Sundays,” Simmons said. “We used to do DJs on Sundays. And that would keep the energy kind of ramped up all the way through the night. And it’s better to have the energy with the band, and then we’ll do acoustical after that, or steel drum after that, to kind of bring the energy back down.”

He also said the club will try to emphasize the pool and beach more than other types of entertainment and ask that people “watch their attire.”

“We’ve got a sign up at the front gate, about no thongs and G-strings,” Simmons said. “And we’re going to do our best to make sure that if people are walking around with clothing or attire that’s very small and not appropriate for kids that they at least cover up.”

Simmons previously said the new lease started March 1 and will continue until Dec. 31, 2033.

Simmons notes that while the past two years have been “very challenging,” he is happy the National Park Service was willing to work with the club. He also said the time off gave him a chance to refresh the venue.

“We can take it in whatever direction we want because we’ve had a little bit of a break,” he said.

The club’s head of security, Dave Taylor, said the shift from a nightclub scene to a more family-friendly environment, as well as the reduction in crowd size, should assuage concerns about safety at the club. He said entering the club is like “walking into paradise.”

“This should be like a retreat area, something like the Bahamas, where you can come, just relax and escape from Hampton,” he said.

Simmons said about 80 restaurant and lifeguard staff and about 30 security positions have been hired for the reopening.

Doors opened at 11 a.m. Wednesday, and visitors steadily trickled in throughout the day. The club offers food, drinks, a beach area with chairs, cabanas, a stage, indoor and outdoor dining areas, a pool and volleyball courts.

Many guests at the club opening day were ecstatic about its return. Married couple C.J. and Mike Kyle said they were daily visitors before the club’s closure and thought the concerns about crowd behavior and safety at the club were blown out of proportion and based on misconceptions.

They said they loved the overall atmosphere of the club and found it to be friendly and safe.

Nicole Ulrich, relaxing on a beach chair in sunny, 80-degree weather, said she and her family had loved the club and were “very upset” when it abruptly closed.

“I actually cried,” she said.

Ulrich said she would take her kids to the club three to four times a week and never noticed any issues. She enjoyed “the vibe,” the staff, the cleanliness, and the fact that the club provided beach chairs and umbrellas.

“I’m really happy it’s reopened, as we’ll be here all summer long,” she said. “This is our plan all summer.”

Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards

Go if you like … Pretending you’re part of the landed gentry. 

The Details

One of the first things you’ll notice about this boutique vineyard found along the Monticello Wine Trail in North Garden, Virginia is the imposing mountains that command your attention. After they’ve been paid their due respect, you’re most likely to notice the abundance of gorgeous flowers, herbs and kitchen-ready fruits and vegetables surrounding the gorgeous house that looks like Martha Stewart’s vision of a farm. If weather permits, ask for a seat on the veranda terrace overlooking the vines and valley, work your way through tastes of the excellent wine and order from the seasonal small plates—which might include fried oysters and a smoked fish board—to pair with those wines. (Just be sure to book a car service if you plan to do anything more than sip.) After enjoying all the food and drink you can handle, take a walk around the grounds to see if you can spot any familiar plantings, appreciate the heirloom apple orchards and check out the chicken coop.

New This Year

For a quick bite on your way out of town, stop in at Modern Nosh, a new Jewish deli that not only makes your tummy feel good with its housemade brisket and corned beef, but also donates all profits to local charities. The four-diamond Boar’s Head Resort also underwent a major refresh in the past year and will reveal its fully renovated Old Mill Room restaurant, bar, main entrance and lobby this spring.

• Before or after your visit to Pippin Hill, plan to spend some quality time at Monticello, which greatly expanded its exhibits on slavery and Sally Hemings last year.
• Exploring the open-air, pedestrian Downtown Mall is another great way to get to know this college town. You’ll find great shopping, galleries, the Virginia Discovery Museum for children ages 1–8, restaurants and live music.
• To get the full Pippin Hill experience, make time for a meal and a cocktail at its sister restaurant, Red Pump Kitchen.

If You Spend the Night

The Clifton might have originally been built in 1799 for Thomas Jefferson’s daughter and her husband, but the delightfully ancient property reopened last summer following a major facelift that modernized the rooms and shared spaces in the most lovely, luxurious way. The restaurant—now dubbed 1799 and helmed by a Michelin-starred chef—also received an overhaul.

Go if you like … A Gilmore Girls level of small-town quirkiness, history, art and shopping.

Frederick, Maryland is really a place that has it all—an adorable historic downtown chock-full of fun shops, corner buskers and museums, all surrounded by picturesque countryside dotted with breweries, distilleries and wineries. Aside from choosing among the oddball things to check out, like the National Museum of Civil War Medicine or the wildlife preserve and zoo, the most difficult task is figuring out where to eat. Try Pistarro’s for family-friendly pizza, Glory Doughnuts for vegan treats, Firestone’s for upscale comfort classics or local celebrity chef Bryan Voltaggio’s Family Meal.

TreeTrekkers aerial challenge park is set to open this spring, as is the farmer-owned fast and casual Hometown Harvest Kitchen.

• Explore the three great shopping areas in town—Carroll Creek Park, a shallow channel lined with shops, water features, bridges, an amphitheater and public art; Everedy Square and Shab Row, an area filled with locally owned shops selling things like handcrafted pottery and folk art; and the stretch of North Market Street that acts as the town’s Main Street, lined with shops like Zoe’s Chocolate Co., Muse, which offers colorful handmade housewares, and Dancing Bear toy store.
• Beer, wine and spirits enthusiasts will want to chart a path around the many breweries, vineyards and distilleries in the area.
• Art buffs will delight in the Downtown Frederick Public Art Trail, a self-guided 2-mile excursion that shows off the town’s diverse outdoor artworks, such as murals, sculptures and an iron bridge.

Book a room at bed and breakfast 10 Clarke Place and walk to dinner at the celebrated Volt or take in a show at the Weinberg Center for the Arts, which might be offering a showing of It’s A Wonderful Life, a silent film accompanied by a live organ, a concert by a Beatles cover band or a talk by a big name like David Sedaris. The newish Inn at Springfield Manor Bed about 15 minutes outside of town also features a winery, brewery, distillery and lavender farm.

Go if you like … Pretending you’ve stepped back in time while shopping at chic, modern boutiques.

There’s a reason Architectural Digest recently named Culpeper as the prettiest town in Virginia, and it becomes obvious as soon as you turn onto the city’s main drag—East Davis Street. The colorful buildings lining this 200-year-old historic shopping district harken back to a time of huge windows, striped awnings and locals chatting at tables set up in front of cafes. The food scene ranges from old-timey diners and snack shops to globally inspired white-tablecloth spots serving seared foie gras. Set in the Piedmont River Valley, the town also offers plenty of opportunities to explore the Civil War battlegrounds to the east and the rolling hills of horse country to the west. Wineries and cycling routes provide further excuses to get in the car and explore the countryside.

B&Bs aren’t for everyone. For those who prefer a brand-new sleep situation, a Hampton Inn  & Suites opened last month.

• We mentioned the shopping, right? Stores along East Davis Street that would pique the interest of even the most discerning of shoppers include Harriet’s General, featuring American-made goods, the eco-friendly and socially responsible Green Roost, plus Homeconomics and Latchkey Mercantile for furniture and home accents.
• Billed as a triple threat, Old House Vineyards can be found roughly five minutes outside of downtown, where the Kearney family turned an 1800s farmhouse with views of Shenandoah National Park into a Shangri-La of wine, craft beer and spirits. Further solidifying the town’s love of all things liquid, 2019 marks the seventh year of the Gnarly Hops & Barley Fest (April 27) featuring more than 50 beer varieties, local food, craft vendors, live music and games.
• And for those sultry Virginia days, seek out Lake Pelham Adventures located in The Ole Country Store & Bakery for canoe, kayak, paddle board and paddle boat rentals starting in April.

On the flip side, getting away from it all in the countryside at Walden Hall might be your cup of tea. Sitting on 10 acres, the B&B offers a farm-to-table breakfast, a retro arcade with 1980s games, a 2-acre fishing pond with complimentary rods and lures, a helipad and high-speed Wi-Fi if you can only unplug and unwind for so long. Thursday through Saturday evenings generally bring free movie nights at the Packard Campus Theater, an AV conservation center with a massive collection of film, television and video items. Showings might include Charlie Chaplin comedy shorts, the more modern Akeelah and the Bee or a 1940s murder mystery starring Claude Rains shown in an art deco-style theater. Saturday mornings bring a popular and well-stocked farmers market from 7:30 a.m.-noon, May through November.

Chesapeake Beach

Go if you like … Low-key family fun for kids who aren’t quite ready for body surfing, fresh seafood or the flash of a slot machine.

This unpretentious Maryland town—so closely tethered to adjacent North Beach that they are often referred to as the Twin Beaches—served as an entertainment playground for Washingtonians in the early 1900s. Back then, a train conveyed city folks looking to exchange downtown heat for bay breezes, a boardwalk, gaming and a ride on the Great Derby Roller Coaster that careened over the bay. The surf here is gentle enough for littles, and all ages will appreciate the abundance of shark-tooth fossils that wash up from the Miocene era, when various shark species swam in the warm, shallow sea that used to flood the area.

Chesapeake Beach Resort & Spa is a hub of the town’s activity, and the hotel plans to roll out new restaurants, a parking garage and commercial areas throughout 2019, with a grand reopening scheduled for 2020. This year also happens to be the town’s 125th anniversary of incorporation, so check the town’s website for special events. In addition, the water park and railway museum are both receiving upgrades this year.

The beach is obviously a huge draw, even when it’s too chilly to appreciate the family-friendly amenities like rentable chairs, umbrellas and inner-tubes. In fact, hitting Bay Front Park (aka Brownie’s Beach) or Breezy Point Beach the morning after a storm is the best time to spot those coveted shark’s teeth. Still, in spring you’ll likely find yourself plotting a time to come back and enjoy the gentle surf during warmer months.  Fishing and crabbing should be next on your list, with plenty of charter boats waiting to help you snag your own catch of the day. Nature nuts will want to plan a stroll along the peaceful, scenic Chesapeake Beach Railway Trail, a boardwalk that meanders over marshland dotted with osprey nests, bald eagles and oyster spats.  If you have time, we’d like to add a quick-yet-quaint visit to the Chesapeake Beach Railway Museum to your itinerary. The former depot is located right in the parking lot of the Chesapeake Beach Resort & Spa, and you can learn about the folks who partied here during the town’s heyday.

Chesapeake Beach Resort & Spa completed a full renovation of its rooms, which now feature chic teal and bold flower accents. This is the best option for accommodations in the area, with the added bonus of putting guests right in the middle of everything fun. If you can work in a Friday-night stay, don’t miss the evening farmers market that winds through several blocks of North Beach and includes a classic car show, local produce, baked goods and brews, along with a few food trucks. (Try the ultra-popular Filipino grill that turns out wonderful lumpia.) Lunch at Abner’s for Maryland crab right on the water is a must.

Go if you like … Cities—but have done DC to death.

The nickname of Charm City is truly more than some slick marketing campaign. Baltimoreans are still liable to call you “hon;” they embrace the magic of eccentricity, as evidenced by the city’s love of local artist and director John Waters; and will put Old Bay on darn near everything (not that there’s anything wrong with that). The food and drinks scene here is as vibrant and exciting as anything you’d find in other cities of its size—perhaps more so thanks to its affordability, which fosters a creative class that definitely inspires what ends up on the plates in Baltimore restaurants. Gastronomes will also appreciate the abundant local seafood, which includes oysters, fish and some of the finest crab in the world, and of course, the popular Little Italy neighborhood, where pasta lovers can also indulge in subs at Isabella’s Pizza and cannoli at Vaccaro’s Italian Pastry Shop. There’s plenty of history, from the Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine to the cobblestone streets of Fell’s Point (learn more about the neighborhood through a fun ghost tour) to the “other” Washington Monument.

Let’s go ahead and assume you’ve been to the National Aquarium. (If you haven’t, go there first!) Aside from the aquarium, the American Visionary Art Museum is a special place that exhibits original works by self-taught artists. Compelling exhibits this year include the well-received Parenting: An Art without a Manual, which closes Sept. 1, as well as a collection of intricate needlework and fabric collages depicting the survival of the artist and her sister during the Nazi invasion of Poland, which will be on view for five years.  After such heavy topics, you might need a pick-me-up. Guinness Open Gate Brewery & Barrel House—one of only two experimental Guinness breweries in the world, and the only purpose-built Guinness brewery in America—recently joined the lineup of craft brewers in the Baltimore area. The Guinness Draught is brewed in Dublin, but here you’ll find original brews like a Black IPA or a Hibiscus Wheat along with live music, bar snacks, brewery tours and a patio. An Uber ride from downtown Baltimore will run you about $20 roundtrip, but it’s worth it.   Lastly, Charm City Helicopters offers the chance to cross “take helicopter ride” off your bucket list for around $150 per person. It’s an awesome way to view the city while upping your annual quota of adrenaline in 20 minutes.

If the Charm City Bluegrass Festival (April 26–27), Flower Mart (May 3–4), Kinetic Sculpture Race (May 4) or Preakness (May 16-18) inspire you to get a room, book at the ultra-cool Sagamore Pendry or Hotel Revival, two new boutique hotels with jaw-dropping design and excellent service.

Rehoboth Beach

Go if you like … A picture-postcard boardwalk scene by day, and a beer-fueled bar crawl by night.

Most people consider Rehoboth a weeklong endeavor, but there’s no need to sign up for the Saturday-to-Saturday schlep along with hordes of other drivers making the trip from the DMV. Since the Delaware beach sits only 2.5 hours away, it’s completely doable as a day trip—just leave the house around 8 a.m., and you could have your toes in the surf well before lunchtime. The rides at Funland, an amusement park on the boardwalk, don’t start to run until 1 p.m., but the games open at 10 a.m. Our usual itinerary is to park the car as close to the boardwalk as possible, buy a tub of Thrasher’s fries, play a few rounds of Whac-a-Mole and Skee-Ball at Funland and hit the beach for a few hours, with one parent eventually making a Grotto Pizza run at lunchtime. After you’re all sunned, sanded and surfed out, shower off and wander along the boardwalk for frozen custard at Kohr Bros. and maybe a round of mini golf at the rooftop course. Then it’s hours of fun on the rides at Funland, dinner at one of the nicer restaurants in town, and then the whole family piles back into the car with pink cheeks, sandy shoes, big smiles and fervent hopes that the children sleep all the way home.

The Pines recently opened its doors, offering a new fine dining experience to Rehoboth travelers. If rosemary-smoked grilled oysters and ginseng honey-brined pork chops sound good to you, this could be your new go-to spot at the beach. Delmarva Discovery Tours has also launched a new option that allows folks to experience life on the farm, including a ride on a combine during harvest season.

Funland, filled with adorably (and Instagrammable) retro rides and games, should be at the top of your list. Well, maybe right under hitting the beach for swimming, skimboarding or chilling in the sand.  Cruising the boardwalk for epic people-watching and getting suckered into buying a hermit crab seems to be the thing for families to do.  Singles and couples without kids might want to check out the vibrant bar scene including Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats or take advantage of Delaware’s tax-free shopping.

There are perfectly fine hotels farther away from the water, but you’re here to be in the action, right? Newish boutique Hotel Rehoboth sits only about four blocks from the beach, other spots close to the water include Boardwalk Plaza, Avenue Inn & Spa and The Bellmoor Inn & Spa. While some include breakfast, those in the know head over to The Royal Treat for no-fuss, yet incredibly satisfying plates of eggs, pancakes and creamed chipped beef.

Luray Caverns

Go if you like … A little bit of kitsch and a lot of nature, served alongside jaw-dropping geological wonders. 

For most Virginians, searching for the fried egg formation and listening to the Stalacpipe Organ in these underground caverns of stalagmites and stalactites are a rite of passage. Designated a U.S. Natural Landmark by the Department of the Interior, it really is a marvelous sight to experience cathedral-sized rooms with ceilings 10 stories high, filled with dripping columns frozen eons ago, reflected in shimmering pools. Located about 10 minutes off Skyline Drive—another must-do for every Virginian—each ticket to the otherworldly caverns includes entrance to the Car & Carriage Caravan Museum, which features transportation exhibits with items dating back to the 1760s, as well as entrance to the Luray Valley Museum documenting local history. Tickets also include a peek at Toy Town Junction, a train collection that began with one boy in 1941. Each of these extras is located on the same property as the caverns.

Luray debuted an arts festival last year, and 2019 will see that festival expand into all of Page County (April 12-15). And for those 100-plus-degree days, Luray recently opened its first escape room, dubbed Escape 211, which features rooms inspired by local attractions (Luray Caverns and Skyline Drive, perhaps?), Luray Caverns also expects to debut a new stair-free entrance by late spring, intended to greatly improve accessibility.

Aside from exploring the caverns and museums, you’ll want to head into the town of Luray for nostalgic charm that could include a peaceful walk along the Hawksbill Greenway Trail, a visit to the Warehouse Art Gallery and a craft brew at Hawksbill Brewing Company.  Proximity to Shenandoah National Park also begs for exploration of the hiking trails, scenic drives and an opportunity to take in the stars from the 4,000-foot elevations of Skyline Drive.  And if the aforementioned kitsch is your thing, pull into Cooter’s Place, an ode to all things Dukes of Hazzard curated by Cooter himself—actor Ben Jones. There’s a museum, a replica of the garage with the General Lee, plenty of merch for fans of the late ’70s/early ’80s TV show and weekly live music performances from Jones.

Located in downtown Luray, The Mimslyn Inn is a member of Historic Hotels of America and embodies the classic charm of its 1931 opening date.

St. Michaels

Go if you like … To look at the water, get out on the water, eat things that come from the water, visit museums about water … 

Often lumped together with Talbot County’s two other beloved towns—Easton and Oxford—St. Michaels nevertheless asserts its own unique personality. Perched on the edge of the Miles River on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, this picturesque town of about 1,000 residents loves its maritime history, and if ever there was a place to embrace your inner sea captain, it would be here. Shops that line Talbot Street keep visitors and locals happily pulling out their credit cards for sea-themed gifts, jewelry and home goods with a hefty coastal accent.

The wildly popular Sea Glass Festival has outgrown its original location and will move to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. Meanwhile, the Inn at Perry Cabin has opened tennis courts and an 18-hole championship golf course.

Visit the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, which pays homage to the area’s history and culture through exhibits, with a climbable historic lighthouse and a working boathouse that offers hands-on restoration opportunities for visitors.  In addition to learning about it, locals firmly believe that a visit to St. Michaels isn’t complete without getting on the water in some sort of vessel, be it a kayak, paddleboard, sailboat or sunset cruise on a yacht. If the maritime museum has floated your boat with its history lesson, you can also book passage on a 1930s steam ferry or a 1950s skipjack.  There are two springtime festivals you should mark on your calendar as well: WineFest at St. Michaels (April 27–28) and the Sea Glass Festival (April 6-7).

The Inn at Perry Cabin is reason enough to plan an overnight in this adorable town, and the luxury property recently refreshed its rooms—some of which offer water views. The idyllic grounds feature Adirondack chairs overlooking the water, gardens and complimentary bikes for riding into town, and the staff can arrange for you to arrive by boat or will cook your catch of the day if you go fishing or crabbing. If you’re not driving home, that gives you the perfect excuse to check out Eastern Shore Brewing Company, St. Michaels Winery and Lyon Distilling Co.

New York City

Go if you like … Frenetic energy and the thrill of having the world at your fingertips.

We don’t really need to introduce you to New York City, do we? Even if you grew up in South Dakota, you’ve seen movies and lived in the world, right? More likely than not, you’ve done NYC with the spouse and then later with kids in tow, so now it’s time for a girls getaway with your closest friends. Even if you haven’t got the partner or the family, it’s still a great time to plan a Broadway day trip. New York is never the same city twice. It’s constantly changing and always luring us back with new reasons to adore the Big Apple.

This season’s Broadway debuts include Ink, which chronicles a “young Rupert Murdoch on the verge of founding the U.K.’s most influential newspaper,” according to Playbill, and Tootsie, a musical based on the classic 1982 movie. This spring, several new restaurants by superstar chefs like Thomas Keller, José Andrés and David Chang are set to open in Hudson Yards, a huge mixed-use development with shops, residences and a handful of eateries.

It’s impossible to distill New York into just a few must-dos, but if we take it from the angle of a girls trip to blow off some steam, a good place to start is scoring tickets to whatever musical you’ve been dying to see—anything from Aladdin to Wicked.  If the weather’s nice, plan a walk along the High Line, an elevated public park built along a historic freight rail line that combines art, design and nature. Reward yourself after the nearly 2-mile trek with caviar and Champagne at Bagatelle New York.  If the weather’s not so great, take a vote on which amazing art museum the group should take in, or duck into Chelsea Market for outstanding nibbles, drinks, gifts and vintage finds.

The Crowne Plaza HY36 is about a 15-minute walk (less than 10 minutes by car) to the Marquis Theater, where Tootsie is playing. It’s also within walking distance of the High Line and adjacent to Hudson Yards.

Kings Dominion

Go if you like … Speed, heights and face-melting roller coaster drops.

This beloved amusement park has been thrilling Virginians since 1975. It now encompasses 400 acres loaded with more than 60 rides, shows and attractions, including a large Peanuts-inspired little-kid zone called Planet Snoopy and a 20-acre water park perfect for counteracting those swampy, humid summer days. For roller coaster enthusiasts, there’s not much that can top the park’s newest ride, a steel-wood hybrid called Twisted Timbers that debuted last season. Other favorites include the foot-dangling, corkscrew-filled Dominator, which tops out at 67 miles per hour, or the impossibly tall Intimidator 305. Guests who aren’t as into the speed thing can have a decidedly different day at Kings Dominion by taking part in the shopping, watching one of the live shows or riding the elevator to the top of the Eiffel Tower, a third the size of the original, but still affording great views.

Kings Dominion wasn’t ready to reveal any details about this year’s new experience or ride by the time we went to print, but fingers crossed for something epic.

Even if there’s a line, you must try the newest roller coaster, Twisted Timbers, if you’re a coaster fan. It’s awesome.   If you’ve been eyeballing that Xtreme Skyflyer contraption but didn’t want to shell out the extra $20 or so to experience it—do it. It’s like skydiving from 17 stories up without having to jump out of a plane.  Park admission includes access to Soak City, a 20-acre water park filled with two wave pools, more than 20 slides and splash pads for little ones. This section of the park opens for the season May 25.

To really get your money’s worth out of the park, stay until closing time and book a cabin at Camp Wilderness, located less than a mile from the park and featuring a shuttle to and from the park—which is great because your feet will ache. Season passes are another great way to get the most bang for your buck, and serve as further incentive to spend the night.

Whether on the sand or walking on the boardwalk, dozens of guests made their way to the oceanfront on Saturday.

Aside from the holiday some of the tourists told us they were there for special events and special occasions.

One guest told News 3 he was in town for a wrestling tournament he was competing in.

Lucinda Wilson says she was celebrating a birthday, but the real milestone for her was experiencing the beach for the first time in her life.

"Seeing a beach a real beach I've never done that I've always put work before anything and I think this is my first birthday in eight years taking off and it's exciting I've never even been to a beach," said Wilson.

Memorial Day 2024 in Arizona: Roadways clear as holiday comes to a close

The Memorial Day weekend was here , with gorgeous weather and heavy traffic on the roads. The weekend was packed with events, from Fan Fusion to Arizona Diamondbacks and Phoenix Mercury games downtown to other events around the Valley.

Memorial Day commemorated those who lost their lives defending the United States in the military, and cities and towns around metro Phoenix held events throughout the weekend to mark the occasion and honor the fallen .

ADOT: Roadways clear as Memorial Day comes to a close

The Arizona Department of Transportation was reporting no major delays on highways at 7 p.m., bringing to a close a major travel day that saw only a handful of crashes leading to slowdowns.

ADOT offers several options for checking whether roads are clear:

• The Arizona Traveler Information site at  az511.gov allows travelers to map routes and see closures affecting travel time.
• The AZ511 app  for Apple and Android mobile devices is a smartphone-friendly version of the Arizona Traveler Information site.
• Within Arizona, dialing 511 calls the Arizona Traveler Information line, which offers traffic reports. Just say the route you're driving and the automated system will respond with traffic delay information. If 511 doesn't work from a cellphone, dial 1-888-411-ROAD (7623). If you're outside the U.S., dial 1-520-200-0105.
• ADOT provides updates on highway conditions via its X feed @ArizonaDOT . 

Rock climber in serious condition after fall in north Scottsdale

A rock climber was in serious condition after a fall near Tom's Thumb in north Scottsdale on Monday morning.

Scottsdale and Phoenix fire rescue crews were dispatched to assist a 34-year-old woman who fell 30 to 40 feet, according to Cpt. Dave Folio of the Scottsdale Fire Department.

A helicopter was sent to retrieve her, he said.

Man's body recovered Monday from Bartlett Lake

A man's body was recovered from Bartlett Lake, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said.

At about 6:30 p.m. Sunday, the MCSO received reports of a man who went underwater but didn't resurface near Bartlett Lake Flats, a popular recreation area in the northern portion of the lake.

On Monday at about 1 a.m., deputies located the man's body.

He has not been publicly identified. An investigation was ongoing, said Sgt. Calbert Gillett, a spokesperson for the MCSO.

ADOT: Slowdowns south of Munds Park, headed into Sedona

As of 1:30 p.m. Monday, the Arizona Department of Transportation was reporting significant slowdowns on southbound Interstate 17 just south of Munds Park and on State Route 179 headed into Sedona. Shortly after 1 p.m., ADOT also reported a crash was blocking all lanes on State Route 89 just south of Yarnell.

ADOT: No delays reported on Arizona highways

As of 7:30 a.m. Monday, the Arizona Department of Transportation was reporting no significant delays on Arizona highways.

Northbound State Route 87 reopens in Fountain Hills

The northbound lanes on State Route 87 reopened Sunday afternoon after a fatal crash shut down traffic near Shea Boulevard in Fountain Hills.

The Arizona Department of Transportation previously warned drivers to expect delays and take alternate routes until the road had cleared.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety said three people were killed in a wrong-way crash early Sunday morning which caused the temporary closure.

Valley to see triple digits on Memorial Day

The Phoenix area is forecasted to see clear skies and reach triple digits on Memorial day with a high of around 103 degrees and a low of 76 degrees with temps staying roughly the same throughout the week according to the National Weather Service.

Those seeking a reprieve from the heat might travel north, with Flagstaff having a high of 77 on Memorial day and a low of 40. The weather service said the Flagstaff area has a chance of being hazy on Monday but should eventually clear up later in the day. The agency noted that the northern Arizona city could also see gusts of up to 21 mph on Monday as well.

Northbound State Route 87 closed in Fountain Hills

Northbound State Route 87 was closed in Fountain Hills early Sunday because of a crash at milepost 187 near Shea Boulevard, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Traffic was being taken off at Gilbert Road. It was unclear when the road would reopen.

ADOT said northbound lanes remained closed as of Sunday morning while noting that southbound lanes remained unaffected.

Brush fire sparks near I-17

A brush fire on Table Mesa Road was burning Saturday evening just west of Interstate 17 in New River, with Daisy Mountain Fire & Medical crews working to put it out.

Firefighters were dispatched at 6:12 p.m.

Several heat relief centers to remain open on Memorial Day

Though Phoenix city facilities are closed on Memorial Day, some things will remain open.

Several valley heat relief centers will remain open for the holiday, according to a post on X , formerly known as Twitter, from the city of Phoenix.

TSA breaks record for most passengers screened in a single day

Millions of Americans traveled for the Memorial Day holiday Thursday. According to a news release from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), officers at Richmond International Airport counted a record number of individuals who were screened at security checkpoints.

They screened 9,85 people which surpassed a record of 9,711 people screened in a single day last year.

Nationwide a near-record number of travelers was also seen. It was reported that 2,897,417 people were screened at airports across the country, which TSA said was the second-highest number of people screened in a single day. They attributed the high number of screenings to Memorial Day Weekend travel.

Phoenix city pools open for Memorial Day weekend

Phoenix Parks and Recreation announced the Saturday opening of city pools with their open swim sessions all Memorial Day weekend.

The open swim sessions are from noon to 6 p.m. at any Phoenix pool location .

Different locations also offer a variety of swim lessons, water exercise classes and kids clubs throughout the summer.

Statewide nature attractions and small-town adventures await Arizonans looking for a quick Memorial Day weekend road trip.

Exploring the state from top to bottom, road trips offer an opportunity for all kinds of interests ― whether it's relaxing at a scenic nature spot like Canyon de Chelly or unwinding in Flagstaff, where eight breweries take part in a unique walk that connects city shops with various bars.

If you're traveling for Memorial Day weekend, watch for these fire restrictions

Fire restrictions have been imposed by officials over large parts of the Tonto National Forest and state trust lands preceding Memorial Day weekend.

Northeast of metro Phoenix, the Tonto National Forest issued Stage 1 fire restrictions across most of its territory on Thursday, excluding areas in and around Globe and Payson.

The restriction prohibits the use of fireworks, target shooting and smoking, except in enclosed spaces or open areas that are bare and free of debris, grass or brush for at least 3 feet. Campfires are restricted to grills provided at campgrounds.

The Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management also announced Stage 1 restrictions on state trust lands in Gila, Maricopa and Pinal counties on Wednesday. These restrictions are similar to the national forest restrictions and also prohibit the use of any tools that have an open flame.

Stay local and enjoy Memorial Day weekend in the Phoenix area with these activities

Arizonans who choose to stay home for the holiday weekend have plenty to keep them busy. Concerts and conventions continue throughout the holiday weekend, and the unusually good weather provides perfect conditions for outdoor activities.

Many of these weekend events, like Phoenix Fan Fusion, a DBacks game and a Maggie Rogers concert, are based in downtown Phoenix, but Valley-wide, there are both parties, and kid-friendly events .

The Arizona Biltmore in Scottsdale will hold a special showing of the patriotic movie "Top Gun" under the stars of Phoenix, while more active residents can hit the Salt River in Mesa for tubing or participate in the 2024 Maricopa Memorial Day 5K in Maricopa.

What to expect for Memorial Day weather in Arizona, Southern California

If you're hoping to enjoy warm and sunny weather this Memorial Day weekend you are in luck. Phoenix was expected to have about average temperatures for this time of year. Other cities were also forecast to have enjoyable weather.

Phoenix should have high temperatures of 90 and 95 on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, with a high of 101 on Memorial Day. Conditions were expected to be sunny and breezy over the weekend with the breeze clearing out by Monday.

Low temperatures will hover in the upper 60s and low 70s over the weekend and Memorial Day.

Not staying in Phoenix for the holiday? Here’s what to know about weather in some nearby cities.

Tucson will follow a similar trend to Phoenix throughout the weekend. The weather service forecasts skies to stay sunny and clear. High temperatures will remain in the 90s, with highs of 91 and 94 on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, and 99 degrees on Memorial Day.

Low temperatures will range from the upper 50s to low 60s.

No snow or rain was expected in Flagstaff this Memorial Day weekend, even as Snow Bowl stays open until June 1 . It's one of only nine ski resorts still open in the U.S., according to the resort. Temperatures down the hill will creep up all weekend long with high temperatures of 67 and 74 in Flagstaff on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, according to the weather service. On Memorial Day, the high was forecast to hit 77 degrees. Skies were expected to be sunny with little cloud coverage.

Low temperatures will range from the upper 30s to low 40s.

For those traveling west to California for the holiday weekend, cooler temperatures and cloudy skies in some areas are expected. The weather service forecasts cloud coverage in San Diego for the week with a possibility of drizzles and fog on Saturday. Highs were expected to be in the mid- to upper 60s with low temperatures in the mid- to upper 50s.

Los Angeles

Traveling to the City of Angels? Temperatures in Los Angeles were forecast by the weather service to warm up as Memorial Day approaches. Highs of 70 and 72 were forecast for Saturday and Sunday, respectively, with a high of 74 degrees on Memorial Day. Low temperatures are expected to stay in the mid-50s.

Skies were expected to have patchy fog in the morning and then be mostly sunny throughout the day during the weekend.

These metro Phoenix, Prescott events will honor fallen soldiers

If you’re looking to honor the fallen this Memorial Day weekend, numerous events are happening throughout the Valley and the state. Here are some of the places where you can pay tribute.

Memorial Day at VA National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona

At 7 a.m. on May 25, community members can place flags at the VA National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona. On May 27 at 8 a.m., the cemetery will hold a Memorial Day program. The cemetery is at 23029 N. Cave Creek Road in Phoenix.

Memorial Day ceremony at Gilbert Historical Museum

A Memorial Day ceremony will happen at Gilbert Civic Center from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on May 27. The museum will be open and free to the public from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The event will include remarks from Mayor Brigette Peterson and include flag and wreath placing. The Gilbert Civic Center is at 50 E. Civic Center Drive.

Arizona war dead: Nearly 3,000 have died in service to their country

Event at Heard Museum

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 27 the Heard Museum in Phoenix is hosting a Memorial Day event. Visitors can see the American Indian Veterans National Memorial and other exhibitions and go to Steele Auditorium for live music, film screenings and veteran artists showcases.

The event costs $22.50 to attend and is $18 for those 65 and older and students with a college ID. Tickets are $9 for those 6-17 years old. The event is free for children under 5, American Indians with tribal ID or CIB. It's also free for veterans and active duty members plus one guest.

The museum is at 2301 N. Central Ave. in Phoenix.

Remembrance Ceremony at Prescott National Cemetery

The Prescott Veterans Administration will host a Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony at Prescott National Ceremony from 11 a.m. to noon on May 27. There is no parking at the cemetery, but free parking is available at Yavapai College with a free shuttle service. Shuttles start at 9 a.m. and the last shuttle will depart at 10:45 a.m.

The ceremony will include guest speakers and a wreath laying. Yavapai College is at 1100 E Sheldon St. in Prescott. The cemetery is at 500 State Route 89 in Prescott.

Avondale Civic Center Memorial Day ceremony

A Memorial Day event that includes exhibits, a musical tribute and flag ceremony will happen at the Civic Center Amphitheater in Avondale on May 27 at 8:30 a.m. The ceremony is free and at 11465 W. Civic Center Drive.

No freeway closures over holiday weekend, ADOT says

Arizona travelers hitting the roads for Memorial Day can expect a weekend free of scheduled road closures on any state highways or Phoenix-area freeways, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

ADOT is encouraging drivers to prepare for unexpected closures as more people hit the roads, and to prepare for hot weather by maintaining vehicles and packing emergency supplies.

ADOT recommends getting plenty of rest before traveling and, if you have to make a sudden stop, to avoid pulling over in an area with grass or brush nearby to limit the risk of starting a wildfire from the heat of your vehicle.

As of Friday morning, no major crashes hindered travel on any Phoenix-area freeways.

The break from roadway closures offers drivers a pause from the increased traffic seen on Arizona freeways during the past two weekends due to construction. Work on Interstate 17 and construction projects like the Broadway Curve Improvement Project have caused frequent delays in metro Phoenix.

Biden says each generation has to ‘earn’ freedom, in solemn Memorial Day remarks

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden marked Memorial Day with a pledge that the country would continue the work of the nation’s fallen toward creating a more perfect union, “for which they lived, and for which they died.”

Delivering remarks at a solemn remembrance ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, Biden said each generation must ensure the sacrifice of the country’s service members is not in vain.

“Freedom has never been guaranteed,” Biden said under gray skies in the memorial amphitheater. “Every generation has to earn it, fight for it, defend it in the battle between autocracy and democracy, between the greed of a few, and the rights of many.”

He added: “On this day, we came together again to reflect, to remember, and above all, to recommit to the future they fought for, a future grounded in freedom, democracy, opportunity and equality. Not just for some, but for all.”

Before the ceremony began, Biden, joined by Vice President Kamala Harris and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, placed a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

In his remarks, Biden invoked the anniversary this week of the death of his son Beau, who served in Iraq and later died from brain cancer that the president attributes to his time stationed near toxic burn pits, to highlight the importance of honoring the service of those who came home with injuries, in addition to the dead.

“Last year, the VA delivered more benefits and processed more claims than ever in our history,” Biden said, crediting the PACT Act which grants automatic coverage for certain health conditions suffered by veterans by presuming they result from their military service. “For too long after fighting for our nation, these veterans had to fight to get the right health care, to get the benefits they had earned, not anymore.”

Biden began the day hosting a breakfast at the White House for administration officials, military leaders, veterans, and Gold Star family members.
