Taylor Swift performs onstage at the Tokyo Dome, in Japan.

The Filipino superfans travelling thousands of miles to see Taylor Swift

Swifties from across the country are spending big so they can travel to see star’s Eras tour in Japan, Singapore and Australia

  • Taylor Swift Melbourne concert live updates: Eras tour hits Australia

F or Allan Villa, seeing Taylor Swift live in concert is an unmissable experience, worthy of the backbreaking travel that will be required to take him there. From Masbate Island, where he lives, Villa will travel four hours by boat to the Luzon mainland and then 12 hours by bus to Manila, where he will take a more than four-hour flight to Singapore.

In the process he will probably spend several months’ worth of salary to attend the concert there on 4 March.

But having loved Swift since he saw the music video of Our Song from her 2006 debut album, Villa says the effort will be worth it.

“I will probably cry the whole night,” he says.

Allan Villa, from Masbate Island, Philippines.

He’s just one of many Filipinos hopping into boats and buses, boarding planes, and spending many months’ worth of salaries to see Swift on her record-breaking Eras tour, amid claims that poor infrastructure was among the reasons why the Philippines was missing from the star’s schedule.

Joyce Blaza from Manila hoped to get tickets to the Singapore show, but after missing out she chose to travel to the only other country in Asia included in the tour: Japan.

“I am so happy. I can say that every peso we paid for the concert was worth it,” she says after watching Swift’s concert at the jam packed Tokyo Dome on 9 February.

Fans watch on as Taylor Swift performs onstage during in Tokyo.

Blaza convinced her husband, Lester, to turn the trip into a postponed honeymoon after they got married in December 2022. She agonised for months over whether or not she could get a visa or if her employer would grant her a long vacation.

To Joyce, Swift was the “best friend” who was there during difficult periods in her life. She sang her heart out to songs from 1989 and Reputation, two albums close to her heart.

She says she loved seeing herself among a sea of Swifties singing and dancing along to their idol.

“It was magical! It’s a different feeling. My husband and I are still feeling high from the entire experience,” she says.

Joyce Blaza with her husband Lester, from Manila, Philippines, who travelled to Japan to see Taylor Swift.

For Naomi Esguerra, a doctor from Manila who is a “Swiftie from the very beginning,” one concert was never going to be enough. She secured tickets to a show in Australia on 25 February and Singapore on 7 March.

It’s the “tour of all tours”, she says, adding that it may not happen again.

“I want to experience being so close to Taylor on stage so I got a ticket in the front row [at one show] … I want to experience the full production and effects of the stage so I took a seat in the lower bowl [at the other],” Esguerra says.

She couldn’t travel for previous concerts because she was finishing med school. “Now that I have the time. I’m making up for it,” she says.

Fans pose for a selfie before Taylor Swift’s concert at the Tokyo Dome.

Don’t ask her for her favourite song though. “That’s the most difficult question you can ask a Swifite.”

“She has this way of telling it in her lyrics. Like she stole my diary and wrote a song about it. It’s exactly how I can describe it,” she says.

She will watch the two concerts with her husband, who has come to accept that Taylor is “the longest relationship in my life”.

For Villa, the relationship is the same; he has a Swift song for all the huge moments in his life.

“What’s amazing with Taylor is you can always find a song in her discography to suit all the events in your life. She’s also talking about a lot of things – insecurities, bullies, your family, and even death,” he says.

Soon You’ll Get Better from the Lover album got him through the death of his grandmother in 2021.

“That’s the magic of Taylor’s music.”

Filipino Taylor Swift Stans Packed a Mall to See an Eras Tour Drag Show

By Tomás Mier

Taylor Swift stans in the Philippines aren’t sure if their favorite singer is going to make the trek to Asia on her Eras Tour — so they threw their own version of the sought-after show.

Over the weekend, Swifties in Quezon City packed Ayala Malls Trinoma to watch Taylor Sheesh , a local drag queen and Swift stan, perform a full set in the style of the singer’s headline-making tour.

“To all my fellow Swifties, thank you so much for your energy last night,” Sheesh — whose username is @heymacyou — captioned a post of her performance.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Mac (Taylor's Version) (@heymacyou)

The lip-synced show involved everything from outfit changes for each album era — a blue bodysuit for Midnights , a flowy gown for Speak Now , and a red two-piece for Red — to backup dancers, confetti cannons, and merchandise.

Attendees could be heard singing the lyrics and dancing along in numerous videos that went viral on TikTok over the weekend. The goal of the performance? Convince Swift to perform in their country as Swifties tagged their videos with #WeWantErasTourPhillipines. (Videos with that hashtag have more than 17 million views.)

The event was thrown by Swifties Philippines, a collective of the singer’s fans in the country, who similarly threw an event like it in Manila at the end of March.

Swift is currently on her Eras trek across the U.S. through August, and she has yet to announce whether she’ll perform in other countries for her tour.

These Filipino Swifties Showed Us How Epic The Eras Tour In The Philippines Would Be

line

Organizing a fan concert to help convince Taylor Swift to have The Eras Tour come to the Philippines? Don’t expect anything less from Filipino Swifties.

Related: Filipino Swifties Went Hard Celebrating Taylor Swift’s ‘Midnights’ Album

Over the past few weeks, you probably have seen at least one post on social media about Taylor Swift’s  The Eras Tour . The superstar’s biggest tour to date has been leaving Swifties reeling with every show and international stans wondering when’s their turn. While Taylor is set to bring the tour outside of the US soon, where exactly she’s going is anyone’s guess. But for dedicated Filipino Swifties, they weren’t going to wait to see if Taylor would bring the tour to the Philippines.

Swifties Philippines, a fan group run by Chelsea Dianne Guieb and Charlene Suizo, decided to take matters into their own hands. So, what did they do? They organized an entire festival called The Eras Festival Manila last March 31 to convince Taylor to have that long-awaited return to the country. Considering how thousands of Filipino Swifties packed what essentially amounted to a fan-run event, their message was loud and clear.

BRING ERAS TO THE PH

On March 31 at the Ayala Malls Manila Bay, thousands of Filo Swifties gathered to celebrate the icon. And even if there were no big stars in attendance, the fans displayed an energy as if Taylor herself was performing for them. “Our team decided to make the concept of The Eras Festival in PH to showcase and let the world know that the Philippines is a Taylor Nation. From Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, there are thousands of Swifties waiting for her to visit for a tour again,” shares Swifties Philippines in an interview with NYLON Manila.

Taylor Swift at The Eras Tour

Filipino fans are known to be some of the best in the world. Combined with the dedication that serves as a hallmark of being a Swiftie, it’s no surprise that Pinoy Swifties would go to great lengths for such an occasion.

Swifties Philippines at The Eras Festival Manila

Planning for the event began as early as December 2022. “We found the right timing and opportunity after the Cebu team hosted an event under Ayala Central Bloc, and we received an invite from Ayala Malls Manila Bay around February to use their venue and receive support from them to turn our vision for this event possible.” Once all the pieces were in place, the event was set. Given how the event announcement post went viral on social media, the enthusiasm for the celebration was real.

A FILIPINO SWIFTIES FESTIVAL

When they called it a festival, they meant it. The space they had was decked out in a Swiftie’s dream. Attendees could check out various booths. They could cop Taylor merch from fan-run shops and SMEs. And they were even treated to a few performances, with one of the standouts being Mac Coronel, also known as drag queen Taylor Sheesh, getting the crowd riled up with her set.

Swifties Philippines at The Eras Festival Manila

The Eras Festival Manila was meant to show that the Philippines is ready for her return. And it did that by having thousands of her eager fans revel in her music and everything she stands for. Some say it’s extra. But that’s the dedication of one of the most hardcore fandoms out there. The palpable excitement of the crowd was so strong, it became a trending topic on Twitter and even caught the attention of international Swifties. It’s a humbling experience for Swifties Philippines.

the way this is just a mall’s activity area. “The fulfillment is overflowing. We are so happy that it went well, all of the hard work has paid off. Even though The Eras Tour PH is still a campaign, we are glad that the Swifties that participated during The Eras Festival in Manila had a great time and were able to create new experiences and memories with the fandom that they will cherish.”

Needless to say, Pinoy Swifties are ready for it as the Manila event was just part one of the group’s mission to get Taylor to the Philippines. A Cebu leg for the Visayas region will be held on April 22 while Davao will host the Mindanao edition on May 5. The group also teases that there may be one more event coming to Metro Manila soon.

ALL FOR THE LOVE(ER)

Above all, getting Taylor Swift’s attention goes beyond just making noise on social media. It’s done through the power of music, specifically Taylor’s music, which has spoken to and connected with millions. “As we aim for that goal, we also aim for the bond and experience as fans,” explains the group. “We voice out how much we want to see her again in the country and at the same time have fun with each other’s company, find new friends, do activities, and make new memories with people that share the same love and appreciation for her music.”

Swifties Philippines at The Eras Festival Manila

Whether or not the group’s effort proves successful, only time will tell. But as early as now, Swifties Philippines and many Swifties around the country are prepared to get their whole life at The Eras Tour . And besides, given how Taylor has made it known that she sees most of what her fans are up to, there might be hope.

Swifties Philippines at The Eras Festival Manila

“Filipino Swifties love you so much, it’s been almost 10 years since you went to see us, we know that The Eras Tour has a big production and our country’s venue availability is a bit of a challenge but we are still hoping for your kind consideration,” shares Swifties Philippine on their message for Taylor Swift. “At this point, you can actually have a show here with just you and your guitar and we will still give you a decade’s worth of energy, and make sure to give you an unforgettable experience.”

And if The Eras Tour does come to the Philippines, the group would love to have  Long Live  and  Only The Young  as the two surprise songs for the acoustic set.

Unless you’re living under a rock, you probably already know that Taylor Swift just released The Eras Tour international dates, finally revealing that she’s headed for Asia in 2024. She’s slated to have four shows in Tokyo Dome, Japan and three in National Stadium, Singapore . But while Asian Swifties initially screamed their heads off in excitement, some can’t help but feel disappointed that Miss Americana herself is only touring in two Asian countries. Taylor Swift isn’t coming to the Philippines and Filo Swifties didn’t shy from voicing their disappointment on social media.

No Philippines?

Hard pill to swallow: Taylor won’t be coming to our shores anytime soon.

We’re all jealous of Singapore and Japan

We know that Taylor Swift will add more shows in Singapore. But what will be the most disappointing part is, Singapore gets the credit for it. Imagine going to the tour & Taylor be like “Thank you for the 6-sold out shows, Singapore”. No maam, ur fans in did it! https://t.co/eXoz2ZMJAi — . (@folkloreswifty) June 20, 2023

We won’t even hear her shout “Good evening, Manila!” or “Mahal kita Philippines!” However, since Taylor knows the demand for her shows, she’s more likely to add more dates. Or at least that’s what we’re hoping for.

For every releases Asian swifties have always been the loudest, Taylor is always the most streamed artist in most of Asia, fan events are packed with people. Honestly this is really disappointing — T.m | Timeless (@TMlovesRED) June 20, 2023

It’s just unfair!

Sobrang unfair. Alam mo bang kami nagbubuhat ng streams mo globally. Kada labas mo ng album laging nagbrebreak ng records dito. Wala kaming pake sa stage. Magdala ka lang ng gitara ayos na. Kami kakanta para sayo. @taylorswift13 WE WANT ERAS TOUR MANILA #nochillphilippines — Anthony (@anthonytrovela) June 20, 2023

Other Filo Swifties find it unfair that Taylor seemingly ignored the Philippines, especially when we have the Philippine Arena that boasts a 55k seating capacity. “Alam mo bang kami nagbubuhat ng streams mo globally,” said one Swiftie on Twitter. “Kada labas mo ng album laging nagbrebreak ng records dito.”

They’re not wrong. In fact, in 2022, Spotify released data that ranked Quezon City as the top city for Taylor Swift streaming. Filo Swifties even held an Eras Tour mall show complete with impersonators and a crowd of thousands!

It’s going to be a bloodbath for tickets

Asia’s population is 4.5B, and there are 3 shows in Singapore (55k capacity each) and 4 shows in Japan (also 55k capacity each) for The Eras Tour. How on earth will Asian swifties get these tickets…. — T.m | Timeless (@TMlovesRED) June 20, 2023

To put things in perspective about why Asian Swifties are disappointed, one Twitter user pointed out staggering statistics. There are more than 4.5 billion Asians about to go to war to secure concerts for seven shows in Singapore and Japan combined. Although it’s not like the entire Asian population are Swifties, it’s safe to assume that a huge percentage is. If the six-day sold-out Coldplay concert in Singapore is anything to go by, we’re pretty sure Taylor tickets will be snagged in the first half hour.

Filo Swifties speculate why there’s no PH stop

Taylor WANTED the PH – word from intel said – we didn’t meet the reqts. of the show. It has bn a gr8 frustration of mine 4 all of us that the PH does not have a PROPER national stadium w/n its urban area. These stadiums meet regular hosting requirements – the PH Arena does not. https://t.co/ZhTsIn4bvS — Martin  (@mart712in) June 21, 2023

One Filo Swifty alleged that the Philippines “did not meet the requirements of the [Eras Tour]” that’s why we don’t get to see Blondie. They alleged that Taylor “wanted” the Philippines but we “do not have a proper national stadium within the urban area.”

Compared to the Singapore National Stadium which is (a) smack dab in the middle of the city so it isn’t a challenge to get to and (b) has the capacity to build a huge stage plus giant LED screens, the Philippines doesn’t stand a chance.

To the Filipino Swifties who are fuming, this is the Singapore National Stadium. It has a sports venue capacity of around 55K people. On a regular concert configuration (ex. Born Pink), it can accommodate 45K to 50K and that is with minimal stage space and screen use. https://t.co/0K6ZfGUewH pic.twitter.com/bwHxyaA1IK — Amber #SOGIEEqualityNow (@geeyanii) June 20, 2023

Another said that even Coldplay had to reduce their stage for their two-day Philippine Arena stop because we don’t have the logistics for the full stage. “Taylor’s stage is bigger and her sets take more time to prepare than a guy running around the stage,” said a Twitter user.

Reminder that Coldplay had to reduce their stage bc Philippines don’t have logistics. Taylor’s stage is bigger and her sets take more time to prepare than a guy running around the stage. Filo swifties deserve a tour, but this isn’t Taylor’s fault https://t.co/pfkzDC6KPT pic.twitter.com/YPtiFlN6ud — s (@messuwanted) June 20, 2023

Another location?

Sinasabi ko sayo @taylorswift13 kayang kaya ka ng UST!!!! Paskuhan (Taylor’s Version)!!! HAHAHAHAHA https://t.co/0ZceOPIy4m pic.twitter.com/gLkZAFY4Jl — K Manuel saw IVE, will see NMIXX! (@theklmanuel) June 21, 2023

Hear them out, the UST open field might be a better option than Philippine Arena. It’s in the middle of an urban area and it can accommodate a huge crowd capacity as proven by previous UST Paskuhans. How about it?

It’s time to accept the fact that we lost

Taylor Swift in Singapore the simplest itinerary, Take morning flight/bus to SG. Then take MRT to Stadium Station or Kallang Station. Go to concert. Take the next morning flight/bus home. You can rest at Changi Airport while waiting or bus pick-up points, Golden Mile Complex, https://t.co/mIpU2dbmqo pic.twitter.com/1SkupPxjgT — Lols (@lalalolss) June 21, 2023

When you finally accept that Taylor won’t be coming to the Philippines, it’s time you focus on the next step: How to secure tickets for Singapore or Japan. Twitter user @lalalolss created a simple itinerary for those interested in attending the Singapore shows. Some have even started posting on social media asking for assistance to buy tickets to Japan.

On a scale from 1 to 10, how badly do you need Taylor Swift to tour the Philippines?
