Already since the 1970’s, Ernst Reijseger has been re-inventing the cello. His unique approach and fabulous musicianship brought him worldwide fame and collaborations with legends as Yo Yo Ma, Trilok Gurtu, Nana Vasconcelos.
In recent years, he composed several film scores for Werner Herzog and scored and performed ‘Shakespeare’s Hamlet’ at The Public Theatre NY with Oscar Isaac and Keegan Michael Key.
A solo performance of Reijseger is seldom seen in his homecountry, don’t miss this opportunity!

Ernst Reijseger, Billy Brooks, Rob Mazurek, Joe Harriott, & More New Releases
by Ludovico Granvassu October 6, 2020
This week we hit the mother lode, with plenty of undiscovered, or re-discovered, jazz ore, in the form of unreleased live recordings of Joe Harriott and the re-release of Windows of the Mind by the skoonum player and Ray Charles alum Billy Brooks, respectively. Among the new gems, projects of the acoustic (Reijseger, Fraanje, Sylla [pictured]; Federica Michisanti; Roots Magic), electro-acoustic (Rob Mazurek with the Exploding Star Orchestra; Dinosaur) and electric (Guillaume Perret; Mach 6) amalgam. And, ...

Elogio Del Violoncello A Napoli
by Francesca Odilia Bellino August 29, 2018

Bray Jazz Festival Various Venues jny:Bray, Ireland May 4-6, 2018 From the hilltop vantage point the Irish Sea lies veiled under a blanket of thick mist. Away to the left, across rocky fields studded with yellow heather, a giant cross marks Bray Heada pilgrimage site for many during ...

Ernst Reijseger, Harmen Fraanje, Mola Sylla: Count Till Zen
by Luca Muchetti March 30, 2015

Georg Graewe, Ernst Reijseger & Gerry Hemingway: Sonic Fiction on Hatology 638
Source: All About Jazz April 10, 2007
Georg Graewe -piano, Ernst Reijseger -cello & Gerry Hemingway -percussion This trio's music is easier characterized than described, since the wealth of colors, moods, textures, and melodies is fluid enough to shift not only from piece to piece, but moment to moment. There is, for me, a European aesthetic at work here, a blend of modern and historic sources with the added bittersweet spice of folk elements from the soil. It's a delicate, demanding juggling act, drawing on past experiences ... read more

ERNST REIJSEGER
Like many of his fellow Dutch jazz players, cellist Ernst Reijseger has a trick bag a mile deep. He can play anything from dolorous bowed lines to jaunty plucked melodies that reflect a long interest in South African kwela music (his recently reissued 1979 debut album, Mistakes, with South African expat reedist Sean Bergin, is full of them). He can lay down a killer walking bass line, strum his cello like an acoustic guitar, and underline the melodies he plays with fluent whistling or a wordless falsetto. His versatility has come in handy in free-jazz juggernauts like the ICP Orchestra and Clusone Trio, where spontaneous chaos collides head-on with mannered standards. But Reijseger doesn’t always drag in the kitchen sink: he’s narrowed his focus from time to time for projects like the open-ended chamber group the Amsterdam String Trio or his long-running improvising trio with pianist Georg Gräwe and drummer Gerry Hemingway, and in the last few years restraint has marked some of his most beautiful and distinctive work. Colla Parte (Winter & Winter, 1997) is an austere, intimate solo recording of some of his succinct compositions, which more or less hew to classical form. Colla Voche (Winter & Winter, 1999), a collaboration with percussionist Alan “Gunga” Purves and the Sardinian multiphonic singing group Tenore e Cuncordu de Orosei, is more striking: thanks to Purves’s grooves, the Italian tune “Nanneddu Meu” sounds resolutely African, making the Sardinians sound like kin to Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Reijseger doesn’t play in Chicago very often and he’s never played here as a leader before; he’ll be joined for the first show by drummer Hamid Drake and at the second by trombonist Jeb Bishop and percussionist Michael Zerang. Saturday, June 9, 9:30 PM, Velvet Lounge, 21281/2 S. Indiana; 312-791-9050. Sunday, June 10, 3 PM, Claudia Cassidy Theater, Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington; 312-744-7094.

Improvisation Workshop
Ernst reijseger.
- 3-7 July 2024
- Application deadline: 15 May
The workshop is open to composers and instrumentalists, singers. Electronics are welcome. Practitioners with interest in improvisation, preferably practically active and equipped with an already developed level of technical-instrumental mastery, regardless of background and discipline. Advised age for participants is over 18 years old.
The course will focus on how to execute and practice improvisation. Solo or in different ensemble settings. Ernst Reijseger’s guidance aims at inspiration and ways to approach the work, whilst enjoying the discipline of it.
The workshop gives the participants a creative opportunity to work on form, co-compose and finding ideas for practice strategies and future composition. The course is generally organised in study days of five/six hours divided between morning and afternoon. In addition to the organised gatherings, there will be enough informal moments in which to talk about desired topics.
Dutch cellist, composer & improvisor Ernst Reijseger is an influential improvising musician who developed a personal vocabulary on his instrument. Ernst Reijseger is a genre bender. His compositions and collaborations transcend musical styles and art forms. He is a creative partner of film and theatre makers, actors, storytellers, poets, dancers, dj’s, painters, sculptors, photographers, glassblowers, inventors and horses.
Since 2004, Reijseger has scored films for Werner Herzog, Alex and Andrew Smith and others. In 2013 Reijseger played in dialogue with paintings by Jerry Zeniuk by making a tour through the gallery whilst playing (album Crystal Palace). Spring and summer 2017 he scored and performed his music to Shakespeare’s Hamlet at The Public Theatre in New York City.
His musical collaborations include many styles: improvised and jazz music – Harmen Fraanje, Han Bennink, Misha Mengelberg, Steve Lacy, Uri Caine, Deborah Brown – classical and baroque music – Yo Yo Ma, Giovanni Sollima, Erik Bosgraaf, Dutch Wind Ensemble,
Forma Antiqua – and traditional music – Trilok Gurtu, Tenore e Concordu de Orosei, Groove Lélé, Nana Vasconcelos, A Filetta, Mola Sylla, Ceylan Ertem. Reijseger’s live performances challenge expectations and provoke communication. Reijseger likes to incorporate the acoustics and reflections of the performance space.
“I’m a non-repertoire cellist, following a non-traditional path. From when I was very young, music from all over the world inspired me. I intuitively played in a way that I later found out is called improvisation. Although I was always interested in the traditional cello technique and aware of the cello repertoire, I became more and more self-taught in playing and composing. My pizzicato techniques are inspired by plucking and fingerpicking of (bass) guitar players. Drummers from all over inspired my rhythmical approach. Pianists, guitarists and saxophonists influenced my phrasing. I’ve always worked with musicians deriving from different traditions.”
Reijseger is regularly invited to teach at music academies Accademia Musicale Chigiana (music&media), Amsterdam Conservatorium (all disciplines), Koninklijk Conservatorium The Hague (thesis supervisor), Prins Claus Conservatorium (European Master of Music NAIP – New Audiences and Innovative Practice), Kronberg Academy Festival.
“Ernst Reijseger has studied the cello rulebook, absorbed it thoroughly, and thrown it out the window. Never restricted by others’ concepts of genre or application, the Dutch master has consistently recast the instrument as his own. Working within virtually any format he fancies, Reijseger has always challenged himself to reach out toward the unanticipated, to move the music around corners in order to reveal unforeseen vistas. His technique is superb, his improvisational skills masterful, and his compositional virtuosity unquestionable, but Reijseger’s music also projects warmth, depth, and splendor—even at its most extreme. Whether pushing the limits of jazz, world music, or modern classical—working solo or with an ensemble— Reijseger never settles for the obvious. With each piece he writes, and in each project he undertakes, Reijseger sets out to explore the myriad tones, colors, and moods available to him, envelops them, then steps around them to investigate possible alternatives. His music is not always easy, but it’s always satisfying. About the only thing one can expect from Ernst Reijseger is the unexpected.”
Jeff Tamarkin, aprile 2010, Carnegie Hall

Ernst Reijseger Cello Harmen Fraanj e Piano Mola Sylla Voice, M’bira, Xalam
The trio makes fierce and beautiful music that is also melancholy and always heavily supported by the excellent voice of their African singer. The exuberant, improvised piano playing of Fraanje and the subtle melodies of Reijseger make for an eclectic, sometimes spiritual whole where nothing is what is seems.”

Moscow metro tour: architectural styles of the subway.
Duration: 2 hours
Categories: Culture & History, Sightseeing
This metro tour of Russia’s capital and most populous city, Moscow, is your chance to get a unique insight into the beautiful and impressive architecture of the city's underground stations. Admire their marble walls and high ceilings representing Stalin's desire for glory after World War 2, and see first-hand how the interiors change with the rise of new political eras. Your guide will lead you through the complex network, which is one of the most heavily used rapid transit systems worldwide, with over two billion travelers in 2011.
Opened in 1935, Moscow’s underground system, now 190 miles (305 km) long with 185 stations, is today one the largest and most heavily used rapid transit systems in the world. On this Moscow metro tour, discover the impressive architecture of Moscow’s underground stations and learn how they reflect the Soviet era.
Getting around by metro, your local guide will take you through parts of Moscow’s infamous history. Stop at stations built during the time of the USSR (Soviet Union) that are praised as one of the most extravagant architectural projects from Stalin’s time. After World War 2, he was keen on establishing Stalinist architecture to represent his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn how when his successor started the de-Stalinization of the former Soviet Union in 1953, the extravagancy of the architecture was toned down.
Discover how the unique character of each station reflected several different eras. While stations like Kievskaya and Slavyansky Bulvar have pompous halls and high stucco ceilings brimming with extravagant decorations, those built later, like Volzhskaya, are lightly adorned with sparse furnishings. Architect Alexey Dushkin and painter Alexander Deyneka were just two of the many artists who made these magnificent landmarks possible.
Revel in Moscow's glory days, as well as the years of scarcity, on this fascinating Moscow metro experience. Conclude your tour at one of the central stations in Moscow. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today.

Culture Shock Rating
We have a wide range of tours designed to give you an insight into the destination you're travelling in and there is something for everybody. The culture shock ratings considers the destination visited, transport used, activities undertaken and that "Wow, I'm really not at home now!" factor. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…
This is the least confronting of our tour range. Transport used on the trip is either private or a very comfortable public option, the activities included are usually iconic sites and locations that are not all too confronting.
The tour can include a mix of private and public transport providing a level of comfort that is slightly below what you would experience at home. Sites visited are usually iconic sites, tours can also include market visits, visits to communities etc that provide the traveller with a fantastic insight into destination.
Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether it's a packed public bus where you are forced to stand, a visit to a local market, a local community, you are sure to have an experience that is very different from what you're used to at home.
The comforts of your home town and the environment you are used to are more of a rarity. Expect some challenging transport options, visits to local sites and areas that don't resemble anything at home.
You're out there in the global community! You are likely to be exposed to the elements, travel in whatever means of transport is available and basically take it as it comes, whatever comes! It can be tough.
Physical Rating
Our physical rating gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the tour. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…
These tours have very limited physical activity. Usually climbing in and out of the transport provided, walking through sites, markets etc included in the itinerary.
These tours have a bit of physical activity but nothing that should challenge you too much. This could be climbing on and off public transport through to a walk through the destination you're travelling in, they can include walking only tours or a combination of walking and transport.
These tours involve a bit of physical activity from walking up and down hills in the destination you're travelling in or the surrounding areas. Climbing on and off local transport or riding a bike up to 30 kms along predominantly flat terrain or jumping in a kayak for a gentle paddle on flat water.
These Tours will provide you with some solid physical activity. Whether its bike riding, walking, trekking, kayaking or riding on public transport you will need to have a good level of fitness to enjoy this tour.
Be prepared for some serious physical activity. These tours are our most challenging and involve some serious walking, hiking or bike riding. Can involve step climbs by foot or pedal and some challenging public transport options in the destination you are travelling.

To help you choose the trip that's right for you, we've broken all of our trips down into four service levels. Measuring the comfort level of the accommodation and transport. The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.
