More than the sum of its pars.

Everybody's Golf: World Tour seems like an anachronism: the cutesy graphics, the tiny list of gameplay modes, the three-tap control scheme, giant "NICE SHOT!" congratulations unfurling at the top of the screen whenever you connect well. It's a far cry from Tiger Woods' world of a billion characters and courses, exploding mini-games and Nike underpants.

The main one-player mode is Challenge, where you unlock new courses (there are six in total), golfers, caddies, balls and outfits as you progress. To begin with, you have just one golfer and one course to play, and it isn't until you've played through eight Challenge levels - some 72 holes, in theory - that you actually unlock another one. Equally noticeable is that the new "Advanced" control system is secretly exactly the same as the old one: you press X to start your swing, press it again when you reach the desired power, then press it one more time as your club-head meets the ball to ensure a solid impact.

The difference is that rather than staring at a power meter (which you can still do if you're a traditionalist), you press X as your golfer reaches the different phases of his or her animation, with little ghostly outlines of the club and a small impact marker to guide you and illustrate good or bad timing. Spin can be added by holding d-pad directions. Putting is a bit different - the usual movement lines wrap to the surface contours and allow you to guestimate turn and pace, but you also get to watch the ghost of a ball surge forward as you bring the putter back to measure distance. As with the Advanced system in general, it's all extremely familiar and intuitive.

But despite being old-fashioned and repetitive, Everybody's Golf quickly wins you over. The new control system is better - watching and matching your golfer's timing is more natural, more rhythmic - and the game itself is stupidly, brilliantly cuddly and charming. The super-deformed characters have big heads with saucer eyes and dance around the tees when they're happy and flap their arms when they mess up. It's never quite wacky and zany, but pitched at a children-being-silly level; the girls pirouette and curtsy elaborately, and the men are oafishly cheesy. Our favourite is the TV weather-guy who answers his mobile phone and flies away on a helicopter.

The courses get their share, too: zebras and giraffes graze the Great Safari course, as your view from the tee is occasionally interrupted by the sight of rally cars skidding through the desert bits around the fairways; while the Euro Classic course's 6th tee faces a statue of a chicken, sheep, dog and ox forming a rural pyramid. Wherever you are, spectators run madly around before you take your shot as though someone's playing a death-or-glory game of musical chairs. You do play the same courses over and over, but there's enough variation in what happens - the wind speed and weather conditions, your own variable skill levels, character selection, club choice, and your own levels of experience - that it remains compelling.

We shouldn't be too surprised, of course, to find that we can stomach performing a sporting activity in the same surroundings more than once - we won't moan that tennis courts are all the same shape, after all - and World Tour's six courses are distinct enough to test the different areas of your game. The Euro Classic's towering conifers, intrusive windmills and Bavarian castle mockups dice your ideal drive trajectories, dominating your risk assessments and threatening to send you out of bounds if you push too hard in pursuit of victory; and Okinawa's stone-walled gardens are only the most vicious borders to the almost right-angled doglegs of which its designers were clearly fond.

So you like golf, but not really interested in the realism found in Tiger Woods? Well, Sony are hoping that Everybody's Golf World Tour on the PS3 will appeal to you. But does it? We hit the imaginary fairway to find out.

Our quick take

If you like golf and are looking to replicate the experience perfectly on the PS3 then Everybody's Gold World Tour won't be for you: this is no Tiger Wood's PGA Tour.

However an easy-to-use interface, simple control mechanism (although strangely there is no way to quit back to the menu in-game) and cute graphics, including the odd elephant that strays onto the course, should bring a smile to your face.

Everybody's Golf World Tour is one for those interested in golf, rather than those needing it to be more vivid than real life on their console.

Everybody's Golf World Tour - PS3 - 3.5 / 5

Broken down into a number of modes the crux of Everybody's Golf is the Challenge mode where you can not only unlock other elements of the game (not until you've played some 72 holes), but also pit yourself against a number of courses to see whether you've got what it takes to win.

There are two ways of controlling your golfer, Traditional and Advanced and while the two sound different in reality it's just the way the hit meter is graphically shown on-screen. On the Traditional option it takes the form of a bar that runs from right to left and back again. The Advanced option on the other hand, is a decreasing circle and you have to hit the "x" key at the right time, or it’s a bum shot.

In practice and we found the Advanced simpler to use. Pressing "x" at the right moment on a decreasing circle seemed easier to do than when it gets to a certain place on a sliding scale. The control system changes slightly for the putting green, but here you get a ghost ball to show you how hard you are about to hit it, along with a grid overlay to show you the slope of the green.

Of course at any time you can change clubs based on the shot you need to play. The game selects for you but will happily show you what's going to happen if you select a different club.

Once you've got the control mechanism in hand, which shouldn't take you long, you can get on with playing the game; the realism of Tiger Woods has been replaced by cute Manga-esque characters that jump for joy on the call of a nice shot and is very endearing.

Graphics are, like the characters, cutesy and there is enough variation in the holes to keep you interested with plenty going on off course with animals and fans getting involved occasionally. Likewise the weather is variable enough to offer a challenge to the same set of holes over and over again.

To back up the Challenge mode there is a training mode as well as a heavy tilt to online play where you can play against other Everybody's Golf fans around the world at the press of a couple of buttons.

I’ve never been interested in the sport known as golf. Sitting there watching a guy get his biggest wood out and then smacking a ball many yards, only then to set off walking towards it, taking his time, then smacking it again, hoping to get it into a hole in the ground. The sport just isn’t appealing enough for me. Golf games on the other hand do hit me with curiosity. They seem to make the sport more attractive than it actually is. There’s plenty of golf games on the market now, from Tiger Woods to Mario Golf, all have something going for them, be it realistic or plain arcade fun.

Clap Hanz has been creating golf games for the Playstation brand since 1997, now the fifth carnation of Everybody’s Golf is here with us (AKA Hot Shots Golf in USA), offering players a great golfing experience on the Playstation 3 that’s full of fun for casual or hardcore golf fans alike.

It should be noted that Everybody’s Golf doesn’t have any sort of career or character driven single player mode. It might sound a little disappointing, but the lack of career doesn’t affect how you look at Everybody’s Golf once you start cracking into it. You’ll forget you even bothered thinking about career. The single player is split into three sections. Challenge mode, which is the main bulk of the single player. Stroke Mode, this is just a single play on any of the courses you’ve unlocked so far. The last is training, which is self explanatory.

Challenge Mode is where you’ll be when you play Everybody’s Golf offline. It’s the place that gives you the chance to open up the unlockables. These range from new clubs, characters, character outfits and balls. There’s a lot of content to unlock and the challenge mode is filled with loads of tournaments to beat. Every time you beat these they will allow you to select a card, which reveals what you’ve acquired. Starting as a novice in the first group, you’ve got to make your way through the tournaments until you have filled up the VS metre, then you can go off and beat the “boss” of that skill level and ascend to the next class level.

Blasting through the ten skill levels will take some time but the game does a great job of slowing taking you through the game. The first skill level is really easy and only takes place on the first course. Working your way through them unlocks other courses that gradually get harder. Clap Hanz has done excellent work with how the game raises the challenging level, you never feel as if it’s suddenly spiked up in difficulty from playing the last tournament when moving on to the next. Special rules make their way into the tournaments to either increase or decrease the challenge. It’s a good inclusion as it spices up the gameplay. Things like Big Cup rule make it a lot easier to get the ball into the hole; it’s a big giant black hole that seems to just love to take balls in. Others are extreme weather problems and point handicaps.

It’s the first time ever that the Everybody’s Golf series has gone online. Clap Hanz has created an exceptionally well thought out online mode. When you first get online you are asked to create an avatar for yourself. These avatars represent you in the lobby rooms that people join when they want to play a game of golf. There’s a varied amount of clothing and appearances you can dress up your avatar with. The game gives you the ability to try obscene things like dressing up your dude in a tuxedo suit with a Friday the 13th Jason Mask. Oh, and he could have a pet chicken if he wanted to. It’s the most whacked out part of the game. You are limited at the start to a certain amount of items, but progressing through challenge mode and playing online unlock plenty of more gear to outfit your avatar, just like if you were playing with a Barbie.

When you’ve had fun playing Barbie, you’ll be able to select a lobby and join the other players. The lobbies come in different types, like jungles, indoor clubs, deserts and saloons, although they don’t really do much apart from the physical look. The avatar can interact with some items, mainly sit on chairs and slide down stairwell balconies. A patch has been released recently where a football has been added to the lobby, so people can kick it around. It’s kind of a pointless update and serves no real purpose other than to annoy people when you boot the ball in their face, guessed I should of shouted “FOUR” before hand to give them a warning, mwaha.

Getting into a round of golf online comes with ease. Tournaments are the main attraction. These happen every 15 minutes, and there are 10 different ones for each of 15 minute slots, giving you plenty of choices. Going online without much gameplay behind you will result in a lot of the tournaments being closed. This is due to you not unlocking a certain character or course yet. It can be annoying when you want to join in a huge session but just don’t have the progression for it yet. The more you play, the more the online really becomes its own, with lots of different types of tournaments to enter. If you just want to have fun then you can set up your own rules and cup and invite some friends to come play with you.

There’s no voice communication, so to get in contact with other players in the lobby you need to type using text, using the inbuilt Playstation 3’s XMB text function. A simple press of the R2 button opens up the menu for you to type words that will appear above your avatar’s head. You can also do this in tournaments after you’ve finished a hole and are brought back to the score sheet. There’s also preset text that you can select with the L2 button, but we all know it’s best to insult someone’s bad playing with your own original abuse. The online experience seemed to work mostly without any problems. There was no lag, mainly because there’s not much data to send between systems. You don’t actually see other players play their round, only their results that appear at the end of the hole.

As you can probably tell, Clap Hanz seemed to put a lot of focus on the online. It’s not the only thing they decided to add though. After having the basic bar shot gameplay format for the past ten years Clap Hanz have decided to feature a new “Advanced Shot” mode. This gets rid of the classic bar and instead shows only your player and his club. Pressing X to shoot will make the player do his swing animation. It will show a ghost image of a club to tell you where 100% is. The club also flashes yellow when it goes past the 50% power mark. Pressing again will select the power, and then for a third time you need to hit it when the club comes down to the ball and is within the hit circle area. If you look deeper into it you’ll see that in fact it’s just the traditional three click basic bar shot but with a new skin. Saying that it’s still the best way to play it because it just feels more natural that watching a bar go across. It makes it harder to judge those shots that aren’t requiring full power and at the same time it feels more like you are playing the game of golf. It makes it more fun in a challenging sort of way. It’s still not as interactive as the Tiger Woods analogue swing format, but it beats the old fashion way that’s for sure.

Everybody’s Golf has plenty of different shots and features the typical shots you’ll probably know of, like backspin, forward spin and slicing it to the left or right. Taking it one step further than that are the special shots. These are unlocked as you keep using the same character, rewarding players who keep playing with their favourite golfers. For instance I decided to go with the cute girlie Jasmine (she’s the front cover lady). It was either her or the cowboy dweeb Nick, so I opted for the cute one, makes logical sense.

Every time I levelled up her Loyalty I gained a new upgrade of some sort. First it started with more Power Shots and then it moved onto things like extra costumes and then the special shots. There’s a few of them and they all have specific reasons for them to come in handy. For example the Super Back Spin AKA the Homing Shot is used for when you are near the pin. If you manage to get a perfect shot and land over the hole, then the ball will burn blue flames and spin backwards towards the pin a couple of yards. Others are the Super Top Spin (AKA Rising Shot) and Super Side Spin (AKA Spiral Shot). If you master these then you’ll be at a better advantage for those harder placed shots.

So right now you are probably wondering if there is actually anything wrong with Everybody’s Golf. If truth be told then gameplay wise there is nothing bad at all. One thing that is disappointing though is that unlike the other games in the series, you can’t actually dress up your character. Reasons given were that the character models were that detailed that opting to just give you a selection of colours was less time consuming. Another thing is that there are only six courses in the game. For a golf game, this is very little compared to some other competing titles on the market. Clap Hanz has assured us that new courses, along with new characters, will become available over the Playstation Network (with one course coming out on 19th June), which is great news, but they will cost money.

Just looking at screens of Everybody’s Golf should give you a big example of how great looking the character models are. They are highly detailed and really stand out with rich colours and great animations, complementing the anime style excellently. The courses don’t shine out as well as the models, due to some evil jaggies popping their heads up, but don’t let it put you off as they do have their moments with some varied designs and lush holes to play on. There’s not really much to speak about the sound effects. There’s lots of effects of balls been hit, and hitting things, so expected plenty of that. The courses have niceties with animals, planes, ocean waves and other things creating atmospheric sounds. The music is listenable and quite relaxing; then again it is golf, no need for heavy guitar and the like, not like anything fast is going to happen.

I really can’t stress enough just how much fun Everybody’s Golf is. From the moment you pick up the controller and start hitting your first ball, you come to understand the charm that the game is filled up with. It’s golf at its purist fun. Simple for new comers, yet at the same time deep enough for the hardcore ball hitter. It is pure arcade at heart. If you have the slightest interest in the sport, or just feel like taking a swing at a golf game and own a Playstation 3, then there really shouldn’t be anything stopping you from getting this game. So get your wood out and smack those balls because this game is a hole in one.

Before Tiger Woods came along, golf was very different, and so were golf games. They didn’t need to have every course on the PGA Tour and all the top names in order to be fun, and Everybody’s Golf: World Tour on the PS3 certainly harks back to the good old days. With some wonderfully characteristic visuals and quirky presentation gamers tired of the serious golf offered by Tiger might find a lot to enjoy.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that Everybody’s Golf is like a round of Crazy Golf. Despite its fun appearance, the basics of the game – both rules and ball physics – still apply. Using a power meter swing mechanic you must accurately hit a ball around 18 holes, attempting to complete the round in as few shots as possible, making adjustments for wind speed and spin applied to the ball. It sounds simple, but it only takes one wayward drive or approach shot to put you deep in trouble. All the cute large-headed characters, fanatical clapping from the crowd and quirky comments won’t ease the pain of landing deep in the rough from your tee-shot on a par 3.

New to the game is an optional advanced swing technique. This isn’t actually as far from the old swing technique as it looks, with the power meter being replaced by timed button presses based on your player’s swing. Little markers are placed in the swing to give you some idea of the strength required, making it a little easier to make the jump from power meter to swing judgement. It certainly feels more natural than looking at a power meter, but it’s not nearly as intuitive as the analogue stick controlled swing action seen in Tiger Woods and other golf games.

Core to the game is the Challenge mode, which sees you playing in events against AI golfers, unlocking new equipment, characters and courses along the way. To begin with only one course is available, with a further five unlocked as you progress. As you work through the Challenge mode you’ll face trickier opponents, tee-off from more distant tee positions and generally have a harder time. The desire to collect everything certainly adds a level of addictiveness that you might not expect, although we’d have liked more of the unlockable outfits to match the crazy characters.

If you grow tired of the Challenge mode you could play against friends. Local play is an option on a single console, but online is where the most fun is to be had. A retro-style overhead RPG lobby system allows you to mingle and arrange rounds for up to eight players. The lobby system is a nice touch, although your communication options are pretty limited. You’ve got a selection of pre-set messages, predictive text input and support for a USB keyboard, but the message box is so small you can rarely get across more than a simple message.

If eight-player matches aren’t to your liking, maybe tournaments for up to 50 players is more enticing, with in-game prizes often on offer for the winner. A unique points system comes into play should you be tied with other players on the same score, so it’s essential to take full care with every shot you play. Hitting a fairway from the tee or landing on the green in the correct number of shots adds points to your total, which could be vital when the scores are tallied in the club house.

For a PlayStation 3 title Everybody’s Golf: World Tour isn’t breathtaking to look at, but it makes up for this with plenty of charm. The courses are entirely fictional and feature the kind of landmarks you’d never see on a PGA Tour course – such as a windmill blocking your ideal path for your drive. The characters are also entirely unique, although they won’t be to everyone’s liking. The cowboy-like guy who insists on doing his best John Wayne impression started to annoy us before we’d completed one round. You won’t find any licensed music from the latest bands here either, but you will be treated to plenty of cheer and encouraging comments from your caddy.

Everybody’s Golf: World Tour is quite clearly a game that’s refused to move with the times, but in this case that’s no bad thing. The core gameplay is solid and the online functionality is excellent, but there is a distinct lack of content compared to other golf games on the market. Six courses might seem like a lot, but you’ll be replaying those holes over and over again throughout the Challenge mode. It’s still highly recommended even if it doesn’t take full advantage of the console.

PS Move coming to Everybody's Golf

Everybody's Golf: World Tour - otherwise known as Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds - is finally bowing to the inevitable and patching in PS Move controls.

Andriasang reports an update adding support for Sony's motion controller will release this northern summer, according to Famitsu.

The update will also add support for stereoscopic 3D.

The absence of both of these things from the game has been taken as evidence of Sony's insanity. Looks like we can call off the men in white coats.

No word yet on whether the update will apply to the European and US versions of the game, or be restricted to Japan.

In-game reset

While playing the game, press L1 + L2 + R1 + R2 + Select + Start to reset the game and take you back to the main menu.

Hints & Secrets

Easy loyalty.

To gain easy loyalty with your characters, simply go to Challenge mode and find a VS match to play. Once you start, hit Start and choose the Give Up option. Do this three times and you will lose the match. There is no downside to this, but your loyalty with that character will go up.

Advanced shot

Instead of using the head of the club to line up your shot, it is much easier to use the shaft. Line up your player's club with the "ghost" club to ensure a more fail-safe shot.

Select Challenge mode, and play a Vs. match. Press Start when the match begins, and select the "Give Up" option. Repeat this three times to intentionally lose the match and increase the loyalty with that character.
