Amazing Motorbike Rental Shop

I've used Flamingo Travel since 2006. Hung runs a great shop. He's personable and always looking to put the rider(s) first. His bikes, by my account, have always been in good repair. There's nothing 'hidden' in the rentals with Hung. My wife and I rode 1,000 miles together, her on her own Minsk. We're back in Hanoi, after seven years, to rent from Flamingo Travel again and get back to the great Vietnam North. In some of my previous rentals with Hung, I required some "roadside" assistance, and Hung was always a phone call away and quickly helped me solve my issue(s). I highly recommend Flamingo Travel.

Renting/buying motorbikes in Vietnam can be a daunting prospect, so going with a good company can save you a lot of hassle and money. We started in Hanoi and had originally planned to buy bikes and then sell them on after we had been to the north and down to Ho Ch Min City. We were recommended Flamingos by Hanoi Backpackers. As soon as we walked in to the Hanoi office we were greeted by Chris (from England) and after an extremely honest and helpful (.....and long!) chat with him going over all the options, we decided to rent two 125cc Hondas @ $13 per day to explore the north (Central & East) for 6 days. The bikes were absolutely fine and we had no problems at all and were very happy with them. You definitely need at least 125cc for the north and some of the roads are tough going. We then also arranged to take up Flamingos' rental deal to go from Hanoi to Ho Chi Min. For $185 per bike you have up to 21 days to do the journey on a 110cc Honda Win (note pretty much all the Honda bikes are Vietnamese copies!), which is extremely good value. The bikes were noticeably not as solid as the bikes we rented for the north, but we soon got used to them. The roads to go south are mostly in very good condition though, so this was not really a problem. My girlfriend had no real problems with her bike the whole trip. I had to have the suspension and clutch disks replaced. The problems were easy to fix though and Flamingos' provide you with a useful selection of spare parts. They also provide a 24hr breakdown phone number, so if you have any problem you can call them and they can speak to the mechanic to establish the problem and importantly a fair price. Overall we were very happy with the service provided. We drove almost 3000km and to only have a few problems is pretty good for this price. Along the way we met many people who had bought their bikes (generally between $200-250) and they were in the mechanics on a daily basis with all sorts of problems. If like us you don't know much about bikes, renting from these guys is a really good option. It is in their interest to keep the bikes in good condition, whereas buying is a bit of a gamble. All the staff, particularly Chris and all the girls in the Hanoi office definitely deserve a mention. They were very helpful arranging to have our bikes put on a train to the north and generally giving helpful, honest advice. Thanks a lot...we had an epic adventure! Nick & Andrea, London

We wanted to do a trip to Mai Chau but didnt want to pay the exorbitant cost to take the tour so we decided to do it on a motorbike and end up at this place. Their service is great and they even help us get to a gas station to fill up the bike. The motorbike was in very good condition and cost us 18 dollars for 1 1/2 days. They provided us with a map, helmets and a rope to tie our backpacks to the bike. They even recommended places to stay which is easy to find when you get there since there are a lot of HomeStays in the area. Good people and good service. Will use them again in the future for sure!

We booked a 2-day guided tour from Hanoi to Mai Chau with Flamingo for 2 persons on one 125 semi automatic bike. We really enjoyed it very much as we discovered a completely different aspect of Vietnam. Our guide, Minh, spoke English very well and was really passionate about making us see a lot of different places and small roads where we did not cross a single tourist. The sites were beautiful, preserved from any discomfort of intense tourist activities. We saw the real way people live in the small village of country side. It was a moving experience indeed. The bikes were in good shape and we ride them with no problem. The homestay in Mai Chau was great and far from the tourist village. Thanks to Minh we had warm exchanges with local people, something that would not have been possible on a self-guided tour. We also had thanks to our guide very interesting information about Vietnam and excellent meals everywhere we went! This was the best 2 days of our 3-week trip in Vietnam.

I did motorbike trip from Saigon (HCMC) to Hanoi in this October (2014). I bought Honda Win with Sufat engine (Vietnamese engine). I paid too much for the motorbike - 450 USD, usually it should by around 200-300 USD (maximum). I didn't want to pay that much, because I know all my Vietnamese friends will laught when I will tell them the price. But I got promise, that in Hanoi I will get 250-300 USD (depend on the condition of a bike when I arrive) back. I tried a few more bikes, but only this one was in my eyes good enought to take all the way. And it was. During the road I had no problem with the bike, except electronic starter (which I managed to repair with a friends help in Hoi An). Finally in Ha Noi, I little bit doubt that I can get full price, even the bike was still in a perfect shape (and I clean, change the oil, fix the chain and check again everything). But at Flamingo Travel, they positively suprised me. At the end we agreed on 280 USD for the bike, so very good deal. Guys at Flamingo are nice, friendly and from my experience trustworthy. I can definitely recommend.

A buddy and I used Flamingo (Hanoi) to rent a pair of 4 stroke Minsk 125's with luggage panniers for a 2 week unescorted tour that ended in Ho Chi Minh City. I was initially very unimpressed by the 2 bikes they brought to the shop for us, as being an amateur bike mechanic myself, I was able to instantly tell that along the line someone without spannering skill had been let loose on these machines, as many of the nuts and bolts were rounded off. A few of the bike's electronics were broken, such as the high beams and front brake light switches, but everything else (except for both speedometers) worked. The bikes themselves were a bit tatty and had obviously had long hard lives, but the engines were sound and ran really well. I am happy to report that cosmetic concerns aside, both bikes covered over 1500 miles under our custodianship, and they both ran on and on without let up no matter what we put them through. Flamingo themselves were faultless. The lady that runs the Hanoi branch was very knowledgeable and drew us up the perfect itinerary, and arranged all our train transfers and bike transport (we took a couple of over night trains with the bikes due to distances involved) which went smoothly, and the agents that she arranged for us in other towns (Lau Cai and Hue) all came though for us without problem. We had to lay out $500 deposit for the bikes, which seemed steep as I wouldn't have paid that to buy one of them, and I was initially worried that the HCM city branch would try and stiff us out of it, but my fears were utterly unfounded. The HCM branch were quite literally stood outside of their shop waiting for our arrival on the day we were due to arrive, and after a cursory look at the bikes, they returned our deposits on the spot. In my travels around Vietnam, I found the people to be good, decent and honest and will go out of their way to help a traveler out. Flamingo travel embody this cultural ethos, and I have no hesitation in recommending them for your motorbike touring needs. Only the less than expected condition of the bikes keeps me from giving them 5 out of 5, and for information, the bike I used was the very same one in their main photo on this page, but it's looking a bit tired since this pic was taken, but it did the job so I can't complain to much.
