Tourism industry to become Ghana’s No.1 GDP contributor by 2024 – Deputy Tourism Minister
The Ghana Tourism Industry is expected to contribute $4 billion to the national economy, ranking it first Gross Domestic Product contributor by 2024.
The Deputy Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mr Mark Okraku Mantey, who disclosed this at the launch of the National Festival of Arts and Culture (NAFAC) in Accra last Tuesday said, the goal of the government is to attract two million tourists to Ghana each year, through the promotion of the country’s vibrant culture.
“President Akufo-Addo wants to make tourism the number one contributor to Ghana’s GDP and make Ghana a hub of tourism in West Africa. He has given us a target of USD 4 billion by the year 2024,” he added.
He noted that Ghana has diverse cultural elements that could attract investors.
He believed that NAFAC’s elevation to international status would lead to a more improved celebration which would help raise revenue for the country.
Mr Mantey stated that this year’s theme, ‘Reviving Patriotism, Peace and Unity through cultural diversity for sustainability development’ was to raise awareness of the moral obligations Ghanaians have to the nation in light of the current global development agenda.
“We celebrate the National Festival of Arts and Culture because it promotes unity, peace and tourism. We cannot attain all that we want from tourism without our culture,” he emphasized.
The Executive Director of the National Commission on Culture, Madam Janet Edna Nyame, expressed gratitude to the initiators of the festival as it has been one of the flagship programmes of the Commission for six decades.
“We are confident that NAFAC over the past years has contributed to artistic development, peaceful coexistence, unity in diversity, creativity and socio-economic development of our country,” she stated.
She appealed to individuals, groups and organisations to support the festival to make it a success as culture has the potential of rekindling patriotism and reinforcing peace and unity towards national development.
The week-long celebration will be held in Cape Coast and will involve activities including choral and indigenous music, a night of highlife, a day for young people, a colloquium, football games and a day to revive our storytelling and traditions.

18 things to know before traveling to Ghana
Mar 7, 2024 • 7 min read
Whether you're a first-time visitor or returning for more, here's what you need to know to prepare for your trip to Ghana © Houssam Ghandour / Getty Images
Travelers have plenty to look forward to on their trip to culturally rich Ghana .
Welcoming Ghana is considered one of the friendliest spots in West Africa, and with its compelling history, vibrant clothing prints and flavorful dishes , tourists keep coming back for more.
Life in Ghana generally moves at a slow, relaxed pace, but it can also be chaotic and fast in different settings. Embrace the cultural differences, mass traffic and intense bargaining, and you may fall in love with the place. Whether you're a first-time visitor or returning once again, here's what you need to know to prepare for your trip to Ghana.
1. Gather the necessary documents for entry
Getting the paperwork together to visit Ghana is a process on its own and can be pricey. All visitors to Ghana must have a valid visa , and they range in cost depending on whether you apply for a single-entry or multiple-entry visa. Your visa for Ghana can take nearly three weeks to arrive unless you shell out extra for an expedited service.
A yellow fever vaccine is also required for entry into Ghana. Check with your local health department or medical clinics to get vaccinated. Malaria pills are also strongly recommended for visitors and can be prescribed by your doctor. If you can't get your hands on them before coming, pharmacies in Ghana have plenty in stock, and they tend to be a lot cheaper.
2. Carry a copy of your passport
If you plan to visit different cities outside of Accra , be sure to print a copy of your passport to keep in your bag as you travel around the country. Police stops are common, and officers are known to ask for passport information.
3. Forget you have a left hand
In Ghana, actions like eating, waving and handing an item to someone are to be done with your right hand only (sorry, left-handers!). From an early age, many Ghanaians are taught that their left hand is to be used for cleaning themselves in the bathroom. Therefore, your left hand is considered filthy and should not be used for eating and other activities. Using your left hand for gestures and main tasks is considered highly disrespectful.
4. Eating with your hands is a cultural practice
Soup-based meals are paired with a starch staple food like fufu or banku and eaten with your hands (remember the right-hand rule!). Be observant of how those around you are eating, embrace the culture and dig in.
5. Keep your thumbs down
While the thumbs-up gesture in many places signifies approval, in Ghana, it shows disrespect.
6. Always greet others
Greetings in Ghana are a big deal, and it’s considered rude to not greet others. When you enter a room, you should say hello, good morning, good afternoon or good evening. When you meet a group of adults and greet them with a handshake, start with the person on the farthest right.
7. Respect your elders
Respect for elders is immense in Ghana. You should not greet elders with a hat on your head. If you are wearing a hat, take it off completely or lift it halfway while extending your greeting. Give up your seat on the bus for those older than you. Crossing your legs and having your hands in your pockets in the presence of elders are gestures that are frowned upon.
8. Be mindful of clothing cultures from city to city
Ghanaian clothing culture tends to lean more towards the conservative side. Accra is more relaxed, and you’re likely to see more shorts and crop tops. However, people elsewhere tend to cover up, so bring clothing that covers your chest and shoulders and reaches or goes past your knees.
9. Learn common phrases in Twi and other languages
Ghana is home to many different languages and ethnic groups. Twi, Ewe, Ga and Krobo are a few of many languages spoken depending on the region. English is widely spoken, but it's important to remember that not everyone speaks it, especially once you are out of Accra and into rural parts of Ghana. Learning a few phrases in the local language is always appreciated and embraced by Ghanaians.
10. Watch your belongings
Pickpocketing and instances of petty theft might be the biggest concern you'll have in Ghana. Pickpocketing can be prevalent in crowded areas like Osu, Madina and Makola Market. Always keep your bag in front of you and away from the roadside to avoid snatching incidents. Don't carry a large amount of cash on you.
Your phone should always be in sight and accounted for. Motorcyclists in Accra are known to snatch phones out of the hands of people as they are passing by both in cars and when walking. It is wise to never stick your phone out of a car window for pictures and videos.
11. Expect the police to stop you
Police stops in Ghana occur frequently, mainly at night but they can happen throughout the day. Your vehicle can be randomly searched by officers, and they may ask for ID and search your bag. These searches usually last for about five minutes, and it is best to comply.
Bribery is common in Ghana, and you may be asked to "dash" officers, which means tip. You can choose to give it or not as it's often only C10 to C20 (US$0.95 to US$1.90), but it may make the difference between a five-minute stop and a 40-minute one.
Police encounters in Ghana are generally nothing to worry about. Officers may have a “tough guy” attitude, but as you talk to them more, the guard comes down and they are usually friendly.
12. Be wary of swift romantic encounters
It’s easy to meet new people in Ghana, and conversations are always flowing. People are open to new connections and tend to get close quickly at times, but be careful of fast-moving romantic approaches and those who immediately ask for favors or money. Scams are common in Ghana and can occur in romantic encounters.
13. Be sure to carry cash
When you’re in Ghana, always have some cash on you, or you may find yourself stuck. Not every establishment accepts card payments, and if they do, the POS systems are often down. ATMs are everywhere in Ghana, so getting cash is easy. You can still bring both credit and debit cards, but be prepared that not everywhere in Ghana will accept them.
Forex Bureau exchange shops will change your cash to Ghanaian cedis. Large denomination bills (100s) will get you a higher exchange rate.
14. Avoid drinking the water
Drinking tap water in Ghana is not a good idea because there’s no guarantee that the water has gone through the proper measures to ensure it is safe. Boil your water or use a water filter before you drink it.
15. Expect weak wi-fi in most areas
Ask your accommodation about wi-fi speeds before your arrival if you plan to use it. Even if internet speeds aren’t the best where you’re staying, you can find reliable spots such as Vida e Caffè and Basecamp Initiative .
16. Use cash for Uber and Bolt
Download Uber and Bolt before you arrive. While paying by card is an option on both apps, don’t plan on using it. Many drivers prefer cash and will cancel your ride if they find out you are paying using your card, or it could be an issue once you arrive at your destination. You can always ask the driver to stop at an ATM before the final drop-off point.
17. Get a local phone number
Ghana is a place where verbal conversations are preferred over texting and online communication. You can get a local SIM card at Vodafone , a phone carrier at A&C Mall in Accra, so that you have a Ghanaian number. Drivers often call their passengers to find out exactly where they are.
18. Never underestimate Accra traffic
Accra traffic is nothing to be played with. You may see an attraction that you want to check out that is only 15 minutes away from your accommodations but it might take an hour and a half simply because of the volume of traffic. It's best not to set reservations for a place if you don't have to. While traffic and delays can be extremely frustrating, you’ll have to learn to go with the flow.

Tourists rate Ghana as expensive - Report

Listen to Article
Nearly 44 percent of both local and international tourists have rated Ghana as an expensive destination, compared to those who claimed it was affordable, according to the 2023 Ghana Tourism report. Out of this group, 7.85 percent of tourists from the US, UK, Nigeria, and domestic sources rated Ghana as a very expensive destination, with an additional 36.13 percent considering it expensive. Fifteen percent indicated that Ghana is less expensive, while 18 percent said it is not expensive. The remainder described the country as normal in terms of purchasing power parity compared to countries in the sub-region. The report's findings reveal that with nearly 20 taxes and levies imposed on patrons in the tourism and hospitality industry, the country has become an expensive tourist destination in the West African sub-region compared to other similar destinations on the continent. Though ranked by Tripadvisor as the most visited country in West Africa, Ghana’s tour packages and hotel rates remain very high compared to others in the region. For instance, a significant portion of tourists' budgets, almost 80 percent, is allocated to accommodation, a sub-sector known for its high costs. According to the 2023 Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) report, accommodation accounted for the highest average spending of tourists, nearly US$500 weekly, especially in non-star rated facilities. The Ghana Hotels Association has repeatedly pointed out that the high cost structure involved in setting hotel rates in the country is a significant challenge. The association is currently grappling with approximately 20 different taxes and levies, which significantly affect pricing in the hospitality industry. Currently, hotels are contending with industry taxes, including NHIL, VAT, GETfund, COVID-19 levy, GTA levy, EPA Levy, FDA levy, MMDAs levy, Fire Service levy, 1 percent tourism levy, SSNIT for staff, data protection levy, BOPs levy, property rates, suitability report levy, GHAMRO levy, among others. These taxes all impact the sector’s pricing mechanisms. Despite the high prices, Ghana aims to increase tourist arrivals to around two million international tourists in 2024, compared to the 1.1 million recorded last year. In 2023, international tourist arrivals reached 1.1 million, a 25 percent increase from the previous year. US nationals constituted the largest group of participants with 39 percent, followed by Ghanaians residing abroad (33 percent), with the UK (16 percent), Nigeria and Germany (6 percent each), and South Africa (4 percent). With more than 37 international airlines operating through Kotoka International Airport and niche tourism potentials such as forts and castles, the GTA holds the view that the country remains an attractive destination. However, tourism sector stakeholders are concerned about the prospects amid the consistent perception of the country as an expensive destination.

Ghana Tourism Authority introduces initiatives to boost domestic tourism
Some of the initiatives were also aimed at encouraging Ghanaians to share their experiences of tourist attractions they visited.
These initiatives were revealed during the 2021 United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) Tourism Day celebration in Wli, themed: “Tourism for inclusive growth.”
Mr Ekow Sampson, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, in-charge of Operations, Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), said the celebration of World Tourism Day heralded the socio-economic, political, and cultural importance of the tourism sector to national and international economies through Gross Domestic Product, growth, jobs, and employment creation.
He said the theme was linked to a government programme of action that sought to create decent employment through inclusive economic growth, skilled and vibrant workforce to support an inclusive growth pathway especially the marginalised communities with tourism resources.
“As part of our collective efforts, the tourism private sector associations such as TOUGHA, TORGAG, CRAG, Ghana Hotels Association, etc. have resolved to provide discounts and rebates to groups and individuals who intend to travel to our attraction sites to encourage them to see the natural beauty of our country.”
Mr Ekow said incentive travels shall be encouraged in the private and public institutions and organisations to also boost domestic tourism.
“The domestic tourism campaign dubbed “See Ghana, Eat Ghana, Wear Ghana and Feel Ghana ” is premised on developing and consuming our local attractions, local cuisine, dance, fashion, and music and showcase Made-in Ghana products both locally and internationally.
He said it would offer the opportunity to develop the local tourism as it would ultimately pull the international communities into the country.
“To whip up the interest of Ghanaians, the GTA launched the Travel, Snap and Win initiative that encouraged Ghanaians to share their experiences of the tourist attractions they visited.”
He said the GTA in recent times had stepped up efforts to draw tourists to attractions at the crucial moment of national life by launching another initiative dubbed, “Let’s Tour Ghana” to promote domestic tourism.
“Other initiatives included the Stay Home Know Ghana, Stay Home Discover Ghana, Ghana Gurus.
“In addition, the National, Single Window Destination project (VISIT GHANA APP) was also launched and implemented to digitise and automate the operations of GTA.
“Streamline the services and operations of the Ghanaian Tourism Industry and ensure service quality across the entire tourism value chain.
“By a click of a button on the App Store or Play Store, you can download the App and be ready to use.”
Mr Ekow said the “Beyond the Return” project under the theme: “A Decade of Renaissance, 2020-2030″ sought to build on the gains made by the successful 2019, Year of Return”.
He said the Ministry unveiled the seven pillars of the “Beyond the Return” project to consolidate the gains of the “Year of Return” and grow tourism in the country.
“lt is also aimed at showcasing Ghana’s investment potentials and solidity in its diaspora engagement programme to promote the African renaissance.
“The pillars include Experience Ghana, Invest in Ghana, Diaspora Pathways to Ghana, Celebrate Ghana, Brand Ghana, Give Back to Ghana as well as Promote Pan African Heritage and Innovation.
He said the passage of the Tourist Sites Regulations, L. I 2393 gave the opportune time for communities with potential tourism attractions to partner with the GTA to develop the attraction sites.
“This offers the GTA, traditional authorities, the communities, districts, and municipalities the opportunity to manage the sites together and ensure sustainable development.
He noted that it will go a long way to help boost domestic tourism initiatives. They upgraded and commissioned tourist sites.
“Volta Region has abundant scenic, mountain, prestige beaches, waterfalls, historical buildings and unique vegetation that remain untapped for tourism development.
“Some of the unique attractions include Wli waterfall, Afadjato mountain, Snake Village, Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary, and Cultural Village.”
He said the GTA had signed an MOU with some communities in the Volta Region to develop and upgrade the tourist sites and was committed to doing that.
“Most of these sites are community-based and therefore linked to the participatory approach and inclusiveness.
Mr Ekow expressed appreciation and commended all the various practitioners in the Tourism, Arts, and Culture sector, who had in the disruptive times of the COVID-19 pandemic worked hard and remained committed to retaining Ghana on the competitive international tourism map as the preferred tourism destination in West Africa.

Music Icon Stevie Wonder Returns to Ghana for his 74th Birthday
A merican singer-songwriter and legendary musician Stevie Wonder has returned to Ghana, a meaningful event given his strong ties to the country as he celebrates his 74th birthday with his family on May 13. Wonder expressed his happiness to be back in a nation he dearly loves. This trip not only marks his homecoming but also coincides with his birthday celebrations.
In a candid interview with Oprah Winfrey, Wonder revealed plans to permanently move to Ghana in late 2020 or early 2021. At 70, the 25-time Grammy winner discussed his desire to shield his descendants from racial injustices in the United States, emphasizing his wish to live in a society where respect and dignity are inherent.
Stevie Wonder’s decision aligns with Ghana’s “Beyond the Return” initiative, a 10-year project aiming to foster an “African Renaissance.” This initiative, following the successful “Year of Return” which commemorated the 400th anniversary of the first enslaved Africans reaching North America, aims to deepen connections between Ghana and the African diaspora. It promotes cultural, economic, and social engagement, encouraging diaspora members to contribute to Africa’s development.

Crossing continents: Five CWRU students share travel tips for their homelands
Students from all around the world choose to study at Case Western Reserve University, making the institution a vibrant hub of cultural exchange and global learning. Whether they’re sharing stories of the captivating rhythms of Ghana, the bustling markets of Nigeria, the artistic heritage of Italy, the modern marvels of Dubai, the ancient civilizations of Iran or some other place, each student offers a unique perspective shaped by their homeland’s history, traditions, and landscapes.
Their stories paint a vivid picture of the world beyond our campus—fostering an environment of mutual understanding and appreciation right here in Cleveland. Today (May 7) is National Tourism Day, which was established in 1983 by President Ronald Reagan to encourage and celebrate the benefits of travel. To mark the occasion, The Daily is putting the spotlight on five undergraduate and graduate students’ homelands from around the globe.
Learn a few tips and tricks the students shared for navigating their home countries , including from Sarah Acquam, MSW student.
Sarah Acquam
Home country: Ghana Master of Social Work student
Q: What’s your favorite part about Ghana?
Acquam: As a proud Ghanaian, there are so many things I love about my home country, but if I had to choose a favorite, it would have to be the incredible food, welcoming community, and hospitable people. The food in Ghana is simply unbeatable, with our famous jollof rice being a must-try dish for any visitor. But beyond the delicious cuisine, it’s the warm and inviting spirit of the Ghanaian people that really makes the country special. Many visitors I know have told me they felt right at home during their time in Ghana, which is why we greet everyone with the word “Akwaaba,” meaning “welcome” in our local language. We take great pride in our heritage and are always eager to share it with visitors.
Q: What is the best piece of advice you have for people who visit?
Acquam: If you really want to experience the true essence of Ghana, I would highly recommend visiting during December. This is when Ghana comes alive with festivities, cultural events, live band music, and a lively atmosphere that truly showcases the heart and soul of our country. You will have the chance to immerse yourself in our rich cultural traditions. Beyond that, my top piece of advice would be to come with an open mind. Don’t get frustrated if things take longer than expected; just go with the rhythm of “Ghanaian Time.” This relaxed mentality is all part of the charm, and you’ll be sure to have an unforgettable experience.
Q: What’s one unique thing visitors should do or see in Ghana?
Acquam: One unique experience I would urge any visitor to Ghana to partake in is exploring our stunning natural landscapes. From the beautiful beaches that line the coast to the lush rainforests and towering waterfalls inland, Ghana is home to some of the most breathtaking scenery in Africa. Be sure to visit iconic sites like the Cape Coast and Elmina Castles, which offer a sobering look into Ghana’s history. And for the adventurous, don’t miss the chance to take a canopy walk through the treetops of Kakum National Park. You should also make time to visit the vibrant cultural art centers, where you can witness traditional craftsmanship and purchase unique souvenirs.
Q: What’s something visitors should avoid when visiting Ghana?
Acquam : While Ghana is an incredibly welcoming and hospitable country, there are a few cultural norms that visitors should be mindful of. You will have to be cautious about how you greet people—never use your left hand, as it is considered disrespectful. And, of course, always be respectful of local customs and traditions to avoid any cultural missteps. Also, avoid packing heavy winter clothing as our climate is generally warm and tropical.
