Details & Itinerary
The Cline Glacier Tour is our most popular tour. Departing from our base you will view Abraham Lake as we start our ascent up the Cline River. The Cline River/Canyon has class 4/5 rapids for
paddlers and challenging ice climbing areas in the winter with extraordinary hiking trails. To the east is Coral Creek with its steep canyons, vistas, and plentiful coral fossils.
Leaving the valley and flying up entry creek you will soar over Cline Pass at 10,000 ft (3048m) to view the expansive panoramic view of the Rocky Mountains. Reducing our altitude we will fly you into the Coup de grace of the tour – The 6 Glaciers.
- Cline Glacier
- White Goat Glacier
- Lion Glacier
- Lioness Glacier
- Resolute Glacier
- Hanging Glacier
From the glaciers, you are off to Michelle Lakes. The Twin lakes is divided by a 50 ft (15m) waterfall which homes the beautiful Golden Trout. Michelle lakes is at an elevation of 7,545 ft (2299m). The lake then leads to a 900 ft (275m) waterfall that plunges into Waterfalls Creek. Following Waterfalls Creek back to the Cline River Valley we will fly by the White Goat Provincial Park. Looking to the east tucked up one of the valleys is a mountain that is an oxidized orange mountain due to the ferric iron content.
Starting our long descent to the heliport you will view the beautiful vista of the glacial blue water of Abraham Lake. This expansive man-made lake is 19.5 miles (32 km) long. It houses Bull trout, Mountain Whitefish, Rainbow trout, Lake trout, and Cutthroat trout.
Flying over a portion of Abraham Lake the pilot reduces his altitude, monitors the winds, and sets his helicopter up for a safe landing back at base.
You have just discovered and learned a little about the Rocky Mountains!

I get motion sickness frequently. Should I take medicine before the flight?
Our flights are very smooth; this is not a theme park ride! So many people who presume they may have an issue feel just fine during the tour. However, if you are prone to motion sickness you might want to take a motion sickness pill just as a precaution. We want you to enjoy your flight!
What time is check-in for my flight?
Check in time for your flight is 30 minutes prior to your scheduled departure. Please understand that your check in time is required to ensure you are prepared for your flight and a safety briefing will be given at that time. What is your cancellation policy?
We require 24 hours’ notice prior to flight time to change or cancel your reservation. Reservations cancelled outside of 24 hours are fully refundable. Tours cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice affect other guests booked and don’t allow enough time to resell the cancelled seats. Reservations, no-shows and cancellations within 24 hours will be assessed a 100% cancellation fee. If you need to change or cancel your reservation, please provide us 24 hours’ notice prior to your tour time and we will be happy to accommodate you.
What is your weather policy?
We ask that you contact the heliport prior to leaving your location to confirm weather. If the trip is cancelled due to weather a full refund is issued.
Are we guaranteed to see all the sights mentioned in your tour descriptions?
We try to fly over every landmark listed on your selected tour. However, flying in a helicopter is not as simple as watching a movie. Occasionally we must contend with poor visibility, strong winds, or other weather that may prevent us from taking our normal route. We will do our best to cover the listed landmarks as well as accommodate any requests that you may have.
Do you recommend taking anti-motion sickness medication?
When is the best time to fly?
As far as the best time of day for a helicopter tour, you should primarily consider your personal schedule, whether it be morning or afternoon, will make no difference. If we happen to have a bad weather pattern the pilot will consult weather reports and other pilots who have been flying to determine if we can operate a good tour. Rockies Heli does not want to take our guests on a flight unless we are reasonably certain we can give you an excellent experience.
How long has Rockies Heli been in business?
Rockies Heli has been in business since 2009.
Will we be the only ones in the helicopter? How is seating arranged?
Seating configuration of the helicopter is 2 front seats, 4 back seats. If you book one of our private tours, then you will be the only one in the helicopters. All other tours guests are combined.

If you are coming from Banff/Lake Louise, when passing by Lake Louise your turnoff is 4kms (5 min) past, if you have driven under an overpass, you are on your way to Golden. Find a safe place to turn around and locate the exit for Highway 93, Icefield Parkway taking the overpass you drove under.
(Please make sure you have the correct directions prior to leaving your location, adding on an additional 2 hours to your driving time is not fun)

Guided alpine hike, how long is the tour, what does the tour include, where is the meeting point, what time should i arrive at the heliplex, what are the hiking options.
There are three main hike options:
Easy: Mt Charles Stewart Ridge to Picnic Site Distance: 2.55 km Loss: 210m Gain: 30m Note: This hike is on gentle meadows with a very minor section of broken rock which is almost flat. If time allows there is the option to hike to the fossil beds from the picnic site, which adds .5km to the distance and 50 meters loss and gain.
Moderate: Wedding Site to Picnic Site Distance: 2.2 km Loss: 267m Gain: 121m Note: The ascent on this hike is on a steep narrow sidehilling trail. If time is short you can go to North Bowl instead, which eliminates 110 meters of uphill and reduces the distance by 1km.
Difficult: Medicine Wheel to North Bowl Distance: 2.15 km Loss: 360m Gain: 50m Note: The descent from Medicine Wheel is over loose large rock and would be rated as easy scrambling. If time allows you can continue to the Picnic Site, which adds 110 meters of uphill and increases the distance by 1km.
What is the group size?
What should i wear/bring, what if the weather is bad and my flight is cancelled, what is the cancellation policy, should i tip my guide.
The trail map shows the three hiking options:

Canmore Helicopter Tour- Sightseeing in Alberta’s Rocky Mountains
Purchases made through links earn us a small commission, at no extra cost to you.
I bow my head down as I walk into a brisk wind, the two strong blades of a helicopter loudly turning above my head.
“I can’t believe this is really happening,” I think as I climb up into the bright-red Bell Long Ranger.
I quickly fasten my seatbelt and then fumble with the headset, big and heavy on my head, as the pilot readies for liftoff.
The door slams shut and I feel a rush of emotions- eagerness, excitement, nervousness, and a pinch of panic.
As I start to feel the effects of adrenaline, the helicopter gently lifts off, hovering above the tarmac. Before I know it, we are picking up speed, sweeping above the town of Canmore and heading towards the mighty Rocky Mountains.
This is it- my first helicopter ride!
Our Canmore Helicopter Tour
I have long wanted to go up in a helicopter, so was elated to have the opportunity to do just that with Alpine Helicopters in Canmore.
I’ve been visiting Alberta’s Rocky Mountains for over 30 years but I’m still filled with wonder each and every time I see them. Although I’m a frequent visitor to Canmore, I have never seen the mountains quite like this before!
Seeing the Rockies from above brings a whole new perspective, and with that, a whole new appreciation.
I’ve always been amazed by mountains, fascinated by how the earth can shift and change so drastically, pushing up enormous slabs of rock to create dramatic landscapes.
Our Canmore helicopter tour allowed me to experience these natural wonders in a new way. I felt like I was seeing the Rocky Mountains for the first time- and it was thrilling!
For 30 minutes we flew past jagged, snow capped peaks, through valleys, over blue lakes, even getting an up close view of Gloria Glacier hanging off Mount Assiniboine.
Our pilot pointed out the sights as we flew past, naming all the mountain ranges, lakes and glaciers.
At times, I couldn’t believe how close we were to the rocks. Having the peak of a mountain at my eye level, then looking down to see how high we were, made me realize just how huge these mountains really are!
I was so in love with the scenery that I wish we could have stayed up there all day. The 30 minutes went by unbelievably fast! As our pilot started heading back to Canmore I felt a twinge of sadness that our helicopter tour was already over.
Feet safely back on the ground, I immediately asked Mike if we could go again! All day long, I kept thinking about the spectacular views from the helicopter. I had a new energy and excitement about the mountains I have visited so often over the years.
Our Canmore helicopter tour reminded me of the importance of seeing a familiar place from a new perspective. It’s very rewarding not only to try something new, but also to discover a different side to a place you thought you knew so well.

Tips for Taking a Helicopter Tour in Canmore
- Our Canmore helicopter tour was with Alpine Helicopters. For my first time in a helicopter, I felt safe knowing that we’d be flying with some of the most experienced pilots in the industry.
- We did the 35 minute Mount Assiniboine & Glaciers Tour. The tour flies you past the Three Sisters Peaks, over the Spray Valley and Spray Lakes to Mount Assiniboine and Gloria Glacier, and along the Goat Range.
- Alpine Helicopters also offer 25, 45 and 55 minute tours. We recommend doing the longest tour your budget allows, considering how fast our 35 minute one went by!
- To help cut window glare when taking photographs, use a circular polarizer on your lens. This really helped eliminate window reflections and haze, increasing contrast in the sky.
