Focus Announce The Hocus Pocus Tour 2023-24
The group has tour dates listed throughout November.
Focus return to the UK, in November 2023, with their THE HOCUS POCUS TOUR 2023-24. Fresh from the studio, where they are recording their eagerly-awaited new album, they will traverse Britain to give their loyal fans what they always want - a good time and timeless music.
Featuring Thijs Van Leer (Keyboards, flute, vocals), Pierre Van Der Linden (drums, percussion), Menno Gootjes (guitar) and Udo Pannekeet (bass), Focus have 14 dates scheduled at some of their favourite venues and a few new ones, too.
Focus have so many highlights from their glorious 50-plus years including: Polydor having to close their record pressing plant to other bands for ten days to meet the demand for Focus records; being a favourite of Bob Harris on The Old Grey Whistle Test and to holding simultaneous top ten positions in the UK in both singles and albums charts.
Through the decades, Focus remained relevant, their music entertaining live audiences, spearheading advertising campaigns [including the Nike South Africa World Cup TV spot] and Hollywood films [including Baby Driver and Troll movie).
A new Focus era arrived, in 2019, bringing with it a rejuvenated passion amongst the band. Focus released Focus 11, their first studio album for 6 years, complete with brand new Roger Dean artwork. The year was then spent touring from South America to Japan - and everywhere in between - in support of the new album.
With the dawn of 2020 came the 50th anniversary of the formation of Focus. Unfortunately, celebrations had to be put on hold due to global events. 2021 marked the 50th anniversary of the album Moving Waves (1971).
The album featured the iconic track Hocus Pocus and following a live performance on The Old Grey Whistle Test in late 1972, a re-recorded Hocus Pocus would reach #20 in the UK singles chart in February 1973, the same week that Sylvia peaked at #4. Moving Waves hit #2 in the UK albums chart in March 1973 as the Focus live tour took the UK by storm. Hocus Pocus reached number 2 in the USA.
2021 saw the release of the deluxe anniversary boxset Focus50 featuring Blu-ray and CD of the Live In Rio concert and a studio re-record of all of the Focus numbers. Focus returned to touring in 2022 and the band were delighted to be performing, once again, their classics such as Hocus Pocus, Sylvia, and House Of The King together with some of the Focus numbers also making an appearance!
Holding a unique place in the hearts of music fans everywhere, Britain also holds a special place in the hearts of Focus, having toured here regularly through their 50-plus years and so the band are looking forward to their visit later in the year.

Good music played well. Enjoyed the evening but maybe more oldies? Age gets to us all but Jan still has most of his vocal range and makes use of it.

On Saturday, 24th November Focus came to the Flowerpot in Derby.
Keyboard player, flautist, vocalist and founder member, Thijs van Leer, looks like the Ancient Mariner these days and drummer, Pierre van der Linden, might have been the only other survivor from that tragic tale. The other two band members are much younger additions: Menno Gootjes on guitar and Udo Pannekeet on bass.
Focus has always been known for its high standard of musicianship and they didn’t disappoint that night. They are unique in that they combine impressive technical ability with strong melodies, intricate rhythms and a subtle sense of the ridiculous that injects a rare element of humour into their work.
They gave us pieces spanning their nearly 50 year history. There are rather more lyrical pieces in their later work but they can still rock the old favourites as if the releases from 45 years ago were recorded yesterday.
A great gig.
Amazing to see this piece of musical history up-close (I travelled from Spain to catch them) despite the downside of the discomfort of being in a stuffy small village hall. For sure a way better venue, better sound, lighting and ventilation, would be a small theatre (any left in the UK?). Audience was 85% ageing males, pint in hand, some nodding to the riffs, but it was a delight to hear that characteristic progrock sound I had enjoyed so much as a young air guitar-playing boy. Hearing Sylvia, House of Kings and Hocus Pocus played live, even if the energy of early 70s Focus is no longer there, made my trip worthwhile.

About The Event
With their unique brand of progressive rock, Focus manifested themselves at the start of the '70s as the most successful and appreciated of all the Dutch pop-rock exports. Fronted by founding member Thijs Van Leer , and best known for their hits “Hocus Pocus”, “House of The King” and “Sylvia”, as well as critically acclaimed albums 'Moving Waves', 'Focus 3' and 'Hamburger Concerto', the iconic Dutch music masters are back with their tenth album, which is guaranteed to please their legions of fans!
After a comeback in the early 2000's, which resulted in the well-received albums 'Focus 8' and 'Focus 9', the band regrouped with a fantastic new line-up. Along with Thijs van Leer on vocals, flute and keyboards, back on the drums is famed Focus drummer Pierre van der Linden , who joined the group on their second album 'Moving Waves' in 1972. Internationally renowned for his rhythmic skills, Pierre remains a defining factor in the Focus sound. Guitarist Menno Gootjes , who participated in Focus at an earlier stage, and acclaimed bass player Udo Pannekee t, complete the band's current line-up. Recently, Focus's biggest hit "Hocus Pocus" was used in a 4-minute Nike commercial before the World Cup broadcast. Focus music can be regularly heard on Top Gear and Saxondale on TV in the UK.
A new Focus era has arrived! There is a rejuvenated passion amongst the band as it enters the studio to record Focus 11 and prepares to go out on the road yet again for its 50th anniversary tour.

The band from the ’60s that just keeps giving.
Featuring Thijs Van Leer , Pierre Van Der Linden , Menno Gootjes and Udo Pannekeet , Focus return to The Met this November.
Fresh from the studio where they are recording their eagerly awaited new album, they will come to Bury to give their loyal fans what they always want – a good time, and timeless music. Each song breathtakingly unique, and each performance different to the one before.
How much longer will Focus tour? We have had fifty years of this amazingly spectacular show, and Focus have achieved so much in this time span. From Polydor’s record plant closing to other bands to press nothing but Focus for ten days to meet demand, to being a favourite of Bob Harris on The Old Grey Whistle Test , and to holding positions in the UK top ten charts in both singles and albums.
And now for the interesting facts of Focus: Focus have featured in the orchestra pit for Victor Spinetti’s musical Hair ; have claimed a knighthood; soundtracked on a 2010 football World Cup commercial featuring Wayne Rooney; and not forgetting that Hocus Pocus was featured in the iconic car chase sequence, after the bank heist in 2017 movie Baby Driver and also featured in the Trolls World Tour movie in 2020.
The men of Focus are looking forward to seeing you all in Bury on their Hocus Pocus Tour .

A new Focus era has arrived! There is a rejuvenated passion amongst the band as they released the first studio album for 6 years, Focus 11, in early 2019. They toured the world in in support of the new album, and are now excited re their 50th Anniversary tour. Unfortunately the world situation had halted the 50th Anniversary celebrations, but Focus now are happy touring the world again.
Eagerly awaited, we are pleased to announce the forthcoming release of FOCUS 12, the brand new studio album from Focus.
For Thijs van Leer (75) and Pierre van der Linden (78), age is nothing more than a number. Both continue to contribute to Focus with a passion. Thijs, who has written the majority of the new album, rises at 4.30 am every day in order to work on his compositions. Whilst the album boasts some of Pierre’s greatest and most energetic drum sequences to date.
Allowing the younger guard to take the audio reins for the first time, Focus 12 is produced by band members Udo Pannekeet and Menno Gootjes, who also contribute two compositions on the album.
Thijs commented “How beautiful life can be when a band plays so easily and so together.”
Focus 12 was recorded at the world-renowned Wisseloord Studios, in the band’s native country, of the Netherlands. A first for Focus, the album features a completely improvised piece which was captured as it spontaneously took place in the studio, during the recording process. Thus proving that more than 50 years on, the band are still excited by undertaking something new and different.
Van Leer continues “Thanks Pierre, Udo and Menno for so much musical passion!”
The band continue their long association with legendary artist Roger Dean whose stunning artwork graces the front cover and packaging. The vinyl version features a stunning gatefold sleeve.
Focus continue to be one of the hardest working rock bands on the planet, regularly touring the globe playing live. This July, they undertake a string of live dates across the USA and Canada, as part of Asia’s Heat Of The Moment Tour.
Thijs van Leer concludes “After all these years, Focus is in the here and now; the triumph of survival!
