Triund Trek

Don't be one among the massive crowds to Triund.

Here is a quieter, short trek near Manali: the Bijli Mahadev Trek. Click here to view the trek.

The Complete Guide to Triund Trek

Triund trek is one of the most popular treks to go over a weekend from Delhi and Chandigarh. It is perhaps the easiest Himalayan trek to do on your own.

With breathtaking views of the Kangra valley and the snow-covered Dhauladhar ranges, it is also very picturesque.

Triund is the ideal destination for those seeking a hassle-free taste of trekking in the Himalayas. The trek can easily be done over a weekend.

The trail to Triund is short but steep. The steep climb is well-compensated by refreshing walks amongst rhododendron and oak trees. There are also various songbirds in the forests along the trail which make it a birdwatcher’s delight.

Considering it's an easy trek and with the effortless accessibility from Dharamshala or McLeod Ganj, there are a large number of trekkers who go this trek, making it difficult to enjoy the serenity of the place and can get crowded on top during the weekends or holiday season. It is better to experience the beauty of this trek during the weekdays.

The town of McLeod Ganj (also known as little Lhasa) also provides for a grand opportunity to experience the vibrant Tibetan culture.

➤ What To Watch Out For

1. the view of the mighty dhauladhar range and other peaks from the trek.

The trek offers some of the best views with the very little climb. You don't have to go deep into a valley like the region of Manali or climb for multiple days to get some amazing views.

You get to see the Moon Peak, Rifle Horn, Arthur's seat, and the mighty Dhauladhar range clearly visible right when you start the trek.

2. Trekking in the beautiful pine forests of Himachal Pradesh

Although trekking through the forest section is small on this trek, it takes you through a lovely forest segment that you will remember the trek for.

The trek takes you through rhododendrons, pine, and coniferous trees. Trekking through the forest and the grand opening of the ridge at the end of the tree line is a sight to experience.

3. The Stunning Sunset from Triund Trek

The sunset is perhaps the main highlight of the Triund trek and what makes all trekkers stay overnight, camp at the ridge. Look behind and you have the sun setting with some golden lights hitting these mountain ranges.

4. Home to more explorations and treks

Triund trek is actually not the last place on the trek, unlike other summit treks. There is much more to offer for trekking enthusiasts. If you want to explore more and have experience of trekking in the Himalayas, then Triund just acts like a gateway to many more adventures.

There are many places to explore like going all the way to the snow line, the Lakha Cave, and for more experienced trekkers over multiple days, going to Indrahar Pass.

➤ Trail Information

Dharamkot is your base to start the trek of Triund. You can also start the trek from McLeodganj itself, or from two other villages close by- Bhagsu and Gallu. The trail from Dharamkot however is arguably the nicer one as it climbs through a thick crown of pine forests.

The trek has been divided into two days in the trek documentation.

Day 1: Dharamkot to Triund

Trek Distance: 5.45 km Trek Duration: 4 hours GPS Coordinates of Dharamkot: 32°14'55.98"N, 76°19'31.55"E GPS Coordinates of Triund Campsite: 32° 15' 42.084''N, 76° 21' 15.732''E

Start the trek as early as possible. The first half of the trek up faces the sun and the sun in the mountains can be very harsh later in the day.

Get to the water tank near the government primary school at Dharamkot. Next to the water tank, there is a trail that climbs up through a forest. Walk up along this trail for about half an hour to get to the Galu temple clearing. There’s a small tea shop here, just below the shrine.

From here, one trail goes south-west into the forest to the village of Naddi. Another forest trail goes north-west to the stream that descends from Laka. The main trail to Triund continues straight past the small shrine.

Tip: There is an option of taking a cab all the way from McLeod Ganj to Gallu Devi temple. For a vehicle, you will be charged for Rs 500 once you reach the Gallu Devi temple, you will see the trekking trail with the forest checkpoint. There are no charges to be paid. However, your id card is important and your details will be logged into a book.

Your backpack will also be checked for the amount of plastic you are carrying and will be checked again while you return back. Ensure you carry them back and trek responsibly.

The trail is a gently rising one, through dense oak forests and traverses the steep side of the Laka ridge. As you move ahead the trail is a deep gully that traverses a steep section and emerges on a rocky spur.

The main Dhauladhar range comes into view here with the pyramidal peak of Mun appearing larger than life. This entire stretch is perfect for birdwatchers, as these forests are home to various kinds of songbirds.

You also have the railings at multiple places on the trek along with a few dhabas/cafés serving tea and packaged food on the trek. There are about 22 bends on the trek or the climb.

At around the halfway point you reach magic view café. From here the trail gets steeper.

The trail continues through a series of switchbacks and climbs to the Triund ridge through dense thickets of rhododendron and oak trees.

The last couple of switchbacks bring you out of the rhododendrons and out onto the Triund ridge. It’s an open grassy ridge that stretches a good kilometer to the south before plunging into the Kangra valley.

There are plenty of places to camp here, you could even get some provisions at the tea shops here.

During winter, watch out when the trail gets covered with snow. Picture by Yashas Garg

Water is scarce and is available close to 1 km before Triund. It is highly advisable to carry your own supply of drinking water up here.

During the trekking season, there are many dhabas at Triund where you can get a cooked meal and refreshments. Instead of buying any packaged food, it is better to pack food from Dharamkot which won't get spoilt. You can stay overnight at the forest rest house at Triund, by doing an advance booking at Dharamshala. The accommodation here is reasonable, costing around Rs 600 to Rs 800 for a room.

You can also rent tents at Triund (around Rs 600 for a two-man tent, with sleeping bags). keep in mind that on busy weekends, such as around public holidays, the tented accommodation at Triund may get booked out.

Day 2: Triund to Dharamkot

  • Trek Distance : 5.45 km
  • Trek Duration : 2-3 hours
  • GPS Coordinates of Triund Campsite: 32° 15' 42.084''N, 76° 21' 15.732''E
  • GPS Coordinates of Dharamkot : 32° 14' 55.176'' N, 76° 19' 31.836'' E

Wake up early to catch the incredible views of the sun rising from behind the peaks to your east. It is a beautiful sight as the sun lights up the Kangra valley.

If you are short on time you can also head back to Dharamkot on Day 1 itself, making the round trip to Triund in a single day. You’ll miss out on the lovely views of the evening and morning sky from Triund, but it is possible to return before it gets dark provided you start early.

Descend by retracing your steps along the path you came up with. Coming down should take a lot less time than it took to climb up. It’s a short day so enjoy the walk and stop by at the cafes enroute.

Conversely, if you have the time you can ascend further from Triund to Lahesh cave via Laka. Lahesh cave serves as the base camp for the climb to Indrahar pass (14,250 ft).

There is a tea house at Laka, but you will have to carry your own supplies if venturing further. It is possible to go up to Lahesh cave and descend back to Dharamkot the same day.

Strength training is equally important to trek comfortably. Work on your glutes, calves, and knees. Additionally, work on strengthening your core.

You must strengthen your core muscles. for strengthening your core muscles, holding a plank and it’s variations (elbow, side planks) are the best exercises to go about doing it.

Triund Trek: The Only Guide You’ll Ever Need For Triund

Table of contents.

Triund Trek- the most sought-after trek in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, India.

Three reasons-

  • It’s an easy and short trek. It can be easily done over a weekend.
  • Accessibility of the trek. Triund is in Dharamshala; Dharamshala is very well connected by road and air, and the starting point of the trek (Gallu Devi) is also easily accessible by road.
  • This👇

Triund Trek

The above three reasons all together make it a perfect weekend getaway destination, especially for North India.

Triund Trek

Triund trek is one of the easiest and DIY Himalayan trek. It’s in Dharamshala, near Mcleodganj, Himachal Pradesh, India.

It’s easy because there’s a well-defined route to reach the Triund top. The trail goes through the woods of Oak trees, Pine, Deodar, and Rhododendron. The trail offers you a picturesque view of the spectacular Kangra valley on the one side and the mighty snow-covered Dhauladhar range on the other side.

You also get to see the birds’ eye view of the whole Kangra district and HPCA cricket stadium (the most beautiful cricket stadium of India). The trail offers absolutely stunning views.

View of Indrahar pass

However, the trail is always crammed with people. As I have told you, it’s the most sought after trek in North India and makes an ideal weekend getaway destination.

Now, let’s talk about Triund trek in detail.

Note : At the time of writing this, I am living in Bhagsunag village (one of the nearby villages to Triund) for the last six months, and in this much time, I’ve been to Triund 4-5 times. That means I know about Triund very well and writing this complete guide from a locals point of the eye.

For any sort of help regarding Triund trek, feel free to comment, email, or you can also WhatsApp me. You’ll find the whatsApp number in the last of the post.

Triund Trek Height

  • The height of the triund trek is 2850m; 9000 ft.
  • The height of the snowline (4 km ahead from Triund) is 3350m; 10000ft.

Triund Trek Difficulty Level

It’s a one size fits all type of trek. The Triund trek has got something for everybody; a first-timer, a beginner, and a veteran.

You may find the last stretch of the trail a bit challenging. It’s also famously known as ’22 curves’ as it has 22 tiring curves that you’ve to cross before you reach the Triund top.

Honestly, I never felt it challenging. Maybe because of my fitness; I run daily. But some people do find it difficult.

Triund Trek Distance

  • Gallu Devi (the starting point of the trek) to Triund distance: 7 Km
  • Mcleodganj to Triund distance: 9 km
  • Dharamshala to Triund distance: 18-20 km

Triund Trek Length

It depends on, where do you start the trek.

  • Gallu Devi – 7km (the usual and the official route)
  • Bhagsunag via Henni village – 7 km
  • Bhagsunag waterfall via Karthani – 6 km

Best Time For Triund Trek

  • The best time for Triund is from April to June , and October to December .

Note : Don’t do the Triund trek in the rainy season. It rains heavily here in Dharamshala. In winter, the route gets closed because Triund receives heavy snowfall.

Triund Trek Route

There are three routes to go to Triund:

  •   Gallu Devi – It’s the official one. All the tourists take this route only. You’ll also find the tour guide here only.
  • Bhagsunag Village – Locals and nearby villagers, take this route and also some tourists those who are aware of this route. This route goes through the Heini village of upper Bhagsu, and after some distance, it gets adjoined to the usual Gallu Devi route. The trail is not well defined, so the chances are you may get lost.
  • Bhagsunag waterfall – This trail is very steep and goes through dense forests. It’s advisable not to trek through this route without any local guide.

Triund Trek Package

I have to be honest here.

I genuinely don’t want you to opt for any packages provided by these irresponsible travel companies. By choosing these travel companies, you’re indirectly harming the ecosystem, and anyway, they charge you a lot more than the reasonable rate.

Before you decide to go with any of the travel company, ask them about their company’s environmental and responsible tourism policies. Choose only those who support responsible tourism.

FYI : The ban on overnight camping at Triund top got imposed last year only. The travel companies and we are equally responsible for this. It’s good that its banned now.

Last year on New Year’s Eve, there were more than 2000 people at Triund. Can you imagine the negative impacts of this? At such a height, where would all waste go?

Locals tell that there was nothing but tissues, bottles, sanitary pads, and plastic bottles.

Please be a responsible traveler.

Take all your trash back to the city where it can be appropriately decomposed and also don’t bring any speaker. I don’t understand what’s need to come in nature to listen to songs, you can do that in your room.

Locals also tell that earlier, there used to be a lot of songbirds. Now it’s just water bottles and Lays packets.

PedalThrottle recommendation: Hire any local tour guide from the nearby village. I’ll help you with that.

Why should you go with a local tour guide instead of a company?

  • Locals care about their place, the environment more than the tourists, and any other travel company. Their intention is never just to make money.
  • They’ll tell you lovely stories about the place as it’s their native place. Who can be a better person than locals to talk about their place?
  • They’re always willing to go the extra mile for you to make your experience memorable.  Like a travel company, they never want to just get rich off of you.
  • By choosing them, you support their livelihood.

Triund Trek: All You Need to Know

Trekking has always been one of those activities that my non-pathetic alter ego has yearned for. But rarely does it get an opportunity to indulge in the same. The regular readers will be aware of the first-ever trek of any value or consequence done for this blog, the Valley of Flowers .

After more than two years, I was again back in the Himalayas and as I’d mentioned in the previous post, McLeod Ganj spoiled us with food . So, to overcome the socialist guilt of excessive consumption, I decided to undertake the Triund Trek the next day along with Su Ko who has always been a bigger sinner of gluttony.

We did have a bigger than usual breakfast at the hotel in McLeod Ganj but I think it was fair because we were going to have a tough time. We first moved from McLeod Ganj to Dharamkot by hiring an auto rickshaw. It is a smaller settlement barely a couple of KMs away and it is better to take some vehicle to this point to save time. At this point, the real trek starts and it is 7KMs from here to the peak of Triund, a distance I rarely walk at one go even on the plains.

The first few yards of the trek are not that difficult. The ambiance was not lush green like the monsoons but had a more demure green look with occasional reddish hues of the autumn. The moon was visible even in the broad daylight due to the clear and unpolluted sky. We occasionally came across other trekkers, small settlements and mini caravans of the locals with solitary donkeys.

One particular view was especially attracted my attention. It was a small plot of terrace cultivation that could be seen from a distance. There was also a steep trail leading towards it and there was also a small hut and I wondered how great it would be to live such a secluded existence. As we moved on, that particular plot kept becoming clearer and after a couple of tiring hours, I suddenly noticed that we’ve reached a higher spot than the plot in question.

8534179558 dacd12ef56 o

The progress was slow and tedious. Years of lethargic urban lifestyle was showing its colours. The sun was warm but the shades were chilly and the lone water bottle was quickly getting empty. But with every turn the Dhauladhars became clearer with vibrant fall colours.

8534179892 7a8ea56f4d o

From Triund it is possible to move higher up to certain other locations and in fact it is one of the ancient routes connecting Kangra with Chamba. But the popular day trek for dummies is supposed to end here itself. We were tired, famished and sleepy. We asked one of the shopkeepers if we can get anything to eat, he offered us Maggi and Gatorade and we eagerly lapped up this triumph of globalization. We waited for an hour but the fog refused to go away and so the pseudo aerial shots that I fantasized about were never possible.

8534179274 977e89a0e8 o

While coming down I suddenly saw a goat. After a few steps, I saw a couple more and finally I noticed an entire herd of mountain goats. I always knew that the goats are capable of good balancing acts. The first-ever circus I ever visited during my childhood had a goat walking on wire. But it was impressive seeing so many of them swarming the steep mountain and soon I realized that they were not alone. There was a shepherd guiding them but we only heard his voice. But we did see a shepherd dog keeping a close eye on them. I must confess that this was the most stately dog I have even seen in my life.

8533069733 c0e354a9d3 o

While coming back, we stopped for tea at the midpoint. There was a small house cum shop and also a small temple. There we found a lonely British guy who called himself Garry. Apparently, he has been coming to India for almost a couple of decades. He works for a few months, saves money and rushes to India. And he was planning to spend that night at that shack in the midst of nowhere. This is how the mountains seduce people! Anyways, the last leg of the trek was eventless and I just got a few photographs clicked with silly poses to be used as display pics in various social media profiles.

The Dharamshala sojourn ends basically with this trek. You can read the guide below for complete information on Triund Trek. On the other hand, if you need more information on Dharamshala including what to do and where to eat, read this guide on Dharamshala .

Triund Trek: A Complete Guide

Where exactly is the triund trek located.

Triund is a popular day trek near McLeodganj (Dharamshala). However, serious trekkers can also go beyond Triund Top to Indrahar Pass and then cross over to Chamba District.

How long is the Trek?

Triund is around 9 kms from McLeod Ganj. You can save time by hiring an auto rickshaw to Dharamkot and then trekking the final 7 kms.

Can we camp atop Triund?

Back in 2012-2013 when I visited this area for the first time, both food and tents were easily available at the top. However, in order to counter littering and other environmental issues, camping was banned at Triund Top !

So, as of now, as far as I understand, Triund camping is not possible and you need to start early in the morning and come back to Dharamkot or McLeodganj before it is dark to be safe.

Any Alternative Camping Site?

I am not completely sure about it but as far as I know, you can go ahead of Triund and camp near Snowline . It is a point around 30 mins ahead of Triund, on the way to Indrahar Pass. In the good old days, there used to be one guy running a shack turned cafe turned camping site here. Not sure if he is still there!

So, what exactly is this Indrahar Pass?

Indrahar Pass is a 4300-meter high mountain pass connecting Kangra and Chamba districts. You will need multiple days for this and the route goes through Triund, SNoiwline, Laqa Got, and Lahesh Caves before finally reaching Indrahar Pass. People generally camp at SNowline and then the Cave.  I once made a failed attempt to Indrahar . Hopefully, I will complete it someday.

How much time does it take?

The ascent should take 4-5 hours depending on your physical ability. The descent will be faster. In any case, you will have to spend one whole day. Start early in the morning and try to come back before it’s too dark to be on the safer side.

What are the prerequisites for the trek?

It is one of the easy to moderate treks you will find in the Himalayas. But if you are not a regular trekker, make sure that you’re physically fit enough. Also, carry warm cloths and water with you. Earlier, there used to be shacks offering food along the route and at the top too. After the camping ban, I am not fully sure about that.

What is the Best time for Triund Trek?

It can be done throughout the year. Try the spring or early summer for the best colours. I did it once in November and once in October and they were comfortable too. But the extreme winter will be more challenging with low temperature and fog but people try it in Jan-Feb too in order to witness snow.

Guides for Triund Trek

You generally can do it yourself as the trail is well-marked. But if you must take one just inquire the travel agents in McLeod Ganj .

Lovely Images.

I have been to Mcleo and Dharamkot two time, this time I am planning to trek Triund in this may month and I am alone. Can you tell me from your experience would it be safe to trek Triund alone?

Thanks for dropping by… it should be fine even if you go alone if you are physically fit… it gets a bit hectic towards the last few yards… carry some water…

Very good post. I myself visited Triund and trekked further ahead to Ilaqa Snow line. It was an awesome experience. Your photos look terrific especially the clear sky. When I visited it was overcast and bit gloomy an absolute nightmare for photography. I liked your formatting especially the FAQs and will definitely imbibe it in my forthcoming travelogues including Triund with your kind permission 🙂 Of course I won’t copy the content and anyway I started from Naddi.

Hey! How about trekking at this time? Do you think monsoons will ruin t or what? Are there any arrangements to stay uphill?

I think it is fine… it is one of the easier treks… just get raincoats and shoes with good grip…

Ideally you can come back from Triund on the same day… but if you want to stay up there, I think there is a Forest guest house and some other private provisions too…

A Guide to the Triund Trek in McLeodGanj + Insider Tips (2024)

Triund Trek in McLeodGanj

If you’re planning on doing the Triund Trek in McLeodGanj, Dharamshala, you have come to the right place!

McLeodCanj, in the state of Himachal Pradesh, is most famous for being the home of the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibet. This town is close to the city of Dharamshala (a flight or night bus away from Delhi ) and tourists from all over the world come here to learn more about Buddhism and Tibetan culture.

There are plenty of interesting things to do in McLeodGanj , and this town is also home to one of the best Himalayan treks to do on your own: the trek to Triund Hill.

In this guide, you will find everything you need to know if you’re planning on trekking to Triund. You can hike to Triund in 1 or 2 days . I did this hike by myself in one day, but it is also possible to camp at Triund and hike back the next day, but more about this later!

How to do the Triund Trek in McLeodGanj

View on the way to Tirund Hill in McLeodGanj

There are two hiking trails to reach Triund Hill, and they both start in Bhagsu, which is a 20 to 30-minute walk from McLeodGanj.

While nearly everyone takes the easiest trail to hike to Triund and Back, I highly recommend making a loop and taking the easy trail to hike up and the difficult trail to hike back down.

I did it the other way around and took the difficult trail to hike up. This was my favourite one, as I only encountered two other hikers and found the landscape more beautiful here.

This guide describes how to hike up the easier way and hike back down the more difficult way. It speaks for itself that you can also do the hike the other way around as I did, though.

Tip: The way to Triund can easily be found using Maps.me. This app comes in particularly handy for the more difficult trail, as the path isn’t always as straightforward here.

Do you need a guide to hike to Triund?

Although you can hire a guide to do this trek, this is not necessary and many people hike independently. The path is easy to follow and the hike is not too difficult.

However, if you don’t have much hiking experience and would prefer to do the hike with a guide, you can book the guided Triund trek on GetYourGuide. This trek takes 2 days and includes a guide, camping and food.

Hiking from McLeodGanj to Triund

Triund Hill in Himachal Pradesh

If you’re starting in McLeodGanj, you will first have to head to Bhagsu , which is 2,5 km (1.5 mi) from McLeodGanj. You can either get here by walking or by taking a taxi.

From Bhagsu, you will have to hike (or continue the taxi drive) all the way up to the Gallu Devi Temple . This is where you will find the start of the path to Triund. It all depends on your personal pace, but it takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour to get from Bhagsu to Gallu. The right path can easily be found either by asking a local or using Maps.me.

From here on, it is pretty straightforward. There are arrows marking the way to Triund and it is difficult to get lost, as there’s only one path.

It takes a total of approximately 4 to 6 hours to reach Triund (the total distance is around 10 km or 6.2 mi), depending on your personal pace.

It is good to know that there are some shops and restaurants on the trail from Gallu to Triund.

Hiking to Triund Hill

Once you reach Triund, you will have a beautiful view of the Dhauladhar Mountain Range . This includes a view of Moon Peak, Riflehorn and Arthur’s seat.

It is quite big there and this is a nice place to stay for a while (or camp if you want to do the trek in 2 days). By the time I reached Triund, the sky wasn’t clear anymore and you couldn’t really see the mountains, but this is what it looks like on a clear day:

Triund Hill on a clear day

Camping at Triund (optional)

It is possible to camp at Triund if you would like to do the hike in 2 days, although it is possible to do it in 1 day too. I didn’t stay the night at Triund myself, but I’ve heard it is amazing, as you will be able to see the sunset/sunrise and sleep under the stars.

If you want to camp at Triund , it is good to know that you can rent a tent and sleeping bags in the shops there. If you’re visiting the place during the high season, at the weekend or in the holidays, it is better to book in advance, though, as the tents might be booked out (just ask the place where you’re staying in McLeodGanj to book it for you).

Another option is to stay at the government guesthouse . This place can be booked at the Forest Department Office of Dharamshala (+91 1892-224887).

Camping at Triund

Hiking further: the Laka Glacier Trek (optional)

I didn’t do this myself, but once you reach Triund, it is possible to hike further and do the Laka Glacier Trek. This is a 2 km (1.2 mi) long, steep uphill trek and it is quite strenuous.

This being said, this trek will take you higher along the breathtaking landscapes of the Dhauladhar snow-clad mountains and Kangra Valley. As its name predicts, the Laka Glacier Trek ends at the Laka Glacier, which stands 3,200 m (10,498 ft) above sea level.

It is good to know that you will need 2 or 3 days if you decide to hike to this glacier.

Hiking back to McLeodGanj

View of Bhagsu from Triund

To hike back to McLeodGanj, you can follow the Triund – Karthani Trail , on the southern side of Triund Hill. This trail will pass the Bhagsu Waterfall before reaching the centre of Bhagsu.

Note that the Triund – Karthani Trail is not as straightforward as the trail to hike up, but it is not so hard to follow with a little help from Maps.me.

This trail was my favourite part of the hike. It is not much frequented, the landscapes are amazing and I encountered plenty of sheep and goats along the way, which gave me some nice photo opportunities.

Sheep and goats on the Karthani Trail

Difficulty of the trek to Triund

The Triund Trek is considered a moderate trek . It is not too difficult, but you will need an average fitness level to complete it.

The elevation at Triund is 2,875 m (9,432 ft), while McLeodGanj is at 2,082 m (6,831 ft), so you will ascend about 800 m (2,600 ft) during the hike. This takes a total of 4 to 6 hours and the trek covers about 10 km (6.2 mi) one way.

Although you can do this trek in one day (which is what I did and it is very doable), it will be easier if you camp at Triund and split the hike into 2 days.

If you decide to hike further to the Laka Glacier, you will have to hike up an additional 325 m (1,066 ft).

Best time to do the Triund Trek

The best time to trek to Triund is in the Summer, between the months of March and June . This is when the weather will be at its best and the views will be most clear. You can expect temperatures between 15°C and 30°C (59°F and 86°F) at this time of the year.

July to September is the monsoon season. So this is not a good time to trek to Triund unless you don’t mind the rain and slipperiness.

The Winter lasts from October to February and it is possible to do the trek to Triund during this season too. Do note that there will be snow if you’re going in January or February.

Tips for hiking to Triund

  • Make a loop rather than going down the same way as you came up (this is what most people do).
  • Use Maps.me to navigate easily.
  • Bring water , snacks and sunscreen , and wear comfortable shoes . I wore hiking boots, but this trek can also be done with sneakers.
  • Consider camping for a night to see the sunset/sunrise.

Hike to Bhagsu Waterfall, one of the best places to visit in McLeodGanj

Where to stay in McLeodGanj

There are plenty of places to stay in and around McLeodganj. You can opt for McLeodGanj itself, Bhagsu or Dharamkot.

While McLeodGanj is the place where the Dalai Lama lives, Bhagsu is a 20-minute walk from here and it is quieter. Dharamkot is a 30-minute walk from Bhagsu and it is also quieter than McLeodGanj.

Although McLeodGanj is often referred to as Dharamshala , I would not stay in this city, as it is located 5 km (3.1 mi) downhill of McLeodGanj and it is far from the main tourist attractions.

I stayed in Bhagsu as well as in McLeodGanj while I was there, you will find my top recommendations below:

  • Shree Guest House ( ⭐ 8.3) : Shree Guest House was my favourite place to stay in the area. This guesthouse is located in a quiet area in McLeodGanj, just a 5 to 10-minute walk from the main street. The rooms are nice and clean, there’s a shared balcony, the wifi is good and Nadish, the owner, is amazing!
  • Hotel Norbu House (⭐ 9.3): If you’re looking for a more luxurious place to stay with a beautiful view, Hotel Norbu House is the place for you. This hotel is located in a quiet street, near the centre of McLeodGanj and it has all the amenities you might need.
  • Eevolve Dharamkot (⭐ 8.3): Located in Dharamkot, this eco hostel offers beautiful rooms and a garden. This is a great place to stay if you’re planning on staying in the area for a little longer and would like to enrol in yoga classes, for example.

Triund Trek in McLeodGanj: Final thoughts

The trek to Triund is one of the most popular hikes in Dharamshala and it is easy to understand why. Not only are the landscapes beautiful, but this is also a trek that can easily be done independently.

All in all, this was a trek I really enjoyed, even though the sky wasn’t clear anymore by the time I reached Triund. If I would do it again, I would camp at Triund as this increases the chance of having a clear view.

I hope that this guide was clear and that you have found exactly what you were looking for. Let me know in the comments below if you have any questions. I’m updating this post frequently.
