Now streaming on:
"Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" looks like nothing so much as one of those live-action adventures that Disney used to grind out in the 1950s — and hey, here's Captain Nemo's Nautilus to prove it. Also, a tree house to humble "Swiss Family Robinson," which contains a short-wave radio that has been assembled from old spoons, I think I heard.
The movie is very, very loosely a sequel to " Journey to the Center of the Earth ," with only two connections: It's inspired by a Jules Verne novel, and it co-stars young Josh Hutcherson as the hero Sean. The film opens with him on a motorcycle and being chased by cops, but not to worry; all he did was break into a satellite-tracking station to boost the power on a message for help sent by his grandfather from a lost island in the Pacific.
Sean, whose father in the first film ( Brendan Fraser ) has disappeared (from the cast, anyway), now has to deal with Hank ( Dwayne Johnson , aka the Rock). Hank is his new stepdad. Josh and Hank make friends by decrypting grandfather's message; Hank glances at it and intuits that the two-syllable words stand for dots and one-syllable words stand for dashes, which means Grandpa has had enough free time on his remote island to figure out a way to make Morse code several times longer than it previously was. Unanswered is why grandfather would encrypt a call for help.
This Hank, what a swell guy. He proposes that the two of them fly off to the Pacific and find Grandpa. On arrival somewhere, they hire a tourist helicopter pilot named Gabato, played by Luis Guzman as another one of those low-comedy guys who gets all worked up and is scared of stuff. (I enjoyed a reprise of this classic shot: Gabato runs toward camera, falls on stomach, looks up …and up … and up.)
Gabato has a daughter named Kailani ( Vanessa Hudgens ), a Polynesian beauty who wears a tank top and Daisy Dukes throughout the film. These four fly off in the helicopter, are trapped in a Force Five hurricane that rips it to pieces and are lucky enough to find themselves alive on the beach of the Mysterious Island.
This is your complete island. It has an active volcano; waterfalls with no apparent water sources streaming down cliffs; elephants the size of dogs, and giant lizards that are nowhere big enough to account for the size of their eggs. (Josh falls through the shell of one, splashes in a pool of yolk and is attacked by an unborn lizard chick.) Also on the island is the lost city of Atlantis, even though it's in the wrong ocean, and bees so big Sean and Kailani can both ride on the back of one. And Alexander Anderson, Sean's grandfather, played by Michael Caine , who will not be editing this role into his videos about how to act in movies.
I hope you understand I enjoyed most of this stuff. The director, Brad Peyton , apparently intended it as a genial parody of countless other movies in this spirit. There is, for example, a scene were Sean, Grandpa, Kailani and Gabato all sit around the old campfire and listen while Hank strums a ukulele and sings "What a Wonderful World." And I mean he sings it: every word of three verses. It's not every day you see the Rock channeling Gene Autry.
Sean deduces that Verne's novel contains everything they need to know, and this comes in handy when the volcano explodes, and the island begins to sink into the sea. Sure enough, Captain Nemo's submarine is still hidden underwater. Hank and Sean, trusting Verne, dive off a high cliff, and while holding their breath and swimming underwater, are able to (1) find the sub, (2) open the hatch by tugging and twisting it, (3) swim inside, (4) push a lever to fill it with air, and (5) get the power generator working by jump-starting it with an electric eel.
This is transcendently goofy. It isn't a "good" movie in the usual sense (or most senses), but it is jolly and good-natured, and Michael Caine and Dwayne Johnson are among the most likable of actors. Johnson is such a good sport, he even shows young Sean how to impress girls by flexing your pecs so quickly that nuts will ricochet off them. I can't think of any reason to pay extra for the 3-D.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island
- Sean Anderson partners with his mom's husband on a mission to find his grandfather, who is thought to be missing on a mythical island.
- Ever since his adventure in the center of the Earth, Sean Anderson has been looking for other places mentioned by Verne and other Vernians. He is notified about a coded message, and breaks into a satellite facility to fully receive it. With the help from his stepfather Hank (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson) he decodes the message leading him to find the map that leads him to Verne's mysterious island. Along with Gabato and Kailani, Sean embarks on a mission to find his grandfather, the legendary Vernian Alexander. But unexpected problems arise as Alexander made a mistake that could change everything. — Anonymous User - Earth
- After travelling to the center of the Earth, Sean Anderson, now seventeen, has been at the usual teen schemes lately. His latest crime lands him to finding something extraordinary, a key to a chunk of land in the Pacific Ocean. Sean teams up with his stepfather, Hank, to get there, and they meet an overeager chopper pilot, and his teenage daughter, to get to Sean's grandfather, Alexander, only to discover the mysterious island.
- After going to the center of the Earth, seventeen-year-old Sean Andeson goes on a journey to find The Mysterious Island, a legend discovered by Jules Verne. Assisted by his stepfather, Hank, the pair team up with a helicopter pilot and his beautiful daughter to find Sean's lost grandfather, whom Sean believes is on the island. The team encounters monsters, witty remarks, and a deadly conflict along the way.
- A young male, his stepfather, and a pair of travel guides travel to an island that is not as it seems. Once they find out that the island is sinking, they do everything that they can to find a way off the island and get back home safely with the help of an experienced relative. — RECB3
- 17-year-old Sean Anderson receives a coded distress signal from a mysterious island where no island should exist. Unable to stop him from tracking the signal to its source, Sean's new stepfather, Hank, joins the quest that will take them first to the South Pacific, and then to a place few people have ever seen. Or lived to tell about. It's a place of stunning beauty, strange and threatening life forms, volcanoes, mountains of gold and more than one astonishing secret. Together with Gabato, the only helicopter pilot willing to risk the trip, and Gabato's beautiful, strong-willed daughter Kailani, they set out to find the island, rescue its lone human inhabitant and escape before seismic shockwaves force the island underwater and bury its treasures forever.

Rotten Tomatoes® Score
Journey 2: The Mysterious Island immediately recognizes its audience and, fully accepting its constraints, pleases them with its fabulous drive and its intrinsic linearity. [Full review in Spanish]
There’s nothing about this family-friendly movie that’s outrageously offensive, but there’s nothing about it that’s particularly interesting, well-executed, or inventively conceived either.
...entertaining yet chintzy...
A screenplay that never quite clicks on all cylinders. There are too many scenes dealing with relationships that really halt any momentum.
Journey 2 is simply magical.
Undeniably an exhilarating family friendly, action adventure that'll no doubt thrill younger audiences.
Like its predecessor, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is a race against time to survive, but the inclusion of new characters adds a little more interest.
For a family, this is an agreeable Saturday outing, largely because director Brad Peyton doesn't set his sight higher than the material actually is.
"Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" is light, airy family entertainment that actually ends up being too light and airy.
It's a harmless, lighthearted film with wooden acting, a nice message about accepting your parents-whoever they are-and again, lots of ridiculous CGI.

Educational Value
The movie is intended to entertain rather than educate.
Positive Messages
Families work hard to stick together and stand by each other, even if that requires making sacrifices. Teens learn to understand and respect their parents and guardians. Together, and by using teamwork, the group is able to overcome many giant-sized challenges.
Positive Role Models
The movie's two father figures are both positive role models. Neither is perfect -- they have moments of bull-headedness, cowardice, and other flaws -- but they're completely devoted to their kids and will never give up, even if that means making sacrifices or facing fears. A young woman shows that she can take care of herself.
Violence & Scariness
Giant monsters roar and chase the main characters; many of those chases end up with the creatures getting smushed and crunched. There's a somewhat scary helicopter crash scene and some "gross out" scenes as well.

Sex, Romance & Nudity
Kailani (Vanessa Hudgens) is shown in slow-motion letting down her hair and removing a button-up shirt to reveal a tight-fitting tank top. Her cleavage is sometimes visible. She and Sean often argue in a flirty way, and there's a kiss at the end.

Sporadic use of potty talk and mild language -- mostly during loud chase scenes -- as well as insults; words include "hell," "oh my God," "ass," "piss,'' "poop," and ''crap."

Products & Purchases
Sean opens and drinks from a Coca-Cola in an early scene. The label isn't clearly on view, but the bottle's shape and color are unmistakable.
Drinking, Drugs & Smoking
Not an issue except for a quick, humorous line of dialogue: "What were you drinking?"

Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is the sequel to 2008's entertaining Journey to the Center of the Earth . The Hunger Games ' Josh Hutcherson is the sole returning cast member, but the tone is very similar to the original. Overall, it's a family-friendly adventure -- albeit one with frequent tense chases, monster attacks, and a somewhat scary helicopter crash (some of which is a bit more intense in the movie's 3-D version). There's also flirting and a kiss between the two main teen characters, and co-star Vanessa Hudgens is often shown wearing a tight, cleavage-enhancing tank top. Expect some gross-out humor, as well as potty talk and very sporadic mild language ("ass," "hell," etc.). This is no cinematic classic, but it is bright and cheerful and has positive characters, including fatherly role models. After surviving his Journey to the Center of the Earth , Sean Anderson ( Josh Hutcherson ) is back living with his mom ( Kristin Davis ) and step-dad, Hank ( Dwayne Johnson ). Sean gets a coded message from his grandfather about the location of Jules Verne's famed "Mysterious Island." Hoping for some much-needed bonding time, Hank volunteers to go with him. In Palau, they hire a ramshackle helicopter, piloted by Gabato (Luis Guzman). Happily for Sean, Gabato's pretty daughter, Kailani ( Vanessa Hudgens ), comes with the deal. After crashing on the island, the explorers discover a world of tiny elephants, huge bees, and lost cities. But they also realize that they must find Sean's grandfather -- and discover a way off the island before time runs out.
Is It Any Good?
From the director of Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore , JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND is as clumsy and clunky as its title. The pace is speedy, but it seems as though the movie sacrificed logic, character, mood, and rhythm to achieve that speed. Moreover, the visual effects appear soft and never quite mesh with the real stuff. Even the 3D effects don't really add anything except for the occasional "comin' at ya" moment.
On the plus side, the movie has an inviting, warm, open-air feel, and it's more innocuous than it is obnoxious. Strong, positive characters -- including a young woman who can take care of herself -- and family bonding moments are also very appealing. Not to mention that this is the only movie in which you can see former pro wrestler Dwayne Johnson (a.k.a. "The Rock") playing the ukulele and singing "What a Wonderful World."
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about Journey 2 's violence and scary stuff. How does its fantasy nature affect its impact? How do the movie's intense experiences affect Sean and his step-dad's relationship?
How does the movie portray families? How does that message/depiction compare to what you've seen in other movies and TV shows?
How does the movie portray fathers? There's a theme of "missing dads," but there are also great dad characters here. What's the take-away?
The first Journey movie was an adaptation of a Jules Verne novel; this movie's title also cites a Verne book but isn't a direct adaptation. What other books does it remind you of? Are there any you'd like to read after watching the movie?

Where Was Journey 2 The Mysterious Island Filmed?
Brad Peyton helmed the blockbuster adventure movie ‘Journey 2: The Mysterious Island,’ the second installment in the Jules Verne-inspired ‘Journey’ series. Upon discovering a signal from Sean’s grandfather Alexander Anderson, Sean and his stepdad, Hank, set out for a sprawling adventure filled with lush greenery and uncanny creatures. They arrive in the far-flung island country of Palau, regroup with Alexander thanks to a cyclone, and embark on a search for the lost city of Atlantis.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson delivers a hilarious performance alongside Michael Caine , Luis Guzmán, Vanessa Hudgens , and Josh Hutcherson. Most of the story unveils in the turbulent pacific, while the finale takes place on a dreamy island. However, you may seek to identify the locations where the movie was filmed. If that is the case, let us divulge before you everything we know.
Journey 2 The Mysterious Island Filming Locations
‘Journey 2: The Mysterious Island’ was filmed in locations in and around the U.S., especially in Hawaii. Filming commenced on October 25, 2010, and was wrapped up by December 15 of the same year. Let us now take you to the specific locations where the movie was filmed!
O’ahu, Hawaii
Most parts of the movie were filmed in Hawaii, possibly including the Atlantis scenes. The director took his team to Kualoa Ranch, a 4,000-acre vast nature reserve, event venue, cattle ranch, and most importantly, a famous filming destination in Hawaii. Situated at 49560 Kamehameha Highway in the community of Ka’a’awa, at around 24 miles from Honolulu, the ranch is a popular tourist destination in the city.
The reserve has been home to more than 79 movie productions, including blockbusters such as ‘Jurassic Park,’ ‘ 50 First Dates ,’ and ‘Pearl Harbor.’ Look for the scene where they are heading towards the submarine, at around 46 minutes mark. You can locate the open space where filming of ‘ Jurassic Park ‘ took place.
Several scenes were also filmed at the Waimea Bay and its adjacent Waimea Bay Beach Park, located at 61-31 Kamehameha Highway in the community of Haleiwa along the north shore of O’ahu. Due to its situation at the mouth of the Waimea River and the proximity of several tourist places, Waimea Bay sees footfall all around the year. In the summer, you can go out surfing, while in the winter, you can enjoy the view of the towering waves with a bonfire.
Wilmington, North Carolina
The production team carried out several scenes in a controlled studio environment. The movie presumably contains several CGI-aided sequences, and the scenes were possibly developed in a full-service production facility in the community of Wilmington off the coast of North Carolina. EUE / Screen Gems Studios, a movie production facility located at 1223 North 23rd Street, lent its premises to film scenes.
The 50-acre expansive studio facility features ten fully equipped soundstages and a back-lot to tackle any global-scale production. Since its inception in 1985, more than 400 titles have come out of the studio. Movies filmed in the studio include blockbusters such as ‘ The Conjuring ‘ and ‘Iron Man 3.’ ‘Iron Man 3’ was one of the most significant projects the studio had ever seen, with filming taking place in all the ten soundstages simultaneously.
New York City, New York
Lastly, a few scenes at the movie’s beginning were filmed on location in New York City. New York City remains one of the most iconic places to shoot a film due to the city’s cultural significance. From Martin Scorsese’s ‘ Taxi Driver ‘ to Woody Allen ‘s ‘ Manhattan ,’ the towering landscape of New York City has been featured in timeless classics.

Journey 3 updates: why the moon sequel isn't happening.
While the franchise was set to continue with Journey 3: From The Earth To The Moon, the movie was canned. Here's why Journey 3 isn't happening.
- Journey 3: From The Earth To The Moon was canceled due to difficulty in writing the script and Dwayne Johnson's busy schedule.
- The franchise struggled to find a solid script after the success of the second movie, but it may have been for the best considering the lack of fanbase.
- Dwayne Johnson's recent projects have stuck to the familiar tone of the Journey movies, offering audiences similar all-ages adventures.
While the franchise appeared to be riding high after the success of the second movie, Journey 3: From The Earth To The Moon was ultimately canceled and Journey 3 is officially not happening, The series launched with 2008’s Journey To The Center Of The Earth , which was based on the famous novel by Jules Verne and starred Brendan Fraser and Josh Hutcherson. Reviewers found the movie gimmicky due to its use of 3D but it was a solid hit for the studio. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island adapted another Jules Verne novel The Mysterious Island with Dwayne Johnson replacing Brendan Fraser as the main protagonist.
Journey 2 was an even bigger hit than the original, with reviews praising the inclusion of Johnson as the franchise's new leading man . Journey 3 was soon confirmed by the studio, which would adapt Verne’s From The Earth To The Moon , which was initially also going to be filmed alongside Journey 4 . During this era, Johnson made his debut in the Fast and Furious franchise as well as joining 2013's G.I. Joe: Retaliation , cementing his reputation as an actor who could turn around struggling franchises. However, his powers failed to work further on the Journey series as Journey 3 stalled and has since been canceled.
All 6 Movies Where Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson Is In The Jungle
Journey 3 proved too hard to write, dwayne johnson's busy schedule also caused delays to the journey 2 sequel.
It appears Dwayne Johnson’s hectic workload and focus on other projects when Journey 3 & 4 were still being planned kept pushing them back. Almost nothing was heard about Journey 3 from 2015 to 2018 when Johnson confirmed Journey 3 was canceled because they couldn’t crack the script. This wasn’t much of a shock, considering it had been six years since Journey 2 by that point and there had been little sign of movement on the project. Following the gigantic success of Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle, Johnson moved his attention to that family-friendly adventure franchise with a similar tone which has already become more successful.
In the same way The Mummy star Brendan Fraser was replaced by Dwayne Johnson, the studio could have brought on a new lead actor for Journey 3. However, further recasting would not help the franchise losing both Johnson and Fraser. While the first two movies were fun adventures, Journey wasn’t a franchise that had a burning fanbase either, so it’s easy to see how it fell between the cracks. Johnson’s admission they had trouble coming up with a solid script indicates it might be a good thing Journey 3 didn’t ultimately move ahead too.
Director Brad Peyton and Johnson reteamed again for 2018’s video game adaptation Rampage , and while San Andreas 2 was planned, that feels like another sequel that got lost in the shuffle of Dwayne Johnson’s franchise-heavy schedule. It’s disappointing Journey 3: From The Earth To The Moon didn’t come together, but audiences will have plenty of other Dwayne Johnson movies in the future to make up for it.
All 30 Dwayne Johnson Action Movies Ranked Worst To Best
The movies journey fans can see dwayne johnson in instead, johnson's recent projects have stuck to the familiar tone of the journey movies.
Sadly for Journey fans, the past few years have brought with them no signs that Journey 3 might be back on Dwayne Johnson's upcoming slate. Even with the lackluster performance of Black Adam in the DCU , The Rock has kept busy, with Jungle Cruise in particular honoring the spirit of the Journey franchise. Johnson also starred in Netflix's action/comedy Red Notice alongside Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot. He's also set to star in Jake Kasdan's holiday adventure film Red One alongside Chris Evans in 2024. These movies all capture that all-ages adventure that was achieved in the first Journey movies and that Johnson has stuck to in recent years.
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson’s Franchises Ranked Worst To Best
The rock entered the dceu twice in 1 year, could johnson's failed move into the superhero genre help journey 3.
The multi-talented Dwayne Johnson also broke new ground in 2022 by making his debut in the superhero genre. Johnson actually joined the DCU twice over in the same year with both Black Adam and DC League of Super-Pets . He plays the titular villain/anti-hero in the former movie, and in the latter, he voices Superman's pet, Krypto the Superdog . The animated DC League of Super-Pets continued to deliver the family-friendly mix of humor and adventure Johnson has gravitated towards, particularly because Johnson was joined by one of his most consistent and hilarious co-stars, Kevin Hart, who voices Ace the Bat-Hound.
Black Adam , on the other hand, was a much darker film. Black Adam's DC Comics origin is a gruesome one, and the character mainly appears as an antagonist to Shazam and Superman, although Dwayne Johnson's film shifted that narrative somewhat focusing on Black Adam as a standalone character. This move into the DCU proved unsuccessful with Black Adam sequels already being nixed, the Superman cameo becoming awkward after Henry Cavill's recasting , and the box-office failure of Shazam!: Fury of the Gods . Perhaps this setback will cause Johnson to rethink Journey 3: From the Earth to the Moon .

Greetings, Polygon readers! Each week, we round up the most notable new releases to streaming and VOD, highlighting the biggest and best new movies for you to watch at home.
This week, Unfrosted , Jerry Seinfeld's comedy about the invention of Pop-Tarts, premieres on Netflix. If brand biopics aren’t your bag, there’s certainly no shortage of new releases to choose from this week. The coming-of-age teen drama Turtles All The Way Down releases on Max this weekend, alongside the remaster of Jonathan Demme’s classic concert film Stop Making Sense , a new romcom starring Anne Hathaway on Prime Video, and much more.
Here’s everything new that’s available to watch this weekend!
New on Netflix
Where to watch: Available to stream on Netflix
Genre: Comedy Run time: 1h 33m Director: Jerry Seinfeld Cast: Jerry Seinfeld, Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan
Nowadays it feels like everyone and every thing is getting the biopic-comedy movie treatment. Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, Blackberry mobile phones, Nike Jordan sneakers — you name it. Unfrosted is the latest in this emerging trend, chronicling the sorta-true story of how Kellog’s beat their competitors to market with their patented Pop-Tart product.
From our review :
Despite its family-friendly veneer, Unfrosted is a resolutely cynical work. Step outside of the candy-colored glow of its warm cinematography and the picture is bleak. Just as Pop-Tarts come from the executives in the film studying trash, Hollywood’s desperation for marketable IP means studios are happy to greenlight literal garbage. What does it mean that Jerry Seinfeld — a man who never needs to work another day in his life if he doesn’t want to, a guy mostly famous these days for simply hanging out — is back with a movie that proves Hollywood will greenlight a film about any old brand, no matter how nonsensical?
New on Hulu
Where to watch: Available to stream on Hulu
Genre: Coming-of-age comedy Run time: 1h 30m Director: Kim O. Nguyen Cast: Julia Lester, Antonia Gentry, JT Neal
After unexpectedly breaking up with both of their dates, a pair of high school friends hatch a plot to find new dates in time for their senior prom. As their prospects dwindle, the two are left with no other choice: Sneak into a college party and find new dates there.
Turtles All The Way Down
Where to watch: Available to stream on Max
Genre: Romantic drama Run time: 1h 51m Director: Hannah Marks Cast: Isabela Merced, Cree Cicchino, Felix Mallard
Based on John Green’s 2017 young adult novel, Isabela Merced ( Dora and the Lost City of Gold ) stars as Aza Holmes, a 16-year-old struggling with obsessive-compulsive disorder who reunites with her childhood crush, the son of a fugitive billionaire. As Aza attempts to pursue the disappearance of her crush’s billionaire father, she’ll grow to learn to live with and overcome her challenges to pursue her happiness.
In a way, Max’s Turtles All the Way Down is an anti-John Green adaptation — at least, it’s anti preconceived notions of John Green. He’s been trying from his very first novel to deconstruct the tropes he accidentally became known for. But sometimes it takes an outside hand to free a story from judgment and give it a new form, so it can shine without an author’s (however ill-attributed) reputation on it. Marks crafts a fulfilling coming-of-age story from Green’s book. Turtles has familiar John Green touchpoints — a gimmicky story setup, a teen romance, a quirky best friend — but it turns the story inward and pulls off a fantastic character exploration, one that feels like a gut-punch in its best moments.
Stop Making Sense
Genre: Concert movie Run time: 1h 28m Director: Jonathan Demme
You may find yourself at home on your couch, looking for something to watch. And you may find yourself scrutinizing what’s new on streaming and VOD. And you may find yourself intrigued by the latest 4K remaster of Jonathan Demme’s acclaimed concert film of the Talking Heads performing. And you may ask yourself, Well, why don’t I watch that?
New on Prime Video
The idea of you.
Where to watch: Available to stream on Prime Video
Genre: Romantic comedy Run time: 1h 55m Director: Michael Showalter Cast: Anne Hathaway, Nicholas Galitzine, Ella Rubin
Is it really possible for a 20-something rock star and a 40-something single mom to be in a relationship? Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine) and Solène Marchand (Anne Hathaway) are about to find out in this romantic comedy based on Robinne Lee’s 2017 novel.
New on Peacock
The american society of magical negroes.
Where to watch: Available to stream on Peacock
Genre: Fantasy rom-com Run time: 1h 45m Director: Kobi Libii Cast: Justice Smith, David Alan Grier, An-Li Bogan
Kobi Libii’s directorial debut stars Justice Smith ( Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves ) as Aren, a young biracial artist who is recruited to join a clandestine group of magical Black people who secretly help white people in their mission to solve racism. You can probably guess about how well that goes.
New on AMC Plus
American star.
Where to watch: Available to stream on AMC Plus
Genre: Action thriller Run time: 1h 47m Director: Gonzalo López-Gallego Cast: Ian McShane, Nora Arnezeder, Thomas Kretschmann
Ian McShane ( John Wick , Deadwood ) stars as an over-the-hill contract killer who embarks to the tropical island Fuerteventura to fulfill his last assignment before retirement. While waiting for his target, he finds himself drawn to the people of the island and their lives there, and begins to contemplate what life he would like to build after he puts his career as an assassin behind him.
New on Metrograph At Home

Citrus grower invests in one of Australia's largest outdoor medicinal cannabis facilities
Inside an ultra-secure location in South Australia one of the country's biggest medicinal cannabis farms is harvesting its first crop.
Third-generation citrus grower Brad Gallard, who is at the helm of the multi-million-dollar MedTec Pharma operation in the Riverland region, said it had take almost five years to get to where he was and he was yet to make a cent.
After exploring the viability of several other crops, including hemp, he decided to push forward with medicinal cannabis.
"The latitude of 34 degrees is really what cannabis does like, there's obviously certain strains that can do a colder climate, or more humid climates," he said.
"But they do say where citrus grows, cannabis grows really well too."
Aside from the opportunities of an in-demand industry, Mr Gallard said the decision to move into plant medicine was personal.
"My father had Parkinson's disease and my mum had scleroderma and ulcers … and they tried a bit of their product just after it was legal and saw a reasonable result for at least a few days," he said.
"So I thought, I'd better look into it."
Less than six months ago a patch of dirt marked the site where three hectares of sun-grown organic cannabis plants are being harvested by hand.
Despite some similarities between growing fruit and cannabis, Mr Gallard said the learning curve had been steep.
"This is obviously a much faster acting crop, there's no doubt about that," he said.
Mr Gallard said cannabis required similar fertilisers and a similar amount of water to citrus, which in his case came from irrigation.
The operation is one of only a handful in Australia where the plants are grown outdoors, rather than in a glasshouse or building, which reduced electricity costs.
Beneficial insects and rigorous biosecurity processes including being a smoke-free work site were in place to protect the crop from diseases such as tobacco virus.
"All our boots and clothes stay on site, so we make sure that nothing comes from anywhere else," Mr Gallard said.
Employment opportunities
About 30 staff are employed by MedTEC, with the potential for the workforce to grow to 100 people across the entire business.
Serena Lange hadn't even graduated from her agribusiness degree when she was chosen for a role with the company.
Ms Lange said she never imagined a career in the medicinal cannabis industry.
"It's incredibly exciting and there's so much learning to be done," she said.
With the region's main crop of wine grapes under pressure due to the red wine oversupply , it is seen as vital that new industries develop to provide opportunities for the area to diversify.
The latest figures from the Therapeutic Goods Association show about 1.2 million Australians have accessed medicinal cannabis since it was legalised.
While Australia has the world's fastest growing medicinal cannabis market, about 80 per cent of what is consumed domestically is imported.
Research scientist Emily Rigby said she launched the Australian Cannabis Cultivators Group last year to help producers increase domestic supply.
Ms Rigby said the onerous requirements of acquiring licensing and permits were a barrier to increasing medicinal cannabis production.
"There's a huge potential for us around Australia because we're able to provide jobs," she said.
"I really think we do need to see the government get a little more behind to help this emerging industry, while we are learning."
Research and development
MedTec Pharma is not only growing cannabis outdoors.
The company also has indoor grow rooms and plans to build a lab to develop new strains to grow from seed to shelf.
The mother room, kept at a constant 24 degrees and 80 per cent humidity, is where the team nurtures the female cannabis plants to take cuttings and clones.
With more than a dozen varieties of medicinal cannabis being cultivated on site, Ms Lange said record keeping was an important part of her role.
"Traceability is huge throughout the entire process, right from the genetic stock through to production, and harvesting," she said.
It has been a long journey for Mr Gallard and his team but it is not the first time he has taken on a venture filled with risk.
He has successfully raced in the iconic Finke Desert race near Alice Springs multiple times, and taken home a win .
"I was a bit nervous about a few things for both [starting MedTEC and racing] but certainly this venture has been a lot of our life and really engulfed us," he said.
Mr Gallard said the next step was to develop the crop from three to ten hectares for the next year's harvest.
"It's been really exciting and we are really looking forward to the things to come."
