San Blas Islands of Panama 🌴

San Blas islands

The San Blas islands are a group of islands in the archipelago de San Blas, located in the Northwest of Panama facing the Caribbean Sea. There are about 378 islands in the archipelago which are scattered around in an area of roughly 100 square miles. If you leave the Golfo de San Blas by boat you will enter the Caribbean Sea.

The majority of the 378 islands have no inhabitants, but on the few larger ones you will find the gentle native people known as the Kuna’s. These natives can be found on islands such as Aguja Island, Guanidup Island, Chichimei, Yandup Island and El Porvenir . San Blas is an autonomous territory of Panama formally called Kuna Yala , with reference to the native inhabitants. It translates directly to “ Land of the Kuna “.

What will you find in San Blas?

Driftwood ans sailboats in San Blas

The San Blas islands are viewed by many as the number #1 vacation destination in Panama and presumably in the whole of Central America. It will be definitely one of the highlights of your travel to Panama.

You may wonder why the location is so amazing? Well the islands are not yet discovered by the massive tourism industry and in full control by the native Kuna’s. The Kuna’s protect their lands against mass tourism and keep them healthy, pristine and beautiful. This makes the San Blas islands of Panama unique if you are searching for off the beaten track and untouched nature in combination with some traditional culture. Just check out these pictures of San Blas !

Traditional Kuna canoe

Hop from island to island with the Kuna as travel guides in their canoes or just relax at the white sand beaches and enjoy the bioluminescence spectacle in the sea at night. Eat some fresh lobster or red snapper right from the barbecue and detox from your phone as connection isn’t rock solid in this area. Sleeping in eco-friendly accommodations made by the Guna’s Indians from natural materials which they found on the islands and in the jungle surrounding the area. You will become peace and tranquillity yourself.

Getting there and around

San Blas Islands

The most common way to get around in the San Blas archipelago is by sailing from island to island by private or charter boat. You can also ask the locals to hop you around in their canoes or boats. Book flights from Panama City to the airports located on El Porvenir, Playon Chico, Achutupu, Ogobsucum or Corazon de Jesus in San Blas to get to the area fast. But driving to Guna Yala (San Blas) is also possible and probably more fun, as you will have to take a 4×4 jeep from Panama City to Carti.

How many San Blas Islands are there? There are 378 islands in the San Blas archipelago, of which 49 inhabited by the native Kuna Indians. The total San Blas area is approximately 100 square miles. Kuna

Travelling on your own to San Blas is probably the most common way to get around for travellers and backpackers. It is easy to find overnight stay in rooms, cabins, tents (camping), hammocks or book various tours and day-trips on different Islands such as Porvenir, Franklin, Nadi, Kikirdub, Asuelo and more. Local operators offer their services in English & Spanish and of course in the Guna language. Day trips are also possible from Panama City but not recommended as you will want to stay on the islands for at least a few nights.

The native inhabitants are called the Guna/Kuna

San Blas Guna indian with molas

The native people living on the Islands of San Blas call themselves Kuna’s or Guna’s . The district/region in Panama where you can meet the natives is officially named after them and carries the name of Guna Yala or Kuna Yala. The Kuna’s are a community of proud people that have their own laws, norms and values that go with their centuries old culture. Which, is different than the traditional Panamanian culture.

Since the last headcount of all the Kuna Indians an estimated 300.000 live in Panama, Costa Rica and Colombia, only 50.000 of them still live on the San Blas islands. When you visit the San Blas Islands don’t forget to try some of the traditional Kuna food or try out some molas .

Imagine a turquoise archipelago with one island for every day of the year. With white sand and waving palms, these Caribbean islands cheat no one’s version of Paradise. San Blas is Home to the Kuna, an autonomous indigenous group who run San Blas with minimal interference from the national government. Lonely Planet

After the revolution of 1925, they are their own autonomous nation and their strict controls over the islands preventing over-fishing have kept the San Blas Islands a unique gem in Panama if not the world. No scuba diving but AMAZING snorkeling and marine life remain thanks to their strict laws and commitment to their environment. Join one of our San Blas Islands One Day tours to get a taste of the beauty of the Islands and its people inhabiting it, or stay a night or two and really immerse yourself in a multi-day excursion in Guna Yala culture. Guna Yala, Panama

Northern Panama Indian Reserve

Guna Yala Panama

Guna Yala means “Guna Territory” in Kuna language. This region along the eastern Caribbean Coast of Panama is also known as San Blas, a name the Spanish Conquistadores gave it which is still used today. The Kuna have their own authorities within their lands and live based on old traditions and customs. They support themselves selling millions of coconuts from the palms that dot their islands as well as selling their internationally renowned Mola handicraft – a reverse stitched embroidery. These Molas are hand-made and sold as wall hangings, pillow cases, and can be sewn on carry-bags, blouses, etc. If you don’t have the chance to personally visit with the Kuna, you will find Molas in most of the souvenir stores around Panama.

Guna Yala consists of a corridor along the Caribbean Sea that extends for approx. 125 miles (200 km) between the Colon Province to the west, and the State of Colombia to the east. Guna Yala includes some 365 islands that together form the archipelago. Some of these beautiful islands have been welcome travelers to enjoy the gorgeous white sand beaches and blue waters, and to gain an insight into the Kuna culture. Next to relaxation, visitors are offered various activities with snorkeling being one of the main attractions.

Location and Map

Taking a 4×4 and a boat to Guna Yala is the only alternative to flying.

san blas adventures san blas islands

The name was officially changed from San Blas, as it was originally named by the Spanish, to Kuna Yala in October 2011.

san blas adventures san blas islands

500 years ago, when the Spanish came to the Americas the Kuna were living in what is now Colombia. Due to conflict with the Spanish, and later with other indigenous groups, they moved into the Darien and then to the coast, populating the islands for the first time in the 1800’s.

In Kuna Yala there are 49 villages, 42 of which are on islands with 7 on the main land. Kuna traditionally sleep in hammocks in grass huts. The walls are made of cane sticks lashed to posts with a fibrous plant, and a roof of palm leaves.

san blas adventures san blas islands

A side from the islands the Kuna territory (comarca) stretches deep into the jungle. In traditional areas on a typical day they would get up before dawn and row their wooden dugout canoe (cayuco) to the mainland to tend to their crops for the morning, coming back around midday, and maybe going for a fish in the afternoon.

Traditional Kuna cuisine is very simple. The most common dish “Tule masi” (literally meaning Kuna food) is a soup whose main ingredients are plantain and fish. It’s also very common for them to smoke fish as a way to preserve it.

In Kuna Yala, each community has its own political organization, led by a Saila, pronounced (“sai-lah”). The Saila is traditionally both the political and spiritual leader of the community; he memorizes songs which relate the sacred history of the people, and in turn transmits them to the people.

Decisions are made in meetings held in the Onmaked Nega, or Ibeorgun Nega (Congress House or Casa de Congreso), a structure which likewise serves both political and spiritual purposes. It is in the Onmaked Nega that the Saila sings the history, legends and laws of the Kuna, as well as administering the day-to-day political and social affairs.

The Saila is usually accompanied by one or more voceros who function as interpreters and counselors for the Saila. Because the songs and oral history of the Kuna are in a higher linguistic register with specialized vocabulary, the Saila’s recitation will frequently be followed by an explanation and interpretation from one of the voceros in everyday Kuna language. The region as a whole is governed by the Kuna General Congress, which is led by three Saila Dummagan (“Great Sailas”).

Kuna Yala is the biggest coconut plantation in the world, supplying Colombia with most of their coconuts. Coconuts are like money for the Kuna, they trade them with commercial boats coming through for other goods.

The Kuna language is a Native American language of the Chibchan family spoken by 50,000 to 70,000 people. Dulegaya is the primary language of daily life in the comarcas, and the majority of Kuna children speak the language. Spanish is also widely used, especially in education and written documents. Although it is relatively viable, Kuna is considered an endangered language.

Women have a very important role in the Kuna culture. All their traditional ceremonies celebrate the phases of a woman’s development. In mythology the woman represents the mother earth and therefore everything comes from her.

One thing that stands out when you arrive in a Kuna village is the traditional dress of the woman. They wear long strings of colorful beads on their wrists and ankles, sometimes a gold

Molas are a colourful layered textile made by the Kuna women and have their origin in body painting.

Only after colonization by the Spanish and contact with missionaries did the Kuna start to transfer their traditional geometric designs on fabric, first by painting directly on the fabric and later by using the technique of reverse application. It is not known for certain when this technique was first used. It is assumed that the oldest molas are between 150 and 170 years old.

The artistry of a mola reflects a synthesis of traditional Kuna culture with the influences of the modern world.

san blas adventures san blas islands

For centuries the Kuna battled against colonists trying to enslave them or stamp out their culture. This battle was finally won after the Kuna revolution of 1925 when they attacked Panamanian military stationed in Kuna Yala during the festivities of Carnaval. A panamanian retaliation was stopped by US warships with representatives from all over the world. A treaty was made and Kuna were given full rights to live in peace under their own laws in the Comarca of Kuna Yala.

The San Blas Archipelago, spreads along the northwest of the isthmus with more than 350 islands. These Panama Islands in the Caribbean, spread from Colon Province to Colombia in a long and narrow strip close to the continental area. The Region from the islands in the ocean to the mountains on the main land of Panama defines as San Blas or Guna Yala, the homeland of the Guna Natives. Gunas are well known for their clothing, bright and colorful fabric panels, which they manufacture using the technique of reverse application, to create their female dresses. They are politically a nation within Panama with their own language, culture, laws and territory. However, they are also Panamanians. There wasn´t a single road connecting Guna Yala with the rest of Panama (not until 2007). Gunas’ efforts to preserve their identity, and their control over San Blas has made it possible to keep this region as the pristine paradise it is today.

San Blas Islands Panama kayaking is a year-round activity. Take a vacation on Panamas Caribbean Islands, you have the choice of the San Blas Islands Panama and the Bocas del Toro Islands.During the Dry Season, from January through March, the North winds settles diminishing chances of sand flies and chances of rain. The water is cooler than the other months.Although it is good to snorkel it´s not the best time for it. Occasionally wind and waves might be tough for a less experienced paddler.  During the Rainy Season, from April-May through December there is rain, although it is very unusual to have rain that keeps us from paddling and snorkeling. The water is warmer and with greater visibility for snorkeling. We can expect days without waves at all. And yes, we might have to trust more in our insect repellent than the wind to take care of sand flies.
