11 best excursions + day trips in Lanzarote (our reviews)

By Claire ROBINSON , Region Lovers | November 18, 2023 | no intrusive ads, no sponsored content, just some affiliate links - if you use them, we get a small commission ( read more )

Visiting Lanzarote means discovering a variety of landscapes: volcanoes, caves, lagoons, cliffs, beaches… And you don’t always have to take your car. See our selection of the best excursions in Lanzarote to admire the different landscapes, have fun, go off-road or hop over to Fuerteventura. This guide also includes some of the best boat excursions in Lanzarote to discover the island from another point of view.

best lanzarote excursions

This opinion is completely independent , based on our experiences. We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.

Lanzarote’s most beautiful excursions – quick answers

If you don’t want to read everything, we recommend these 4 excursions to see the best of Lanzarote:

  • Admire the landscapes of Timanfaya National Park and a best-of of the island – see program and availability
  • Dolphin cruise – see our preferred option
  • Discover the works of César Manrique, including the caves – see program and availability
  • A day trip to the island of La Graciosa – see bus + ferry option

Most excursions can take you to the 3 main areas of Lanzarote: Playa Blanca, Playa del Carmen and Costa Teguise. But be sure to check first.

1. Excursion to Timanfaya only

Timanfaya National Park is the best excursion in Lanzarote. It’s absolutely breathtaking! It’s a national park and you can’t walk around on your own. But even in a group, it’s fantastic to see the colors and power of the Earth.

Lanzarote Excursions - TImanfaya Tour

Timanfaya National Park is located on the west coast of the island and consists entirely of volcanic soil. Access is limited, with just one road and a bus to take you out to see the scenery.

This route offers fantastic panoramas of the many volcanic craters (formed mainly between 1730 and 1736), different types of lava and incredible colors. It’s a much-visited attraction, but it’s well done and well worth the effort.

lanzarote day tour

If you don’t want to rent a car, there are excursions from all the resorts (Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise) and the cruise terminal.

  • A half-day which covers only the journey to Timanfaya, the fire experience at the restaurant and the park tour by bus – See program and availability

Tip: We recommend sitting on the right-hand side of the bus when taking the Timanfaya bus. There are beautiful things to see on both sides, but some of the best views will be to your right.

2. A little of everything in Lanzarote – day trip

You can also combine the park with other attractions over a full day. This way, you can discover more of Lanzarote’s beauty. We particularly like the option that adds the green lagoon, César Manrique’s Jameos del Agua cave and the Geria vineyard.

See program and availability

Here are the other locations in addition to Timanfaya:

Excursions in lanzarote - Green Lake

Here, at Charco de los Clicos , the combination is exceptional: a green lagoon, the remains of the volcano with red, yellow and black rocks, and the black sand beach. The volcanic crater was formed during eruptions in the 1730s and flooded by the ocean. With erosion, only half the cone remains.

Excursions in Lanzarote - Los Hervideros

Yes, there are vineyards on Lanzarote. It’s quite amazing, but by using picon on the soil to capture moisture and creating small rock walls to protect from the wind, they are able to grow grapes and make wine! You’ll visit the most famous bodega: La Geria, with its impressive valley.

lanzarote day tour

We think it was one of the most frustrating things about Lanzarote. This pool in Jameos des Agua is so inviting!!!! Isn’t it? Here, César Manrique transformed part of a long lava tunnel that had collapsed in several places. There’s an underground lake, restaurants and an amphitheatre…

3. Dolphin-watching boat trip

Dolphins off Lanzarote

We love the whale and dolphin watching tours. We had high hopes, and were lucky enough to see an impressive number of dolphins. A wonderful experience with the Lanzarote landscape in the background. You can also often see bottlenose dolphins in the Canary Islands, including Lanzarote. See our article .

Dolphins around Lanzarote

Choose from 4 tour formats:

Option 1 – Daytime speedboat – duration 1h30 with swimming See details and availability Option 2 – sunset speedboat – 2h30 with champagne See details and availability Option 3 – fast boat and Lobos Island – 5h with discovery of part of Lobos Island See details and availability Option 4 – Catamaran sunset cruise – 2h See details and availability There are resident dolphins all year round. Some say that June is the best month to see many of them, but we haven’t found confirmation.

4. Tour of César Manrique’s works

César Manrique left an indelible mark on Lanzarote thanks to his commitment to respecting the environment and integrating himself into it. His works on the island are surprising, combining the work of nature with discreet, curving architecture that blends with the rock.

César Manrique Foundation

It’s not possible to visit all the places linked to the artist in a single day. But you can discover some of it. We recommend this excursion: see program and availability .

It covers a good variety of locations:

  • Monumento al Campesino highlights local culture
  • The César Manrique Foundation
  • Mirador del Rio, hidden in the cliffs with breathtaking views

Cactus Garden

  • The Cactus Garden, a must-see
  • Jameos de Lagua, in a lava tube with lake and pool

OUR ADVICE FOR RENTING A CAR IN Lanzarote

  • Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
  • A small car is all you need.
  • But you can also choose a larger one if you wish, as the parking spaces are rather large.
  • There’s a lot of demand and it’s an island, so book early .

5. Excursion to the island of La Graciosa

La Graciosa is a small island to the north of Lanzarote. Access is by ferry and there are no roads at all, just tracks in the sand. You can explore it on foot or with one of the 4WD cabs. Unlike Lanzarote, it is covered in golden-white sand. But there are also a few volcanoes. The colors are magnificent and you can enjoy different landscapes: beaches, volcanoes and basalt columns. Even the ferry crossing is fascinating, with superb views of the Famara cliffs to the north of Lanzarote. See our article .

beach in La Graciosa

We recommend taking the first ferry in the morning to avoid the crowds who come to spend the day at the beach. Ferries depart from Orzola. Note that for those staying in Playa Blanca, it takes longer to get to the north (1h10min by car). 2 companies offer ferries from Lanzarote to La Graciosa. See departures and book or book with bus pick-up . And on site, we recommend hiring a 4WD cab to explore the island’s most beautiful landscapes: book your 4WD tour in advance!

Another option if you don’t rent a car is to take part in a day’s sailing on a catamaran around La Graciosa – see program .

arch in La Graciosa

6. Volcano hiking

The best way to discover Lanzarote’s volcanic landscapes is by hiking. The island offers a wide choice of hikes of varying lengths and difficulty. See our favorite hikes .

If you don’t want to hike alone, you can join a group. Here’s a small-group option around Timanfaya: see program and availability Or head north to the La Corona volcano and its impressive views: see program and availability .

7. Immerse yourself in the world of Lanzarote wine

If Lanzarote’s vineyards fascinate you, given the island’s extreme climatic conditions, you can combine a hike, a vineyard tour and a wine tasting! Find out more about Lanzarote wine in our article .

This tour takes you to La Géria bodega, the island’s most famous. You can hike in the valley surrounded by vineyards protected by low walls. The views are exceptional! And you can enjoy one of the island’s most famous white wines to reward yourself after the effort!

Vignobles La Géria

8. Alternative excursions

You can also go off the beaten track to discover Lanzarote’s volcanic landscapes from a different angle. Depending on your sporting or mechanical desires, you can go exploring:

  • by eBike – see program and availability
  • by buggy – see program and availability

buggy in Lanzarote

9. Excursion to Fuerteventura and the Corralejo dunes

Another classic is to set aside a day to discover the neighboring island of Fuerteventura. It’s so close and yet so different. The landscapes are more mountainous and less volcanic. It has better beaches but not the same charm as Lanzarote, in our opinion. The island is large, so you’ll only be able to discover the north. But you’ll spend some time in the sand dunes of Corralejo . And we love it! It’s an opportunity to discover another side of the Canary Islands.

Coralejo Dunes

10. Excursion to Fuerteventura and the island of Lobos

But if you want to keep with the volcanic theme, you can also book a fairly free excursion that takes you to spend some time on the beautiful little island of Lobos and also to the town of Corralejo on Fuerteventura. Lobos Island is one of our favorite spots in the Canaries. It’s like entering another world.

Lobos Island

11. Catamaran to Papagayo beaches

Lanzarote’s southwest coast is a must-see. Papagayo and its neighboring golden sandy beaches are considered to be the best on Lanzarote and are one of the island’s main attractions. Their vast sandy expanses have remained largely untouched, with no paved roads leading to them. These beaches are located on the Macizo de los Ajaches (Natural Monument), the island’s oldest territory, formed around 14 million years ago (hence the rounded peaks and deep ravines).

catamaran along the coast of Lanzaorte

You can explore it on foot, or via an unpaved track. Or you can take a boat out to sea and admire the wilderness. Just be aware that you won’t be able to get to the beaches from the boats.

Catamaran Papagayo

From Puerto del Carmen: Catamarans allow you to explore the entire south coast and perhaps catch a glimpse of dolphins. You can swim or kayak around the boat. See program and availability

From Playa Blanca: You’ll discover these magnificent landscapes on a yacht. You can swim and stand-up paddle around the boat. See program and availability

where to go lanzarote car trip

Self-drive day trips in Lanzarote

Lanzarote is an extraordinary island off the coast of Morocco. One of the Canary Islands archipelago that is part of Spain , Lanzarote covers approximately 850 square kilometers and lies less than 200 kilometers off the coast of Morocco. Formed by fiery volcanic activity, Lanzarote, with its countless volcanic cones, barren landscapes and ancient lava flows, is a wondrous place to visit. Aside from the otherworldly volcanic landscapes, you’ll find picturesque whitewashed villages, sandy beaches, vineyards and numerous miradors with breathtaking views. The best way to visit these places in Lanzarote is to hire a car and embark on a road trip to explore the island. I’ve created this guide to give you an idea of where to go and what to see in Lanzarote on easy road trips around the island.

Road trips in Lanzarote

This Lanzarote road trips guide contains links to three services I often use myself and can recommend: Booking.com (for hotel bookings), Rentalcars.com (for car hire) and GetYourGuide (for easy-to-book tours). If you make a booking via one of these services, I will receive a small commission (at no extra cost to you). These commissions help me to maintain my blog and share more travel experiences with you.

I’ve created three driving routes that cover the northern, central and southern areas of Lanzarote. For the purposes of this guide, each route starts and ends in Arrecife. On the map above, I’ve also marked my favourite beaches (yellow pins), the best places to visit in Lanzarote (purple pins) such as towns, viewpoints (miradors) and other attractions, and some of the Lanzarote wineries I’ve visited (blue pins). Each of these Lanzarote road trips can easily be done in a day.

car trips lanzarote spain

Driving in Lanzarote is easy – the roads are good and there’s little traffic – so you can literally explore the island at a relaxed pace. In addition, it makes economic sense to hire a car instead of paying separately for transportation to/from the airport and tours. Pay attention to the road signs, make sure you drive in the right lane, don’t drink and drive and you should be good.

Northern Lanzarote route: cacti, lave tubes and incredible views

Arrecife is the capital of Lanzarote. From its harbour, ferries connect Lanzarote with other Canary Islands as well as the European and African mainland. The old town, with its narrow streets, is a delight to explore. Another attraction is the 18th century Castillo de San Miguel (now an art museum).

arrecife-lanzarote-spain

Jardin de Cactus

From Arrecife, follow the LZ-18 road to Costa Teguise . There’s a variety of beaches (including the sandy Playa de las Cucharas), hotels, restaurants and shops. Search for hotels in Costa Teguise.

Continue to the Jardin de Cactus (Cactus Garden). Built in an old quarry, the Jardin de Cactus is a Cesar Manrique creation (more on him later). The garden, designed in the shape of an amphitheatre, houses more than 10,000 cacti from around the world as well as beautiful volcanic stone sculptures.

cactus-garden-lanzarote-photo

Jameos del Agua

From here, follow the LZ-1 road northwards to one of the coolest places in Lanzarote: Jameos del Agua . Along the way, make a stop at the natural rock pools in laidback Punta Mujeres . While you’re there, enjoy a drink and authentic tapas at the Pool Bar Pichon.

The Jameos del Agua , is for me, one of the island’s most fascinating attractions and a must see in Lanzarote. The Jameos is a striking combination of geology, architecture and design. The island’s most famous artist/architect, Cesar Manrique , built a visitor centre complete with a restaurant, bar, one of the most amazing auditoriums I’ve ever seen and a museum inside what used to be a gigantic lava tube. Visiting the Jameos del Agua is definitely one of the best things to do in Lanzarote !

best-places-lanzarote-jameos-del-agua

Get acquainted with the works of Cesar Manrique – as you explore Lanzarote, look out for more examples of his amazing creations.

lanzarote day tour

Across the LZ-1 road, you’ll find the wondrous Cueva de los Verdes , a 3,000-year-old lava tube. The tube extends for 6 kilometers above sea level and for another 1.5 kilometers below the sea (the world’s longest submarine lava tube). Join a tour to explore the cave and learn about the island’s geology.

Mirador del Rio

You can continue northwards along the coast on the LZ-1 or take the shortcut to the LZ-201 and continue to the next attraction: the Mirador del Rio . Another Cesar Manrique creation, this viewpoint, neatly blended into the cliff-face, offers breathtaking views of the imposing cliffs and of La Graciosa island across the strait.

best mirador lanzarote

From the mirador, return to the LZ-201 road and follow it southwards to Haria . Located in the Haria Valley or ‘Valley of a Thousand Palms’ (find out about the origins of this name in the town), this stunning whitewashed town contrasts sharply with the barren volcanic landscape. Stop for a stroll around this lovely town, have a drink at the main square (Plaza Leon y Castillo) and visit the quaint church at the plaza.

towns to visit in lanzarote

This is also popular area for hikers and there are various viewpoints in the surrounding mountains for spectacular views. The viewpoints accessible by car are Rincon de Haria and Valle de Malpaso .

lanzarote view

The last stop on this northern route is Teguise . The former capital of Lanzarote, Teguise is a quiet town that bursts to life on Sundays (9am – 2pm) when it hosts the largest market on the island. There’s lots of fresh produce, wines, arts and crafts. The wonderful atmosphere makes the market a great place to visit on Sunday mornings.

Central Lanzarote: the wild coast, Martian landscapes and unique vineyards

Caleta de famara.

From Arrecife, take the LZ-20 – LZ-30 and LZ-402 roads to Caleta de Famara . This windy beach, with its long arc of golden sand, is a popular destination for surfers and kitesurfers. Backed by imposing cliffs, it’s one of the most scenic beaches (in a wild sense) on Lanzarote.

lanzarote surf beach

Timanfaya National Park

Continue along the wild, windswept coast towards La Santa (another surf spot) before heading to the Timanfaya National Park . One of the most popular places to visit in Lanzarote, Timanfaya consists of 25(!) volcanoes and expansive lava fields. Drive up to the visitor centre and leave your car there to join a bus tour of the park (the entrance ticket to the park includes parking and the bus tour).

places to visit lanzarote road trip

It’s a surreal experience touring the park. As you pass volcanic cones in a multitude of colours, old lava flows and intriguing rock formations, you might think you’d just landed on Mars! Back at the visitor centre, watch the guide ‘create’ a geyser and other cool stunts. You can also opt to go on a 4-hour guided hike through the park (advance bookings required).

lanzarote bus tour timanfaya

From the national park, continue to Uga and further to La Geria (on the LZ-30 road). Located on the edges of the Timanfaya National Park, La Geria is the premier wine-producing region in Lanzarote. What makes it especially intriguing is its black, ashy landscape and horseshoe-shaped walls which protect the vines.

wine region lanzarote

There are various bodegas (wineries) worth stopping at for a tour and/or wine-tasting. I can recommend Bodega La Geria and Bodega Rubicón . I also enjoyed the wine-tasting/tapas experience at La Bodeguita del Tablero . Don’t miss the local favourite, Malvasia, or the Moscatel varieties. If you’d like to learn more about the history of wine-making in Lanzarote, continue along the LZ-30 to El Grifo , a bodega with an interesting museum.

lanzarote wineries

Southern Lanzarote: a green lagoon, salt flats and beaches

From Arrecife, follow the LZ-2 road to Charco de los Clicos . Also known as El Golfo, this green lagoon is a fascinating place to visit. The unusual colour of the lagoon is created by a type of algae found in the water. Backed by the eroded walls of a crater and contrasting sharply with the black beach, El Golfo is certainly an incredible sight.

lanzarote attraction el golfo

Los Hervideros

From here, continue to Los Hervideros , further down the coast. This viewpoint is a popular place to visit due to its breathtaking views of the rugged coastline. Spend some time here to enjoy the sights and sounds of huge waves crashing into the volcanic cliffs and caves. There’s a trail here which leads to other viewpoints and a lava field.

lanzarote day tour

Salinas de Janubio

Head further south towards Salinas de Janubio , a patchwork of colourful salt flats. It’s a great photo stop and there’s also a shop which sells different types of salt.

lanzarote day trips

The beaches

After all that driving, it’s time for the beach! Some of Lanzarote’s best beaches are found in this area. From Salinas de Janubio, follow the LZ-2 to Playa Blanca . This bustling beach community offers many accommodation options and a plethora of restaurants, bars, cafés and shops. Search for hotels in Playa Blanca.

lanzarote day tour

For something more secluded, head for the beaches of the nearby Costa de Papagayo . It costs a few euros to enter the park but once inside, you have a choice of five beautiful beaches! Playa Papagayo is the most famous (and crowded) of the lot. My favourite is Playa Mujeres.

Hi Freddie & Penelope, Wow, thanks so much for coming back to my blog to leave this wonderful comment! It’s always great to hear when a reader follows my tips/advice and has a terrific time. Your comment sure made my day! 🙂 I’m sorry to hear about that lousy restaurant experience though. I looked it up on Google Maps and it seems like you weren’t the only ones who had a less-than-satisfactory experience there. 🙁 Once again, a big thank you for your comment and I hope you’ll refer to my blog again for future holidays.

Cheers, Keith

Hello there, My husband and I came to Lanzarote for a weeks holiday. We booked a villa and a car for our stay so found your self-drive guide to Lanzarote amazing, all your recommendations were spot on. However, everyone else obviously also saw your post as when we went to the pool bar at Punta de Mujeres today (Thursday) we were told that they are fully booked till Monday!!! We were very disappointed, but we were also hungry so we looked on Google maps and found Restaurante Sol y Luna just a 5minute walk away, OMG please DO NOT go there no matter how hungry you are, it was terrible from start to finish! The waiters were grumpy, the fish soup was look warm and chewy, the fish of the day was dry and tasteless, the longoustines were very over cooked and dry and they didn’t bring our drinks. Thank you so much for your fantastically laid out three day drive around Lanzarote we have thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated all your effort laying this out for others to benefit from! 😊 Freddie and Penelope from Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

You’ll need to purchase a ticket to enter the Timanfaya park at Taro de Entrada on the LZ-67 road. This ticket includes entrance fees, parking and the bus tour. The bus tours leave every hour I believe. More info here .

Great guide – is it necessary to reserve the bus tour in Timanfaya and if yes, where can we do that ? thanks !!

Fantastic images! Lanzarote’s wide open spaces, natural places, and breathtaking ocean vistas are among my favorites. We can’t wait to start planning our trip.

10 Exciting Things To Do in Lanzarote (Plus Where To Stay & What To Eat)

L anzarote is one of the Canary Islands , an archipelago of volcanic islands which belongs to Spain and located about 60 miles off the coast of Morocco. They are very diverse due to the different altitudes of the volcanoes.

La Palma, for example, is very lush and green, whereas Lanzarote is a desert island. But despite the lack of vegetation, Lanzarote is a fascinating place to visit, and you’ll find plenty of fun and exciting things to do in Lanzarote!

In 2016, my husband, Baxter the dog, and I sailed to the Canary Islands. We were planning to use this as our jump off point to do yet another Atlantic crossing. However, this was the year when nothing went as planned, and instead of hopping over to the Caribbean in a timely manner, I spent about six months on Lanzarote.

The Absolute Must-Do Activities

If you can do everything on this list, do it. But if you’re time is limited, these are my Lanzarote faves:

  • Visit the geological wonders at Timanfaya National Park
  • Learn about César Manrique while exploring the Cactus Garden
  • Relax out at the beach at  Playa del Charco de los Clicos

10 Exciting Things To Do in Lanzarote

There are lots of wonderful things to do on Lanzarote, Spain , but you may be wondering how to get around the island. There are several options. If you mostly want to do R&R, you could book the occasional tour. If you prefer independent exploring, you can either rent a car, or use public transportation.

Driving is super easy on the island, and the rental cars are reasonably priced, making this the most effective means of transportation and use of your time. Buses run from town to town and to the airports, but they aren’t a great means to get to more remote or rural areas.

Uber and taxis are available as well. Once you have chosen how to get around this small island, you are ready to see all the sights!

1. Timanfaya National Park

To witness volcanic activity firsthand, you need to visit Timanfaya National Park, which is also one of Lanzarote’s main attractions and a great place to start your excursions. Timanfaya is one of Spain’s 15 national parks, and the only one which is entirely geological in nature. It’s a fascinating place to see.

The drawback is that you aren’t allowed to explore it on your own. (But don’t be deterred, the natural park makes up for this!) The only way to see the park is by bus. The bus tour, which takes around 30 minutes to complete, is included in your entrance fee and starts at the visitor center. This fee is 12 Euros for adults, 6 Euros for kids between seven and 12, and free for children younger than seven years.

Right in front of the visitor center you will be able to see a demonstration of the thermal energy. There’s a hole into which a park employee throws water, which then comes back up as a steaming fountain. It’s quite impressive to see mother earth’s power at work like this!

Free guided walking tours are available on the Termesana Route.  Reservations must be made  ahead of time. You will notice offers for camel riding tours in many places around Lanzarote. There are varying reports of the treatment of the animals. If in doubt, please skip this kind of tour and only practice  ethical animal tourism .

You can also book a longer guided tour of Timanfaya National Park that includes hotel pickup, the Route of the volcanic landscapes, the wine region of La Geria and beautiful viewpoints such as the cliffs of Los Hervideros and the El Golfo volcano.

2. Los Volcanes Natural Park

At Los Volcanes Natural Park, you are free to roam on your own, wandering the lava fields which date back as far as 1730. This nature reserve surrounds the national park, so you can expect a lot of similar features – and the true feeling of walking on the moon !

Bring your binoculars, as this is one of the best places to spot birds as it is a special bird protection area. Geo-geeks should consider booking a tour. The island has great guides that offer small group tours who can give you all the insights on volcanoes and the history of the island. It’s so fascinating, it’s even fun for those who are only mildly interested!

3. The Cactus Garden

Before you visit the Jardin de Cactus , you need to learn about César Manrique, Lanzarote’s most famous son. He was an artist and sculptor, as well as a nature activist. He’s responsible for several projects on the island.

One example is the Devil sculpture at Timanfaya, a sculpture which has it’s origin in an old legend, but has come to life through César Manrique’s hands and can now be found on t-shirts, key chains, and postcards all over Lanzarote.

One of his ideas gives Lanzarote its distinct character even today. Manrique deemed that buildings should be white, the window sills should be either green or blue, and the height should never exceed four stories.

The Jardín de Cactus is the last project Manrique completed before his death in 1992, and it’s one you should not miss. The garden is beautifully designed and is home to around 4,500 cacti belonging to about 500 species which come from five different continents.

It’s not just a fun place to wander around and expand your knowledge about cacti, it also provides great opportunities to take all the Insta-worthy shots you need. It’s considered among the most important cactus gardens in the world!

4. Cueva De Los Verdes

These lava tunnels are a must see, and a tour will leave you in awe of our planet’s power. They are about five miles long, and even those who are claustrophobic may give this activity a chance.

With a height of up to 164 feet and width of up to 50 feet, you’ll feel more as if you have landed in an underground cathedral than a deep dark tunnel. Learn about how the tunnels came to be, and what history is attached to them, on a guided tour .

5. Jameos Del Agua

César Manrique’s footprint can also be seen at Jameos Del Agua . It’s a natural space inside a volcanic lava tunnel. There are three parts/openings at Jameos Del Agua: at Jameo Grande you’ll find a beautiful swimming pool (no swimming allowed though), at Jameo Chico you’ll find a restaurant, access to the interior, and a hidden entrance to the longest submerged lava tube cave in the world, the Tunnel of La Atlántida, and then there’s also the Jameo de la Cazuela.

The Jameos del Agua are deemed an art, culture, and tourism center, with a museum, an auditorium which is located partly inside a lava tube, and the aforementioned restaurant.

It’s a very neat place to visit, and it’s also home to the unique blind crab.

6. Go On A Wine Tour At La Geria

A desert island is the least likely wine country you will ever encounter. The plants are cultivates in funnel-shaped hollows in the grounds (gerias, from which the region derives its name), and ingenious way to protect the crop from the constant winds.

Some of the island’s wineries produce award-winning wines, but even if you don’t like wine, it’s well worth the tour just to learn about the clever cultivation methods.  Join a tour  to visit several wineries and enjoy a wine tasting.

7. Visit A Local Market

Local markets are the best place to buy your souvenirs. One of my favorite things to do in Lanzarote is to visit Marina Rubicón. They are every Wednesday and Saturday between 9 am and 2 pm and the best place to buy some art, crafts, pottery, buy local wine, or get the souvenir t-shirt you’ve wanted to buy all along, in a fun atmosphere with great views of the boats in the marina.

And since we are on the topic of shopping: there is no VAT in Lanzarote. VAT is value added tax, the European version of sales tax. In the bigger stores, especially in Arecife, the capital city, you’ll find the usual candidates for duty free shopping: alcohol, tobacco, and perfume/cosmetics.

But if you want to buy something more unique, opt for a piece of art, something made with aloe grown on the island, island wine, or even wine soap, or jewelry made with volcanic rocks. If you love to travel from your kitchen, buy mojo sauces so you can recreate one of Lanzarote’s specialties: papas arrugás.

9. Ride A Submarine

As in many beach destinations, you will find the normal marine tours on offer: a catamaran cruise to a fab beach, a day sail, scuba diving, and surfing lessons.

But Lanzarote has something super unique to offer: a  submarine safari ! The submarine dives up to 100 feet down, you get to see a shipwreck, and enjoy the marine life along the way. Where else can you have that kind of experience!

10. Hit The Beach

When on an island, a trip to the beach is a must. If you plan a summer trip, sunbathing and a nice swim should be on the agenda. During the winter, you can enjoy a leisurely walk or book a horseback riding tour and enjoy the scenery.

These are my favorite beaches in Lanzarote:

  • Playa de Papagayo : not just one, but a series of five stunning golden sand beaches, protected by a series of coves, best for swimming or snorkeling
  • Playa de Famara : expect stunning scenery on this wide open stretch of sand. The often strong winds are ideal for surfing or kiteboarding.
  • Playa Flamingo : the most family-friendly beach. The waters are calm, palm trees provide some shade, and bars and restaurants offer tasty food.
  • Playa Chica : a small beach that is ideal for diving.
  • Playa del Charco de los Clicos : one of the best beaches for a stroll and photography. Admire the black sand, volcanic features, and green lagoon
  • Quemada Beach: gorgeous black sand beach, best for a stroll due to it being mostly rocks

My 5 Favorite Places To Eat in Lanzarote

Potato lovers rejoice! Wrinkly potatoes (papas arrugás) are one of Lanzarote’s national dishes, and they are delicious! They are served with mojo picón, which is either red or green.

The red version is made with red bell peppers, spices, and red wine vinegar and is a wee bit spicy. Mojo verde, the green version, is made of olive oil, vinegar, garlic, cilantro, and cumin. My favorite? I love them both!

Lanzarote’s location in the Atlantic Ocean lends itself to excellent seafood dishes as well. You can also find excellent tapas, or BBQ cooked with the aforementioned heat from volcanic rock.

Here are my favorite restaurants and the places you should not miss during your stay in Lanzarote:

  • Azure Restaurant , Puerto Calero: ribs with meat that falls right off the bone, super friendly staff, and marina views await at Azure! Vegetarian options are also available.
  • Coentro , Puerto Calero: Innovative food earned owner and chef João Faraca the title of best chef in the Canary Islands in 2018. Adventurous foodies can enjoy cold tomato soup with goat cheese ice cream, local white fish tempura with jable sweet potato foam, and much more.
  • Restaurante El Diablo , Timanfaya National Park: eat food cooked on the heat generated by an active volcano, a one of a kind experience! The menu features traditional Canary Island dishes. Vegetarian options are available.
  • Mar Azul Restaurante Grill , Costa Teguise: Looking for delicious yet affordable tapas? Mar Azul is the place to go!
  • Restaurante Lilium , Arrecife: a small restaurant with huge flavors. Traditional Canarian cuisine with a twist and a Michelin star!
