Horseback Riding in Peru

Sacred valley of the incas ride.

Sacred Valley of the Incas- visit the legendary Machu Picchu following your riding tour in Peru

Photo Journey:

Sacred Valley of the Incas- see spectacular landscape while horseback riding in Peru

The Sacred Valley of the Incas horseback riding vacation in Peru gives a unique introduction to South America’s most impressive Pre-Columbian civilization on some of the world’s most smoothly gaited horses which almost seem to float as they glide effortlessly along on ancient trails.  The scenery of Andean Peru is beyond description and the mountains around rise to incredible heights.  As you experience horseback riding in Peru you will love these beautiful, intelligent horses as they allow you to cover the miles effortlessly with no need for a rising trot or a two point canter.  The shops in Cuzco offer a display of local arts and crafts like alpaca wool sweaters at prices which are hard to resist.  You will see fascinating ancient experimental agricultural stations with terraced plots at different altitudes where the Incas tested and developed new strains of maize and potatoes.

As you continue your Peruvian riding tour, you will cross the swiftly flowing Urubamba River and pass terraced fields, constructed over the millennia with enormous effort, hanging to the sides of mountains where vegetables are grown.  Then you climb higher into mountain pastures where smiling Quechua speaking children tend flocks of goats and sheep.  Nights are spent in comfortable hotels chosen for their picturesque locations and attractive colonial architecture. Everywhere the food is excellent with varied fresh produce readily available.  At the end of the trip you will visit the amazing lost city of Machu Picchu which was not destroyed by the Spaniards as a result of its isolated and at the time unknown location, and certainly has to rank very high in the list of the world’s ancient wonders.  The blend of native Peruvian and Spanish cuisine is delicious.  This trip will open your eyes to the high level of culture achieved in the Americas before the Europeans arrived and is an adventure you will not soon forget.

Trip Itinerary

Upon arrival at the Cusco airport the outfitter’s representative will welcome you to Cusco (he or she will have a sign with your name on it) and ensure that you have a safe transfer to your comfortable hotel near the center of this historical and beautiful city.

Today it is very important that you relax, rest and get acclimatized to the high altitude, before the start of your exciting riding expedition high in the Andes. Reservations have been made for you at the wonderful Hotel Costa del Sol, a 4-star establishment with rooms in the colonial part of the building, and only 2 blocks from the famous Plaza de Armas. The earliest check-in at the hotel is 11 AM. Should you arrive in the early morning a dayroom may be necessary (an out of pocket expense).

Please make sure that you rest well, because tomorrow you will meet and ride the Peruvian Paso horses and learn all about the classic Peruvian riding style. Lunch and dinner are on your own tonight.

After a delicious breakfast you will be picked up at 9.15AM outside your hotel. From Cusco it is a 1.25 hrs drive to your accommodation in the Sacred Valley. For the next four nights you will be staying in comfortable rooms at the Hotel Sonesta Posada del Inca, in the heart of the Sacred Valley of the Incas; just a short drive from the stables. Once you have unpacked and refreshed yourself, you will be collected and transferred to the ranch. Today you will have an opportunity to become familiar with the beautiful Peruvian Paso horses and the traditional Peruvian riding gear.

Enjoy a delicious barbeque lunch at the ranch, some good wine and of course Maria’s famous Pisco Sours. In the afternoon, there will be a demonstration of classic Peruvian equitation, followed by an introductory Peruvian riding lesson, during which your riding ability will be evaluated. We will then match you with a mount in accordance with your riding ability, preference, personality and weight class. All horses are forward going, very well trained and a pleasure to ride. Dinner will either be at the ranch or at a local restaurant.

After a hearty breakfast at your hotel, you will be picked up at 9.15AM. Today’s ride takes you along an old and forgotten path not far behind the ranch that leads to a breathtaking place on top of the Cordillera Vilcanota. Enjoy this trail off the beaten path. The first part of the trail will be a serious climb following narrow but beautiful mountain trails with lot of vegetation. You can observe the rich flora of the Peruvian Andes, such as the Molle Tree “Pepper Tree” which the Incas used to embalm mummies with, the Sauco tree which produces a small but very tasty purplish-black fruit, the Capuli fruit tree (its fruit is almost the size of a cherry and its color when ripe), the Quena tree ( the trunk is twisted and the reddish bark flakes and peels like paper), the Tamarilla tree (tree tomato), Cantutas (the flower of the Inca), Aguaymanto (Peruvian cherry or cape gooseberry, Muna (a mint like Peruvia herb) and many other botanical specimens native to the area.

Around mid-day, we arrive at a lush valley called ‘Pumahuanca’ where Maria and our staff will be waiting to surprise you with a delicious lunch of fresh trout and some refreshing drinks before heading back to the ranch arriving at around 4 PM. An easy day in the saddle to get to know your horse, experience it’s exquisite and smooth lateral get and acclimatize to the altitude. Dinner as the previous night. Riding time: approx. 4 hours. Altitude 2,800 m/ 9,190 ft.

After a hearty breakfast at your hotel you will be taken to the ranch where you will set off on the ride. Cross the Urubamba River and pass Pichingote, an old Andean village where the houses are partially built into caves, and Salinas, the salt pans from Inca times, which are still being used by the locals to extract the salt from mountain spring water. The salt pans consist of a series of platforms where the salty water is channeled through an impressive irrigation system and left to evaporate in the sun. After lunch you will climb with the horses (almost 850 meters / 2,790 ft) to the alti-plano of the Andes. This climb takes about two hours, and will be at an easy pace because the change of altitude does not only affect the horses. At 3,550 meter (11,400 ft) you will be impressed by the stunning scenery and the snow-capped mountains of Chicon, Veronica and Pitasuray. Continue your ride to Maras, a typical Andean village with a beautiful 400-yr-old colonial church for a picnic lunch. The church at Maras was built just after the Conquest and is one of the ten oldest churches in South America. From Maras follow primitive trails across the altiplano to visit the ruins of Cheqoq. Here the Incas constructed fascinating cold-storage depots to conserve the agricultural products of the region. The cooling of the products was achieved through a system of wind tunnels to circulate the cold air coming from the glaciers and a network of water channels to circulate the cold water from a nearby mountain spring. Continue riding until approximately 4:30 pm. The horses will stay with the grooms at a campsite, and you return to your hotel by private car. After some rest and a hot shower, we will take you for dinner at one of Urubamba’s local restaurants or the ranch. Overnight at the Hotel Sonesta Posada del Inca in the Sacred Valley. Riding time: 4 to 4,5 hours. Altitude: 2,800 – 3,550 m/9,190 – 11,650 ft.

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel and be ready at 9.15 AM for the transfer back to where the horses spent the night. Follow primitive trails across the altiplano. The scenery is spectacular with snowcapped mountains, wildflowers and beautiful mountain lakes. You may meet smiling Quechua children with their herds of sheep or cattle and see Campesinos ploughing their fields in the traditional way – oxen hitched to a wooden plow. Maybe you will even share a Chicha (their traditional maize drink) with them. Follow the trail to Chinchero where a picnic lunch is awaiting you. On a clear day the views from Chinchero are tremendous; to the west and northwest stretches a vista of rolling alti-plano, ringed in the distance by the dramatic snowcaps of the Cordilleras Vilcabamba and Urubamba. After lunch continue to Lake Piuray. From here ride in the direction of Cusco and pass small villages. At one of the villages you stop and leave the horses with the grooms. If time allows visit Chinchero (if not, this visit will be scheduled the morning of Day 8) and possible a textile workshop where you will see an impressive demonstration of ancient techniques of spinning, dying and weaving. The beautiful fabrics are still made in the way as they would have been in Inca times. Bring some money as you may want to buy some souvenirs, although don’t feel obligated to buy anything. Transfer to the historical city of Cusco, the oldest continuously inhabited city in South America and former capital of the great Inca Empire. For the next two nights you stay in a very comfortable hotel in the heart of Cusco’s archaeological center. Enjoy dinner in Cusco (an out of pocket expense) – your guide can recommend a restaurant for you. Riding time: 4 to 5 hours. Altitude: 3,550-3,800 m / 11,650-12,470 ft.

Today is free to do as you wish. You can visit the numerous churches, cathedrals and museums, do some shopping, or just relax. Some may opt for a one-day rafting adventure on the Urubamba River. The evenings in Cusco are full of exciting nightlife. According to Inca legend, Cusco was founded around 1200 AD by Manco Capac and Mama Occlo. Manco Capac selected the site when the golden staff given to him by his father, the sun, sank into the earth and disappeared. Each Incan emperor built his own palace and compound during his reign. The Spanish initially tried to destroy the Inca buildings but soon realized that because of their quality construction, it was easier to reuse the foundations for their own buildings. Throughout Cusco many of the original Inca walls can still be seen today. Cusco is a vibrant city and the vast majority of inhabitants are native Quechua Indians. Despite being a major tourist destination, both for its own treasures and as a staging point for the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu, Cusco has managed to hold on to its own distinct flavor. It retains a natural charm that is irresistible. Overnight in Cusco. Lunch and dinner are an out of pocket expense.

After breakfast, the riding expedition continues.

Pick up is at 9.15 AM from your hotel in the Sacred Valley and the horses are waiting where you left them on. Today’s ride will take you to incredible landscapes (and the highest point of the ride) with spectacular views. Dress warm today because at these elevations the weather can be more harsh and unpredictable. Ascend a steep and narrow valley to reach a pass at 4,150 m (13,600ft), and enjoy the view of Lake Q’oricocha. Many herds of Llamas, and Alpacas can be seen around here grazing among the farmland. The people living at this high altitude are friendly, hardworking farmers who grow mainly potatoes. After we explore the area around the lake, we ride eastward to a small lake called Quellacocha where we meet our back up team and stop for a delicious lunch. After lunch the ride heads northeast in the direction of the Sacred Valley. Descend from the altiplano into the valley of Umaspampa on a zig-zag trail for about two hours. Close to the village of Umasbamba leave the horses in the caring hands of the grooms and transfer back to your hotel in the Sacred Valley and dinner at a local restaurant or at the ranch. Riding time: 5 to 6 hours. Altitude: between 3,800 – 4,290 m / 12,470 – 14,000 ft.

Today is another stunningly scenic day and you will have plenty of breaks and photo-stops. From the village of Umaspampa ride to the villages of Cuper Alto and Cuper Bajo, arriving in the early afternoon at an abandoned church near the village of Chinchero where you have lunch. Much of the riding today is along trails that are part of the great Incan Empire’s road system, the Capac Ñan. The Incan road network was one the greatest engineering feats ever undertaken in the New World, rivaling the Roman road system in the Old World. The 25,000 km network linked Cusco, the Inca capital, to the empire’s far-flung domains. The road system reached almost all of the Andean territories, including Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Argentina and Chile and was formed by four clearly recognizable main roads, and many secondary roads. After lunch ride to a small village not far from Maras where the horses will stay with the grooms for the night. Transfer to your hotel in the Sacred Valley before dining at the hotel’s restaurant and overnight at the comfortable Hotel Posada del Inca. Riding time: approx. 5-6 hours. Altitude: 3,800 – 3,550 m/12,470 – 11,650 ft.

After breakfast get ready for your last riding day. Before you meet the horses at Huaynacolca stop at the pottery shop of the ceramic artist Pablo Seminario. He is a local legend amongst Cusquenos as he invented a new form of ceramic artwork which integrates abstract modern styles with tranditional Incan and pre-Incan ceramic techniques and designs. After the short visit to the shop drive back to where the horses spent the night and continue the ride along the old Inca road high above the Sacred Valley. Pass farmland and the small village of Santana before returning to the village of Maras. Arrive at a beautiful courtyard of an old house for lunch where the back up team will be waiting with drinks as well. After a delicious lunch follow a trail with great views of the Urquillos Valley, arriving once more at the village of Maras. From there continue the descent into the Sacred Valley, arriving at the ranch around 4 PM. Celebrate your return with a traditional Pisco Sour. Riding time: 4 hours. Altitude: 2,800 – 2,600 m / 9,190 – 8,530 ft. Dinner at the ranch or at a local restaurant.

Tour Details

Horseback Adventure Full Day: The horseback riding adventure is the best way to see the Sacred Valley and some of the archaeological sites around the area. If you like being out and away from everyone you will love this tour. The horses we use are some of the best in the area. This ride is great for a beginner. It is not a typical slow and boring horse ride, neither for the horseman nor for beginners. I am a horseman myself and in my opinion this is some of the best rides in Cusco. I have been on many trails in Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico and many other states in the US, and this ride is right up with the best. You will get to see a part of the area many tourists don’t see. Full Day Cusco - Sacred Valley - Cusco

Early in the morning at your hotel, you will be given an explanation of the tour together with a program, contract, and conditions of service. We will load up in our provided transportation and head to the town of Maras. We will pass through spectacular and beautiful landscapes.

Before the trip begins, we will give an introduction to the world of horsemanship and the characteristics of the Peruvian Paso horse. A period of familiarization with the horses will follow along with a demonstration of how to handle the Peruvian Paso horse.

Our horseback ride begins at the branch of Maras Tiobamba Temple from where a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire Cordillera Urubamba valley can be enjoyed. We head to the town of Maras, located at 3465m above sea level and 46 km from the city of Cusco. Maras is famous for its salt mines and ancient method of obtaining it, as well as its colonial doorways. While riding you will see impressive panoramic views of the Cordillera Urubamba and the snow-capped mountains of El Chicon, Veronica and Puma Huanca, which rise along the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

We continue our journey through beautiful landscapes surrounded by mountains and is marked by the agriculture and livestock of local farmers. After an hour and a half riding, at this point we have traveled 7 km to the southwest; we arrive at the archaeological site of Moray at 3385m. It is also known for being the agricultural “laboratory” for the Incas, because of their method of adapting the different seeds to the local soil and harvesting. It is also well known of the archaeological remains in the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

After visiting Moray, we get back on our horses and head to our own little place for lunch, a quiet and relaxing spot, in natural surroundings, away from the bustle of tourists, where we will have beautiful views of the mountains and glaciers of Chicon, Puma Huanca, Sahuasira and Pitusiray. After our lunch we will head through the town of Maras. After the visit to Maras, we’ll continue for an hour and a half, to the salt mines, passing through and enjoying its spectacular scenery.

Maras is located with an altitude of 3500m. It covers a large area on the slopes of the hills and consists of about 3000 natural pools of salt water, about 5 square meters each, where salt is extracted for human consumption. After the visit to the salt mines, we will continue our journey towards Pichingoto, a community nestled in the Sacred Valley at the base of the mountain Qoriq’aqya, along the Urubamba River. It is a Quechua community dedicated mainly to agriculture.

We will have the opportunity to see caves where old settlers lived and stored their crops. Some caves are on high levels of the mountain and ropes and ladders had been used to reach them. After the visit to the village of Pichingoto Vilcanota we cross the river to reach the road leading from Urubamba to Ollantaytambo. From there, we have the choice of taking the transport to the city of Cusco or to the town of Ollantaytambo.

With towering snow-capped peaks, lush alpine valleys, Amazonian jungle, and a pristine coastline, it is no wonder that Peru continues to draw adventure travelers from across the globe. Thrill seekers and outdoors enthusiasts flock to this South American nation for its wealth of adventure pursuits, from trekking and rock climbing to whitewater rafting and surfing. While the options are endless, one of the top spots for Peru travel is the ancient Inca city of Machu Picchu, located in the Andes Mountains above the spectacular Urubamba Valley.

Peru’s Machu Picchu region is a must-see for any adventurer for its natural beauty, rich ancient history, and vibrant culture. While most active travelers to this area choose to hike the Inca Trail from Cuzco to Machu Picchu, another adventurous way to explore this Peruvian region is a horseback riding vacation to this enchanting part of the Andes. Equestrian tours provide opportunities to explore the breathtaking terrain along paths carved out by the ancient Incas in a new and exciting manner.

Many operators running equestrian vacations in Peru use Peruvian Paso horses, specially bred for the Andes terrain. The Peruvian Paso, or Peruvian Horse, is known for its smooth ride and named for its four-beat lateral gait, called the “paso llano.” Descended from the horses of the Spanish Conquistadors, this breed of royal origin is also noted for its gentle nature, making it the perfect companion for a Peru adventure tour.

Similar to hiking and trekking adventures in the spectacular Machu Picchu region, equestrian tours also offer riders the chance to explore the natural wonders and ancient ruins of this stunning landscape, while staying in premier accommodations. These lodge-to-lodge horseback riding options are a great way to explore the wonders of this terrain – from the Salkantay peak, the second most sacred point in Inca mythology after Machu Picchu, to the Humantay Lake, a scenic body of water fed by glaciers on the slopes above.

After exploring these mesmerizing sites by day, lodge-to-lodge riders stay at one of the premier resorts in the region, such as Mountain Lodges of Peru’s Salkantay Lodge and Adventure Resort at Soraypampa. MLP, an award-winning Peru tour company, also offers equestrian vacations from its Vinak-Reichraming Lodge, nestled in Peru’s Sierra region. Horseback riding tour participants can take advantage of the lodges’ delicious cuisine, plush accommodations, first-class service, and premier horses and riding options. Travelers can also choose to combine a horseback riding excursion with a number of other activities, including hiking, cultural tours, and fishing, among others.

For a one-of-a-kind adventure tour to Machu Picchu, try a horseback riding vacation to experience the rich history, stunning vistas, and enchanting culture of this spectacular Peruvian region.

Machu Picchu Tours & Treks

Clouds rising above the mountains behind. the ruins of Machu Picchu, in Peru

As the mist lifts off the mountains and over the Inca ruins, Machu Picchu evokes an otherworldly feeling

It’s one of the world’s most incredible archaeological sites, with a breathtaking location to match. With all that Machu Picchu has to offer, it’s easy to understand why so many are drawn to the visitor heartland of Peru . The ultimate decision is how to get there. Choose a trek or take the train? You could hike through cloud forests along the classic Inca Trail, fulfill your Andes experience on the Quarry Trail or challenge yourself on the Choquequirao trek – it's up to you. We don’t need to tell you why the adventure is worth your while. Our local leaders will keep you safe, informed and inspired every step of the way.

Our Machu Picchu trips

Let's create an exclusive trip for your group.

Machu Picchu highlights

Which route is right for you.

With its spectacular natural scenery and profound cultural encounters, the Inca Trail is an international beacon for trekking. Attracting thousands of hikers each year, it's a challenging yet rewarding hike that stays with you for a lifetime. Although rated moderate, the relentless uphill (and downhill) hiking is tough - the fitter you are, the more you’ll enjoy it.

For an impressive hike off the beaten path, consider the Inca Quarry Trail. This lesser-known trek offers the same magical scenery of the Andes mountains, passing through local villages and visiting three smaller archaeological sites the other trails don’t. Another bonus is that the hike doesn’t require a permit – so once you book, you’re set.

Take your boots further with a challenging eight-day hike moving through high-altitude cloud forests, over mega mountain passes and along an ancient trail leading to the well-preserved Inca city ruins of Choquequirao. This trail might be secluded and not for the faint-hearted but it's also one adventure you'll never forget, and that's a promise.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

What is Machu Picchu?

Machu Picchu is a magnificent reminder of the power and ingenuity of the Inca civilization.

The ancient citadel, built in the 15th century, was abandoned only 100 years later, and many mysteries remain.

Listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site in 1983 and announced as one of the Seven Wonders of the World in 2007, Machu Picchu makes a lasting impression.

Where is Machu Picchu?

Overlooking the Urubamba River, the site of Machu Picchu sits above the Sacred Valley – located in the Cusco region of Peru.

How can I get to Machu Picchu?

Many travellers fly into the capital of Cusco before taking the train or choosing a hiking tour. The stepping stone to Machu Picchu is Ollantaytambo, about 1.5 hours away from Cusco by bus.

From Ollantaytambo, the most common ways to get to Machu Picchu are:

  • Hiking the Inca Trail (one way to Machu Picchu)
  • Taking the equally scenic and rewarding Quarry Trail
  • Trekking the challenging 8-day Choquequirao Trail

Can I still hike if I take the train?

So, you want to experience the Inca Trail but aren't quite up for the entire hike?

The one-day option takes you by train part of the way where you hop off and trek the trade highway of the ancient Inca empire.

You will arrive at the Sun Gate in the afternoon to take in the views of Machu Picchu.

Is hiking the only way to get to Machu Picchu?

On all of our trips that visit Machu Picchu, you can choose the rail journey instead of the hike – simply specify while booking that you’d prefer the train option. There's no extra cost for this, though please note fees may apply if you decide to change to the train option after your Inca Trail permit has already been purchased.

Learn more about taking the train to Machu Picchu

When is the best time to visit Machu Picchu?

You can visit Machu Picchu all year round.  The most popular time, and therefore the most crowded, is in June and July.

Low cloud cover during the dry season from April to October also means cold nights on hiking trails, so you'll need thermals for a good night’s sleep.

The wet season is from November to March. Temperatures rise and the region receives heavy rainfall, so waterproofs are essential if you're hiking. If you don't mind a bit of rain, the plus side is that crowds are smaller. If you want to hike the Inca Trail, note that it closes every year in February for maintenance.

Can you get to Machu Picchu in a day?

Yes, you can. Starting with an early rise in the morning, take a 1.5-hour bus ride to Ollantaytambo, then a 2.5-hour train to Aguas Calientes, followed by a 30-minute bus to Machu Picchu.

You will have a couple of hours to visit Machu Picchu and then return to Cusco the same way.

None of our trips visit Machu Picchu this way, as we believe it doesn’t allow enough time to explore (and really enjoy) the site and the Sacred Valley area.

How high is Machu Picchu?

Machu Picchu is found deep in the cloud forest at 2440 m (7972 ft) above sea level, sitting at 1000 m (3280 ft) lower than Cusco.

What does this mean for you? In terms of altitude, you're unlikely to experience any altitude issues at Machu Picchu itself.

But be aware, trekking to Machu Picchu involves walking up and down several steep stairs, ramps and terraces at various altitudes, which can be strenuous.

Will the altitude affect me?

Most people start to feel the effects of altitude at over 2000 m (6561 ft) regardless of age, gender or fitness level. While our leaders have basic first aid training and are aware of the closest medical facilities, it is very important that you make yourself aware of the causes and effects of traveling at altitude. Monitor your health and seek assistance accordingly.

It is essential to take it easy, drink plenty of water and speak to your group leader immediately if you feel unwell.

We recommend seeing your doctor if you have health concerns before the trip, especially if you have a pre-existing medical condition or are taking any medication.

Do I need a permit to hike to Machu Picchu?

Everyone hiking to Machu Picchu via the iconic Inca Trail or the shorter Inca Trail Express requires a permit. You don't need a permit to trek via the Quarry or Choquequirao trails.

If you do the Inca Trail with Intrepid, our adventure consultants secure your permit for you so you can focus on getting excited – just make sure you have your passport details handy at the time of booking.

Permits are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so booking well in advance is critical.

We endeavor to purchase your permit within two working days of receiving all necessary information.

What should I pack for Machu Picchu?

For a day trip exploring Machu Picchu, we recommended taking a small backpack with the essentials: sunscreen, hat, water bottle (filled before departing), a few snacks and mosquito repellent. It helps to wear breathable pants, a long shirt and a waterproof jacket – since the UV index is higher in the Andes and the site is prone to rainfall.

If you plan to trek before visiting Machu Picchu, read our detailed packing instructions in your Essential Trip Information.

What is Wayna Picchu?

Wayna Picchu (also known also as Huayna Pichu or Wayna Pikchu) means ‘young peak’ in Quechua – although the mountain appears anything but young, towering behind Machu Picchu.

Known as the ‘stairs of death’, the hair-raising climb takes about three hours to return. More recently, a cap of 400 people a day has been introduced on the number of visitors allowed to climb.

Can I climb Wayna Picchu with Intrepid Travel?

We have performed risk assessments on all our optional activities, and unfortunately, we don't consider climbing Wayna Picchu a safe activity at this stage.

Reaching Wayna Picchu involves climbing steep, narrow and exposed sets of stairs, and we just can't guarantee your safety.

Our leaders are specifically prohibited from assisting you in visiting Wayna Picchu.

What are the toilet facilities like at Machu Picchu?

There are public toilets located at the main entrance of Machu Picchu and none after entering the site – so make sure you time your stop before heading off to explore.

Take some coins with you as there is a small fee to use the toilet facilities.

What does the Rainforest Alliance tick of approval mean?

The Rainforest Alliance is a non-profit organization. It is working to build strong forests, healthy agricultural landscapes and thriving communities.

The green frog seal shows that an enterprise has been audited to meet environmental, social, and economic sustainability standards.

The Rainforest Alliance recognizes Intrepid as one of Peru's top certified tourism businesses.

Can I visit Machu Picchu if I have a disability?

Yes, but of course it will depend on your level of disability, fitness and what support will be available to you.

People who are visually impaired have completed the Inca Trail (with the right support crew, of course).

Contact us to discuss your particular circumstances and we can assess it from there.

Does my trip support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. Trips to this country directly support our global Intrepid Foundation partners, Eden Reforestation Projects and World Bicycle Relief. Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

What should we bring for our rainbow mountain by horse?

It is impossible to appropriately dress for a day of horseback riding rainbow mountain Peru . When you leave Cusco at around 5:00 (05:30), you want to wear a few layers of gloves, and you’re most likely freezing.

When the bus dropped us off at the beginning of the ride, we were still shaking. When we saw people wearing shorts and T-shirts, we thought they were crazy. However, later in the day, the sun went down, bringing skin to the boil, and these travelers in shorts wore appropriate clothing. It was about our visit, but the travelers had a snowstorm the day before, so anything was possible.

  • An excellent daypack would be the Eagle Creek Afar Backpack, which is suitable for carrying your items!
  • Lighter trekking boots with good ankle support!
  • One pair of hiking pants—not jeans!
  • Be sure to carry one rain jacket.
  • One warm jacket or glove, a scarf, a cold cap, and thermal clothing for the entire body are necessary. “It’s changing weather all the time.”
  • Bring some meds!
  • Iron tablets and pills for altitude sickness
  • Sun protection cream (SPF 45 or higher is recommended)
  • A reusable container for your water.
  • Bandages or moleskin
  • Extra money.

8 Reasons Why Spring Is The Best Time To Visit Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is a citadel that sits high up in the Andes Mountains . It has been around since the 15th century. It is a mystery to scientists and even locals. Much of the appeal for travelers to visit the site comes from the worldwide interest in its roots .

The panoramic views of this magical destination are even more enjoyable during spring. Spring is one of the best times to visit Machu Picchu for many reasons. Travelers should check out what to look for during their upcoming spring trip to the “Lost City of the Incas.”

Average Temperature This Time of Year

55-75 Degrees F

The weather in Peru varies quite a lot. This is especially true since the dry and wet seasons are typically how locals organize the weather conditions of the country. The dry season, which takes up much of what others consider spring, typically runs from May to November. This is a significant time for visitors to note since the rainy season can make the New Wonder of the World site slippery. Around May travelers can enjoy clearer skies, which is great since the region can get quite foggy in the rainy season.

Travel Tip :

There are warm temperatures in spring near Machu Picchu, so travelers should wear appropriate clothing and pack bug spray.

Architectural Gems

This architectural phenomenon has attracted tourists from all over the world. It is renowned for its seamless integration of the natural landscape. People are often in awe of Machu Picchu since it has such a high elevation. The precision that ancient Incas achieved is truly impressive since they did not have the same tools as today. The technique used to create Machu Picchu was advanced for the time and is called ashlar masonry. This technique does not use mortar and was used to make the various buildings and walls that travelers can still view today.

Although photos are not discouraged at this architectural wonder, travelers can not enter Machu Picchu with drones or camera tripods.

Machu Picchu is a great place to visit during spring due to the agreeable temperatures. Hikers do not have to deal with the warm sun in spring as much. Travelers who plan to hike should visit Machu Picchu around April or May. The trails to get to the summit of Machu Picchu are not easy. This hiking adventure is best for travelers who consider themselves relatively fit and do not mind the 26-28-mile adventure.

Travelers who hike Machu Picchu need to stay hydrated and fed since the hike can get tiring. Sunscreen, snacks, bug spray, and altitude medication are all recommended.

Animal Sightings

The animal sightings at Machu Picchu are a big part of why the site has gained so much popularity. Although there are technically many animals surrounding and in Machu Picchu, one has gained the world’s admiration. The most iconic animal sighting is the Peruvian llama. The best part is they are indigenous to the Andes so they are quite comfortable at every altitude level. Many llamas at Machu Picchu will even pose for photos with tourists.

Llamas are typically friendly and peaceful and the ones at Machu Picchu are used to seeing people. However, if they feel threatened by tourists they may project a gnarly spit at them, so be respectful of their home.

Historical Significance

Historians believe that Machu Picchu was built at the height of the Incan Empire. It is particularly significant because of its artistic, architectural, and cultural achievements. Machu Picchu is the most tangible site for the legacy of the Inca civilization. The site was built around 1450 AD, and in 2007, it was named one of the Seven Wonders of the World. In 1983, it was also declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As a landmark, it has given historians and archaeologists significant intel about ancient civilizations.

Many modern archaeologists believe Machu Picchu was a royal estate for Incan emperors and nobles. Visiting travelers enjoy looking to collect clues and determine what they thought the site was intended for. However, visitors should not mess with the remnants of this ancient civilization.

Peru’s Culture

Much of Peru’s culture can be observed while journeying to Machu Picchu but the site is not all there is to see. If travelers have time for an extended stay, their experience will be even better. Travelers can take multiple-day tours around Peru that include a visit to Machu Picchu to further immerse themselves in the local culture.

Some tours even include culinary aspects. Local delicacies include ceviche, lomo saltado, Cuy al horno (guinea pig), and anticuchos. The locals are known for being kind and knowledgeable about their country, so travelers are encouraged to enjoy a more interactive cultural experience.

Aguas Calientes is the closest town to Machu Picchu and the top-rated place to stay. Staying there during a visit to the archaeological site may help travelers make local connections and understand more about Peru.

Spiritual Healing

Some historians believe that Machu Picchu served solely as a spiritual place for the Incas, especially because of its high elevation. Regardless of other ideas about the site, it certainly has served as a sacred space. Many visitors to Machu Picchu even rave that they had a moving spiritual experience while they were there. Its remote location and tranquil ambiance are likely the cause of such a significant experience for so many people. Some travelers say that making it up to Machu Picchu felt inspirational in their lives. There is no telling what positive impact visiting this sacred space may have for travelers. However, spring serves as a renewal period which makes it one of the best times to visit Machu Picchu.

Many wellness experiences based in Machu Picchu for travelers are focused on having a spiritual experience. Popular options include yoga and meditation classes.

A Whirlwind and Novelty Adventure

Since Machu Picchu is a more remote destination, it does take some work to arrive there. Luckily for travelers, this journey is best taken during the springtime. Since there is less rain and fog, the terrain is easier to navigate. One of the easiest ways to get to Machu Picchu is by taking a train from Cusco, a nearby town. Then travelers can take a bus to the ruins’ entrance and hike from there. Otherwise, travelers will need to embark on a strenuous walk from Aguas Calientes which would take about an hour and a half or two hours.

Travelers who want to follow in the footsteps of the Incas can take the classic Inca trail, but they should be physically prepared for the ascent.

Although many travelers go to Peru just for Machu Picchu, there is much to explore. However, springtime allows travelers to get to the site much more comfortably.
