G20 TWG meet yields valuable suggestions for Goa Roadmap draft: Arvind Singh

The Ministry of Tourism successfully hosted the 3rd TWG meet in Srinagar with participation of almost 60 delegates. As a post event activity, the ministry is collating feedback from members following which a final draft of the documents would be prepared by UNWTO. These would be presented at the fourth G20 TWG's last meeting set to take place in Goa from June 18 to June 22.

Natures Treasure Trove .. in Madhya Pradesh

When a state has the largest forest cover in the country, even the most ardent adventurer cannot second-guess the surprises the place can spring on him. With natures wholesome charms waiting to be explored around every corner, the vast and varied landscape of Madhya Pradesh is a discovery in every direction.

Eco - Tourism in Madhya Pradesh

Lying in the Satpura hill ranges, Pachmari is a beautiful round-the-year hill station and is popularly known as Satpura Ki Rani – The Queen of Satpura.

The setting up of jungle camps has made the forest accessible for visitors apart from providing employment opportunities for the locals.

About 60 km from Gwalior, the scenic Sonagiri Hills are dotted with Jain temples of the 9 th and 10 th century.

Renowned writer Rudyard Kipling was once at a loss of words at what he saw. It was a setting so stunning, the mesmerized writer was instantly inspired to create one of his greatest works – The Jungle book.

That’s the effect the beauty of Madhya Pradesh has on one’s soul. With more than a third of the state covered by vegetation, the land’s verdant plateau is interspersed with the highlands of the discontinuous Vindhya and Satpura mountain ranges, creating a stunning setting for the sore, urban eyes. While maintaining the raw charms of the land, The 20 year Perspective Plan of Madhya Pradesh Tourism established in 2003 has provided a filip for eco-tourism in the state. The setting up of Madhya Pradesh Ecotourism Development Board in 2005 has helped in conserving natural resources while, at the same time, making it more comfortable for nature lovers to enjoy the states pristine surroundings.

Ecotourism has also led to the creation of employment opportunities for the local villagers in the area of hospitality, catering, camp management, guide roles and adventure-based activities. While the local have found a new means of livelihood, the forest have gained new guardians.

Infrastructure

The establishments of jungle camps has made the dense forest accessible for visitors who wish to be amid nature. The Samardha Jungle Camp was one of the first such camps established around 20 km from the capital city of Bhopal. The first day here should simply be spent ambling out on a morning walk to soak in the cool climes and the sights and sounds of the jungle. There are designated trekking routes and nature walks that have been chalked out through virgin forest, with vantage points that give a wonderful glimpse of the terrain. But for those short on time and looking for some local sightseeing, there are things to do not too far away. Just 6 km from the camp is Satkunda, which has associations with the Ramayana. It is believed that Lord Rama dug seven wells at the location when Sita felt thirsty. You can still see the well here. About 5 km away is Chudail Dant, where rocks bear paintings that are said to be more than 1000 years old. The Tower sort offers a breathtaking view of the vast water body at the dam at Tawa near Itarsi.

Dhupgarh is the highest point of the Satpura mountain range. It is best known for its dazzling views of the sunrise and sunset. The path that leads up to Dhupgarh offers a gorgeous view of the surrounding valleys, and at night, the horizon is a mesmerizing display of lights reflected from the local villages. Other camps such as those at Kathotiya, Kerwa, Kukru and Rukhad also teleport you to the heart of nature, and catching up on sleep on a drive here is a strict no-no, with leopards, sloth bears, sambar, barking deer and spotted deer more than happy to be invited to a game of hide and seek. Bicycles available at the camps are a good way to go around with the local guides. For the more adventurous, activities such as rock climbing, rappelling, monkey crawling and river crossing are available at all levels of difficulty under the keen observation of trained instructors. Kayaking is perhaps the best option to mix up the adventure and jungle experience. The excursions are bound to live you ravenous, and there is nothing better than some piping hot local cuisine waiting on arrival back at the camp around a bonfire that creates the perfect setting for idle banter as the jungle comes alive with the setting sun. The rest of the evening can simply be spent stargazing under the open skies. While certain camps have a refurbished Rest House such as the one at Samardha, the tents are as comfortable and only make the experience more worthwhile. About 430 km north of Bhopal is the Deori National Chambal Sanctuary. The Chambal river that serpents lazily through it is a haven for crocodiles and ghariyals, while also home to the elusive Gangetic River Dolphins and other dwellers such as Turtles and River Otters. The water bodies are also good grounds for bird watchers, with over 150 species reporting including flamingos, bar headed geese, brahmani ducks and pelicans. An early hour boat outing is a must. Another interesting day trip can be made to the Tighra dam, which is just 23 km from the city of Gwalior. While the dam was originally built to provide water to the city, the water body soon drew birds that made it to their habitat. The arrival of the endangered great Indian Bustard changed the profile of the area and he Ghatigaon Wildlife Santuary was established in 1981.

The national parks of Madhya Pradesh are among India's most sought-after tourist destinations. All of them offer morning and evening safaris for viewing the wildlife which includes tigers, leopards, bisons, beers, deer and a huge variety of exotic birds.

Biosphere Reserves

The best way to appreciate the natural landscape of Madhya Pradesh is from above -parasailing offers tourists the opportunity to see the entirety of the vast, enchanting landscape and taking the sheer expanse of beauty that this magnificent state has to offer. Madhya Pradesh is a havan of picturesque treks in and around Pachmari, which is also known as the Queen of Satpura. Just 5 km away from the town lies Dhupgarh - the highest point in the state at 1350 m and a good spot to gaze at a peaceful sunset. For those who want a higher peak at the surrounds, parasailing is a popular option. A trail past the caves leads to Apsara Vihar, which is a little pond filled by a waterfall. A gentle climb up from here takes you to a vantage point which gives spectacular views of Rajat Prapat, which is the highest waterfall in the area with a drop of about 107 m. About 3 km north of the main village along a trail lies Jata Shankar, which is a cave temple with a natural Shivling that has been formed over the years due to erosion. If you are ready for a longer trip, plan a visit to the Chauragarh Temple. The trail starts at the Mahadeo Temple, about 9 km from Pachmari. The 4 km trail climbs to an altitude of 1,330 m - the second highest elevation in the state where the temple is located. The final ascent involves more than 1,300 steps carved in the rock face.

Satpura Maikal Landscape

Another echo-destination is Amarkantak, which lies in the Maikal Hills about 55 km from Bhopal. While it is a primarily known as a religious spot, there are some wonderful hikes in the vicinity. Time is always a constraint in the wilderness but there is a surprise awaiting you at every step in the forests of Madhya Pradesh. Kipling would simply agree.

Eco-tourism in MP’s Tiger Reserves gathers momentum

Wildlife enthusiasts are back in the tiger reserves of Madhya Pradesh, swelling the exchequer with extra revenue and providing local inhabitants with gainful employment.

After the lull in tourism for nearly a year and a half of the pandemic, the forests of Panna are slowly filling up with the excited murmurs of tourists. This spells good news not just for the revenue of the forest department, but also for the hundreds of people who depend on wildlife tourism for a livelihood.

“Every year there are more than ten lakh tourists who visit the national parks and sanctuaries in Madhya Pradesh,” Uttam Kumar Sharma, field operator, Panna Tiger Reserve, told Gaon Connection . “The entrance fee alone to these parks and sanctuaries brings in a revenue of about thirty crore rupees to the exchequer,” he said. In 2020-21 the Panna Tiger Reserve earned Rs 1.5 crore and it is expected it will earn a lot more, Uttam Kumar Sharma said. There are more than 70 tigers in the Panna Tiger Reserve, with more than 20 cubs.

According to Sharma while the entrance fee alone earned the Panna Tiger Reserve about Rs 1.67 crores annually, eco-tourism in the region generates Rs 21 crores worth of economy.

The Panna Tiger Reserve generates employment for nearly 1,800 people inhabiting eight villages in and around the reserve. Besides this, more than 700 people earn their livelihood as daily wagers.

According to information from the Panna Tiger Reserve, of the 576.13 square kilometres of the core area of the reserve, only 17 per cent is open to tourists. The rules of touring the area are very strict with tourists visiting the allowed areas in permitted vehicles during fixed times. The core zone allows up to 85 vehicles each day. Besides the core zone, the Akola and Jhinna buffer zones are also open to tourists. 

According to Uttam Kumar Sharma, tourism is allowed in the buffer zones throughout the year and there are night safaris that can be organised too that go on till 9.30 pm. The buffer zones are popular with the tourists as they more often than not are able to spot a tiger or two there.

According to Uttam Kumar Sharma, a lot of wildlife tourism flourishes where there are tigers. “That is one reason why the Panna Tiger Reserve over a decade has managed to survive the ups and downs and other challenges it has faced,” he said.

There was a time when the Panna Tiger Reserve had become empty of tigers, Sharma recalled. “By 2009 tigers had completely disappeared from the Panna forest. This had a severe impact on tourist flow. But, in March 2009 efforts were made on a war footing to repopulate the Panna forests,” Sharma said. “A tigress was brought from Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve to Panna Tiger Reserve, then another tigress was brought here from Kanha Tiger Reserve and finally, a male tiger arrived from Pench,” Sharma added. The focus centred entirely on the conservation and repopulation process of the tigers in Panna, Sharma said. The mission was a success. 

Besides tiger-sighting, the Panna Tiger Reserve has a lot more to offer by way of eco-tourism. The core area has the beautiful Pandav Falls, Raneh Falls, Ken Gharial sanctuary, etc.

“There are ninety one guides who show tourists around in the ninety one vehicles of the Panna Tiger Reserve,” Puneet Sharma, a guide at the reserve, told Gaon Connection . Most of the guides were from villages near the tiger reserve, she added. “Because they too benefit from the Tiger Reserve, the people here are also committed towards conservation of wildlife and the ecology,” she said.

Brijendra Pratap Singh, local legislator and mineral resources and labour minister, Madhya Pradesh said Panna had come to be identified worldwide with its tiger reserve. He said it was important to work towards making the tiger reserve a source of employment and livelihood for people in the region. “Panna Tiger Reserve has come so far, starting from nothing and is a shining example of tiger and wildlife conservation. Today, tigers roam the forests of Panna, both in its core area and in the buffer zones.” According to the guidelines of the National Tiger Conservation Authority, only 20 per cent of the core area of a tiger reserve is allowed to be open to tourists. The three other tiger reserves in Madhya Pradesh at Kanha, Pench and Bandhavgarh, tourists are making full use of this. In Panna however, the tourist activity is not up to potential in the core area.

Speaking to reporters after a public meeting in Manali, Singh said a drop has been noticed in the inflow of tourists to Kullu district after the summers. Therefore, a plan has been developed to promote eco-tourism in the area in order to maintain tourist footfall throughout the year, the state minister added.

The Congress has pitted Singh against BJP candidate and actor Kangana Ranaut. Hitting out at Ranaut, Singh said, ''I request former chief minister Jai Ram Thakur to and teach her so that she can know what work has been done in Mandi by the Congress-led government at the Centre.'' In one of her election rallies, Ranaut had asked what Singh's family did for Mandi despite representing the constituency several times in the Parliament.

The Congress leader said the scheme of 24-hour drinking water supply in Kullu and Manali, establishment of IIT Mandi and construction of Medical College in Ner Chowk were done during the Congress regime.

''Apart from this, there are many such schemes about which Kangana Ranaut knows nothing. She just keeps making baseless statements and has no idea about the developmental works undertaken at the grassroots level,'' the Himachal Pradesh PWD minister added.

Vikramaditya Singh, the two-time MLA from the Shimla (rural) Assembly segment, is the titular king of the erstwhile princely state of Bushahr.

He is the son of Mandi sitting MP Pratibha Singh, who is representing the constituency for the third time in the parliament. His father Virbhadra Singh was also a three-time MP form the same seat.

The Mandi parliamentary seat, which goes to polls on June 1 in the last phase of the Lok Sabha elections, is spread over six districts comprises 17 assembly segments, eight of which are reserved for Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled castes.

Shimla May 19, (PTI) Congress’ Mandi candidate Vikramaditya Singh on Sunday said if elected as an MP, he will focus on promoting eco-tourism in the area.

Speaking to reporters after a public meeting in Manali, Singh said a drop has been noticed in the inflow of tourists to Kullu district after the summers.

Therefore, a plan has been developed to promote eco-tourism in the area in order to maintain tourist footfall throughout the year, the state minister added.

Cairngorms National Park is a haven for outdoor activities, facilitating hiking, water sports, and winter activities depending on the time of year.

According to the park’s website, the Cairngorms National Park Authority “work[s] with partners, business, land-owners, and communities to develop long term plans for the Park.” Effectively, this park is managed by the people of the nearby towns, instead of solely by a separate entity.

Saving The Nēnēs - Hawaii's National Parks

While many know the story of the gray wolves of Yellowstone National Park, there are a number of far less well-known species that exist today only because of the conservation efforts of the national park system.

Such is the case with the Nēnē goose in Hawaii. There were once nine native goose species in Hawaii , living in isolation on the islands. Due to human encroachment, loss of habitat and food, and the introduction of non-native predators like dogs, eight of those species have disappeared.

Thankfully, devoted efforts of the two national parks in Hawaii have been able to save the Nēnē. Both Haleakalā National Park on Maui and Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island have worked tirelessly to monitor and protect the native Nēnē population.

The Nēnēs once roamed all of the Hawaiian islands, numbering in the thousands. By the 1940s, only around 30 individuals remained . These birds were moved to the protected lands of the national parks, where they could remain undisturbed.

Today, while the population is still considered vulnerable, numbers are steadily increasing, and the odds of spotting one of these once critically endangered birds on one of Hawaii’s many secret and scenic hikes are ever-increasing.

Like a pedestrian bridge over a major highway, migration highways are designed to allow native wildlife a way to cross the roads without having to brave the traffic.

Atop these bridges is a recreation of the natural habitat, making it a comfortable place to cross.

The benefits of this ecotourism initiative are numerous. First and foremost, these bridges reduce unfortunate wildlife-vehicle encounters. Banff National Park was particularly interested in reducing bear-car collisions, which have been reduced by 50 to 100 percent in areas with the bridges .

The success of this two-decade-long project has not gone unnoticed. Numerous other regions, inside and outside national parks, have prevented countless vehicle deaths with these bridges.
