For some reason, when US band Mudvayne first emerged around the turn of the millennium they were lumped in with the nu metal crowd. Well, I know the reason: because they wore makeup and costumes not a million miles away from bands like Slipknot and Mushroomhead. However, this four-piece from Illinois were much more technical and experimental than the rest of the scene, with a sound much closer to math metal.

Regrettably, probably due to sales, Mudvayne have tended to focus on touring America rather than crossing the pond to Europe. But when they have come over, they have been electric. Particularly during the early part of their career, around the release of the first and second albums L.D. 50 (2000) and The End Of All Things To Come (2002), their shows were adrenaline-fuelled and frantic, with the four members often in makeup and costumes (the best shows were when they’d play in ‘roadkill’, blood-splattered animal outfits).

Songs like ‘Dig’ and ‘Not Falling’ have become alt-metal anthems and nothing beats hearing Chad Gray’s distinctive scream live, but their more melodic side is often overlooked – Gray has a great melodic voice and prog ballads like ‘World So Cold’ hit hardest in the live arena.

Their later career has seen them tone down the mathy aggression in favour of a more straightforward rock approach, and they seem to be on something of a hiatus while Gray focuses on his sideproject Hellyeah, but here’s hoping they reunite - and reunite with some renewed venom - as soon as possible.

I have never seen Mudvayne before and I wish of could of when they were still together. I ❤️ Chad Gray and I know I ❤️ him in Hellyeah and I was glad I got to see Hellyeah for the first time this year back on May 13 at Rockfest in CB and they were amazing.

Mudvayne Announce Summer 2023 US Tour with Coal Chamber, GWAR, and More

The "Pyschotherapy Sessions" tour kicks off in July

Mudvayne Announce Summer 2023 US Tour with Coal Chamber, GWAR, and More

Mudvayne have announced the “Psychotherapy Sessions” Summer 2023 US tour with support from Coal Chamber , GWAR , Nonpoint, and Butcher Babies.

Dates kick off July 20th in West Palm Beach, Florida, and run through August 26th in Englewood, California.

Tickets are available via StubHub , where orders are 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s FanProtect program. StubHub is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

The outing will be Mudvayne’s first headlining tour in over a decade, and the nu-metal vets have culled together quite the tour package to mark the occasion. The bill features a reunited Coal Chamber — fronted by DevilDriver’s Dez Fafara — following up their appearance at the Sick New World festival in May. Meanwhile, the dates with Mudvayne are GWAR’s only non-festival gigs on the books for 2023 thus far.

Remarked Mudvayne drummer Matt McDonough in a press statement: “An Event. On the Horizon. Over 25 years in the making. Brave travelers… You, and the alien seed — MuDvAyNe. A journey begun. Reaching Zenith. Now for the Eschatology.”

MUDVAYNE's first U.S. show of 2024: See Welcome to Rockville setlist and videos

Mudvayne dug into the nu-metal hits at Welcome to Rockville yesterday (May 9th), marking the the face-painted favorites ' first U.S. show of 2024.

While last year frontman Chad Gray said the band were working on "exciting" new music, the daytime performance in Daytona Beach, Florida, featured an eras-spanning clutch of classics, starting with 2007 single "Dull Boy," through to The End of All Things to Come 's "Not Falling" and "World So Cold," and — yes, obviously — they closed with "Dig."

You can see slap-sensational bassist Ryan Martinie go brr brr deng for the Florida faithful down below, where you'll also find setlist (via Setlist.fm ).

As previously reported, Mudvayne are due to hit the road on Megadeth's massive "Destroy All Enemies" tour this summer, a two-month trek that also finds them traveling the U.S. with All That Remains. You'll find the dates over here .

Mudvayne Play ‘Fish Out of Water’ Live for First Time Ever at Summer Tour Kickoff – Setlist

Mudvayne 's Psychotherapy Sessions summer tour with Coal Chamber , GWAR , Nonpoint and Butcher Babies kicked off last night (July 20) and the headliners played a 15-song set that included the first-ever live performance of "Fish Out Of Water" as well as their cover of The Police 's "King of Pain."

The trek, which runs through Aug. 26, launched in West Palm Beach, Florida amid the scorching heat blanketing most of the United States. It was the very first headlining tour performance for Mudvayne since playing their first comeback show in 2021 at the Inkcarceration Music & Tattoo Festival.

It's been all fest stops for Mudvayne until now and it was a notable night for the reunited Coal Chamber, who also made their first tour appearance since playing their first reunion show earlier this year at the Sick New World Festival.

For both fans who grew up with the bands in the mid-to-late 1990s and 2000s and those who never had a chance to witness them back then, this tour is a special one.

READ MORE:  Mudvayne Working on First New Music in 14 Years, Chad Gray Confirms

The kickoff found Mudvayne playing a cover of The Police's "King of Pain" live for the first time as well. The song originally appeared on the band's 2007 compilation  By the People, For the People , while "Fish Out of Water" is culled from 2008's  The New Game .

MUDVAYNE's GREG TRIBBETT Misses Concert Due To Family Emergency

MUDVAYNE guitarist Greg Tribbett was forced to miss the band's May 18 concert at the Premier Theater at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut due to a family emergency. Playing all guitar parts at the show was MUDVAYNE 's second guitarist, Marcus Rafferty , who has been joining the band on the road to fill out the sound.

Rafferty is a veteran guitar technician who has previously worked with LAMB OF GOD , HATEBREED , SAXON , FOZZY and MUDVAYNE . He also spent time as a guitar tech and stage manager for HELLYEAH , the band MUDVAYNE singer Chad Gray co-founded in 2006 with Tribbett alongside late PANTERA drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott .

MUDVAYNE will support MEGADETH on a North American tour this summer. The 33-city, nationwide trek, "Destroy All Enemies" , produced by Live Nation , includes stops in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Boston, St. Louis and many more. With additional support from ALL THAT REMAINS , the tour begins in Rogers, Arkansas on August 2 and runs throughout the month before wrapping in Nashville, Tennessee on September 28.

MUDVAYNE completed its first headlining tour in over 14 years, "The Psychotherapy Sessions" , last summer. Support on the 26-city trek, which was produced by Live Nation , came from COAL CHAMBER , along with GWAR , NONPOINT and BUTCHER BABIES .

Previously, MUDVAYNE made waves in 2022 when they embarked on the "Freaks On Parade" tour co-headlined with ROB ZOMBIE . This 2023 tour, however, marked MUDVAYNE 's first headlining endeavor since 2009.

Gray told The Oakland Press that his "main motivation for putting [ MUDVAYNE ] back together and coming back was our fans", including those who discovered the band during its absence. "There's so many younger kids that are coming up and coming into our world, the metal world, and they're learning about MUDVAYNE ," he said. "So you have this, like, the ground's kind of rumbling and it goes out and touches more and more people, but we weren't out there to scratch that itch. You still have your actual fan base but you're accumulating new people. So when we came back it was very exciting for us. It was about our fans and giving those new fans the experience."

MUDVAYNE formed in 1996 and has sold over six million records worldwide, earning gold certification for three albums ( "L.D. 50" , "The End Of All Things To Come" , "Lost And Found" ). The band is known for its sonic experimentation, innovative album art, face and body paint, masks and uniforms. MUDVAYNE is Gray , Tribbett (guitar, backing vocals), Matthew McDonough (drums, synthesizer) and Ryan Martinie (bass).

Gray spent 15 years fronting HELLYEAH , which released its sixth studio album, "Welcome Home" , in September 2019 via Eleven Seven Music . The disc marked the group's final effort with drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott , who passed away six years ago.

MUDVAYNE did not tour behind its fifth album, which was barely promoted and sold weakly upon release.

Featuring some of Mustaine’s strongest-ever songwriting, the tour offers an equally ambitious live performance that delivers on all fronts.

“Our ‘Crush The World’ tour has been a tremendous experience for the four of us,” shared Dave Mustaine. “We are all playing tight, and that has made it possible for me to really focus on solos and singing, we are playing more songs than ever before, and we are closer to each other, onstage AND off. I’m excited to see Mudvayne, and All That Remains. Join us as we DESTROY ALL ENEMIES.”

The North American jaunt comes on the heels of a highly anticipated and successful stint in Latin America wrapping this month and starting back up in Europe this summer. With stops in Peru, Chile, Argentina, Brazil and México and forthcoming dates in Sweden, Italy, France, Germany and more, the band’s global appeal and lasting impact is more apparent than ever as continued calls for international touring are demanded.

Megadeth, alongside founder and frontman Dave Mustaine, are renowned for their unparalleled energy and mastery on stage. In 2023, the GRAMMY-Award winning band dominated arenas and festivals, reaffirming its status as one of heavy metal’s most formidable live acts. Dubbed “as ferocious and hard-hitting as ever” by AllMusic , Megadeth enjoyed sold-out shows and critical acclaim on the latest run of the Crush The World Tour captivating audiences and showcasing the latest and greatest hits.

PGA Tour's Grayson Murray dies at 30

No cause of death was given for the golfer, who withdrew from the schwab cup challenge in fort worth on friday..

Grayson Murray

Golfer Grayson Murray has died at age 30. Murray withdrew from competition in the Charles Schwab Challenge on Friday, May 24, due to illness, according to ESPN. In this photo, Murray plays his shot from the 12th tee during the first round of the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club on May 16, 2024 in Louisville, Kentucky.

Two-time PGA Tour winner Grayson Murray died Saturday morning at age 30, one day after he withdrew from the Charles Schwab Cup Challenge at Colonial.

There were no immediate details on the circumstances of his death, only shock and grief from the PGA Tour and his management team.

“I am at a loss for words,” PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said. “The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.”

His management company, GSE Worldwide, confirmed the death and said it was heartbroken.

“We will hold off on commenting until we learn further details, but our heart aches for his family, his friends and all who loved him during this very difficult time,” GSE said in a statement.

Monahan said he spoke with Murray’s parents to offer condolences, and they asked that the tournament in Fort Worth, Texas, continue.

He said grief counselors would be on site at the PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour event in Knoxville, Tennessee. Monahan headed to Texas and later appeared on CBS as the third round was ending.

“To see the devastation on the faces of every player coming in is really difficult to see and really just profound,” Monahan said. “Grayson was a remarkable player, but he was a very courageous man. I’ve always loved that about him.”

Murray, who had dealt with alcohol and mental health issues in the past, made a massive turnaround this year and won the Sony Open, hitting wedge to 3 feet for birdie on the final hole to get into a playoff and winning it with a 40-foot putt.

He also won the Barbasol Championship in 2017.

“It was a huge shock. My heart sank,” said Webb Simpson, who learned of Murray’s death shortly before teeing off at Colonial. He said Murray was the first winner of his junior tournament and they shared the same swing coach as juniors.

“I just hate it so much,” Simpson said. “I’m miss him. I’m thankful he was in the place with his faith before this morning happened.”

Murray was No. 58 in the world rankings coming off a tie for 43rd in the PGA Championship last week at Valhalla. He also made the cut in his Masters debut, finishing 51st, and was in the field for the U.S. Open next month at Pinehurst No. 2.

Murray, who grew up in North Carolina, was among the most talented juniors in the country. He won the prestigious Junior World Championship in San Diego three straight years and earned the Arnold Palmer Scholarship at Wake Forest.

He wound up going to three colleges, lastly at Arizona State, and won as a 22-year-old PGA Tour rookie at the Barbasol Championship.

Murray said in January that he had been sober for eight months, was engaged to be married, had become a Christian and felt his best golf was ahead of him. He was appointed to the 16-member Player Advisory Council.

“My story is not finished. I think it’s just beginning,” Murray said in Hawaii. “I hope I can inspire a lot of people going forward that have their own issues.”

Murray said he used to drink during tournament weeks as a rookie because he knew he had talent and felt he was invincible. He also brought attention to himself through social media, openly criticizing other players and getting into one social media spat with Kevin Na over Na’s reputation as a slow player.

But he felt like he turned the corner when he sought help — letting others fight for him, is how he explained it this year.

“It took me a long time to get to this point,” Murray said in January. “That was seven years ago, over seven years ago. I’m a different man now. I would not be in this position right now today if I didn’t put that drink down eight months ago.”

Peter Malnati played with Murray at Colonial. He offered to go on the CBS telecast Saturday afternoon and immediately broke down trying to talk about him.

“It’s a huge loss for all of us on the PGA Tour,” Malnati said. “As much as we want to beat each other, we’re one big family, and we lost one today. It’s terrible.”

Grayson Murray, Two-Time PGA Tour Winner, Dies at 30

Bob harig | 1 hour ago.

Grayson Murray on the 14th green during the first round of the Wells Fargo Championship golf tournament.

PGA Tour player Grayson Murray has died, according to a statement issued by commissioner Jay Monahan Saturday afternoon.

Murray, 30, was competing in the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas and withdrew with two holes to play Friday during the second round. No cause of death has been reported so far.

The tournament is continuing Saturday, per the wishes of Murray's family, Monahan said.

Murray was ranked 58th in the world and finished tied for 43rd at last week’s PGA Championship. He played in his first Masters earlier this year, finishing 51st, after winning the Sony Open in Hawai'i in January—his second PGA Tour title.

Earlier this year, Murray spoke of recovering from alcohol abuse.

“My story is not finished,” he said after his victory in a playoff in Hawai’i. “I think it's just the beginning. I hope I can inspire a lot of people going forward that have their own issues.”

Murray was slated to be a part of the field for the U.S. Open next month at Pinehurst No. 2.

“We were devastated to learn—and are heartbroken to share—that PGA Tour player Grayson Murry passed away this morning,” Monahan said. “I am at a loss for words.

“I reached out to Grayson’s parents to offer our deepest condolences, and during that conversation, they asked that we continue with tournament play. They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so. As difficult as it will be, we want to respect their wishes.”

A cinema tour of Moscow - tips for true film buffs | A cinema tour of Moscow - tips for true film buffs

New Delhi [India], May 25: The beautiful, eclectic and colourful city of Moscow, witness to so many historical epochs, is always taking part in movie shoots - its streets, squares and buildings in a range of architectural styes are being used as settings for Russian and international films. In April, a film crew led by director Venkat Prabhu was at work on Moscow's streets: scenes from the Russian capital will be used in his action film "The Greatest of All Time". Moscow has also attracted the attention of other Indian producers looking for a film set: following several business missions to the city held by Moscow Agency of Creative Industries, Indian filmmakers are planning their first shoots in the city. Below, we describe some of the Moscow sights which will soon be seen by Indian viewers and the most interesting locations in the city for committed cinephiles.

Cult film locations

The Russian capital very recently became the setting of the Indian action film "The Greatest of All Time" by director Venkat Prabhu: it was shot on Manezhnaya Square, the chase and gun-fight scenes were filmed in Lyalin, Barashevsky and Maly Kazenny Lanes, on Patriarch Bridge and in other Moscow streets. A spy thriller starring Vijay in the role of an Indian secret agent, it will be the first foreign film produced via the Moscow digital film platform, a new service for filmmakers. Foreign directors can use it to select filming locations, equipment and props online. In the words of Venkat Prabhu, working with Moscow colleagues is an absolute delight. "Here in Moscow, they have a really good team", he said. "They are brilliant. For example, we were filming a motorcycle chase here and it worked out really well: watch out for it in the movie, you'll love it". The film crew of "The Greatest of All Time" spent around two weeks in Moscow. In the film, a retired secret agent returns to Moscow to complete an unfinished mission from the past. "To be honest, few Indian films have been shot in Moscow, and I wanted to give our viewers this experience", said Prabhu, explaining his choice of location for the main action. "We all studied Russian culture and history at school, and it is so nice to be here now and to show this city to our viewers. Moscow plays a very important role in our film".

Moscow has repeatedly been chosen as a film set by foreign directors who prefer real locations to studio mockups. For example, part of "The Bourne Supremacy" - the sequel to the thriller "The Bourne Identity" - was filmed in Kiev railway station, and the stunning car chase was filmed around the Moscow Youth Palace near the Frunzenskaya metro station. The villains in the film race through Ivanovskaya Hill, Rozhdestvensky Boulevard, Trubnaya Square and along the Raushkaya and Taras Shevchenko Embankments.

In the late 1980s, on Red Square, Arnold Schwarzenegger played an incorruptible policeman in Walter Hill's movie "Red Heat". It was still quite difficult to get filming permission at that time, and a result the scene was shot from handheld cameras in a bit of a rush. But the two main heroes, Red Square and the great Arnie, went down in history together.

By 1994, it was easier for Alan Metter to get the Moscow government's approval to film the final episode "Police Academy" in the city. While the "good cops" together with the Russian police track down a villain, the viewers can enjoy views of Red Square and the Mausoleum, the Bolshoi Theatre, Novodevichi Monastery, Gorky Park and other famous Moscow landmarks.

In 2014, Paul Anderson went further - quite literally: his film crew was not only given five hours of creative access to Red Square but was also permitted to film in the Moscow Metro. His film "Resident Evil: Retribution" features shots of the Arbatskaya station. Some film critics to this day believe that Andersen owed his good luck to Milla Jovovich and her Russan roots.

Film art masterpieces from around the world in their original languages

Moscow plays host to one of the oldest international film shows - the Moscow International Film Festival, which has been held since 1935. The first chairman of the Festival jury was the great director Sergey Eisenstein, and since then it has featured Richard Geer, Luc Besson, Robert de Niro, Theo Angelopoulos, Kim Ki-duk, Alan Parker, Emir Kusturica and other global cinema stars. MFF's red carpet has been graced by Michelangelo Atonioni, Sophia Loren and Elisabeth Taylor. Since 1999, the festival has been held annually, and this year presented its 46th international film show programme. This year, India was represented by the Tamil melodrama "Seven Seas Seven Hills" from producer Ram, and by film critic Indu Shrikent, who was a member of the festival jury. One of the awards made by the jury was went to "Need to Shoot Movies About Love", a film which was shot in India and got a special mention "For reflecting gentleness in the waters of the River Ganges". True connoisseurs of festival cinema strive to attend the Moscow International Film Festival year after year, and often time their visits to Moscow to coincide with famous film shows. In recent years, MIFF has been held every April, but it is best to keep an eye on the festival announcements. The films are traditionally shown in their original language with subtitles, so that foreign visitors can enjoy watching moves in their own language.

An alternative to guided tours - Moscow's cinemas

Tourists rarely visit Moscow's cinemas, which is such a shame, because many of them have retained their historic appeal, unique decor and atmosphere. Furthermore, many of them show films in foreign languages, so you could well spend a cold, rainy day in a cozy cinema hall like a real Muscovite. Amongst the cinema must-sees are Moskino Fakel (Shosse Entuziastov 15/16) - one of the oldest cinemas in the city, which is reviving and maintaining the arthouse cinema tradition. It was originally opened on the ground floor of a residential Stalin-era skyscraper, and since being refurbished it has retained its charm as an urban haunt for fans of arthouse films.

Another strategic meeting place for Moscow cinephiles is the Illusion cinema, located inside one of the Stalin-era towers (Kotelnicheskaya Naberezhnaya 1/15). Here, in historical interiors amongst stucco moldings and bar-reliefs, you can watch unique archive films from the State Cinema Fund, international classics and contemporary indie and festival films in their original languages. The building is stylized as a Soviet cinema and decorated with copies of old posters and photographs from famous movies.

GUM - the Main Department Store - is a wonderful place for guided tours and shopping, but film lovers know it and love it for its vintage cinema in the heart of Moscow (Red Square 3). The cinema was created by special order of GUM's architects, applying the very highest acoustic standards and refined theatre decoration. And there is plenty to admire while you wait for your film to start: early 20th century stucco moldings and the famous crystal chandeliers, which have been treated with a special chemical to stop them reverberating in tune with high- or low-frequency sounds. During film showings, the cinema's enormous windows are covered by stately velvet curtains, and instead of the usual seats, visitors recline in soft velvet chairs or spacious velvet sofas. In one hall, there in a bar where they serve Soviet-style cakes, sandwiches, champagne and lemonade in place of the usual fast-food snacks.

Moscow's legendary Khudozhestvenny cinema (Arbatskaya Square 14) can be regarded as an architectural landmark, a place for guided tours, and as a unique and memorable place to watch a film during a visit to the city. Tickets can cost as much as $100, because here you are not only watching an ordinary film while you fiddle with your popcorn - you are in a place visited by Lev Tolstoy and Sergey Yesenin, and were Sergey Eisenstein's film "Battleship Potemkin" was first shown. Several years ago, the building was thoroughly renovated using the blueprints from architect Franz Shechtel. Inside the cinema, they run specially designed tours, and visitors are thrilled to get their photos taken against the backdrop of the famous undulating staircase and the cinema's trademark bright-scarlet chairs.

Moscow's film sets - complete immersion in the world of cinema

For a true movie buff, no trip to Moscow could be complete without a visit to Mosfilm (Ulitsa Mosfilmovskaya 1) - the huge film company spread across an area of 30 hectares, where wonderful Soviet films were shot and which continues to make Russian movies today. The grounds of Mosfilm are like a fantasy town with streets and squares from different historical epochs, its own piece of old-world Saint Petersburg and old Moscow, provincial Russian towns and even Paris. Mosfilm's museum contains some genuine rarities, including a collection of retro cars, vintage carriages, movies props, costumers and bits of scenery, stands with rare camera equipment and even the original Worker and Kolkhoz Woman sculpture by Vera Mukhina, familiar to all fans of Soviet film. This duo of Soviet heroes became the film studio's emblem and features in the intro sequence to every film it has made.

You can now complete your fascinating film tour in Moscow's recently created Moskino cinema park (Krasnaya Pakhra, Quarter 107). The outdoor film set area is still under construction, but once complete it will extend across approximately 320 hectares and become the biggest cinema complex in Europe. The first phase is already open to filmmakers and tourists, however. Here you can take a walk around the streets of a 1940s town on the outskirts of Moscow, imagine yourself as a peasant in a little Russan village or a fisherman in a fishing port, or else as a resident of Wild West cowboy town. The Reichstag still stands on one cinema street, along with the still-intact wall dividing East and West Germany, and "bits" of European cities indistinguishable from the originals. In the near future, a 12th-century Kremlin will be added, along with medieval structures and pavilions representing a railway station and an airport.

Film buffs cannot leave Moscow without taking a look at the reconstruction of film director Sergey Eisenstein's office in the Cinema Museum at the National Economic Achievements #exhibition (Prospekt Mira 119, Pavilion 36, Dziga Vertov cinema hall). The museum space itself is a real journey through the history of Russian cinema, from the fairground era via avant-garde experiments to the Stalinist period and wartime cinema, followed by the thaw years, indie cinema and the perestroika cinema boom of the 1980s. You will be guided along the way by manuscripts, posters, commemorative items and drawings, and vintage cinema equipment. Eisenstein's office occupies a separate room in the museum. The historic building where the director lived in Moscow has not survived, but his room has been recreated using household items and personal effects from his Moscow home, along with the classical engravings and books amongst which he grew up. The eclectic furniture, coloured walls and interior design have all been faithfully reproduced to convey the vivid artistic atmosphere that Eisenstein created in his office.

Come to Moscow, study its cinema life and make your own film here about your trip around Russia's surprising and diverse capital city!

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Two-time PGA Tour winner Grayson Murray died Saturday morning.

No cause of death has been disclosed.

Murray withdrew from the Charles Schwab Challenge on Friday during the second round due to illness.

Grayson Murray

“We were devastated to learn — and are heartbroken to share — that PGA Tour player Grayson Murray passed away this morning,” PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said in a statement. “I am at a loss for words. The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same.

“We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones. I reached out to Grayson’s parents to offer our deepest condolences, and during that conversation, they asked that we continue with tournament play. They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so.

“As difficult as it will be, we want to respect their wishes. The PGA Tour has grief counselors available at both tournament sites, as well as virtually for those not in the field. I am en route to Ft. Worth and will share more information when we can.”

Grayson Murray

Murray won the Sony Open this past January as well as Barbasol Championship in 2017.

He had been open earlier about battling depression and alcohol issues throughout his career, and said in 2023 that he had gotten sober.

“I just thought I was a failure,” he said. “I thought I had a lot of talent that was just a waste of talent.”

After playing collegiately at Wake Forest, East Carolina and Arizona State, Murray turned pro in 2015.

Including his two PGA Tour wins, Murray had 10 top-10 finishes.

CBS announcer Jim Nantz became emotional while announcing the news during the third round of the Charles Schwab Challenge on Saturday.

“I just want to say that the Tour did offer to the [Murray] family to stop play, right here basically at the top of the hour,” Nantz said on the broadcast. “The family was adamant that Grayson and the family wants the tournament to go on. Grayson Murray, gone way too soon, at the age of 30.

“It’s a sad day on the PGA tour. And somehow, with heavy hearts, we’re gonna cover a golf tournament after a break. We’re gonna cover it, we’re gonna try as best we can, be as respectful as we can in our tone and in our hearts.”

The Nerve of Madonna to Pull It Off, Again

Eighteen years ago, Madonna observed : “Once you pass 35, your age becomes part of the first sentence of anything written. It’s a form of limiting your options and almost putting you in your place. For women, naturally.” She was 47 when she said that and intent on challenging the cultural script that suggested women, especially female performers, had a use-by date.

“Why is that acceptable?” she asked the music writer Brian Hiatt nearly 10 years later, still battling critics who told her to dress her age, act her age — in short, pack it in and retreat from the spotlight because she was past her prime. “Women, generally, when they reach a certain age, have accepted that they’re not allowed to behave a certain way. But I don’t follow the rules.”

To the question “Is she still relevant?” her Celebration Tour, which concluded this month, is proof that she is. Madonna performed before the largest audience ever gathered to watch a female artist and staged the single biggest free stand-alone concert in history: 1.6 million people turned Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana Beach into a dance floor on May 4. According to Billboard , her six-month, 80-show tour grossed $225.4 million, making her the only woman in history to gross more than $100 million during each of six concert tours. (The only solo male in that category is Bruce Springsteen.)

But there’s so much more to her triumph than numbers. That a 65-year-old female pop star pulled off this tour and, despite our increasingly intolerant times, the performance was her most relentlessly and delightfully queer since 1990’s groundbreaking Blond Ambition Tour would be unimaginable, except that it was Madonna. The Celebration Tour proved that Madonna wasn’t afraid of drawing attention to her long career; she owned it proudly.

All of her past selves showed up, in role and in costume, to help celebrate the many ways she has evolved and the many ways she and her collaborators have explored and expressed gender throughout the years. It was a beautifully inclusive, encouraging spectacle. If history is a guide, the social and artistic ramifications of her performance will extend long after her tour.

Madonna’s 1985 Virgin Tour, her debut, included only 40 shows in North America and grossed about $5 million. But its impact on young lives is immeasurable. The young women and girls in her audience were on the cusp of unleashing their sexual selves and embracing their independence, which is what made them so terrifying to a broader society intent on keeping them polite, passive and manageable.

Madonna’s message to her young audience was: Embrace your power, dream big and dare to be your own damned self. That message would resonate through a generation and across the globe, as aspiring Madonnas grew up to be politicians, lawyers, doctors, teachers, members of the armed forces, Third Wave feminists, riot grrrls and pop stars themselves.

Madonna was, in fact, the lead author of the female pop star playbook, and she continues to write the unexplored and perilous back end of it while artists like Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish adapt the front end and more established stars like Beyoncé and Taylor Swift refine what’s possible in the middle. Madonna’s continuous career represents a universe of possibility for their own, despite the entertainment industry’s willingness to jettison midcareer women in favor of artists with younger faces and bodies.

But for women not named Madonna (or Beyoncé or Taylor Swift), growing older and maturing in public is much more fraught. Older men are considered wise, but older women are often ignored or discounted. Thanks to the intervention of the pharmaceutical industry, men are encouraged to have an active sex life into their 80s. The idea of older women having sex remains, for many, repellent.

Madonna has challenged our notions of what a woman should do and be on all those counts: She chooses to age as she sees fit, she says what she believes loudly and forcefully, and she is as proudly sexual as she was in 1985.

With her Celebration Tour, Madonna demonstrated night after night for six months that an older woman can exhibit power and strength — joyfully, generously and defiantly. Her glorious performance was perhaps even sweeter when we recall that hip and knee injuries disrupted her Madame X tour four years ago and a bacterial infection threatened not only the Celebration Tour but also Madonna’s life.

Forty years ago, Madonna showed audiences, particularly girls and women, that they could mute the killjoy chorus keeping them from self-realization. On the Celebration Tour, Madonna doubled down on this idea, encouraging fans to follow their hearts, minds and inner freaks by both being herself onstage and employing diverse and talented dancers to carry that message in their own convincing and resonant ways.

If this were the last tour of Madonna’s career — and we sincerely hope it was not — she would retire as the most influential female pop star of all time, a legitimate legend who wowed audiences, defied expectations and broke records. Having served more than 40 years in the public eye, she could take a holiday, take some time to celebrate. It would be, it would be so nice.

Grayson Murray dies at age 30 a day after withdrawing from Colonial, PGA Tour says

Grayson Murray.

Grayson Murray, a two-time PGA Tour winner, died Saturday just one day after he withdrew from the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial, the PGA Tour announced in a statement.

Murray was 30 years old.

There were no immediate details released regarding manner or circumstances of his death.

“We were devastated to learn — and are heartbroken to share — that PGA TOUR player Grayson Murray passed away this morning. I am at a loss for words,” PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said in the statement.

“The PGA TOUR is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same,” Monahan continued. “We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.”

Murray’s management company, GSE Worldwide, also confirmed his death and said it was heartbroken.

“We will hold off on commenting until we learn further details, but out heart aches for his family, his friends and all who loved him during this very difficult time,” GSE said in a statement.

Monahan said he spoke to Murray’s parents to offer condolences. During that conversation, he said, Murray’s parents “asked that we continue with tournament play.”

“They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so,” Monahan said. “As difficult as it will be, we want to respect their wishes.”

Monahan said in the PGA Tour statement that grief counselors will be available at this week’s PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour events.

Monahan also said he is en route to the Charles Schwab Challenge, which is held in Fort Worth, Texas.

Murray first hit the golf scene at age 16, and finished off his rookie season in the pros with a win at the Nationwide Children’s, earning him second place on the Korn Ferry Tour money list and full status on the PGA Tour in 2017.

He won the Barbasol Championship in 2017 at the age of 24, securing a two-year exemption through the 2019 PGA Tour season.

After struggling on the PGA Tour the next few seasons, Murray found success yet again on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2023, picking up wins at the AdventHealth Championship in Kansas City and the Simmons Bank Open outside of Nashville, Tennessee. He finished fourth on the tour and earned a spot back on the tour for the next season.

Murray, who had dealt with alcohol and mental health issues in the past, made a massive turnaround this year and won the Sony Open, hitting wedge to 3 feet for birdie on the final hole to get into a playoff and winning it with a 40-foot putt.
