Golfer Grayson Murray died by suicide, family confirms
Pro golfer Grayson Murray’s family has confirmed he died by suicide after news of his death shocked the sports community over the weekend.
Murray, a two-time PGA Tour winner, died Saturday , the day after he withdrew from the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas. He was 30 years old.
His parents, Eric and Terry Murray, s aid in a statement Sunday that “life wasn’t always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now.”
“We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone,” they wrote. “It’s surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but that we also have to acknowledge it to the world. It’s a nightmare.”
Murray, who gained full status on the PGA Tour in 2017, won the Barbasol Championship that year at age 23.
Last year, he scored two wins on the Korn Ferry Tour, at the AdventHealth Championship in Kansas City, Missouri, and the Simmons Bank Open outside Nashville, Tennessee.
Murray went on to win the Sony Open in Hawaii this year — hitting a wedge shot to 3 feet for birdie on the final hole to get into a playoff and winning it with a 40-foot putt.
Murray had been open about having struggled with alcoholism and mental health. At a news conference after he won the Sony Open in January, he told reporters that he used to drink during tournament weeks and that alcohol was his “outlet.”
“That was over seven years ago, and I’m a different man now,” he said. “And I would not be in this position right now today if I didn’t put that drink down eight months ago.”
Murray also shared that he struggled with anxiety and depression, which he said “stemmed a lot from alcohol use,” and that he suffered from self-esteem issues. But his life changed, he said, when he stopped “trying to fight it alone” and decided to ask for help.
“There were days where I didn’t want to get out of bed. I just thought I was a failure. I always looked at myself as a failure. I thought I had a lot of talent that was just a waste of talent,” he said. “And it was a bad place, but like I said, you have to have courage. You have to have the willingness to keep going. And lo and behold, that’s what I did.”
In their statement, his parents wrote: “We have so many questions that have no answers. But one. Was Grayson loved? The answer is yes. By us, his brother Cameron, his sister Erica, all of his extended family, by his friends, by his fellow players and — it seems — by many of you who are reading this. He was loved and he will be missed.”
PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan also s aid in a s tatement Saturday that he was “devastated” to learn of Murray’s death that morning.
“The PGA TOUR is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same,” he said. “We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.”
Grief counselors will be available at this week’s PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour events, the news release said.

Updated on: May 27, 2024 / 1:35 AM EDT / CBS News
The family of pro golfer Grayson Murray, the 30-year-old whose death was announced on Saturday, said in a statement Sunday that he died by suicide.
The PGA Tour released a statement on behalf of Eric and Terry Murray, the golfer's parents, who said they "have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone."
"It's surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but that we also have to acknowledge it to the world. It's a nightmare," the statement said, adding: "He was loved and he will be missed."
The Murrays thanked the PGA Tour and the golf community for its outpouring of support.
"Life wasn't always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now," they said.
They asked for privacy and asked people to honor their son by being kind to one another.
"If that becomes his legacy, we could ask for nothing else," the statement said.
The PGA Tour announced on Saturday that the two-time tour winner had died. CBS Sports reported he had withdrawn from the second round of the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth.
"I am at a loss for words," PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said. "The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones."
PGA officials said grief counselors will be made available at all venues this week.
Murray won his second PGA TOUR title at this year's Sony Open in Hawaii. He played golf at Wake Forest University, East Carolina University and Arizona State University before turning professional. He won his first title at the 2017 Barbasol Championship when he was 23 years old.

Professional golfer Grayson Murray, 30, dies by suicide after withdrawing from Charles Schwab Challenge
Murray was a two-time winner on the pga tour.
Professional golfer Grayson Murray has died. He was 30 years old. Murray's death comes after he withdrew Friday during the second round of the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge, citing an illness.
A day after Murray's death rocked the larger sporting world, his parents announced in a statement through the PGA Tour that he died by suicide.
"We would like to thank the PGA Tour and the entire world of golf for the outpouring of support," Eric and Terry Murray said. "Life wasn't always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now."
An undeniable talent, Murray was the second-youngest golfer in history to make the cut on the Korn Ferry Tour before turning eventually pro in 2015. He bounced up and down between the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour over the course of his career, becoming a polarizing figure at times because of frequent outbursts on the course.
Still, his potential consistently flashed as he won twice on the PGA Tour -- capturing the 2017 Barbasol Championship and 2024 Sony Open in Hawaii -- and three times on the Korn Ferry Tour.
When he won the Sony Open, it seemed as if Murray had turned a corner after battling anxiety, depression and alcohol abuse throughout his young career. He said in January that he had been sober since early 2023. He also shared that he was unprepared for life as a pro when he first got out of college and began traveling.
"Yes, I would drink during tournament weeks," Murray said after his Sony Open win. "It was my outlet. I thought I was invincible coming out here as a 22-year-old, winning as a rookie, played three days hungover when I won. Best thing and worst thing that ever happened to me was winning my rookie year -- but also feeling like I was invincible."
Murray cited his faith and his fiancee as helping ground him, and he spoke about his road to recovery.
"It took me a long time to get to this point," he said. "… I'm a different man now. I would not be in this position right now today if I didn't put that drink down eight months ago."
Murray added: "People who don't know me, I'll have to show it through my actions, and they'll get back on Grayson's side. My demeanor is so much better. It's really a lot of fun now. I really don't live and die by a golf shot anymore. I'm not going to sit here and say it's going to be all glory and roses, but it's going to be a lot better."
The PGA Tour considered postponing play at the Charles Schwab Challenge as the golf world was rocked by Murray's death . However, his parents insisted the tournament continue as scheduled as it was what their son would have wanted.
"We were devastated to learn -- and are heartbroken to share -- that PGA Tour player Grayson Murray passed away this morning. I am at a loss for words," said PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan in a Saturday statement. "The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.
"I reached out to Grayson's parents to offer our deepest condolences, and during that conversation, they asked that we continue with tournament play. They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so. As difficult as it will be, we want to respect their wishes."
A native of Raleigh, North Carolina, Murray attended Wake Forest, East Carolina and Arizona State where he played golf before turning pro. In 141 career PGA Tour starts, Murray had 10 top-10 finishes, including those two victories.
The PGA Tour has sent grief counselors to both tournament sites this week and made others available virtually for its members.

The parents of professional golfer Grayson Murray on Sunday said the two-time PGA Tour winner died by suicide Saturday morning.
"We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone," Eric and Terry Murray said in a statement. "It's surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but that we also have to acknowledge it to the world. It's a nightmare.
"... Life wasn't always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now."
Grayson Murray, 30, withdrew from the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial after the 16th hole of Friday's second round in Fort Worth, Texas. The PGA Tour cited the reason as illness.
"We have so many questions that have no answers. But one. Was Grayson loved? The answer is yes," his parents said in their statement. "By us, his brother Cameron, his sister Erica, all of his extended family, by his friends, by his fellow players and -- it seems -- by many of you who are reading this. He was loved and he will be missed.
"We would like to thank the PGA Tour and the entire world of golf for the outpouring of support. Please respect our privacy as we work through this incredible tragedy, and please honor Grayson by being kind to one another. If that becomes his legacy, we could ask for nothing else."
Many players competing at Colonial on Sunday wore black-and-red pins on their caps in honor of Murray. Those are the colors of the Carolina Hurricanes , his favorite NHL team.
"Obviously it was pretty difficult to come play golf," said Scottie Scheffler , who tied for second at Colonial. "But like his parents said, he would have wanted the tournament to continue."
Murray spoke about alcohol and mental health in the past, saying he used to drink during tournament weeks as a rookie because he knew he had talent and believed he was invincible. He made a massive turnaround this year and won the Sony Open, hitting a wedge to 3 feet for birdie on the final hole to get into a playoff and winning it with a 40-foot putt.
"It took me a long time to get to this point," Murray said in January. "That was seven years ago, over seven years ago. I'm a different man now. I would not be in this position right now today if I didn't put that drink down eight months ago."
He also won the Barbasol Championship as a 22-year-old PGA Tour rookie in 2017.
Murray, who was No. 58 in the world ranking, was coming off a tie for 43rd in the PGA Championship last week at Valhalla. He also made the cut in his Masters debut, finishing 51st, and was in the field for next month's U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2.
Murray, who grew up in North Carolina, was among the most talented juniors in the country. He won the prestigious Junior World championship in San Diego three straight years and earned the Arnold Palmer Scholarship at Wake Forest.
His first coach was Ted Kiegiel in North Carolina, who like so many others was devastated.
"Words cannot express the tragedy of this moment," Kiegiel said in a statement sent to The Associated Press. "Grayson came from something that was ordinary and made it EXTRAORDINARY. ... He burned bright for the 30 years he gave us."
Murray wound up going to three colleges, lastly at Arizona State.
Murray said when he won the Sony Open in January that he had been sober for eight months, was engaged to be married and believed his best golf was ahead of him. He was appointed to the PGA Tour's 16-member player advisory council the same month.
PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan, who flew to Texas on Saturday, said grief counselors were on site at the PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour event.
"To be in the locker room, to see the devastation on the faces of every player that's coming in, it's really difficult to see. And really just profound," Monahan said during the CBS broadcast Saturday.
"Grayson was a remarkable player on the PGA Tour, but he was a very courageous man, as well. And I've always loved that about him, and I know that the locker room is filled with people that really will take that away when they think about Grayson."
Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
Grayson Murray, 2-time PGA Tour winner, died by suicide, family says
Grayson Murray, a two-time winner on the PGA Tour , died by suicide Saturday morning, his family said in a statement released through the tour.
“We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone,” his parents, Eric and Terry Murray, said in the statement released Sunday. “It’s surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but that we also have to acknowledge it to the world. On Friday, Murray withdrew from the second round of the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, citing an illness. He had finished all but the final two holes in the round.
“Life wasn’t always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now,” the Murray family said. “Please respect our privacy as we work through this incredible tragedy, and please honor Grayson by being kind to one another. If that becomes his legacy, we could ask for nothing else.”

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said that he gave Murray’s family the option of asking for the remainder of the tournament to be canceled, but they insisted Murray would want it to continue. Instead, Monahan flew to Fort Worth and several players spoke emotionally about Murray’s death.
“We all want to beat each other. And then something like this happens and you realize we’re all just humans,” Peter Malnati said, fighting back tears, on the CBS broadcast. “It’s a really hard day.
“You look at Grayson and you see him. Someone who has visibly outwardly struggled in the past. And he’s been open about it. You see him kind of get his life back to a place where he’s feeling good about things. It’s just so sad.”
Murray had publicly battled alcoholism and mental health issues, but he returned to form, earned his PGA Tour card and won the Sony Open in Hawaii in January . He made the cut at both the Masters and the PGA Championship the last two months. He was ranked as the No. 58 player in the world by the Official World Golf Ranking.
“I think I first met Grayson at my home club when Grayson was probably 8 years old, maybe 9. He was the first winner of the Webb Simpson Challenge Junior Tournament that I’ve had for 14 years,” Webb Simpson said. “So, when you hear news like that over the phone you don’t think it’s real at first, and you know, you hear the emotion coming from our swing coach and then you realize it’s real. But I know that his mom was with him during the Wells Fargo Championship and I think they were hanging out together, and I loved those two days we got together. So I’m super thankful for getting some good time with him before the bad news of today.”
Monahan said it was something he had spoken directly to Murray about his mental health issues over the past three years. “He had very strong opinions, you know, and he challenged us, and I found that to be very helpful because you can learn a lot when people speak their truth in the way that he did,” Monahan said.
If you or someone you know is having thoughts of suicide, call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, or contact the Crisis Text Line by texting TALK to 741741.
