For reference, you can't build hotels at the start - you need to the Smart home tech. Likewise the Low G entertainment building requires the medium dome tech. Click to expand...

Surviving Mars Tourist Update

Surviving Mars developer, Haemimont Games, recently released a new update that added new features and made some changes to the game. The RC Safari is the latest addition introduced by the free tourism update. This feature lets players create sightseeing tours for tourists visiting your colony. You can order it from Earth or build it yourself via a research type. To provide better services, new buildings like Hotel and Low-G Amusement Park are now available, thanks to the update, all of which can help increase their satisfaction level.

A small adjustment has been applied to the Tourist Trap challenge, along with 20 tourist applications spawned at the start of the challenge.

Surviving Mars Tourism Update

Changes to Tourists

  • Tourists have a new Satisfaction stat, which tracks how much each tourist is enjoying their holiday.
  • Tourists no longer pay 10M funding upon arrival. Instead, they pay funds when departing from Mars based on how much they liked their holiday, shown in the Satisfaction stat, rated between 1 and 5 stars.
  • Tourists now board any nearby rocket when they are looking to go home (instead of only boarding rockets that just landed).

New Feature: RC Safari

  • The new RC Safari allows you to create sightseeing tours around your colony for tourists to enjoy.
  • Set waypoints near domes, wonders, vistas, rock formations, and many other sights to increase the satisfaction bonus tourists get from the safari.
  • Order the new RC Safari from earth, or complete the Rover Printing research to build these yourself.

New Tourist Buildings

  • Hotel: Provide tourists a luxurious place to stay on Mars; spending the night increases their Satisfaction. Hotels can be built after completing the Smart Homes research.
  • Low-G Amusement Park: Provide tourists with the best ways to experience the low gravity environment. Visiting tourists get an extra bonus to their Satisfaction.

Other changes

  • Adjusted the deadlines for the Tourist Trap challenge, which now also gives 20 tourist applicants at the start.

In-Dome Building Pack CCP

  • Smart Apartments: Apartments that provide the same luxuries as smart homes.
  • Senior Residence: A lovely place for your senior residents to retire.
  • Large Nursery: A larger version of the nursery, able to house more children.
  • Medical Post: For when you need a smaller infirmary in the area.
  • Hospital: A larger, more relaxing version of the infirmary. It also comes with the exclusive Remote Medic upgrade, which reduces the number of colonists required per shift.
  • Security Post: A more compact version of the Security Station.
  • TV Studio Workshop: A new workshop building that also generates funding.
  • School Spire: Build the school as a spire building. It comes with the exclusive Superior Education upgrade, which has a small change to give the Genius trait.
  • 2 new colony logos: Colonization Effort, Red Target

NASA unveils never-before-seen video from Mars rover landing on the red planet

By William Harwood

February 23, 2021 / 6:52 AM EST / CBS News

After a long weekend without any updates or imagery from the Perseverance Mars rover , NASA released a spectacular bounty of video Monday, including never-before-seen footage capturing the  hair-raising descent to the surface of the red planet.

While previous landers captured still images during descent that later were stitched together to form a sort of stop-action movie, Perseverance was equipped with "ruggedized" off-the-shelf video cameras to shoot high-resolution imagery of the rover's plunge to landing on the floor of Jezero Crater .

Over the weekend, engineers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, where Perseverance was built, downlinked 30 gigabytes of data from the rover, including 23,000 images and video frames. That allowed them to give the public a bird's eye view of a landing on Mars.

"This is the first time we've been able to actually capture an event like the landing of a spacecraft on Mars," said JPL Director Michael Watkins. "We will learn something by looking at the performance of the vehicle in these videos. But a lot of it is also to bring you along on our journey, our touchdown to Mars, and of course, our surface mission as well. These are really amazing videos."

022221-rover1.jpg

One camera mounted on the back of Perseverance's flying saucer-like aeroshell captured crystal-clear views of the spacecraft's 70.5-foot-wide parachute unfurling in the supersonic slipstream, inflating in a half second to act as a 60,000-pound brake, slowing the craft from just under 1,000 mph to a more sedate 200 mph.

Equally spectacular views looking down showed the approaching ground below as the 1-ton rover swayed gently under the parachute. The rover then fell free and its rocket powered backpack fired up, guiding the craft to a hazard-free landing site it selected earlier.

As the backpack lowered Perseverance to the surface, exhaust plumes from the descent vehicle's eight engines kicked up swirling clouds of dust that briefly obscured the lander. Then, with its wheels on the ground, the support cables were cut and a camera on Perseverance showed the backpack lifting away and flying out of sight.

022221-uplook2.jpg

Along with the unprecedented video, NASA also released more photos from the surface showing the rover's landing site in Jezero Crater, which once held a 28-mile-wide lake fed by a river that deposited sediments in a broad delta. Cliffs marking the edge of that delta some 1.2 miles away to the northwest can be clearly seen by Perseverance's cameras.

022221-pano.jpg

Deputy project manager Matt Wallace said the idea to put video cameras on board to document the rover's entry, descent and landing came after he bought his daughter a small sports camera that she wore in a harness while practicing gymnastics.

"She did a back flip, and I don't know about you, but I cannot do a back flip," he said. "But when she showed me the video ... I had a glimpse into what it would be like if I could do a back flip. And that was the moment that inspired a phone call to my friend (Perseverance camera engineer) Dave Grohl, and that's what led to this system."

Along with 25 cameras, the rover also carries two microphones. One failed to work during descent, but the other captured the sounds of the Martian wind blowing past. NASA released a snippet of audio picked up by the rover's microphone — the first sound ever recorded on another planet.

Now that you’ve seen Mars, hear it. Grab some headphones and listen to the first sounds captured by one of my microphones. 🎧 https://t.co/JswvAWC2IP #CountdownToMars — NASA's Perseverance Mars Rover (@NASAPersevere) February 22, 2021

Launched last July, Perseverance reached Mars on Thursday, February 18, plunging into the atmosphere for a seven-minute descent.

The river and the lake it fed some 3.5 billion years ago are long gone, but scientists say remnants of past microbial life, if such life existed, may preserved in lakebed deposits. Perseverance is the first lander sent to Mars specifically to look for such "biosignatures" and to cache soil and rock samples for eventual return to Earth.

Perseverance's descent, like that of the Curiosity rover before it, is known as "seven minutes of terror" because of the extreme entry environment and the myriad events that must happen on time and without intervention from Earth to complete a successful landing.

022221-chutes1.jpg

Despite promises before landing that "raw" images from the rover's hazard avoidance cameras and others would be posted as they came in, less than half a dozen had been released by Friday evening and none showed up over the weekend.

That touched off concern among space enthusiasts, but Thomas Zurbuchen, NASA's science director, tweeted Sunday the focus was on downloading on-board video and data about the health of the rover's systems.

"Since the @NASAPersevere landing, we've been prioritizing two types of data: first-of-its-kind footage from the rover's entry, descent & landing. And, health & safety data for the rover & its subsystems," he tweeted.

He later added: "I am so proud of this @NASAPersevere team for working so hard and diligently and for being able to deliver things to us ahead of schedule because they know the intense public interest."

Great Marsh

Sinnoh Pastoria City Map.png

The Great Marsh (Japanese: 大湿原 Great Marsh ) is an area located in Pastoria City . It is Sinnoh 's Safari Zone and contains some Pokémon that cannot be found anywhere else in Sinnoh. It is filled with marshy areas , which, unlike normal marsh tiles, have tall grass inhabited by wild Pokémon .

  • 1.1 Capturing Pokémon
  • 1.2 Changing Pokémon
  • 3 Base flee rates
  • 4.1 Entrance
  • 5.1.1 All areas

Functioning

Capturing pokémon.

Much like other Pokémon preserves in Kanto and Hoenn , the Great Marsh features a Safari Game in which Trainers pay $ 500 for 30 Safari Balls and a limited number of steps (500) to catch all the Pokémon they can.

The mechanics are similar to other Safari Zones: when a wild Pokémon appears, the player may not send out any Pokémon to battle it, but must instead try to catch the Pokémon without harming it. The wild Pokémon may choose to flee the battle at any time, thus, catching a Pokémon in the Great Marsh requires mainly luck.

There are four options shown in the battle screen:

  • Throw a Safari Ball - Throws a Safari Ball in possibility of capture. It is much the same as throwing a Poké Ball in an average Pokémon battle.
  • Throw bait - Throwing bait makes a Pokémon easier to catch, but makes it more likely to flee from battle. (Increases catch rate and flee rate by one stage each)
  • Throw mud - Throwing mud does the reverse of throwing bait, making the Pokémon harder to catch, but making the Pokémon less likely to flee from battle. (Decreases catch rate and flee rate by one stage each)
  • Run from battle - Like in an average Pokémon battle, running away from a Pokémon will cause the battle to end.

Similar to the issue in Pal Park , if the player has an Arceus in the front of their party, holding a Plate, and initiates a battle, the game will freeze .

The area was redesigned in Pokémon Platinum to feature slightly upgraded graphics that allow the player to distinguish between deep and shallow mud. The park is still divided into six areas, but the individual areas have slightly different layouts.

Changing Pokémon

safari i mars

Some Pokémon will not always appear in the Great Marsh. Every day, a random Pokémon from a set list will be chosen by the game to appear in each area of the marsh, in addition to the Pokémon that can always be found there. Each possible Pokémon has a different chance of being chosen, but whichever one is chosen has a 10% encounter rate in its area. The same Pokémon can be chosen to appear in multiple areas on the same day, and, prior to obtaining the National Pokédex , some of the Pokémon that can be chosen can already be encountered anyway. After obtaining the National Pokédex , the list of changing Pokémon changes.

The only way to tell which changing Pokémon is available in each area for the day is to use the lookout upstairs from the entrance. For $ 100, the player can get a brief glimpse of the Great Marsh, showing certain Pokémon in certain areas of the marsh. In each slide, a part of the park will appear with a Pokémon in the center of the slide that can be found in that area. However, the Pokémon that are shown are completely random, meaning that it is possible for the player to only see Pokémon that can always be found in each area anyway. Record mixing also changes the changing Pokémon of the day in the Great Marsh so that all players mixing records have the same Pokémon on the same day.

As with previous Safari Zones, Pokémon are made easier and harder to catch by modifying their catch rates . An escape rate is also given for each Pokémon that appears in the Great Marsh. The escape rates for Pokémon are the same for all Generation IV games, except that those who do not appear in the Great Marsh or the Johto Safari Zone do not have their escape rates defined in the relevant games.

At the start of an encounter, both rates are set to their species defaults. Throwing Bait will increase the catch rate by one stage, but will also have a 90% chance of increasing the escape rate by one stage. Conversely, throwing Mud will decrease the escape rate by one stage, but will also have a 90% chance of decreasing the catch rate by one stage. When bait is thrown and the flee stage is not increased the message "... is busy eating!" will be displayed. When mud is thrown and the catch stage is not decreased the message "... is beside itself with anger!" will be displayed. Stages for catch rates and escape rates work identically to stat stages : they may not be raised above +6 or below -6, where 0 is the starting stage. The stage multipliers applied to the catch rates and escape rates are also identical to that of stat stages.

At the end of each turn, a random number between 0 and 254 (inclusive) is generated, and if it is less than the or equal to the modified escape rate, the Pokémon escapes.

Due to a programming error, Whiscash does not have a flee rate programmed into the game, and thus only has a 1/255 chance to flee (if the generated random number is 0).

Statistically, exclusively throwing Safari Balls provides the best chance of catching every Pokémon in the Great Marsh.

Base flee rates

These are the base flee rates. The Pokémon actual chance of fleeing each turn is affected by bait and mud.

Generation IV

The following encounters are used for Surfing and fishing in all areas where they are possible.

Areas 1 and 2

Areas 3 and 4.

The "rates" below are the chances for that Pokémon to be selected to appear in an area. All of these Pokémon will appear with a 10% encounter rate within the Great Marsh, or a 10% greater rate if they were already present. In Diamond and Pearl, the changing Pokémon's encounter rate is compensated (so that all encounter rates sum to 100%) by lowering the encounter rate of Marill and Quagsire in the same area (as seen above) by 5% each, while in Platinum, it is compensated by lowering the encounter rate of Wooper by 10%. The way this works in the games, this means that if Wooper is selected as the changing Pokémon in Platinum, there is no change to the tables shown above.

Generation VIII

The "rates" below are the chances for that Pokémon to be selected to appear in an area. All of these Pokémon will appear with a 10% encounter rate within the Great Marsh, or a 10% greater rate if they were already present. The changing Pokémon's encounter rate is compensated (so that all encounter rates sum to 100%) by lowering the encounter rate of Marill and Quagsire in the same area (as seen above) by 5% each.

In the anime

As a boy, James was exploring the Great Marsh when he found a Carnivine stuck in the mud, struggling to get free. James pulled it out and they became friends ever since. During Team Rocket 's journey through Sinnoh, Carnivine traveled with James.

Ash , Dawn , and Brock visited the Great Marsh in Cream of the Croagunk Crop! , in which Brock and his Croagunk participated in the Pastoria Croagunk Festival .

In A Crasher Course in Power! , Team Rocket were shown relaxing in the Great Marsh.

In the manga

Pokémon Adventures

Diamond & pearl arc.

In A Skuffle with Skorupi , Diamond , Pearl and Platinum came here after Crasher Wake 's assistant recommended Platinum to get a Grass-type Pokémon before challenging the Gym Leader . Platinum tried to catch various Pokémon, like Budew and Skorupi , with no success. At some point, the group got stuck in the mud. While they tried to struggle themselves free, a wild Carnivine attacked Chatler and Lax , who fought it and won. Chimler saved Platinum from drowning in the mud, after which the group left the Great Marsh empty-handed.

The following is a list of cards related to mentioning or featuring the Great Marsh in the Pokémon Trading Card Game .

  • In Diamond and Pearl, a man in the Great Marsh incorrectly states that both bait and mud make Pokémon more likely to run but easier to catch.
  • If the player uses the walk through walls cheat to enter the Great Marsh, the changing Pokémon won't appear.
  • If the player encounters a Pokémon while they are sunken in deep mud, a glitch exists where upon exiting the battle, it will seem that the player is still "stuck", despite being able to move around normally. The effects of this glitch are most obvious when the player attempts to move to a tile with dry land after performing the glitch.
  • Despite the Galactic Bomb's successful detonation, no damage caused by it can be found at the Great Marsh.

An orbiter captured images of 'spiders' on Mars in Inca City. But what is it, really?

The mars orbiter images appear to suggest that the red planet has succumbed to an infestation of creepy crawlies, but what's really going on has to do with a carbon dioxide eruption..

safari i mars

One look at recent images released by the European Space Agency may cause you to wonder if spiders are on the cusp of bursting forth onto the Martian surface .

But arachnophobes have nothing to fear, even if the Mars orbiter images appear to suggest that the Red Planet has succumbed to an infestation of creepy crawlies. Rather, a strange chemical reaction recently captured by European Space Agency probes is to blame for the spider-like feature spotted at a formation known as Inca City in Mars' southern polar region.

As the ESA explained , the images comprised of data gathered Feb. 27 by the Mars Express orbiter show clustered dots that formed due to seasonal eruptions of carbon dioxide gas.

It's just the latest instance in which this distinctive phenomenon has been documented. ESA's ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter has also captured visual evidence of the spidering effect, as have NASA spacecrafts.

Here's what to know about it.

What to know about SLIM: Japan's lunar lander still powers away 3 months later

What are the 'spider' formations really?

The features known as "spiders" form when the weather starts to warm during the Martian springtime.

As the sunshine falls on layers of carbon dioxide deposited over the dark winter months, the ice begins to melt and the warmth causes the lowest layers of ice to turn to gas. The carbon dioxide gas warms and builds up before eventually breaking through slabs of overlying ice, dragging dark dust with it to the surface that shatters through like a geyser.

When the dust settles back down, it etches patterns into the surface and beneath the ice that manifest as dark blotches resembling the spindly legs and bodies of spiders.

The process is unlike anything seen on Earth.

ESA's Mars Express orbiter captures latest sign of 'spiders'

The latest images of the formations, which are channels of gas measuring 0.03 to 0.6 miles across, were most recently captured by ESA's Mars Express orbiter, which arrived at the planet in 2003.

The formation of dark spots indicating the presence of "spiders" was spotted in Inca City, a region nicknamed for its resemblance to the Inca Ruins of Earth.

Another of ESA’s Mars explorers, the  ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter  (TGO), has previously imaged the spiders’ tendril-like patterns especially clearly in 2020 in a nearby region. While the Mars Express view shows the dark spots on the surface, the TGO perspective captured the web-like channels carved into the ice below.

NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter also captured images in 2018 showing the "spiders" beginning to emerge from the landscape.

In the Mars Express image, the dark spots can be seen creeping across the towering hills and expansive plateaus of the mysterious Inca City discovered in 1972 by  NASA’s Mariner 9 probe . While scientists aren't exactly sure how the ridges and walls formations of Inca City came to be, it's theorized to be the remnants of sand dunes turned to stone.

In 2002, NASA's Mars Orbiter revealed  that Inca City is part of a large circle approximately 53 miles wide – suggesting the formation is the result of a space rock crashing into the surface and creating a crater. Faults that rippled through the surrounding plain could have filled with rising lava that has since worn away, revealing a formation resembling ancient ruins.

The Big 5 and more - giraffes, zebras, hippos, lions with their families, cheetahs and hundreds of wildebeests - no shortage of amazing game sightings every day...

The best way of understanding what the Masai Mara and its conservancies are about is by seeing some thrilling footage from the area. Watch this video to experience Kenya's Masai Mara, its splendour and to meet some of our celebrity wildlife species.

Be careful, after watching this video you can be sure that you want to travel to Kenya. Today.

We saw 8 lions in one drive, and a hippo pod being circled by a dozen crocodiles that launched into the water, trying to get the baby hippos in the center of the pod. Wow!
I was fortunate that when I was recently in the Mara North Conservancy there were so few tourists. I saw plenty of wildlife. The sightings of big cats were especially good.
The Mara Triangle is the most beautiful, lush area of the Masai Mara. Loads of elephants and all types of wildlife without all the land cruiser traffic found in other areas of the Mara.

Botsi Unveils Spectacular “Safari on Mars” Collection

  • December 5, 2023

Inspired by Petra City, the fashion label launched this incredible new collection during an elegant evening of style and class at the stunning Eden by Belcanto .

Botsi, the revolutionary fashion label known for its chic, stylish, and alluring designs, marked a momentous occasion in its history with the exclusive launch of its “Safari on Mars” collection. The highly anticipated event took place on Thursday, November 30th, at the enchanting Eden by Belcanto, nestled within the rooftop confines of the prestigious Dubai Opera. An enviable occasion, onlookers got a glimpse of the brand’s newest collection, whilst also discovering the inspiration behind the sensational outfits.

Renowned presenter, host, and emcee, Rosemin Manji, Founder of RR&CO Luxury and a distinguished luxury events curator, played host for the evening. Renowned as one of the most influential figures in the world of fashion, Rosemin was the perfect person to showcase the sheer elegance of this magnificent collection. The event welcomed approximately 100 attendees, comprising industry insiders, fashion enthusiasts, and notable personalities.

The “Safari on Mars” collection, inspired by the enigmatic whispers of stone and steeped in the historical echoes of ancient Al-Khanzeh, pays homage to the rich cultural tapestry of the famed archaeological site. Drawing inspiration from Petra in Jordan and its architectural marvels, this collection captivates the essence of timeless beauty and human ingenuity. The wonder of these ancient buildings, with their intricate carvings and geometric patterns, find their way into the collection’s designs.

Victoriya Bahl, the visionary founder of Botsi, shared her inspiration behind the collection, stating, “Relocating to the Middle East introduced me to a diverse array of people, which proved to be a fascinating experience. Eager to explore the region, I embarked on journeys to various Middle Eastern cities. During a conversation, a friend shared captivating images of Jordan, particularly the enchanting Petra. Intrigued, I was inspired to personally venture to Jordan and Petra. Upon arriving, the allure of the sunset, mountains, and architecture captivated me, sparking the inception of my Safari on Mars collection.”

The “Safari on Mars” collection weaves together the captivating narratives of Al-Khanzeh and Petra, infusing the warm hues of sandstone and terracotta tones found in the heart of these ancient cities. Fabrics such as luxurious silks, knits, and plant-based ultra-suede meticulously emulate the textures of the rock-cut architecture, offering a sensory experience that transports wearers through time and history.

Each ensemble in this collection showcases a fusion of versatile elements – from the distinctive Botsi face print to the incorporation of plant-based ultra-suede and the interplay of silk yarn with sting fabric. The result is an exquisite array of garments that redefine classic styles, celebrate timeless beauty, and exude a contemporary edge.

“More than just an assemblage of garments, this collection embodies the celebration of nuanced beauty found in simplicity and a well-curated palette,” expressed Bahl. “It’s an invitation to explore the subtleties of colours and textures while embracing individuality and timeless allure.”

Botsi, born and developed in Dubai, stands as a beacon of change in the realm of ready-to-wear fashion. With a commitment to responsible production, ethical resourcing, and a dedication to empowering women, Botsi continues to revolutionise the industry while crafting an experience that transcends fashion.

Strange cluster of 'spiders' spotted in 'Inca City' on Mars (photo)

April showers bring May flowers on Earth — but on Mars, spring brings surface "spiders.

A satellite photo shows lots of small, black spider-like features on Mars.

Seasonal, spider-like features have been spotted sprouting through cracks in Mars' surface.

The European Space Agency's Mars Express orbiter captured new images of small, dark features that resemble spiders scuttling across the Martian region known as Inca City near the Red Planet 's south pole.

This phenomenon appears when spring sunlight warms layers of carbon dioxide deposited during the dark Martian winter. In turn, carbon dioxide ice in the bottom layer turns into gas, which builds up and eventually breaks through overlying ice up to 3.3 feet (1 meter) thick, according to a statement from ESA.

Related: Thousands of strange white rocks found on Mars. Will they ever be brought to Earth?

The released gas carries dark dust from the underlying ground upward, ultimately forcing the dust to explode out of the top ice layers like water from a geyser before settling on the surface. This creates the cracked, spidery formations measuring 0.03 to 0.6 miles (45 meters to 1 kilometer) across.

Mars' Inca City, formally known as Angustus Labyrinthus, exhibits a linear, almost geometric network of ridges like the Inca ruins on Earth. It is part of a circular feature approximately 53 miles (86 km) wide, suggesting it may be an impact crater with ridges formed by lava rising through the fractured Martian crust and eroding over time.

"We're still not sure exactly how Inca City formed," ESA officials said in the statement. "It could be that sand dunes have turned to stone over time. Perhaps material such as magma or sand is seeping through fractured sheets of martian rock. Or, the ridges could be 'eskers,' winding structures related to glaciers."

The most recent images of Inca City were taken by Mars Express ' High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on Feb. 27, 2024, during the autumn season on Mars. The Cassis (Color and Stereo Surface Imaging System) instrument aboard ESA's ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter previously documented the same spider-like features near Mars’ south pole on Oct. 4, 2020. The next Martian spring equinox will be on November 12, 2024.

New AI Features Reportedly Coming to Safari in iOS 18

Safari will gain a series of AI-powered features and UI enhancements in iOS 18 , AppleInsider reports .

safari icon blue banner

  • An "Intelligent Search" browser assistant tool that leverages Apple's on-device AI technology to identify key topics and phrases on webpages for summarization purposes.
  • A "Web Eraser" tool that allows users to remove unwanted portions of webpages easily. Erasure is persistent, remaining even when revisiting a site unless changes are reverted.
  • A new, quick-access menu emerging from the address bar that consolidates page tools, bringing over some functions that currently sit in the Share Sheet and placing them alongside the new tools.

The iPadOS and macOS versions of Safari are also expected to align further. These new features are purportedly undergoing evaluation alongside internal builds of ‌iOS 18‌ and macOS 15 ahead of their unveiling at Apple's Worldwide Developer's Conference (WWDC) in June. Earlier this month, backend code on Apple's servers suggested that a new Safari browsing assistant is in the works, corroborating this report.

Farther in the future, Apple is said to be working on a more powerful version of Visual Look Up that allows users to obtain information on products when browsing through images. The feature is expected to be released sometime in 2025.

Last week, Bloomberg 's Mark Gurman said that ‌iOS 18‌ will "overhaul" many of Apple's built-in apps , including Notes, Mail, Photos , and Fitness. Apple's next-generation operating systems are almost certain to be previewed during Apple's WWDC keynote on June 10, and the updates should be widely released in the fall.

2024 is the year for stargazing – here are the best places to see the skies

So far this year, we’ve witnessed a solar eclipse , a devil comet and a pink moon .

Astronomers say this year will be the best to view the Northern Lights in more than two decades thanks to the sun reaching solar maximum – when the star’s activity is at its greatest.

Unsurprisingly, interest in places where guests can gaze up in awe as the galaxy unfolds above them is at fever pitch.

Here are some of the world’s best star-spotting stays.

Sal Salis, Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia

A natural playground of rust-coloured soil, turquoise lagoons and an impossibly starry night sky twinkling high above the Indian Ocean, Western Australia’s Ningaloo Reef is a renowned hotspot for avid astronomers.

Stay in safari-style tents as zero light pollution affords magnificent views of the Milky Way’s iconic dust lanes – known as the Great Celestial Emu by some Aboriginal tribes – as well as Mercury, Mars and shooting stars that glide across the silver-studded sky.

Blending unobtrusively into its desert location, this eco-conscious beachfront resort is also a breeding ground for sea turtle hatchlings that rely solely on the light of the moon to navigate them into the ocean; an intrepid journey that guests can watch nightly under the soft glow of solar-lit lanterns.

salsalis.com.au

Elan Valley Hotel, Mid Wales

You don’t have to cross continents to indulge in a bit of star spotting – in fact, Elan Valley near Rhayader in Powys is a 72sq mile International Dark Sky Park that was recently ranked ninth best place in the world for stargazing.

Granted silver-tier status by the International Dark Sky Association (IDA) in 2015, meaning the entire area is protected against light pollution, Elan Valley is known as a gatekeeper of the sky’s secrets as its celestial landscape changes monthly.

In May, noctilucent – or ‘night-shining’ clouds emerge, spreading high-latitude ice crystals illuminated by the sun; June uncovers thousands of green-glowing comets and galaxies; while July 17 to August 24 delivers the theatrics of the Perseid meteor shower – with about 150 meteors per hour slamming into the Earth’s atmosphere at 36 miles per second and exploding in a trail of burning fireballs. Woah!

rarebits.co.uk/hotels/elan-valley-hotel

Refuge du Montenvers Overnight Glacier Experience, Chamonix

Chamonix’s mythical massifs are known as a mecca for climbers who think nothing of clinging on to their rockfaces for fun; thankfully, there’s now a far less exhausting way to hit the Alpine heights and stargaze above the clouds.

Sitting high in the Chamonix Alps, the Refuge du Montenvers hotel is perched 1,903m up on the edge of the Mer de Glace, a seven-kilometre long, 200m deep ‘sea of ice’. Its overnight glacier experience begins with sundowners overlooking France’s largest glacier before a fancy three-course dinner and an evening of astronomy spotting shooting stars as they highlight the mountaintops and clear views of Mercury, Venus, Jupiter and Saturn as they rise and set throughout the early hours.

Dark Skies and Northern Lights Tour, Finnish Lapland

Solar maximum lasts until October and is the peak of the sun’s 11-year activity cycle, meaning a blockbuster season for Northern Lights seekers, particularly in Scandinavia, where
the already spectacular aurora displays are set to be even more wild.

Appearing like swathes of neon silk that dance across the sky in bursts of bright green, pink and purple, this phenomenal light show is caused by stormy activity on the surface of the sun and there’s no better place to grab a front-row seat than underneath northern Finland’s dark skies.

Aurora Zone’s six-day guided tour includes an aurora workshop, an aurora hunt and two evenings of sky-watching at a secluded camp
in Finnish Lapland right in the heart of the dazzling action.

The Lookout Bubble, Port Lympne Safari Park, Kent

A brilliant option for entry-level astronomers, Port Lympne’s The Lookout Bubble is a new addition to The Aspinall Foundation’s 600-acre endangered animal reserve.

Tucked away in a secluded corner of the grounds, the luxury ‘bubble’ is more of a transparent cluster with a cosy observation area adjoining a bedroom with a big freestanding bath, so guests can sleep and bathe beneath the stars.

With a cool, illustrated Stargazers Guide provided, outlining handy tips for exploring the skies, fun facts and scannable QR codes to help budding star spotters know their planets from their constellations, on a clear, cloudless night it’s possible to see The Plough, The Big Bear, The Seated Queen and The Swan as they twinkle directly overhead.

Hundreds of 'black spiders’ pictured sprawled across Mars in new satellite images

Hundreds of 'black spiders’ pictured sprawled across Mars in new satellite images

The black "spiders" (right) were pictured in the Martian region known as Inca City (left)

The thought of a colony of giant spiders sprawled across the surface of Mars may sound like something out of a sci-fi thriller.

But new satellite images released by the European Space Agency (ESA) paint an alarming picture of such a dystopian reality.

The pictures, taken in February, show dark, spindly formations scattered around an area of the Red Planet’s southern polar region known as Inca City.

The dark clusters even look as though they have legs, and that they have swarmed together in large groups.

Fortunately, these are not, in fact, a swarm of Martian arachnids.

Rather, they are simply channels of carbon dioxide that have been erupting.

The gas streams, which measure between 45 metres and 1km across (0.03 to 0.6 miles) appear when the weather starts to warm in Mars’s southern hemisphere during its spring season.

The milder temperatures cause the lowest layers of carbon dioxide ice in the region to turn to gas and, as this gas expands and rises, it explodes out of the overlying ice layers.

These explosions carry with them the dark dust from the solid surface, which then showers back down onto the ice, creating the spidery pattern we see in the photos.

Inca City, also known as Angustus Labyrinthus, was named in honour of its startlingly ruin-like ridgelines, which were once thought to be petrified sand dunes or remnants of ancient Martian glaciers, as Live Science notes.

However, in 2002, the Mars Orbiter space probe revealed that the “city” was, in fact, part of a circular feature measuring around 86 km (53 miles) wide.

Experts believe this structure may be an old impact crater – suggesting that the geometric ridges may be magma intrusions that rose through Mars’s crust after it was hit by a rogue space rock.
