Nestled between the Teesta and Mahananda rivers on the foothills of the Himalayas in the Darjeeling district, it is a reserved forest area spread across 158 sq km radius. The main entrance to the sanctuary is from Sukna which is about 30 minutes from Siliguri. Regular Safaris are offered in one’s own vehicle and it takes 2.5 hours to complete the entire circuit. There are 330 different types of plants, while the forest is said to have 150 odd elephants. The views from here are spectacular with grassy meadows on one side, the flowing Mahananda river on the other and mountains as the backdrop. Rare birds and exotic species of mammals can be sighted at the sanctuary. One can spot Tigers, Himalayan black bear, rare mountain goat, porcupines, golden cats, sambar, Indian bison, wild boards, monkey and black capped langur. The sanctuary is also home to 243 different species of birds including many migratory birds who flock here from Central Asia. The sanctuary has many tourist facilities and a lodge for accommodation run by the state government as well. Location: Sukna, Hill Cart Road. Timing: 8 am to 4 pm daily. Dudhia is a must-see Siliguri tourist place. It is a quaint small village next to the Balason river banks. Tea gardens encircle it, providing a beautiful background for all of the photos. It’s an excellent place to organise a picnic as well. 

Due to the low water levels in the winter, Dudhia has heavy visitor traffic. On the other hand, if you want to escape the crowds, go there on a weekday.

Chilapata Forest

The rainforest, surrounded by the banks of the Torsha and Bania rivers, is home to an incredibly varied range of plants and animals. This forest, which forms an elephant corridor between Jaldapara National Park and Buxa Tiger Reserve, is home to a variety of animals, including occasionally emerging new species. 

The Chilapata forest, home to the threatened one-horned rhinoceros, bison, leopards, and wild pigs, also boasts a wide diversity of butterflies and more than 20 different types of snakes.

ISKCON Temple

The largest Krishna Consciousness centre in northeast India is the ISKCON temple in Siliguri. It is a well-known centre for Vedic culture studies and one of the most important religious destinations for devotees and pilgrims. The temple’s main building has a serene, pure vibe and is set in the heart of a sizable, well-kept garden.

After participating in the transcendental worship service, you may take a tranquil boat ride on the artificial green lake. While the amusement park is jam-packed with exciting attractions, visitors of all ages are drawn to the water park’s big pool because it has a wave pool, water slides, and other entertaining activities.

Salugara Monastery

The Salugara Monastery, a Buddhist holy site and one of Siliguri’s most well-known tourist attractions, is situated about six kilometres outside of the city. It is as serene as you would picture a monastery to be ideal for meditation or if you want some time to yourself. 

A 100-foot-tall stupa was built by the lama and teacher Kalu Rinpoche. There are five relics there that are highly venerated by followers—consequently, a top destination for tourists in Siliguri.

Bengal Safari Park

A family day out in the wilderness is best spent at Bengal Safari Park. The park displays the variety and wealth of North Bengal’s flora and animals. One of Siliguri’s lesser-known attractions is the Sepoy Dhura Tea Garden, situated in the Shivkhola Hills near the more well-known Tindharia Tea Garden. This tea garden gives you a sense of the area’s unadulterated natural splendour. 

This tea estate is a short journey from a neighbouring village and is the ideal one-day getaway from Siliguri. Make a reservation at one of the local homestays if you wish to see nearby attractions.
