If you’ve been looking to purchase a power bank, chances are a solar power bank has at least tempted you. And why not? Power stations and solar panels are rapidly taking over the energy landscape, from electric cars to energy-independent, single-family homes. Getting the best of both worlds, and at such a low cost, seems like a no-brainer. But there’s a catch: solar power banks basically don’t work. They are OK as far as power banks go, but that solar component is, in the vast majority of cases, effectively worthless. Usually I post multiple products, to give readers as many worthwhile options as I think there are to make the right choice for their needs. But this time, there is only one worth spending your hard-earned money on:

Why Most Solar Power Banks Fall Short in Testing

There are an almost endless number of quality power banks on the market today. And the number of quality portable solar panels is similarly increasing. So it’s no surprise that someone wondered, what if we slapped them together into a single package? And thus we got solar power banks. Even if you aren’t specifically searching for a solar power bank, you’ve likely run across one of them while searching for a regular power bank.

Anyone who understands how solar panels work and how power banks work will immediately be able to spot the problem with combining them. That’s not me, and I had to learn that lesson the hard way through testing. But let’s start with the practical application of trying to charge a 20,000mAh power bank with a 2.5-inch by 5-inch strip of solar cells.

Solar Power Banks by the Numbers

One of the smallest portable solar panels on the market is the Goal Zero Nomad 10. This panel is 9.5 inches by 15 inches, over ten times the size of what you’re getting on a solar power bank. It’s capable of moving 7.5 watts at 1.5 ampere (A). Multiply this by 1,000, and you get 1,500 mA. If you have a 10,000mAh power bank, it would take 7 hours to charge. And this assumes clear skies and that your solar panel is optimally angled toward the sun. So a panel a tenth that size would take approximately 70 hours to recharge. And again, that’s 70 hours of direct sunlight, so we’re talking around five days at the height of summer.

While that’s not a great performance, it would be acceptable to maintain a charge while on a week-long backpacking trip. But unfortunately, solar power banks don’t live up to that level of efficiency.

Testing Solar Power Banks

I left solar power banks from BioLite, Blavor, 4Patriots, and Hiluckey on my patio for four days to see how well they charged. None of them (except one) got past the first blue blinking dot. Even when I propped up the solar power banks at the same angle as some of the best portable solar panels, it never amounted to much. OL Gear Editor Scott Einsmann reported a similar experience after leaving the Anker PowerCore Solar 10000 (now discontinued) on the dash of his truck for an extended period of time.

So what’s going on here? Well, if you read the instruction manual for most power banks and power stations, you’ll see a warning not to leave them in the sun or in your car for extended periods. That’s because heat negatively affects battery lifespan . Lithium-ion batteries lose a little bit of charge over time (typically a couple of percentage points per month) — that’s why the manufacturers recommend that you recharge them periodically if you are storing them for a home emergency scenario. They are losing a little bit of power all the time because there is a chemical reaction inside the battery, even when it’s not in use. When the battery starts to heat up, those chemical reactions occur faster, resulting in even more energy loss. If it is too hot, they’ll start to permanently malfunction or even explode.

Now we can see the inherent contradiction preventing these devices from generating any real power. The tiny solar cells need a steady stream of direct sunlight for extended periods to produce power. But, the power bank will start to leak more and more power as it heats up.

During my initial test of the BioLite, what struck me most was how easy it was to maximize the power input. Not only is the kickstand leg easy to use, but it also incorporates a sundial. This is an essential feature for getting the most out of your solar panel. For most people, in almost every situation, it’s fine to use a standard power bank. But if you’re really intent on having backup solar for your power bank, then a smart option is to purchase a separate solar panel to pair with your power bank. Then, you can use the solar panel itself as shade for your power bank as it charges, helping to extend its battery life.

Things to Consider Before Purchasing a Solar Power Bank

Power banks are becoming increasingly common for everything from off-grid use to home emergencies to simply having a backup power source on the go. If you’re looking for a power source to use on the go, you can simply snag one of the best power banks . If you’re looking for something small and portable to take backpacking, you’d be better off with one of the best power banks for backpacking . If having something on hand for home emergencies is what you’re after, the BioLite SolarPanel 5+ is an excellent choice.

If you don’t plan to subject your power bank to any particular abuse (think heat or moisture) then you can save your pennies and purchase a relatively inexpensive version. In testing, I’ve found that these work as well as brand name versions for most purposes — just don’t expect to get the same level of customer service.

Compatible Solar Panels

If you purchase one of the best power banks for camping, you can turn it into one of the best solar power banks by adding on a compatible solar panel. Look for one that has a USB-C port, as these will be compatible with most power banks. Typically, solar panels that are in the 100W to 200W range will not be compatible with power banks, as they produce more electricity than the power banks are able to absorb.

Portable solar panels can produce a surprising amount of power. Most vehicles can easily fit a 100W or even 200W solar panel without it interfering with the rest of your camping or hunting setup. 400W panels, however, are where space limitations start to arise. Smaller solar panels, such as those that can fit into one of the best backpacking backpacks or the glove box of their car, are typically in the 5W to 50W range.

The correct size battery bank for your solar setup largely depends on your power needs and space/weight requirements. There are two ways to measure your power needs. You can either look at the watt hour usage of your device and multiply that by the expected time you’ll be using it. Or you can simply run everything you want to run for as long as you’d want to run it for and measure it that way. While the limited capabilities of solar cells to produce noticeable power in sub-optimum conditions (and the loss of power in the banks themselves when they heat up) are currently limiting factors in the quest for an all-in-one solar power bank, there is reason to be hopeful that this tech will improve in the coming years. Solar, in particular, is on the cusp of important change in coming years, as solar companies look to tap into ambient light, which could result in solar panels capable of producing noticeable amounts of power, even on cloudy days or inside your home. Once solar power banks have this kind of tech strapped to their backs, we’ll likely see solar power banks do what we want them to do: produce an endless stream of power for our handheld devices.

Most portable solar battery chargers have just a few panels to catch the sun’s rays, but the Allpowers SP012 Solar Panel 100W has an expansive array of 15 panels to soak up as much sunlight as possible. We scoured the websites of top electronics brands and retailers, as well as companies that specialize in outdoor and disaster-prep gear, to amass a list of the available offerings. We then culled our testing pool based on the following criteria:

We then put each model through its paces with the following tests:

Consistent power: On yet another sunny day, we exposed the panels to sunlight for five minutes before folding them shut—imitating, say, a cloud passing overhead. After five minutes in the shade, we unfolded them and waited for them to return to full power.

However, the Allpowers charger has small loops around the edges that make it easy to hang at the optimal angle (say, from a tent or clothesline), or you can simply prop it up against a car, boulder, or other stationary object.

If you’re on a tight budget, the BigBlue 28W USB Solar Charger is a great alternative to our top pick at a fraction of the cost (as of this writing). It performed about the same in our power tests—though, since it has fewer solar panels and a lower output rating, it may struggle to charge several devices at once, or even one power-hungry device—and it has similar port options. It’s smaller and lighter than the Allpowers SP012 and just as sturdily built, but it’s less weatherized, and it comes with fewer accessories.

It’s super light and compact. When folded up, the BigBlue measures 11 by 6 by 1 inches, which isn’t much bigger than a paperback novel.

It’s also one of the lightest models we tested, weighing just 1 pound 4 ounces (or about as much as a can of soup ). Like the Allpowers model, it has a strip of Velcro to keep it neatly bundled, as well as a small pocket to hold your charging cables.

It comes with some handy extras. Like the Allpowers SP012, the BigBlue comes with four carabiners, so you can hang it at an angle using its built-in metal grommets, or attach it to the outside of a backpack for on-the-go charging. To power your gear, it also comes with a USB-C cable.

One of the wonderful things about solar power is its simplicity. The only maintenance most solar panels require is keeping them relatively clean and free of dust. A damp cloth should do the trick most of the time.

To maximize the power output, you should angle the panels correctly. Even if you don’t get the angle exactly right, a rough approximation can noticeably increase your power production. If you want to get the most juice, use an online solar-tilt calculator (we like this one from Footprint Hero ) to determine the best angle for the time of year and location. You can then use a protractor to angle your panels accordingly (there are oodles of free protractor apps available for Android and iPhone, or you can use this handy Chrome extension ), take a photo of the entire setup on your phone, and try your best to replicate it out in the wild.

Batteries don’t fare well in heat, so you should set your device beneath the panels while it’s charging, or shade it some other way to keep it from overheating and shutting down. We have more guidance on how to safely charge and store batteries .

If you want a portable solar charger with a built-in kickstand, and you don’t mind that it’s not as weatherized or portable as our top pick : Get the BigBlue 100W Portable Solar Panel .

Like our top pick, it has a rated output of 100 W and four output ports—two USB-A, one USB-C, and one DC—to charge a phone, laptop, and a variety of other devices. It also comes with about as many accessories as that model, including DC and Anderson Powerpole charging cables, car jumper cables, and 10 DC adapters.

It has five large solar panels, and measures 1.3 by 5.8 feet when laid flat. When folded, it measures 1.2 by 1.3 feet, and it’s 2 inches thick. It’s sturdily built, and a built-in handle lets you carry it like a briefcase. It also has a large zip-up pocket that lets you store your charging cables and other accessories, and it offers some additional protection for the output ports housed inside the pocket.

Its two built-in kickstands are easy to extend and prop up the panels at the desired angle, though they’re a bit wobbly. Six grommets around the edges let you hang or mount it (though it doesn’t come with carabiners to do so).

Like our budget pick from BigBlue, it’s backed by an 18-month warranty. Plus, as of this writing, it costs a few bucks less than our top pick.

Its biggest flaws are that it’s heavier than both of our picks, at 9.8 pounds, and that it only has an IPX4 weatherization rating (indicating protection against spills and splashes of water but minimal resistance to dust and other solid particles).

We also plan to test several third-party adapter cables at that time, including the SolarEnz Solar Connector to DC8mm Adapter Cable and Paekq Solar Panel Connector to DC 8mm Adapter Cable , which can be used to connect solar panels with an MC4 connector to portable power stations with a DC connector.

This is not a comprehensive list of models we’ve tested. We have removed discontinued models and those that no longer meet our criteria.

The Biolite SolarPanel 100 offers plenty of power for its size and price, and it has a good variety of output options. However, it performed poorly in our power tests, it has no included accessories, it doesn’t list an IP rating, and the build quality is lackluster (it’s made mostly of plastic, and a port cover ripped off during our testing).

The EcoFlow 160W Portable Solar Panel and EcoFlow 220W Bifacial Portable Solar Panel offer less power for the size and price compared with our picks, and their lack of DC and USB ports (they have only MC4 connectors) makes them less versatile. However, if you already have a portable power station with compatible ports (or if you find a good deal on a bundle) and you don’t mind the extra bulk, both models are sturdily built and made by a brand we trust.

The FlexSolar 20W Portable Solar Charger is super light, inexpensive, and weatherized, and it comes with some useful accessories. However, it performed poorly in our power tests, and it’s not as ruggedly built as most contenders (it has no port covers, no fabric casing, and no Velcro closure).

The Goal Zero Nomad 100 offers plenty of power for its size and price, it has a handy built-in kickstand, and it’s made by a brand we trust. However, it performed just so-so in our power tests, it has no listed IP rating, and it doesn’t come with any accessories.

The Hiluckey Outdoor USB-C Portable Power Bank with 4 Solar Panels performed poorly in our power tests, it seems cheaply made, and it has no listed IP rating. Also, the built-in power bank is not very useful—it charges itself before it’ll charge anything else—and since batteries can easily overheat when left in the sun, it seems fatally flawed.

The Jackery SolarSaga 100W Solar Panel offers less power for the size and price compared with our picks, but it’s still a good option if you already have a Jackery portable power station (or if you can get a good deal on a bundle) and you don’t mind the extra bulk.

The Jackery SolarSaga 200W Solar Panel costs and weighs more than twice as much as the 100 W version, and it has no USB ports.

ToughTested ROC 10,000mAh Wireless Solar Power Bank Overview

Note: During the summer of 2020, like many things, this battery stopped working. It was left in bright sun and did not charge fully, and finally, it stopped charging even from an charging block. I cannot say that other owners will experience the same thing, but for me, the battery proved less than tough over the long haul.

Backup batteries come in all shapes and sizes. Most of them focus on delivering a bit a power when need to any device via an open USB-A port. Some bigger batteries support charging multiple devices with more than one port. Others include built-in cables for various devices, most commonly Apple’s Lightning, micro-USB or USB-C or some combination of those. The $59.99 ToughTested ROC 10000mAh Wireless Solar Power Bank does most of that and much more, stepping up the battery game without rounding up the bulk.

First off, the ROC includes 2 USB and 1 USB-C port. That means charging up to three devices at a time. Keep in mind that three devices will charge more slowly than one, but three ports may also make owners popular at a conference as people seek out a wall plug to sit near.

But then the ROC gets very interesting. It also supports Qi wireless charging. Yep, just lay a phone atop the battery and charging commences.

And then, a solar panel. That’s right, no need to seek a wall socket. Just sit the ROC on a table while you eat lunch to top off the battery. On a full charge, the ROC will extend the useful life of various devices by up to 36 hours, which is about 4 charges for an average smartphone.

But there is more. The ROC, being from ToughTested also rates an IP65 protection rating for water and dust.

The ROC also includes an LED flashlight.

The box comes complete with a USB-A to C Armor-Flex charging cable for charging the ROC. ToughTested included their 4-foot-long 3-in-1 cable with USB-C, Micro-USB and MFI certified Lightning support to demonstrate more charging options. Both cables feel likely to outlast whatever devices they end up charging.

And finally, ToughTested wraps this the ROC with a 5-year warranty, which means ToughTested stands behind their battery’s tough exterior and its electronics.

What would make it better?

Not much. It’s a pretty complete solution.

The inclusion of some kind of attachment opening like the one on its 16,000mAh cousin would allow the solar panel to absorb radiation while walking. Another option would be MOLLE support. I just hate to see all that sunlight falling on a backpack with this battery riding inside the dark interior rather than leveraging the sun to remain fully charged.

A 3-in-1 cable in the box would also offer more charging flexibility and less cable corraling. This suggestion would require a little package redesign but could be implemented quickly.

To turn the ROC into a truly competitive juggernaut, ToughTested should consider the addition of prongs and a charging circuit to round out the battery’s utility for indoor and outdoor applications.

These suggestions might add up to an entirely new product, but they would take an already differentiated product to the next level.

The ToughTested ROC 10000mAh Wireless Solar Power Bank is a battery for all seasons. Its size and weight (.8lbs) make it competitive with lesser chargers that only offer the basics. The ROC’s rugged design, Qi wireless charging, USB-C support, and solar charging puts this battery in a class of its own.

Best Solar Batteries of 2024

Naming a single “best solar battery” would be like trying to name “The Best Car” – it largely depends on what you’re looking for. Some homeowners are looking for backup power, some are motivated to decrease their reliance on dirty electricity from the grid, and a growing number – especially in California – need battery storage to maximize the savings potential of their solar system.

The best solar battery also depends largely on whether you are installing it with a new solar system or adding it to an existing system.

So, after reviewing the technical specifications of dozens of battery models on the market, we’ve identified a few of the best options for each purpose.

Best solar batteries for backup power

Backup power for grid outages is traditionally one of the most desired features of a solar battery. While most batteries have this feature, a few stand above the rest in 2024.

Franklin Home Power

What we like:

If you’re looking to back up everything during a grid outage (including central air conditioning), the Franklin Home Power system is clearly the preferred choice among Solar.com’s network of battery installers.

By combining three 13.6 kWh aPower batteries with a single aGate controller, the Home Power system can provide up to 15 kW of continuous power and 40.8 kWh of usable energy, and a single aPower has a peak power output of 9 kW to handle large surges like an AC or freezer kicking on.

Franklin Home Power specs

At 408 pounds, a 13.6 kWH aPower battery is significantly heavier than comparable models. For example, at 359 pounds, LG’s 14.4 kWh HBC battery is over 50 pounds lighter.

It’s also notable that 13.6 kWh is the only battery size offered in the Franklin Home Power system, so it’s tough to build the system to a precise size.

LG ESS Home 8

Lithium Ion

In addition to the comfort of a globally recognized brand name, the LG ESS Home 8 offers 14.4 kWh of usable capacity, 7.5 kW of continuous power, and 9 kW of peak power, which makes it suitable for large backup loads during grid outages.

While prices vary by installer and project type, the Home 8 tends to be on the expensive side.

Best DC-coupled batteries

The major advantage of DC-coupled batteries is much higher round-trip efficiency, which can add up to longer backup power and greater bill reductions. Higher efficiency becomes especially beneficial if you’re charging an EV from your solar battery.

It’s worth noting that DC-coupled batteries can be difficult to add to an existing solar system. So, if you plan on going the DC solar battery route, it’s best to install the battery at the same time as the solar system.

Panasonic EverVolt

AC or DC-coupled

What we like: The Panasonic EverVolt has a hybrid inverter that allows it to be AC- or DC-coupled, which makes it a viable option for both existing and future solar systems. It comes in three sizes – 10, 15, and 18 kWh (nameplate power) – which can be combined to accommodate various system sizes and offers a whopping 7.6 kW of continuous power when paired with solar panels.

Drawbacks:

To be honest, we’re having trouble finding a drawback to this battery option!

LG RESU Prime

Lithium-ion

With 97.5% roundtrip efficiency , the LG RESU Prime appears to be the most efficient solar battery on the market. If you’re load shifting on a daily basis (because of time of use rates or unfavorable export rates) that extra 7-10% efficiency quickly adds up to greater bill savings than a typical AC-coupled battery.

It comes in two sizes – 10H and 16H – which can be combined in parallel for up to 32 kWh of usable capacity and offer 100% depth of discharge.

LG RESU Prime specs

Drawbacks: The two apparent drawbacks of the LG RESU Prime battery are a relatively short warranty life (10 years or 32 MWh) and the fact that as a DC-coupled battery, it is quite difficult to add to an existing solar system.

Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC)

At just 3 kWh per module, the Generac PWRcell is the most flexible and customizable solar battery on our list and perhaps the market. Stack three batteries together for 9 kWh of usable capacity – ideal for Solar self-consumption and light backup – and then add up to three more per cabinet as your storage needs increase.

Plus, you gotta love the 96.5% roundtrip efficiency!

Generac PWRcell DCB specs (3 modules)

As a DC-coupled battery, the PWRcell is challenging to add to existing solar systems. There is also something left to be desired regarding the warranty length and depth of discharge.

Enphase IQ 5P

The IQ 5P is by far Enphase’s best and most powerful battery offering to date. Better yet, it’s 5 kWh size and stackability make it incredibly versatile. Use a single module for small-scale self-consumption or stack several together to create a large backup system. Oh, and you gotta love the industry-leading 15-year warranty!

The drawback to the 5P is that it isn’t compatible with many of Enphase’s second-generation products, including the IQ 3T and 10T batteries. So, if you already have older Enphase batteries, you may stick with your current generation or consider a full lineup change.

Best solar battery warranties

Tesla powerwall 2.

The Tesla Powerwall 2 is a great overall battery with industry-leading efficiency, depth of discharge, and one of the first “unlimited cycle” warranties. Better yet, it’s often one of the most affordable options and pairs seamlessly with other Tesla products (like EV charging).

Tesla tends to be a polarizing brand, which may play a role in your decision. There are also more concrete issues regarding customer service and availability (although the latter appears to be improving)

SunPower SunVault

SunPower is a well-known and trusted solar brand and its 10-year/unlimited cycles warranty is on-par with Tesla’s. If you’re not a Tesla fan and a robust battery warranty is high on your list, the SunVault Strage system offers a great alternative.

The SunVault’s round-trip efficiency and depth of discharge are a bit lower than the industry averages and SunPower tends to come with a higher price tag than other brands.

Solar Battery Features

Frankly, there is a lot to consider when choosing a solar battery. The industry jargon doesn’t help and neither does the fact that most battery features are things we don’t think about on a daily basis.

In other words: What does it all mean???

in this section, we’ll give a brief summary of some common battery terms and what they mean.

AC vs DC-coupled

It’s important to understand the difference between Alternating Current (AC) and Direct Current (DC) batteries because DC batteries, while more efficient, can be challenging to add to an existing solar system.

This is due to differences in which type of power is generated, stored, and used in each system, shown in the table below.

Existing solar systems typically have solar inverters which change the DC power produced by panels to AC power that can be consumed in your home or exported onto the grid. But if you want to store that AC power in a battery, it needs to be inverted again to DC power.

Each time the power is inverted, a little bit is lost during the inversion process (hence the lower efficiency of AC-coupled systems).

In a DC-coupled system, the DC power produced by the panels can be directly stored in the battery and inverted only once to be used in your home or exported to the grid.

Round-Trip Efficiency

Related to AC vs DC coupling, round-trip efficiency is a measure of how much of the original power put into the power can be retrieved later on.

As we mentioned above, a small amount of power is lost each time it is inverted from AC to DC, or likewise. So, for AC-coupled systems with multiple inversions, efficiency is typically around 85-90% while for DC-coupled systems with fewer inversions can boat up to 97.5%.

If you plan to use your battery on a daily basis to charge an EV or avoid peak time-of-use rates, small differences in efficiency can really add up.

Types of Solar Batteries

The next thing to consider is the composition of the battery. Every battery on our list is either lithium-ion or lithium iron phosphate (LFP). While similar, the differences are noteworthy.

LFP batteries typically have longer lifespans and increased thermal stability (aka less heat and fire risk). They also do not use nickel or cobalt, which can be toxic and dangerous to mine.

Batteries can also be categorized as backup versus consumption-only.

Traditionally, the main feature of solar batteries was to provide backup power for grid outages. However, as net metering policies are weakened and removed, there is a growing demand for batteries that allow homeowners to save money by storing and using their own solar production without providing backup power – known as consumption-only or non-backup batteries.

Why would anyone want this? Well, the components, programming, and labor that go into providing backup capabilities are expensive, and removing these things can reduce the cost of a battery by 20-30%.

So, consumption-only batteries enable all of the bill-savings of a traditional backup battery at around 75% of the upfront cost – which can be well worth it for homeowners who aren’t concerned with grid outages.

Peak and continuous power

Most batteries feature two numbers that represent their capacity to provide power.

Peak power is the measure of the battery’s ability to handle surges of power, like when an air conditioner turns on. This is a short burst of energy that can typically only be sustained for 10 seconds or so.

Continuous power is a measure of how much output the battery can sustain over long periods of time. This figure is especially important if you plan on using a battery for backup power during grid outages.

Usable Capacity

Usable capacity is a figure that represents how much power you can draw from your battery at one time. This is different from the nameplate capacity, which represents the total amount of power a battery can store.

The key difference is draining a battery all the way down to 0% can damage the system and reduce its lifespan. It’s typically recommended to leave at least 10% of the nameplate capacity in the battery at all times to prevent damage, hence the term “usable capacity.”

Depth of Discharge (DoD)

Depth of Discharge is the manufacturer’s recommendation for how much power you can pull from the battery at one time relative to its total capacity.

On our list, this figure ranges from 84% to 100%. So, some manufacturers say “go ahead and empty the tank” while others say it is best to keep a minimum charge of 16%.

Battery Warranties

Like solar panels – and everything else – batteries naturally degrade over time. Battery warranties guarantee a certain level of performance over a stated time frame.

For example, every battery on our list has a warranty guaranteeing that it will have 70% of its original usable capacity available after 10-12 years or a certain level of usage (measured in throughput capacity or cycles), whichever comes first.

How to Choose the Right Solar Battery for You

As we’ve shown above, not all solar batteries are created equal, and the best battery is the one that serves your needs. So, it’s important to begin your search with some goals, beginning with your energy needs.

Assessing Your Energy Needs

In 2024, there are several reasons to want battery storage for your solar system. These include:

Backing up essential systems for outages (lights, refrigeration, Wi-Fi, medical devices)
Backing up your entire home (air conditioning, EV charging, heat)
Load shifting to reduce your energy bill
Reducing your carbon footprint as much as possible
Adopting new and pioneering technologies

Your energy goal(s) will play a big part in dictating the best solar battery for you. For example, if your primary goal is bill savings, then you will likely be shopping for smaller batteries than if your goal is to backup your entire home.

Comparing Battery Specifications

Once you’ve used your energy goals to narrow down a few brands and models, take a deeper dive into the specifications. If you’re comparing backup batteries, pay attention to usable capacity and continuous power. If you’re comparing self-consumption batteries that will charge and discharge every day, focus on efficiency.

Finally, if you’re having trouble deciding between two battery models that check all your boxes, use the warranty offerings as a decision-maker.

While the goal is to never have to use your warranty, it can be worth the peace of mind to have a more robust guarantee on your side.
