‘Our Place in Space’ Sculpture Trail To Touch Down In Liverpool This October

Photo of Editor

Our Place in Space: Church Street to Otterspool, Liverpool ( 14 October — 6 November 2022).

Liverpool has been announced as an additional stop on the UK tour of Our Place in Space, a recreation of the solar system as a stunning 8.1 km sculpture trail designed by artist Oliver Jeffers, astrophysicist Professor Stephen Smartt and a creative team led by Nerve Centre.

Following popular visits to Derry-Londonderry, Belfast and Cambridge during 2022, where it has been experienced by more than 300,000 people, the trail will touch down in the city from 14 October to 6 November, before returning to Northern Ireland in February 2023 at the Ulster Transport Museum.

Beginning on Church Street in the heart of the city centre and running along the riverside all the way to Otterspool, Our Place in Space is free to visit and features scale models of the Sun and planets, recreated as contemporary art sculptures. Colourful arches house each planet with an arrow and the name of the planet lit up in Las Vegas style lights.

At a scale of 591 million to one, the Sun is 2.35 metres across, Earth is 2.2 centimetres and Pluto just 4 millimetres. The Our Place in Space trail will run until 6 November with events and creative education programmes taking place across the city.

Our Place in Space, part of UNBOXED: Creativity in the UK, invites participants to consider how we might better share and protect our planet in future and what is the difference between ‘us’ and ‘them’? The project aims to bring our solar system down to Earth and send us soaring into the stars to find new perspectives and reconsider what it means to live life on our planet.

Our Place In Space

The trail is accompanied by the free Our Place in Space augmented reality app, available on Apple and Android, which allows users across the world to take a journey through the solar system, experiencing the planets in augmented reality and considering 10,000 years of human history on Earth. On the trail, users are invited to collect space souvenirs, including characters from the world of Oliver Jeffers, as well as launch a personalised star into space.

Oliver Jeffers, internationally renowned artist and author said: “For centuries, we’ve defined ourselves by who we are and who we’re not. Which side we choose, on what ground we stand, who and what we fight for. A human story, that lives merely in human minds. But with distance comes perspective – and what happens to our perspective on everything when we look back at Earth from space? Our Place in Space is a playful experiment that asks: What is the difference between ‘us’ and ‘them’? Which side are we on, and if we look back at ourselves from vastness of outer space – alone on our tiny planet, the only one that can harbour life – should there be any ‘sides’ at all?”

Our Place in Space has been designed by Oliver Jeffers with leading astrophysicist Professor Stephen Smartt and a creative team led by Nerve Centre, Northern Ireland’s leading creative media arts centre. Local partners helping to bring Our Place in Space to Liverpool include Culture Liverpool, Liverpool City Council, Liverpool BID Company and Canal & Riverside Trust.

Our Place in Space in Liverpool coincides with the launch of a new children’s book by Oliver, Meanwhile Back on Earth (HarperCollins). Inspired by the themes of Our Place in Space and available from 4 October, the book features a father who takes his two squabbling children on a journey into space to show them what binds us together matters more than what might set us apart. Oliver will be signing copies of his new book at Waterstones, College Lane, Liverpool on Saturday 15 October at 12 noon.

Liverpool Solar Panels

Around 78% of the energy used in the UK comes from fossil fuels: this needs to change. That’s why Project Solar is collaborating with your city to make the country more sustainable. To reach the UK’s net-zero 2050 emissions target, we aim to transfer as many homes and commercial buildings in the UK to solar energy as possible. But we can’t do this without you!  Using top-quality technology and installation techniques, our Liverpool customers will receive outstanding service from start to finish.

Residential Solar Panels in Liverpool

If you want to create a better future, solar panels are the perfect place to start! Make your contribution to a greener country and reap the benefits of renewable energy.

Reduced carbon footprint

The solar industry is witnessing a rapid evolution, underscored by solar panels that boast higher efficiencies and lower carbon footprints.

The carbon footprint of manufacturing and installing solar panels is relatively low, especially when considered over the lifespan of the solar energy system. Most solar panels have a lifespan of multiple decades, during which they produce clean energy.

Over this period, the amount of carbon dioxide offset by using solar energy far outweighs the emissions involved in the production and installation processes.

Sustainable Energy Source

Solar panels generate electricity without emitting greenhouse gases, a factor crucial for reducing the carbon footprint of homes in Liverpool.

The UK’s shift towards solar energy not only aligns with global efforts to combat climate change but also conserves finite fossil fuel resources by leveraging the sun’s renewable energy.

Commercial Solar Panels in Liverpool

The merits of commercial solar systems are endless. From an enhanced brand image to eco-friendly practices, Liverpool business owners can take a step in the right direction by learning more about the benefits of business PV systems.

Enhanced Brand Image

More Liverpool businesses are making the switch to solar, and those that aren’t are being left behind.

Be proud of your brand’s eco-friendly image and invest in solar panels. Your commercial solar panels may encourage customers with similar eco-conscious values to use your services!

Reduced Air and Water Pollution

Solar power systems generate electricity without emitting harmful pollutants into the air or water.

By making the switch, you can reduce your business’s carbon footprint over time. You’ll contribute to a cleaner environment and create a safer, healthier planet for future generations.

Why choose Project Solar in Liverpool?

Liverpool currently doesn’t rank in our  top greenest UK cities leaderboard : it’s clear Project Solar has plenty of work to do! To move Liverpool further up the leaderboard, we need more commercial and residential properties to make the switch to solar.

To see the change, you have to be the change, and by choosing us to power your home, you take the country one step closer to our Net Zero 2050 emissions goals.  Contact us  today for your solar panel installation.

Solar Installation Liverpool - How ESE Solar Operate

We use our bespoke Solar PV design system to estimate and plan how Solar PV will work for you and the family. We have an information network set up to give you feedback on everything the Solar PV system can do for you. Our solar PV process will provide you with the following:

  • System Performance – We prove the effectiveness of our systems by calculating the amount you save whilst using Solar Energy. We match it up compared to what you would’ve spent without Solar PV (based on old energy bills) and calculate your overall savings too. All of this is next to the original cost of the system so that, inevitably, you can watch as the plan pays for itself and more.
  • Environmental Benefits – Our system can calculate the number of carbon emissions (CO2, SOx and NOx) avoided using Solar Energy over energy from the national grid. Since we know this is rather scientific, we also provide analogies in telling you how many trees were saved as a metric so you really understand the good you are doing for your community in Liverpool and beyond.
  • Electricity Bills – All our customers mention how stark the changes are to how much they’re spending every year, and that can be readily seen at any time through our system. Most people who install Solar Panels see their triple-digit bills fall to double digits yearly, and that’s not even taking into account those who choose to store and/or sell their excess energy.
  • Financial Details – Our specialist staff don’t hide anything from you. Your upfront cost for solar will be exactly as we say, with no hidden charges being added to you at any time.

What Type Of Maintenance Do Solar Panels Need In Liverpool?

Solar Panels are touted as low-maintenance equipment that can operate for several decades with very little labour involved in the upkeep of the device. That being said, the maintenance recommended will keep your devices efficient and protected from damage:

  • Cleaning – A dirty solar panel can be cleaned easily with standard soap. However, we recommend using a soft sponge, as solar panel surfaces can be delicate. Any scratches can reduce efficiency, which is possible with rough friction. On top of that, make sure that the cleaner you use is not abrasive, as this can cause scratches. Alternatively, leave the cleaning to a specialist solar panel cleaning company.
  • Inspecting for damage – It’s best to check both the solar panel and the connections (such as the inverters and batteries) after any particularly nasty weather situation. Whilst your solar panels will certainly make it through, you may find that there could be some debris lowering efficiency, or that the weather has caused some damage to the connections.
  • Clear area of foliage – Obstructions between the sky and the solar panel mean that the system will draw in less energy. As a result, make sure that all possible obstructions are removed, the most likely being foliage or trees. Our team will point out any obstructions before installation.
  • Monitor Performance – Your solar panels should always be producing energy throughout the daylight hours. Whilst some days will be more productive than others, consistent drops in quality may be indicative of some sort of issue, especially if you’ve been following the above steps closely.

Liverpool has a temperate climate for a maritime city with mild winters and cool summers. It experiences a moderate amount of rainfall which can be helpful for keeping your solar panels clean as any dirt and dust will usually be washed away, effectively meaning your solar panel can be largely self-cleaning.

Some of the most common questions about installing solar panels in Liverpool are answered for you here…

In the vast majority of cases, the answer is no. That being said, there are several fairly uncommon criteria in which you will need to apply for permission with your local planning authority, which is typically your local council. The rules on when you need planning permission are as follows:

  • If your solar panels are to protrude more than 200mm from your roof’s surface or the wall, and they are higher than the highest point of the roof (minus the chimney), then you may need your Liverpool Local Council permission.
  • If your solar panels are to be installed in a conservation area or a listed building, you will need planning permission.
  • If your solar panels are to be built in a visible, reachable location – such as your front lawn, you may need planning permission.
  • If your property is a flat or apartment, meaning the solar panels will be built essentially on shared property that you don’t fully own, you may need planning permission.

Yes! Contrary to popular belief, solar panels do not need direct contact with sun rays in order to function, but rather simply sunlight. The sun is far too powerful to be completely blocked by clouds, so your solar panels can still generate energy if it has access to “indirect” sunlight.

Although it’s true that energy production will be lowered on days where there are heavy clouds in the sky, solar technology has advanced to the level that it will still produce more than enough to be a worthwhile investment. After all, the UK in general is known for its fairly grey weather, and yet there are still widespread reports of Solar PV Systems reducing energy bills by a significant amount.

Solar PV batteries are installed in an enclosed space, either in-doors or outdoors. Whilst your solar panels can take a beating from the weather, your batteries can’t, so they should be housed in an area of your residence where it is protected from the Liverpool weather.

Battery Storage Liverpool

Are you looking to upgrade your existing Solar PV system to include battery storage in Liverpool?

Are you looking to install battery storage to take advantage of cheaper nighttime electricity rates in Liverpool?

If you already have Solar PV installed in Liverpool then you should consider both!

We will help you to further your research on battery storage systems and allow you to choose which would be the best option for you and your Solar PV setup!

Luxpower-inverter-ACS3600-

Battery storage systems store electricity. It really is that simple!

Electricity is supplied to an AC coupled inverter, the inverter then transforms the 230v electricity into dc voltage and stores it into a battery. Once the electricity is stored to be used later in the day, it travels back through the inverter and comes out at 230V again to be used around your Liverpool home.

Power supply Liverpool

Where does the electricity come from that supplies the inverter/batteries?

The supply can come from a variety of sources including the solar PV system on your roof or from a lesser known option that most consumers are unaware of. Cheap electricity supplied by your provider to power your battery!

If you can remember the older storage rads that used electricity to heat up then you may remember the economy 7 tariff and its cheaper night time rates, although eco7 is still around things have changed slightly with the way it works due to having new smart meters in our homes.

Grid Charging Liverpool

Some suppliers such as Octopus energy have a night time rate of 7.5p per kWh, if this energy is stored during the 4 hour window and utilised later in the day then you have saved money through your Solar PV setup.

The battery storage systems that we supply in Liverpool come with integrated software inside the inverter that allows such grid charging to take place.  By selecting the cheapest rate time slots you want the batteries to charge, you can control the cost of electricity used in your home. You can then view your usage using the free monitoring software provided and adjust the times as needed.

As you can see this really is a genius way to save money on your Solar PV setup by utilising your battery storage. We hope you’ve found the information useful and are ready to put it into practice. At Spectra Solar we pride ourselves on being the experts in Liverpool on all things Solar including Solar PV, Battery Storage and Inverters.

Solar Panel Installation Liverpool - FAQS

What should liverpool homeowners consider before installing solar panels.

Before installing solar panels in Liverpool, homeowners should consider several key factors to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of their solar energy system. These include assessing the roof’s condition, orientation, and available space, as solar panels perform best on south-facing roofs with little to no shade. Additionally, understanding local weather patterns is crucial, as Liverpool’s climate can affect solar production. Homeowners should also review local building codes and homeowners’ association rules, if applicable. Consulting with a professional installer, such as our company, can help assess these factors and tailor the solar installation to your specific needs.

How does the climate in Liverpool impact solar panel performance, and how does your company address this?

Liverpool’s climate, characterised by variable weather and less sunshine than the southern parts of the UK, can impact solar panel performance. However, solar panels can still produce a significant amount of electricity even on cloudy days, albeit at reduced efficiency. Our company takes Liverpool’s climate into account by designing systems with optimal panel angles and positioning to maximise light capture throughout the year. We also offer high-efficiency panels that perform better in lower light conditions, ensuring that your solar system is as productive as possible despite the local weather.

How can homeowners in Liverpool benefit from any solar incentives or schemes, and how does your company help with this?

Homeowners in Liverpool can take advantage of several incentives or schemes aimed at promoting the adoption of solar energy. The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is a national incentive allowing you to earn money for excess electricity exported back to the grid from your solar panels. Although our company does not offer financing, we provide comprehensive information and assistance in applying for SEG and any other local initiatives available to Liverpool residents. We ensure you have all the necessary information to make the most out of your solar panel installation, including maximising government incentives and understanding the benefits available to you.

Are you ready to switch?

We help you build a brighter greener future. If you're interested in making the switch to solar then drop us a message or give us a call.

Venture Installations is one of the region's leading installers of commercial solar panels. To date, we have installed over 20MW. Our work covers all types of commercial and Domestic properties and we have a reputation for the highest standards of engineering. We can call on a complete team of designers, electricians and roofers, with a plan which takes you seamlessly from initial inspection of the property to a fully-functioning solar installation. Nowadays, installing solar power is cheaper than ever and with today's uncertain electricity prices, the potential for making long-term savings is excellent.

We will thoroughly inspect the site and discuss all your requirements with you before issuing a quote. During the survey, we will assess the available area for fitting panels, where the inverter is to be located, and estimate cable runs between all components, as well as the distribution board for the whole system. We take into account issues such as shading from nearby trees and structures, as this can significantly affect the power supply generated by the panels. The survey will of course include an estimate of the total power you should expect to get from the system.

Solar eclipse 2024: A traveller’s guide to the best places to be when the light goes out

O n 8 April 2024, a total solar eclipse will sweep across North America , providing an astronomical experience in many alluring locations.

Only a tiny proportion of humanity has ever witnessed a total eclipse – but tens of millions of people will be able to experience one as the “path of totality” sweeps from the Pacific to the Atlantic during the course of that magical Monday.

Here’s what you need to know about why you should see it and where to be.

What happens during a total solar eclipse?

The greatest show on earth comes courtesy of the lifeless moon. Normally the orbiting lunar lump merely provides earth with tides, moonlight and somewhere to aim space rockets. But roughly once a year the natural satellite aligns with the sun and, thanks to a geometric miracle, blots out the hub of the solar system to create a total eclipse.

“Even though the moon is 400 times smaller than the sun, it’s also about 400 times closer to earth than the sun is,” says Nasa. “This means that from earth, the moon and the sun appear to be roughly the same size in the sky.”

A narrow band marking the “path of totality” carves an arc of darkness across the surface of our planet. If you are somewhere on that line at the predicted time, and you have clear skies, then the experience will become a lifelong memory.

The closer you are to the centre of the path of totality, the longer the total eclipse will last. The astronomer Dr John Mason, who has guided dozens of eclipse trips (and will be doing so again in 2024), says: “People down in southwest Texas will get about four minutes 20 seconds, and that reduces to about three minutes 20 seconds up in the northeast. That’s a pretty good, long total eclipse.”

What’s so good about seeing an eclipse?

In the days leading up to the eclipse, locations in the path of totality acquire something of a carnival atmosphere as astronomical tourists converge in excited anticipation.

On the day, the cosmological performance begins with a warm-up lasting more than an hour, during which the moon steadily nibbles away at the surface of the sun.

Suddenly, you experience totality. The stars and planets appear in the middle of the day. The air chills.

To testify to the heavenly fit between our two most familiar heavenly bodies, faint diamonds known as Baily’s beads peek out from behind the moon. They actually comprise light from the sun slipping through lunar valleys.

A sight to behold – so long as you can see the moon blotting out the sun and appreciate the mathematical perfection of nature in our corner of the galaxy.

Eclipses are entirely predictable: we know the stripes that the next few dozen will paint upon the surface of the Earth. But the weather is not. Cloud cover, which blighted the Cornwall eclipse in 1999, downgrades a cosmological marvel to an eerie daytime gloom.

Almost as predictable as the eclipse is that traffic towards the path of totality will be heavy on the morning of 8 April 2024.

Accommodation rates are astronomical: even humdrum motel rooms in Niagara, central in the path of totality, are selling for C$600 (£350) for the night of 7-8 April 2024.

Where will the great American eclipse 2024 be visible?

The path of totality makes landfall from the Pacific at Mazatlan on Mexico’s Pacific Coast and sweeps northeastwards to reach the US-Mexican border at Piedras Negras.

In the US, three big Texan cities – San Antonio, Austin and Dallas – are on the extremes of the path of totality; many citizens are likely to drive to locations near the centre of the line.

Arkansas will be an attractive place to see the eclipse , with both Texarkana (on the border with Texas) and Little Rock within the path of totality.

In the Midwest, Indianapolis and Cleveland share the distinction of being fairly central in the path of totality. In upstate New York, Buffalo and nearby Niagara Falls (shared with Canada) could be extremely attractive – though prone in early April to cloudy skies.

In Canada , Montreal is just touched by the path of totality. The line then reverts to the US, passing across northern Maine – which promises to be a superb with clear skies. Then back to Canada’s Maritime Provinces, with New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland all in the line of darkness.

Will I be able to see a partial eclipse from the UK?

Yes. The eclipse ends with the sunset in the eastern Atlantic, about 600 miles off the coast of Cornwall , before it reaches the UK and Ireland . But on the island of Ireland and western parts of Great Britain, a partial eclipse may be visible with the sun low in the sky.

If skies are clear and you have an open view to the west, it will start at around 7.55pm in Cardiff, Liverpool , Manchester, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

BBC Weather presenter Simon King said: “With the partial solar eclipse occurring late in the day UK time, the Sun will be low to the horizon and will actually set before the spectacle is over.”

Can I combine an exciting city with a partial eclipse?

Boston, New York and Chicago are among the big cities that will see a sizeable chunk of the sun blotted out. Viewer as far apart as Alaska and the far north of Colombia and the Caribbean will, if skies are clear and they use the correct eye protection, see a partial eclipse. But there is nothing to compare with a total eclipse.

Eclipse guru Dr Mason sums up the difference between a 99 per cent partial eclipse and a total eclipse as far apart as “a peck on the cheek and a night of passion”.

“There will be people who will look at the map and say, ‘I live in Cincinnati or I live in Columbus [Ohio] and I’m just outside the zone of totality. But I’m going to get a 99 per cent-plus eclipse, so maybe I won’t bother to travel’.

“What they don’t realise is there an enormous difference between 99 per cent and 100 per cent. And there’s a range of phenomena that they won’t see if they put up with 99 per cent.”

You must use special eclipse safety glasses or viewers when viewing a partial eclipse or during the partial phases of a total solar eclipse.

Where should I be for the total experience?

There are no guarantees of clear skies: all you can do is play the odds based on the record of cloud cover for the corresponding date in previous years.

Dr Mason says the average expected cloud cover amounts increase from around 40-45 per cent on the Mexico/Texas border to over 80 per cent in Maine, New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

Three particularly tempting locations:

  • Southern Texas , close to San Antonio or Austin. Besides clear skies being more likely than not, access is easy with direct flights to Austin. Importantly there is much to explore in the region before and after the eclipse, from Big Bend National Park on the Rio Grande to Space Center Houston – an excellent place to continue the cosmological theme.
  • Northern Arkansas , a picturesque part of the state, with the added attraction of Memphis just a couple of hours away.
  • Niagara Falls : the dramatic border between the US and Canada could be an eclipse washout due to clouds. But the natural surroundings are impeccable – and there is plenty of accommodation, which will avoid the risk of being caught in severe traffic congestion on the freeways from Toronto and locations in New York State.

However, the most recent forecasts for cloud cover suggest that the Midwest around Indianapolis and the northeastern state of Maine could have the best prospects.

When are the next total solar eclipses?

Summer 2026 – Wednesday 12 August, to be precise – should bring a spectacular eclipse visible in northern Spain at the height of the European holiday season. The path of totality begins in the Arctic and crosses Greenland and Iceland before arriving in the northern half of Spain. The stripe of darkness will traverse the great cities of Bilbao, Zaragoza and Valencia in mainland Spain before arriving in Palma de Mallorca.

The following summer (2 August 2027), the southern tip of mainland Spain is in the path of totality for an eclipse that will sweep across North Africa and the Arabian peninsula : going east from the Strait of Gibraltar, it will encompass Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, the northeasternmost corner of Sudan, Saudi Arabia and Yemen.

Just under 12 months later, on 22 July 2028, Outback Australia will be the place to be. A total eclipse will make landfall in northern Western Australia, sweep across the Northern Territory and part of southwest Queensland – then clean across New South Wales, with Sydney in the middle of the path of totality.

Winter cloud cover could disrupt the experience in Australia’s largest city – and is very likely in the southern portion of New Zealand’s South Island where the eclipse reaches a finale.

Australia also features in the cosmological plans on 25 November 2030. This is early summer in the southern hemisphere, and likely to be good conditions for viewing in Namibia, Botswana and South Africa (Durban is on the path of totality) as well as South Australia.
