Ratings and Reviews

Good but needs apple watch features.

Overall, this is a very good app with solid features, but an Apple Watch version is missing. Particularly, I see the following features on Apple Watch that will add much value for the user: 1. Show purchased ticket. Currently it’s possible via wallet, but not so convenient. 2. Show Swiss pass. Currently not possible on Apple Watch. 3. Easy ride start and stop. 4. Train schedules I have been waiting for an Apple Watch version for a long time already. It does not seem to be on SBB’s agenda, and I don’t understand why.

Developer Response ,

Hi there. Thank you for your feedback and general praise for SBB Mobile. We offer (rather experimental) Apple Watch support on SBB Preview. This offers the display of the departure tables on the Watch. We have more features, as you suggested, in the backlog. However, it is currently not clear when and in what form we will continue here. Currently, we already have a full agenda for this and next year with topics that bring improvements for all users (buy international tickets directly in the app, etc.). Thank you for your understanding. Kind regards.

Best train app ever!

Been in Switzerland for a couple of days now and absolutely love everything about this app! Everything about it is superb: the time tables, the alerts, being able to buy tickets on the spot or ahead of time, maps of the stations that show you how to make a change, and showing you exactly where you are on your journey. I thought the apps for other train systems in Europe were good, but this one raises the bar to an entirely different level!
Good day. Thank you very much for the 5* rating. I'm very pleased that you like SBB Mobile so much. I wish you continued great journeys with our app. Kind regards.

Excellent App!

I was in Switzerland for 14 days and this app got me around the country with ease! It’s easy to use, updates to itineraries are timely. For example, I was getting a connecting train and the platform I needed to get ti was updated quickly so I made the connection! Really made the trip more enjoyable and took a lot of the travel stress away.
Good day. Thank you very much for the praise and the 5* rating. I am very pleased that SBB Mobile has served you well during your stay in Switzerland. Many greetings to the United States of America:).

Can any one help with how to add our STP into our iPhones? Have Google-d a little bit, still couldn't find a good one. Would be more practical and convenient than carrying printed paper STP.

So if you buy the STP anywhere but online with SBB it's paper? How does the Flexible Travel Pass, 15 days out of 30, work then? Set up a SwissPass account or not? Totally confused. MPB

How to use the Swiss Railways SBB app

If you plan on using the excellent train network whilst in Switzerland or enjoy a mountain excursion, the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) app is one of the most useful apps to download.

Not only does the SBB app show the timetables for all trains across the network, users can also check details for buses, boats and cable cars, as well as fares.

But it doesn’t stop there.  The SBB app also allows users to purchase tickets, save details of their trips and check information about train stations in Switzerland.

Whether you are travelling around Switzerland with a Swiss Travel Pass or are purchasing point-to-point tickets, the SBB app is an essential tool to assist with your planning.

>> Click here to read our guide to the best apps to download for travel to Switzerland <<

The guide below will help you navigate the SBB app so that you can use it to your best advantage.

Read on to find out how to use the Swiss Railways SBB app.

Create an account

If you plan on purchasing any tickets via the app, it is worth creating an account before you get started.  To do this, first click on the three horizontal bars on the top left of your screen. Then, tap on ‘Register’.

The app will open a new webpage (swisspass.ch).  You should answer the questions on each page and tap ‘Next’ when completed.

(Note: On the first registration page you will be asked if you hold a public transport travelcard.  In the majority of cases, tourists visiting Switzerland will NOT hold a public transport travelcard.)

Using the SBB app

Before you get started.

If you have a Swiss Half Fare Card, be sure to add this to your Passenger info following these steps:

Settings → Edit passengers → check the Half-Fare travelcard box, then tap ‘Save’.

Standard Timetable

To search timetables and fares, tap ‘Standard Timetable’ at the top of your screen.

Tap the word ‘From’ and then type in the name of the town you wish to depart from.

Then, tap the word ‘To’ and type in the name of the town you wish to travel to.

Next, tap the line when the date appears and use the scrolling calendar to select the date you wish to travel and your preferred time of departure.  Then tap ‘Done’.

If you want fares to show in your search results, click on the icon next to the clock (three straight lines with a o on them) and check the box next to Show prices in timetable.  You can also select the different means of transport (ie train, bus, cableway) that you wish results to be displayed for.) Tap ‘Accept’ to confirm your selection.

A list of services will be displayed showing the departure and arrival time of each service.

Each listing also shows the following information:

  • Train number – shown next to the train symbol (eg. IR70)
  • How many stops the train makes en route – indicated by a o on the line between departure time and arrival time (eg. 1 stop on the S1 service departing at 09:51)
  • The platform from which the train departs – indicated by Pl. with a number next to it (eg. Pl. 6 in the first example above)
  • Which classes of travel (ie. 1st class and 2nd class) are available on that service
  • The expected popularity of the service – this is shown by the people icons next to each class. The more ‘people’ that are shown are red, the busier the service is expected to be.
  • The duration of the journey – shown in minutes
  • Starting price of fares (if selected in Settings, as mentioned above)

You can scroll up and down to view all the different services.

To find out more about a particular service, tap on it.

If a service requires a change of train, this will be mentioned in the expanded listing.  Details of arrival and departure platform numbers will also be displayed.

By tapping the three red dots on the right of the screen, you can choose to add this trip to your ‘My Trips’ within the app, add it to your calendar or share it.

By tapping the red bar at the bottom of the screen that says ‘Tickets from’, you can view a list of available fares for that service.

Be sure to select either one way or return and 2nd class or 1st class by tapping the black button under the Passenger information.

To purchase a ticket, first you should enter the Passenger information if you have not already created an account.

To do this, tap ‘Edit passengers’ at the top of the screen. Then, tap ‘Enter passenger information’ and enter the First name, Surname and date of birth of the first passenger.  If you (or the first passenger) hold a Half-Fare Card, make sure you select the box. Next, tap ‘Save’ to save these details.

Repeat the process for any additional passengers.

Now, select the fare option that you would like to purchase by tapping the circle next to the fare type.  (If, in the previous step, you confirmed you hold a Half-Fare Card, the reduced fare will be displayed.) Tap ‘Purchase ticket’.

Touch Timetable

Another way to search for train services is via the Touch Timetable, the second option shown at the top of the home screen.

When you tap ‘Touch Timetable’, you’ll be shown some popular options. You can also add your own options by tapping the pencil symbol on the bottom right of your screen.

To select a route, drag your finger from your preferred departure station to your preferred arrival station.  The next screen opens with your departure and arrival stations already selected and you can then amend the date and time as per the instructions above under ‘Standard Timetable’.

Trips and Tickets

The Trips and Tickets icon records details of your upcoming and past trips.

My Swiss Pass

If you have purchased a Swiss Half-Fare Card, you can store the details of it within the app.  This eliminates the need to show a paper version of your Half-Fare Card to the conductor onboard.

To your Swiss Half-Fare Card details, create a SwissPass login (if you haven’t already done so when Creating an account) and then complete the requested information.

By tapping the ‘Stations’ icon, you can search for information about a specific train station.  Simply tap ‘Find station’, enter the station you are looking for, wait for it to appear in the dropdown box, then tap the station name.

Results displayed include the opening hours, parking information, a map of the station, information about equipment (such as step-free access to platforms, free WiFi, etc. ) and lockers.

When you have finished searching this page, simply tap ‘Done’ at the top left of your screen to return to the SBB app.

Day Passes Switzerland

In some instances it may be more economical to purchase a Saver Day Pass.  A limited number of Saver Day Passes are available when booking in advance 1 to 60 days before the day of travel.  Saver Day Passes are valid on all Swiss Railways services.

Purchase instructions are the same as described under ‘Standard Timetable’.

Take Me Home

This feature saves you from entering your ‘home’ station each time you search the timetable.  By adding your ‘home’ station to the ‘Take Me Home’ area under ‘Settings’, you can simply tap the Take Me Home icon and the app will show you available services from your current location to your ‘home’ station.

Emergency Call

You can quickly access the telephone numbers for Switzerland’s emergency services and the SBB Police by tapping the Emergency Call icon.

Now you are armed and ready to use the SBB app from Swiss Railways.  It is an essential tool to help you plan your train travel in Switzerland.

How do I get around Switzerland?

There are many ways to get around Switzerland , the two main ways are using public transportation and renting a car. I’ll highlight the best way to get to each destination below. This Switzerland itinerary can easily be used with either a car or by train.

If you choose to get a rental car in Switzerland, I always recommend using this site to compare rates and cars.

If you choose to use public transportation in Switzerland, I recommend getting the Swiss Travel Pass to maximize your time and save you money. The Swiss Travel Pass offers unlimited train rides on most lines, free or discounted gondola rides, and discounts to many attractions though Switzerland.

I find that it’s especially worth buying the Swiss Travel Pass if you are planning to visit Zermatt because the expensive Gornergratt train is quite expensive, and it’s half off with the pass. If you’re comfortable riding trains and buses, I think it’s the best way to travel in Switzerland.

Where do I purchase my Swiss Travel Pass?

You can purchase your Swiss Travel Pass here . Just select the correct number of days for your Switzerland itinerary and check out. The pass begins on your selected date and runs continuously. The Swiss Travel Pass comes in. 3, 4, 6, 8, and 15 day increments.

Swiss Half Fare Card

If you’re unsure of your dates or the amount of time your Switzerland itinerary will be, it might be a good idea to purchase a Swiss Half Fare Card instead. This pass is good for one month and will offer 50% off most trains. There seems to be less of a discount on shorter journeys. I prefer to purchase the more expensive Swiss Travel Pass just for ease of use while I am in the country. But the Swiss Half Fare Card may be a better option if you are only planning on taking several long and expensive rail journeys. You can purchase the Swiss Half Fare Card here .

Renting a Car in Switzerland

If you want a little more freedom during your trip, you may want to consider renting a car in Switzerland . You’ll have the ability to reach some more off-the-beaten-path places that trains can’t reach. Driving in Switzerland is easy, especially if you’re from the US because they drive on the right side of the road.

Download the SBB App for Switzerland Transportation

SBB App – Public transportation in Switzerland is shockingly punctual, clean, fast, and efficient. The SBB app will tell you when and where to get your trains and buses to take you where you want to go. This is the most important app you’ll need in Switzerland if you’re only traveling by public transportation.

I hope this guide to Switzerland transportation will help you get around the country with ease. Be sure to check out the most beautiful places in Switzerland and our Switzerland Itinerary.

There are lots of pros and cons to renting a car in Switzerland and using public transportation. Here’s a good list

Here is a list of pros and cons for traveling Switzerland by train vs. by rental car:

Traveling by Train in Switzerland

  • More scenic views out the window
  • Can relax and enjoy the ride
  • No need to focus on driving/navigation
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Arrive directly in city centers
  • Less flexibility with schedule/stops
  • Can be more expensive
  • Limited luggage space
  • More flexibility with schedule and route
  • Can stop wherever you want
  • Usually cheaper than train
  • More privacy
  • Can carry more luggage
  • Less scenic views
  • Have to focus on driving
  • More planning required for navigation
  • Have to find and pay for parking

How to correct the start date of swiss travel pass

Yesterday I purchased the swiss travel pass for me and my wife. Unfortunately I did not change the valid from date - it is now set to May 4. I am arriving in switzerland only on June 22.

I have immediately filled out a form (linked from the their website) but wondering if there is any other followup I should do. I either need a refund or change of valid from date.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. This is a large amount 1600 USD so I hope SBB can help me out.

Hello mduraphe

I advise you to call SBB: +41 51 225 78 56.

Your pass is active now and each day counts as used. You should stop it.

Kind regards, Roland

RolandP Thanks a lot. I called them and they agreed to cancel the ticket and refund 100%.

I am now waiting for funds to show up in my account before buying the new pass.

Regards Milind

What a relief! I am happy SBB helped you out.

You are not in a hurry. You do not have to purchase the passes now, it is totally fine to get them a day before arrival. They do not sell out nor is the cost raising.

Personally, I wondered if we could make, as part of a user experience improvement, the start date a mandatory field, to be completed manually. From my experience, there are too many tourists having the same issue. It generates extra work at both ends.
