Led by lead vocalist, Dave Vanian, The Damned is a punk rock/ goth rock band from London, England founded in 1976.

Previously of the band Masters of the Backside, Dave Vanian (David Letts), Captain Sensible (Raymond Burns) and Rat Scabies (Chris Millar) joined together with Brian James (Brian Robertson) to form The Damned in 1976. They played their first show as support for The Sex Pistols during the summer of that year. On 18 February 1977 the band released their first album, “Damned Damned Damned” and went out on tour to promote the album; during the spring, they became the first British punk band to tour the United States. After the release of “Music For Pleasure” and a few lineup changes, the band decided to break up in February 1978.

While apart, the members worked on various solo and side projects; and in late 1978 with a quasi-reunion of The Damned (without Brian James or Lu) that featured Scabies, Vanian, Sensible and bassist Lemmy (of Hawkwind and Motörhead) under the name Les Punks. The band once again adopted the name The Damned in 1979 and signed a deal with Chaswick Records followed by the release of three singles “Love Song,” “Smash It Up” and “Machine Gun Etiquette.”

After experiencing a lineup change, the band released The Damned released “Strawberries” in 1982 followed shortly by a soundtrack to an imaginary 1960s movie called “Give Daddy The Knife.” In July 1985 the band signed a contract with MCA and quickly released “Phantasmagoria.” While working on another album, the material that was recorded was not released due to the dissolving of their contact with MCA; consequently the band once again disbanded in 1988.

In 1993 the band reformed with a new lineup, extensively toured for two years and released an album entitled “Not Of This Earth.” However, at the time of the release of the album, the band once again called it quits. By 2000, The Damned consisted of Vanian, Sensible, Morrison and new recruits Monty Oxymoron on keyboards and Andy (Pinch) Pinching, and in 2001 the band released “Grave Disorder,” and in October 2008, The Damned released their tenth studio album, “So, Who's Paranoid?”

Live reviews

15/09/06 - The Damned/C.J. Ramone - The Great American Music Hall - San Francisco, CA

This was a weird ticket purchase.

According to the venue, C.J. Ramone was headlining. Why a replacement bassist for a defunct U.S. group was headlining for a seminal U.K. punk band with a string of hits was perplexing. I was fine with it, thinking if C.J. sucked we could leave early.

No such luck.

C.J. was the opener and did a fine job of attempting to imitate The Ramones, Social Distortion and establishing themselves as a great All-American power-punk band. What they don't get is that the power-punk era is over. Just play Ramones songs and collect your check.

They couldn't get the sold-out crowd to dance, mosh or show any enthusiasm. They played a few Ramones songs (mostly obscure ones) and left the stage before the applause stopped.

The Damned were a different story.

This show went straight back to their pre-Phantasmagoria punk roots. They did 'I just Can't be Happy Today', 'Love Song', 'New Rose', 'Neat, Neat, Neat', 'History of the World - Part I','Wait for the Blackout', 'Silly Kids Games' and a host of other 'early' numbers.

My complaint - They did "Alone Again Or" (a cover) instead of "Anything" or "In Dulce Decorum" from the same album.

The crowd in front of the stage moshed and moved even though these were songs from almost 40 years ago!

I was lost in nostalgia for the Great American Music Hall at which I used to work.

Jazz art prints on the walls, chandeliers on the ceiling, drinks served in glasses, and a manual spotlight operated from the balcony.

Good times.

Since the 70's The Damned have been putting on loud, exciting, rocking shows. To this day they have intimate concerts where they chat with, insult, and joke around with the audience. The audiences are loud, rowdy, and there to have a rocking good time.

The Damned are one of those bands that never seem to age. Their agelessness adds an element of spook and horror to their gothic music, a genre they were a forerunner of. The percussion is loud and heavy, the guitars screeching. You will not find any love songs here, just pure, unadulterated gothic rock and roll.

When they do put on a big show, such as at Rebellion Amsterdam in 2014, they go all out. The lights flash in time with the music, they scream from the stage. The spooky voice of Dave Vanian croons into the crowd. He gives it his all for the audience. The music rises above his vocals but he still manages to be the stand out performance of the night. You can imagine his voice spookily underscoring a chase scene in a horror film as the piano rises and the crowd falls silent until BAM he hits you with it again. It is a truly unique experience.

I've seen the Damned many time through the years. They were my fave from about 1980 onward and I cannot remember being disappointed by a live performance (except once at Preston (UK) they walked off cos of the spitting). Now they have matured into a tight 5 piece that have a back catalog to die for. Vanian sounds like a reborn vocalist and the sound at the Gramercy was just fabulous. By far the best mixing I have heard at a Damned gig. They are enjoying the renewed interest in the band obviously, and I look forward to seeing them again next year. Most folks will concentrate on Vanian/Sensible, but the other member shouldn't be overlooked by any stretch. Bass/Drums/Keys - all brilliant and all members add valuable backing vocals to the live experience (Nasty in particular has a fabulous backing vocal section). Monty on keys is a nutter but quite obviously, he loves being up there. He didn't even mind when during the keys solo on 'Just Can't be Happy', Sensible was in his face trying to put him off. Great entertainment.

All 4 bands that played last night were fantastic. 4 to 5 hours of straight up punk rock and good tunes.

Cro-Mags, The Damned, The Distillers, and The Misfits didn't have one dull moment. They all made my night.

The only thing that sucked was having a guy thrown over me and knocking me in my head. The security guard who saw it came up to me after the show to check on me, which was cool. I especially appreciated being "guarded" by some awesome people while in the mosh pit, especially after I got knocked in my noggin. Thank you to those people who helped me out (If you're reading this), thank you to the staff, and thank you to all of the bands that played. It was worth every penny and every second of time. When you come around again, I'll be there. =^)

This will remain one of the most memorable concerts ever. The Damned have always been my favourite band and I've listened to their work since 1981.

I was wondering if the years would take a toll on their enthusiasm, but boy! Was I mistaken! These guys played at SO36 like it was 1977 all over again. The set was simply amazing - all the greatest tracks from their repertoire from the Black Album, Music for Pleasure, Machine Gun Etiquette, Strawberries, etc. etc. It was all there. Captain was funny as ever and Monty the crazy nut job you'd hope them to be. Dave Vanian was intense and delivered the songs impeccably.

SO36 is the perfect venue for The Damned. All I can say is "Thanks for the Night"

The Bellrays were fantastic. I can't praise their performance enough and will be checking out some recordings of theirs very soon. Great choice for support band.

I'm the biggest Damned fan ever, but I thought they looked a bit tired last night. Sensible had to sit because of his broken rib and so the performance lost a bit of stage energy. They still played really well though. Vanians voice could have been a touch louder. And they need to boot Eloise and Alone Again Or from the set-list. They have of their own material to play, they really don't need to perform covers. Anti Pope was brilliant. I wanted Thanks of the Night and Curtain Call and anything from Grave Disorder.

Still love 'em though.

The Damned were in excellent form as usual.a capacity 650 crowd were kept thoroughly entertained by Dave Vanians non stop energetic exuberant performance. His vocals are just as good as 40 years ago indeed with time and maturity you could say even better.Captain sensible always has good banter with any abuse hurled in his direction and gives as good as he gets.Oxy Moron on keyboards is a wizard of musical electronics in his own innibital way. Basically if you want to see a live performance with a tight knit band of musicians enjoying very much what they are doing and a value for money guaranteed show?!!!!Go and see the Damned

It was absolutely fantastic!

The band puts on great show, even thought the audio engineer was having a little bit of technical difficulties, they still sounded great! They put a lot of energy into their performance, especially the keyboardist. I forgot his name. his on stage antics was quite entertaining. After the show almost ended, they did a four song on core. or Maybe it was three. Anyways. The last song they played was Smash It Up which is not only my favorite track but my anticipated song I was hoping to hear them preform. And it was a surprise they did!

It was the best 35.00 I've ever spent on my birthday!

Johnny Moped are still PUNK as FUCK !! The Damned never let you down always play well always change the set list to use some more obscure songs along with the fan favourites ! Glad Paul Grey is back on bass he’s without doubt a class act !! We’ve seen them sooooo many times this year and the only complaint about this gig was the lack of parking near the venue and not in the best part of town which made life a bit awkward is the polite way of putting it when the gig kicked out !

dracbudnik75’s profile image

The Damned continued to stun me, even more when they were on a stage in front of me! The band sounded great, the sound was clear, and the interaction with the fellow punk rockers was something to remember. Being only fourteen this is one show that's never going to get out of my head! I recorded most of the show in my pocket.. the sound is a bit muddy but I may upload it to YT with the date so any fan could remember the day. Thank you Damned and everyone.

THE DAMNED Announces Spring 2024 North American Tour With Return Of Drummer RAT SCABIES

THE DAMNED has announced a 10-date North American tour for May and June 2024, bringing the band's '80s lineup back together with the return of Rat Scabies for the first time in America in 35 years.

David Vanian , Captain Sensible , Rat Scabies and Paul Gray will play shows across the USA, the first time this lineup has played together since 1989. The band will open in Toronto and finish up at Portland. Tickets go on general sale on Friday, March 1.

This tour welcomes Scabies back to the stage, who has rejoined the band for tours, festivals and more in 2024. One of the original founding members, THE DAMNED drummer Scabies puts it simply: "Be careful what you wish for."

Revisiting the music from THE DAMNED 's 1980s lineup, audiences can expect songs from "Machine Gun Etiquette" , "The Black Album" and "Strawberries" , as well as THE DAMNED fan-favorite tracks like "Neat Neat Neat" , "New Rose" and more.

THE DAMNED spring 2024 North American tour dates:

May 27 - The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto, ON, Canada May 29 - Big Night Live - Boston, MA May 30 - Wall Street Theater - Norwalk CT Jun. 02 - Concord Music Hall - Chicago, IL Jun. 04 - Gothic Theatre - Englewood, CO Jun. 06 - The Regency Ballroom - San Francisco, CA Jun. 08 - No Values 2024 - Pomona, CA Jun. 13 - The Showbox - Seattle, WA Jun. 14 - Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver, BC, Canada Jun. 15 - Revolution Hall - Portland, OR

47 years after releasing their groundbreaking debut, "Damned Damned Damned" , THE DAMNED released their twelfth studio album "Darkadelic" last year, reaching the Top 10 in the U.K. albums chart.

The greatest surviving British punk band, THE DAMNED formed in 1976, releasing the first-ever U.K. punk single "New Rose" over 45 years ago. Considered one of the greatest songs from this period, "New Rose" brought focus on the burgeoning punk scene before any other group.

THE DAMNED have an illustrious and extensive history, beginning in 1976 with "New Rose" and with the release of their debut album "Damned Damned Damned" the following year. Produced by Nick Lowe ( Elvis Costello , Graham Parker ),it was the first full-length album released by a British punk band and included their now most-streamed song "Neat Neat Neat" .

After dropping "New Rose" and its B-side, a sped-up cover of THE BEATLES ' "Help" , THE DAMNED were asked by THE SEX PISTOLS to be an opening act for the famous and ill-fated "Anarchy Tour Of The UK" in 1976. Alongside THE CLASH and JOHNNY THUNDERS & THE HEARTBREAKERS too, the band hit the road, but most of the dates were canceled by organizers or local authorities, making it one of the most infamous tours in rock 'n' roll history.

Shortly after releasing their debut record in February 1977, THE DAMNED went on to support T.REX on what would be their final tour before Marc Bolan 's tragic passing later that year. Bolan was famously a big fan of THE DAMNED and invited them on tour himself.

Soon after the T.REX shows, THE DAMNED became the first U.K. punk band to tour the United States and play the renowned venue CBGB. Their spectacular performance at CBGB fully inaugurated the punk scene in America, sparking a revolution for many who attended that memorable first show Stateside.

THE DAMNED 's original 1976 lineup played its first show together in more than 30 years in October 2022 in London, England. Joining Scabies for the 21-song set were Vanian , Sensible (on bass) and Brian James (on guitar).

The English rockers first announced their reunion tour in 2020, with dates slated for the following year. However, the shows were later postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, and moved to late 2022.

THE DAMNED 2024 are:

Dave Vanian - Vocals Captain Sensible - Guitar Rat Scabies - Drums Paul Gray - Bass Monty Oxymoron - Keyboards

The Damned - Look Left

Last year, the influential first wave punks spoke to Rolling Stone about their unorthodox chemistry and musical evolution. “There were no bands around that I could relate to,” guitarist Captain Sensible said of their unique gothic punk style. “We were fighting against the mega-stadium bands like ELP, Genesis and Yes in 1976. They were all singing songs about pixies, wizards and King Arthur and the round table. What does that mean to a bloke who just left school? But we were only doing it for ourselves, to make the music we wanted to hear.”

The Damned play the following US shows in support of Evil Spirits :

October 17 – Boston, MA @ Paradise October 18 – New York, NY @ Irving Plaza October 19 – Asbury Park, NJ @ Stone Pony October 20 – Washington D.C @ Black Cat October 21 – Philadelphia, PA @ Theatre Of Living Arts October 25 – Denver, CO @ Gothic Theatre October 26 – Salt Lake City, UT @ The Depot October 27 – Las Vegas, NV @ House Of Blues October 28 – Tempe, AZ @ Marquee Theater October 31 – San Francisco, CA @ Regency Ballroom November 1 – Santa Cruz, CA @ The Catalyst November 2 – Los Angeles, CA @ Henry Fonda Theatre.

Blondie & The Damned Live in San Diego—The Punk Era Lives!

the damned us tour 2022

Deborah Harry of Blondie in San Diego, 2022 (Photo by Thomas K. Arnold, used with permission)

For nearly two hours, it was 1982 again.

Blondie’s May 18, 2022 performance at Humphrey’s—a wonderful outdoor venue on San Diego’s Shelter Island overlooking a yacht basin—was a jubilant celebration of the hard-to-categorize band’s storied career, from its pop-punk beginnings in the late 1970s through its swift spread into a wide range of musical styles including reggae, rap and progressive/orchestral.

Front and center, as always, was the remarkable Deborah Harry, the peroxide blonde and former Playboy Bunny who a generation ago typified New York cool. Forty years later, she still pulls it off like an impish Dorian Gray, ageless, timeless and, six weeks before her 77th birthday, still—with apologies for sounding sexist—incredibly “hot.”

Blondie was part of the middle 1970s “punk” explosion that battled disco on one front and the Foreigner-Journey-Kansas contingent on the other. It was fresh, it was exciting, it was different—from the simplistic rock ’n’ roll of the Ramones to the artsy, funky Talking Heads. Blondie was on the vanguard of what would soon become known as “power pop,” delivering infectious tunes such as “X Offender,” “Sunday Girl,” “Hanging on the Telephone” and “One Way or Another,” all of which were performed with passion and aplomb at the group’s San Diego show.

In 1982, after six increasingly eclectic albums, Blondie broke up, only to reform after a 15-year hiatus for a second run of chart successes that include the hit singles “Maria” (1999, #1 in the U.K.); 2003’s “Good Boys”; and, most recently, “Fun,” which topped the U.S. dance chart in 2014.

the damned us tour 2022

Deborah Harry and Clem Burke of Blondie, San Diego 2022 (Photo by Thomas K. Arnold, used with permission)

Led by mainstays Harry and drummer Clem Burke, Blondie’s show was part of what the band called its “Against the Odds” tour of first the U.K. and then the U.S. The name certainly fit: The tour, originally scheduled for 2020, was postponed due to the pandemic. Then, guitarist Chris Stein, who had co-founded the band with Harry, had to bow out due to heart issues, replaced by Andee Blacksugar. And then bassist Leigh Foxx, too, stepped down due to a back injury. His replacement: Glen Matlock, the former bassist for the Sex Pistols.

Blondie opened the show with “X Offender,” from their 1976 debut album, against a backdrop of cartoonish renderings of the band’s name and members. As Harry delivered the song’s spoken-word intro, the screen flashed with a graphic of the New York skyline and the singer in the clutches of King Kong.

An easy segue into “Hanging on the Telephone,” from album number 3, Parallel Lines , had the crowd in what was supposed to be a seated show jumping up and spilling into the aisles. One fan held up a huge cardboard heart with “I Love You, Blondie” scrawled in Magic Marker.

Related: Our Album Rewind of Parallel Lines

From there, the hits kept coming—“Sunday Girl,” “Picture This,” “The Tide is High”—mixed in with album cuts such as “Fade Away and Radiate” and “Shayla.” Most of the songs came from Blondie’s initial period, although later in the show the band did play some of its later material, including “Maria,” from the 1999 “comeback” album No Exit ; “What I Heard” from 2011’s Panic of Girls ; and “My Monster,” from the group’s most recent album, 2017’s Pollinator .

Watch Blondie perform “Picture This”

A highlight was “Atomic,” an odd marriage between punk and electronic dance music that topped the U.K. singles charts in 1989 but only made it to #39 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was punctuated by an absolutely dazzling lead guitar solo by Tommy Kessler, who joined the band in 2010.

the damned us tour 2022

For their closing number, Blondie performed a seven-minute-long rendition of “Heart of Glass,” during which Harry introduced the band members. The song ended with a brief instrumental version of the Sex Pistols anthem “God Save the Queen” as Harry walked off the stage.

Watch the band perform “Heart of Glass”

The band returned for one encore, “One Way or Another,” inspired by Harry’s real-life experience with a stalker and what many consider the group’s signature song. But even after the lights came on, most of the audience members were still on their feet, shouting for more.

Opening the show for Blondie was British punk band Tte Damned, missing drummer Rat Scabies and guitarist Captain Sensible but still fronted by singer Dave Vanian, guitarist Brian James and bassist Paul Gray. The band played an energetic set that, if nothing else, served as a reminder of how many great bands came out of England on the heels of the Sex Pistols (The Damned’s first show was in 1976, opening for the Pistols).

the damned us tour 2022

Dave Vanian of the Damned, in San Diego 2022 (Photo by Thomas K. Arnold, used with permission)

The group played most of its most memorable songs, including “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” “Eloise” and “Love Song.” Vanian toned down the gothic look and persona he adopted after Captain Sensible’s 1980 departure and in many ways the Damned that played Humphrey’s was more in tune with the original power-punk group that emerged in London in 1976. Conspicuously absent was “I Just Can’t be Happy,” from 1979’s Machine Gun Etiquette LP and a moderate hit in the U.K., while a highlight was the group’s celebrated cover of Love’s “Alone Again, Or,” in which Vanian joked, “We need a trumpet.”

Watch the Damned perform their cover of Love’s “Alone Again Or in San Diego

As opener, The Damned didn’t get the chance to play an encore, despite the crowd’s insistence. But the pairing of the two bands was, to use a cliché, a match made in heaven: two fantastic bands that have been together for more than 40 years and yet still play with the vitality and vigor they exhibited when they were young—and when we were young.

Watch Blondie perform “One Way or Another” at the San Diego show

The greatest surviving British punk band  THE DAMNED  formed in 1976, releasing the first ever UK punk single ‘ New Rose ’ over forty years ago. Considered one of the greatest songs from this period, THE DAMNED’s ‘New Rose’ brought focus on the burgeoning punk scene before any other group.   On their up-coming tour they will celebrate the iconic single, as well as perform tracks from the first two albums, B-sides and covers that the original line-up played.   THE DAMNED have an illustrious and extensive history, beginning in 1976 with ‘New Rose’ and with the release of their debut album  DAMNED DAMNED DAMNED  the following year. Produced by Nick Lowe (Elvis Costello, Graham Parker), it was the first  full-length album released by a British punk band  and included their now most-streamed song, ‘ Neat Neat Neat ’, currently on  18.2 million plays .   After dropping ‘New Rose’ and its B-side, a sped-up cover of The Beatles’ ‘Help’, THE DAMNED were asked by the Sex Pistols to be an opening act for the famous and ill-fated ‘ Anarchy Tour   of the UK ’ in 1976. Alongside The Clash and Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers too, the band hit the road, but most of the dates were cancelled by organisers or local authorities, making it one of the most infamous tours in rock ‘n’ roll history.   Shortly after releasing their debut record in February 1977, THE DAMNED went on to support  T.Rex  on what would be their final tour before Marc Bolan’s tragic passing later that year. Bolan was famously a big fan of THE DAMNED and invited them on tour himself.   Soon after the T.Rex shows, THE DAMNED became the  first UK punk band to tour the United States  and play the renowned venue  CBGB . Their spectacular performance at CBGB fully inaugurated the punk scene in America, sparking a revolution for many who attended that memorable first show Stateside.   At the beginning THE DAMNED were at the heart of London’s burgeoning punk scene and were a major influence for many. Now, over forty years later, after many different line-ups, multiple albums and nine Top 40 Singles, the original band are back together for one tour only.   They play London, Birmingham, Glasgow and Manchester in February 2022, tickets on sale now.

Noise complaints be damned, SF’s Portola Festival is back for September

Two musicians in white jackets perform on stage, one pointing up, the other at a keyboard, amidst dramatic lighting.

San Francisco’s electronic-heavy Portola Festival will return for a third year , producer Goldenvoice confirmed on Monday with an official lineup release. The two-day fest is scheduled for Sept. 28-29.

Unlike most lineup posters, which indicate a clear hierarchy of headliners and supporting acts, Portola’s punk-inspired design gives fewer visual clues as to who will get top billing on either day. But big names abound, including the Australian trance trio RÜFÜS DU SOL, the unpredictable British rapper M.I.A. and the highly choreographed French duo Justice, a longtime festival mainstay who just released Hyperdrama , their first album in several years.

Whereas Outside Lands’ recently released lineup included more than a few country acts and surprises for that always-eclectic three-day festival, Portola focuses more narrowly on EDM—particularly acts from the U.K. Twenty-year scene veteran Four Tet, 2010s wunderkind duo Disclosure and mega-producers Jamie XX are all confirmed, as are a number of big names from North America, including Honey Dijon, Peaches, Soulwax, Tycho, Fisher and Deltron 3030. Gesaffelstein, a French DJ known for his bombastic live sets, is also on the lineup, as is DJ Pee .Wee, an alter ego of Southern California rapper Anderson .Paak.

A joyous woman is raised above a crowd at a festival, arms spread wide, smiling.

The Portola lineup poster leaked to the internet last Friday afternoon—seemingly by accident, as it contained a watermark revealing some hapless individual’s name and phone number, which M.I.A. later retweeted and deleted. Goldenvoice’s Instagram post on Monday paid cheeky homage to that error , saying, “Yea, it’s real. Sorry we were m.i.a.”

M.I.A.’s goof is particularly notable, as she canceled her performance at the inaugural Portola Festival in 2022 at the last minute, citing health concerns .

Early responses to the lineup seemed strongly positive, with one commenter noting that “the more you look, the better it gets.”

Tickets go on sale this Friday at noon.

A lively outdoor music festival crowd near a stage with large screens, under daylight with industrial cranes in the background.

After the festival’s debut in September in 2022—on the same weekend that brought tens of thousands of kinksters and BDSM practitioners to San Francisco for the Folsom Street Fair—Portola moved to the first weekend of October in 2023. That put it in direct competition with Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, the free, folky event held every year at Golden Gate Park’s Marx Meadow. For 2024, Portola will now go back to the last weekend of September, opposite Folsom once again.

In spite of a little early-season rain, the 2023 iteration of Portola was much smoother than the first year, both in terms of cell service and crowd control. Electronic performances are often loud, however and last year’s festival was met with complaints—chiefly from residents in Alameda, several miles across San Francisco Bay from the festival itself. A move to shut down the festival was short-lived , however, as the organizer promised better outreach and sound dampening in 2024.

Roberto Minervini's U.S. Civil War Film 'The Damned' Official Trailer

by Alex Billington May 15, 2024 Source: YouTube

The Damned Trailer

"This land has it all." Time for a look at even more footage. Les Films du Losange has debuted the first full-length official trailer for The Damned , a French production made by an Italian filmmaker about America's Civil War in the 1860s. The film just premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, playing in the "Un Certain Regard" section . It's the latest narrative feature made by Italian filmmaker Roberto Minervini, whose last film was a doc also set in America called What You Gonna Do When the World's on Fire? . The Damned is set in the winter of 1862, during the Civil War. The U.S. Army (meaning the Union army) sends a volunteer company to patrol the uncharted Western territories. As their mission changes course, the meaning behind their engagement begins to elude them. The film stars Jeremiah Knupp , René W. Solomon , Cuyler Ballenger , Noah Carlson , Judah Carlson , and Tim Carlson . We posted the first teaser just a few days ago , but apparently that didn't get enough buzz so here comes a longer trailer. Still not sure about this one.

Here's the full-length trailer for Roberto Minervini's The Damned , direct from Losange's YouTube :

Winter of 1862. In the midst of the Civil War, the U.S. Army (Union) sends a company of volunteer soldiers to the western territories, with the task of patrolling the unchartered borderlands. As their mission ultimately changes course, the meaning behind their engagement begins to elude them... The Damned , also known as Les Damnés in French, is written and directed by the Italian filmmaker Roberto Minervini , director of the feature films Low Tide and The Passage previously, and also the docs Stop The Pounding Heart , The Other Side , and What You Gonna Do When the World's on Fire? . Produced by Paolo Benzi and Denise Ping Lee. This is premiering soon at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section. No other release dates are set yet - stay tuned for updates after the fest. How's this footage? Still intrigued?

‘The Damned’ Review: In His Latest Look at America’s Margins, Roberto Minervini Travels Back to the Civil War

The Italian-born director has lived in the United States for more than two decades, bringing the insights of an outsider to overlooked communities in his first period piece.

The Damned

Set during the Civil War, a long way from the front lines, Roberto Minervini ’s “ The Damned ” continues the Italian helmer’s career-long examination of the rifts and affinities between overlooked segments of American society. Apart from one long, destabilizing battle with an unseen adversary, the portrayal is a relatively peaceful one, following a group of Union soldiers assigned to scout the Northwestern frontier in 1862. While the country is divided, this assignment brings together men of different backgrounds, fostering camaraderie and mutual respect (surprisingly, the topic of slavery never comes up, though God factors into multiple conversations).

Popular on Variety

With their full beards and blunt features, the men in Minervini’s cast look less like professional actors than the authentic Civil War soldiers seen in daguerreotypes of the time (especially Tim Carlson, of the family featured in “Stop the Pounding Heart,” as the Sergeant). Characters have a way of drifting in and out of Minervini’s films, and “The Damned” is no different, despite its more structured premise. A select group of troops travel to Montana, bonding among themselves for a time, before a run-in with Confederate snipers drastically reduces their ranks.

Minervini’s style has always blurred the lines between documentary and fiction, and here — in Civil War reenactment mode, as participants play themselves in period garb — he covers the ambush the way a war photographer might. DP Carlos Alfonso Corral, who shot Minervini’s striking black-and-white doc “What You Gonna Do When the World’s on Fire?,” chases after the soldiers as they duck for cover and attempt to return fire. Hidden by distant bushes, the enemy remains unseen, which makes the conflict that much more disconcerting.

Does “The Damned” really qualify as a war film? At times, the low-key approach may remind viewers more of Kelly Reichardt’s Oregon Trail saga, “Meek’s Cutoff,” in that both films (set less than two decades and two states apart) provide an alternative to the conventional Hollywood Western. For instance, “The Damned” doesn’t even bother to identify the names of its characters, rejecting the 20th-century focus on the individual — where heroic characters might be played by John Wayne or Henry Fonda — in favor of a collective sea of faces.

That’s something so many war movies get wrong: When men enlist in the Army, they agree to put the cause ahead of themselves. It becomes their duty to accept orders, however counterintuitive, whereas in Hollywood movies (of the past 50 years, at least), authority is nearly always wrong, and success is only possible when someone steps out of line and does what’s right. In reality, such behavior would almost surely get the fanatic (and many of his comrades) killed.

In a challenge to America’s own mythology, Minervini dispenses with such tropes, while allowing his characters — including a fresh-faced teen known only as ”Young Soldier” (Judah Carlson) — space to reflect on their reasons for signing up. They question the existence of God, debate the ideas of good and evil, and try to make sense of their mounting disillusion. “The Damned” has a tendency to meander, but in so doing, it strives toward something authentic.
