About The Gruffalo

The beloved tale of the Gruffalo's encounter with a cunning little brown mouse burst into bookshops and library’s back in 1999.

The adventures of  The Gruffalo  began when Julia Donaldson stumbled upon a Chinese folktale tale featuring a clever girl who outwitted a hungry tiger by pretending to be the Queen of the Jungle. Intrigued by the story, Julia embarked on her own creative mission to create a character that could be adored by children worldwide.

First published in 1999, the charming tale of courage and cunning has sold over 13.5 million copies and has cemented Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler as the most successful author and illustrator duo in picture book publishing history!

LOVED THE SHOW! The characters were hilarious. You could feel the anxiety from the kids when they knew the gruffalo was imminently going to arrive but he was humorous which relieved the tension and apprehension! Have recommended to my friends.

The Gruffalo, West End, Tall Stories, 2019

Time Out says

This long-lived production of the beloved picturebook is still heaps of fun

Tall Stories’ stage version of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s classic kids’ picturebook ‘The Gruffalo’ is now something of a classic itself. First performed in 2001, it’s only a couple of years younger than the book, and is rarely off the UK stage, whether that’s on a national tour or settling in for its frequent West End runs.

And it remains fresh and charming, a piece of upbeat DIY theatre in which three performers (not the original three, of course) assume the roles of the various denizens of the Deep Dark Wood, into which the intrepid Mouse heads on a nut-finding expedition.

As is always the way with stage adaptations of picturebooks, the source material needs to be bulked out if you’re to get an hour’s show out of it. Toby Mitchell’s production opts to greatly expand the various hostile characters Mouse meets along the way: so Fox is now a gobby wideboy, Owl is a sort of mad flight lieutenant, and Snake is a preening Spaniard; each has a song in a reasonably appropriate musical style. Okay, some of it’s a bit off-piste and occasionally it even feels like it’s nakedly vamping for time. But it’s fun, and funny, and a fine testament to the power of the imagination: only the titular woods-dwelling beast has a costume that comes close to illustration from the book, and yet the audience is rapt.

And of course, spaced out though they now are, you do still get Donaldson’s gloriously ricocheting rhymes – the iconic central refrain (‘why didn’t you know/there’s no such thing as a gruffalo?’) is the preschoolers’ equivalent to the chorus of ‘My Way’, and after a little encouragement it’s bawled back at the cast with equal elan. While the book remains popular, so will this, and quite right too.

Frequently asked questions

Can children go to all theatres in london .

Most West End shows are suitable for people aged 12 or older. Some productions might have material that is too mature for younger theatregoers. However, there are also fantastic family shows which are appropriate for all ages, or which are specifically aimed at kids – including shorter children’s shows with elements like puppetry and singalongs.

We have included the official production age recommendations with all of our London show picks on this page, but you can always consult the theatre in question for further information to ensure the show is suitable for your children. Find the best deals on London family shows at Telegraph Tickets .

Can I take a 1 or 2 year old to the theatre?

The majority of London theatre shows are aimed at kids from ages 3 upwards at least. The longer running times, and elements like busy lighting and sound design, plus more mature material, probably won’t suit 1 or 2 year olds. Most productions recommend that 3 year olds or older should attend.

However, there are some London plays and musicals for 1 or 2 year olds. For example, children’s theatres like the Polka Theatre, Half Moon Theatre, Unicorn Theatre and Little Angel Theatre host productions aimed at very young children, as well as fun interactive workshops. Find all the latest recommendations for London kids shows and more at Telegraph Theatre .

Are children booster seats available?

Some, though not all, theatres provide booster seats – for example, Nederlander theatres (which includes the Dominion Theatre, Aldwych Theatre and Adelphi Theatre) rent booster seats for £1 if you ask a member of staff. They also provide booster cushions, available on a first come, first served basis. Some venues will also have height restrictions so that patrons sitting behind you can still see. If you want to check ahead of time about booster seats, contact the theatre box office.

Is there storage available for my stroller?

That depends on whether the theatre has a cloakroom where you can store large items, like suitcases and strollers (usually for a small charge, around £1 or £2). This does vary across different venues, so it’s worth contacting the theatre ahead of time to check. In most cases, the cloakroom will open about 45 minutes before the show begins, and you can store items for the duration of the show.

Can I bring my own snacks and drinks into the the theatre?

Some theatres, especially in the West End, won’t allow you to bring your own snacks and drinks in, unless it’s something like a sealed bottle of water. That’s because they sell food and drink in the theatre and that’s part of how they bring in revenue. If you have concerns about dietary requirements, you can contact the theatre beforehand to make arrangements. Plus it’s part of the fun of a theatre outing, treating yourself and your kids to a drink or an interval ice cream.

Are there frequent breaks throughout the duration of a performance?

If it’s a show for a general audience, there will usually be one interval of around 15 minutes; really long shows might have two intervals. Very occasionally a show won’t have an interval at all. You can find that information on Telegraph Tickets and other booking or theatre websites, or check with the box office. Most shows designed specifically for younger audiences will have short running times, like an hour or less. However, if you need to exit the theatre more frequently, for example for a toilet break, child-friendly venues will tend to be more relaxed about that – perhaps try to book near the end of a row so you don’t disrupt other audience members when coming and going.

Red-hot comedian Matt Rife, who was about to begin a sold-out run of eight shows at the Chicago Theatre, abruptly postponed those performances Thursday afternoon.

“On the way to a recent show in Indiana, Matt experienced extreme exhaustion symptoms and nearly fainted heading to the venue. Matt is currently under advisement from his medical team to take immediate time off from touring for two weeks,” the venue said in a notice to ticketholders.

Rife had been scheduled to perform two shows a night Thursday through Sunday. Tickets will be honored at the rescheduled dates Dec. 26-30, and refunds are available for those unable to attend.

Two Wednesday shows in Bloomington, Indiana, also were rescheduled at the last minute, with Rife posting that he had “a last minute medical emergency.” And upcoming June 6-9 dates at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee, were canceled.

The Ohio-born comedian is one of the fastest-rising stars on the stand-up circuit, riding the popularity of his sets presented first on YouTube and then in the November Netflix special “Matt Rife: Natural Selection.”

The eight Chicago Theatre shows would have set a record for venue’s most consecutive comedy performances.

Bolshoi Theater in Moscow: history, tickets and tours

the gruffalo theatre tour

The Bolshoi Theater in Moscow

The Moscow Bolshoi Theater is world-famous. Ballet fans around the world are familiar with its magnificent performances of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake or Nutcracker. The theater building is located not far from the Kremlin in the heart of the Russian capital. In addition to ballet performances, there are also regular concerts and operas in the Bolshoi.

On the way to the theater you can already see the beautiful classical facade from afar. In the building itself, the chandeliers glitter above you when you walk upstairs. The walls are covered in gold and the seats are upholstered in soft red velvet. Whoever enters the main hall of the famous Bolshoi Theater for the first time will be amazed.

The current building has been standing in its traditional spot in Moscow for a good 200 years, and since 2011, the Bolshoi has been renovated it in its old glory since 2011. More than 200 dancers are on the stage at one of the famous ballet performances.

The history of the Bolshoi

As early as the beginning of the 19th century, the Russian tsars admired the performances in the Bolshoi, the hustle and bustle, the music and dancers. But even when the tsarist rule in Russia ended a hundred years ago, the theater retained its place in the center of the cultural life of the Russian metropolis. The tradition of ballet performances was maintained even in Soviet times.

the gruffalo theatre tour

At first glance, the visitor doesn’t even realize how big this theater actually is. There are a number of different buildings that make up the complex. The main house has seven floors, and there are also five floors underground. More than 3,000 employees work in the Bolshoi Theater, but only about 200 of them are ballerinas and dancers.

Where is the Bolshoi Theater located?

Just a five-minute walk from the Kremlin, right next to the Russian State Duma Parliament, the Bolshoi is located in the middle of the capital of the Russian Federation. The Moscow Metro has its own “Teatralnaya” station (Theater station) right in front of the main entrance. Arriving by underground is also recommended – there are only a few parking spaces available to guests for performances.

This map shows the location of the Bolshoi in central Moscow:

Is there a special dress code?

If you want to visit the theater, there is no need to pay attention to any specific evening wear. However, a well-groomed appearance is very important. You can also go to the theater with a pair of jeans and a sweater, but you should feel “underdressed” compared to the rest of the audience.

Men with shorts are not allowed to go to the Theater. In general, make sure that your clothes are elegant and clean. Because if you go to a performance or a concert in the Bolshoi Theater, you should know that most viewers dress up for it, because the visit is a special event for most of the guests.

In the Bolshoi Theater, as in many other public places in Russia, a lot of emphasis is placed on security. When you visit the Theater, you have to go through a security check with metal detectors. Make sure that you do not carry any sharp objects with you. If this is the case, the access will be denied. In addition, all auditoriums have a video surveillance system. Umbrellas, larger bags etc. must be left in the cloakroom.

Don’t miss the third gong!

When the break is over, all viewers are made aware of this with a gong. It is important that you are back to your seat after the third gong. If you are late, you will have to spend the next act in the upper tier. It doesn’t matter whether you have a reservation for better seats.

The Bolshoi is legendary and if you would like to experience the world-famous Theater for yourself, you first need a Russian visa . You can find out how to get this here!

Is it allowed to take photos or videos in the Bolshoi Theater?

The answer to that is clearly no! It is strictly forbidden to take videos or photos in the Bolshoi Theater. You are also not allowed to enter the room with a photo or video camera.

Are children also allowed to visit the Bolshoi Theater?

Children from 5 years of age can easily attend the day performances in the theater. However, if you want to attend an evening performance with your child, then the child must be at least 10 years old. By the way, you also have to buy an entrance ticket for children.

Where can I get tickets for the world-famous theater?

The Bolshoi Theater has a total of two stages, namely the new stage and the historic main stage. The sale of tickets for both stages begins three months before the concert. If you would like to visit the Beethoven Hall, you can purchase a ticket for a performance two months in advance. Tickets for a performance in the theater cost between 17,000 and 110,000 rubles, which is the equivalent of between 230 and 1,500 $.

You can only buy tickets for the theater with a valid identity card. You also have to show this ID when visiting the theater. It is also important to know that tickets that have already been purchased cannot be returned unless there is a change in the program.

You can buy a ticket online on the official theater website: https://russlande.de/bolshoi-theater-moskau-karten/ or at the four main ticket offices of the Theater. If you want to pre-order tickets, you can contact this email address:  [email protected]

Breaking news, how much are tickets to see ‘80s icon joe jackson on his 2024 tour.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Singer Joe Jackson strikes a pose for the camera.

Joe Jackson is “Steppin’ Out” once again.

For the first time since 2022, the ’80s icon is back on the road, this time with his ‘Two Rounds Of Racket Tour’ with special guest Max Champion, who also happens to be his alter ego.

And if you want to see the oddball co-headliner tour in support of their jubilant, throwback 2023 album “Mr. Joe Jackson presents Max Champion in ‘What A Racket!'” in New York or New Jersey, you’re in luck.

As of now, Jackson — and, umm…Champion — have five shows in the Big Apple and Garden State these next few weeks.

First up, the “Is She Really Going Out With Him” hits Albany’s The Egg on Friday, May 31.

After that, he’ll swings into Tarrytown’s Music Hall on June 1 and New York City’s Apollo Theater on June 7-8.

The 69-year-old hitmaker ends his NY/NJ run at Red Bank, NJ’s Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre on Thursday, June 13.

For those who can’t wait to see what tricks Jackson and Champion have up their sleeve, it isn’t too late to scoop up last-minute tickets.

At the time of publication, the lowest price we could find on seats was $34 before fees on Vivid Seats.

Other shows start anywhere from $49 to $291 before fees.

Curious how much tickets will cost at the concert closest to you?

We’ve got everything you need to know and more about Joe Jackson and Max Champion’s ‘Two Rounds Of Racket Tour’ below.

All prices listed above are subject to fluctuation.

Joe Jackson tour schedule 2024

A complete calendar including all North American tour dates, venues and links to the cheapest tickets available can be found here:

(Note: The New York Post confirmed all above prices at the publication time. All prices are in US dollars, subject to fluctuation and include additional fees at checkout .)

Vivid Seats is a verified secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They offer a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and your tickets will be delivered prior to the event.

Joe Jackson set list

What does a Jackson/Champion show look like?

Well, based on a recent rundown from Setlist FM , here’s what you can expect to see at one of the pair’s live concerts:

Set I: Joe Jackson Solo

01.) “Dave” 02.) “A Little Smile” 03.) “A Place in the Rain” 04.) “Obvious Song” 05.) “You Can’t Get What You Want (Till You Know What You Want)” 06.) “Real Men” 07.) “Steppin’ Out” 08.) “It’s Different For Girls” 09.) “On Your Radio” 10.) “Waterloo Sunset” (The Kinks cover) 11.) “Hello, Hello, Who’s Your Lady Friend?” (Harry Fragson cover) 12.) “My Old Dutch” (Albert Chevalier cover) Set II: Songs of Max Champion

13.) “(Overture): Why, Why, Why?” 14.) “What a Racket!” 15.) “The Bishop and the Actress” 16.) “Health & Safety” 17.) “Think of the Show! – A Thespian’s Lament” 18.) “Dear Old Mum – A London-Irish Lament” 19.) “The Shades of Night” 20.) “Monty Mundy (Is Maltese)!” 21.) “Never So Nice in the Morning” 22.) “The Sporting Life”

23.) “Is She Really Going Out With Him?” 24.) “Worse Things Happen at Sea”

Joe Jackson new music

On Nov. 24, 2023, Jackson released his 21st studio album “Mr. Joe Jackson presents Max Champion in ‘What A Racket!'”

Comprised of 11 kitschy tracks, the concept album is performed by fictional late 19th century/early 19th century music hall performer Max Champion (Jackson) and a 12-piece orchestra.

The Champion character, born in 1882, is supposed to be related to the music hall composer, singer and comedian Harry Champion. As for Max Champion, he allegedly died fighting in World War I and his songs were lost to the sands of time. This is where things get confusing. Supposedly, Champion’s sheet music was found between 2014-19 and there was enough material for Jackson to record an album.

“These were wonderful songs in their time, but they’re surprisingly modern, too,” Jackson said in a press release. “Sometimes it’s almost as if Max is speaking, from his London of the early 20th century, directly to us in the early 21st.”

As for the music, it’s a departure from the catchy new wave you know and love from Jackson’s catalog. Yet, there’s still a lot to like. Think Disney villain ballads, Broadway musicals and flamboyant showmen and you have Max Champion.

“(Overture): Why Why Why” is a rousing crowd pleaser, “The Sporting Life” will send you in a time machine to the 1910s and “What A Racket!” is a true shot of fast and frenetic pop adrenaline.

For us, the rousing, melancholy “The Shades Of Night” is the ambitious album’s true highlight. It’s gorgeously arranged and a bit silly to boot.

All in all, the album is a big swing and mostly lands. If you want to hear for yourself, you can check out “Mr. Joe Jackson presents Max Champion in ‘What A Racket!'” in its glorious entirety here .

’80s rockers on tour in 2024

Quite a few of Jackson’s contemporaries from way back when (that is, the 1980s; not Max Champion’s from the 1910s) are still kicking it on the road this year.

Here are just five of our favorites you won’t want to miss live these next few months.

•  Elvis Costello with Daryl Hall

•  Squeeze with Boy George

•  The Pretenders

• Paul Weller

Audra McDonald to Star in ‘Gypsy’ Revival on Broadway This Fall

The six-time Tony-winning actress will play musical theater’s most famous stage mother in a production directed by George C. Wolfe.

By Michael Paulson

Audra McDonald has been dreaming of “Gypsy” since she was a 10-year-old in Fresno, Calif., with a small part in a dinner theater production of the musical. She played one of the children in a vaudeville act called “Uncle Jocko’s Kiddie Show,” and ever since, she said, “Gypsy” has remained “very much alive in my brain.”

McDonald, who has won more competitive Tony Awards than any other performer in history, has for years been thinking about the show’s main character, a domineering stage mother named Rose. She has even sung from the musical’s score at some of her concerts.

Now, McDonald, 53, will play Rose in a Broadway revival of “Gypsy” opening later this year.

“It’s one of the great roles in musical theater, and I’ve always thought maybe some day I could try it,” McDonald said in an interview. “It scares me to death, but I certainly feel old enough now, and having experienced motherhood, perhaps I have what is needed to dive in and explore her and all that she is.”

The production, directed by George C. Wolfe and choreographed by Camille A. Brown, is to begin previews on Nov. 21 and open Dec. 19 at the Majestic Theater, which has been under renovation since last year’s closing of “The Phantom of the Opera.” (That show ran there for 35 years.)

“Gypsy,” first staged on Broadway in 1959, is inspired by the memoir of Gypsy Rose Lee, a stripper who reflects on her relationship with her mother. The musical’s Rose is ravenously hungry for fame for her daughters, or maybe for herself. The role was originated by Ethel Merman , and has since been played on Broadway by Angela Lansbury , Tyne Daly , Linda Lavin, Bernadette Peters and Patti LuPone , on film by Rosalind Russell and on television by Bette Midler .

McDonald said she sees “Gypsy,” which features music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by Arthur Laurents, as “a perfect musical” and called Rose a “deeply flawed and brilliantly alive character.” She recalled that in a 1989 review in The New York Times, Frank Rich wrote , “‘Gypsy’ is nothing if not Broadway’s own brassy, unlikely answer to ‘King Lear.’”

McDonald has appeared in 13 Broadway shows. Most recently, she starred in a 2022 production of the Adrienne Kennedy play “ Ohio State Murders .” She has been nominated for Tony Awards 10 times; her six wins were for roles in “Carousel,” “Master Class,” “Ragtime,” “A Raisin in the Sun,” “Porgy and Bess” and “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill.” She is the only person who has won Tonys in four different acting categories (leading and featured in musicals and plays).

Wolfe previously directed McDonald in the 2016 Broadway production of “ Shuffle Along, or the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed ,” as well as in last year’s Netflix film “Rustin.” Wolfe won Tony Awards for directing “Angels in America: Millennium Approaches” and “Bring in da Noise, Bring in da Funk” and this year is receiving a special Tony Award for lifetime achievement.

Wolfe said in an interview that McDonald asked him to direct the production, and added that he has a personal connection to one of the authors — Laurents was among his teachers at N.Y.U. in the early 1980s, and became an early supporter of his career. He called “Gypsy” “a really great piece of theater literature” and Rose “one of the best written roles in the musical theater canon.”

He said that his ideas for the production were still evolving. “The thing that keeps on resonating with me is the idea of not enough: not enough space, not enough love, not enough money,” Wolfe said. “That’s what’s pulling me in.”

The “Gypsy” revival — which will be the sixth production of the show on Broadway — is being lead produced by Tom Kirdahy and Mara Isaacs, who are also among the lead producers of “Hadestown.”

ABOUT ELLEN DEGENERES

As a beloved television icon and entertainment pioneer, Ellen DeGeneres’ distinctive comedic voice has resonated with audiences from her first stand-up comedy appearance through her work today on television, in film, and in the literary world.

Ellen DeGeneres made a home for herself in daytime with her hit syndicated talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show , which ended in 2022 after an incredible nineteen seasons. As one of the longest running daytime television shows, it earned 64 Daytime Emmy® Awards, including 12 for Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show, crowning it the record holder in this category. DeGeneres has also won 12 Teen Choice Awards, five Kids’ Choice Awards, and 24 People’s Choice Awards, making her the most decorated individual in the franchise’s 45-year history.

DeGeneres continues to shine as a powerhouse in the digital space. She has an impressive reach of over 300 million social followers, with over 20 million new followers and 4 billion views in the past year. Ellen’s games business continues to impress and grow with properties like Head’s Up. The game, with over 70 million downloads, has been played over 2 billion times and has been Apple’s top-paid App for 7 consecutive years, the longest-running in its history.

In November 2016, DeGeneres was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The prestigious award is the nation’s highest civilian honor bestowed on DeGeneres by President Obama for her extraordinary contributions to notable change and progress in the United States. Most recently, DeGeneres received the Carol Burnett Award at the 77th Golden Globe Awards in 2020, the second recipient to be honored with the accolade following its namesake, Carol Burnett. She was also presented with the 15 th Annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in October 2012.

DeGeneres had the honor of hosting the highly rated 79th Annual Academy Awards® in 2007, securing her a Primetime Emmy® Award nomination in the Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program category. In 2014, DeGeneres hosted the 86th Annual Academy Awards, drawing the telecast’s largest audience in 14 years, and most famously broke the Internet with her star-studded selfie.

DeGeneres also received critical success for her HBO stand-up specials: “The Beginning,” earning two Primetime Emmy nominations in 2001, and “Here and Now,” nominated for two Primetime Emmys in 2004. In 2018, DeGeneres returned to her stand-up comedy roots after a 15-year hiatus with a critically acclaimed Netflix comedy special, “Relatable,” which secured her a 2020 Grammy Award nomination.

DeGeneres’ production company, A Very Good Production (AVGP), has produced a wide range of television including several unscripted series on NBC such as fan-favorite game show, “Ellen’s Game of Games,” and holiday special, “Ellen’s Greatest Night of Giveaways” – both hosted by DeGeneres – and the hit series “Little Big Shots.” AVGP also produced the Daytime Emmy Award-winning “Green Eggs and Ham” for Netflix, “Wildlife Warriors” for Discovery Channel, and many more. In September 2019, DeGeneres announced HBO Max ordered four original series, including “Ellen’s Next Great Designer,” “First Dates Hotel,” “Little Ellen,” and “Finding Einstein” docu-series.

In a recent deal with Discovery, DeGeneres produced two projects that included the documentary, Endangered, which aired in April 2021 and Saving the Gorillas: Ellen’s Next Adventure which aired in September 2023.

DeGeneres has found success in feature films, scoring an unprecedented popular and critical response to her character Dory in the blockbuster animated feature “Finding Nemo.” The highly anticipated sequel, “Finding Dory,” was released in June 2016 and set the record for the highest-grossing animated film debut at the domestic box office and surpassed the billion-dollar global box office mark.

An accomplished best-selling author, DeGeneres released her first home design book, “HOME,” in Fall 2015. Additionally, DeGeneres has had three best-selling books: “Seriously…I’m Kidding,” which includes a compilation of comedic observations, quotes, and stories from her life, “The Funny Thing Is…,” and “My Point…And I Do Have One.” “The Funny Thing Is…” and “Seriously…I’m Kidding” both secured DeGeneres a Grammy Award nomination in 2004 and 2012.

DeGeneres launched Kind Science in 2021, a direct-to-consumer, high-performance skincare line that provides age-positive results, available at KindScience.com.

DeGeneres’ career began as an emcee at a local comedy club in her hometown of New Orleans. Her acting career in television includes several successful sitcoms before being offered a part in “These Friends of Mine” by ABC, later renamed “Ellen” following the first season. Running from 1994 to 1998, the show garnered record ratings with DeGeneres receiving Primetime Emmy nominations each season in the Best Actress category. In 1997, DeGeneres was the recipient of the coveted Peabody Award and earned a Primetime Emmy Award for writing the critically acclaimed “Puppy Episode” where her character came out as a gay woman to a record 46 million viewers.

Both on and off-screen, DeGeneres’ humanitarian efforts take center stage. In 2018, DeGeneres established The Ellen Fund, which supports global conservation efforts for critically endangered species.  The first initiative of the fund was The Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund which finally opened in February 2022 outside Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. Ellen and her show gave away almost half a billion dollars to various causes and people in need over the course of its 19 years on the air.
