A 75-year-old Colorado woman died and two others were taken to the hospital after large waves caused a double-decker tour boat to sink Tuesday near the Blue Lagoon Island in the Bahamas, according to reports.

"Our boat is sinking … so that's fun," Kelly Schissel could be heard saying in a video she posted to TikTok. "Everybody's freaking out."

People wearing life vests screamed and some jumped into the water as the boat lifted to one side.

The ferry was almost to the island, but not close to shore, Schissel said in a subsequent video. She said she believed the captain was trying to be "silly" by whipping the boat's end around while trying to turn into the Blue Lagoon area.

"Then all of a sudden we kinda hear people kind of freaking out a little bit," she said as passengers on the top deck where she was began wondering what was going on.

When she looked down below, she noticed water coming onto the boat.

"One of the crew members that was downstairs ran upstairs and was crying, freaking out, absolutely bawling, grabbing a life jacket," she said.

She said many of the passengers aboard were waiting for the tour boat staff to tell them what to do, but claims they never did because they were too busy panicking.

A statement from Blue Lagoon Island shared on social media from The Caribbean Post makes no mention of the woman who died. (@paigeliebs via Storyful)

Another passenger, Sarah Plourde, told Storyful, "The first floor filled with water, and we had to climb to the side and climb out the window. The captain wouldn’t turn the engines off, so we were scared to swim out the back due to the propeller."

Schissel said a lot of people jumped into the choppy water in attempts to get to rescue boats. She ended up on a local fisherman's boat. She said once ashore, those impacted were offered shirts, shoes and food prior to being taken back to the cruise ship they were traveling on ahead of the planned excursion.

The Nassau Guardian responded to the scene and said the victim's "covered body was lying on the vessel that was used for the rescue, and her husband was crouched over her with his head down caressing her."

The local newspaper spoke with police, who said the ferry had more than 100 passengers on board when it left a Bay Street dock for Blue Lagoon around 9:30 a.m. The boat began taking on water about a half hour into the ride.

A statement from Blue Lagoon Island shared to X by The Caribbean Post says the incident happened around 11 a.m., and that "emergency teams from the island quickly arrived to render assistance." It said passengers and five staff members were located, taken to the island and two passengers were taken to the hospital for additional care.

"All onboard are accounted for," the statement reads. "The Royal Bahamas Defense Force, Blue Lagoon, and other vessels all assisted in getting people to shore and we are grateful for their help." The statement made no mention of the woman who died. Blue Lagoon Island did not immediately respond to a Fox News Digital request for comment.

4 tourists die in Mexico shipwreck between Cancún and Isla Mujeres

Four people have died and over a dozen were rescued in the shipwreck of a small boat carrying tourists between Isla Mujeres and Cancún, two vacation hot spots in Mexico, on Monday night.

A total of 19 people — 17 tourists from Mexico, the captain, and a helper — were on board the small boat, Raciel López Salazar, the attorney general of Quintana Roo state, told reporters Tuesday.

The boat, called Diosa del Mar — which translates to “Goddess of the Sea” — was from Puerto Juárez. It “wrecked” in the bay between Isla Mujeres and Cancún, the Isla Mujeres city council said in a news release . Isla Mujeres is about 3.5 miles off Cancún.

Four Mexican tourists died after a boat carrying 19 people capsized or swamped between Cancún and Isla Mujeres, authorities said Tuesday.

The boat was returning to Cancún from Isla Mujeres. It's not clear whether it capsized or sank somehow.

The captain survived and was taken into custody, the city council said.

Investigators from the state of Quintana Roo are investigating whether the boat had the capacity to hold 19 people and whether `weather played a role in the incident.

“We are analyzing the climatological conditions, the capacity of the boat and to see if the boat had the capacity to transport 19 people, and the condition of the equipment on the boat. There are people who are responsible for this, we have the captain detained,” Salazar told reporters.

Asked about the captain, he stressed that the investigation continues but said, “I can tell you that he had some responsibility.”

Four Mexican tourists died after a boat carrying 19 people capsized or swamped between Cancún and Isla Mujeres, authorities said Tuesday.

Quintana Roo’s state coordination of civil protection department  tweeted Monday evening that a boat search-and-rescue operation was carried out in Isla Mujeres with the help of local agencies and the Mexican navy and that some of the people who were rescued were receiving medical attention.

H igh waves were reported in the area Monday night, and local media reported that the wake of a larger passing vessel may have played a role. The passage between Isla Mujeres and Cancún is notably busy, full of ferries and pleasure craft, many carrying tourists.

One person has died after a double-decker tourist boat started to sink near Blue Lagoon Island in the Bahamas on Tuesday, according to reports.

A 74-year-old Colorado woman was killed, and two other people have been hospitalised after choppy waters started sinking the large boat carrying more than 100 people.

Just before 11am on Tuesday, the Royal Bahamas Police Force was notified of a distressed double-deck passenger boat shuttling tourists from Paradise Island to Blue Lagoon Island, according to a press release obtained by NBC.

While the police and marine support units helped rescue the passengers from the sinking vessel , they found an “unresponsive” woman, who was retrieved from the water, and CPR was performed, the release reportedly continued.

The publicly unidentified woman was taken to Paradise Island Dock, where emergency responders found “no signs of life.”

Chief Superintendent Chrislyn Skippings told The Associated Press that the woman, from Broomfield, Colorado, was on a five-day vacation with her family when disaster struck the catamaran.

Local newspaper, the Nassau Guardian , said they arrived at the scene once passengers were on shore to find that “the woman’s covered body was lying on the vessel that was used for the rescue, and her husband was crouched over her with his head down caressing her.”

Passengers started to jump into the water after the alleged lack of instructions from the crew

A video posted by Kelly Schissel, who was amongst the many tourists who found themselves on the sinking vessel that morning, shows the panic and chaos that ensued while onboard.

In a video that gained 18.9 million views on TikTok, Ms Schissel can be heard saying, “Our boat is sinking, so that’s fun; everybody’s freaking out,” as the camera pans to show the boat tilting heavily to one side.

In the footage, tourists can be heard screaming in distress, many on the tipped-up side of the boat clinging onto poles while the boat slants into the water.

One man is eventually seen jumping into the water with a lifejacket on, prompting many other passengers to follow him.

In a subsequent video, Ms Schissel alleges that there was no order on the boat, as the crew were too panicked to instruct others what to do.

“We started to stop and turn in to go to the Blue Lagoon area; I thought the captain was trying to be silly and whip the [boat] because we all went forward,” she said initially, not thinking anything of the turbulence.

“Then one of the crew members that was downstairs ran upstairs and was crying, freaking out, absolutely balling, grabbing a life jacket,” she continued.

She said that she and the other passengers started putting on their life jackets, but most remained on board initially as they “were waiting for the staff to tell us what to do, which they never did because they were too busy crying or freaking out.”

Becky and Matt Savage, two other passengers on board, told ABC News that they were on the boat with their two sons and also claimed there was no regulation amid the emergency.

Passengers clung on for dear life as the boat started to sink

"[A] passenger yelled, "Lifejackets!" and then chaos broke out," Ms Savage said.

"The lifejackets on the upper deck where we were were not right above us. They were in a bin at the front at the top of the boat, so everyone just smashed towards the front."

When the double-decker vessel started to sink, Ms Schissel said there was only one boat nearby, but the crew’s alleged silence prompted passengers to jump into the water.

Despite the clear skies, Ms Schissel said they landed into “pretty rough waves.”

Several lifeguards and rescue boats came out to the distressed vessel, and along with other nearby boats, the passengers made it to shore on Blue Lagoon Island.

Ms Schissel said they were given spare t-shirts, shoes, food and water, but were transported back to the island they came from on another boat without stopping to tour Blue Lagoon Island after the traumatising ordeal.

Police said that the Royal Bahamas Defense Force also helped with the rescue and nearby pleasure craft.

Authorities said the investigation is ongoing.

At least four people are dead after a tourist boat that was carrying 19 people sank near Cancun, according to the Associated Press .

The captain of the “Diosa del Mar” was detained, per the outlet.

The boat was traveling to Cancún from Isla Mujeres when it "wrecked in the bay between Isla Mujeres and Cancún, when returning to its place of origin," the Isla Mujeres City Council said in a press release. "We express our solidarity with the families of the victims and with the people who were rescued."

Isla Mujeres is a popular tourist island 3.5 miles from Cancún.

Raciel Lopez Salazar, the Attorney General of Quintana Roo, told reporters Tuesday that there were 17 Mexican tourists and two crew members aboard the vessel, per NBC News .

Authorities are trying to determine whether the boat was overcrowded and if rough weather conditions played a role in the tragedy.

“We are analyzing the climatological conditions, the capacity of the boat and to see if the boat had the capacity to transport 19 people, and the condition of the equipment on the boat. There are people who are responsible for this, we have the captain detained,” Salazar said, per NBC News .

Salazar added that the captain, who has not been identified, "had some responsibility" in the deadly incident.

According to AP, many of the passengers were pulled out of the sea by the Mexican Navy and other agencies.

The rescue operation is still underway, therefore, identities have not been revealed nor have the conditions of those rescued.

Terrifying video shows people jump from sinking bahamas boat that claimed life of us tourist.

An elderly American tourist died Tuesday after a ferry carrying cruise ship passengers to the Blue Lagoon Island in the Bahamas began to sink in choppy waters.

The privately operated ferry, which offers popular excursions from cruise ships that stop in the Bahamas, had been headed from Paradise Island in Nassau to the Blue Lagoon Island when it started to sink.

Terrifying footage captured panicked passengers in orange life jackets clinging onto the two-deck ferry as it tilts dramatically to one side.

Passengers appear to fall to one side of the boat as it floats over rocky waters, and in later footage, the tourists can be seen jumping into the ocean.

A 75-year-old American woman from Colorado died in the incident, local police told Bahamas newspaper Tribune 242.

The woman has not been publicly named, and the exact circumstances surrounding her death remain unclear.

The ferry full of tourists was nearing its destination when conditions on the water began to deteriorate, American tourist Kelly Schissel said in a TikTok recapping the horrifying incident.

boat

“One of the crewmembers who was downstairs ran upstairs and was crying, absolutely bawling, and grabbing a life jacket. That’s when everybody was like … this is real, something’s happening,” Schissel said in the TikTok.

As water began to fill the ship’s main deck, passengers put on life jackets and moved to the boat’s top level.

According to Schissel, several crew members were in hysterics over the incident and unable to instruct passengers on what to do.

passengers

“Once we realized we were starting to sink, and we saw the water coming in, people were screaming and people were freaking out, so we all got our life jackets on,” she said. “We were waiting for the staff to direct us on what to do, and they didn’t.”

Other video shows passengers eventually began to jump out of the sinking ship into the bright blue water below.

While it looked beautiful, Schissel said the waters were rough, and many people struggled to keep their heads above the choppy waves.

boat

Eventually, rescue boats arrived.

Several good Samaritans in boats nearby also took in some of the ferry’s passengers, Schissel said.

Two of the boat’s passengers were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, the tour operator told the Maritime Executive.

The circumstances surrounding the 75-year-old woman’s death are currently under investigation.

101 missing after Russian boat sinks

A half-century-old tourist boat with 188 people on board listed and sank quickly in one of the world's largest reservoirs amid wind and rain Sunday, authorities and survivors said, and dozens of children were believed to be among the 101 people missing.

Share story

MOSCOW — A half-century-old tourist boat with 188 people on board listed and sank quickly in one of the world’s largest reservoirs amid wind and rain Sunday, authorities and survivors said, and dozens of children were believed to be among the 101 people missing.

About 30 children gathered in a cockpit in the double-decker Bulgaria moments before it sank into the reservoir on the Volga River, 450 miles east of Moscow, a survivor told the Interfax news agency.

The riverboat was filled with families cruising in the Kuibyshev Reservoir, a reach of the upper Volga that is dammed and forms a broad lake. It was traveling from the town of Bulgar to the regional capital, Kazan.

Divers found the ship on its side at the bottom, about 60 feet down. “According to our divers chances to find people alive are minimal,” said Irina Andrianova, Russian Emergency Situations Ministry spokeswoman, in televised remarks.

Another Volga River tour boat, the Arabella, which was the first to arrive at the scene, found people clinging to debris and life vests, and pulled 82 survivors from the water. The regional emergency ministry of Tatarstan said two men managed to swim to shore. Two bodies had been recovered.

One survivor told Russia’s Vesti 24 television that other ships refused to come to their aid.

“Two ships did not stop, although we waved our hands,” said the man in his 40s, who stood on the riverboat amid weeping passengers, some of them wrapped in towels and blankets. He held another man, who was weeping desperately.

Russian television showed chilling footage of shocked survivors whose relatives were feared dead. One young woman said she lost her 10-year-old daughter.

“We all found ourselves buried alive inside the boat like in a sarcophagus and were trying to get out through the window,” the woman, wrapped in a long towel, said in Kazan’s port. “I was holding her by the hand but then she began to choke and pushed me away.”

The woman added that there were dozens of other children on board.

“Our baby remained there, our baby remained there,” cried a tearful man embracing a woman who buried her head in his chest.

The Volga River is crowded with boats in the summertime, including oil tankers and barges. Last year, a riverboat collided with a barge laden with sand north of Moscow. Then, all the passengers were rescued. Most of Russia’s largest cities are located in the Volga River basin.

River cruises are a beloved summer pastime for Russians, who sometimes book rides through the country’s vast inland waterways that last for weeks. Sleeping cabins are common, as are restaurants and onboard discos.

The boats often stop at uninhabited islands in the river so passengers can disembark and swim.

The Bulgaria sank about two miles from shore. Crews were searching nearby islands and the bank. Television images showed choppy water and an overcast sky.

Interfax cited an unidentified survivor who went ashore when the Arabella docked in Kazan as saying that the boat was carrying many children, and that about 30 of them were gathered in an inside playroom when the boat sank. “I’m afraid many of them died,” the survivor was quoted as saying.

All aboard were believed to be Russian.

The boat belongs to a local tourism company, which had recently canceled trips because of mechanical troubles on the boat, and passengers from a previous outing had complained on a local website that the engines had broken down during their cruise.

It has two decks, elegant brass fixtures and a ballroom, according to archival pictures shown on NTV television news.

A tourism expert said the lack of partitions inside the Bulgaria made it vulnerable to breaches.

“In case of an accident these ships sink within minutes,” Dmitri Voropayev, head of the Samara Travel company, told the RIA Novosti news agency.

Russia’s Union of Tourism Industry said the ship had not been inspected and retrofitted for years, according to the Interfax news agency.

Boat capsizes on Lake Michigan, killing two and leaving one survivor

Notifications to the families of the deceased victims are still pending..

OZAUKEE COUNTY – Two people died and one survived after a boat capsized in Lake Michigan near Port Washington during the evening July 15.

After receiving a mayday call of a sinking vessel, the U.S. Coast Guard launched a 45-foot response boat from Station Milwaukee. A Station Sheboygan crew also responded.

A good Samaritan arrived at the scene to help after hearing a distress call over the radio. They heard a person yelling for help in the water.

A 50-year-old man and a 51-year-old man from Illinois were found unresponsive when other emergency personnel, including Ozaukee County Emergency Management rescue boat and Port Washington Fire Department fire boat, responded.

A 26-year-old man from Beloit was found conscious, who confirmed the distress call and that there were three people on the boat.

All three individuals were transported to the Aurora Medical Center in Grafton.

“This all-hands effort highlights the partnership we have with our local partners, with their help we were able to find all three people from the vessel that sank tonight,” Petty Officer 2nd Class Kimberly Miller, Station Milwaukee Coxswain, said in a news release. “The one responsive person we rescued was also wearing a life jacket, which was critical in buying us time to find them and pull them out.”

Although rescue personnel performed lifesaving efforts, the two unconscious victims did not survive. Their families haven’t been notified yet.

The 26-year-old man rescued is in stable condition, according to the Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office.

The water was about 53 degrees Fahrenheit, and waves reached 2-4 feet high. The boat, a 177 model and 17-foot 2008 Triton fishing boat, was overturned when a wave struck its side, completely submerging it. The boat hasn’t been found.

The Port Washington Police Department and Grafton and Saukville fire departments assisted in this incident as well.

RUSSIA has expelled six British diplomats from Moscow as relations between the UK and the Kremlin sink to a new low.

Vladimir Putin's FSB accused them of spying and seeking to inflict a strategic defeat in Russia.

Putin'a FSB expelled them on 'spy' charges

The timing of the announcement comes as Britain is leading Western efforts to allow Ukraine to deploy long range missiles on targets deep inside Russia, starting with UK Storm Shadow missiles.

Putin warned last night that such a move would be seen as an act of war between Nato and Russia.

It is not immediately clear whether Britain has enforced a tit for tat expulsion.

The diplomats - from the British Embassy’s political department -  are thought to have left Russia early in September.

A spokesperson said: "The accusations made today by the FSB against our staff are completely baseless.

"The Russian authorities revoked the diplomatic accreditation of six UK diplomats in Russia last month, following action taken by the UK government in response to Russian state-directed activity across Europe and in the UK.

"We are unapologetic about protecting our national interests."

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Joe Biden are meeting in Washington DC today for crunch talks on the missile debate.

Putin yesterday warned that granting permission for the Ukrainians to use British and French kit to pound targets deep within Russian territory would mean war.

He said: "This would in a significant way change the very nature of the conflict... It would mean that Nato countries are at war with Russia.”

The ageing despot made the comments to Russian state-controlled TV on Thursday.

Answering a question about the probable outcome, Putin added: "If that's the case, then taking into account the change of nature of the conflict, we will take the appropriate decisions based on the threats that we will face."

But plucky Sir Keir batted away the threat saying: “Russia started this conflict. Russia illegally invaded Ukraine. Russia can end this conflict straight away.

“Ukraine has the right to self defence, and obviously we've been absolutely fully supportive of Ukraine's right to self defence, providing training capabilities.

"But we don't seek any conflict with Russia, that's not our intention in the slightest. But they started this conflict, and Ukraine's got a right to self defence.”

State news agency TASS said of the diplomats: “The FSB stated that it has received documentary materials that confirm the coordination of the escalation of the international military-political situation by Great Britain.

It said "the British Foreign Office Eastern Europe Directorate... has been turned into a special service for inflicting a strategic defeat on Russia."

The six diplomats left Russia weeks ago and are already being replaced, PA reports.

The FSB statement said: "The Russian Foreign Ministry, in cooperation with interested departments, terminated the accreditation of six employees of the political department of the British Embassy in Moscow, in whose actions signs of intelligence and subversive work were found."

It added: "Subsequently, if similar actions are detected among employees of the British diplomatic mission, the FSB of Russia will demand early termination of their missions in the Russian Federation."
