1. 2016 Volkswagen Golf

If you're looking to hit the highway with a couple of friends and explore a new city or two, a compact hatchback is a smart pick. Compacts are inherently maneuverable and if you can find one with good outward visibility, generous interior space and great fuel economy, you're good to go. You won't find a better embodiment of these qualities than the 2016 Volkswagen Golf.

The Golf offers real space for four adults, or five in a pinch, with a handy 22.8 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the rear seatbacks and an almost SUV-like 52.7 cubic feet with those seatbacks folded down. The large windows afford great sightlines in every direction, while the standard 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine produces enough power to slingshot you around an on-ramp without much effort. And yet, it gets 29 mpg combined in EPA testing (25 city/36 highway). This is sensible German engineering at its best.

2. 2016 Toyota Prius

If city touring is in your road-trip plans and you need more space than a compact vehicle can offer, check out the midsize 2016 Toyota Prius. It's a top pound-for-pound contender in passenger space and road comfort, not to mention its unbeatable fuel economy.

Go all-in with the Prius Eco model and you'll get ultra-low rolling-resistance tires along with a slight weight reduction, resulting in 56 mpg combined (58 city/53 highway). That extends fueling intervals to a bladder-challenging range somewhere north of 600 miles. Efficiency aside, this Prius is also more comfortable and rewarding to drive than any generation before it. And its midsize dimensions mean there's plenty of space for people and cargo.

3. 2016 Hyundai Genesis

Maybe you're someone who thinks a road trip — even one that takes weeks and a couple hundred miles a day — should not be a test of endurance. If so, a cushy luxury sedan like the 2016 Hyundai Genesis might suit you.

A base price of $39,700 might sound like it's stretching the definition of "affordable," but that's where this Hyundai's exceptional value comes into play. For the money, the Genesis simply can't be matched for feature content or interior quality, and it comes with industry-leading warranty coverage. The standard, smooth-revving 3.8-liter V6 is the smart choice (the optional V8 plays in a different league), and you can specify rear- or all-wheel drive.

4. 2016 Mazda CX-5

Maybe you're tired of the city because you have to live in one for 350 days a year. In that case, the point of a road trip is to get as far away from cities — or even roads themselves — as possible. We're with you.

The 2016 Mazda CX-5 is a winner here. On the pavement, it's downright sporty for a crossover, with impressive fuel economy to boot. But it can also be equipped with a capable all-wheel drive system for mild off-road exploration. While rock-crawling jaunts may be off the table, the versatile CX-5 should provide more overall satisfaction than a single-purpose off-road vehicle.

5. 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata

For the driver whose trip revolves around roads rather than destinations, a sublime connection between car and driver moves to the top of the priority list. Unfortunately, this kind of connection often comes with a monthly payment that looks more like a mortgage. But the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata is a notable exception.

The Miata provides a lightweight body, a feisty four-cylinder engine, a taut suspension and communicative steering, delivering endless driving fun in a package that's barely big enough to fit two. The cabin may be too cozy for certain body types, and the trunk is limited to 4.6 cubic feet of space, so plan on packing light. But spend just five minutes behind the wheel of the MX-5 and you'll completely understand the appeal.

6. 2017 Ford Mustang Convertible

Summer brings plenty of opportunities to soak up some rays. And if you live in a place that doesn't see sunshine on a regular basis, you'll definitely want to take full advantage of these months.

It's true that the Miata, the No. 5 pick, is a seriously good convertible, but it has real space constraints. So if your passenger and cargo needs are greater, the 2017 Ford Mustang Convertible is another great drop-top option. The Mustang may not be as spry as the Miata, but with double the seats, significantly more trunk capacity and nearly double the horsepower from even the base V6 engine, it compensates nicely in other areas. If you need more power, a turbo four-cylinder and V8 are also available. In any configuration, this is iconic American motoring.

7. 2016 Honda Odyssey

This list would not be complete without today's quintessential road trip vehicle: the minivan. For years, the minivan has provided larger families with a maximally efficient means of traveling together, supplanting the thirsty and unwieldly station wagons.

As in other vehicle segments, there are minivans that stand out from the crowd. Offering seating for up to eight, the 2016 Honda Odyssey is one of our favorites, scoring top marks in interior space and comfort, everyday drivability and even composure around corners. Some high-end features available on the Odyssey include a 12-speaker surround-sound audio system and a 16.2-inch widescreen rear entertainment screen with HDMI connectivity, as well as the industry's first on-board vacuum system. Wrangling the kids could still be a challenge, but convincing them to climb aboard a rolling movie theatre will take far less effort.

8. 2017 Chevrolet Traverse

So you need to haul a lot of people and cargo to faraway places, but you refuse to join the Minivan Alliance. No problem. The 2016 Chevrolet Traverse is a comfortable and unusually spacious three-row SUV that accommodates up to eight passengers and starts at around $30,000.

The Traverse can tow up to 5,200 pounds when properly equipped, which is impressive for a crossover. It also comes with a 288-horsepower V6 engine that can be paired with all-wheel drive. Even with all three seating rows in use, there's still a generous 24.4 cubic feet of cargo space. Folding the second- and third-row seats opens up a whopping 116.3 cubic feet, topping this segment by a wide margin. An all-new Traverse is waiting in the wings and will be substantially smaller, so if you like the road-trip possibilities opened up by that cavernous cabin, grab a current-generation Traverse while you still can.

9. 2016 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel

If the Chevy Traverse's 5,200-pound towing capacity seems puny to you, perhaps the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel's 9,050-lb capacity is more like it. If your road trip involves pulling a trailer, a boat or even a camper, you'll want a truck with enough muscle to make quick work of any route.

The Ram 1500's EcoDiesel V6 provides outstanding fuel economy (20 mpg city/28 highway) along with a healthy 420 pound-feet of torque. The four-door crew cab can seat up to six and is surprisingly pleasant on long hauls thanks to its airy cabin, supportive seats and supple coil-spring rear suspension. Note that the EcoDiesel carries about a $5,000 premium, which nudges even the cheapest diesel-powered crew cab past our price cutoff. But this engine is certainly worth the extra money if towing and fuel economy (or simply extended driving range) are top priorities.

10. 2017 Honda Ridgeline

If you like the utility of a truck but prefer the refined driving character of a car, the 2017 Honda Ridgeline could be the road-trip champion you've been waiting for. Based on the Honda Pilot SUV, the Ridgeline is packed full of versatile features catering to an active lifestyle, so it's a great choice for trips with outdoorsy themes.

The bed of the Ridgeline is where most of the magic happens. A dual-hinged tailgate folds down or swings open from the side to reveal lockable underfloor storage. You can toss your gear in there, or else throw in some drinks and ice to convert it into a fully stocked cooler (the melted ice drains out via a removable plug at the bottom). Also available on top-line models is a 540-watt sound system, paired with the industry's first truck-bed audio system. It makes every stop on your itinerary a party waiting to happen.

We’re still working out where to safely travel in the immediate future, but what’s certain is that after months of staying close to home, we couldn’t be more ready to make a move—which means we're officially on the hunt for the best road trip cars. With gas prices holding steady, there’s no better time to load up your favorite playlists and hit the road, company optional. We’ve gone ahead and done the research for you, assembling a list of some of the best road trip cars to pick up at your local rental agencies to help ensure a seamless and safe trip, whether you’re traveling with your kids, going solo, or looking for an off-road adventure.

For packing in the whole family

It’s only fitting that the brand that first put minivans on American roads is behind the award-winning Chrysler Pacifica (named Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and Family Car of the Year by Cars.com). Ford Mustang

Honda Accord

Ten generations in, the Accord has solidified its spot as one of the most durable and nimble vehicles on the road, a winning combination for a swift, problem-free drive. The quick turn of a dial will let you select a suitable suspension and traction mode for the terrain you’re on and, if you approach water, the 3D-surround camera and wade-sensing system will gauge the depth and allow you to navigate through up to 35 inches. When parked, the rear seats fold down with the touch of a button, and the roof supports a tent and occupants up to a combined 600 pounds.

Subaru Ascent

The Ascent is Subaru’s largest SUV, and it puts that size to good use with a towing capacity of up to 5,000 pounds (enough to haul a small trailer). The generously sized cabin seats up to eight passengers, and the rear seats fold flat to haul extra cargo or to pinch hit as a makeshift bed. Traveling with a group? Volkswagen Atlas

Toyota Prius

The Prius has spent the last two decades accumulating industry accolades, and it’s still going strong. The gas-electric hatchback comes with stellar stats: consistently top-ranked on safety lists, excellent fuel economy (it averages 50 miles per gallon in the city, and 54 miles per gallon on the highway) and a reliable history. The company has also upped the model’s standard features, which now include a mammoth 11.6-inch screen, Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, an integrated backup camera, and a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection. (And you’d be surprised how much you can fit in the trunk.)

Jaguar I-Pace

Be prepared to throw any preconceived notions about “boring” electric vehicles out the window when you encounter Jaguar's I-Pace. In the plush and surprisingly spacious cabin, take a minute to check out the detailed instrument panel, then select dynamic mode for a sporty, full-throttle ride. Before you zoom off, download an app like ChargePoint so that you’ll be able to quickly pinpoint fast-charging stations along your route—though with a 253-mile range, you'll have enough juice to get from, say, Washington D.C. to New York .

But not every car is well suited to life on the road, and when you’re headed out for a long trip, the last thing you want is a car that can’t handle it. When you are ready to embark on a journey around the country, these cars have what it takes to help you enjoy the ride.

A good road trip car must be reliable, practical, capable, and fun, and few automakers satisfy those requirements better than Subaru. We’d love to take a WRX STI cross country, but the fuel-sipping Crosstrek makes our list for its rugged construction and well-rounded character. Plus, there’s plenty of room for speed and spoilers later.

With fuel economy ratings of 27 mpg city and 33 mpg highway, the Crosstrek is an apt choice for couples or small families looking to log some serious highway miles. All-wheel drive is standard, of course, and with 8.7 inches of ground clearance, this compact crossover will go just about anywhere you need it to, on or off the interstate.

With the Fit, Honda proved a good value doesn’t always come with squished proportions and a chintzy interior. And, with the Fit-based HR-V , the Japanese firm added an extra dose of practicality to the mix.

Honda’s smallest crossover boasts 6.7 inches of ride height and an ingenious “Magic Seat” interior layout, which allows passengers to configure the cabin in five different modes — normal, split, tall, utility, and lounge. That means the car can easily ferry anything, whether it be luggage, bikes, tall plants, or even surfboards.

The HR-V’s biggest asset is its relatively low cost, which comes both at the dealer (starting MSRP is $20,620) and at the pump (it returns up to 28 mpg city/34 mpg highway when ordered with front-wheel drive). Throw in a plethora of safety features and you’re all set.

What goes better with a great American road trip than an emblematic American car? Nothing, that’s what. The Ford Mustang GT is a legend through and through, and the sixth-generation model is the most refined version yet. It has the best interior of any pony car before it, and with an independent suspension setup front and rear, this horse can corner with the best of ‘em. Ford recently updated the model with more tech features, too, including an available digital instrument cluster that will let you keep an eye on key road trip metrics such as speed, distance to empty, and the tunes blasting through the speakers.

Let’s be honest, you don’t need a thumping V8 soundtrack for a successful road trip, nor do you need the open wind rustling through your hair. You definitely want them, though, and the Mustang GT Convertible happens to provide both. “GT” does stand for “Grand Tourer,” after all.

For years, electric cars and road-tripping were mutually exclusive; range anxiety kicked in before you got a chance to leave your state. Advances in battery technology make the latest crop of electric vehicles better-suited to long drives. The Tesla Model 3 has up to 322 miles of driving range in its Dual Motor Long Range configuration, so you can drive from Detroit to Indianapolis without needing to stop and charge.

When you do need to fill up, you can rely on Tesla’s growing network of Supercharger stations. There are thousands of charging points in each state so finding one is a breeze, especially if you plan ahead. Clever features — such as in-car gaming and Netflix streaming — will help you pass the time while your car sips electricity.

If a Tesla isn’t your thing, or if the Model 3 is too expensive, the Chevrolet Bolt is another great option for those seeking a zero-emissions road-tripper. It offers 259 miles of range, so it can drive from New York City to Washington, D.C., in ideal conditions, and it’s spacious enough to comfortably carry a full load of passengers and their gear.

You can zap the Bolt’s battery with about 100 miles of range every 30 minutes when it’s plugged into a DC fast charger, a type of station that’s getting much easier to find as America’s charging infrastructure expands, though keep in mind you’ll need a special charging port Chevrolet charges extra for. Alternatively, if you’re not in a rush, the Bolt gains 25 miles of range per hour plugged in when it’s hooked up to a 240-volt level two charger, which you can find outside of many hotels, restaurants, and other businesses.

Ah, the practical Ferrari. The successor to the FF , the GTC4Lusso is a grand tourer in every sense of the word, as its gorgeously-appointed interior and quiet ride are offset by a 681-hp V12 and a trick four-wheel steering system. It does “GT” a bit differently, however, as the three-door configuration and shooting brake profile make this a head-turner in more ways than one.

When it comes to stability, this Belkin car phone holder outperformed the competition. The suction cup, which you apply to your windshield, features a locking mechanism that allows the phone holder to handle more force before dislodging than any other suction cup mounts we tried.

Because windshield mounting is illegal in some states, this pick also comes with a base for attaching the holder directly to your dashboard — but note that its bulkier design may make it difficult to place on cluttered or tight dashboards.

The arm rotates 360 degrees, and the grip can tilt 90 degrees, allowing for easy repositioning of your phone. The pinching mechanism that holds the phone in place was also secure, passing our shake tests with both an iPhone 11 and 14.

iOttie's Easy One Touch 5 offers more functionality than some of its higher-priced competitors. The phone holder can be applied to the windshield or dashboard and features a telescopic arm with a pivoting ball-and-socket joint, allowing for a wide array of viewing angles.

We like that it's designed with a one-touch system that allows you to insert and remove your phone with a single hand. More than 12,500 Amazon reviewers gave it five stars , with many reviewers pointing out that the powerful suction keeps the phone holder in place even on bumpy rides.

Some, however, reported that the dashboard mounting disc works only on perfectly flat surfaces, so if your dashboard has any kind of curve, it's best to choose a different holder.

This wireless car charger connects straight to your air vent to stay in place. It is easy to rotate, allowing you to place your phone in either portrait or landscape mode. We like that it uses MagSafe tech, so your phone will automatically start to charge as soon as you dock it, and we found the magnetic connection sturdy.

The charger itself connects via USB-c, so you will need that port (or an adapter) in order to connect to your car. There’s a rear cable holder to prevent the cord from swinging around when driving, which can help with the sense of clutter — but we did have some testers mention how the cord could get in the way of their dashboard depending on where their car vent was located.

Though we appreciate the innovative nature of this phone holder, it comes at the cost of universality. It's compatible only with iPhones 12, 13 and 14, so it's not suitable for owners of other phone makes and models.

The Airframe Pro offers pure simplicity for those wanting a quick, fuss-free car phone holder experience that blends seamlessly with the rest of the car. It clips directly into car vents, and the clip can rotate 90 degrees so you can use your phone in both portrait and landscape mode.

We found the grip of this product kept our test phones in place even when shaken vigorously , and we liked its cross-compatibility with different phone models , accommodating screen widths of 6.8 to 10.5 cm.

Although this phone holder features a ball and socket joint for angling the phone, it has limited mobility, so there may be fewer locations in your car where you can place it and still see the screen clearly.

This dashboard mount from Anker comes with everything you need to install and wirelessly charge your phone easily. Anker uses its own wireless charging technology, MagGo, which is compatible with all MagSafe tech. It has 15-watt charging capabilities, which is excellent: A typical fast-charging plug-in charger is around 15 to 20 watts.

Our Lab tests showed that this had some of the best magnetic holding capabilities, but if you do not have the proper case, you must remove yours in order to connect your phone.

One tester said it was initially difficult to get the Anker device to stay on their dashboard. You must clean the surface properly, and if it’s not a perfectly flat surface, the holder may not stay secure. It does come with a dashboard pad, so if there are issues installing, make sure to use it.

It is also important to note that this model is compatible only with iPhone 12 and newer that have MagSafe capabilities.

Suuson's mount was easy to assemble, and it can be used on the dashboard, windshield or vent. We were impressed by how wide the grips could extend: It can hold any size phone within its clamps, and the grip was strong and sturdy. This flexibility does mean it is a bigger car phone holder than others on this list, but we like that it's compatible with all types of phones.

It’s also articulated, so it's easy to adjust the angle of the holder, helping you keep your phone out of the way while still able to view the screen.

Take note that there are no charging components involved. So if you want to charge your phone in your car, you need to bring your own cables and connections.

How we test car phone holders

We test car phone holders in the Good Housekeeping Institute Media & Tech Lab and in testers' cars. In the Lab, we measure the grip size of the holders and compare the dimensions to manufacturer claims about compatible phone widths.

Windshield-mounting phone holders were attached to a large window in direct sunlight for six hours to assess the stability of the suction cup under the stress of heat. We then applied force to the arm of the holder and noted how much force was necessary to detach each one.

To simulate bumpy driving conditions, we tested the gripping strength by inserting an iPhone 11 and iPhone 14 Pro and vigorously shaking each holder to see how well it held the phone in place.

Finally, we asked testers to install a phone holder in their car and test any additional functionality, like adjustability and charging capabilities.

What to look for when purchasing a car phone holder

✔️ Placement type: The placement of a car phone holder is a matter of legality, convenience and personal preference.

Windshield-mounted options are appealing in terms of clear visibility while driving, but many states have laws forbidding this placement, so be sure to check your local legislation.
Dashboard mounting is similar to windshield mounting, just in a lower position in the field of view. It may be a good option if your state forbids windshield placement.
Vent clips tend to offer less mobility in terms of angling the phone toward the driver, but they're an easy option to transfer between vehicles.
Cup holder mounts are a great option for those with a busy dashboard or limited vent space.

✔️ Compatibility: Before purchasing, always verify what types of phones the holder can accommodate. For some MagSafe holders, only certain iPhones can be used (and they have to have the proper case!). Some cradle phone holders accept only certain sizes of phones, so while you can use a Samsung, Google or iPhone, you’d still need to make sure the phone's dimensions would fit the cradle itself.

✔️ Connectivity: There are a few different configurations of car phone holders you can utilize.

With a wireless MagSafe holder , the holder — not the phone — is connected to the car. The MagSafe holder then connects to your phone to charge it.
With a wired MagSafe holder , the phone is connected to a cord (which is connected to the car) and then held magnetically by the holder.
A wired cradle holder simply holds the phone between two arms that you can adjust, and you connect the phone to the car via a cord.

Nearly 44 Million Travelers Leaving Town for Unofficial Start of Summer

Second highest memorial day holiday travel forecast since aaa began tracking in 2000.

WASHINGTON, DC (May 13, 2024) – AAA projects 43.8 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Memorial Day holiday travel period*. This year’s total number of travelers is a 4% increase over last year and comes close to matching 2005’s record of 44 million Memorial Day travelers.

“We haven’t seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “We’re projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we’re exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead.”

Road trips are expected to set a record. AAA projects 38.4 million people will travel by car over Memorial Day weekend, the highest number for that holiday since AAA began tracking in 2000. The number of drivers this year is up 4% compared to last year and 1.9% higher than in 2019. Traveling by car is appealing for many people because of the convenience and flexibility it provides. AAA car rental partner Hertz says Orlando, Denver, Atlanta, Boston and Las Vegas are the cities displaying the highest rental demand , with the busiest pick-up days projected to be Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24.

This Memorial Day weekend drivers can expect similar gas prices as last year when the national average was roughly $3.57. Pump prices rose this spring but have held somewhat steady in recent weeks. Prices may creep higher as the summer driving season gets underway. The wildcard remains the cost of oil, and unlike last year, there are now two wars – in the Middle East and Ukraine – that could roil the oil market.

Airports are bracing for a spike in travelers. AAA expects 3.51 million air travelers this holiday weekend, an increase of 4.8% over last year and 9% jump compared to 2019. This will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005, when 3.64 million flew for the holiday as the travel industry finally rebounded post 9/11. This Memorial Day weekend, air ticket prices are comparable to last year. AAA booking data shows a 1% to 2% increase in prices for domestic flights. Several factors play into how much travelers pay for airfare, including destination, number of stops, and fare class. For example, passengers who book nonstop flights with seat selection and carry-on bags included will likely pay more than those who select basic economy with a layover.

Nearly two million people are expected to travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises, and trains. AAA projects 1.9 million people will take these other modes of transportation, an increase of 5.6% compared to last year. “This category took the biggest hit during the pandemic with fewer people taking public transportation or not cruising at all,” Twidale said. “Now – five years later – we’re back to 2019 numbers. Travel demand has been soaring, and long holiday weekends create the perfect windows for getaways.”

INRIX , a provider of transportation data and insights, says drivers leaving Thursday or Friday should hit the road early to avoid mixing with commuters. Travelers going back home on Sunday or Monday should avoid the afternoon hours when return trips will peak.

“Travel times are expected to be up to 90% longer than normal. Travelers should stay up to date on traffic apps, 511 services, and local news stations to avoid sitting in traffic longer than necessary,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX.

Holiday Travel Forecast Methodology  

In cooperation with AAA, S&P Global Market Intelligence (SPGMI) developed a unique methodology to forecast actual domestic travel volumes. The economic variables used to forecast travel for the current holiday are leveraged from SPGMI’s proprietary databases. These data include macroeconomic drivers such as employment, output, household net worth, asset prices, including stock indices, interest rates, housing market indicators, and variables related to travel and tourism, including gasoline prices, airline travel, and hotel stays. AAA and SPGMI have quantified holiday travel volumes going back to 2000. 

Historical travel volume estimates come from DK SHIFFLET’s TRAVEL PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM . The PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM is a comprehensive study measuring the travel behavior of U.S. residents. DK SHIFFLET contacts over 50,000 U.S. households each month to obtain detailed travel data, resulting in the unique ability to estimate visitor volume and spending, identify trends, and forecast U.S. travel behavior, all after the trips have been taken.

The travel forecast is reported in person-trips. In particular, AAA and SPGMI forecast the total U.S. holiday travel volume and expected mode of transportation. The travel forecast presented in this report was prepared the week of April 15, 2024.

*Memorial Day Holiday Travel Period

For this forecast, the Memorial Day holiday travel period is defined as the five-day period from Thursday, May 23 to Monday, May 27, 2024.

AAA Travel Agent Survey Methodology

AAA clubs distributed surveys to a random sample of their travel agents between March 18 and March 29, 2024 to understand recent traveler trends over the past 60 days. 186 AAA agent responses were collected from 13 AAA clubs (representing 97% of AAA membership overall as of February 2024).

Among the myriad of travel perks that can help you save money or enjoy complimentary upgrades, loyalty program membership stands out as a significant one. The second annual Barclays US Consumer Bank’s Travel Rewards and Loyalty Reports delve deep into the loyalty programs and benefits that are most frequently used by travelers, shedding light on their importance in the travel landscape.

Loyalty Program Membership is Important

Of the 1,000 US travelers surveyed by Wakefield Research, 77% report currently belonging to a travel loyalty program of some kind. These respondents report flying by air at least once in the last 12 months and intend to travel again during the next 12 months. Additionally, 89% of respondents indicate being a loyalty member at some point.

The program types include:

Car rentals
Cruise lines
Online booking sites

Roughly 51% join to earn airline rewards, 43% for hotel rewards, and 30% for booking sites. Cruises and car rentals are the smallest programs as they tend to have fewer travel opportunities.

Of the travelers currently enrolled in loyalty programs, 76% cannot imagine taking the caliber of trips they currently do without the benefits. Not having the rewards can mean having to switch travel providers, opt for more affordable accommodations, reduce the trip length, or book a less convenient travel method.

Millennials are most likely to enroll in loyalty programs with an 83% enrollment rate versus a 75% average for Gen X, Gen Z, and Baby Boomers. Further, Millennials are more likely to travel this year.

As travel loyalty programs are so prolific and offer plenty of value for most members, 77% of respondents anticipate traveling more in 2024 than in 2023. Specifically, 79% are leisure trips and 21% are business-related.

With that in mind, below are the most wanted benefits (ranked by highest demand):

Ability to earn and redeem rewards (70%)
Lower costs, reduced fees, and low rate guarantees (58%)
Elite status or perks, free checked bags, priority boarding, etc. (55%)
Improved travel experience through upgrades, lounge access (51%)
Access to experiences like concerts and events (29%)

Travel points are the most valuable benefit of being a loyalty program member or by using a particular credit card rewards program. While points have multiple redemption options, respondents plan on using 65% for flights and 54% for hotels.

Most Valuable Travel Points

Unsurprisingly, airline miles are deemed the most valuable type of travel point. Eighty-nine percent of travelers report that points are essential to their preferred travel style.

Below is the extent to which travel rewards support award travel:

Airline and hotel points typically provide the most value. They can also be the easiest to earn or redeem as there are numerous travel options for domestic and international trips.

The majority of respondents (72%) will be using their travel rewards for travel within the United States this year, although international travel is increasing. Europe (29%), the Caribbean (23%), and Canada or Mexico (22%) or the most popular foreign destinations.

Most Valuable Travel Deals

Travel points are the most valuable perk, but several non-point travel rewards are also worth the membership.

Here are the three most popular discounts and upgrades available to elite members and travel credit card customers:

Hotel deals (71%)
Flight upgrades (70%)
Priority boarding (60%)

Additionally, frequent travelers who take at least five or more flights per year perceive gaining the most value from travel rewards.

Business Travel is the Most Rewarding

These various perks make it possible for the majority of survey-takers to get more value from their rewards programs than they put into them. The success rates vary by travel type and generation:

84% of business travelers (versus 67% of leisure travelers)
79% of Millennials
72% of travel credit cardholders

While business travel is far less common than leisure travel, loyalty membership and travel points are more rewarding for those who can book work trips.

Final Thoughts

9. 2024 Nissan Frontier | MotorTrend Score 7.1

In a field full of fresh midsize competition, the similarly refreshed 2024 Nissan Frontier finishes last among our rankings. It’s a good-looking rig – especially in the nostalgic Hardbody Edition guise – and matches solid towing capability with towing stability. But while its styling is cutting edge, its hardware is anything but – a notable difference from its primary competition. Its handling, ride, transmission tuning, and turning circle are old-school – and not in a good way. One might think the big 3.8-liter V-6 powering the Frontier would be a positive, but instead it offers less real-world performance than the largely turbo I-4 competition and inferior fuel economy. It’s a clumsy truck in some ways, and moreover its competition offers similar towing and payload numbers without feeling as last-century as the Frontier.

8. 2024 Jeep Gladiator | MotorTrend Score 7.5

If fun is more important than practicality, the 2024 Jeep Gladiator is an unbeatable midsize truck proposition. A convertible pickup with incredible off-road capability and mildly terrifying towing manners , the Gladiator is dramatically different from everything else in its class. Punchbowl colors and a lack of on-road refinement showcase just how focused the Gladiator is on play, with work an afterthought at best. While the 3.6-liter naturally aspirated V-6 is currently the only engine option, a 4xe plug-in hybrid variant has been confirmed for 2025, so anyone concerned by the Pentastar's thirst should wait a model year. Payload capability is lower than normal for a midsize truck, as is the competency of the Gladiator’s handling and ride. But those who consider a Gladiator don’t consider its work ability. They buy it because it's awesome.

A new truck that still feels somewhat old-school, the 2024 Toyota Tacoma is likely to be as beloved by the Taco community as its extremely long-running previous iteration was. Now powered by a turbocharged inline-four, this 2.4-liter engine can be had in multiple states of tune or with added power via hybridization in the top trims. The Taco is now built on the TNGA-F platform that underpins almost all of the Toyota and Lexus truck (and truck-based SUV) lineup. New inside and out, the 2024 Tacoma still has an available six-speed manual transmission, and it’s still brimming with available enthusiast-oriented off-road gear with trims like the Trail Hunter. Despite being massively improved from the previous generation, the new Tacoma still doesn’t blow away its likewise-refreshed midsize competition, with a smaller back seat and less refined road manners than trucks like the Ford Ranger .

Among the first unibody-based modern pickups, the Ridgeline never fit in with the crowd – for better or worse. The 2024 Honda Ridgeline is a little bit more mainstream. Meant more for overall practicality than full-on towing and hauling massive weights, the Ridgeline’s payload and towing specs are similar to compact trucks. It’s in the details that the Ridgeline proves its usefulness. The 5-foot bed’s tailgate opens both down or to the side, while a spacious, lockable trunk with a drain plug offers extra storage space – and inside, similar clever storage solutions abound. The 5-foot bed is shallower than other trucks, which limits the volume it can carry, but it also offers the benefit of a lower reach-over height. Like the smaller Maverick and Santa Cruz, the Ridgeline’s trade-off is excellent on-road dynamics for a bit less raw capability.

Almost like an extra trim level on top of the Chevy Colorado, the 2024 GMC Canyon comes standard with some of the best that GM’s other midsize truck can give. Those parts include the 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that powers both trucks, but only in its most powerful 310 hp, 430 lb-ft tune. A 5-foot bed provides good utility, while handling and ride are excellent for a body-on-frame truck. The interior is less than spacious, with the back seat being especially tight. The screens and infotainment are good, and the overall feel is certainly one of a premium product despite some lackluster materials. For the best of all worlds, the AT4X is an excellent machine on and off the pavement, if you can afford it.

The 2024 Chevrolet Colorado was our 2024 Truck of the Year, surpassing all competition with style, capability, and utility. Our favorite midsize truck overall, the Colorado generally has the same positives and few negatives that the Canyon does, but with pricing more people can afford. Its excellent powertrain (in two states of tune), awesome off-road variants, and more overall capability than just about anything else in the class are mitigated only by its somewhat tight interior. There’s only one cab/bed configuration available, but the five-seater layout is what most would opt for regardless.

Hyundai has a genuinely good compact truck in the 2024 Hyundai Santa Cruz . Much as the Maverick is related to its Bronco Sport SUV kin, the Santa Cruz is essentially a Tucson compact crossover SUV with a small truck bed. But while the Maverick has the look of a truck, the Santa Cruz maintains the slicker lines of its crossover sibling and has a less utilitarian feel overall. This doesn’t stop the Santa Cruz from being able to tow and haul more than the more popular Maverick, though the Hyundai’s miniscule 4-foot bed hinders making practical use of all that capability. The Santa Cruz’s carlike chassis means it drives very well, but it’s not as utilitarian as the Maverick – nor does it offer a hybrid powertrain option. Instead, it makes do with a pair of 2.5-liter I-4s: a naturally aspirated unit or a thirsty and expensive turbocharged option.

A new 2024 Ford Ranger has arrived, bringing with it substantial updates while retaining the second generation’s capable powertrain and transmission. In addition to that 2.3-liter turbocharged inline-four, the Ranger Raptor has arrived with a 2.7-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V-6 making 315 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. The Raptor is expensive, but it justifies its price with the off-road capability one would expect from a Raptor model. Back down on Earth, Ford’s midsize entrant starts in the mid-$30,000 range and compares favorability even against the brand-new Toyota Tacoma . Despite both being body-on-frame pickups, the Ranger rides and handles better while offering a better powertrain. The Ranger’s spacious cabin is great, but it lacks the storage options of the Tacoma.

1. 2024 Ford Maverick | MotorTrend Score 9.0

A few do genuinely need the ability to tow or haul more than three tons of weight every day, but for everyone else, the 2024 Ford Maverick is the right truck. Inexpensive, reasonably capable, and extremely efficient, the Maverick effectively maxes out what a compact truck can do. Driving dynamics and ride quality are great, and even the hybrid variant will accelerate with many midsize and full-size trucks. More important, the Hybrid gets roughly double the fuel economy of other trucks in (and near) its class. It’s also the cheapest hybrid on the American market. The Maverick’s $1,500 hybrid option will likely pay for itself over time, but it originally came standard before Ford realized how popular it was. The Tremor off-road trim allows for some trail capability, and all Mavericks have a funky interior with unconventional colors and textures. The more powerful 2.0-liter turbocharged engine option gives the Maverick some extra oomph for those without need for the hybrid's efficiency, made more tempting by the available AWD with the non-hybrid powerplant.

Why Is Car Insurance So Expensive?

Soaring premiums have become a prominent driver of inflation, and insurers say that more increases could be on the way. How did it get like this?

If your car broke down two years ago, it probably became a bigger problem than you bargained for.

A confluence of forces were to blame: The Covid pandemic disrupted supply chains, pushing used car prices to record highs and making spare parts hard to get; out-of-practice drivers emerging from lockdowns caused more severe wrecks; and technological advancements like motion sensors made even the simplest parts, like a fender or a rim, expensive to replace .

Things have since improved for car owners — except when it comes to insurance bills. Car insurers are still raising prices steeply: The price of motor vehicle insurance rose more than 22 percent in the year through April, the fastest pace since the 1970s, according to a report the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Wednesday. According to calculations by the Insurance Information Institute, a trade group, the average 12-month premium for car insurance was $1,280 in 2023, the industry’s most recent figures.

That has made car insurance a prominent factor preventing overall inflation from cooling more quickly, which could force the Federal Reserve to keep interest rates higher for longer even as the prices for many other essential goods and services have slowed.

Geico recently reported a big jump in quarterly profit on higher premiums and lower customer claims. The share prices of other big auto insurers, like Allstate and Progressive, have beaten the rise in the overall market this year.

That has attracted scrutiny from economists . A key reason car insurance costs are rising so fast right now has to do with how the industry is regulated.

How does insurance regulation work?

Insurers are regulated by the states, not the federal government. In all 50 states, insurance companies must follow specific rules about how and when they can raise the price on their policies.

Each state’s laws are broadly similar, and require insurers to ask regulators for permission to raise prices. Insurers have to make a case — with data to back it up — that the increase is necessary and that they will not make too large a profit on the re-priced policies. This application, known in the business as a “rate filing,” involves complicated paperwork that may take weeks or months to resolve.

The data has to include an analysis of loss trends from the past couple of years, as well as projections for replacement costs and profits. If insurers are deemed to profit too heavily, regulators can make them return money to customers.

The threat of returning money is not an idle one. At the height of pandemic lockdowns in 2020, when many cars sat idle, insurers returned almost $13 billion to customers through dividends, refund checks and premium reductions for policy renewals, according to the insurance ratings agency AM Best.

California was one of the most active states: Insurers there returned $3.2 billion to customers in 2020.

Ricardo Lara, the state’s insurance commissioner, “directed the department to do a very close analysis to make sure that drivers weren’t overcharged,” said Michael Soller, a spokesman for the California Department of Insurance. But starting in late 2021, the state became the poster child for a new problem: an epic backlog of insurers’ requests to raise prices.

How a massive paperwork jam explains rising prices.

When the pandemic shut down most economic activity, it messed up insurers’ ability to use the past to predict the future. For months, they were frozen. They did not submit new rate filings to regulators for a spell — until they did, all at once, in the second half of 2021.

The prices of cars and parts were jumping and drivers were back on the roads and crashing left and right after a hiatus behind the wheel.

“You went from this period of incredible profitability to incredible losses in the blink of an eye,” said Tim Zawacki, an analyst who focuses on insurance at S&P Global Market Intelligence. No companies were willing to stick their necks out by offering lower premiums in the hope of winning new business, he said.

“Everyone was together in significantly pushing for rate increases.”

In California, the most populous U.S. state, insurers were getting creamed by expensive claims.

But the state’s regulator did not start approving insurers’ requests to raise rates until near the end of 2022. The backlog grew so large that the average wait time for approvals was longer — by several months — than the six-month policies that insurers wanted to sell.

“When state regulators delay or prevent companies from accurately pricing insurance, insurers may not be able to absorb the costs,” said Neil Alldredge, the president of the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies, a trade group that represents many home and auto insurers. The squeeze can lead insurers to leave some states or stop some business lines, he added. “Inefficient regulatory environments in states like California, New Jersey and New York, combined with inflation and increased catastrophic losses, have left consumers with fewer choices of insurers and higher costs,” he said.

California is still the slowest state in the continental United States for auto insurance rate filings, taking an average of 219 days to approve a price proposal for a personal auto policy, according to S&P data provided by Mr. Zawacki.

“We fight for consumers by analyzing all of the data, not just what insurance companies spoon-feed us,” Mr. Soller, the California Department of Insurance spokesman, said.

The S&P analysis showed that New Jersey, the 11th-most populous state, had the sixth-longest wait time, while New York, with the fourth-largest population, had the 7th-longest wait times.

“The department performs a comprehensive review of requests to amend rates or rating systems to ensure compliance with New Jersey law,” said Dawn Thomas, a spokeswoman for the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance.

Ms. Thomas said the regulator needed to ensure that each proposed premium increase was “reasonable, adequate, and not unfairly discriminatory,” and that sometimes the insurers’ requests needed to be challenged or denied.

A spokeswoman for New York’s regulator declined to comment.

When will the jam clear?

Shortly before the pandemic, the umbrella organization for state insurance regulators, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, formed a team of data scientists to help regulators deal with their rate filings, which has gotten more complicated in recent years.

The data team became fully operational in 2021 and its mission is now to help speed up the review process: 37 states have signed up to use it.

This month, during a call with analysts to discuss Allstate’s earnings, company representatives said they had recently reopened their California auto insurance business after getting permission to charge higher rates. The company still wanted to raise prices in other states.

In New York and New Jersey, for example, “even with the rate approvals that we got late last year, we still don’t feel like we’re at the appropriate rate level to want to grow in those two states,” said Mario Rizzo, the president of Allstate’s property-casualty business.

How much higher will premiums go?

In 2021, insurers’ personal auto businesses started recording losses. According to David Blades, an analyst for AM Best, the industry lost $4 billion in 2021, $33 billion in 2022 and roughly $17 billion last year.

According to Dale Porfilio, the chief insurance officer at the Insurance Information Institute, the trade group, many companies still need to raise prices to make up for those bad years.

Last year, insurers raised auto premiums by 14 percent, the biggest increase in over 15 years. Mr. Porfilio’s best guess is that premiums this year will rise another 13 percent.

“It’s going to take time for every company to get their rates to where they want to be,” he said.
