Little disappointed in movie selection, limited on recent releases. Staff are okay - but I always buy a cheap ticket so not like I expect first class opulence anyway!!!

Boarding was so quick, flight was ahead of time which is great and the pilot spoke clearly and was letting people know everything, amazing, love travelling with you 😊

Cheap flights as you expect with Ryanair. I would take cheaper flights over entertainment and comfort for short haul travel. Main issue is usually delays at airports. In this case we landed roughly 2hr30 later than planned due to earlier delays with the plane. Not the worst I imagine

While this flight from Dublin to Venice boarded on time, its departure was delayed by about an hour because, apparently, there were no demonstration kits on board, and we couldn't depart until the safety demonstration was completed. We were informed that we were in danger of losing our delayed slot if Ryanair engineering didn't provide the kits 'soon', which would have resulted in an additional two-hour delay. Thankfully, we didn't incur that additional delay. It's not clear where the source of this problem lies but it needs to be addressed to ensure it does not recur for other flights in the future.

We each paid for 10kg checked in luggage. Flying out there were no issues sharing one case (20kg). Not so coming back. Additional £48 charge and unable to provide an explanation of why it was ok on one journey but not the other, or indeed what material difference it makes between 2x10kg cases vs 1x20kg case. Scam, and appalling from Ryanair.

Cheap flights as you expect with Ryanair. I would take cheaper flights over entertainment and comfort for short haul travel. Main issue is usually delays at airports. In this case we landed roughly 2hr30 later than planned due to earlier delays with the plane. Not the worst I imagine

While this flight from Dublin to Venice boarded on time, its departure was delayed by about an hour because, apparently, there were no demonstration kits on board, and we couldn't depart until the safety demonstration was completed. We were informed that we were in danger of losing our delayed slot if Ryanair engineering didn't provide the kits 'soon', which would have resulted in an additional two-hour delay. Thankfully, we didn't incur that additional delay. It's not clear where the source of this problem lies but it needs to be addressed to ensure it does not recur for other flights in the future.

We each paid for 10kg checked in luggage. Flying out there were no issues sharing one case (20kg). Not so coming back. Additional £48 charge and unable to provide an explanation of why it was ok on one journey but not the other, or indeed what material difference it makes between 2x10kg cases vs 1x20kg case. Before buying a ticket, be sure that you will have accommodations available. If you can book a hotel that’s within walking distance of a stadium and know the area is safe, that is ideal. Otherwise, check bus and train schedules for the night of your venue, then look at hotels that might be close to bus or train stops.

With tens of thousands of fellow concertgoers leaving at the same time, transportation can get tricky. If you book a room that’s farther from the venue, try to get a rental car instead of vying for a taxi or rideshare after the show. If you do that, just be sure parking will be available. It’s easy to learn how to make friendship bracelets. I had never dabbled in making jewelry before, but now I find great joy in creating friendship bracelets. I created dozens and handed them to fans at The Eras Tour movie.

To make friendship bracelets, I start by choosing the colors I want and which word or phrase I want the bracelet to express. Then I choose colorful beads and pick out all the necessary letter beads.

Next, I cut off elastic string. I find it’s best to use Stretch Magic elastic string because of its strength and durability. To make the bracelets, I cut off a piece of string that’s twice as long as I need so that there is ample room for cutting and tying multiple knots.

Then I tape one end of the string to my workspace, string the beads I have set aside until I feel like the bracelet is complete. Being careful to not let any of the beads slide off the string, I then wrap it around my wrist to see how it fits and then consider whether I am making the bracelet for a wrist that’s likely larger or smaller than mine. (Also, with elastic string, there’s room for a flexible fit.) I adjust accordingly.

As a last step, I make four to five knots in the string to tie off the bracelet. Many fans choose to add a dab of fabric glue to the end of the knot, but I found that got really messy and wasn’t necessary if you make multiple knots. Then I tuck the knots into one of the beads so that it doesn’t show on the bracelet. Then the bracelet is concert-ready!

Keep in mind that there are a lot of other ways to make friendship bracelets that are for more involved and creative that mine. And, if the idea of making friendship bracelets doesn’t sound fun to you, don’t worry. You can buy premade friendship bracelets on Etsy. Some Etsy shops like RainFoxx13 and BonniesBracelet have elaborate, beautiful friendship bracelets that you may want to keep for yourself. Others sell packs of friendship bracelets in bulk.

If you don’t want to trade friendship bracelets, that’s okay, too. The Swiftie community is accepting and supportive, and you still may get several bracelets as gifts.

Wilkinson advised me that the number one thing to bring is a portable phone charger. If you plan on recording video and taking photos, your phone’s battery may die down quickly, and a phone charger can ensure you can keep capturing the memories all night.

Earplugs are a good idea if you’re sensitive to loud noise. If you’re bringing kids along, they are a must. They ensure you can enjoy the music while protecting your ears.

Bring along a cardigan or jacket. Layering is a good idea for a concert during the summer. Although it may be hot in the stadium, you might be chilly on the way home from the show.

You can’t go wrong bringing along hand sanitizer and a travel pack of tissues. Even if you can get through “All Too Well” without tearing up, you may cry at the sheer excitement of the experience. It can be intense in the best way.

If you have tickets that are far back, bring along binoculars to see close-up details.

Don’t come to the stadium with a big bag. If you haven’t attended stadium concerts before, you may not know that you need to carry a clear bag if you want to bring a purse. The issues facing Liverpool fans if they reach Europa League final in Dublin – explained

After Liverpool brushed aside Sparta Prague, they are now just two ties away from the Europa League final in Dublin in what could be Jurgen Klopp’s final match as manager.

The prospect of Liverpool — who were joined in the quarter-finals by other teams with large fanbases including Marseille, AC Milan , Roma and West Ham United — reaching the final at the Aviva Stadium on Wednesday, May 22, has raised concerns about how the city will cope.

This is especially the case because Liverpool, one of the best-supported teams in Europe, have a large and passionate Irish following.

Friday’s draw pitted Liverpool against Atalanta , Benfica against Marseille, Bayer Leverkusen against West Ham, and saw an all-Italian clash between AC Milan and Roma.

Dublin was awarded this year’s Europa League final after the city missed out on hosting four matches at Euro 2020 because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Are there security concerns?

This week, Theodore Theodoridis, UEFA ’s general secretary, admitted there were a couple of sides left in the competition that would present an “extremely challenging” situation.

UEFA has reserved the 82,300-capacity Croke Park stadium, the biggest stadium in Ireland and home of Gaelic sports finals, as a possible fan zone, but they fear that might not be enough.

Theodoridis said: “We are working on this, together with the local authorities and Football Supporters Europe. If we do get to one of those scenarios, we will also go to the supporters of the clubs involved to find the best solution.

“The biggest problem we have now is whether Croke Park would be big enough because we think we would need more alternatives for public viewing for the people who will be in Dublin. It’s not an easy operation and it is just for a couple of scenarios which would make it extremely complicated — especially with clubs who have a large fanbase in Ireland.”

However, one of those clubs who would have brought a big following, Rangers — they took around 200,000 fans to the Manchester final in 2008 that was marred by trouble when a big screen in the fan zone blacked out — were knocked out by Benfica. They lost 1-0 at Ibrox having drawn the first leg 2-2.

Theodoridis said UEFA was waiting to see who made the semi-final before involving the fanbases in those discussions.

UEFA’s website says there will be a fan festival at Dublin Castle from 11am to 10pm on the day before the final and then from 10am to 5pm on May 22, with a chance to mingle with the former Manchester United player John O’Shea, who is the Europa League final ambassador. At the moment, it is listed as a free event, but tickets may be required, with an announcement to come.

When asked about potential security concerns, a Football Association of Ireland (FAI) spokesperson said “contingency plans” were in place.

They said: “Dublin is excited and ready to host a successful UEFA Europa League final, ensuring that the finalist clubs and their supporters experience a professional and warm Irish welcome. As one of the biggest club football matches in the world, this is a genuine major event and, as such, we scenario plan for all eventualities.

“In the case of significant demand, we have contingency plans in place to cater for all scenarios, which include additional viewing sites, with all local stakeholders focused on delivering a successful final for UEFA. We wish all the clubs involved in the competition the best of luck and we look forward to working with UEFA over the coming months, finalising our preparations and getting ready to welcome thousands of football fans to our city in May.”

Meanwhile, a police spokesperson added: “As with any major event that takes place in the jurisdiction, a Garda Siochana (Irish police force) will liaise with all relevant stakeholders and an appropriate operational policing plan will be put in place.”

How many tickets will be available?

The final is being held at the 51,700-capacity Aviva Stadium.

In previous years, Europa League final tickets have gone on sale towards the end of April — this year the semi-finals are played on Thursday, May 2 and May 9 — with a ballot application lasting a week. All tickets for the final will be mobile tickets and delivered on the UEFA mobile tickets app.

Hospitality packages on UEFA’s website are sold out, despite being priced between €740 (£632) and €1,090 (£931) per person. This includes a welcome drink and hospitality three hours before kick-off and 90 minutes after the game.

The Aviva Stadium last hosted the final in 2011, when Porto defeated Braga 1-0.

To give an indication of how the tickets will be allocated: for last’s year final at the 63,000-capacity Puskas Arena in Budapest, Roma and Sevilla received 15,000 each. The remaining tickets go to other/local fans, UEFA, UEFA’s member national associations, commercial partners and broadcasters.

Accommodation issues

The final may be more than two months away, but accommodation in the city is selling out quickly.

For the night of the final, 98 per cent of places to stay on Booking.com in Dublin are listed as unavailable.

One city centre hostel is offering a bed in an eight-bed dormitory, with a shared bathroom and toilet for £236 on the night of the final. To book a night at the three-star Gardiner Lodge bed and breakfast in the centre of Dublin costs £514, while a junior suite at the Temple Bar Hotel is £945.

There appears to be more availability on Airbnb, but some hosts are charging more than £1,000 a night to stay in a city centre apartment — around 10 times the standard price.

How expensive is it to get to Dublin?

Direct flights from Liverpool to Dublin on the morning of the final (to allow plenty of time before the match) and returning the next day are more than £300. There are still cheaper flights from Liverpool to Belfast, Northern Ireland, a two-hour drive away from the Republic of Ireland capital. Liverpool fans could fly cheaply to Ireland West Airport Knock in County Mayo the day before the final and then drive three hours to Dublin.

There is also the option to take the 3hr 30m ferry from Holyhead, Wales (a two-hour drive from Liverpool), to Dublin — but those have all sold out on May 22. There is still some availability for the crossing the day before and this is around £90 for a return.

Flying from Manchester to Dublin is more cost-effective — but still more than £200. There are cheap flights from Manchester to Shannon, Cork and Belfast — albeit all of those involve a two-hour-plus drive to Dublin.

From London, return flights to Dublin are presently around £100 to £150.

Will history repeat itself at a UEFA final?

In recent years, UEFA have come under fire for their inadequate planning for their showpiece events, while the issues faced by away fans in Europe this season have been numerous.

Nowhere was this more apparent than in the shambolic organisation that overshadowed the Champions League final in Paris in 2022. There were chaotic scenes as fans tried to enter the Stade de France, with a failed ticketing system and security operation resulting in dangerous crushes around the ground.

Many fans were tear-gassed by heavy-handed police officers. Meanwhile, after the match, hundreds of supporters were subjected to random attacks by local gangs as they attempted to make their way home.

UEFA and the French authorities initially tried to pin the blame on ticketless fans. However, an independent review in February last year found UEFA must “bear primary responsibility for failures which almost led to a disaster .” The review added that trying to blame ticketless fans was “reprehensible”.

There was criticism of last year’s Champions League final in Istanbul, where fans were left stranded after the game amid a scramble for the late-night shuttle bus back into the city. Supporters complained that there was no water in the stadium.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin later admitted “not everything was perfect” with the final at the Ataturk Stadium, located almost an hour from the city centre.

Meanwhile, Rangers fans who attended the Europa League final in Seville in 2022 against Eintracht Frankfurt complained of overzealous policing and a lack of food and water in almost 40C (104F) heat that led to people fainting.

Disorder tarnished the UEFA Euro 2020 final between England and Italy at Wembley Stadium when thousands of ticketless fans tried to force their way into the ground. The independent review by Baroness Louise Casey of Blackstock, in December 2021, said a day that should have been a celebration ended up being “a source of national shame” and was only a few “near misses” away from turning into a tragedy.

Northern lights dazzle over UK, Europe and across the hemisphere

Aurora borealis sightings further south than usual from Ireland and Britain to Czech Republic and Germany as solar storm hits Earth’s atmosphere

The aurora borealis has lit up the night sky with rare sightings across the UK, Europe and the northern hemisphere.

The northern lights were spotted in Whitley Bay on the north-east coast; Essex; Cambridgeshire; and Wokingham in Berkshire. They were also sighted in Suffolk, Kent, Hampshire and Liverpool.

Kathleen Cunnea, in Great Horkesley, Essex, said: “It was absolutely stunning to see.”

Sightings were reported in Ireland, where the weather service Met Éireann posted images of the lights over Dublin and above Shannon airport in County Clare.

Met Office spokesman Stephen Dixon said on Friday: “Although the shorter nights will limit the visibility window, there’s a good chance to see the aurora, particularly on Friday night and especially in Scotland, Ireland and parts of northern England and Wales.

“There could even be visibility further south if you have the right equipment.

“Those conditions could continue on Saturday night but we still have to work out some details on where exactly that will be.”

Dixon said the combination of clear skies and enhanced activity from the sun reaching Earth would improve the chances of seeing the display.

“I feel like I am having a religious experience – or an alien abduction. Not sure which,” science teacher David Boyce tweeted from England. Another user shared a photo and said Edinburgh in Scotland felt like “a different planet tonight”.

Aurora displays occur when charged particles collide with gases in the Earth’s atmosphere around the magnetic poles.

In the northern hemisphere, most of this activity takes place within a band known as the aurora oval, covering latitudes between 60 and 75 degrees. When activity is strong, this expands to cover a greater area – which is why displays can be occasionally seen further south.

In the US, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa) issued a rare severe geomagnetic storm warning on Friday. It alerted operators of power plants and spacecraft in orbit to take precautions. Noaa said the storm could produce northern lights as far south as Alabama and northern California.

“For most people here on planet Earth, they won’t have to do anything,” said Rob Steenburgh, a scientist with Noaa’s space weather centre. “That’s really the gift from space weather – the aurora.”

The “very rare event” is being caused by a large sunspot cluster that has produced several moderate to strong solar flares since Wednesday morning, Noaa said. That meant the lights could be seen further south than usual.

Steenburgh and his colleagues said the best aurora views might come from phone cameras, which were better at capturing light than the naked eye.

Even when the storm is over, signals between GPS satellites and ground receivers could be scrambled or lost, according to Noaa. But there are so many navigation satellites that any outages should not last long, Steenburgh said.

It is all part of the solar activity that’s ramping up as the sun approaches the peak of its 11-year cycle. The storm is anticipated to peak as at least seven coronal mass ejections converge and race towards Earth late on Friday or early on Saturday, according to an update from Noaa . But geomagnetic storming was “highly likely” to persist through the weekend, the agency said.

Experts suggest finding a location with minimal light pollution and looking north for the best sightings of the aurora borealis. But many of the enthused viewers who shared sightings on social media did not have to look hard at all.

“Pictures of everybod[y]’s #aurora experience is the best, most wholesome thing I’ve seen on Twitter in a long time,” one user wrote , calling the experience “magic”. “Everybody just coming together to appreciate nature.”

Nasa said the storm posed no serious threat to the seven astronauts aboard the International Space Station. The biggest concern was increased radiation levels, and the crew could move to a better shielded part of the station if necessary, according to Steenburgh.

Increased radiation also could threaten some of Nasa’s science satellites. Extremely sensitive instruments would be turned off if necessary to avoid damage, said Antti Pulkkinen, director of the space agency’s heliophysics science division. Several sun-focused spacecraft were monitoring all the action.

“This is exactly the kinds of things we want to observe,” Pulkkinen said.

Scotland to Dublin, via Belfast: This is not a visible migrant route. There are no identity checks

Buchanan Street bus station, in the centre of Glasgow, is the size of two football pitches. It is busy. Coaches pull in and out constantly and there is a mill of people in the main hall.

In the middle of all the bustle there is a bronze statue that depicts a young couple embracing. The woman is wearing a tam o’shanter. The man has a suitcase by his side. It encapsulates all the emotion of the moment before departure to a distant place to make a new life, a scene familiar to generations of Scottish, and indeed Irish, people.

Nearby is Bay 57, where about two dozen people are waiting for a bus. At 8am it pulls up. Its destination is Cairnryan, the ferry port for Northern Ireland. For some who arrive at Bay 57 the port, 90km away in western Scotland, will be the departure point for the final leg of another long-distance journey in the hope of starting a new life. In their cases, there origin point has been Africa, or the Middle East, or Central Asia.

Two ferry companies make frequent crossings from Cairnryan to Larne and Belfast. From there travellers can take a bus or train to Dublin, crossing the border near Newry. It’s a long journey that takes the guts of a day, compared to a short flight from Britain into Dublin.

Last month, Minister for Justice Helen McEntee claimed that 80 per cent of those applying for asylum in Ireland were coming over the Border from the North. They were taking advantage, she argued, of the Common Travel Area between Ireland and Britain where citizens can travel freely between both countries, without having to show documents.

If McEntee is right, some 5,000 people have come across the Border since the new year – more than 320 a week. In comments made while visiting the Middle East last month, Tánaiste Micheál Martin attributed the surge in part to the British government’s plans to transfer migrants to Rwanda to process their applications.

Asylum seekers who arrive in to Ireland on this route are not conspicuous. It’s not a visible migrant route like the Darién Gap, a notorious narrow corridor between Colombia and Panama, where 500,000 people a year pass through as they travel north.

There are up to 12 sailings a day from Scotland, numerous domestic flights from English cities, and frequent bus and train journeys to Belfast and Dublin. If McEntee’s 80 per cent figure is correct, it equates to an average of 45 migrants crossing into the Republic each day. Spread across so many modes of travel, with journeys undertaken individually or in small groups, that movement of people is very difficult to track.

At 10.40am at the ferry terminal, a long snake of cars and trucks waits to board the Stena Superfast VIII. Hundreds of passengers board this way. Asylum seekers are more likely to be foot passengers, carrying luggage. At most there are 35 foot passengers on this sailing.

The sailing to Belfast is uneventful as is the journey to the long-distance bus station under the shadow of the Europa Hotel in the city centre. As people board the Dublin bus, it’s not possible to tell who, if any, will claim asylum after crossing into the State. The bus arrives in Dublin that evening – there have been no identity checks at any point of the journey.

The Scottish Refugee Council says it has seen no evidence of the trend of people travelling through Scotland to get to Ireland. Daniel Holder, director of the Belfast-based Committee on the Administration of Justice, says the same.

Referring to McEntee’s comments, Holder says: “The figures are not based on the detection of people coming over the land border, but on the number of people making in-country, rather than in-airport, claims.

“It’s a leap. There could be all sorts of other explanations in terms of changing trends,” he adds.

Whatever the accuracy of the figures, it is clear that the route is being used. Based on conversations with about 50 asylum seekers in Dublin over two days, most of them recently arrived, it was clear that significant numbers came from the UK.

Late on Tuesday night, near the Light House Café in Dublin’s Pearse Street, a drop-in centre for homeless people, three young Nigerian men sit on steps, their suitcases at their sides. All have arrived in the city that day via the ferry.

“We came over on the Superfast,” says one.

None were willing to give their names but they say compatriots have taken the same route. For now, they have been given tents by the Light House but do not know where to go.

“Do you know of any parks around here?” one asks.

Earlier that day, long rows of pop-up tents, covered in blue tarpaulin, lined both banks of the Grand Canal near Mount Street. Many of the tents were occupied by Palestinian, Syrian, Afghan and Jordanian men, all recently arrived.

Most arrived from the UK but not all came through Northern Ireland, with some saying they came directly to Dublin by ferry from Liverpool or Holyhead. A Nigerian man said he had paid people-smugglers and was put on a flight to Belfast, while two other men said they flew in to Dublin Airport.

Khyber is a 28-year-old Afghan who arrived in Dublin on Monday. He came into Dublin on a ferry from Holyhead, having spent “a few weeks” in London, and a long period before that in the French port town of Calais.

He did not like England. “The UK really treats asylum seekers with something that is against all human rights, especially its Rwanda policy,” he says. “It’s a kind of psychological torture.”

He has travelled with his friend Abdul Rashid (28), a law student, who hopes to get status in Ireland that will allow him to go back to university. Both left Afghanistan soon after the Taliban came to power in 2021.

Over two days, The Irish Times meets men from Somalia, Sudan, Zimbabwe, Burundi, Morocco, Egypt, Palestine, Algeria, Swaziland, Jordan, Pakistan, Vietnam and even one from South Korea.

Most who arrive in Dublin have, against the odds, made determined journeys from home countries riven by conflict, climate change or poverty.

On Tuesday night, the Light House was inundated, with more than 400 people seeking assistance. It ran out of tents and sleeping bags.

Many of the men using the service say they have been on the move across continents for three years or more.

Abdul Rashid lists the countries he has been through since 2021. “I have gone through Turkey, Bulgaria, Serbia, Austria, Switzerland, France and then the UK,” he says.

His friend Khyber has had a rootless, stateless, peripatetic existence since he escaped to Iran and then Turkey in 2001.

“I crossed borders just by myself. There were a lot of dangers even at night. I had to go through forests and mountains into Bulgaria. There were times I did not have enough money. I was attacked. I was exposed to storms. There were times I lost my hope, did not know if I would be alive or not,” he says.

The accounts of others differ in detail but are the same in essence: hundreds of people setting out on long, complicated journeys, with little other than a few possessions and hope of a better life.

Aubrey McCarthy, founder of Tiglin homeless services and the Light House Cafe, notes how vulnerable these people are.

“They have no accommodation, their English is poor. They’re here for protection and they haven’t a clue what is happening. They’re being given a sheet, told there is no accommodation, given a card, and then sent to us to get a tent,” he says. “What we have tried to do is add a bit of dignity.”

Within Government, there is concern that the change of public sentiment puts pressures on politicians to support hardline policies rather than keeping a centrist course.

“People forget that 450 women and children come in each week and we have found accommodation for them all,” says one senior source with knowledge of Government thinking.

“We will end up with Brexit and Rwanda-type policies if we don’t handle it humanely. These are people applying for international protection. We are obliged under law to respect that.”
