The Revered USS Texas: A Centenarian Battleship's Journey Through Wars and Restoration
T he USS Texas, a formidable name in naval history, continues to ride the waves of time, now set to reemerge as a museum piece reflecting the rich legacy of maritime warfare. In the twilight of its service, the USS Texas stands as the sole surviving battleship to have witnessed the tumult of both World Wars.
Her journey began with a launch in 1912, just as the world was pivoting toward a global conflict. Initially providing support in the Veracruz incident without firing a shot, the USS Texas came into her own during World War I, contributing to convoy missions and blockade duties. After the war, she pioneered advancements, becoming the first American battleship to launch an aircraft from her decks in 1919. The interwar period saw substantial upgrades, fortifying her for the trials of World War II, where she played pivotal roles from Operation Torch in North Africa to the momentous D-Day invasion. And even as she advanced to Pacific theatres like Iwo Jima and Okinawa, she stood resilient against kamikaze attacks, her guns roaring in defense of the troops ashore.
As her service ended, the USS Texas transitioned from a weapon of war to a guardian of history. She became the first permanent floating museum in the U.S., an emblem of honor and remembrance for the valiant who served. However, time and the elements wrought their toll on the venerable ship. By the 21st century, the leaks and decay underscored the urgent need for restoration.
August 2022 saw the USS Texas, embark on a significant overhaul. Hauled to the Gulf Copper shipyard in Galveston, she underwent vital surgery beneath the waterline. filling small holes, doubling the steel in certain sections, and replacing the torpedo blisters.
Currently in dry dock, this centenarian vessel is poised to return to the water in early 2024. Then, the painstaking process of repainting her superstructure and restoring her interior will begin, ensuring that the spirit of the ship is preserved.
The State of Texas is spending $60 million on the project. The total cost is estimated at $75 million. Fundraising is underway for the remaining money. The next big decision is where to dock the Texas permanently, a move that won’t take place until late 2024 or early 2025. Travis Davis, the foundation’s vice president of ship operations, says by the time Texas once again welcomes visitors aboard, the ship will boast a reimagined interior: holograms of actual crew members and virtual reality goggles to simulate battle conditions. “One thing we’re trying to do is make it more immersive—using sight, sound, smell—so you can see what it was like to be on a battleship like this.”

Guide to Battleship Texas State Historic Site
TripSavvy / Vincent Mercer
Houston is a large city, full of sites to see and things to do . Houston has everything from natural attractions to modern museums to historic sites. In fact, one of the most historic sites in Texas is located just a short drive outside Houston—the San Jacinto Battleground where Texas won its independence from Mexico. Berthed just a short stroll from the San Jacinto Battleground is another piece of Texas history: the Battleship Texas. This historic ship was moved to the San Jacinto Battleground in April 1948. Today, it is open to the public as the Battleship Texas State Historic Site.
Commissioned to be built over a century ago—in June 1910—the USS Texas is one of the longest-serving Naval vessels in United States history. Today it is the only surviving vessel to have served in both World War I and World War II. Since it is open to public tours, visiting the Battleship Texas is a great way to get a feel for the history of the two "great wars" that secured the United States' place as a world superpower.
Battleship Texas is classified as a "New York Class Battleship," which means it was part of the fifth series of super-dreadnought battleships built for service in the U.S. Navy that eventually served in World War I and World War II. There were two "New York Class Battleships"—the USS New York and the USS Texas. This pair of ships was the first to use 14-inch guns. These battleships were commissioned in 1910 and launched in 1912. Following service, the USS New York was used as an atomic weapons target and, ultimately, sunk. The USS Texas, however, was donated, refurbished, and preserved as a public historic site .
After launching in 1912, the USS Texas was commissioned in 1914. The first action the battleship saw was in the Gulf of Mexico following the "Tampico Incident," which was a disagreement between the United States and Mexico that resulted in the United States' occupation of Veracruz. Beginning in 1916, the USS Texas began service in World War I. The ship and crew were on hand in 1918 for the surrender of the German High Seas Fleet. In 1941 the Battleship Texas entered service in World War II. Among the highlights of the USS Texas' service in WWII include transmitting General Eisenhower's first "Voice of Freedom" broadcast, transporting Walter Cronkite to assault on Morocco where he began his war correspondence, taking part in the D-Day invasion at Normandy, and providing gunfire support at both Iwo Jima and Okinawa .
After World War II, the USS Texas returned to Norfolk, Virginia; was briefly relocated to Baltimore, Maryland ; and finally towed to the San Jacinto State Park and Historic Site where she was decommissioned in April 1948. From that time on, Battleship Texas has served as a permanent public memorial and historic site. Battleship Texas underwent major restoration from 1988–1990 and a smaller restoration in 2005.
Today, visitors to the Battleship Texas State Historic Site are allowed to board and tour the ship. The Battleship Texas is open daily seven days a week. The site is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day. It's also available for conference use for either half-day or full-day use. Children 4 and under as well as active and retired military are free. Group rates are also available. Overnight stays can also be arranged for groups of 15 or more people.

Historic Battleship Texas returns to the water after 18-month-long dry dock repair
GALVESTON, Texas (KTRK) -- The historic Battleship Texas began the process of undocking on Tuesday morning and will be back in the water for the first time in 18 months.
The re-floating process marks the next step in the ship's $75 million restoration.
PREVIOUS REPORT: Battleship Texas enters $15M restoration phase as it gets closer to calling Galveston, 'home'
Over the next 18 to 24 months, crews will be replacing the deck superstructure and interiors.
Battleship Texas had been drydocked at Gulf Copper Dry Dock & Rig Repair's shipyard for $21 million worth of extensive repairs since August 2022. During that time, crews replaced over 700 tons of steel, painted the hull, and performed quality control checks, according to the Battleship Texas Foundation .
Before it was moved to Galveston for repairs, the iconic 122-year-old Dreadnought -- which served in both WWI and WWII -- called the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site home for over 70 years.
The ship is expected to reopen in a new home sometime next year.

The KIDD is just completing repairs following the April 11 kamikaze hit that killed thirty-eight of her crew off of Okinawa. It is the days before television, plastic, OSHA, and warning labels on everything. It is back when personal safety was a matter of alertness and common sense.
The KIDD is a 1945 ship, so exercise caution as you visit. It is six days before the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Most of the crew are ashore enjoying their last stateside liberty. The remainder are readying the ship for the war’s final campaign–the invasion of Japan. Over 350 ships were sunk or damaged at Okinawa, and rumor has it that the invasion of Japan will make Okinawa look like a Sunday picnic…
