Some medicines can be hard to find in Vietnam and many are fake.

The legal status and regulation of some medicines prescribed or bought in the UK can be different in other countries.

Vietnam has restrictions on medicines it classifies as ‘addictive’ or ‘psychotropic’. These include medicine used to treat of addiction, anxiety, depression, insomnia and other conditions.

It is illegal to have more than the amount prescribed by a doctor for 7 days (addictive medicine) or 10 days (psychotropic medicine). You should carry the prescription with your medication and a letter from your doctor stating how much of the medication you need during your trip.

The letter can be in English and should:

include your name and age
list the medicine name, volume and dosage
include the doctor’s signature and address

If you’re unsure if your medication falls within these categories or you need to bring more medication than is usually allowed, contact the Vietnamese Embassy in the UK before travelling.

When it comes to sheer variety, Vietnam is in a class of its own. One day you could be in the buzzing streets of Hanoi, where the smell of coffee mingles with the heady aromas from a thousand street-food carts; the next, drifting on a colourful junk through the dreamlike limestone landscape of Halong Bay open-mouthed at the drama of it all. Other natural delights include an array of powder-soft beaches, at their brochure-worthy best in and around Nha Trang, Danang, Mui Ne and Phu Quoc, to mention just a few, and the jungle-blanketed mountains of the north beyond Sapa, home to some of the nation’s ethnic-minority hill tribes.

This scenic splendour is more than matched by the reminders of a gripping history. You can step back in time to the age of the Champa kingdom at its atmospheric ruined capital, My Son; wander the ancient lantern-lit streets of another UNESCO-listed site, Hoi An, where Chinese and Japanese merchants once came to trade; or float along the Perfume River in Hué to admire imperial palaces, pagodas and tombs. Meanwhile, the darker side of 20th-century events is movingly, and unflinchingly, marked at Ho Chi Minh City’s War Remnants Museum and the claustrophobic Cu Chi tunnels where the Viet Cong soldiers hid out.

As for the country’s intangible cultural heritage, you’ll encounter it in everything from the food to the traditional handicrafts. You could spend hours in colourful markets or Hanoi’s characterful Old Quarter browsing for silks, silver jewellery and embroideries, pausing to try out local specialities from French-inspired banh mi sandwiches to scented noodle soups flavoured with lemongrass.

It’s hard to think of a more enduring souvenir of a visit to Vietnam than being able to make some of its best-loved dishes back home. On this half-day culinary exploration, you’ll start at Hoi An’s lively market, with its heady sights, sounds and smells, where you’ll meet some of the stallholders and learn about the ingredients you’ll be using later. From here, it’s a scenic 25-minute boat ride along the river to the Red Bridge Cooking School - be sure to have your camera to hand. Following a tour of the school’s herb garden, you’ll hear the story behind some famous national and local dishes before the cooking begins in earnest. After a demonstration from the resident chefs, you’ll prepare dishes such as cao lau, made with yellow noodles, pork and pickled hot peppers, and mi quang, another favourite local noodle speciality, before sitting down to eat what you’ve cooked for a memorable lunch.

Vietnamese Lantern Making Workshop (from Hoi An or Danang)

There are colourful hanging lanterns everywhere you look in Hoi An’s atmospheric Old Town, a picturesque legacy of the days when this once-important port attracted merchants from China and Japan. On this engaging hands-on workshop, you’ll learn about how the craft took hold here and evolved in its own unique way, gaining an insight into the region’s history and culture along the way. Then it’s time to make your own example, from choosing the shape and picking the silk to learning how to glue it all together and smooth out any creases. At the end of the class, you’ll head off on a short walk around Hoi An - carrying your precious new creation - where you’ll be able to truly appreciate the skill that has gone into making the many lanterns that dot the city. And if you’re wondering how you’re going to get your handiwork home in one piece, you’ll be pleased to know that it’s conveniently foldable.

Hoi An’s Highlights

Hoi An is a wonderland of international influences, particularly in its delightful – and UNESCO-listed – Old Town which was once a bustling centre of trade. This guided walking tour is a great way to get your bearings and find out more about its layers of time. Highlights include a visit to a traditional house and the Hoi An Museum, a trove of local treasures collected through the ages. You’ll also visit Cau Temple, which is commonly referred to as the Japanese Covered Bridge and finish your exploratory morning with a boat trip along the Thu Bon River for a different view of the city.

Local Life Cycling Adventure

A glimpse of rural life provides an unbeatable insight into a country and its culture. And it gives a chance to take a break from the buzz of the city. From Hoi An or Danang, you’ll head into the countryside and cycle through the countryside to the fascinating Tra Que vegetable village, a settlement where the focus is on growing some of the highest quality produce in the region. As well as meeting farmers and hearing about their methods you’ll have the opportunity to get hands on and join in with raking, sowing, watering and tending the vegies. Following your work in the garden, you’ll be treated to a therapeutic foot bath and then help prepare lunch alongside a local family. Hue’s Highlights in a Day

Vietnam’s former capital, which is set on the banks of the Perfume River, is a surprising city that doesn’t seem to get the same attention as Hoi An, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. This full-day exploration, available from Hoi An, Danang or Hue itself, gives you the perfect chance to uncover its charms. The tour starts off at the Minh Mang Tomb, the tranquil final resting place of a 19th-Century Nguyen Dynasty leader. Next up is the towering Thien Mu Pagoda which has seven ever-decreasing storeys, followed by a trip back along the river on a traditional dragon boat. The highlight of the day is the visit to the sprawling walled Citadel and the Imperial City, the former capital of Vietnam. Saigon Street Food By Vespa

Plunge into Saigon’s dynamic night-time scene local-style as you zip between some of its buzziest foodie haunts on a vintage Vespa. Riding pillion behind an expert driver, you’ll begin the evening with a tour around several vibrant downtown districts, passing some of the city’s must-see sights. After pausing for a drink and a spot of people-watching at a neighbourhood café, you’ll head for one of Saigon’s best stalls for banh mi, a stubby baguette sandwich with an array of delicious classic fillings. The next stop is a bustling night flower market, ablaze with colour, followed by a taste of traditional rice pancakes and seafood at a popular restaurant. No gourmet experience is complete without something sweet to finish things off, so the final tasting of the evening is Vietnamese che - a sort of dessert soup - which comes in a dizzying range of varieties.

Cu Chi Tunnels Tour

Explore a fascinating side of Vietnamese history in the countryside to the north of Ho Chi Minh City. During the Vietnam War, Viet Cong communist fighters dug a 250km-long network of tunnels here in which they could hide for long periods, store food and weapons, communicate with other resistance groups and more. For this visit, you’ll travel by private transfer straight to Cu Chi, where you’ll learn all about these extraordinary relics of the country’s past. You’ll hear about the challenging conditions in this three-level underground “village” at the time, from the darkness and foul-smelling air to invasions of snakes and scorpions, but also the ingenuity that enabled the creation of subterranean hospitals, kitchens and wells. A short section of tunnel has been widened a little (and cleared of insects), so brave and curious visitors can get an insight into what life was like below ground for themselves. From here, you’ll return to Ho Chi Minh City in time for lunch (not included).

Good to know The heat and humidity make the narrow tunnels even stuffier than you’d imagine possible, so don’t feel you have to experience them if you’d rather not.

Saigon's Highlights in a Day

A fantastic way to get to an introductory view of one of Vietnam’s largest cities, or explore if you are short on time, is by taking this private, guided tour. Begin in the historic heart of the city and walk along Dong Khoi Street, a District 1 thoroughfare once known as Rue Catinat which is lined with grand colonial buildings. Then it’s on to see the exterior of the Notre Dame Cathedral, a Romanesque landmark built in the 1800s, the grand Saigon Central Post Office and the Reunification Palace. The focus later in the day is Cholon, Vietnam’s largest Chinatown. Wander along Tran Hung Dao Street and through the clothing market, Soai Kinh Lam, and n to Cha Tam Chuch and Thien Hau Pagoda, the heart of Chinese culture in the city. The last stop of the day is the Ben Thanh Market, a city icon and a great place to bargain for textiles, jewellery and speciality dishes.

Mekong Delta Discovery

Travel south from Ho Chi Minh City, the gateway to the Mekong Delta. Known as the "rice bowl" of Vietnam, the Delta is the most fertile region in the country and the main producer of rice and tropical fruits. Board your boat to begin your discovery of the mighty Mekong River as well as its narrow canals, gaining a real insight into the lives of the local people. Late afternoon you'll return to Ho Chi Minh City.

Ba Na Hills and Golden Bridge

You won't want to miss out on this unique entertainment complex in the mountains. Get picked up and taken to Suoi Mo station where you will catch a ride in a cable car. Once you reach the top, there’s an array of activities for you to pick from. Stroll through the cobbled paths of the French-style village and make your way to one of Vietnam's modern iconic landmarks, the Golden Bridge. After taking your Instagram-worthy pictures of the giant hands seemingly holding up the walkway, you can take a wander through the beautiful gardens. The fantasy park awaits if you’re seeking more thrilling activities. As the largest indoor amusement park in Vietnam, this is perfect place for children (and adults that are still kids at heart). Vietnamese Pottery Making Class in Hanoi

Located on the banks of the Red River, just outside Hanoi, the ancient Bat Trang Ceramic Village is a must-see for history enthusiasts and those interested in local crafts. Dating back seven centuries, this traditional trades village is also home to some of the best craftsmen in the country, making it the perfect place to learn the art of pottery and create a memorable souvenir. Step inside one of the hundreds of private workshops that line the narrow streets in the village and immerse yourself in the daily life of a local. Hanoi's Highlights in a Day

This is a fantastic introduction to Vietnam’s capital, packing many of Hanoi’s sights into a day. You’ll begin in the city’s Ho Chi Minh Quarter, the site of the mausoleum of the former revolutionary statesman. Other attractions in this corner of central Hanoi include the Presidential Palace, the lotus blossom influenced One Pillar Pagoda and the Temple of Literature. The tour then proceeds to the most well-known neighbourhood: the Old Quarter. With the guide, you’ll wander through the wonderfully busy streets that are lined with a jumble of French colonial buildings. Stop for a traditional egg coffee at the well-thought-of Café Giang, before ending the day at a visit to the Water Puppet Theatre to learn about an entertainment form that’s over 1000 years old.

Good to know The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is closed every afternoon and on Mondays and Fridays so a stop to take a picture will be included in the tour on these occasions. The mausoleum is also closed 15 June to the 15 August for the annual renovation.

Hanoi Street Art & Old Quarter Tour

A great way to get to know what life in a city is – or was – like is through street art. On this half day tour of Hanoi’s glorious Old Quarter there’s a focus on murals and mosaics, starting at the famous Phung Hung Street. A handful of local and South Korean artists have created beautiful depictions of urban memories in each of railway arches. The next stop is the Hanoi Ceramic Mosaic Mural, a 4-mile-long artwork that was produced in 2021 to celebrate 1000 year since the foundation of Hanoi. The intricate mosaics portray various aspects of Vietnamese history, culture and tradition. The tour will end with a visit to Café Giang for an egg coffee, a Hanoi delicacy.

Hanoi Old Quarter Cyclo Tour

Spend a few hours being whisked through the streets of Hanoi’s beautiful Old Quarter on a cyclo. The first port of call is Ngoc Son temple, the most visited temple in the city which is located on an island in the middle of Hoan Kiem Lake. To reach the island, a tiny land of legends, you’ll cross the pretty, scarlet hued Huc Bridge. Then head to Hanoi’s beautiful Opera House before weaving your way through the historic streets of the Old Quarter.

Cruise & Cycle Through Tam Coc

Set off southwards out of Hanoi and head to the Ninh Binh province, a wonderous world of riverside rice fields punctuated with limestone casts that’s known as Halong Bay on land. You’ll board a small boat and be transported slowly along the Ngo Dong River to the Tam Coc cave system. After entering one of the caves in your rowboat, you can enjoy the unhurried trip back to the pier and take in life on the riverside. It’ll then be time for a delicious local lunch and a 3-mile bike ride to Hung Mua, another of the three Tam Coc caves. You’ll then ascend nearly 500 steps to the top of Hang Mua Peak for some unforgettable view across the surrounding landscapes.

After meeting up with the chef at Lanterns Restaurant, you’ll hop on a cyclo - a typical three-wheeled bicycle taxi - for a fascinating trip to a local produce market. Here you’ll get a colourful lesson in the ingredients that are key to the country’s culinary culture and how to choose and haggle for the best, pausing for a refreshing sugar-cane juice along the way. On returning to the restaurant, you’ll be taken through the necessary steps to create a three-course meal, starting with fresh spring rolls, perhaps, followed by lemongrass chicken or fish cooked in a clay pot depending on what’s on the menu that day. Vietnam is a multi-religion state with Buddhism as the leading religion.

Where is Vietnam? Vietnam is furthest east on the Indochina Peninsula in South-East Asia, bordered by Cambodia to the south west, Laos to the north west and China to the north. It also borders Thailand across the Gulf of Thailand to the west while its east coast leads onto the South China Sea, north of Malaysia, north west of Indonesia and west of the Philippines. Vietnam’s capital, Hanoi, is up in the north while its largest city, Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), is much further down in the south.

Cities Vietnam is a long-time favourite for cultural holidays and a captivating country to explore. You can start in the north in the capital Hanoi with its mix of well-preserved temples, buzzing markets and skyscrapers before heading down south to Ho Chi Minh City, famous for its French colonial history. Visit the old imperial capital of Hué for a fascinating insight into Vietnam down the years. The city is split into north and south by the lovely Perfume River, with most of the hotels, restaurants and cafés in the south. For the perfect stopover, go east to the UNESCO World Heritage city of Hoi An; it’s an ancient riverside city interspersed with Venice-esque canals.

Vietnam beaches Vietnam has also become an increasingly popular beach destination, thanks to a top mix of family-friendly oceanfront resorts and luxurious romantic retreats. Most of the best beaches are in the southern half of the country; Danang, right in the centre, has calm waters which make it an ideal spot for kayaking. Further south you'll find Ninh Van Bay, a superb hideaway only accessible by boat, and Nha Trang – this popular beach resort has 19 offshore islands and is only a 45-minute drive from Cam Ranh. In the Phan Thiet region even further down the coast, Mui Ne was once a fishing village and is now a popular beach resort; it’s excellent for watersports including sailing and kitesurfing.

Getting around Vietnam is surprisingly big, so the quickest way to get from one major destination to another is by plane; regular flights make travelling between the north and south straightforward. Crazy city traffic can be daunting, so renting a car isn’t the norm – you’d be better off paying for a moto-taxi or a cyclo. Make sure you agree on the price beforehand, and don’t be afraid to barter. A boat trip is another great way to get around; sailing along the Perfume River in Hué to see the city’s sites, or a two-night cruise on board the luxurious Au Co ship around the beautiful limestone islands and caves in Halong Bay, are two excellent options.

Diving & snorkelling Marine life in Vietnam is not as extensive as in other South-East Asia destinations such as Thailand or Malaysia but diving and snorkelling here is still fun. Nha Trang on the central coast is home to several snorkelling sites in the South China Sea and is known as the country’s diving capital thanks to its beautiful clear waters. Here you’ll have the chance to see rare species including frogfish and cowfish. Phu Quoc is known for having Vietnam’s finest hard coral growth and you can snorkel at Turtle Island off its north-west coast.

Food & drink Vietnamese cuisine is similar to Chinese, with lots of noodles and rice, plus seafood and fish by the coast. You can instantly see the emphasis on fresh herbs and produce including basil and peppers, used extensively in hotels’ cuisine and also in street food – locals serve tempting dishes including noodle soup pho, the pork noodle dish cao lau in Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City’s bot chien – a mixture of rice flour and egg, cooked then served with papaya, shallots, green onions and pickled chilli sauce.

Shopping Vietnam has some of the most brilliantly hectic markets in South-East Asia, from silk and silver streets in Hanoi’s Old Quarter to the must-see Ben Thanh Market in Ho Chi Minh City, open since 1914. Tailor shops will make bespoke garments for you in no time. You'll find handicrafts such as bamboo items, lacquerware, ceramics, silk and jewellery. Antiques are available but can be difficult to take back to the UK due to problems at customs. Be sure to haggle with locals for the best prices, except in state-run stores where prices are fixed.

Vaccinations

Confirm primary courses and boosters are up to date as recommended for life in Britain - including for example, seasonal flu vaccine and COVID-19 (if eligible), MMR , vaccines required for occupational risk of exposure, lifestyle risks and underlying medical conditions.
Courses or boosters usually advised: Diphtheria; Tetanus.
Other vaccines to consider: Hepatitis A; Hepatitis B; Rabies; Typhoid.
Selectively advised vaccines - only for those individuals at highest risk: Japanese Encephalitis.

Notes on the diseases mentioned above

Diphtheria : spread person to person through respiratory droplets. Risk is higher if mixing with locals in poor, overcrowded living conditions.

Risk is higher if travelling to countries where there hepatitis A is circulating in the local population, or to areas where personal hygiene and sanitation is poor.

Risk is higher for those visiting more frequently, staying longer, visiting friends and relatives, children through bites, cuts and scratches and those who may require medical treatment during travel.

Japanese Encephalitis : spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. This mosquito breeds in rice paddies and mainly bites between dusk and dawn. Risk is highest for long stay travellers to rural areas, particularly if unable to avoid mosquito bites.
Tetanus : spread through contamination of cuts, burns and wounds with tetanus spores. Spores are found in soil worldwide. A total of 5 doses of tetanus vaccine are recommended for life in the UK. Boosters are usually recommended in a country or situation where the correct treatment of an injury may not be readily available.
Typhoid : spread mainly through consumption of contaminated food and drink. Risk is higher where access to adequate sanitation and safe water is limited.

Malaria is a serious and sometimes fatal disease transmitted by mosquitoes.You cannot be vaccinated against malaria.

Malaria precautions

Malaria risk is low throughout the year in Kon Tum, Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Dak Nong, Binh Phuoc and western parts of Phu Yen, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan and north west Lai Chau. In these areas, malaria tablets are not recommended, however, they may be considered for certain travellers who may be at higher risk (see below under Low risk areas with additional advice)
Low to no risk in other areas including Ho Chi Min City and Hanoi, the Red River and Mekong deltas, Phu Quoc Island and coastal plains.
Malaria precautions are essential. Avoid mosquito bites by covering up with clothing such as long sleeves and long trousers especially after sunset, using insect repellents on exposed skin and, when necessary, sleeping under a mosquito net.
Check with your doctor or nurse if antimalarial tablets may be required.

Low risk with additional advice: antimalarial tablets are not usually advised, however, they can be considered for certain travellers who may be at higher risk e.g. longer stay in rural areas, visiting friends or relatives, those with medical conditions, immunosuppression or those without a spleen. Atovaquone/proguanil OR doxycycline OR mefloquine is advised for those at risk.
Low to no risk: antimalarial tablets are not usually advised.
If you have been travelling in a malarious area and develop a fever seek medical attention promptly. Remember malaria can develop even up to one year after exposure.
If travelling to an area remote from medical facilities, carrying standby emergency treatment for malaria may be considered.

Other Health Risks

Altitude and travel, dengue fever, zika virus infection.

This country has been categorised as having a risk of Zika (ZIKV) virus transmission.

ZIKV is mainly spread through mosquito bites. The mosquito responsible most commonly bites during daylight hours and is common in towns and cities.

The illness is usually mild but infection during pregnancy may lead to babies being born with birth defects. There is no vaccine currently available against ZIKV.

Advice for All Travellers

You should practice strict mosquito bite avoidance at all times. Do not travel without adequate travel insurance . Seek pre-travel health advice from a travel health professional 6 to 8 weeks in advance of travel.

Additional recommendations for pregnant travellers or those planning pregnancy

If you are planning pregnancy in the very near future you should consider whether you should avoid travel to this country.

contact your GP, obstetrician or midwife for further advice, even if you have not been unwell or had any symptoms of ZIKV infection
use barrier methods of contraception during and after travel and for the duration of your pregnancy, even in you have not been unwell or had any symptoms of ZIKV infection
If you develop symptoms of ZIKV infection, it is recommended that you avoid becoming pregnant for a further 2 months following your recovery
2 months afterwards if you are female
3 months afterwards if you are male or if both partners travelled

These measures reduce the chance of sexual transmission of ZIKV and/or the risk of ZIKV infection in pregnancy.

Depending on where you come from, the weather in Vietnam might be hotter and more humid than what you are used to. Please consider your suitability to the season you wish to travel in. Check out intrepidtravel.com/vietnam/weather-in-vietnam for more info.
There are some long travel days by both private and public transport (up to 10 hours on the road), including the days that you cross from Vietnam to Cambodia and Cambodia to Thailand. Your leader and local guides will assist with the border crossings, but plenty of patience is advised.
Some travellers enjoy Siem Reap so much that they decide they want to stay there longer, rather than continuing with the group to Bangkok. You are welcome to sign off the trip to enjoy more of Cambodia, however we aren’t able to reimburse any unused services or provide alternate onward travel arrangements.
At times your accommodation may not have continuous hot water. Most travellers don’t find this a problem however, and are often keen to cool down from the heat with a refreshing cold shower.

Travel by private minibus to World Heritage-listed Ha Long Bay, which is dotted with sandy coves, grottoes and 1600 limestone islands formed over millennia by wind and water erosion. Board a private boat and cruise the bay, exploring Surprise Cave and perhaps even enjoying a swim from Ti Top Island Beach during the warmer months. Access to Surprise Cave is via staircases. Once inside the cave the pathways are a little uneven and slippery. To end the day, spend an evening aboard the boat beneath the night sky. Your wooden junk-style boat has twin-share cabins with air-conditioning and private facilities. There's also a dining room and bar to enjoy lunch, dinner and breakfast.

Kayaking and swimming is restricted to designated zones within the bay.

There are restrictions on the number of boats that are permitted to stay in the bay overnight, sometimes resulting in a shortage. Meet the team behind this important cause and learn how to transform rubbish into a useful and reusable bag. After your visit, return by bus to Hanoi. Arrive late this afternoon and enjoy free time until tonight’s train voyage. Be sure to grab a bowl of pho while you’re in town and slurp down this local specialty made from broth, noodles and meat. Shared day use hotel rooms are arranged in Hanoi if you would like to freshen up before the overnight train (one room for every six group members).

Sleeper trains typically have four or six berth compartments with bench seats that convert into sleeping bunks. A sheet, pillow and blanket are provided, although some travellers prefer to bring their own sleeping sheet. Depending on the configuration of the group, you may need to share with people of different genders or passengers who aren’t part of the group. Your leader will coordinate this and give further information about the train.

Arrive in Hue this morning and transfer to the hotel. Once the imperial capital of Vietnam, Hue holds the treasures of the country’s royal past. Enjoy free time in the morning to rest or explore. If you choose the latter (and who can blame you) the bustling Dong Ba Market is a great place to sample some of the specialties that once graced the Nguyen emperors' tables like banh khoai (royal rice cake). Reunite with the group to visit the war-damaged ruins of the Imperial Citadel, a sprawling city-within-a-city which contains the remains of temples, state houses and the emperor’s palace.

See Hue like a local – from the back of a motorbike! Straddle the saddle and whiz around town with a local guide, taking in historic and contemporary sights along the way. Stop at Thanh Toan to see the 18th-century covered bridge and villagers shopping at their local market. Visit the 17th-century active Buddhist monastery of Thien Mu Pagoda and see the car that belonged to Thich Quang Duc, the monk who self-immolated in 1963 in protest against the treatment of Buddhists by the South Vietnamese regime. For lunch, savour a vegetarian feast in a nunnery. Finish at the lakeside royal tomb of Emperor Tu Duc before heading back to town.

This morning travel by bus through coastal rice paddies and the spectacular Hai Van Pass. After a photo stop on the way, arrive into Hoi An. Recently declared a World Heritage site, Hoi An was a major international trading port during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Today, parts of the beautifully-preserved town retain the feel of centuries past. It's also a shopping mecca, famous for its plethora of tailors. When you arrive, your leader will take you on a sightseeing walk through the Old Town to visit a handful of the city's major attractions. You’ll also be given a sightseeing pass so you can further explore select attractions at your leisure.

Today is a free day to explore Hoi An. Maybe browse the cobbled streets and art galleries or hire a bike and cycle through rice paddies out to Cua Dai Beach. Maybe browse for paintings, ceramics and colourful cloth lanterns in the town’s markets and preserved Chinese shophouses. If you’re craving a new look, you could pay a visit to one of the hundreds of tailors and get something special made. Hoi An is also known for its delicious regional food, so be sure to enjoy a meal at a riverside restaurant or perhaps partake in a cooking class.

Today take a short, early morning flight to Ho Chi Minh City. Formerly known as Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City has a fascinating history and is arguably Vietnam’s capital of commerce and culture. Enjoy a free day in Ho Chi Minh to get out and discover the city at your own pace. Alternatively, why not get an up close and personal history lesson on guerrilla warfare during an Urban Adventures tour to the Cu Chi tunnels. This underground network in the middle of the jungle was used by the Viet Cong during the war. Take the chance to climb into the tunnels and imagine what it would’ve been like to eat, sleep, work and cook – even go to school underground as conflict raged above. Return to Ho Chi Minh where there will be a meeting at 6 pm to welcome any new travellers joining you on the next stage of your adventure. Afterwards, perhaps get to know your new travel buddies over an optional group dinner.

Travel by public bus across the border, through rural Vietnam and Cambodia and onto Phnom Penh. Cambodia's capital city is set on a major junction of the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers and boasts some fine examples of French-inspired architecture. If you're looking for a tasty beverage when you arrive, head for a mojito on the rooftop or if you're in the mood for shopping, stop in at the art-deco Psar Thmei (Central Market) or travel out to Psar Tuol Tom Pong (the Russian Market) for the best range of local souvenirs.

On the bus journey across the border, you will exit Vietnam at Moc Bai and enter Cambodia at Ba Vet. Your leader will assist you with border crossing procedures. You will also have the comfort of being on the same bus throughout the journey with less hassle at the border crossing by changing vehicles. If you’d prefer not to travel by bus today, you are welcome to book a flight instead (at your own expense).

Today, confront Cambodia's tragic past on a guided tour of the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S21), a former school which served as a Khmer Rouge torture centre. It's estimated that more than 20,000 people were held and tortured here. You’ll also head out to the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek, where a stupa made up of some 8000 human skulls marks the execution ground for the torture victims of Tuol Sleng. Afterwards, you may wish to learn about a brighter period in Cambodian history from an optional visit to the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda. Wat Phnom, shrouded in myth, is equally worth a visit, as is the National Museum with its excellent Khmer collection. Cyclo tours around the city are a great alternative to walking and generally include the Central Market, US Embassy, Wat Phnom, Mekong riverfront, the Independence Monument and Royal Palace.

Travel by private minibus to Battambang today. Break up an otherwise long trip with a visit to the pottery visit in Kampong Chhnang,and learn about the craft of pottery making at local workshops. Then continue to Cambodia's second-largest city. A pretty riverside town of French elegance, friendly Khmer people and beautifully preserved colonial architecture, this is a great place to explore on your own. Why not take part in an optional cooking class to learn the secrets of local dishes such as amok, Khmer curry and fried spicy chicken.

Spend a bit of time riding around the countryside by bike, travelling out to the rural villages around Battambang. This is a great opportunity to get a closer look at what rural life means in Cambodia. Visit local families who have been producing agricultural products the traditional way passed down through generations, like rice paper, dried bananas, and bamboo sticky rice and stop by a Khmer house and relax and enjoy some coconut water while chatting about their life. In the afternoon continue by private minibus to Siem Reap, arriving in the evening, and relax as you prepare for your much-anticipated visit to Angkor tomorrow. A very rewarding morning to get to Angkor Wat in the early hours to watch the sun rising over it as it did in the ancient times (weather permitting). Then Temple-hop with your local guide and make the most of your visit to the world-famous Angkor complex. The temples, dating back as far as the ninth century, were believed to represent the cosmic world and were set in perfect balance, symmetry and composition. The intricately carved bas-reliefs and architectural designs are mind-blowing and there are spectacular photo opportunities at any time of day. Watching a sunrise or sunset is a must. The ruins are scattered over an area of some 160 square km, but the main cluster of temples is close to Siem Reap, so there will be plenty of time to fully appreciate the great archaeological sites of Angkor Wat, Bayon and the jungle-covered Ta Prohm.

Temperatures and humidity can be high in Cambodia, especially walking around sights like the Angkor complex where there may be little shade. Be prepared by taking plenty of drink breaks and wearing appropriate skin protection. Some travellers find an umbrella handy to keep the sun off.

Continue your explorations of the Angkor complex this morning. In the afternoon, embark on a private local boat discover the floating villages and local daily lives at Chhong Kneas, a trading port of agricultural products on the edge of Tonle Sap Lake, also known as the Great Lake of Cambodia.

Foreign Office warns UK tourists after they have 'exit ban' slapped on them

A Foreign Office warning has been issued over a simple rule which could see your passport taken off you. UK tourists in Vietnam have been alerted that they cannot leave the Southeast Asian hotspot without a valid visa.

Travellers must also enter and exit the country using the same passport and the latest advice comes after tourists could not exit the country after having their travel documents removed. These exit bans have prompted authorities to issue fresh reminders of Vietnam's entry requirements.

Vietnamese authorities may place an exit ban on certain individuals to prevent them from leaving the country. An exit ban can relate to investigations into an individual, their family or an employer, criminal and civil matters, such as business disputes or motor vehicle accidents, employment without a valid work permit and unpaid financial debts.

It is difficult to obtain information on bans from Vietnamese authorities. An exit ban can be requested by people involved in any of these circumstances. You may not be aware that authorities have placed an exit ban on you until you try to leave the country. Your passport may be seized until the case is fully investigated and settled.

The Foreign Office added: "There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Vietnam. You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty. If you’re taking prescription medication into Vietnam, carry it in your hand luggage with a copy of the prescription.

"If it has a total import value greater than 100 US dollars, you must declare it at customs. For information about restrictions on medication, see Health." In 2019, Vietnam received 18 million international arrivals, up from 2.1 million in the year 2000. The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism is following a long-term plan to diversify the tourism industry, which brings foreign exchange into the country.

I used ChatGPT Advanced Voice to time travel — and I'm still shocked at how good it is

It speaks Latin

OpenAI’s GPT-4o Advanced Voice is one of the most powerful and potentially important artificial intelligence tools of the year. It lets you have a human-like natural conversation with an AI voice and even interrupt it when it's speaking too much.

Currently only available to a small number of ChatGPT Plus subscribers, this new method of interacting with technology is expected to be widely available this fall. The company also plans to launch a vision mode that allows you to see the world through your camera next year.

What makes Advanced Voice different from the current ChatGPT Voice or even the newly launched Gemini Live is the fact it is speech-to-speech. This means it can natively understand what you say, how you say it and the emotional intonations behind your words.

It can also do accents and tell a great story, so I asked Advanced Voice to take me on a time travel adventure. It started with a trip to Ancient Egypt and spoke in the voice of a trader. Not only did it do a great job of the voices, but it is a fun storyteller.

Prompting the adventure with Advanced Voice

Using advanced voice isn't that different to any other artificial intelligence technology in that it starts with a prompt. Unlike talking to ChatGPT with text or generating an image with Midjourney, Advanced Voice is prompted by your voice.

At the most basic level, this is simply telling it what you want it to do but it can also pick up on tone changes in your voice so if you ask it to explain the meaning of life but do so sounding slightly teary or upset it will respond in a way that reflects how are you sounded.

I even had Advanced Voice use a Yoda voice for a small portion of the adventure and it gave it a good try.

For this adventure I played it straight, simply starting by asking Advanced Voice: “Now, we're going to go through a story. Imagine you're a time traveler. When in history would you go?”

It suggested the World's Fair in Chicago in the 19th century. I asked it to take on the role of a time traveler but also to talk as people at the fair. After a brief sojourn to Chicago, I asked "Let's go somewhere else. Push the button and take me to a new location." We went to ancient Egypt.

Advanced Voice said: “Picture this: the grand pyramids are being built, and the Nile flows as the lifeblood of a thriving civilization. What are you most curious about in this time and place?”

This is where I asked it about the language, including speaking the words as accurately as possible based on what we know.

We then went to a market and finally on to Rome and a conversation between our Egyptian trader and a Roman citizen, one speaking Egyptian, the other Latin. I even had Advanced Voice use a Yoda voice for a small portion of the adventure and it gave it a good try.

Final thoughts

Advanced Voice is a brilliant storyteller, able to change emotion levels, reflect the intensity of different scenarios and even take on different accents and voices.

The problem I have with it is the limitations imposed by OpenAI . It 'could' generate sound effects to enhance a scene but its been stopped from doing so. In theory it could even adapt its voice even more than it does, but again it has been stopped.

The issue is an understandable one: safety. Asking the model to perform those more unpredictable tasks could lead to output that breaks OpenAI's safety guidelines and potentially push Advanced Voice into the realm of unsafe to release. It's just frustrating knowing those capabilities are slightly beyond reach.

Even without them though Advanced Voice is still the best interaction I've had with AI, allowing for real-time conversation, a natural flow where I can interrupt on a whim and someone to talk to that responds as a human might to my tone and speed.

MUST READ: Waited too long before contacting your insurer or making a claim?

Most insurers will require you to notify them of any event leading to a claim within a certain time period, some even as quickly as 24 hours after the event. Find out what this period is and the maximum period of time following your journey that you can lodge a claim.

When comparing different travel insurance quotes its important to consider the following points to make sure you’re receiving the right cover for your trip.

Where are you travelling? Are there risks specific to that country you should be aware of and is it covered by your insurer? If there has been a travel warning issued against travelling to the country, you may not be able to apply for cover. It is also important to ensure that you are covered for each country you are travelling to, consider worldwide cover if you’re travelling far and wide.
Discounts. If you’re travelling as a family or a group then you might be able to receive a slight discount on your policy.
How long are you travelling for? Are you a frequent traveller? If you travel often, or you’re planning on taking a gap year, then an annual policy might be more affordable and convenient. Just be aware of the maximum period of travel permitted for individual trips.
Do you need extra cover for your trip? If you’re off skiing or your trip involves adventurous activities you’re going to need extra cover. You could also need extra cover if you have pre-existing medical conditions, you’re above a certain age, you’re taking valuables that you want to protect.
Maximum cover available. Make sure you check out the range of benefits and the maximum payment you will receive for each claim, for example, how much will you be able to claim if you suffer a medical emergency, if your flight is delayed or if your luggage or valuables are lost, stolen or damaged
Tell the truth. It’s really not worth leaving out details of an old medical condition or anything that you think might be able to save you a few extra pounds. Insurance companies will take the time to ensure that your claim is genuine and that you were truthful at the time of application, so it’s important to be upfront from the start to ensure you are covered appropriately.
Read the important stuff. You might not read 10 different product disclosure statements cover to cover, but at the very least read through the exclusions and cover benefits section so you know when you will and won’t be covered. It’s also worth checking out the claims section so you know exactly what you will need to provide and who to contact in the event of a claim.
Know the excess you will be charged. Excess charges can vary greatly between insurers. You will be charged an excess for each individual claim you make under the policy, so it is important to know how much you’ll need to fork out in the event of a claim.
Want to avoid the excess altogether? Some insurers offer policies with no excess. However, this does mean that you’ll be required to pay a higher premium when you purchase the policy so that you no longer have to pay an excess.
Know what you will be paid for the loss of valuable items. Most policies will have a sub-limit for individual items. If you are taking out additional cover for expensive items, make sure you know the maximum amount your insurer will pay for multiple items in the event of a claim.
Keep an eye out for discounts. Competition between insurers for your business means there are some great chances to lock down great savings and bonus gifts.

Purchasing your policy

Do i really need travel insurance.

Many people feel that taking out travel insurance is an unnecessary expense, but it can end up saving you thousands of pounds. We all like to believe that holidays and trips abroad are plain sailing and stress free. Unfortunately though flights get delayed, luggage gets lost, people get ill and hotels get overbooked.

While no one wants to think about things going wrong, when weighing up whether or not you need travel insurance, you might want to consider these factors:

You’re not covered by the NHS when you’re overseas. There is no NHS in Ibiza. If you end up needing medical care, you’ll have to somehow fork out the cash to pay the medical bills and medical bills abroad can be exorbitantly expensive.
Your flight has just been cancelled. Cancelled flights as well as lost, damaged or stolen luggage and valuables are frustrating and costly. Why risk losing thousands when you can get peace of mind for as little as the cost of a few drinks?
You could end up in serious debt. Hefty hospital bills and repatriation home could leave you and your family hundreds of thousands of pounds in debt.
Travel insurance is compulsory for some countries. You’re required to have travel insurance in order to gain entry into some countries, including Cuba, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Ukraine, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.
You could be liable for injuring someone else. It is easy to accidentally cause injury to someone on the ski slopes, especially if you’re not that experienced, but travel insurance can cover you for personal liability claims.

When is the best time to purchase travel insurance?

It’s time to think about purchasing your travel insurance as soon as you have booked any part of your trip, so that your prepaid costs and deposits are covered in the event of cancellations or if your travel company or airline goes bust. You will still only pay for the period of travel you have taken out cover for.

Can I take out travel insurance if I'm already overseas?

Yes, but not many providers offer this. It is best to buy your travel insurance before you leave the UK.

Can I purchase cover for my child who is travelling alone?

Yes. There are some policies that will provide cover for unaccompanied children under 18.

Can I buy cover for one-way trips?

Yes. There are some insurers that offer cover for one-way trips. The journey will usually have to start in the UK and restrictions may apply.

When do I add additional cover?

You can add additional cover such as cover for specific sports or high-value items on the insurer’s website before entering your trip details.

Do I need to take my travel insurance policy with me?

Yes. You should take your policy with you as it provides you with information and emergency telephone numbers that you may need in the event of an emergency that may require you to make a claim. Your travel insurance document can provide the following details:

What evidence you will require for your claim to be approved.
Your policy number.
What you are actually covered for.
Your insurers emergency contact details.

Choosing the right option

What countries or regions do i choose when getting a quote.

When entering your trip details, you can either enter the countries or cities you are visiting or choose the region you are travelling to. Most insurers offer policies by region, not by specific countries, although there are exceptions to this, in which case you would choose specific countries.

Am I covered for all countries in that region?

Yes. For example, if you choose “Europe” as the region you’re travelling to, you will be covered for all European countries, although you may not be covered for countries that are not considered to be within Europe. If travelling in multiple regions, you may want to choose a Worldwide policy.

What policy should I get if we're travelling as a pair?

Some brands offer couple policies, which can be much more affordable and convenient than taking out two separate policies. A duo policy will cover both you and your travelling partner under a single policy. There is usually a reduced amount of cover provided for each cover feature for each traveller.

What policy should I get if I'm taking a cruise to different countries?

You will need to ensure that your policy provides cover for every destination that you will be visiting as part of your trip. Not all insurers will cover cruises, so do your research and find out which insurers offer cruise travel insurance. You may need to select the Worldwide region.

Do I still need travel insurance with an EHIC card?

The EHIC card allows UK citizens to gain access to state healthcare when temporarily staying in another European Economic Area (EEA). Meaning that you will be provided treatment as if you were a citizen of that country, either at a reduced cost or for free.

Whilst the EHIC card offers great benefits, it is important to bear in mind the restrictions placed on your cover with just an EHIC card compared to a travel insurance policy. For example, an EHIC card would not cover you for repatriation if you had a skiing accident and needed to be flown straight back to the UK. It also only offers medical assistance. It does not cover you for delays, loss of baggage or trip cancellation, whereas a travel insurance policy would.

Adjusting your policy

Can i cancel my policy after i've purchased it.

Most plans will come with a cooling-off period. If you cancel your policy during this time, the premium will be refunded.

Can I extend my policy if I need to?

Yes, but you usually need to apply for an extension a week before your cover ends.

Can I change to a different policy?

Yes, provided you cancel your existing cover within the cooling-off period (usually 14 days). You will receive a full refund and be able to take out a different policy.

When you will and won’t be covered

What happens if my travel operator or airline company goes bankrupt.

Most insurers exclude cover for this but you may be able to claim compensation from the airline itself, especially if they are ATOL protected.

Does travel insurance cover car hire?

Travel insurance can cover car hire but it does not cover costs associated with you being involved in a car accident or if the vehicle is stolen. This is a separate policy that you take out with the car hire company.

Am I covered for working overseas?

Conditions around travel insurance for working overseas vary between insurers. Generally, you will not be covered for injuries sustained if the work is labour-intensive or high-risk. It’s crucial to know exactly how you will be covered if you’re looking to work overseas.

Will an annual family policy provide cover if I'm travelling alone?

Yes, all family members listed on the policy will be covered for travel on separate trips by themselves (except if they are dependent children travelling alone).

Does my insurer cover follow-up treatment after I return home?

No. Your insurer won’t cover follow-up treatment for injuries or illnesses sustained overseas after you return home to the UK.

Will I be covered if I develop a medical condition after I purchase cover but before I leave for my trip?

Yes, provided you were not aware of the condition and not seeking treatment related to the condition prior to taking out cover. You will be covered for trip cancellation as a result of the condition.

Does travel insurance cover theft?

Travel insurance does cover theft, but there are conditions for when a claim will be paid. You must not have left the items unattended, and you must obtain an official police statement within 24 hours of the theft taking place.

Does travel insurance cover terrorism?

Some policies will provide cover for hijackings, but most policies exclude claims related to terrorism.

Making a claim

What should i do if i have a medical emergency overseas.

You should contact your insurer’s emergency medical assistance service as soon as possible. This service should be available 24 hours a day. The insurer will work with local medical providers and services to ensure you receive the attention required.

When must I lodge my claim?

Generally, you should make a claim within 30 days of returning home.

Do I have to pay for my medical bill upfront?

It will depend on the nature of the condition. For major procedures where the bill is significant, you should be able to contact your insurer to authorise payment. Where the condition is not as serious, treatment should be paid and receipted. In any case, you must obtain a medical certificate showing the nature of the condition or illness.

What will happen if I am injured overseas and evacuated?

If deemed necessary, your insurer will cover the costs to bring you home to the UK to receive medical treatment, then the NHS will be able to treat you.

Can I make a claim for expensive items if I don't have a receipt?

Generally, the insurer will require you to have some kind of proof of purchase in order to make a claim for expensive items. Such proof may include receipts or valuation certificates. It’s worth checking the conditions around what will be required prior to making a claim.
