Cardinals as 'messengers from heaven': What does it mean when you see this beautiful red bird?

Red-hued bird given name 'cardinal' after color and crest reminded early settlers of faith leaders.

English man trains birds to fly to him, eat off his hand

A man from Foolow, England, has spent time in his backyard over the last three years getting various birds to warm up to him. Now, they fly to his hand while he hand feeds them. See the incredible moment!

Have you ever seen a cardinal at a time when you most needed comfort?

Cardinals have always had a deep spiritual meaning, tracing all the way back to when they were first named.

"When European settlers arrived in North America, they noticed these birds’ bright red hue and how closely it resembled the red vestments of Roman Catholic leading bishops," the Farmer's Almanac reported.

WHAT ARE 'ANGEL NUMBERS' AND WHY DO PEOPLE KEEP SEEING THEM?

"And the bird’s jaunty crest is similar in shape to the church officials’ headgear, especially the tall, pointed mitre."

The bright hue goes beyond the pointed adornments of the Catholic Church. "The red color of the cardinal is seen as a symbol of the blood of Jesus Christ," Fr. Jeffrey Kirby, pastor of our Lady of Grace in Indian Land, South Carolina, told Fox News Digital.

Cardinals were given their name back when the early settlers compared the red hue and high crest of the bird to the red vestments and hats worn by cardinals of the Catholic Church. Shown here: a male cardinal.  (iStock)

"In Christian belief, it is the blood of the Lord Jesus that has opened the gates of paradise to humanity."

It is because of this religious correlation that many believe a visit from a cardinal serves as a sign or heavenly message from a departed loved one.

GOOD LUCK OMENS! WHY THE PRAYING MANTIS, BUTTERFLY AND LADYBUG ARE THOUGHT TO BRING GOOD THINGS

The festive color of the cardinal — the males are bright red, while the females are usually a pale brown, with warm reddish tinges on their wings, tail and crest — brings a great sense of joy to many when they see the bird.

Many people have noted the presence of a cardinal during a time of great sorrow or when they needed encouragement or uplift. (iStock)

"Such an encouraging presence of cardinals in sorrowful moments has developed into a cultural association of the birds with hope and the presence of our loved ones who have died," Fr. Kirby continued.

Many people have noticed the presence of a cardinal when they bury a loved one or in times of great sorrow connected to a departed family member.

This common occurrence can mean a loved one is close by — and that you will always be loved by that person.

"People have often reported that after the death of their loved ones, they begin to see cardinals frequently," according to CaringCardinals.com.

"Seeing a cardinal for the first time or more frequently than usual can be an indication from your loved ones that they will always feel your love and will be near you."

Fr. Kirby again pointed to the religious significance of the cardinal, or birds in general, by looking at Matthew 10:29-31.

COINS LEFT ON GRAVESTONES: WHAT DOES IT MEAN AND WHY DO PEOPLE DO IT?

"Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. And even the hairs of your head are all counted. So do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows," the passage from Scripture reads.

Scripture uses birds as a means of understanding God's providence and continuous care in our lives.  (iStock)

The text uses birds to share a lesson that points toward God's presence in our lives.

"If God could use a sparrow, he could certainly use a cardinal. It is very possible that God would send a cardinal to someone who is grieving and in desolation," Fr. Kirby continued.

"The spirit of the bird would certainly complement such a special mission."

While the cardinal may not be your loved one incarnate — it may be a physical manifestation of the Lord's providence that you can see.

The Lord may send a cardinal at a time when you need encouragement or a reminder of His presence in your life, many people believe. (iStock)

The next time you see a cardinal, it may be the Lord sending you a message from a dearly departed loved one, suggested the priest.

"God’s providence could allow a bird to serve as a sign and a reminder to us of the presence of our loved ones and their kindness and care for us," said Fr. Kirby.

When God Sends A Cardinal: Red Cardinal Spiritual Meaning

Photo of author

There is an old folklore saying that, “When God sends a cardinal, it’s a visitor from heaven.” Because of this saying, some wonder if the appearance of a Red Cardinal in their yard could really mean something special.

Depending on people’s different cultures, backgrounds, or beliefs, they attribute different meanings to the appearance of these lovely birds.

Some consider the red cardinal meaning that their loved one is near in spirit, like a spiritual messenger of sorts. Others see cardinals as symbols of hope in tough times. There is even a common belief that they bring good fortune.

While there are many different interpretations of what their presence may mean, the fact that cardinals carry significant symbolic value is certain.

Let’s take a look at the legacy of this quote and the memorial tributes it has inspired.

Red Cardinal Meaning

What do cardinals represent? Cardinals are beautiful birds that represent devotion, monogamy, and loving relationships.

In connection with departed loved ones, the presence of a cardinal signifies beauty in the midst of darkness, hope in the midst of sorrow, and renewal in the midst of winter.

Whether cardinal symbolism came from the folk proverb, or the proverb came from the traditional symbolism, many people are reminded of the presence of a departed loved one or family member when a Red Cardinal visits their yard.

This may also be the reason why the lovely  Cardinal Cremation Urn with Wood Inlay Art  has been one of our most popular memorial urns for years.

When God Sends a Cardinal Quotes

Here’s a pithy, poetic version of this traditional quote:

“Cardinals appear when angels are near.”

The quote below appears to have come from a poem and blog post by Victoria McGovern. Here’s the context of the fuller version:

May you come to find comfort in and remember: Cardinals appear when angels are near. So go now, sit outside and drink your tea. Keep a look out for the little red bird — It is there, your loved one will be.

I’ve also seen the quote phrased in other ways:

  • When God sends a cardinal, it’s a visitor from heaven.
  • Cardinals appear when loved ones are near.
  • When you keep seeing a certain type of bird, it is usually a heaven-sent messenger of love for you.
  • When a cardinal appears in your yard, it’s a visitor from heaven.

Christians & Cardinals

As a Christian, I have to be wary of trying to divine too much meaning from circumstances. God’s Word is clearly revealed to us in the Scriptures, and the Bible is sufficient for all we need.

For example, why should we have to wonder about the meaning of beautiful red birds flitting by our windows when we have this great comfort directly from Jesus himself: “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

Still, God’s glory and care is shown to us through the beauty of nature. God is in charge of every sparrow and every hair on our heads, so He certainly can ordain the movements of a cardinal.

So if the appearance of a cardinal in your yard reminds you of the gift God gave you, allowing you to recall the time you had with your loved one, by all means give thanks to Him for it!

Thank you for letting me add my email. I loved the articles on the Cardinal. God bless you all this holy and beautiful season.

Thank you for the old folk saying i seen one everyday now for at lease 2wks

My daughter died last month. Everyday a redbird comes to my window and just flies in place for a few seconds looking straight at me. Then she flies away taking the same path. I love to think my baby girl comes to see me.I feel better for just a bit after the visit Thank you.

my spouse passed away April 3, 2019 . And my step daughter , February 16 , 2019.

I Seen Three Red Cardinal Today In My My Yard My Brother Die 2017 My Boyfriend Die 2016 And Husband Die 2011 It Was A Blessing To See The Red Birds

May god have a place in heaven for all of you and your departed.

My uncle who passed two years ago today was a wonderful man. I miss him so much. I was tearing up and recalled the saying about cardinals. I checked out my bird feeders. There was a beautiful male cardinal. I smiled then cried. I swear he looked me right in the eye. It was special.

My mom passed I went to her house to pray I seen one

My Mom was at a Hospice House. I had stayed the night with her and woke up to a snowy day. I looked out the window and there it was, a big male cardinal sitting at the bird feeder. He stayed for quite some time, watching me as I watched him, not a flinch as I took pictures of him. It was very peaceful, I felt it was my Dad watching out for me, comforting me during this difficult time.

My husband passed on New Years day 2020 I am very sad can’t get over it. Then my step son in-law ask me if I saw an unussual bird like a cardinal he said that our love ones who passed ressembles a bird. So from that day I always look outside the window if I will see a cardinal and much to my surprised I did see a red bird and every week I see a cardinal I always wait everyday to see the red cardinal and now I know that my husband is looking after me.

My Mom passed Nov18 2019, we were very close. I have a cardinal comes every evening to same spot for last two weeks. And other day I had my front door open a cardinal came right to glass door it hovered for a Minute and I went to door there were two cardinals sitting on porch railing.

My mom just passed away this past Monday and my Dad had passed away almost 12 years ago. The day after her passing a Red Cardinal was outside my patio doors looking in while we looked at pictures. I have always associated the Cardinal with my dad. That day it brought me such a sense of peace and confirmed all that I read today on your website. It has come by every day this week and peeks in. I know that he is telling me that all will be okay and he is just waiting for my mom to join him. I have thanked God for sending me that message.

today as of april 20 2020 a red cardinal bird flew on my porch and I look up on what it means it says an angle were near by the only person I can thank of is my dad he pass away 7 years ago December 26 2012 and it hurted me to my heart and I truly feel that he’s in a better place and he’s looking down at me seeing how much I have grown and turn my life to god.

Out of the blue I decided to cut my back yard. When I was done. A Blue Jay landed in my yard and then a Red Cardinal. What a great surprise. These two species together. Blue Bird are out in my back yard all the time. I needed this. I lost my brother in September 2020. One day I went upstairs to my mother’s room. I saw a bird there. I was frightened. I ran and never saw it again. Today we saw a male Sparrow singing his heart out on top of the McDonald’s speaker.. My other brother said he is Praising God Almighty.

I had heard that cardinals were loved ones coming to visit, but when I mentioned it to others they had never heard the saying so I started to not believe. Father has been gone for 23 years and we live in his newly constructed (at the time) house. This morning it was finally warm and the sun was out. I walked outside and a cardinal was on the tree and I watched it for a few minutes. It flew away and landed at the exact spot where we spread his ashes. That cardinal could have flown and landed anywhere in the world, but it chose the exact spot where my father’s ashes were laid.

This weekend my family and I said good-bye to our pet dog of 14 years. It has been a heart wrenching time and yesterday my sister in law asked if I wanted to come over and sit outside and chat for a bit of a distraction. As I was leaving the house I noticed a blue jay on our front deck steps but thought to myself I think it’s cardinals that are signs from heaven and I kid you not, a cardinal appeared that very moment in our front tree, flew from branch to branch for a bit and eventually flew away. It brought me comfort at my time of need for our beloved pet.

My daughter died on May 21 , 2020. I saw red cardinals in my yard. I had prayed that she would bidirectional as a cardinal she came today. I miss her soooooo much.

My beautiful doggie Romeo passed away August 16, 2019. It is now August 17, 2020. Yesterday was one year he has been gone, such a sad day for me. This morning I got out of my car, and there was a cardinal on the lawn right in front of me. I never ever saw a cardinal here before. Such a beautiful bird. I believe it was Romeo telling me he was close by and watching over me. I miss him so much, but this brought me comfort. I love you always Romeo.

Today as I was looking out of my kitchen window, 2 Cardinals flew into my view and sat in our little garden box. We always have Cardinals visit us often near our home and I know it’s my Grandmother saying hello. Well, today a pair came by about the same time my Uncle passed away. I knew it was my Grandmother bringing my Uncle to say his final goodbye.

My husband of 49 years (would be 50 this Dec 3rd) passed away just yesterday, My daughter and son came from out of town and are staying with me. I went to bed earlier than usual and they were outside the house. My daughter noticed a male cardinal sitting on a branch right next to the house on the side where our bedroom is. She thought it was a fake bird we had put there because it didn’t flinch or move away as she and her brother walked closer to it. They decided it was fake. This she asked if we had put a fake Cardinal there. I said no, why? She told me what they had seen and that there is that belief. She went outside and it was gone, so she knew it was a real bird. The this afternoon I was resting in my bedroom and she went to look and it was back in the same spot! She had me come and look and it was still there. I spoke a few words to it as if speaking to my husband and turned to leave and it fluttered away. I had not herd the story before, but it sure has me wondering now. I had ask him to give me a sign. So, May be.

My Father passed away, The following Sunday I was sitting in my car at the park taking a phone call, this little red bird landed on the sign in front of my car. He immediately got my attention! He flooded around and then flew directly over to my car windshield!! Hovering looking directly at me! Long enough that I was able to take a picture of this adorable little bird looking right at me through my car windshield! This little Redbird interacted with me for over an hour and 20 minutes, I took several videos and pics of this Special little bird coming over I am being persistent to have my attention. I was only seven days into the grieving process and this little red bird blessed me with so much peace, joy and comfort. I went back the next morning, and it was not the same time of day, I seen it the previous day. Soon as I pulled into the park parking lot.. I gazed over to a tree and immediately the little red bird reappeared!! I have no doubt this was my father coming to me to let me know that he is still here protecting me.

My Dad gained his “angel-versary” on November 16, 2019… and this little messenger of peace returned to us several times throughout 2020, specifically on Father’s Day, again on November 23 (the day we flew Dad home), and finally on Thanksgiving. If I wasn’t convinced before, I certainly am now. Happy New Year!

Good Evening, I seen a *Red Cardinal* in my back yard this afternoon tried to get a quick picture of it but it was too late….My mom passed away October 29, 2016, her birthday was January 14th she would of been 75 years old. My step dad passed away on her birthday in 2015 and their wedding anniversary was also on her birthday which would of been their 6 year wedding anniversary. After reading several articles, I’m more certain than ever that my mom came back to visit me and to let me know that everything was going to be alright and that *This Too Shall Pass* and to continue keeping my head held up and high and praying to God Almighty for guidance.

A little red bird sleep every night in a tree at the yard of my house…for almost 6 or 7 months…what does it mean?

I think it means the little bird likes the tree! Enjoy watching!

I am praying for you guys and I am so sad but happy because my 8-year-old daughter passed away and I seen the red bird and then my eight year old daughter came back my five year old son said that she was back and I was so happy

Everyday when I go outside my back door to smoke red birds appear. My mom passed May 3, 2020. I speak to her her every day. Asking for her guidance to continue in my life.

My mom passsed away on Easter Sunday 2021. We laid her to rest yesterday April 14 2021. After we left her final resting place, people came to house for a little gathering. It was a nice sunny but chilly day in New York, we were sitting outside and a cardinal just flying one tree to the other in our yard.

what if cardinals arnt national to my country lol, I have no loved ones

@jane – Sounds like it’s time to create a new tradition! What’s your favorite bird that you see regularly, but not **too* often? I’d start there.

I truly enjoyed what I read it truly did help me in many ways, Thank you.

Cardinals appear when angels are near. So go now and sit outside and drink your tea. Keep a look out for the little red bird- It is there that your loved one will be.

My mother passed away on March 6th 2021 , I was not able to be with her when she crossed over but said my goodbye’s over video with my brother and two sisters there with her. I’m the baby of my siblings and I took it especially hard on myself that I wasn’t there. Every day since she’s passed and we park our car in this specific place, my boyfriend have seen a cardinal everytime we’re there and it usually stays until we leave. He keeps telling me that it’s my mother visiting us, checking on me and whatnot and I’m not saying that I didn’t believe him but reading all the comments make me believe indefinitely. It’s comforting to know that she chooses me to visit everyday especially because she was over 1300 miles away from me when she departed. I love you momma and miss you even more. Xoxo

This morning, I was out on my front porch. I had done my Bible study and was praying, trying to seek God, and asking Him to help me weather the storms of emotion and internal healing, for the ability to be obedient and to live a life of boldness. A cardinal landed on my porch rail, cheeping loudly. He was very close to me and he kept cheeping for a few minutes. It was so weird, that I decided to Google. I guess it was God’s way of telling me to not be afraid and that He loves me.

Sorry but there is zero biblical backing to show that our loved ones come back in any form to be by us, much less that cardinals are them

Many of the people in my family have graduated to heaven. I see many Red Cardinals in my yard almost every day. They are a delight to see. They are such a vibrant red color. Seeing the Cardinals brings back memories of my family members who have passed on.

The most common interpretation of a cardinal is a message from a departed loved one. Whenever you see one, it signifies that they are visiting you. They generally appear when you need or miss them the most. They also come through moments of joy and sorrow to let you know they will always be there for you. Besides, a cardinal can convey other meanings, such as love, truthfulness, and good fortune.

The most important bluebird symbolism is linked to the color of their feathers. Blue is the color that represents peace, contentment, purity, honesty, and innocence.

My dad passed and I’ve been going home to help my mom. 2 red birds made a nest right beside my moms steps and had babies right where my mom sits. The male even sits on a wind chime my dad fixed and i had to redo. What a nice sight to see and hear my mom talk about it amen

I lost my wife on 8-30-22, I am dying inside, she was 59. Saturday afternoon 10-29-22, there was a cardinal sitting on the pool deck looking at me and chirping, I have been begging her for a sign, I visit her grave everyday and ask her for something, She delivered!!! THANK YOU HONEY!!!

My husband passed away on January 25, 2021, I keep asking him to give me a signal that he’s there with me and today I saw 2 red Cardinalds on the fence on the back yard.

I was not aware of any significance people had with cardinals but my beloved Grandpa had told me that what he remembered of his own Grandpas funeral (which they borrowed a car to attend vs. their own horse and buggy) was a cardinal on outside the window when he was 7. His Grandpa had fought in 11 Civil War battles and the war had been hard on him understandably. The day I pulled up to say my last goodbye for now to this precious man I was praying before I went inside. I sat speechless for half an hour watching the most beautiful red bird in front of me, that had likely entertained him outside his window there prior. God Himself flooded me with peace and assurance that I would see him again once he departed because he had put his trust in the RED BLOOD of Jesus that was spilled at the cross to pay for the sins of anyone who receives. 2 Peter 3:9 For it is His desire that none should perish. But that all would come to saving faith through Christ Jesus our Lord. I had NO idea God has comforted others with this throughout all of time! WHAT a personal God!!! What a tender loving Savior. And He is just waiting to save any who put their trust in HIM for salvation. So thankful for the Bible where we can know Him and His will for our lives!!! HE is everything.

I started seing cardinals in my backyard on the trees. For the first time my eyes got big I had never seen such beautiful long feathered birds. I was sitting on my bed watching through the window to my backyard and saw a white ,red, and blue one. In my mind I never heard of cardinals. Funny enough I thought of Angela I saw them around for a while and I told my boyfriend about them because I have never seen birds with long feathers these beautiful. I have lost my parents and brothers. It just dawned on me these was a sign of visitation now I get it. Waoh God’s ways are amazing. I hope to see them back again. Amen.

I have been praying and praying for a sign from God to let me know he is with me with my deadly physical diagnosis and everything will turn out OK. Then I saw a red cardinal outside my front door a couple days ago and two days ago I saw a male and two females outside my back door today ! Good news or not?

My Mom died 3/19/23. My sister’s friend sent her a hand drawn card with a red Cardinal. She left it at the funeral home and all cards/memorials were given to me. My sister had never heard that some people believe seeing a cardinal is a sign that your loved one is at peace and will always be near you. Last night I gave her the card! She told me the day we celebrated Mom’s life she and the friend were standing together and a cardinal flew near them. She was happy she had not seen the card and didn’t know about the symbolism because on that day it would have been almost unbearable. Coincidence?

I have been seen two cardinals birds lately a male and female either on top tree in My back yard or on a table in my back patio which is near my dinning room . When I see them I think of my Mom & youner sister who both passed in june 2010 and my Father who passed in November 9th 2022. I see them almost everyday for the last 2 weeks . So I now feed them bird seed and water on top of my patio chair and when I eat breakfast in the weekend They come and eat too and sometimes I see them at dinner time or as soon as I come home I hear them and I sit and watch them eat thru my dinning room window. I take videos a d pictures of them . They make me feel happy when they come and visit me. Wish I could post a picture of them here .

My husband passed away 7/30/2019. Tonite I saw a red cardinal on a chair by my door l have been looking for a sign from him he didn’t stay long but I’m thinking it was from him

Before my sister’s passed away one in April 2022 and one November of 2022, before then I did not believe in signs, My sister was a pastor of her church, I was speaking with one of her members whose mother was listening to our converecition, I mentioned to her about seeing Cardinals, her mother told me they were signs of a love visiting, it seem it was the same one everytime, then one day I stated seeing two of them, mother told me theh where bring me a message, then my 2nd sister passed away, mother said it was a sign from one sister coming fir the 2nd sister, both of my Sisters were very religious, I cryed for weeks and still do, mother told me the both are together now and at peace, both birds are now looking after their Baby Sister, until we all are together again. There were 8 of us kids, they all are now in heaven with my Mom and Dad and now is see and have red birds on the backyard all the time, mother saids I’m so blessed to have so many love ones in heaven looking out for me, this past Spring a red bird build a nest outside my bedroom window, I sleep with my window up at night, it would wake me up between 5:30-6:00 every morning and I whisper (good morning family 🙂)and smile. I now feed the birds everyday(they sure eat a lot😅. I’m so glad the mother of our church told me about the signs. They sing so beautifully. Thank God for bringing them into my life. I miss my family so much, but I know some day I will see them all again, we all will walk around heaven together.

The Meaning of a Red Cardinal & It’s Spiritual Significance

what bird means visit from heaven

Cardinals capture your attention with their bright feathers and energetic personalities. If you keep seeing cardinals everywhere or have a special encounter with a cardinal, you may wonder if there is a deeper spiritual message. So, what does it mean if a cardinal visits you?

Cardinals represent luck, manifestation, devotion, setting boundaries, loyalty, and domestic harmony. They can show up as messengers to give you encouragement to keep pushing towards your goal, or to give you comfort after the loss of a loved one. It can be a sign of good luck to see cardinals frequently.

Depending on the context of seeing a cardinal, there may be a powerful hidden spiritual message that is being sent to you by this visitation. By paying attention to your emotions and other synchronistic messages happening at the same time, you can decipher the unique message that is being sent to you.

This article will go over the most common visitations of a cardinal and the meanings behind these encounters.

The Spiritual Meaning of a Cardinal

Cardinals are most commonly associated with their bright red plumage and mohawk like head. This bright red coat is the first thing that people notice about the bird, giving an impression of importance and strength.

Red cardinals spiritually represent energies that reside in the first three chakras, the root chakra, the sacral chakra, and the solar plexus chakra. These energies are related to domestic matters, relationships, health concerns, emotional expression, and manifestation.

The cardinal is a powerful bird that knows its placed in life and will defend its territory in an aggressive way. While this can sometimes be seen as negative, this behavior can teach us a powerful lesson at setting boundaries and taking ownership over our own energetic space.

A big lesson that cardinals are here to show you is how to feel more comfortable , secure , and have a strong sense of belonging in your own reality and your unique circle of life vortexing around you.

It is widely believed that when cardinals show up they bring with them luck and abundance . This is related to the red bird stimulating energy in your root chakra and the manifesting center allows you to bring things into your reality that are in a higher alignment to your true self. They show you what you deserve to have in life. Abundance may flow more seamlessly into your life when a cardinal is nearby.

Cardinals are birds that mate for life and their relationship has often been a metaphor for the unconditional love that we are all searching for in a partnership. This goes beyond the love of a relationship and stretches to include the unconditional love of the universe and the Divine connection that we all have.

Due to the strong attachment that cardinals have to their mate, they represent loyalty and deep devotion . The presence of cardinals can deepen your devotion that you have to a partner, or to yourself. They can show up as a positive omen for finding your soul mate or twin flame.

What Does It Mean When a Red Cardinal Visits You?

meaning of a red cardinal: it's spiritual significance

Many people report being visited by a cardinal in a synchronistic way. They just “know” that there is a spiritual message behind a red cardinal visitation. So, what does it mean if you are visited by a red cardinal?

Being visited by a red cardinal draws your attention to your physical and spiritual alignment, and to give you the clarity you need to see your higher purpose or truth. They are often referred to as “messengers of heaven” because of the strong spiritual activation that people experience when they are nearby.

A red cardinal can also be a sign that you are being contacted by your angels, spirit guides, or a loved one that has passed on. They are strongly influenced by the energetic flow of the spiritual realm and can show up precisely when we need spiritual guidance and comfort the most.

What Does it Mean If a Red Cardinal Keeps Showing up?

If a cardinal keeps showing up in your life, pay attention to the thoughts that you are having as you see them. They may reveal a pattern in your energetic programming that you are processing on a subconscious level.

Specifically, the red cardinal can show up frequently when you are learning the lessons of love, devotion, and commitment to a spiritual purpose or destiny. They help you strengthen your faith, and give you a sense of belonging that you need in order to feel secure in your environment.

Just as cardinals are devoted to their mate, they also show up to you again and again to teach you this power of love and devotion, and to let you know that you are not alone. This can be a deeply comforting message to those who have experienced trauma in their past, a deep rejection, or are processing grief after a separation.

The Meaning of a Red Cardinal In Your Yard

Red cardinals are intelligent birds, and are known for outsmarting the other birds when it comes to food competition. They visit bird feeders in yards before all the other birds have arrived, or after they all have left. They are talented at finding windows of opportunity and taking advantage of them.

Finding a red cardinal in your yard represents windows of opportunity that are available to you if you take action and follow your heart. They teach you how to live life on your own timeline so that you can take advantage of your gifts that are uniquely special to you .

They show you that your inner wisdom gives you all the tools you need to achieve success. They can also appear in your yard as a sign of luck and abundance.

If you want to draw red cardinals to your yard check out this article or the video below which gives you great tips on what seeds and feeders to use to attract them.

Meaning of a Red Cardinal Near Your Home

Related to being near your yard, you might spot red cardinals frequently near and around your home. They may be near doorways, in bushes, or hopping around the border of your home. Sometimes they can even try to get inside the home.

Red cardinals around the home stimulate energy in the root chakra where your domestic energy sits. Their red color is the same color as the root/1st chakra, enhancing its powerful vibration. The base chakra energies bring up emotions and beliefs around loyalty and a sense of belonging.

They may be showing up at your doorstep to show you the power of loyalty and how it can increase your ability to trust yourself and others . If you have experienced disloyalty for loved ones, they may show up to let you know that loyalty is the greatest gift and that you deserve it from the intimate people in your life.

If you feel lost or that you feel like you don’t feel that you belong in the life you are living, cardinals around your home can help you feel more grounded and aligned in your reality . They can help give you clarity regarding what you need to get rid of or bring into your life in order to feel like you belong.

The Meaning Of a Red Cardinal At Your Window

One of the most common sightings of a red cardinal near the home is at the widow. Many people report red cardinal pecking or scratching aggressively at windows. This is a behavior that cardinals can do if they see their reflection and confuse it with another bird in their territory. But there is also a spiritual message that is being communicated when this happens.

Cardinals appearing at your windows is a spiritual message about the importance of setting energetic boundaries. If you are an empath, this is especially important. The red cardinal can let you know the power of the word “no” or to strengthen your aura to keep other people’s energy out of your space.

The home represents your own energetic space and your strongest self-expression. The windows are like the windows of your soul and can be a weak point in our energy field if we have too porous of an energetic field. A red cardinal points out the weak areas and invites you to take back your own power and authority over your life.

Ending toxic relationships, not committing to projects that you aren’t in alignment with, and treating your time like it is the most valuable asset that you have are all ways to strengthen your energetic boundaries.

Here is a video of a cardinal that is stubbornly hitting a window that visits every day.

The Meaning of a Red Cardinal Crossing Your Path

Red cardinals are low fliers, preferring to be near the ground rather than up high. Because of this, many people report red cardinal flying right in front of them as they are walking. So, what does it mean if a red cardinal crosses your path?

Cardinals crossing your path is a sign of manifestation and taking action towards your goal. The red flash that stops you in your tracks is a sign of the power that your actions have to change the course of your reality. The cardinal is sent to give you inspiration and empower you to create a reality that is in alignment with your dreams.

The color red is associated with action, power, forward movement, and the physical manifestation of our ideas and dreams. It is strongly associated with the physical realm as the vibration that carries our hopes and dreams to their final destination.

To learn more about the color red and the power it has on your manifesting potential, check out this article here that I wrote about the power of this dynamic color on your life: The Spiritual Meaning of the Color Red

A Red Cardinal As Your Spirit Animal, Power Animal, Animal Spirit Guide, Animal Totem

If you keep seeing red cardinals everywhere or feel that you have a unique spiritual connection to this bird, it is likely that a cardinal is your spirit animal, power animal, or animal spirit guide. Cardinal can show up as your animal spirit guide to help you move through challenging life lessons or to give you strength and direction to keep moving towards your life’s purpose.

Red birds are connected to the direction North, which in shamanism or Native American tradition is seen as a connection to the home. They remind you to listen to your inner voice, and that will always guide you home. Your own inner wisdom is your North star.

You may be in a period of time where you are wanting to strengthen your sense of belonging, inner voice, and feel as though your presence on this earth can make a positive difference for the greater good. You might be in a period of aligning with a more dynamic existence in this lifetime. You feel as though there is a greater purpose to your life than what you have been living.

In Native American tradition, cardinals are linked to the number 12, which is related to the 12 months, 12 zodiac signs. 12 is the number of completion, integration, accomplishment, and wholeness. It is the number that represents your dreams being manifested into this reality.

A cardinal can show up as your spirit guide when you are syncing up to your divine timeline that allows your manifestations to come into this reality at a quicker pace. A cardinal as your spirit guide is a sign that you are a master-manifestor.

To learn more about how to connect to the cardinal animal spirit guide, you can check out this complete guide and in-depth article that I wrote about the cardinal as your spirit animal or animal spirit guide here: A Cardinal As Your Animal Spirit Guide .

A Cardinal As a Sign From Heaven

Birds are connected to the spiritual realm, often serving as a gateway for messages to be received from the spiritual realm to the earth realm. They are sensitive to the energetic flow around them and can appear as a message or sign from the heavens.

Cardinals have a unique tie to the heavens, being linked to the red cardinal of the catholic church that represents cosmic law and order and tradition. They can show up as messagers to trust, have faith, and encourage you to keep moving forward even when things appear to be challenging.

They represent deep devotion to your spiritual beliefs and let you know that there is a great purpose for everything happening in your life. Specifically, during times of grief, they can appear as messages from your soul group from the heavenly realm to let you know that you are not alone.

A Cardinal As a Sign From an Angel

Red cardinals have a unique connection to your angels, and can appear when your angels are giving your guidance or letting you know you are protected. Specifically, when cardinals appear around your home, they represent that you are being watched over.

If cardinals appear just as the same number also appears, such as 12:12, 11:11, 2:22, or 3:33, this is usually a sign that your angel is sending you a message. Pay attention to the synchronicities happening around the visitation of a cardinal to interpret the messages from your angels.

A Cardinal Appearing After the Loss of a Loved One

Perhaps the most common belief of cardinals is their connection to the deceased. They characteristically show up in people’s lives after they have lost someone very close to them. As cardinals are tapped into your soul group, deceased loved ones can send messages through the energetic flow of cardinals.

The message is to give you comfort and to let you know that they finally made it home . As cardinals represent the number 12, the direction North, and the root chakra, these all symbolically represent wholeness, completion, and finally being “home.”

They give you strength, letting you know that there is no need to worry, as they will be there waiting for you to be reunited once again.

The Cardinal Meaning Death

Similar to being connected to loved ones that have passed, cardinals can be seen near the energy of “death,” showing up at funerals, in cemeteries, and during the winter when we are in the phase of “endings.”

Cardinals are year-round creatures, celebrating the entire cycle of life from birth to death. They bring awareness to all phases of life, showing up in periods of birth and death. In this way, they represent evolution and transformation that happens during a complete cycle of life.

Cardinals show up to let you know that death should not be feared, that it is just another stage in the cycle of life that should be honored and celebrated. For as much as they represent birth and manifestation, they also show you the importance of not being overly attached to the earthly realm. Everything that we create must die eventually, so it can be reborn and evolved into a higher state of being.

The link between cardinals and death represents soul-aligned creation that can evolve without the materialistic ties that hinder your growth.

spiritual meaning of a cardinal: other types of cardinal color meanings

This article has mostly been about the red cardinal, as that is the most commonly seen type of cardinal. However, there are many types of cardinals that have different colors and spiritual meanings.

In addition, there are other elements of the cardinal that can have a spiritual meaning or message for you, such as the feathers, chirping, or time of year that it shows up.

The Meaning of Different Types of Cardinals

The meaning of finding a cardinal feather.

Feathers are linked to the spirit realm and the element of air. They represent thoughts, mental pursuits, and messages from the heavenly realm. They can show up as messages from angels, or to represent powerful spiritual ideas that you should take action on.

Red cardinal feathers can, in particular, draw your attention to your astral energies and dreams. If you find a red cardinal feather, it may be enlightening to think back to a recent dream you had and see if it is relevant in a spiritual discovery that you made today. Information you received from a dream may be relevant to your life right now.

The Meaning of a Cardinal Chirping

Cardinals can be recognized not only for their bright red feathers but also for their loud and whimsical whistles. But the uniqueness of a cardinal chirping doesn’t come from its sound; it comes from the fact that females join in on the chirping with the males. This is not common in the sphere of bird behaviors.

If you hear cardinals chirping or whistling and feel spiritually activated, this is a sign to pay attention to the deep emotional and feminine energies in your life, specifically your intuition. Your intuition can give you a clear path forward to giving momentum and power to the masculine energies of manifestation and creation in a soul-aligned way.

A Cardinal At Christmas Meaning

A bird that commonly shows up during the winter and close to the holiday Christmas is a red cardinal. Why is this? Is there a spiritual meaning?

Cardinals are year-round birds, meaning that they do not migrate south for the winter like other birds. Because of this, their bright red feathers show up with my contrast and dynamic effect in against the white of the snow.

They are often seen as Christmas birds because of this. You can find them in evergreen trees and playing in the snow while we are all opening gifts and spending time with family.

Red cardinals during the winter and in the season of Christmas represent new beginnings after the year is drawing to completion, new opportunities, renewed home, domestic harmony, and deep soul ties to the family.

The Meaning of a Cardinal in a Dream

For being a bird that is imbued in the color red and has strong ties with the physical realm, it is also strongly connected with intuition, subconscious energies, and your astral body. Because of this, red cardinals can show up in dreams and visions.

Red cardinals in dreams often give you information about your relationship and how they are impacting your life. Specifically around loyalty, boundaries, devotion, and unconditional love. If you have a negative red cardinal dream, it can mean that someone is lying to you or is being unloyal. If you have a positive cardinal dream, it can be a sign of a new relationship or a new layer of trust that is developing between you and a loved one.

Red cardinals can also give you insight into your higher purpose or deepest passions, so pay attention to the other symbolism and colors that appear in your cardinal dream. For example, if you dream of a cardinal reading a book, this could be a sign that you are destined to be a writer, editor, or educator of some kind.

Cardinals are powerful and spiritual creatures that can show up to give you messages regarding manifestation, devotion, loyalty, your higher purpose, messages from a deceased loved one or angelic beings, and encouragement to believe in your higher purpose here on earth.

Like everything on this site on and on the internet, listen to what resonates with you and disregard the rest. This is one interpretation of the spiritual meaning and messages of a cardinal, but everyone has their own unique and special intuitive language. Sit still and listen to what a red cardinal means to you and the messages that it is giving to you on your spiritual journey.

The keywords for a red cardinal are:

Birds have long been portrayed as having spiritual significance. Does the red cardinal carry biblical meaning and significance? This article will help you understand the traditions and spiritual interpretations concerning the presence of cardinals.

2 cardinals

There are several thousands of common beliefs when it comes to birds, and the most common among them is the red cardinal. Red cardinals are generally believed to be spiritual messengers connecting earth and heaven.

People always saw cardinals as a beautiful symbol of hope in the darkness. Another popular belief is that people who have died come back to life as cardinals. This bird has been around for a long time. Different cultures had different interpretations of why they are here, but they are all beautiful to look at.

What’s Being Said About the Cardinal in the Bible

It may not surprise you to learn that birds have long been portrayed as having spiritual significance in scripture. In fact, there are over 150 references in the Bible of various types of birds mentioned by name or type (Psalms 84:11). Birds signify life-giving rain from heaven, joyous singing at Jesus’ resurrection, and they even carried word back to King David about his son’s death (II Samuel 12:15-18).

Some examples are:

  • Matthew 10:16 “Be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.”
  • Luke 12:24 “Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap.”
  • Matthew 23:37 “I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks.”
  • Genesis 8:11 “And the dove came back to Noah in the evening.”
  • Psalm 50:11 “I know every bird in the mountains.”
  • Isaiah 40:31 “They who wait for the Lord … shall mount up with wings like eagles.”

Entryway between Earth and Spirit

The word cardinal is derived from the Latin word “cardo”, which means hinge. Much like a door hinge, the cardinal is represented as an entryway between earth and spirit. They carry the message to and fro.

The Holy Spirit is described as a red cardinal as He renders two elements, white light, and red flames. White light depicts the purity and peace in the light of the spirit, and red flames represent fire elements.

The Blood of Christ

blood-of-Christ

“By His blood, we are freed from sin to serve the living God, to glorify Him, and to enjoy Him forever.” – 2 Corinthians 5:17

Also, red cardinals are symbolized the living blood of Jesus Christ. In the Christian context, both the Blood of Jesus and Cardinals are used as symbols of vitality, and that vitality is everlasting. Scripture clearly says:

The red cardinal represents life, hope, life, and restoration.

Are Cardinals representing God?

The common belief which has been traded from generation to generation is that the “Red cardinal represents God”. However, when doing the reality check with the Bible there is no direct reference to it.

cardinals representing god

Meanwhile, there are several instances throughout Scripture that mentions things being red like the blood of Jesus Christ and the scarlet cord which the Rahab dangled from her window to safeguard Joshua and his team in Jericho. However, these scripture references highlight the red color; there isn’t anything that alludes straightforwardly to the red cardinal bird.

By the way, we also wrote about the dead cardinal meaning , in case you’re interested.

What Does it Mean When God Sends Cardinals – is a Cardinal a sign from God?

There is an old tradition quoting, “When a red cardinal visits your yard, it’s a visitor from heaven”. People usually ponder, does the cardinal is a sign from God, and what is the red cardinal biblical meaning. What does it mean when God sends a red cardinal to your house?

The red cardinal bird symbolizes the phases of restoring when going through great difficulties with greater hope in God. The red cardinal birds are viewed as the symbols of keeping faith irrespective of the tough times, which comes in our life. They remind us to glue with the Lord even in times of despair.

It is said that one can notice the cardinal spiritual symbolism comes at times of great pressure and distress. Their arrival signifies that our life would be restored and will be filled with colors and vitality. They tend to extend their support for your state of mind to realize your role as a person in society.

is a cardinal a sign from God?

The bright red color emphasizes the vicious cycle of human life, and irrespective of your current stage, you will surely get a chance to restore, revitalize and continue with the journey of life with renewed levels of energy.

The red cardinals would cheer you and would instill hope – they call you to deviate from your routine, ordinary life of sorrow and would lift your soul.

The Bible is the source for Christians to believe anything or to follow because the Scriptures are God-breathed. Bible never said any signs of cardinal and looking for signs of cardinal wouldn’t please God.

Does God Send Birds as Signs?

Does God send birds as signs

It is undeniable that God has used birds and animals throughout the scripture as a sign to intimate or teach humans about his will. Even Jesus, when He stood up from the rivers of Jordan after baptizing Holy Spirit in the form of a dove sat on Him.

God used a rooster to let know peter about his denial of Christ and we can say several instances. A dove was used by Noah to check whether the flood water has drained.

God has used eagles, doves, sparrows, ravens, and many other kinds of birds to demonstrate his love, care, and restoration for his nation Israel. It has been found that there are around 300 verses in the Bible that say about birds.

god-like cardinal

Out of these more than a hundred saying uses the word “fowl” or “bird” leaving the readers to guess about what the spices could be.

Lord has used birds fittingly to teach us spiritual lessons throughout the Scripture. These are a couple of verses in the Bible that directly denote birds. In the Lord put I my trust: how to say ye to my soul, Flee as a bird to your mountain?” (Ps. 11: 1).

“ Like a sparrow in its flitting, like a swallow in its flying, a curse that is causeless does not alight ” (Prov. 26:2) The birds of the air have nests; … but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head” (Matt. 8:20)

cardinal green background

There are many occurrences in the scripture where birds are specifically talked about. Jesus Christ used birds in many of his parables but there are no instances of the Holy Bible using red cardinal birds in any form.

If you are personally reminded of what Jesus has done for you by a red cardinal, I believe that he would be honored if you thought of him and thanked him at that moment (I would think that is the real red cardinal biblical meaning).

When it comes to a deeper study of God, sending us reminders from loved ones in heaven, that is for another time.

Are cardinals mentioned in the bible?

I recently learned that the word ‘cardinal’ isn’t mentioned in the Bible, but there are a few birds with symbolic significance. The eagle, dove, and raven all have deeper meanings associated with them within the Christian faith: they can symbolize anything from divine protection to peace or even God’s presence. In this light, some take red cardinals as symbols of guidance and protection too – although it’s not an interpretation widely accepted by scholars or mainstream Christianity. Ultimately what each bird means is shaped both by personal beliefs and cultural context; so we should be mindful when interpreting these symbols!

Are cardinals a good omen?

When we witness a vibrant cardinal, it’s easy to feel a spiritual connection that transcends the physical realm. This lovely bird can be seen as an uplifting reminder of our departed family and friends – living on in spirit and reminding us they are ever by our side with love, offering us peace during difficult times.

Are cardinals from heaven?

Have you ever seen a majestic red cardinal perched atop an old maple tree? In many cultures, this vibrant creature is not only admired for its exquisite beauty but thought to be a messenger of the divine. Believers credit cardinals with bringing messages from heaven or even beloved relatives who have passed on.

My son just got a tattoo of a red cardinal in memory of his best friend who passed away very young. I looked up Red Cardinal and came across this lovely article. Paul was a true Christian and now I know why Kevin got this tattoo.

How can I share this lovely article to my FB page?

That was beautiful. I recently lost my husband of 23 years, we were best friends for 30 years so we felt we were soul mates. I got into a depression and I am trying to find my way out. His daughter in law, bless her heart, sent me a birthday gift and it was, “are you ready?” A beautiful stained glass photo of a cardinal. When I opened it, I felt breathless. I knew there was a meaning behind he cardinal but had to look it up and that is when I found you. Thank you so very much Linda

I had just finished praying for a family member and walked to my back door screen taking in all of God’s creation and crying over the fact that He saved me, when suddenly a Red Cardinal landed on my clothesline just a few feet away! Immediately I ran to look this up and found this article, Holy Spirit of Jesus thank you so much for everything that You do for us each and everyday in sickness and in health. Hallelujah in Christ

I was just thinking about finding the right direction for a great job. My thoughts were God has always provided for me, and it will be at the right time, and place. I opened my curtains and saw this red cardinal looking directly at me and then he flew closer to the window at me. After reading the meaning, I was praising God and felt a relief of gratification. I’m looking forward to a brighter future, everything is going to be alright. Thank you Lord…Amen

tomorrow wll be 22 years snce my wonderful husband passed was sttng n my screen almost n tears and all of a sudden a red cardnal perched on the tree next to my screen room and for the longest tme just seemed to stare at me

The Lord has always spoken to me in nature. I absolutely love birds and purchased 2 bird feeders and hung them out my balcony window. You cannot rush God’s creation, and finally on Palm Sunday that’s when the beautiful and majestic Red Cardinal paid me a visit! He landed on the perch and was just so regal!

I kept saying Praise The Lord! Then it snowed on April 1st and the Red Cardinal visited again and the backdrop of the white snow with his intense red was breathtaking. Thank You Lord Jesus for always speaking to me and showing your love towards me. You know what makes me smile Lord Jesus! I praise Your Holy Name Forever & Ever! I love You Lord Jesus! Amen & Amen!

I was extremely relieved to come across your article. It becomes difficult to find information in a time where people look to unhealthy avenues to decipher. I had prayed not 10 hours before and asked God for a sign that my dad was (in some capacity) around me. The following morning a cardinal came all the way under our patio, to the back windows and hovered a bit; he left and I’ve not seen another since. I feel God answered my prayer and it was His way of giving me strength, showing me love and lifting me up. PTL! ?

I was walking in Nature, I looked up and was astounding by seeing 3 red cardinals playing the tree. It was breathtaking. When my husband tried to take a pic, the birds flew away. I heard in my Spirit “the Best lens are your eyes” Yesterday, my neighbor introduced herself to me and we started talking about feathers that her and I have seen. Then she brings up the 3 cardinals, she said it was in scripture. So I searched for it, and I see the article. Thank so much. I pray everyone Love and Peace forevermore ❤️?

This is so beautiful reading everyone comments. Thank you so much for this wonderful website. Every day a red cardinal, come and sit in my tree in my front yard and also on my front porch. About two months ago a little brown bird made a nest in my flower pot, so I water my flowers every day. So my flower pot looked strange and I look in it and there was five white eggs… after a couple of days I look inside again and five baby birds was inside crying for their mother. I felt so happy to see that this bird, came to my house to give life to her babies. I feel special. I love God with all my heart and nature. Now I am hanging birds feeder in my trees and I have so many birds around. Thank you.

Your bird tales are totally heartwarming! Happy to hear our website brings smiles. Enjoy your feathered friends!

I believe Red Cardinals are signs that our loved one’s are giving us hope, and they want us to know everything will be alright. And they want us to focus more on God’s promises. And they are still with us.

Dear Regina!

I love your take on Red Cardinals! It’s exactly what I was getting at in the article. Seeing them as signs from loved ones and reminders of God’s promises is really special.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Keep an eye out for those Cardinals, and keep believing in their beautiful messages!

Take care, Richard

This article is so inspiring. Thanks for sharing.

Dear Wanda, I’m so glad you found it inspiring! Thank you for letting me in on this. 😊

I really enjoyed the comments here. They all describe my feelings. I too love God with all my being. On my deck I have cardinals and blue Jay’s sit on the rail and listen to me talk to them. They calm me and give me hope. I think of my faith and thank God for standing by me.

Hi Cecilia, it’s lovely how cardinals and blue jays on your deck bring you comfort and hope. Nature has such a special way of offering solace. Cherish these moments, and thanks for sharing your heartwarming experience with us. Cheers Richard

Cardinals Have a Special Meaning. Here's What Experts Say About Their Symbolism

The beautiful red birds could be trying to tell you something when they show up in your yard or at your window.

Are cardinals messengers from heaven?

What is the superstition behind cardinals, what does seeing a cardinal mean for my relationship, what does seeing a cardinal mean if i'm mourning a loss, what are some other birds it might be a good omen to see, how do i bring cardinals into my yard.

For even the most casual birdwatcher or nature lover , there's something so uplifting about seeing a male northern cardinal. The candy apple red birds with the short orange beaks and the adorable crest bring brightness to even the dreariest day, and their whistled song is just as sweet as their appearance. With a U.S. range that extends through much of the territory east of the Rockies as well as the Desert Southwest, these winged wonders are celebrated as the designated birds of a whopping seven states .

But did you know that the bird is noteworthy for more than just his pretty plumage and cheery cheeps? There is an important meaning and symbolism behind a cardinal, and when you see one it just might bring a message of hope, much like the angel numbers 11:11 , 444 , and 1212 do when they appear in your life.

Because cardinals are private birds that favor dense tangles and often fly low and close to the tree line, seeing one should be considered a gift, according to Janet Rae Orth , a clairvoyant, intuitive, and energy healer who can communicate with animals.

"They are thus a symbol of optimism," she says. "Some consider them a sign of divine intervention in your life...In many cultures throughout the world, the vibrant red color of the cardinal is a symbol of good luck and abundance. It is also said to represent vitality. If a cardinal crosses your path, it is meant to give you strength and hope."

Of course, depending on your situation, a cardinal might come bearing a more specific message, perhaps around grief, a romantic relationship or even matters of faith. To find out more, we checked in with a panel of expert spiritualists and animal communicators. Here's what they had to say.

What does a cardinal mean spiritually?

While most songbirds migrate, flying to and from Central and South America in the fall and spring, cardinals are permanent U.S. residents. Their beautiful red hue provides a much-needed burst of color on dull and drab winter days, and a reminder, notes Aycee Brown , psychic channel and medium, that "even in the bleakness of winter, beauty and song can persist. So, cardinals often represent hope, especially during tough times."

According to Brown, who says that cardinals come up "quite a bit" in her work, the birds may act as a kind of courier from the sweet hereafter, sent to bring tidings of comfort and guidance.

"During readings, if someone mentions a deceased loved one and a cardinal suddenly appears outside the window, it can be a way for that spirit to say hello or show they're listening," she says. "Sometimes, it's more of an intuitive nudge. I might be getting the feeling of strong, unwavering love for someone during a reading, and then a cardinal pops into my head. It's like a confirmation that this message of love is important for the person I'm working with."

Because cardinals are present in all seasons, from barren winter to fruitful summer, they may also represent renewal, transformation and manifestation, spiritual and otherwise. It's also a common belief that when one crosses your path, it signals a new beginning is ahead. In trying times or not, you should pay attention—you may need to think about making a change in your life.

It shouldn't be a surprise that redbirds (as they're known in the South) are often associated with the spirit realm. After all, they're said to have been named after Roman Catholic Church cardinals, who wear scarlet-shaded robes and peaked caps, similar to the cute crest the feathered type of cardinals sport. But the link doesn't end there. A group of avian cardinals is sometimes called a Vatican, and some say the bird's crimson color signifies the blood of Christ, his salvation, and promise of eternal life.

Although cardinals aren't specifically mentioned by name in the Bible, birds in general sometimes act as messengers for God in the Old Testament, so it's not a big leap to believe they could be carrying a message of hope or comfort from spirits, angels, or even the Heavenly Father.

"But ultimately, the meaning of a cardinal sighting is a personal experience," Brown says. "If you see a cardinal and feel a sense of peace, a connection to a loved one, or a surge of hope, it could be interpreted as a message from your higher power or angels, depending on your individual beliefs."

Indigenous Americans have a rich tradition of folklore around the animal world, and the cheerful cardinal is no exception. Perhaps because they tend to mate for life , and males may even appear to kiss females when they feed them during courtship, the Choctaws have long associated the bird with romance. In one Choctaw myth , a clever cardinal acts as a matchmatcher, bringing together a virtuous maiden and a lonely brave.

Astrid Bly, premier advisor with California Psychics , says that while the Choctaws see "the cardinal as a positive sign that you may be getting closer to a healthy and happy relationship...in other Native American cultures, cardinals can predict weather changes and protect from illnesses." She adds, "The Cherokee people give the bird an association with femininity, being known as the daughter of the sun."

According to legend , the daughter of the sun was slain and the Cherokee people had to journey to Ghost Country and bring her back to restore light to their homeland. As they opened the box they carried her in, a beautiful redbird flew out and began singing. When the Sun smiled, they knew the cardinal was his daughter.

When cardinals appear to you, it usually means nothing but goodness for you and your beloved, with their lifelong partnership suggesting a strong, unwavering bond. "They are a symbol of devotion and loyalty," Orth says of the bird. "This includes representing domestic harmony and new or renewed romance. So they may be a sign that you have a happy home life, with a devoted partner you can trust. Or if you're single, that new love is coming."

Not only are cardinals monogamous , but they are also usually territorial during breeding season, attacking other birds and even their own reflection. They live their entire lives in one area, with both males and females pitching in to raise the brood. Even after the chicks have matured, they stay with their parents, forming a family unit.

Their faithfulness and dedication to each other make "the cardinal a symbol meant to encourage us to trust more deeply," says Orth. "The cardinal is letting us know that our loved ones can be counted on. That things will be ok. They are encouraging us to be steadfast in our path and purpose."

Take solace if a cardinal appears to you while you are grieving, for many people believe they bring messages from loved ones who have crossed over to the other side, making us feel connected to them and comforted even in our sadness. Specifically, according to Brown, a cardinal's appearance is meant to show us that we are not alone, with their beautiful red feathers signifying enduring love. As a popular phrase says, "When cardinals appear, angels are near."

"Seeing a cardinal is a sign that your loved ones or angels are near," Orth confirms. "That they are there to protect, bless and guide you....They are offering you love and encouragement. If you see a cardinal right after the passing of a loved one, they are letting you know they made it home. Letting you know not to worry, you will be reunited again."

As meaningful as cardinals are, they are not the only birds that portend happier times ahead. Doves are widely recognized as symbols of peace, love and new beginnings, Brown says, so seeing one could signify a calming of tensions, a blossoming relationship, or a fresh start. And spotting an eagle, which are associated with strength, leadership and freedom, might "be interpreted as a message to embrace your power, take charge, or pursue your goals with determination," she adds.

Meanwhile, the feisty blue jay symbolizes fearlessness and determination, with hummingbirds known "for bringing good energy, resilience, and happiness," says Bly.

Happily, northern cardinals are a plentiful species in the U.S. and thrive in habitats where humans also dwell. With a still-increasing population of roughly 110 million individuals, provided you live within their range, it shouldn't be difficult to entice a few of these beauties into your yard by following these tips:

  • Put out platform or tray feeders filled with dark-colored berries, sunflower and safflower seeds and suet crumbles.
  • Provide fresh water in open basins filled a couple of inches deep.
  • Plant a mixture of dense, native shrubs, bushes and trees on your property, including pine and spruce, box elder, shrub roses and grapevine. Keep pruning to a minimum, so you maintain some cardinal-friendly thickets.

Bird visits can carry many different spiritual meanings, like “take some time to connect with nature” or “there’s a strong spiritual presence in your home.” Specific types of birds are known to carry certain messages, too—for instance, magpies are thought to be a symbol of positivity and good luck. Read on to learn exactly what a bird visit means for you, and what a specific bird could be trying to tell you.

Things You Should Know

  • Bird visits can represent incoming messages from the spiritual world.
  • Alternatively, bird visits can be an encouraging reminder to embrace your future and independence.
  • A visit from a cardinal is believed to be a visit from a deceased loved one.

What does it mean when a bird visits you?

What Does It Mean when a Bird Visits You Step 1

  • Cardinals: According to some myths and superstitions, a visit from a cardinal is a visit from a loved one who has passed on. [1] X Research source In Cherokee culture specifically, cardinals are viewed as the transporters of the deceased, as well as bringers of both positive and negative news. [2] X Research source
  • Finches: In Celtic culture, finches are seen as symbols of prosperity. In Native American culture, they carry a similar meaning of positivity and blessings in the future. [3] X Research source Some spiritualists associate finches with themes like personal growth and belief in oneself.
  • Hummingbirds: In Native American culture and mythos, hummingbirds are associated with themes like good fortune and healing. In Mexican culture, hummingbirds symbolize messages from the spiritual realm or spirits themselves (like a deceased loved one). [4] X Research source
  • Doves: Doves are often seen as symbols of love, since doves are closely associated with the goddess of love (Aphrodite) in Greek mythology. [5] X Research source Some spiritualists claim that seeing a dove is a sign to prioritize and pursue love more regularly in your life. Many Christians associate doves with the Holy Spirit, as the Holy Spirit takes the form of a dove when Jesus is baptized. [6] X Research source
  • Blue Jays: Visiting blue jays are often believed to carry important messages, since blue jays themselves are associated with communication. In many cases, blue jays serve as a positive reminder to make good friendships and spend quality time with your loved ones.
  • Owls: In Greek mythology, the goddess Athena (and owls, one of her major symbols) were closely associated with wisdom. [7] X Research source By extension, many spiritualists connect owls and owl sightings/visits with themes of wisdom. Some even believe that owls can be an omen of good fortune and money.
  • Crows: Among the superstitious, crows are associated with negative themes like illness and even death. [8] X Research source Because of this, some spiritualists believe that a visiting crow carries warnings of impending danger or misfortune. Not all people see crows in a negative light, though! Some view them as symbols of change rather than misfortune.
  • Magpie: Some people believe that magpies represent good luck—so, if you notice a magpie visiting you, good things may lie in store for you!

Expert Q&A

  • As is the case with most spiritual topics, a bird visit is what you make of it. Trust your intuition as you interpret the real reason why a feathered friend is hanging around. [9] X Research source Thanks Helpful 2 Not Helpful 1
  • If a bird flies into your window, it likely means that the bird mistook the clear glass for the horizon. If this happens, help the bird by putting it into a cardboard box in a dark and quiet area. If it still seems in bad shape after a few hours, call a wildlife rehabilitator for help. Wild For Birds

And anything else wild, furry or feathered… all photographs © heidi farmer, cardinals – signs from heaven.

As most of you know, I developed a relationship of sorts with birds after the death of my mother a couple of years ago.  It’s a fine line to walk when you’re writing about birds you feel are visiting you from “up there”, but when it’s happening to you there is no denying the possibility.

As the holidays approach, the cardinals are popping even more now against grey skies and barren trees. The luscious, bright, bold red color is just heavenly.  Heavenly… can we talk about this for a minute?

3D2A3384

Many have contacted me regarding their own experiences with cardinals after losing a family member.  They speak of times when in need of advice, or feeling down, a cardinal will appear out of nowhere.   If you google “cardinal symbolism” this quote shows up frequently in the results:

“ A cardinal is a representative of a loved one who has passed. When you see one, it means they are visiting you. They usually show up when you most need them or miss them. They also make an appearance during times of celebration as well as despair to let you know they will always be with you. Look for them, they’ll appear .”  –   author unknown

Don’t believe?  Keep reading…

A few days ago, I came across this photo in a photography group I belong to on Facebook. I thought it was another cleverly photoshopped image… until I read the actual post.

“ Not really an artistic shot but a personal favorite. This was shot a few days after my mother’s death after a late winter storm. She would have loved to see this! I inherited my love of birds from her. There were more than 80 cardinals that morning , I only managed to get 50+ in the picture. And no, this is not photoshopped! I’ve never seen anything like this since that day. ” – Jean Kuns

This photo already had 422 likes, 28 shares, and 67 empathetic comments from believers and other members who were equally amazed.  I contacted Jean Kuns immediately feeling elated that I had found another “human” who has experienced and documented such an experience.   This was, after all, an incredible justification of my own experiences.

I asked Jean’s permission to share the photo, and kindly she sent it along with a few others from that day.  The following image of hers took my breath away.  Never have I seen so many male cardinals huddled so closely together in one spot.  They are incredibly territorial, so this is an unusually rare sight.

  • The male cardinal fiercely defends its breeding territory from other males. When a male sees its reflection in glass surfaces, it frequently will spend hours fighting the imaginary intruder. – The Cornell Lab of Ornithology

I’m still stunned by the number of cardinals in these images, and since first laying eyes on them these photos have not left my mind.  Yesterday, I looked out of our kitchen window and saw two males perched up high in our tree.

An unusual sight and sign for me to get writing and tell the story.  Would love to hear yours if you’d like to share, and if you want to dive deeper check out the following links dedicated to cardinal symbolism with similar stories:

So, keep those eyes open for a little red visitor.  You could be driving down a road and see a flash of red fly in front, or over, you.  Out for a walk you may hear one, or see one perched in a tree you’re walking by.  That sight just might give you the pick-me-up you need if you’re missing someone over the holidays, or any time of year.

My husband of 15 years, and I have been going through a rough year, and had decide to separate, while we tried to work on our relationship, he was dropping me off at our first home, and he was packing his vehicle leaving for our second home. We were saying our tearful goodbyes, when suddenly, a cardinal flew into our garage. I said, this has to be a good sign. He was irritated for the delay, having to find a net to coax the bird out to freedom….I laughed and cheerfully changed the monument to a happy and playful one to free our beautiful red sign of hope and peace.

Kim, I love that story. Thank you so much for sharing and cheers to hope and peace!

I’m a true believer that Cardinals appear after a love one passes away. Yesterday day we had to let my grandpup a 4 year old cheagle enter Doggie Heaven due to a spinal cord injury. Today white taking my other 4 year old grandpup out for a ride after losing her beloved cousin, playmate and bestfriend a Beautiful Red Cardinal Appeared letting me know that our Rudy was letting us know she was fine and put a smile on my face. The Cardinals has always come to us after we had to say goodbye to a loved one. My Mother in law passed away Nov1,2021 and a Cardinal flew on our back porch while my husband was standing in the doorway,my daughter was able to pick the bird up and take a picture before letting him free.My husband sent pictures to all that was grieving our loss. The Birds are such a Blessing to our Souls

For me it is blue birds-my mother loved them. Allow each to discover their own meaningful symbols.

Yes, each has his/her own and important to find whatever is speaking to him or her – always! Blue birds are wonderful – lucky you!

Like to follow.

I lost my mom in August 2020, and my dad July 2019. Recently I encountered a sign, an OBVIOUS sign. A napkin with a grease “heart” stain. The reason it symbolizes my mom I believe is because she used to doodle on napkins all the time. she was an artist. This heart was perfect. I was having tooth surgery the next Morning and I felt it was her wishing me good luck, but my aunt just brought to my attention because the dentist couldn’t remove my tooth, because of my heart rate decremented to 40, she thinks it was a warning instead. Either way, I feel its amazing.

Wow – what a nice way to look at that, Jenna. Hope you tooth is ok and I enjoyed that story!

My grandfather passed the day after thanksgiving. My parents are avid birdwatchers and caregivers. Christmas morning a cardinal flew in the window. No surprise. Sometimes a bird gets spooked and hits the window. My mom rushed out and scooped it up and held it until it was ready to fly away. She said she held it a good 30 minutes or so. It might seem crazy but I really think God sent the cardinal to my dad. My grandpa was a family man and it just makes sense that this would happen. Grandpa used to put food out for the birds all the time when he had his farm.

Thank you for sharing your special story, Valerie!

My young wife passed away in 2019. She stood by me through many things. I always see or hear cardinals around my house. Every morning when I walk the dog I see cardinals. They’ll usually fly closer to my vehicle as I’m leaving. Perhaps it’s my imagination but I like to think it’s her watching over me

Drew I am so sorry for your loss, and what a wonderful way to think of her. Thank you for sharing this.

My mother passed away on thanksgiving day of 2020. Today while I took me a break at work I seen a red bird on my car, I really feel like it was her and now I know she is really watching over me. I miss her so bad 😔

Last week my husband was driving home and a hawk flew so close to his truck that it’s shadow could be seen on the road and he could see its belly as it flew across the road in front of him. Today, he called me to say that a hawk just did the same thing. Don’t know if it was the same one but, wow. He also said when he went around the curve in our driveway there were three red cardinals sitting in the bushes about 6 feet away from each other. I see a red cardinals around here often but never that close together. I’ve always heard that red birds were family members or even angels checking in on you. And the other day one of my cats had caught a blue jay and brought it in the house. It was still alive so I was able to get it from the cat by placing a towel over it and picking it up. It was so still that I thought it was really hurt but it was looking around, calm and even leaned into my finger when I touched its head. It didn’t fight to get away and would just look at me. I carried it outside and as soon as I placed it on a bale of hay it flew away. Both of my in-laws have passed away as well as a cousin and uncle that husband was very close to and my father passed away over 20years ago. I wonder why we(especially my husband who I think is an empath like me)have so many bird visitors?

I am Michelle Gintzler. I am an avid bird lover. And I love all animals. I truly believe in the afterlife. And I truly do believe that cardinals most definitely are a sign from Heaven.

I am Michelle Gintzler. I had written before. My mother just died this past Monday May 9th. The day after Mothers’ Day. Wednesday May 11th the day of her funeral. I went to my Uncle and Aunt’s house to sit Shiva for my mother with my sister and brother. And before I got out of my sister’s jeep I told her that I had just seen a male and female cardinal in my relatives’ trees. I told my sister Sharon that I believe it was a sign from the afterlife. She said that it was my mother and father from Heaven. I wholehearted truly do believe that. It had to have been. Seeing is truly believing. Michelle

My mother Phyllis instilled in me my undying love for birds. And I have had birds my whole life. So I truly do believe that she is giving me signs from the afterlife. Michelle

My mom passed on March 24, 2021. She loved watching the birds flock to the feeders she had my dad hang out on the patio outside their sliding glass doors. She and my dad would spend hours watching the birds and squirrels enjoy their feast as my parents played cards and drank coffee. While having dinner with my dad a few days ago he once again shared how much enjoyment my mom got from watching the birds. He then proceeded to tell us that, just that morning, he saw the reddest cardinal he had ever seen at the feeder and how he had never noticed that bird there before. At the time I did not know about cardinals representing our loved ones. I now truly believe that was a message from my mom and I will be on the lookout for cardinals from this day forward.

The last couple of days a male cardinal has been on my deck railing outside my patio door chirping away. Today he has returned to my tree next to my dining room window, with the female, he is still chirping away. What does this mean. I have seen them in the yard in the summer, but never the way they are this year.

Could the passing of a cat warrant a visit? Our cat,Snowman, went missing Tuesday and since then I’ve seen a couple of red birds every time I go outside. This morning be was singing do loud I want go may back porch and be kept jumping from limb to limb getting as close as possible without landing on me. He did this for at least 10 minutes until I had to go inside. I haven’t seen him since..

I stumbled on this through google when I asked the question about other people’s experiences with Cardinals and I wanted ro compare with mine. We had a cardinal come and visit. See in Nov 2020 we lost our mom. Her passing has made a huge impact on me and the family. We have been missing her so much and have been struggling with her absence. 3 weeks ago we had a family cookout we were all here. This cardinal came and stayed with us for over 2 hours. At first it went directly to my dad at the BBQ. She took food from his hand! Lol I know not so wise to feed sausages but it was comical to us thinking, mom says too much salt! Ha. She stayed and hopped on all our shoulders, took blueberries from our hands, each one of us and our kids too. It seemed to stick around and get excited when we called the kids outside. She was not scarred of sudden moments or sound. Not even a peep when the dogs were around. When we spoke to it because at this point we were convinced the essence of this bird is mom, she moved her head and open her beak. It was unbelievable. This experience blew our minds! It was so beautiful. It was impossible to not believe that this was a gift/ blessing. Even to an optimist like my dad who has now become a believer, he has embraced this experience and is welcoming to more visits.

Last week I was driving around for work (home care psw) and I was seeing cardinals everywhere I looked every day. On Tuesday my husband went in for a routine surgery and after ended up losing 3L of blood, over half of it. I almost lost home. I believe it was our loved ones letting us know they were here for us.

My younger and only sister, whom I was very close with, suddenly passed away a month ago. I live in New York City and have a tiny little yard behind my house to my garage. For the past week, I have been seeing a cardinal here. The first two days it was a bright red one, and now it’s a light orange/brown one. I have never seen a cardinal here in all of my 23 years of living here. I would like to believe it is a sign from my sister, as I have been very distraught upon losing her.

Hello Sophia, I am Michelle. I live in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. I totally believe in these supernatural things. I love birds, and I have birds. And I do believe that cardinals are signs from the afterlife. I feel for you. I am so very sorry you lost your one and only sister. Cardinals are known to be a sign from the afterlife. I truly do believe that. Michelle

I love this story. I am in San Antonio Texas. I lost my beloved sister who was a USAF Col for 34 years and I look everyday to try to see one. Are there any in this area? I keep looking and hoping I could use the comfort of seeing one. Thank you all for lifting me up with by sharing your comments on your loved ones.

One day before a month to her passing, as I was driving along the highway, a bright red Cardinal was just standing on the side of the road, as if it was just waiting for me to pass. Just as I was going to pass, it flew right in front ( of course I didn’t hit it) however, prior to seeing to Cardinal,I was crying out loud for my mother. I knew instantly, what seeing the Cardinal meant. SHE’S ALRIGHT!! God is good!! Angels of God….. Thank you Mama ❤️

What Does It Mean When You Are Visited by a Cardinal?

Spring is a time for renewal and rebirth. After a long winter, it's always a relief to see some color appear from the seemingly endless drabness, even in warmer climates.

Spring is also a time in many areas of the country when cardinals seem to be everywhere, bringing with them their familiar (and quite complicated !) song. The red flash is even more vibrant in areas where there may still be snow cover.

What does it mean when you spot a cardinal?

There are many iterations of the cardinal story, but most seem to relate in some way to the passing of loved ones. It's commonly thought a cardinal sighting is a connection to the afterlife which brings you closer you to a person who meant a lot to you. It's a sign that they miss you but they are okay.

Other versions of the symbolic connection go so far as to say that the cardinal is the actual incarnation of the lost soul visiting you.

In a popular video from 2019, a cardinal is seen "visiting" two sisters after they reportedly asked their late mother to send one to them as a sign. Whether you believe it or not, it's pretty powerful.

What does it mean when a cardinal wants to enter your home?

Things can get really interesting with cardinal encounters if you suddenly have one knocking at your window. With so many cardinals visiting birdfeeders, this is bound to happen, but it can be an unsettling experience—especially to those who subscribe to the cardinal symbolism.

Bird experts will tell you the male cardinal (they are the brighter red of the sexes) is actually coming at his own reflection in the window, and stopping this can be quite difficult. K-State has some advice on how to do that, with solutions ranging from applying decals to simply closing your blinds.

Interestingly, this advice is similar to what you'd do if you want to avoid unwanted visitors.

What does it mean if a red bird visits you?

Katie Lawler

Seeing a red bird or a cardinal in your yard can be a delightful experience. With their bright red plumage, these birds immediately catch our eye. Beyond their vibrant beauty, could the appearance of a red bird signify anything deeper? Many symbolic meanings are attached to cardinal sightings, so the brief visit from one of these striking birds may deliver an important spiritual message.

Quick Answers

Here are some quick answers to what it could mean if a red bird visits you:

  • Cardinals symbolize vitality, renewal, good luck, and spirituality.
  • A red bird sighting could signify cheerfulness and a positive outlook.
  • In many cultures, red cardinals foretell an incoming visitor.
  • Red birds represent passion and romance.
  • A cardinal sighting reminds us to live our truth and express ourselves.
  • Seeing a red bird after a loss symbolizes that a loved one’s spirit lives on.

Cardinals Symbolize Vitality and Renewal

With their bright red plumage, cardinals grab our attention, bringing a sense of vitality with their movement and energetic song. Many associate the northern cardinal with renewal and revival, likely tied to this bird’s connection with the coming of spring. As one of the first bright spots of color in the yard after a long winter, the cardinal’s return brings hope of new beginnings.

Cardinals are active, noisy birds, seldom seen sitting still for long periods. We connect their constant motion and noisy chattering to the spirit of life itself. A splash of red from a cardinal reminds us of the animation that surrounds us, lifting our own energy and vitality.

Cardinals Bring Good Luck and Spirituality

In many cultures, spotting a red cardinal is considered good luck. There are several folk legends that contribute to this view of the cardinal as a fortunate bird:

  • An old European legend states that the cardinal gets its bright red color from the blood of Christ as it removed a thorn from his body when he was crucified.
  • Eastern European legend says the cardinal is a symbol of everlasting vitality because it renews itself by dipping its wings in its own blood.

With this association with spiritual ideas like renewal and the blood of Christ, it’s no surprise the cardinal earns an esteemed reputation. The red bird offers us a message right from the divine when it appears.

A Sign of an Incoming Visitor

In many Native American cultures, spotting a red cardinal foretells the arrival of a visitor. Cherokee legend states that cardinals served as a lookout around camps, their scarlet color alerting them to guests headed their way.

Noting the cardinal’s association with hospitality, front doors and porches in the southern United States often feature cardinal decor as a warm welcome to visitors. Keep an eye out after a cardinal sighting for a friend or family member to soon drop by.

Red Birds Symbolize Passion and Romance

The gorgeous red plumage of cardinals also connects them to feelings of passion, love, and romance:

  • In tarot, the card representing the cardinal is known as the “lover’s card,” evoking new romance and partnerships.
  • Some Native American tales describe the cardinal as a matchmaker who can influence romantic outcomes when we are open to love.
  • Roman mythology linked the cardinal to Venus, representing beauty and desire.

So if you’ve been hoping cupid’s arrow finds its mark, a cardinal sighting may be a good omen of passion and romance to come. The brilliant red feathers can ignite our own vibrancy when love comes our way.

Express Yourself Freely

As a bird noted for its colorful plumage and loud songs, the cardinal reminds us to freely express ourselves. Like the male cardinal crooning its distinctive whistle, we are prompted to live authentically and vocally share our truth without restraint.

The cardinal doesn’t camouflage itself but instead boldly displays its bright red feathers for all to see. When we see or hear a cardinal, we should remember to sing out our passions and stay true to our vivacious spirit.

Loved Ones Live On

Spotting a red cardinal after the loss of a loved one is often considered a sign that the departed’s spirit lives on and they are watching over you.

Cardinals appear when you need them most, visiting as messengers of hope, renewal, and connection to the afterlife. Both their bright color and energetic presence signal the vitality of a loved one’s soul continuing its journey, bringing you comfort and closure.

Whether we glimpse a brilliant red cardinal perched on a branch or hear its whistling song, a sighting of this bird brings a range of symbolic meanings. With its stunning scarlet plumage, the cardinal radiates vitality and passion. Its appearance often signifies renewal, hope, and new romantic adventures. Many cultures consider the cardinal a spiritual messenger, sending us guidance when we need it most. When we spy this eye-catching bird, we should reflect on its uplifting message and express our vibrant spirit freely.

what bird symbolizes death of a loved one

Birds are exquisitely beautiful creatures that are regarded as spiritual life forms. They have been recognized as a good omen, but what bird symbolizes death of a loved one? How would you know that they represent your dearly departed family, or warn you about an impending death?

In this post, we will talk about ten birds that signify the death. The list includes vultures, cardinals, sparrows, crows, owls, bats, ravens, robins, cuckoos, and blackbirds.

Table of Contents

Bird Species That Symbolizes Death of Family

Birds messengers of the dead, bird #1: vultures, bird #2: cuckoo, bird #3: cardinals, bird #4: robin, bird #5: crow, bird #6: ravens, bird #7: bats, bird #8: blackbird, bird #9: sparrow.

Millions of bird enthusiasts believe in the spirituality of the avian species. The sight of birds makes people happy, relax, and hope for good things to come. However, just like dark and light, good and bad, heaven and hell, believing in one requires the belief in the other.

And so if you accept superstitions of good fortunes and success from the sight or dream of avians, then also trust in the other side of things. Are birds a sign of death? Yes they are, but only a few species are linked to the world of the deceased.

Sometimes, a bird symbolizes a passed loved one, someone who died very recently. And in other times, they appear in dreams as a warning.

And no matter how sad the circumstance is, a bird represents a lost loved one. In many ways, it comforts the hearts of the mourning family and friends. And for believers, they feel a slight happiness, knowing that their departed loved ones are sending messages from heaven.

List of Birds That Represent Death of Family

There is more than one bird that symbolizes death. They can appear in your sleep or in the real world. These avians are listed below.

bird-that-symbolizes-death

Just like the Caelid death bird, vultures have an appearance of death. They feed on dead animals and are always around death, so they symbolize the demise of a loved one. This representation often applies to a dream, but also real life when vultures find their way to your house.

When a human dies, this bird species can sense it, and they are said to visit the families of the dead. And it’s important to note that a vulture represents the dead, and they’re not an omen of an impending death.

And so when a vulture visits your dream in the middle of the night, it brings news of someone having passed away.

birds-that-represent-death

Similar to the bird of death monogatari, the cuckoos are thought of as a sign of death. This bird species can journey to the realm of the dead and still thrive in the human world. And so they are perfect for bringing messages from people in the afterlife to their families.

The beautiful cardinals represent lost loved ones. When a loved one dies, a cardinal comes near the grieving family, and for some reason, their presence may comfort the sad people. They bring hope to the families and assure them that there is still hope ahead.

This bird’s body is said to be occupied by the spirit of the dead. And receiving a message of love and hope from a departed loved one is definitely a comforting occurrence. So if you see a red bird meaning death, wave to send off your family to the underworld with peace.

In the bird of death mythology, robins are known to be associated with dearly departed family members and friends. They can access the spirit world and come to earth with the messages of dead people. Then they visit the humans who are supposed to be the recipients of the communication.

That’s why if a robin comes near you, then that signifies that a dead loved one is here to check on you. Robins are also a sign of wealth and success, so your departed family could be sending you a message of good fortune to come.

birds-associated-with-death

Black birds meaning death includes the crows. They represent a recent death in the family. And this symbolism occurs when a crow visits you in a dream or at your home.

black-birds-meaning-death

Raven, as a black bird symbol of death, has been depicted in many books, films, and poetry. This bird is known to be a messenger from the other world, so seeing one in real life or in dreamland means a loved one is trying to communicate with you.

Bats are birds associated with death, and the foreboding sense is always present when this bird species is around. If bats are seen during the day or in a dream, it might imply a sickness surrounding someone you love.

bird-represents-a-lost-loved-one

Myths depicted blackbirds as instruments of witchcraft and demonic activities. It is also a bird that represents death .

If a loved one just died, then seeing a sparrow is a good sign. This signifies that the souls of your departed kin or close friend will safely be carried to heaven.

Now you know what bird symbolizes death of a loved one. The ten birds we listed have always been associated with death. However, you can find comfort in birds that bring messages from your kin from the afterlife.

These creatures really are a world of fascinating symbols and beliefs . They might not actually have to mean something, but they can make us think, pondering about life and death.

The meaning of seeing birds after someone dies

Meaning of Seeing Birds After Someone Dies

When someone we love passes away, it can be a deeply unsettling and emotional experience. During this time, it is not uncommon for people to report seeing birds in the days and weeks following the death of a loved one.

Many people believe that these sightings are a sign from the deceased, a way for them to let their loved ones know that they are still with them in spirit.

The belief that seeing birds after someone dies is a sign of their presence is not new. In many cultures and traditions, birds are seen as spiritual beings, capable of carrying messages between the living and the dead.

In some cases, people believe that specific types of birds carry specific meanings. For example, some believe that seeing a cardinal after someone dies is a sign that the deceased is present and watching over their loved ones.

While the meaning of seeing birds after someone dies may vary from person to person, it is generally seen as a positive and uplifting experience. For many, it brings a sense of comfort and closure during a difficult time.

It is important to note that seeing birds after someone dies is a personal and subjective experience, and there is no one-size-fits-all explanation for it.

Some people may interpret seeing birds after someone dies as a sign of their loved one’s presence, while others may see them as a symbol of hope and renewal.

Ultimately, the meaning of seeing birds after someone dies is a deeply personal one, and it is up to each individual to interpret and understand it in their own way.

What bird symbolizes someone from heaven?

In many cultures and traditions, birds are seen as spiritual beings that can carry messages between the living and the deceased.

As such, seeing birds after someone dies is often associated with the presence of a loved one in heaven.

If you have experienced seeing a particular type of bird after a loved one passed away, it is natural to wonder what bird symbolizes someone from heaven.

1. Seeing a hawk

Seeing a hawk is a sign that you are being watched over by someone from heaven. This bird symbolism is related to protection and safety, as well as your connection to the divine.

You are loved and cared for, and you should take comfort in that knowledge!

The hawk is also associated with nobility and royalty, so that may be another reason why seeing one would indicate someone from heaven.

2. Seeing an owl

If you see an owl , it means that you are being visited by someone from heaven. This is a sacred bird, and its presence signifies that a message from the afterlife is reaching out to you.

The owl is associated with wisdom and knowledge, and it can help you to find peace during your time of grief. When you see an owl, it’s important to listen for the message that the bird has for you.

3. Seeing a woodpecker

Seeing a woodpecker is a sign that you are being watched over by someone from heaven. The woodpecker is a bird that taps on trees to find insects, which it then eats.

When you see this bird, it’s time to reflect on the life you’re living and be grateful for all the blessings in your life.

4. Seeing a cardinal

Cardinals are often seen as messengers from God or other spiritual beings, which can be taken as a sign that someone you love who has passed has sent you a message from beyond the grave.

If you see a cardinal, take it as an omen that someone you love is watching over you and wants to let you know they’re thinking about you.

In the Christian tradition, this bird symbolizes Christ’s presence in the world. The cardinal has been seen as a messenger of God and as a bearer of good news.

5. Seeing a bald eagle

Bald eagles have been known to symbolize someone from heaven since ancient times. In fact, one legend says that if you see a bald eagle up close, it’s actually an angel hiding its wings!

A bald eagle also symbolizes someone from heaven because it was used in Native American ceremonies to represent a messenger from the gods.

Seeing one can be a reminder that there are forces in this world greater than ourselves that are watching over us, protecting us, and guiding us toward our destiny.

6. Seeing a white dove

Some people think that seeing a white dove is more simply symbolic of receiving a message from a loved one or ancestor.

In this sense, the idea that the bird actually embodies the spirit of your deceased loved one is less common than the idea that the white dove is providing a reminder of your relationship by their synchronistic presence at that precise moment.

7. Seeing a robin

Seeing a robin is a sign that someone from heaven is thinking of you. Robins are known for their bright red breast and their cheerful chirping, which makes them easy to spot.

Robins are often seen in the spring and summer because they are migratory birds. If you see one in the winter, it could mean that someone is thinking about you during this time when it’s harder to be around people.

8. Seeing a raven

The raven is a messenger of magic and spiritual messages in Native American tradition. It is a message from people who have passed away, as well as from outer space, other universes, and the place where all began and will finish.

The dead raven itself is a communication from those other dimensions, according to their perception of the raven as a great spiritual force and connection transporter between dimensions.

9. Seeing a crow

A crow symbolizes the ability to find beauty in the mundane and transform it into something new and beautiful.

Crows are also known to be very social creatures and be able to recognize individual humans, which is why some people believe that crows come from heaven – they come down from the clouds to deliver messages from god.

10. Seeing a hummingbird

Hummingbirds teach and inform us that it’s acceptable to gaze back into our past and visit those cherished memories of deceased loved ones thanks to their ability to fly backward.

We also find out that remorse and guilt are unjustified. Hummingbirds serve out tasty nectar while hovering over flowers, teaching us to cherish each moment and show our loved ones how much they mean to us.

They serve as a reminder to look for the positive and the beauty in each day.

11. Seeing a red bird

After the loss of a loved one, individuals frequently report seeing a red bird . Many believe that these sightings provide an avenue for the deceased’s spirit to contact the living.

Some individuals think that animals, particularly birds, have a special bond with the afterlife and can act as intermediaries between the living and the dead.

Following the loss of a loved one, it is only natural for individuals to search for signs and symbols. Seeing a red bird may bring solace and a sense of connection to the deceased.

What are signs from a loved one who passed away?

What are signs from a loved one who passed away

Some people may experience a feeling of presence, a dream or vision, or a physical manifestation of their loved one’s presence.

Others may see specific symbols or objects that remind them of their loved one or experience synchronicities or coincidences that feel significant.

These are the most common questions about seeing birds after someone dies.

Owls, vultures, cats, bats, and crows are a few examples of animals often connected to death. Some of these animals eat carrion, while others are nocturnal. Vultures can symbolize both metamorphosis and renewal in addition to death.

I wondered if it was her/our daughter but why 2? It was such an emotional moment & I’ve seen & heard one before but never 2 in flight & in my presence until now..18mos later. I’ve not seen or heard them since this morning. Thank you for your post. Gratefully Melanie

My grandmother passed away a couple years ago. She was a very important person in my life. Her daughter, my mom passed away in 2003 I was only 19 my grandmother had always been like a mother to me both my parents weren’t that great at being parents n I had to run away at 14. My grandmother would let me come to her house at night to eat n shower things like that. Anyway I’m grown now n it was my grandmother’s time to pass. She was very scared n asked me to stay at her side till she passed n I did. She wanted her daughter to take over after she passed to handle her services. The morning she passed I left hospice to get a cup of coffee n to call other family members with the news. When I returned to hospice building there was some people around the front doors but no 1 was going in they were all looking at the ground as I got closer I noticed a small light colored pigeon, she was standing in middle of the doors as if waiting for the doors to open. I watched for a moment then had the urge to walk over n pick her up. A wild bird! But I did n she let me. Everyone couldn’t believe it. As I’m walking towards my grandmother’s room the bird suddenly flew out of my hands I’d been holding her a good 5-10 mins n into the reflections room. I had this knowing that my grandmother wasn’t dead or gone just no longer confined to her body. I don’t go to church nor did I grow up with religion in my family more like a lack of it. But being homeless since 14 till 18 I learned to follow my heart or gut it led me to safety in what couldve been very dangerous situations. I believe that it is God. I also believe the birds u seen was ur daughter letting u know she is safe n not alone. She is with other loved ones n she is watching over u.

I was on vacation in Florida after a couple days there a large blackbird in the morning that sat on the porch landing and began squawking non stop. He sat and looked at us about five feet away. The next morning I got a message that my best friend in Ohio passed away. He came back the following morning and continued to talk non stop. I then fed him and he flew away. I made plans to leave for the funeral. I will always remember this

I live in North Carolina. On January 15th 2015 at 5am I seen a red-bellied woodpecker sitting low on a tree at a friend’s house. We left their house then came back about 30 minutes later. The woodpecker was still on the tree. So I got out of my car and started walking towards it expecting it to fly away, but it didn’t. So I turned the flash on of my phone so I could see it better because it’s very dark out still. I got close enough to the bird that I could have reached out to grab it. I was shocked I had never seen a woodpecker out up close like that. So I took a picture of it because it was just a strange encounter for me. Well I turned to walk back to my car then the woodpecker flew off into the darkness. Well later on that day I learned that my big brother was murdered. He was 32 years old. I had to go to the sheriff’s office of the town he was murdered in and speak to the captain. She told me that the 911 call came in about 530am. It wasn’t until about a week later I was going through the photos on my phone when I found the picture of the bird so I looked at the time stamp and realized it was the day he was killed and at the same time roughly… I broke down because I knew in that moment that it was my brother saying goodbye to me… also we hadn’t been on speaking terms for about 3 years and it’s something I regret everyday of my life. I carry so much guilt for not making things right with him. Ohhh also I think it’s important to mention that our last name is [Byrd] so him coming to me as a bird really makes it more meaningful for me.

My father passed away in March but we didn’t come together to scatter his ashes until May. The family went to my Dad’s favorite beach and we did as he had requesting — committing his body to the water and the sand.

I sat down in the sand to have a cry. Two Canada geese appeared and waddled from the water to within touching distance…they then settled into the sand, tucked their heads under their wings and went to sleep.

I know,my Dad sent the geese.

My father passed away in my arms at 1:11am on July 31st, 2017. The following day I sat there asking “Dad, are you okay? Did you make it to the other side?”…In minutes a large owl began calling out to me. It was broad day light.. I opened my front door to see this beautiful bird perched on a low branch of a tree directly in front of my door. It was literally dancing, shaking its body and spreading its wings. Its feathers opened increasing its size enormously. Its wings spread completely opened in a lovely array. It finally cocked it’s head a couple times and took off soaring into the sky circling around and around… I was bathed in a tangible warmth and peace flowed over my entire body…I knew he was free.

I live in New York City. I want to share my two experiences with a butterfly and a bird.

In the summer of 2021, the day my parents were visiting me from South Korea, my beloved dog Toto died as the age of 15. I adopted Toto, a miniature Schnauzer, when he was 9 months old in 2006 and lived my life with him until around 2018. He’d seen my two kids since they were born and my kids had grown up with him. After going through a different divorce, and raising kids alone, it was getting hard for me to take care of him well specifically when he was getting old. I did my best to keep him well, while it was an extremely difficult situation. Because my kids were young, and I couldn’t afford a dog walker, I used to take him out at 3am to give him a walk. I still remember those days. Thankfully, my parents from South Korea took Toto to their house in South Korea and took care of him very well. On that day Toto had died, was the day they were visiting New York from South Korea. We knew he was getting old enough to leave this world but didn’t expect him to die that day. My sister in Korea was taking care of him. I thought to myself, maybe, maybe Toto was flying to New York with my parents.

My parents arrived in New York and heard from my sister that Toto died. My sister took care of his funeral – burn his body in a dog funeral place in South Korea. She kept Toto’s ash until my parents went back to Korea and spread them over his favorite park.

While my parents were in New York, we got into subway, as usual to go somewhere. Then there was a white butterfly in the very subway car we got on, in Manhattan, in July, where the white butterfly was from? It was such a strange scene, I lived in New York City since 2006, but never had seen a butterfly in a subway car. My parents thought it was strange but didn’t think much of it but I thought it might be Toto’s spirit, because the butterfly was landing on other people’s nose so they had to shoo it away, exactly how Toto was like when he was alive – he always went onto other people because of his overly friendly nature.

My dog of 13 years passed away a week ago. He was my constant companion and devoted to me, a grey shnautzer with a white face, white neck and jet black eyes. For the first time ever, as I parked my car in a familiar spot yesterday, a grey bird with a white face and white breast and black eyes landed on my rear view mirror, flapped his wings, and then stayed for less than a minute, looking at me and flew away. Long enough for me to take a few pictures. The next day, the exact same thing, same grey bird. I have been parking there for 30 years and never has a bird landed on my car. So I felt it was my dog, telling me he had crossed over to somewhere but was still with me in spirit. I’d like to think he was also telling me he will be there waiting for me…… when it’s my turn.

I have a couple of bird stories. The first was several years ago when my father in law passed. The night of the visitation a Carolina Wren was in our garage. We opened the garage door and let it out. I had a strange feeling about it. The next day the wren was back in our garage when we set out for the funeral. The next time I saw a Carolina wren was a couple months later on our screened in back porch around Christmas, staring at me through the window. I let it out. Then another time weeks later it came on back porch . I turned and took a few steps to grab my camera.. less than a minute..but it was gone when I went out on the porch. The last time one came into our porch was the day we dedicated a Bible to my father in law years later. Also My sister passed a year ago. A few days before she passed, my husband found a beautiful dead Cardinal on our front porch. I was saddened as that’s my favorite bird and my sister was in the hospital and we were not certain if the cancer returned.. she passed quickly. At the gravesite a Mockingbird perched on a nearby headstone right in front of me…and it is the Mockingbird that crosses my path every day since then. So I know of what I believe are signs sent from God’s angels and I have experienced many.

I love in Spain, Catalunya. My first sighting of a bird of Prey was when we were driving out to view a place of service for my late father. I felt it was a sign then the place was right. Then on my birthday driving to work nearly one year after his passing a bird of prey rose with in meters to the side of my car…I instantly thought it´s my birthday present to know you are thinking of me. Since then, I have had various encounters of seeing a bird of prey always on my way to work. Finally, today was my last sighting when I was thinking of people who have passed away then suddenly a bird of prey started to actually show off…showing me its wings letting me look at it then flew off. I associate these sightings now that my angeles or loved ones are close by.

what bird means visit from heaven

In the spring of 2018 we had a Sandhill Crane visit my parents house daily, sometimes multiple times in a day to hang out with my parents on their lanai. They had a big beautiful lake behind their house and the crane would go back and forth from the lanai to the lake. I would see the crane when I visited on the weekends and she was so friendly, she almost seemed tame. The Sandhill Crane left after a few months.

A year later, in the spring of 2019, the same Sandhill Crane returned – this time with her little baby crane and her “husband” crane and they again visited my parents quite often when they were out in their lanai and would hang out for a couple hours each day. I would again see the crane and her family when I visited on the weekends. After a few months they left again. They returned once again, a year later in spring 2020, with another baby crane – again visiting my parents (and me) often. After a few months, they left again, only they didn’t return the following spring, or the spring after that. My mom and I spoke of the Sandhill Crane often and wondered if she would ever return.

My mom passed away in the spring of 2023 (March), and then my dad passed away a month later in April – I was with him at home as he passed under the care of Hospice. At the very moment when my dad passed, I heard a very loud squawking sound outside. I looked out the sliding glass doors that leads to the lanai, and I saw our Sandhill Crane – whom we haven’t seen in 3 years. She was right outside our lanai, so close that I could pet her, looking into our house through the glass doors and screaming to get our attention (my brother and his wife were there too). When I went outside to see her, she walked towards me and I felt my mom’s presence. I knew at that very moment that my mom had sent the crane to comfort me and to let me know she was there to get my dad, and that they were ok and back together again – they had been married for 53 wonderful years – and now will spend eternity together.

I will cherish this experience for the rest of my life and I take great comfort knowing that my parents spirit and soul lives on and that we will be together again in God’s house. Thank you God, and mom, for sending our crane as a sign of your love for us.

My wife died in February 2023 after 30 years of marriage and 5 children .when she died I asked all kids of questions like why her .? Why not me? So I had a dream on night I didn’t see her but I asked her all sorts of questions for closure . I kept asking in march . And I asked in April . The beginning of April I’m asking the questions in my head and hear all the same answers so I ask her for a sign as I went walking in the house I open the door and go in and a bird flew from inside my house right by me and right outside. Next week I ask again , that morning I go to the gym walk inside and a bird flew at me from inside the gym I opened the door and out he flew . Ok so if that’s not enough I ask again next week in the morning , we’ll that night I went down stairs to see what was making noise in the kitchen I’m the only one in the house and there is a bird banging against my kitchen window trying to get out of the house so I open the kitchen door walk toward the bird and out he flew . My daughter said you are well aware that has to be mommy . So am I crazy seeing this or am I truly lucky to have such a wonderful wife to reach out to me . Sincerely Al from Virginia

I am deeply sorry to hear about the passing of your beloved wife. Please know that my heart goes out to you during this difficult time. However, I do believe that this message could be a sign from your wife, letting you know that she is still with you in spirit and watching over you. Please take comfort in the thought that she will always be with you in some way.

My best friend passed last week. I am devastated and still grieving. My absolute favourite bird in New Zealand is our native fantail. I adore them. I have been talking to my friend and asking for a sign. Today on was on the phone and caught something out of the corner of my eye. A fantail fluttered by and then perched on the lampshade. I got up and we looked at each other for a few moments and then it flew straight our the door. I know it was my best friend.

My brother in law passed away April 17, 2023. This has been a very difficult time for us as my husband s family has always been very close and united. This past week as I sat in my car one day during my lunch , I noticed a bird almost went through the open passenger door window. When I noticed, I closed the window. A few minutes later the same bird returned and stood on side mirror and then flew away. A few minutes after that the bird returned to side mirror while it flew back and forth from mirror to door , as it knocked on glass with its beak continuously for about a minute or two and then it flew away. This made me wonder if it was my brother in law trying to give me a message.

I’m from Poland. My cat Tosia was my best friend. I took her when she was 2 months old. I treated her like my child. She was killed by a car on Thursday night. Since Friday I noticed that blackbird/or blackbirds are extremely noisy. I also noticed them behind the window of my room. I was ignoring it. Finally yesterday I decided to check on this blackbird because i thought he/she was hurt. It was female blackbird who came to me and was sitting for a minute and looking into my eyes. I thought she was hurt i tried to touch her but she walked/flew away to the direction of my cats favourite place. Since that time it’s silent and this bird is gone. I’m sure it was Tosia trying to say goodbye.

My father passed away early this morning. After hours of sitting downstairs with my mom and uncle and his wife trying to make funeral arrangements, I finally went up to my room to lay down as his body was being transported out of the house. A couple minutes later a bird flew in through window which wasn’t even half open. I normally have this window wide open with no issues, and right as they are transporting his body out a bird flies in. It freaked me out and I screamed until my sister caught it and left my room with it, but I’m sure it was my dad. I hope he comes back so I can have another chance to talk to him more calmly next time 💚

I believe my mom passed a week before her body did. My mom took turn for worse and went back to hospital where they gave her wrong meds and she became in state of constant seizures and never was conscious again. I was on a trip to Egypt with my son when this happened and we had just returned from watching sunrise at top of Mount Sinai. When we got back to air Bnb a bird was inside our place flying around. I knew it was related to my mom. I spoke to my daughter back home and my mom was still alive yet when I returned to hospital she was still alive but I knew she wasn’t there we let her die but I feel she passed before her body did. When I shifted her once on bed her eyes opened and it wasn’t her it was scary she was not in there. I feel she really left her body early and that was when bird came.

My husband of 14 years passed away 2 months & 4 days ago. Due to a combination of circumstances I recently moved back in with my mom, into the home I originally grew up in. I often sit on her large patio out front. There is an 8′ fence that divides her yard from the neighbors yard. There has been a sparrow that constantly sits on the fence no matter what time of day it is. Out of the blue 3 days ago I just up and decided to get a tattoo. I never had one before and I never thought about getting one, but for whatever reason I found myself at a tattoo shop. Not knowing what I wanted, where I wanted it placed or what size, the kind tattoo artist asked me a series of questions. He tattooed, in black ink only, a two inch tattoo on my shoulder, with the word “Integrity” along with my husbands initials. Since the moment he finished I’ve been completely at peace and often smile for no reason at all when I’m alone. My understanding is that birds are a sign from heaven signifying hope & peace. As of today there has been no sign of that little sparrow and that’s okay. I guess his job with me is done and he’s moving on 🙂

My sister passed away last week. We were very close and she promised that she would watch over me after her death. Several days later, I was playing tennis and a bald eagle circled over the tennis court! I have never seen an eagle in this area and everyone present said it was their first time ever seeing a bald eagle that wasn’t in captivity. My sister found great joy in nature and wildlife and especially osprey, owls, and eagles. I feel so blessed to have witnessed this sign from the afterlife.

My son passed away last June from cancer. He lived with me and I miss him a lot. Before he passed, I asked him to give me a sign that he was ok and as he loved our backyard birds , I watched for something from them. Finally, yesterday, on Thanksgiving, I saw a big hawk perched on the fence 15 feet away. He looked around and sat for a long time as if wanting to make sure I saw him then flew away. I’m sure it was him giving me his sign. We live in the suburbs and this was the first time I had ever seen a hawk. I feel comforted that my son is ok.

Birds Messengers of the Dead

Sometimes, a bird symbolizes a passed loved one, someone who died very recently. And in other times, they appear in dreams as a warning. And no matter how sad the circumstance is, a bird represents a lost loved one. In many ways, it comforts the hearts of the mourning family and friends. And for believers, they feel a slight happiness, knowing that their departed loved ones are sending messages from heaven.

List of Birds That Represent Death of Family

There is more than one bird that symbolizes death. They can appear in your sleep or in the real world. These avians are listed below.

Bird #1: Vultures

Just like the Caelid death bird, vultures have an appearance of death. They feed on dead animals and are always around death, so they symbolize the demise of a loved one. This representation often applies to a dream, but also real life when vultures find their way to your house. When a human dies, this bird species can sense it, and they are said to visit the families of the dead. And it’s important to note that a vulture represents the dead, and they’re not an omen of an impending death. And so when a vulture visits your dream in the middle of the night, it brings news of someone having passed away.

Bird #2: Cuckoo

Similar to the bird of death monogatari, the cuckoos are thought of as a sign of death. This bird species can journey to the realm of the dead and still thrive in the human world. And so they are perfect for bringing messages from people in the afterlife to their families.

Bird #3: Cardinals

The beautiful cardinals represent lost loved ones. When a loved one dies, a cardinal comes near the grieving family, and for some reason, their presence may comfort the sad people. They bring hope to the families and assure them that there is still hope ahead. This bird’s body is said to be occupied by the spirit of the dead. And receiving a message of love and hope from a departed loved one is definitely a comforting occurrence. So if you see a red bird meaning death, wave to send off your family to the underworld with peace.

Bird #4: Robin

In the bird of death mythology, robins are known to be associated with dearly departed family members and friends. They can access the spirit world and come to earth with the messages of dead people. Then they visit the humans who are supposed to be the recipients of the communication. That’s why if a robin comes near you, then that signifies that a dead loved one is here to check on you. Robins are also a sign of wealth and success, so your departed family could be sending you a message of good fortune to come.

Bird #5: Crow

Black birds meaning death includes the crows. They represent a recent death in the family. And this symbolism occurs when a crow visits you in a dream or at your home.

Bird #6: Ravens

Raven, as a black bird symbol of death, has been depicted in many books, films, and poetry. This bird is known to be a messenger from the other world, so seeing one in real life or in dreamland means a loved one is trying to communicate with you.

Bird #7: Bats

Bats are birds associated with death, and the foreboding sense is always present when this bird species is around. If bats are seen during the day or in a dream, it might imply a sickness surrounding someone you love.

Bird #8: Blackbird

Myths depicted blackbirds as instruments of witchcraft and demonic activities. It is also a bird that represents death.

Bird #9: Sparrow

If a loved one just died, then seeing a sparrow is a good sign. This signifies that the souls of your departed kin or close friend will safely be carried to heaven.
