Rail route of the month: gliding past Finland’s pristine forests and lakes
Our slow travel expert explores Finland’s borderlands with Russia as she embarks on a 300-mile journey from Helsinki to North Karelia
T he monumental facade of Helsinki’s main railway station has an elegant symmetry. Four giant, granite men, each one holding a lantern, are there to greet me. It is before seven on a quiet Saturday morning and I am here on an eastbound mission, heading for the only passenger railway in the European Union to cross the 30th meridian east of Greenwich.
From its train number, Finland’s IC1 service sounds as though it should be the most prestigious train in the country, just as 50 years ago the number TEE 1 was reserved for the premium Trans-Europe Express which dashed nonstop from Paris to Bordeaux. Finland’s IC1 doesn’t dash anywhere, averaging just over 60 mph on the 300-mile journey through lakes and forests to Joensuu, the administrative centre of the region which Finns know as Pohjois-Karjala (North Karelia). From Joensuu, it is another 100 miles and two hours on a local train to Nurmes, passing through gorgeous North Karelian countryside and crossing the 30th meridian along the way.
Border markers
The Intercity train from Helsinki to Joensuu is nearly empty. What’s striking is the innovative interior design of the six-carriage, double-decker train. There’s a children’s play area, complete with slide, in one carriage, designated space for pets at the end of the train and elsewhere a choice of private compartments for two or four people (which can also be booked with a supplement by solo travellers), and some airy, open-plan carriages. I head for the restaurant car and a simple breakfast of oatmeal porridge with berries, accompanied by orange juice and coffee (all for €7.90).
Now we are slipping out of Helsinki, passing sidings on the left where a couple of Allegro trains look very smart in the morning sunshine. Until late March, these sleek high-speed trains were used on the regular run to St Petersburg. The service was axed in protest at Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. While the trains ran, St Petersburg was just three-and-a-half hours in Allegro comfort from Helsinki. Now the Russian city seems light years away.
The IC1 from Helsinki to Joensuu runs close to the Russian border; at one point we cross the eastern arm of Lake Simpele, passing within half a mile of the frontier. For Finns, the eastern territories ceded to Russia in the second world war have been the subject of much myth-making, with stories of an idealised Karelian past which so inspired Finnish music, song, art and literature in the 19th century. The reality of life on the other side of the border is less romantic. “See those dark clouds?” asks the train manager pointing to the east. “That’s pollution from the Russian pulp mills at Enso,” he says, emphatically using the former Finnish name for the Russian community that is now called Svetogorsk.
Karelian identity
There is an increasingly Russian feel to the landscape as the IC1 heads deeper into Finnish Karelia. There are Orthodox churches aplenty, easily identifiable by their distinctive cross, and many timber houses-cum-barns combined into very large two-storey buildings. The train’s pace slows as we cruise up the east shore of Pyhäselkä and enter Joensuu. It’s the end of the line for the IC1, and here those bound for rural outposts further north must change to a Czech-built railcar for the onward journey. Within a dozen minutes of arriving in Joensuu, we are on our way north, rattling over a white girder bridge that spans the fast-flowing Pielisjoki.
About 15 minutes later, we cross the 30th meridian east of Greenwich – the first of four occasions when our train passes that line of longitude. The easternmost railway station on the line (and thus anywhere in the European Union) is at Uimaharju, a village that lies as far east as St Petersburg. Uimaharju enjoys a fine lakeshore setting, slightly marred by a cluster of pulp mills and saw mills. Here, an Orthodox priest joins the train. We chat and he explains that Orthodoxy may be a mark of the east, but it’s not necessarily Russian. “The Finnish Orthodox Church is an official state church here in Finland,” he says, breaking off to point out a tiny wooden chapel capped by an Orthodox cross, in the forest by the railway. “That’s what we call a tsasouna ,” he says.
The last 90 minutes of the journey, from Uimaharju up to Nurmes, is the finest part of the entire ride from Helsinki. When this line was built, the Grand Duchy of Finland was part of the Russian Empire, and there are moments when I feel transported back in time to the rural Russia of tsarist times. By now, the green-and-white diesel railcar has emptied out. We slip by clearings in the forest where rye and potatoes are grown, past Karelian-style wooden houses and some very fine wooden churches. This is a journey into another world, one that all too soon reaches Nurmes. On the approach to the town, we pass a huge farmstead which had been painstakingly moved, log-by-log, from its original location on the Russian side of the border. It’s a nice example of how Finland has “recreated” elements of Karelian culture and identity within its constrained, postwar borders.
Nurmes is a lovely wee township that is gearing up to mark the 150th anniversary of its founding by Tsar Alexander II in 2023. This rural community, perched on a narrow peninsula jutting into the northernmost part of Lake Pielinen, is a perfect spot to spend a day or two. While it is just possible to make a day trip from Helsinki to Nurmes and back, a round trip of more than 16 hours, the better choice is to stay overnight and then continue on by bus. The two main options are to head north-west through the Karelian forests to Kajaani or south-west to Kuopio, both well-placed on Finland’s mainline rail network. Both bus routes run once daily (except Saturdays), with a journey time of about two hours.
Travel notes
The IC1 leaves Helsinki daily except Sundays at 6.57am. With a change in Joensuu, arrival in Nurmes is at 2pm. The return service leaves Nurmes at 3.40pm, giving arrival in Helsinki at 11.03pm. Interrail passes are valid throughout without any supplements.
One-way tickets in standard class (called Eco in Finland) from Helsinki to Nurmes if booked well in advance start at €25.60, but may be more than twice that if booked just prior to travel. The supplement to upgrade to first class is always €17.90. Fees for private compartments vary with how many people are travelling. Book tickets online at VR Finnish Railways .
Tickets for onward bus journeys from the railhead at Nurmes can be booked on the Matkahuolto app or website . The single fares from Nurmes to Kuopio and Kajaani are €21.80 and €25.80 respectively.

Morning at leisure, before departing for todays highlight, a husky safari. A 2.5-hour program with 2.5-mile husky cart tour or 45-minute reindeer sleigh tour.
Huskies are not born fit, it takes lots of preparation and conditioning before the dogs are as fit as they can be. Visit the kennel and get a feel for how the dogs are prepared to be the amazing athletes they are. Our enthusiastic dogs will happily take you down the forest trail for an unforgettable experience.
Afterwards there will be time to mingle with the dogs, have a snack with juice and cookies around the fire. For the animal welfare reasons, we offer this husky cart tour only, when the temperature is 50 degrees Fahrenheit or colder. When there is enough snow to use sleds the program changes into 45-minute safari with a sled. The schedule of the program will stay the same, either 2.5 miles with a cart or 45 minutes with the sled depending on the snow situation.
Santa and Reindeers
Departure from hotel in Rovaniemi and travel a short distance outside of Rovaniemi, stopping at Santa Claus Village, where there is free entrance and to explore this unique attraction.
A stop is made en-route at the small town of Sodankylä, and at the Sodankylä Old Church. A short outside viewing is included before continuing to Saariselka.
Spend a magical night in a private Aurora Cabin/Glass Igloo, where you have the chance to witness the Northern Lights from your very own bed. The hotel is on the outskirts of the small village of Saariselka, and is well away from any light pollution and so is a great place for witnessing the Northern Lights (weather permitting).
Enjoy an evening Reindeer Safari, with the chance of experiencing the Northern Lights. A short transfer to a local Reindeer farm and here you have the opportunity to get to know a local Sami family. During your visit, we will feed the reindeer in the paddock and tell you about reindeer husbandry. Then it’s time to take the Lappish lasso and practice, with the guidance of the host, throwing the lasso. You will also have a peek into the dim Lappish hut. In the idyllic old cottage, you can enjoy some coffee and chat more about reindeer and Sámi. You can explore the sky outdoors or sit in the warm hut and listen to us tell you about the reindeer. Weather permitting (Only December – March) you will also enjoy a reindeer sleigh ride (approx. 25-45 min)
Sámi History and Huskies
Depart Saariselka this morning and continue North through Finnish Lapland.
After about an hour, you will reach the small township of Inari, where entrance is included to the SIIDA Museum.
The Sámi Museum, SIIDA, is the national museum of the Sámi and a national special museum in Finland. The Sámi Museum stores the spiritual and material culture of the Finnish Sámi in its collections and presents it to the public through its exhibitions and publications. Its main purpose is to support the identity and the cultural self-esteem of the Sámi.
Departure from Inari and continue North, before crossing the border and later, arriving into Kirkenes, and the Snowhotel.
Your Hurtigruten Coastal Express Voyage Starts
Your voyage onboard the Coastal Express begins in the Arctic in the town of Kirkenes. Our first port of call is Vardø and its iconic star-shaped Vardøhus Fortress, built-in 1737. The northernmost fortification of any kind, it remains a part of the military to this day. Weather permitting, brave swimmers may want to take a dip in the icy Arctic Ocean (strictly optional of course!).
We cruise Norway’s coastline to arrive in the small port of Båtsfjord in the evening and then on to Berlevåg . You might be able to make out Mount Tanahorn to the west, or see Kjølnes Lighthouse blinking atop a cliff overlooking the Barents Sea. These two idyllic ports are home to Norway’s most famous male choir, comprising local fishermen.
Unmatched Arctic Scenery
We make a late-night stop at Mehamn , where there is the option to join snowmobile trip through the vast Arctic wilderness. A great opportunity to experience snowy plains and valleys, crisp winter air under the Northern Lights in the starry sky above.
During the day we pass through various ports including Honningsvåg and Hammerfest where you can visit the UNESCO-listed Meridian Column, erected in 1854 to honor the first precise geographic measurement of the globe.
Late in the evening, we arrive at Tromsø , in time to enjoy a magical Northern Lights concert at the Arctic Cathedral in winter (optional).
Lofoten, Where Nature Amazes
This morning, we arrive at Harstad, where you can join one of our optional classic excursions - A Taste of Vesterålen . Discover the history, beautiful scenery, and cultural heritage sites of this iconic and breathtaking landscape. Those who stay on the ship experience our passage through the Risøyrenna , a shallow channel built for Hurtigruten in the 1920s.
Prepare for some amazing scenery as we sail through the world-famous islands of Lofoten and Vesterålen . Lofoten is known for its natural beauty, steep mountains, wilderness and picturesque fishing villages. After a short stop at the tiny village of Risøyhamn, we continue to Stokmarknes, where Hurtigruten began more than 125 years ago.
Continuing south, it will look like we’re headed straight into a mountain, but don’t worry, we are in fact sailing through a passage into the narrow Raftsund, flanked by peaks rising 1000m out of the sea. If that wasn't enough, we arrive at the amazing Trollfjord . If conditions allow, we will sail between sheer cliffs that seem close enough to reach out and touch. It’s an unforgettable experience!
Cross the Arctic Circle
We then cross over the Arctic Circle just after breakfast. Commemorate the moment with a tradition of tasting a spoonful of good ol’ cod liver oil!
Sailing along the Helgeland coast , you see the strange mountain, Torghatten, famous for the distinctive hole through its center. There is a local legend as to why and how this mountain came to have such a hole. Make sure you ask your Coastal Expert about it!
Another highlight is sailing past the Seven Sisters mountain range. It is easy to see how the peaks influenced ancient legends. The story goes that seven beautiful troll sisters were caught out at sunrise and turned to stone, thus creating the seven beautiful mountaintops.
Even though we’re south of the Arctic Circle, there may still be good opportunities to see the Northern Lights.
Rich History and Living Culture
Today you have a chance to explore the wooden city of history: Trondheim . Be sure to visit the majestic Nidaros Cathedral, built over the burial site of King Olav II who reigned from 1015 to 1028. Treat yourself to quality coffee and a Nordic patisserie in one of the Bakklandet district’s many chic cafés then walk up to Kristiansten Fort for great views of Norway’s third-largest city.
As we sail along the coast, you will realize the importance of fishing to Norway’s coastal communities. Kristiansund is regarded as Norway’s ‘dried cod capital’ because of its long-time export of salted dry fish. An interesting excursion is to the Bergtatt marble mine, which takes you inside a mountain and across an illuminated subterranean lake before serving you a meal in the mine´s ‘Grand Hall’.
A Fjord Farewell
During the night, the ship calls at Ålesund , Torvik and Målø y, as our voyage draws to a close. Before docking in Bergen, there is fascinating scenery to experience, including picturesque Nordfjord beneath Jostedal Glacier.
A few nautical miles south of Florø , we cross the mouth of the mighty Sognefjord, taking in superb views of the magnificent island-studded coastline en route. In the early afternoon, we arrive in the Hanseatic city of Bergen where our time on the Coastal Express comes to an end. After disembarkation we join our private coach for a city tour including a walking tour of the UNESCO World Heritage listed Bryggen, St Mary’s Church, and Håkon’s Hall, before heading to Troldhaugen, the home of Norway’s most famous composer, Edvard Grieg. After arrival at the hotel the evening is yours to enjoy and explore this vibrant city. One recommendation is to take the Fløibanen funicular to the top of nearby Mount Fløyen to enjoy views of Bergen and the surrounding mountains.
Norway in a Nutshell
Today enjoy an amazing journey by rail, coach and ferry on the famous ‘Norway in a Nutshell’ route between Bergen and Oslo. We start with a rail journey from Bergen to Voss, from here we travel by coach to Gudvangen - where Waterfalls line the road as we weave our way through the valley.
In Gudvangen board a ferry and enjoy a fjord cruise along the narrow and dramatic UNESCO protected Nærøyfjord, ending in the quaint village of Flåm. As we climb three thousand feet to the mountain train station of Myrdal, you will understand why this is considered one of the world’s most scenic rail journeys. From here we continue south to our final stop in Oslo.
Sightseeing in Oslo
Enjoy breakfast in the hotel and prepare for our final full day on tour.
On our coach tour learn more about this vibrant European city, as we journey through the history of Oslo, from the world's largest sculpture park by a single artist - Vigeland Sculpture Park to the site of the 1952 Winter Olympics and the Holmenkollen Ski Jump.
The afternoon is your to continue exploring before joining your fellow travelers and tour escort for our final farewell dinner in a local restaurant.
Your adventure ends
It is in the morning that we say goodbye as this exciting arctic adventure comes to an end. Depart the hotel with lifelong memories of your time in Norway and Finland under the dancing skies of the Northern Lights.
We have several ships in the fleet that we travel with.
MS Polarlys
Polarlys is Norwegian for `polar light´, and refers to the natural Arctic phenomenon we pursue in winter.
MS Richard With
MS Richard With proudly carries the name of Hurtigruten's founder.
MS Kong Harald
Norway’s reigning monarch, a seasoned sailor, lends his name to this remarkable hybrid vessel.

World’s Most SCENIC Train Journeys That Don’t Cost the Earth

Christchurch to Greymouth, New Zealand
Taking in some of New Zealand's most dramatic landscapes, the TranzAlpine route from Christchurch to Greymouth travels through some of the most incredible sights on the South Island. The train crosses Canterbury Plains and travels alongside the Waimakariri River before ascending into the mountains where it crosses the Staircase Viaduct. One-way fares start from $117 and all the seats line up with the huge panoramic windows and roof skylights.
Glasgow to Mallaig, Scotland, UK
Dubbed Britain's most scenic train route, the West Highland Line runs from the Scottish city of Glasgow to Fort William before continuing its journey towards the port of Mallaig. The journey traverses the Scottish Highlands' epic landscape and passes through the remote wilderness of Rannoch Moor. After a brief stop in Fort William, the train crosses the Glenfinnan Viaduct – the same bridge the Hogwarts Express crosses in the Harry Potter films.
For an even more authentic Harry Potter experience, there's The Jacobite steam train – it's the one used in the films. This year the train is scheduled to run Monday to Friday from early April to late October between Fort William and Mallaig. A standard adult return ticket costs $69. Otherwise, regular ScotRail trains between Glasgow and Mallaig run every day and a one-way off-peak fare is around $35.
San Luis Obispo to San Diego, California, USA
Stretching along the Pacific coastline, Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner connects the southern Californian cities of San Luis Obispo and San Diego. It's a comfortable 351-mile (565km) journey taking in stunning ocean views, beaches, rocky coast and quaint towns along the way. The train stops in places like Santa Barbara, Anaheim and Los Angeles along the way so if you have time, you can hop off and explore.
One-way fares start from around $70 and the full journey takes just over eight hours. Normally, the route offers 13 daily round-trip services between San Diego and Los Angeles, five to Santa Barbara and two to San Luis Obispo so travelers can be flexible with their itinerary, but do check the website for the latest timetables and service updates.

Flåm to Myrdal, Norway
Often described as one of the most beautiful train rides in the world, this journey is just under two hours and takes in some of the most beautiful scenery Norway has to offer. The Flåm Railway travels from sea level at the Sognefjord in Flåm to the Myrdal mountain station, 2,841 feet (866m) above sea level.
Williams to Grand Canyon Village, Arizona, USA
The trip on the Grand Canyon Railway begins in Williams, a small town 30 miles (48km) west of Flagstaff. Meandering its way through ponderosa pine forests and open prairie, the train terminates in Grand Canyon Village on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park before heading back to Williams. On the way, passengers are encouraged to get into the spirit of the Old West and enjoy the musical entertainment, cowboy characters and other surprises.
One-way fares start from $67 for a traditional Pullman Class seat up to $226 for a spot in the luxury dome car which has a private bar service and incredible views. Pick the luxury parlor and you'll be able to step out on the rear platform to see the changing landscape from a different perspective.
Cairns to Kuranda, Queensland, Australia
The two-hour journey on the Kuranda Scenic Railway begins in Cairns and takes visitors through one of the world's oldest rainforests. The tropical scenery takes in waterfalls, mountains and ravines as well as one of Queensland's most popular national parks, Barron Gorge. In Kuranda, visitors can tour the historic train station which is more than 100 years-old, plus a reptile park and a butterfly sanctuary.
In pictures: The world's most beautiful train stations
Return fares start from $51 for adults and $25 for children. Many opt to take the railway to Kuranda and get the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway back, to experience the World Heritage-listed Wet Tropics of Queensland from a different angle. A combined rail and cableway ticket costs $79 for adults and $42 for children.
Dar es Salaam to Kapiri Mposhi, Tanzania and Zambia
The TAZARA (Tanzania & Zambia Railway Authority) route is a great way of experiencing a safari without splashing out. The train travels from Dar es Salaam in Tanzania to the Zambian town of Kapiri Mposhi through the Selous game reserve, offering a chance to spot elephants, lions, giraffes and more. The journey covers 1,150 miles (1,852km) and takes just under 48 hours to complete.
Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi, Vietnam
When traveling on The Reunification Express line (also known as the North-South Railway) you don't have to choose between seeing historic cities, charming towns and spectacular coastline – this journey has it all. Traversing more than a thousand miles between Hanoi in the north and Ho Chi Minh City in the south, the route is one of Asia's most popular train rides. The full journey takes over two days but you can hop on and off at destinations like Hue and Da Nang.
Creel to Los Mochis, Mexico
The Chepe Express , running from the coastal city of Los Mochis in northern Sinaloa to Creel in Chihuahua, is easily one of the most picturesque train journeys you could take without blowing the budget. Throughout the nine-hour trip, the train goes through 86 tunnels and crosses 37 bridges, and traverses the epic canyons of the Sierra Tarahumara, including the Copper Canyon.
Winnipeg to Churchill, Manitoba, Canada
Part of VIA Rail Canada's Adventure Routes, the Winnipeg to Churchill route (formerly known as the Hudson Bay and before that the Northern Spirits) is the only dry land connection to Churchill from the rest of Canada. The journey stretches 1,054 miles (1,697km) and takes more than two days to complete.
As the train edges its way closer to Churchill, passengers have the chance to spot unparalleled northern landscapes and maybe even a polar bear or two. Travelers can choose between economy class or sleeper plus, which includes meals throughout the trip. One-way fares start from around $181.
Lima to Huancayo, Peru
The trip takes 14 hours to complete and travels through the Nor Yauyos-Cochas Landscape Reserve, one of Peru's most important protected areas with breathtaking landscapes. Those keen to travel should plan the trip carefully as the trains only run eight to nine times a year between April and November. One-way fares start around $132.
Johannesburg to Cape Town, South Africa
The Blue Train running from Pretoria to Cape Town is one of the most luxurious train journeys in the world with an eye-watering price tag to match. However, there is a much cheaper alternative. Starting from Johannesburg, passengers on this train enjoy the exact same views as those on the Blue Train – the Karoo desert, Hex River Pass, Cape wine region (pictured) and Table Mountain – for a fraction of the price.
The Shosholoza Meyl train, with sleeping cars and a restaurant, offers one-way fares starting at around $40. The other option is on the train's Premier Classe which has private sleepers, all meals included and a lounge-bar car. With prices at around $228 for a one-way ticket, it's still a lot more affordable than the Blue Train and offers a very similar experience.
These are the world’s most luxurious train journeys
Mettupalayam to Udagamandalam, Tamil Nadu, India
India's only rack railway, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway from Mettupalayam to Udagamandalam is part of the UNESCO-listed Mountain Railways of India but a one-way ride in sleeper class won't cost you more than $2.40. The train climbs the mountain rather sharply – it has the steepest track in Asia with a maximum gradient of 8.33%. The route takes exactly 290 minutes to go uphill, yet the return journey is 75 minutes shorter.
The route is 28.5 miles (46km) long and passes through many tunnels and over hundreds of bridges. The surrounding scenery includes rocky terrain, ravines, tea plantations and forested hills. The best views are between Mettupalayam and Coonoor, which is famous for its teas.
Take a look at these abandoned train stations around the world
Zermatt to St. Moritz, Switzerland
Connecting two of Switzerland's mountain resorts, the Glacier Express is a brilliant way of seeing some of the most beautiful views in the Swiss Alps. The scenic route takes in sights like Oberalp Pass, the highest point of the journey, and the Landwasser Viaduct (pictured) – a six-arch bridge which stands at 213 feet (65m) and plunges straight into a tunnel that leads through the mountain. The day-long trip covers 91 tunnels, 291 bridges and offers the chance to take in stunning alpine meadows, mountain lakes and chalets.
Zermatt to St Moritz, Switzerland
Although you might expect to have to pay dearly for such a stunning train ride, the journey will only set you back around $166 for a one-way, second-class ticket. You can choose to pay a $53 supplement for a three-course lunch or you're free to bring your own food, drink and even a bottle of wine on board. There is a food service car and staff come down the train taking orders. The panoramic coaches were specially built for the service in 2006.
