World Padel Tour (WPT), the world’s leading professional padel circuit, Abu Dhabi Sports Council , Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism , and property developer Modon today announced Abu Dhabi as the host city for the first-ever Abu Dhabi Padel Master tournament .

The event has drawn 128 of the world’s top-ranked padel players at the Modon Abu Dhabi Padel Master from 21-26 February 2023 at Bab Al Nojoum on Hudayriat Island . 

The Modon Abu Dhabi Padel Master 2023, which will be organised by Global MICE Organisation Limited (GMOL Events) and presented by the Abu Dhabi Sports Council in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism, will be the only master category tournament hosted by the World Padel Tour in the Middle East for the next five years.

The announcement was made at a press conference held in the presence of H.E. Aref Hamad Al Awani, General Secretary of Abu Dhabi Sports Council; H.E. Saleh Mohamed Saleh Al Geziry, Director General for Tourism at the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism; H.E. Saeed Ali Obaid Al Fazari, Strategic Affairs Executive Director at the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism; Bill O’Regan, CEO of Modon Properties; and Namir Hourani, Managing Director of GMOL Events. Alex Corretja, Deputy President of the World Padel Tour and former professional tennis champion, delivered a virtual keynote speech highlighting the importance of the World Padel Tour coming to Abu Dhabi.

H.E. Awani said: “We are delighted to announce Abu Dhabi as the host of the World Padel Tour Master tournament and invite everyone to the UAE’s capital to witness the world’s best players compete on Hudayriat Island, reaffirming Abu Dhabi’s ability to host top-notch international sporting events. Padel continues to gain major traction in the UAE with scores of new world-class facilities enhancing grassroots adoption and interest in the sport.”

H.E Al Geziry added: “Padel Tennis has become one of the most sought-after racquet sports events, earning a prestigious place in the international sporting calendar. We are pleased to host 128 of the world’s top male and female players in Abu Dhabi to compete on Hudayriyait Island, and we look forward to welcoming local and international visitors to the UAE’s Capital to enjoy the tournament and what the city has to offer.”

The Modon Abu Dhabi Padel Master 2023 will be the first Master tournament in the 2023 WPT season and marks one of only a handful of annual Master tournaments held around the world. Abu Dhabi joins Barcelona, Buenos Aires, Marbella, Valladolid, and Madrid as the latest city to host a WPT Master, the most prestigious tournament on the WPT circuit.

Delivering a virtual address, Corretja said: “We are excited to anchor a new Master tournament in Abu Dhabi, which has positioned itself as a world-class destination for leisure and sports entertainment with high-quality facilities and great infrastructure. This will not only be WPT’s first Master tournament of the 2023 season, but it will also be the only Master to be held in the Middle East, leveraging on the major boom the sport continues to witness in the UAE.”

The Modon Abu Dhabi Padel Master 2023 will take place at Bab Al Nojoum, Abu Dhabi’s luxury campsite on Hudayriyat island, a leading leisure destination by Modon Properties. The island is located on the west coast of Abu Dhabi and has quickly become one of the emirate’s most thrilling sporting destinations. It boasts a range of high-end sporting facilities that add fitness-themed fun to its picturesque surroundings while promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.

O’Regan said: “We look forward to showcasing Hudayriyat Island to the world through an action-packed global sport spectacle that will attract fans and families from the UAE and across the globe. Hosting the Modon Abu Dhabi Padel Master reflects our vision to offer leisure and recreational attractions across the Emirate in a way that inspires residents to lead healthier and active lifestyles.”

The Modon Abu Dhabi Padel Master 2023 will see 128 top-ranked men and women players compete in the main draw from 21 - 26 February, while the qualification round will occur from 18-20 February. The Master tournament is WPT’s top category tournament, awarding players with the highest number of ranking points across the entire tour. The Modon Abu Dhabi Master will grant a total prize money of €450,000, the highest amount ever awarded in a WPT tournament.

The event sponsors include Abu Dhabi property developer Modon Properties, multinational food chain McDonald’s, leading Spanish brewer Estrella Damm, sports equipment company Head, and leading Spanish Padel equipment supplier Bullpadel, amongst others.

Abu Dhabi Master — this is the main draw of the first WPT tournament of the year

The final draw of the Abu Dhabi Master has been announced, and everything is ready for the first world padel tour tournament of the year.

The wait is coming to an end. From February 21st to 26th the first WPT tournament of the year will take place in the Arab Emirates: The Abu Dhabi Master.

The circuit has already announced the main draws, and the highlight is that finally Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia were favored in the draw, and will start as number two seeded couple. In their first match as a couple, they will face Garcia and Barahona.

The world number ones, Ale Galan and Juan Lebron, will have a very tough debut against the dangerous pair of Xisco Gil and Ramiro Moyano, who will surely make things difficult for them.

In the women's draw, the match between the Sanchez Alayeto twins and the new duo of Delfi Brea and Sofia Araujo - serious candidates to climb positions in the ranking - stands out.

The queens of world padel, Gemma Triay and Alejandra Salazar, will play their first match against the debutant couple Cortiles/Saiz.

World Padel Tour season kicks off with the Abu Dhabi Masters

After a long wait, since Barcelona put the finishing touch to the World Padel Tour season with the Final Master in December last year, the competition starts again in the blue heart with the Abu Dhabi Master from the 21st to the 26th of February.  The tournament will be played at the Bab Al Nojoum complex on Hudayriyat Island and will be the first World Padel Tour tournament to be played on Arabian soil.

Timetables and television to watch it

The main draw will get underway on Tuesday 21st with the first round of 16, which can be seen on the World Padel TV app from 7:00 Spanish time (3:00 in Argentina). The number 1 pairing of Alejandra Salazar will kick off the tournament and then at 15:30 Spanish time (11:30 Argentine time) we’ll be able to see one of the most exciting pairings, Arturo Coello and Agustín Tapia, in action. The number 4 pairing of Paquito Navarro and Juan Tello will also play on Tuesday.

The last sixteen will be completed on Wednesday 22nd, which can also be seen on the World Padel TV app, and will feature the number 1 and 2 pairings on tour, Juan Lebron and Alejandro Galan, and Fernando Belasteguin and Sanyo Gutierrez.

The last sixteen will be played on Thursday and can also be followed on the official World Padel Tour channel with the most important men’s and women’s matches.

The novelties come on Friday, as only the quarter finals of the women’s draw will be available on World Padel Tour TV. The men’s matches will be broadcast on pay-per-view platforms. In Spain Movistar (Movistar Deportes or Vamos) or in Argentina Direct TV. The same will be true for the semi-finals and finals. Changes of partner encourage the start of the seasson

The dance begins in the Middle East with new partners on court. The movement of couples has been quite extensive with the aim of unseating the current number 1’s, both in the women’s draw (Alejandra Salazar and Gemma Triay) and men’s (Alejandro Galan and Juan Lebron). These new pairings have generated quite a lot of expectation, as they have brought together great young talents who are yet to see how they will work together and other super class veterans who are crossing paths again to fight against the generational change. These are the pairings that are generating the most excitement among padel fans.

Agustín Tapia y Arturo Coello

The Spanish-Argentine pairing is set to be one of those competing with Lebron and Galán for the number one spot. A perfect combination of youth, quality and explosiveness that will be directed from the bench by Manu Martin and Pablo Corsetti. JASP, young but more than prepared.

Franco Stupaczuk y Martín Di Nenno

Perhaps one of the most nostalgic reunions of the circuit. After playing almost all their formative years together, the super kids meet again, now in professional padel and turned into big stars. The grit, hard work and persistence are characteristics of a couple called to be at the top of the ranking.

Sanyo Gutiérrez y Fernando Belasteguín

“The boss” and “the magician” cross paths again to continue competing in a new padel dominated by youth and power. The guarantee of competing and the class they possess are two of the strengths of this great number 1 pairing.

Paquito Navarro y Juan Tello

Although they started playing at the end of last year, the fact that Paquito Navarro has completed a pre-season working from the right makes them a “new” pairing. We will see how the player from Seville has completely adapted to his new position on court and how he matches up with the aggressive play of “el gato” Tello.

Patty Llaguno y Victoria Iglesias

With the first three pairings settled after a fairly regular season 2022, the changes in the women’s circuit have happened from the 4th. This union between Llaguno and Iglesias has led to the change of the player from Murcia to the drive. This pairing has the makings to be fighting for high positions in the rankings.

Lucia Sainz y Aranza Osoro

If we were talking about a change from the backhand to the drive, here we have the reverse. Osoro switches to the backhand to play alongside a number 1 like Lucia Sainz. It is not a new position for her, as she has played there on several occasions for the Argentine national team.

Delfi Brea y Sofia Araujo

Bullpadel players come together with the aim of forming a solid project and make it difficult for the top couples of the ranking. The Argentine player and the Portuguese will seek to sneak into the final stages and get to fight for a title.

Virginia Riera y Tamara Icardo

After a difficult season due to a hand injury, the Valencian player Tamara Icardo will try to return to the 2021 level together with the experienced Argentinean player Virginia Riera.

Saeed bin Maktoum crowns winners of Modon Abu Dhabi Padel Master

Sheikh Saeed Bin Maktoum Bin Juma Al Maktoum, President of the UAE Padel Association, presented the trophies to the winners of the 2023 World Padel Tour season opener Modon Abu Dhabi Padel Master during the awards ceremony that took place among a packed crowd on the centre court located on Bab Al Nojoum, Hudayriyat Island.

Agustín Tapia/Arturo Coello Manso defeated Alejandro Galán Romo/Juan Lebrón Chincoa (7-6 / 6-3) to win the Men’s tournament, while Ariana Sánchez Fallada/Paula Josemaría Martín clinched the Women’s title by beating Alejandra Salazar Bengoechea/Gemma Triay Pons [6-3 / 6-3]. Also awarded were Ariana Sánchez Fallada and Arturo Coello Manso, who were bestowed the ‘Most Valuable Player’ award in their respective categories.

The sold-out finals provided thrilling excitement from some of the world’s top players who battled it out in the custom-built court on the beach. The winning duos expressed their delight at being awarded the highest-ever World Padel Tour points haul of 2,000 points.

Aref Al Awani, general secretary of Abu Dhabi Sports Council, said: “Abu Dhabi has cemented its position as a premier host of world-class sporting events. The Modon Abu Dhabi Padel Master has proven to be a resounding success, not only for the players and spectators, but for the entire regional sports industry. A wild card chance to enter the World Padel Tour

The UAE Wild Card Championship will allow wild card entries to compete in the pre-qualification round of the much-anticipated World Padel Tour.

Racquets at the ready, it’s padel time!

In January and February this year, the UAE Padel Association will be launching the first-ever national qualifying padel tournament across several emirates.

Entitled the UAE Wild Card Championship, the event will serve as a build-up for the World Padel Tour. With over 200 advanced padel teams from the UAE and the GCC expected, the championship will feature six padel tournaments.

Finalists from each tournament will earn ‘wild card’ entries to compete in the pre-qualification round of the World Padel Tour’s “Modon Abu Dhabi Padel Master”.

With padel fast gaining favour among residents in the UAE, especially the youth, opportunities will only further the goals of the UAE Padel Association to further develop the sport and its players. And of course, establish the country as an international padel spot to watch out for.

It is worth noting that the UAE Padel Association is currently finalizing discussions with Emirates Post Group to sponsor the national padel tournaments towards the World Padel Tour – Abu Dhabi Padel Master 2023, and details of this sponsorship are expected to be announced later this week.

Speaking at the press conference, H.E Al Fazari added: “Padel Tennis has become one of the most sought-after racquet sports events, earning a prestigious place in the international sporting calendar. We are pleased to host 128 of the world’s top male and female players in Abu Dhabi to compete on Hudayriyait Island, and we look forward to welcoming local and international visitors to the UAE’s Capital to enjoy the tournament and what the city has to offer.”

The Modon Abu Dhabi Padel Master 2023 will be the first Master tournament in the 2023 WPT season and marks one of only a handful of annual Master tournaments held around the world. Abu Dhabi joins Barcelona, Buenos Aires, Marbella, Valladolid, and Madrid as the latest city to host a WPT Master, the most prestigious tournament on the WPT circuit.

Delivering a virtual address, Corretja said: “We are excited to anchor a new Master tournament in Abu Dhabi, which has positioned itself as a world-class destination for leisure and sports entertainment with high-quality facilities and great infrastructure. This will not only be WPT’s first Master tournament of the 2023 season, but it will also be the only Master to be held in the Middle East, leveraging on the major boom the sport continues to witness in the UAE.”

The Modon Abu Dhabi Padel Master 2023 will take place at Bab Al Nojoum, Abu Dhabi’s luxury campsite on Hudayriyat island, a leading leisure destination by Modon Properties. The island is located on the west coast of Abu Dhabi and has quickly become one of the emirate’s most thrilling sporting destinations. It boasts a range of high-end sporting facilities that add fitness-themed fun to its picturesque surroundings while promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.

O’Regan said: “We look forward to showcasing Hudayriyat Island to the world through an action-packed global sport spectacle that will attract fans and families from the UAE and across the globe. Hosting the Modon Abu Dhabi Padel Master reflects our vision to offer leisure and recreational attractions across the Emirate in a way that inspires residents to lead healthier and active lifestyles.”

The Modon Abu Dhabi Padel Master 2023 will see 128 top-ranked men and women players compete in the main draw from 21 - 26 February, while the qualification round will occur from 18-20 February. The Master tournament is WPT’s top category tournament, awarding players with the highest number of ranking points across the entire tour. The Modon Abu Dhabi Master will grant a total prize money of €450,000, the highest amount ever awarded in a WPT tournament.

The event sponsors include Abu Dhabi property developer Modon Properties, multinational food chain McDonald’s, leading Spanish brewer Estrella Damm, sports equipment company Head, and leading Spanish Padel equipment supplier Bullpadel, amongst others.

The 2023 World Padel Tour kicked off in Abu Dhabi and Padel Galis was chosen to provide the official court for the first international tournament of the year.

Padel Galis has been the official World Padel Tour court since 2020 and is the only manufacturer to produce and sell, worldwide, the two licensed models: WPT Special Edition and WPT Challenger .

Padel Galis was chosen to install three WPT Special Edition courts – on both the centre court and courts 2 and 3 – for the Modon Abu Dhabi Master, the first event of the 2023 World Padel Tour.

Given the growth of padel and the expectation it is arousing in the United Arab Emirates, Padel Galis not only sent its installation and assembly team to Abu Dhabi, but also members of its commercial and management teams to provide potential customers in the area with advice about their projects. Abu Dhabi’s new Hafeet rail will boost railway tourism

The Hafeet Rail project, a collaboration between Etihad Rail, Oman Rail, and Mubadala Investment Company, has now moved into the implementation phase. This strategic railway venture, connecting Sohar in Oman to Abu Dhabi in the UAE, is set to transform regional tourism and commerce. The project was formally launched with the signing of a shareholders’ agreement, marking a significant milestone in enhancing connectivity between these major cities.

Enhancing Travel and Tourism

• Reduced Travel Times: Originally taking over three hours, the travel time between Sohar and Abu Dhabi will be significantly cut down to approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes. This reduction is due to the passenger trains’ ability to reach speeds of up to 200 kilometers per hour.
• Passenger Capacity: Each train is designed to accommodate up to 400 passengers, facilitating an efficient and comfortable travel experience.
• Tourism Boost: By connecting key cities, the railway is expected to significantly enhance tourism opportunities, allowing for smoother and quicker travel between popular destinations in the UAE and Oman.

Economic and Sectoral Impacts

• Freight Capabilities: The rail network will also include freight services, with trains capable of hauling over 15,000 tonnes of cargo, equivalent to around 270 standard containers. This capacity underscores the project’s role in strengthening the logistics and supply chains between the two countries.
• Diverse Sectoral Benefits: Hafeet Rail is poised to support a variety of sectors including mining, iron and steel, agriculture and food, retail, e-commerce, and petrochemicals. The rail’s integration with commercial ports promises to streamline cross-border trade and enhance market access.
• Investment and Employment: With a total investment of $3 billion, the project is not only a gateway to regional markets but also a creator of numerous job opportunities in both Oman and the UAE.

Navigating Challenging Terrains

The railway route traverses the challenging Jebel Hafeet Mountain ranges, featuring complex landscapes such as mountains, deserts, and limestone areas. This aspect of the project highlights the engineering feats involved in linking the commercial hubs to the broader rail network of both countries, facilitating easier and more efficient cross-border trade.

The Hafeet Rail project, recently rebranded from the former Oman and Etihad Rail Company, is set to be a cornerstone of Gulf region tourism and trade. By reducing travel times and connecting key economic zones, the railway will not only enhance tourism but also boost economic activities and employment across Oman and the UAE.

Hong Kong, China to host FIBA 3x3 World Tour Final 2024

HONG KONG (China) - The FIBA 3x3 World Tour 2024 season grand finale will be held in Hong Kong, China for the first time ever on November 23-24. The world's best 3x3 men's teams will battle it out for the World Tour title.

A regular host of major basketball events, the FIBA 3x3 World Tour Final in Hong Kong, China will culminate an action-packed World Tour season and showcase the world's best 3x3 players. The FIBA 3x3 World Tour Final is the ultimate World Tour stop as it features the best teams, and serves as the last stop of the season. The top 11 teams in the season standings will automatically qualify for the Hong Kong Final. Meanwhile, the 12th-ranked team, the host team (Hong Kong, China), and the team with the most combined Challenger and World Tour wins (excluding those already qualified) will battle for the remaining spot in a play-in event.

Mr. Kenny Wong, CEO of the Organizing Committee for the World Tour Final, highlighted the city's readiness and enthusiasm for hosting the event. "Hong Kong, China is thrilled to welcome the world's best 3x3 teams and their fans to our city. With its iconic backdrop and passionate basketball community, we are set to provide a spectacular setting for the pinnacle of the 3x3 season."

This year's World Tour features 17 stops around the globe, with Ub Huishan NE (SRB) aiming to defend their title as the two-time reigning champions. As teams prepare for the intense competition, all eyes will be on Hong Kong, China, where the world of 3x3 will converge for an unforgettable finale. Exciting, urban and innovative, 3x3 is inspired by several forms of streetball played worldwide and is considered the world’s number one urban team sport. Steered by FIBA, games see two teams of three players face off on a basketball half-court.

AI in focus as first-ever Abu Dhabi Global Healthcare Week gets underway

Abu Dhabi: The use of AI (artificial intelligence) in medical research is among key themes of the first-ever Abu Dhabi Global Healthcare Week (ADGHW), which started on Monday.

Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of Abu Dhabi Executive Council, inaugurated ADGHW, being organised by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi under the theme ‘Accelerating the Future of Global Healthcare’, at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) till May 15.

During a tour of the exhibition, Sheikh Khaled was briefed on the latest innovations in healthcare technologies and developments in medical sciences being showcased by healthcare institutions and companies. He was accompanied by Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Development and Fallen Heroes' Affairs.

The event is expected to attract 5,000 participants, including 1,000 delegates from participating countries, 100 exhibitors, and more than 250 expert speakers from around the world, who have gathered to exchange insights and discuss the latest scientific trends and technological initiatives in healthcare, including disease diagnostic systems, pharmaceutical manufacturing projects, and the development of genomics and hereditary disease research, among other areas.

Sheikh Khaled highlighted that the UAE’s efforts in the healthcare sector, including launching several initiatives, innovative projects and programmes, reflect the leadership’s vision to provide advanced healthcare by accelerating research in medical and therapeutic fields, and by investing in strengthening healthcare infrastructure, including hospitals, healthcare facilities and specialised laboratories, to help further enhance the community’s health and quality of life.

He emphasised that organising this global event reflects Abu Dhabi’s commitment to supporting and encouraging investment in research and development in healthcare and life sciences by reinforcing cooperation and strategic partnerships between the public and private sectors to accelerate the transition to a preventive healthcare ecosystem that uses the most advanced innovations, while further strengthening Abu Dhabi’s position as a leading global healthcare hub that attracts innovation and global talent.

During its first day, the event is hosting the Healthcare Leaders Forum, which will welcome around 200 VIPs including ministers and public officials, CEOs, international investors, heads of multilateral organisations, and leading health and medicine experts, to discuss ways of taking action to address current challenges in global healthcare. The results and recommendations of the forum will serve as a foundation for developing future strategic healthcare plans.

Meanwhile, the Future Health Summit will host a wide variety of panel sessions and live discussions around themes central to healthcare, including the use of AI in medical research, human longevity research, genomics, biotechnology, and pharmaceuticals, among other themes.
