Aer Lingus, the flag carrier of Ireland, has in recent years taken advantage of a favorable geographic location that’s easily accessible from the U.S., and as a result, has added numerous flights to the North American continent. This is especially true for the East Coast of the U.S. As the second-largest airline in Ireland, you should have no trouble finding an Aer Lingus flight from the U.S.

In this guide, we’ll be analyzing all of Aer Lingus’ nonstop routes between the U.S. and Ireland. We’ve got a bit of ground to cover, so let’s begin.

Aer Lingus is generally reliable when it comes to operating its aircraft on specific routes. In addition, Aer Lingus’ Dublin base makes for a relatively short flight between Ireland and much of the U.S., so we won’t be seeing high-capacity aircraft such as the Boeing 777, 747, or 787, or the Airbus A380.

Instead, Aer Lingus operates using a mostly point-to-point model to connect cities across the U.S. to Ireland.

Ireland acquires most of its air passengers from tourism, which is why the aircraft operated are smaller than, say, British Airways , which routinely uses the Airbus A380 and Boeing 777.

Now, let’s talk a bit about the different ways to fly Aer Lingus using points and miles.

Aer Lingus happens to be owned by the same parent company as British Airways and Iberia. Both of these carriers are members of the Oneworld Alliance , but Aer Lingus is currently not a formal member.

You can redeem United MileagePlus miles (through North American gateways only), Aer Lingus Avios , British Airways Avios , and Cathay Pacific Asia Miles for travel on Aer Lingus.

Aer Lingus doesn’t have many partners you can redeem miles with, but you’ll still have a few options to use points for flights on Aer Lingus.

Unfortunately, Aer Lingus doesn’t currently offer any first class options on its routes between Ireland and the U.S.

Aer Lingus Business Class Options

The goal of business class is to enjoy a lie-flat bed, good food, and a peaceful flight to your destination.

Aer Lingus doesn’t disappoint in this regard, as long as you pick the best seats. In business class, you’ll enjoy a cheerful inflight experience, decent award redemptions, and good food and beverage selections.

Here are the planes that you can currently fly business class between the U.S. and Ireland — there are both narrow- and wide-body aircraft that Aer Lingus uses for these flights:

• Airbus A330-200
• Airbus A330-300
• Airbus A321neo LR

The Airbus A330 is a wide-body aircraft that’s spawned a number of different versions since the jet has been in production, with the -200 variant being among the older ones.

As far as the seats themselves go, there are 23 total in the cabin. These Thompson Vantage XL seats all lie completely flat, though they’re on the small side, with just 21 inches of width and 58 inches of pitch.

Here’s what the seat map looks like:

The best seats in this cabin are 3K and 5K , which are both so-called “throne” seats . If you can’t reserve those, the next best seats are the window seats at 3A and 5A.

While it’s harder to find the Aer Lingus A330-200 these days, you may still find it flying the following routes:

• Newark (EWR) – Dublin (DUB)

The next product we’ll look at is found on the Airbus A330-300, a larger variant of the A330. The cabin itself is larger — you’ll find 30 seats instead of 23, making it 30% larger than the cabin on the -200 variant.

Otherwise, the seats themselves are identical to what you’d find in the -200, with 21 inches of pitch and 58 inches of pitch.

Here’s what the seat map looks like on this aircraft:

As we already discussed, the most preferred seats are the “throne” seats, of which there are 3 in this cabin. These are 3K, 5K, and 7K. You would want to pick 5K first, followed by 3K and 7K last , based on distance from the lavatories.

If the throne seats are all reserved — a very strong possibility — the next-best options are 2A, 4A, and 6A. These are true window seats and are much more private than aisle seats in 3A, 5A, and 7A.

You can generally find the A330-300 flying on the following routes:

• Boston (BOS) – Dublin (DUB)
• Chicago (ORD) – Dublin (DUB)
• New York (JFK) – Dublin (DUB)

Finally, there’s Aer Lingus’ relatively new, narrow-body Airbus A321neo LR. The business class cabin on these planes has 16 lie-flat seats in an alternating 2-2 and 1-1 configuration.

Each seat measures 20 inches wide, extends to a bed that measures 78 inches long, and offers 45 inches of pitch when upright.

For context, this seat and configuration most closely resemble JetBlue’s original Mint product , whereby there are throne seats (the best options), and seats without direct aisle access.

The best seats (especially for solo travelers) are 3A, 3K, 5A, and 5K . These are throne seats that provide tons of space all for yourself. Of course, you won’t have a seatmate to worry about, making it ideal for solo travelers.

You’ll find this single-aisle aircraft on the following routes:

• Boston (BOS) – Shannon (SNN)
• Cleveland (CLE) – Dublin (DUB)
• Hartford (BDL) – Dublin (DUB)
• Newark (EWR) – Dublin (DUB)

Unfortunately, Aer Lingus doesn’t offer a premium economy product to flyers.

Aer Lingus Economy Class Options

Aer Lingus is known for offering some of the most affordable economy tickets to Ireland and onwards to Europe if you’re willing to take connecting flights.

The seats aren’t the biggest economy seats in the world, but you can make your ride more comfortable by reserving the right seats on the right plane.

Our economy class ranking is as follows:

The A321neo LR has the largest economy seats of all these aircraft. They’re arranged in a 3-3 configuration with a single aisle, and each measures 18 inches wide and offers 32 of pitch.

The best seats are in row 15, thanks to the exit row. Also, rows 13 and 14 have limited recline, so be sure to avoid those when you can. You’ll also want to avoid rows 13, 14, 25, and 34 if you can due to the restrictive recline, lack of windows, and proximity to lavatories and galleys.

That being said, snagging a seat in row 15 can make the difference between feeling constricted and feeling more free to move around. You’ll find the A321neo LR flown on these nonstop Aer Lingus routes:

The A330-200 has a total of 243 seats in economy. Each of them is 17 inches wide and offers 31 to 32 inches of pitch. The economy cabin is arranged in a 2-4-2 configuration as shown here:

The exit row seats are located at rows 11 and 29. Row 11 seats are the best in this case, specifically seats 11A and 11C . This is because the seats are located on the opposite side of the lavatory. Instead, there’s only a galley near 11A and 11C.

If you can’t reserve 11A or 11C on Aer Lingus’ A330-200, you can try aiming for the bassinet seats at 11D/E/G to avoid the lavatories. If those are taken, we suggest you choose 11H/K, followed by seats in row 29.

Our last choice would be the Aer Lingus A330-300, which is essentially a more-crowded version of the A330-200. The seats are the same design and size, but there are more of them.

Aer Lingus’ A330-300 has 287 economy seats , whereas its A330-200 has 243. The 2-4-2 configuration remains the same, but the positioning of the lavatories and galleys is the main difference.

The best seats in this layout are in rows 8 and 30 . Fortunately, there are no lavatories near row 8, and the lavatories near row 30 are significantly further from the seats than is typical.

Those traveling as a couple should pick 2 seats on a single side of the aircraft in the exit rows to maximize comfort.

Aer Lingus provides great options for travelers to get to Ireland without requiring positioning flights, especially in the Northeastern U.S.

For example, its network in cities like Hartford (BDL) and Philadelphia (PHL) allows flyers to avoid a connection in larger, busier airports like Boston (BOS), New York (JFK), or Washington, D.C. (IAD).

There’s a clear hierarchy of seats on any given Aer Lingus aircraft, and it will always be in the solo traveler’s best interest to book the business class throne seats. Keep in mind that these are competitive, and window seats are a decent consolation prize.

Aer lingus resumes flights to minneapolis after pandemic suspension.

Aer Lingus has resumed nonstop flights to Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP), which marks the airline’s full restoration of its transatlantic network since the pandemic started.

On April 29, the Irish flag carrier operated the first direct flight from Dublin Airport (DUB) to the Twin Cities since the route was temporarily suspended in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The service between both cities was originally launched in July 2019.

Aer Lingus will use an Airbus A330-300 aircraft for the route, including Economy and Business Class cabins. The fares start at $349 one-way.

The resumption of this route marks the full restoration of the Irish airline’s North American network to pre-pandemic levels. Other U.S. destinations served with nonstop Aer Lingus flights from Dublin are Boston Logan (BOS), Chicago O’Hare (ORD), New York John F. Kennedy (JFK), Washington Dulles (IAD), and Miami International Airport (MIA).

Furthermore, Aer Lingus is set to expand its U.S. network further by launching a fourth weekly service to Denver International Airport (DEN) on May 17.

“Aer Lingus is delighted to welcome the return of Minneapolis-St. Paul to our North American route network,” said Reid Moody, Chief Strategy and Planning Officer at Aer Lingus. “There has been a noticeable demand from our passengers for the reinstatement of this route following the temporary pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The resumption of this route and the future expansion of its U.S. network is not just a response to the current situation but part of Aer Lingus’ long-term strategy to turn Dublin into a major hub connecting destinations in Europe and North America.

According to the airline, nearly half of its passengers who have flights booked from MSP to Dublin plan to catch a connecting flight onwards to destinations including London, Manchester, Edinburgh, Paris, Amsterdam, Rome, Barcelona, and Berlin, ensuring a strong and sustainable future for our operations.

“We are dedicated to offering passengers seamless connections between North America and Ireland and onward from Ireland to the rest of Europe,” added Moody. “The re-introduction of this route marks the airline’s full restoration of our pre-pandemic North American network and serves as a testament to this commitment.

“Minneapolis-St Paul is a significant business destination within the U.S., and we look forward to once again facilitating corporate links and connectivity between Europe and North America through our Dublin Hub.”

The route will run four times weekly: every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. Departure from Dublin is scheduled at 2:30 PM local time, and arrival in Minneapolis is at 5:05 PM CDT. Return flights from Minneapolis will leave at 6:55 PM and arrive in Dublin at 8:35 AM the next day.

Aer Lingus will face competition on its MSP-DUB route when Delta Air Lines launches a 5x weekly service between the two cities on May 9.

If your booking was made on aerlingus.com, you can change the travel dates, times, destination or upgrade your fare type via our Manage Trip facility. However if your booking includes partner airline connections, or was made with our Reservations Team, please contact us in order to make the required changes.

Please be aware that if you also purchased travel extras directly from Aer Lingus these are not automatically transferred to your new booking and must be rebooked.

• Changes can be made up to two hours before the scheduled departure time, after which all money associated with the flight (with the exception of Government tax) is forfeited.
• Changes may be subject to a change fee plus fare difference depending on the fare type purchased.
• Note that there is no refund/travel credit of the difference in fare should the new fare be of lower value than that of the original fare, or if a fare of lower value becomes available subsequent to purchase.

Customers may select seats in advance while booking online or up to 48 hours before departure via our Manage Trip facility (24 hours for flights to/from North America).

After the initial seat selection, subsequent seat changes are not possible until the flight is open for check in.

If Aer Lingus changes your flight, we will do everything we can to make sure you and your companions will have the seats you originally selected, or equivalent alternatives of the same type. If you voluntarily change your flight, and the seat type which you originally paid is not available, the seat fee is non-refundable.

Aer Lingus has announced the return of a number of direct flights to North America starting this month.

From this April and throughout the summer, Aer Lingus will welcome back a number of exciting US routes including Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and Seattle.

In addition, the airlinr company will operate a second flight to Chicago flying five times per week and for the first time, will introduce a second flight to Washington D.C. This good news follows the recent re-start of popular routes to San Francisco and Orlando from Dublin, New York and Boston from Shannon, not forgetting the announcement of the return of Miami from Dublin in October.

Philadelphia returned on 07th April with six flights per week, rising to daily from May and Chicago began operating a second flight five times weekly from 08th April. For the first time ever a second daily flight to Washington D.C. will operate from 09th June, enabling customers to connect from Washington D.C. to cities such as Naples, Lyons, Berlin and Barcelona for the first time through Dublin. Just last month flights to the USA from Shannon started on 10th March, with 14 flights per week to New York and Boston.

65 years of crossing the pond: a history of aer lingus' transatlantic operations.

The Irish national airliner recently marked the 65th anniversary of its first flight across the Atlantic.

Aer Lingus celebrates 65 years of carrying passengers between Ireland and the United States this week. Simple Flying looks at the history of the airline's transatlantic operations and takes a glimpse toward the future as the carrier gears up for its busiest-ever summer crossing 'the pond.'

How it all started - the inaugural flight

On Saturday, April 28th, 1958, a Lockheed L1049 Super Constellation belonging to Aerlínte Éireann (the predecessor of the modern-day Aer Lingus) set off on the company's inaugural flight across the Atlantic.

The flight, originating from Dublin and heading to New York via Shannon in the west of Ireland, marked the start of 65 years of transatlantic operations, which continues in earnest today. Onboard were 99 passengers traveling in a single cabin, all looked after by six crew members.

In 1958, upon the start of direct flights between Ireland and the US, Aerlínte Éireann became the 17th airline to begin scheduled services across the North Atlantic, and the inaugural flight touched down to a salute from the 165th Infantry of the New York National Guard.

Before that first flight departed Irish shores, the airline held a celebratory banquet attended by then-Taoiseach (Irish for prime minster) Éamon de Valera and Minister for Industry and Commerce Seán Lemass.

The Mayors of Dublin and New York were guests of honor at the event, and a large press contingent was invited to be at the departure of that first flight.

Passenger experience in the early days

Aer Lingus' early transatlantic passengers consisted mainly of those who had chosen to emigrate from Ireland to join other family members who had already settled in the United States. The company estimates it carried almost 15,000 passengers to and from New York in its first year flying across the Atlantic Ocean.

Back then, flying on the Constellation, the flight time from Ireland to New York was approximately 14 hours outbound and slightly shorter on the return leg to Ireland. The flights were noisy compared to the jets of today, and with a cruising altitude between 16,000 and 18,000 feet, the journey between Ireland and the US was far more susceptible to turbulence.

These days, the outbound flight duration on the ever-popular Dublin to New York-JFK route is almost half that of 1958, with a scheduled time of around 7 hours and 30 minutes.

Compared to the 99 passengers on that inaugural flight, today, Aer Lingus passengers can find themselves sharing the cabin of the airline's A330s with 316 others.

The arrival of the jet age

With the introduction of the long-haul jet airliner in the late 1950s, the complexion of commercial air travel changed for good. Aer Lingus was keen to keep up with its competition and not get left behind with its aging propliners flying across the Atlantic.

The faster, larger aircraft, which included the Boeing 707 and 720, the Dougls DC-8, and to a lesser degree, the de Havilland Comet, unlocked longer routes and offered a far superior onboard passenger experience than the aircraft they replaced.

But they also offered economies of scale, carrying many more passengers than the Constellation and flying across the Atlantic in half the time, which allowed for better utilization per aircraft. Their higher capacities also helped to lower seat costs and thus opened up air travel to a far wider market.

Aer Lingus received its first of three Boeing 720 s in 1960. As a shortened version of the already popular Boeing 707, this aircraft could fly further and faster than its longer sister, making it an ideal choice for Aer Lingus on its flagship transatlantic routes from Dublin to New York and Boston. These aircraft proved a hit with Aer Lingus passengers.

As such, in 1964, the airline invested in the larger Boeing 707 , which remained part of the carrier's fleet until the mid-1980s. With the advent of such aircraft, the Irish flag carrier also took the opportunity to expand its transatlantic network with the addition of flights from Ireland to Chicago and Montréal.

Enter the Jumbos

With the entry into service of the Boeing 747-100 commercially with Pan Am on January 22nd, 1970, this plane quickly revolutionized long-haul flying. Once again, spotting an opportunity, Aer Lingus obtained its first example of the type by the end of that year.

With the introduction of the Boeing 747 for transatlantic operations, the 720s were released, and the 707s relegated to deployment on shorter routes in the airline's network, along with some being leased out. The last left the fleet in 1984.

The carrier took delivery of EI-ASI, which it named ' St. Patrick' , on December 15th, 1970. Just over three months after the first 747 arrived, it was followed by a second example, registered as EI-ASJ. This aircraft arrived unnamed at Aer Lingus on March 18th, 1971.

The final 747-100, EI-BED (' St. Kieran '), arrived with Aer Lingus in January 1979. This airframe had already flown for German flag carrier and established 747 operator Lufthansa for nine years.

All three examples were leased out frequently during their time with Aer Lingus due to their operational costs, and eventually, all were released from the long-haul fleet for good by the start of 1997.

Their replacement was to revolutionize transatlantic operations for the airline once more with the arrival of the twin-engined, ETOPS-equipped Airbus A330.

The introduction of the Airbus A330

When selecting a successor for the hardy 747 that had served the carrier so well for over two decades, Aer Lingus began operating aircraft from the European manufacturer Airbus for the first time in 1994. The airline selected the A330-300 for its transatlantic routes thanks to the advent of ETOPS operations, permitting longer oceanic crossings.

The A330 family would quickly become a hit with the airline's accountants and passengers alike. The planes offered a new onboard experience, and its operational economics far exceeded those provided by the Boeing 747.

The A330 has become the workhorse of Aer Lingus' long-haul operations. The fleet quickly grew from just a handful of examples in the first few years of operations to an impressive ten airframes operating for Aer Lingus today.

According to data supplied by ch-aviation , along with the ten examples of the A330-300 , which forms the backbone of the Aer Lingus widebodied fleet, the airline also operates a pair of A330-200s which are mainly deployed on the carrier's routes to the west coast of the United States (see below).

A further single A330-300 (registered G-EIDY) is operated by Aer Lingus' wholly-owned British subsidiary, Aer Lingus (UK) Limited, for operations from Manchester to North America (see below).

Leased aircraft

Passing mention should be made to several more unusual aircraft types that Aer Lingus has used over the years on its transatlantic routes.

Between 1989 and 1997, Aer Lingus wet-leased several Lockheed TriStars to boost capacity over the peak summer months. These primarily came from American Trans Air, although a single example (G-BBAF) was also leased from Caledonian Airways in the UK from June 1996 to October 1997.

The Tristar was not the only three-engined widebody operated by Aer Lingus, however. Between May and September 2001, the airline leased World Airways MD-11 N272WA for additional summer capacity.

Like the Tristrars, this aircraft wore the full Aer Lingus livery and, indeed, continued to do so for some time after returning to World Airways at the end of that summer season.

In July 2013, the carrier announced a program of expansion into North America starting in 2014, including a direct service from Dublin to San Francisco five times weekly and a daily service from Dublin to Toronto. The latter was to be operated by Air Contractors on behalf of Aer Lingus using Boeing 757-200s.

It was also announced that transatlantic services from Shannon to Boston and New York would operate daily all year round from January 2014 to Boston and from March 2014 to New York-JFK. Again, the airline would lease Boeing 757-200ER aircraft from Air Contractors to operate these routes, freeing up its Airbus A330 aircraft to increase frequencies from Dublin.

Lastly, the carrier has also utilized three Boeing 767 at periods in its transatlantic history. Between 1993 and 1994, the airline leased a pair of Boeing 767-300ERs from Trans World Airlines (TWA) and a single 767-200 from Omni Air International during the summer of 2016.

Manchester joins the party

On March 24th, 2021, Aer Lingus launched new long-haul routes to New York-JFK and Boston from Manchester Airport , using new Airbus A321LR planes. These services were to be operated by Aer Lingus (UK) Limited using aircraft leased from the parent company in Ireland.

With its UK operation entering its third year, the carrier has recently announced that its daily Manchester to New York service will be upgraded to an Airbus A330 for the upcoming summer, with the daily service to Orlando also sticking with the widebodied jet.

Given the success of the Manchester long-haul operations since 2021, the airport will likely see additional Aer Lingus transatlantic services in the future, according to the airline's CEO .

Looking ahead

Looking ahead, the upcoming northern summer season will see Aer Lingus operate its biggest-ever transatlantic operations program. The airline will fly from Ireland (Dublin and Shannon airports) and Manchester to 17 destinations in North America , using a combination of A330 and A321LR aircraft.

Thirteen of its 17 US and Canada routes will be from Dublin, helped by the return of Hartford and its brand-new Cleveland service. Meanwhile, Shannon and Manchester have two routes each. Note that a further route to Miami is currently a winter-only operation. The destinations to be served in summer 2023 are as follows -

New fleet, new routes?

So, as Aer Lingus marks the 65th anniversary of transatlantic operations, it is worth considering what the future holds for the carrier's all-Airbus long-haul operations across the pond.

The main point to note is that the carrier has six Airbus A321XLRs on order , which will unlock other long-haul markets where demand doesn't warrant an A330. This represents an increasing trend in long-haul travel.

Aer Lingus is already a big fan of the A321LR's long-haul capabilities, as seen on the above routes to North America. In the next few years, we will likely see the airline expand even further to other markets on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean and possibly elsewhere.

As with the departure of that first Lockheed Constellation flight 65 years ago this week, the airline is poised to expand its long-haul horizons in the future. Out of the 99 passengers on that first flight across the Atlantic, how many would have realistically considered the same airline offering 17 routes to North America from both Ireland and the UK by 2023? Possibly only a few!

Aer Lingus announces new routes to North America launching in 2024

Aer Lingus is expanding its North American route network by introducing new travel options. This includes the inauguration of a new route to Denver, Colorado, and the revival of the Minneapolis-St. Paul route.

These notable additions will augment the airline's existing routes connecting Ireland and North America, bringing the total to 18. This expansion underscores the airline's unwavering commitment to its Dublin Hub strategy: convenient connections to various European destinations.

Flights to Minneapolis-St. Paul will commence with a schedule of four times per week starting from April 29, 2024, and this will transition to daily year-round service commencing October of the same year. Likewise, flights between Dublin and Denver are set to take off on May 17, 2024. Travelers embarking from these cities will have the opportunity to link up with 20 European destinations via Dublin. The operational aspect of these flights will be overseen by the advanced Airbus A321XLR aircraft.

Aer Lingus Route Heatmap 

As a result of this strategic expansion, Aer Lingus will ascend to become the fourth-largest contender in terms of its extensive long-haul network. Furthermore, it will be the fifth-largest European airline in terms of seating capacity provided on routes between the United States and Europe. This enlargement will cultivate enhanced business cooperation and seamless connectivity between Europe and North America.

Aer Lingus continues to soar with return to Minneapolis-St. Paul

Aer Lingus is flying high, as the newly returned Minneapolis St. Paul (MSP) route takes off from Dublin Airport for the first time since it was paused in March 2020. 

This restart marks the full restoration of the airline’s pre-pandemic North American network, offering British customers access to even more US gateways.

From today – 29 April 2024 – Aer Lingus will offer four weekly flights between Dublin and Minneapolis St. Paul, with flights operated by the airline’s widebody Airbus A330 aircraft.

Flights have been timed to allow seamless connections to and from the airline’s 15 destinations in Mainland Britain, including London Heathrow, Manchester, Edinburgh, giving customers unrivalled access to Minneapolis.

Customers looking to experience the magic of Minnesota can enjoy one-way fares from the UK from as little as £279, including taxes and charges.

The non-stop service to Minneapolis St. Paul was first launched in July 2019, but was paused less than a year later due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Minneapolis-St. Paul, more commonly known as the ‘Twin Cities’, offers a dynamic combination of both business and leisure.

The thriving business scene boasts strong ties to Ireland, particularly in the biomedical and healthcare sectors, while the metropolitan area is also renowned for its vibrant art, music and culinary scenes.

Whether there for business or pleasure, visitors have a plethora of attractions to enjoy, including the iconic Mall of America or even escaping to the lakes and beautiful parks nearby.

Aer Lingus’ strategic expansion of its North American network reflects its commitment to its Dublin Hub strategy, offering seamless connections to Europe in addition to connection between North America and Ireland.

Currently, almost half of booked passengers from Minneapolis St. Paul to Dublin plan to connect at Dublin, with top destinations including London, Manchester, Edinburgh, Paris, Amsterdam, Rome, Barcelona, and Berlin.

A new inflight Business Class menu is inspired by the best Irish cuisine has to offer and has been specially curated based on customer feedback. All dishes are focused on seasonal, sustainably sourced, local produce, as the airline continues to deliver a hearty and healthy meal to passengers.

Business Class passengers will enjoy dishes such as skin-on thyme and parsley chicken supreme, herb-infused roasted pork, flaky pan-fried hake and citrus-marinated salmon.

Those looking for a lighter, or vegetarian, option can also now look forward to a new rich root vegetable and pearl barley stew, served with a seasonal salad. This, and many more new additions are now available for Business Class passengers on long-haul flights.

All passengers can enjoy the perks of the newly enhanced Wi-Fi speeds now connecting to next generation satellites and improving coverage across transatlantic routings.

The expanded entertainment library is sure to please as it has expanded by a third with the addition of more movie blockbusters, documentaries, and the latest TV Shows.
