Commuters pleased with upgraded bus terminal

Commuters in Penang are delighted at being able to use services offered at the newly upgraded Sungai Nibong Bus Terminal (TSN).

Regular commuter Chum Soon Choi, 60, who has been taking buses at the terminal for over a decade, said the facility represented another milestone for Penang in achieving user-friendly public transport.

“The eticket system is more convenient for commuters, compared to how we were previously being harassed by ulat tiket (ticket touts),” he said.

Chum, a storekeeper, said the waiting areas, improved seating and information displays were now more user-friendly too and helpful to commuters.

However, he said TSN could be further improved with the installation of air-conditioning in the terminal’s waiting areas.

“It is quite hot now. Installing good air-conditioners will make it more comfortable for commuters,” he said.

Marketing executive Syaira Bahari, 25, from Kuala Lumpur, said she was impressed with the upgraded TSN and the noticeable improvements.

“It’s spacious now. It is well-lit at night too, and has become a comfortable place for commuters to wait for buses,” she said.

However, she said the new terminal should have more eateries to give commuters greater options.

The bus terminal’s upgrading project cost RM7mil. Work began in August 2021 and was completed last month.

Launched by state local government committee chairman Jason H’ng Moon Lye, the building is owned by Penang Island City Council (MBPP).

The project was a collaboration between terminal management Easybook (M) Sdn Bhd, UDA Holdings Bhd and agencies under Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Ministry.

H’ng said the bus terminal was popular with Penang residents and tourists looking to travel to destinations throughout peninsular Malaysia.

“It is estimated that 1,000 people use the terminal daily to access bus services, and the number triples during festive seasons,” he said in his speech.

He praised MBPP and Easybook for the successful collaboration, and commended them on the project’s completion despite various challenges, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic recovery phase.

Easybook has been operating the bus terminal since 2021 and has management rights for a three-year period until this August.

H’ng said that during this period, Easybook was tasked with upgrading and constructing additional terminal buildings.

He said the company was responsible for TSN’s fee collection, management, operational supervision, cleanliness and security systems, adding that he hoped Easybook could improve the commuter experience.

Easybook is the largest integrated and online ticketing operator in the country, encompassing the majority of express bus operators.

The company also manages operations at Kota Kinabalu Sentral and Tawau Terminal in Sabah, Sungai Petani Terminal in Kedah, Tun Aminah Terminal in Johor and several other bus and ferry terminals across Asean.

Additionally, Easybook handles terminal and ticketing system operations for land and water transport in several locations abroad.

Easybook chief executive officer and founder William Lee said the company secured the tender for upgrading and managing TSN in 2020.

The upgrade included equipping the terminal, originally built in 2004, with the most modern systems and applications, he said.

This comprised the Easybook Terminal Management System (ETM) that included Centralised Ticketing System (CTS), Terminal Operating System (TOS) and Passenger Information Display System (PIDS) modules as implemented by the Land Public Transport Agency (Apad), said Lee.

“The terminal’s original development cost was RM6.2mil, covering the development of systems and building upgrades.

“However, the total cost of the TSN upgrade reached RM7mil and the project was completed in April,” he said.

The increase was due to the rising cost of construction materials and additional works, such as the provision of five- star-standard restrooms, new floor tiles, tar and interlocking stone roads and replacement of all cables and pipes, he elaborated.

“The cost of the ETM system was RM3mil, with other expenses totalling RM4mil,” Lee added.

UDA Group Asset Management chief operating officer Azrudyn Rashid said TSN would be part of the light rail transit (LRT) system, which was still in its early stages, specifically in soil investigation and finalising its alignment.

In the latest report released by Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp), the alignment will begin from Penang Sentral on the mainland to Macallum, the proposed first station on Penang island.

From Macallum, it will pass by Komtar, through Jalan Gurdwara, Solok Sungai Pinang, Sungai Pinang and Jelutong Timur all the way to Silicon Island.

Two proposed stations – Bandar Sri Pinang and Sky Cab – along Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway, which were seen in the original plan, have since been omitted.

On March 29, Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced that the Federal Government officially took over the Penang LRT Mutiara Line project from the state government, with MRT Corp appointed as developer and asset owner.

Procurement of the project is divided into three main components: civil construction works for Segment 1 which is the alignment of Silicon Island to Komtar; works for civil construction for Segment 2 which is the line from Komtar to Penang Sentral; and a turnkey contract for system and carriage (coach) works.

William J. Burns, the C.I.A. director, who has been the lead American negotiator in efforts for a cease-fire in Gaza, plans to travel to Europe this weekend for talks with his Israeli counterpart to try to revive the stalled discussions over a pause in the fighting and the release of hostages, according to a U.S. official and another person briefed on the negotiations.

This month, frustration boiled over between officials from Hamas and Israel, and the countries mediating — the United States, Qatar and Egypt — put the talks on hold.

Israeli officials were upset with what they saw as shifting negotiating stances by Hamas, including the number of hostages to be released in a first phase. Hamas was upset by Israel’s operations in Rafah, the southern Gazan city, which have been progressing since.

But core to the dispute were disagreements over how to define a cessation of hostilities between Hamas and Israel, and how different stages of the cease-fire would be put into effect.

The resumption of talks, at an undisclosed location in Europe, is expected to take place over the next few days. It is not clear if Egyptian and Qatari negotiators will join Mr. Burns and David Barnea, the chief of the Mossad, Israel’s spy agency, to directly take part in the discussions.

Mr. Burns, however, has been in close contact with Egyptian and Qatari negotiators as the mediators look to get the talks back on track, said a U.S. official.

In early May, Mr. Burns did shuttle diplomacy between Egypt and Israel trying to push for the first phase of an agreement to begin, including a staggered process for the release of hostages and a temporary halt in fighting.

The talks in the coming days are expected to be the first since that round of negotiations ended. While it is unclear what could be achieved with Mr. Burns’s new discussions, restarting the talks is, at this point, a notable development.

U.S. officials say a hostage-for-cease-fire agreement has to be reached for all their other diplomatic efforts to get momentum, including discussions of a postwar administration in Gaza and a megadeal for a Palestinian state that the Americans and Saudis want Israel to agree to.

But Israeli military operations in Rafah continue to complicate the picture. The more aggressive the Israeli operations there, the less Hamas wants to negotiate.

Some American officials have said Israel is taking their advice on how to mitigate some civilian casualties — which has contributed to an erosion of international support for Israel with over 35,000 people dead, according to the Gazan health authorities.

On Wednesday, Jake Sullivan, the U.S. national security adviser, said he was optimistic that Israel, so far, was not conducting the kind of major operation in Rafah that the United States had feared it would. But questions remain about exactly what the Israeli intentions for Rafah over the longer term might be.

Storms will rumble into Memorial Day weekend as nearly 44 million travel for the holiday

Nearly 44 million people are traveling this Memorial Day weekend, but severe spring weather will put a damper on some of the festivities with showers and thunderstorms forecast across the country along with scorching heat in South Texas and Florida.

Summer fun is already kicking off with nearly 3 million people screened Thursday at Transportation Security Administration checkpoints — the second highest screening volume in the agency's history. The busiest airports so far are in Atlanta, Dallas, Denver, Chicago and Los Angeles.

The Federal Aviation Administration said last week that it is anticipating Memorial Day weekend to be the busiest since 2010 with 53,515 flights Thursday and 50,129 Friday.

But the skies may not be on revelry’s side as heavy rain and severe thunderstorms are forecast to continue from the Midwest to southern Plains on Friday, with extreme rainfall rates of up to 2 inches per hour.

Forty-five million people are at risk from Chicago all the way down to Austin, Texas, with biggest risks being damaging hail, strong wind gusts and a few possible tornadoes.

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for parts of Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin through 1 p.m. local time (2 p.m. ET) with threats of tornadoes and scattered wind gusts up to 75 mph.

That means major airports in Chicago, St. Louis and Dallas-Fort Worth could all see major delays.

Come Saturday, scattered storms will head into the Northeast. All the while, another round of severe weather will develop across the central and southern Plains before shifting into parts of the mid-Mississippi and Ohio valleys, according to the National Weather Service .

Sixteen million people will be at risk of severe weather Saturday affecting Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri with threats of strong tornadoes, hail and winds over 75mph likely, as well as nocturnal tornadoes in west-central Oklahoma and south-central Kansas. Cities to watch for storm damage include Oklahoma City, Kansas City, and Wichita.

Another outbreak of severe weather is possible Sunday, with 39 million people at risk of strong tornadoes, damaging hail and winds up to 75 mph. The cities with the greatest threat include St. Louis and Indianapolis.

All the while, “dangerous and potentially record-breaking heat” continues across South Texas, the Gulf Coast and southern Florida through Memorial Day, the NWS said.

Heat advisories are in place through 7 p.m. CT (8 p.m. ET) for parts of southern Texas anticipating heat index values up to 114.

On Memorial Day itself, the East Coast will see rain and thunderstorms, the Midwest a mix of sunshine and rain, and the South will be very hot and humid. Airports on that day in Chicago, Detroit, New York-Newark, Philadelphia and Washington will likely see delays.

The weekend weather comes after a week of wild weather across the Midwest and South. Tornadoes have been reported every day since Sunday, with another 23 reported Thursday.

These changes will come into effect on August 1, 2024 and will impact dogs travelling from Canada to the United States. The CFIA is currently in the process of reviewing these requirements. New import conditions for personal pet dogs and assistance dogs from countries at high-risk for dog rabies starting September 28, 2023

Personal pet dogs and assistance dogs from countries at high-risk for dog rabies will require an import permit issued by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency before travelling to Canada.

If you're planning on bringing your dog into Canada from September 28, 2023 onwards, prepare in advance and learn more about the import process .

Pets must meet specific requirements when travelling to Canada or another country. It is your responsibility to review all the requirements for your situation.

Some requirements must be completed at specific times and if not completed correctly or on time your pet may not be eligible to travel and be refused entry.

As soon as you know your travel details, contact your local veterinarian to assist with the pet travel process. Requirements could include obtaining a health certificate, updating vaccinations, testing, or administering medications.

Only dogs, cats and ferrets qualify as pets by Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). Check requirements for other animals if you're travelling with a non-traditional pet.

Travelling to Canada from another country (import requirements)

Requirements for bringing an animal into Canada apply to the following situation:
