Domestic Policy FAQ's

Why buy state domestic cover.

Our Domestic and Domestic Cancellation plans are for New Zealand residents travelling within New Zealand.

More than one third of domestic travellers experience an unexpected circumstance that can leave them out of pocket.

It doesn’t matter if you are travelling to Auckland or Amsterdam, if your child becomes unwell and you need to cancel your trip, it’s good to know you’re covered.

Specific terms, conditions and exclusions apply to Covid-19. See our State Travel Policy Wording for full details.

Here are some examples of real-life stories

  • An airline lost a customer’s suitcase and the items were not recoverable Luggage Value: $2,500
  • A customer’s rental vehicle was written off after a third-party collision Rental Vehicle Insurance Excess: $4,000.

Here are some examples of types of claims

Medical claims*

  • Sprained limbs or broken arm, leg, wrist due to outdoor activities
  • Asthma, seizure, stroke, heart attack
  • Swimmer's ear/ear infection.

*Pre-existing medical conditions must be declared, and extra cover purchased under Domestic Plan prior to departure

Your cancellation costs prior to travel

  • Prepaid deposits on motorhome rentals, scenic train, or ferry tickets
  • Prepaid fares for rail trips, adventure holidays and cruises
  • Costs for cancellation due to redundancy, illness, injury, and medical operations.

Cancellation prior to departure will result in the loss of deposits paid and in other instances full cancellation fees often apply.

Delayed travel

  • Travel delays due to weather e.g. snowstorms and fog delaying connecting flights.

Luggage claims

  • Broken cameras, smartphones and electronic items
  • Lost spectacles, hearing aids and damaged dentures.

What Domestic options are available?

We offer 3 Domestic plan options to choose from and these can be purchased quickly and easily on our website.

Domestic plan (Single Trip Policy or Annual Multi-Trip Policy)

Our Domestic plan (Single Trip Policy and Annual Multi-Trip Policy) is our most comprehensive domestic plan.

The Domestic plan Annual Multi-Trip Policy is sometimes a more suitable option for those travellers who are planning to travel more than twice this year and for no longer than 30 days at a time within New Zealand.

Domestic Cancellation plan Single Trip Policy

Our Domestic Cancellation plan covers domestic travellers for cancellation cover only and you choose the cancellation cover limit to best meet your needs when you purchase your policy.

What activities are covered?

There are plenty of fun activities to do around New Zealand year-round, and we have a comprehensive list of activities which are covered under our Domestic plans (excludes Domestic Cancellation Plan).

Our plans automatically include:

  • Bungy Jumping
  • Horse Riding
  • Jet Boating
  • Paragliding
  • Parasailing
  • Snorkelling
  • White Water Rafting

Other activities may be covered as an add-on to your Domestic plan (excludes Domestic Cancellation plan). See our State Travel Policy for full details.

What cover is available for Skiing and Snowboarding?

Because being on the snow and participating in winter sports activities often increases the risk of injuries or incidents, you'll need to ensure you amend your Domestic plan (excludes Domestic Cancellation plan) to include snow activities like skiing and snowboarding by purchasing a winter cover (snow sports) upgrade. This can help protect you against unforeseen costs should you have a mishap on the slopes and need medical assistance. Sporting and ski equipment are not covered whilst in use and if you are a New Zealand citizen, ACC may cover some costs due to injury caused by an accident.

You will only be covered if you have purchased the Domestic Plan with the winter cover (snow sports) upgrade and:

  • You are skiing, snowboarding or snowmobiling on-piste, or cross-country skiing;
  • You are not participating in a Professional capacity; and
  • You are not racing.

Note: sporting and ski equipment are not covered whilst in use.

What if I travel frequently in NZ, do you have a multi-trip option?

Multi-trip travel insurance may save you time and money. If you are planning to travel more than twice this year and for no longer than 30 days at a time within New Zealand, consider our Domestic Plan Annual Multi-Trip Policy.

Can you explain the rental vehicle insurance excess?

This benefit applies to our Domestic Plan (excludes Domestic Cancellation Plan) and covers the rental vehicle excess if your rental vehicle is stolen, or damaged while you are driving. You will still need to take out rental vehicle insurance.

A $4,000 rental vehicle excess cover can save you money if you need to make a claim.

Note: that your rental agreement may still require you to take out rental vehicle insurance.

If you are driving your personal vehicle on your domestic holiday there is bonus cover of $2,500 for your comprehensive vehicle insurance excess.

What does the medical cover provide for?

Our Domestic Plan D *(excludes Domestic Cancellation Plan) can provide you with cover for unexpected medical and dental expenses up to $1,500. This is for treatment provided in New Zealand.

It only applies up to 12 months from when you suffered a disabling injury, sickness, or disease. Travel insurance protects you from unforeseen events. Routine medical or dental treatments, prenatal visits and continuation of treatments are not covered.

What existing medical conditions are covered?

We automatically cover a range of existing medical conditions (EMC) under the Domestic plan (excludes Domestic Cancellation Plan). Automatically covered conditions include - asthma, epilepsy, gastric reflux and more! Read the State Travel Policy Wording for a full list of the conditions we automatically cover. If your existing medical conditions are not all automatically covered, you may complete an online medical assessment to determine if cover is available. Other travel insurance benefits unrelated to your EMC still apply, even if cover cannot be provided for your specific condition/s.

*Medical cover will not exceed 12 months from onset. Medical and dental expenses cover is limited to $1,500 for treatment provided in New Zealand. This $1,500 sub-limit does not apply to International or Inbound Plans.

If you have travel insurance in NZ, your insurer will cover the purchase of a few essentials, meaning you won’t have to bear the brunt of the loss of your GoPro, laptop, camera and whatever else you may have lost.

Medical treatment

When you compare travel insurance policies in NZ, you may notice that most policies offer medical and dental cover. This may be just something simple like drugs for a cold or allergy while you’re overseas, or it could be something a little more complicated like surgery. Some policies may even pay for someone to escort you back home if you’re feeling really unwell.

Car rental excess

If you’ve rented a car while you’re overseas and it gets stolen or damaged then your travel insurance policy may be able to help you out, by providing cover for the excess you’ll need to pay for when you make a claim.

Personal liability

In the event that you accidentally damage property or are liable for damage to a person, your travel insurance provider may provide cover to pay the costs including legal fees to defend your claim and legal costs if you’re wrongly arrested or detained. While we hope it would never come to this, it doesn’t hurt to have the assurance that you would be covered if you were liable for something. Even the cheapest travel insurance policies in NZ usually provides cover for this.

Travel Insurance FAQ

What does travel insurance usually cover.

Although it will depend on your chosen insurance provider and policy type, a typical travel insurance plan will have coverage for all of a travelers main concerns. Standard travel insurance will generally cover you for trip cancellations, travel delays, medical emergencies, lost luggage and personal liability.

Most travel insurance policies are designed to be comprehensive, to protect you from a variety of situations and events that may cause financial loss. However, there are optional extras that can be added onto your policy, such as dental, adventure activities and rental car cover.

Should I get travel insurance?

While travel and adventure is always encouraged, the reality is that even the most well planned trips can go amiss. Nobody wants to prepare for the worst, but it’s absolutely vital to do so - and that’s why you should get travel insurance. Investing in travel insurance cover allows you to safeguard your trip, providing you with peace of mind and letting you get on with your holiday.

When should you buy travel insurance?

It goes without saying, that the best time to buy travel insurance in NZ is before you embark on your travels. However, the time you get travel insurance before that matters too. Ideally, you should book travel insurance within 15 days of trip purchase so that you have enough time to cancel the insurance if need be, and you won’t have any external events affecting the premium.

How do I file a claim for travel insurance?

While this may differ between different travel insurance companies, to claim for travel insurance you generally need to fill out an online claims form which you can find on your travel insurer’s website. You’ll then need to send supporting documents to confirm that it’s you filing the claim, and your insurer will start working on it!

Is there travel insurance for seniors in New Zealand?

Travelling can be the highlight of anyone’s year no matter where you’re venturing and we believe that age is no barrier to this. That’s why we can show you affordable travel insurance in NZ for seniors from insurers such as Southern Cross Travel Insurance, 1Cover and more that will insure you on your travels even if you’re older than 85.

I was a little hesitant to stay on the call when I first picked up but I’m glad I stayed until I did. Josua Legavai was the lovely lady taking care of me. She was so friendly, clear and helpful. She helped me understand everything I needed to and explained everything with great detail. I am still young and learning and have just moved into a new home with my son so I’m grateful she was able to help me today.

I'm so happy I asked Glimp for help, to find a service provider that suits our family's budget, without losing quality and unlimited data on both our mobile phones and broadband. Mele Falahola is a Comparison Specialist from Glimp and she was amazing from the beginning. Mele located the right service provider for our needs that will save us money!, fulfil our usage and more! compared to what we were using. My wife and I even asked for a comparison on our electricity bill. Mele responded immediately once she saw our monthly bills and compared it to another provider that not only do not required a contract to stick too (like the mobile and broadband provider Mele recommended) but their price per kWh was so much better! Which is why we changed that also. Thank you Mele and Glimp for your help. We can now look forward to our Christmas holiday in the Cook Islands from what we can now save. :-)

  • Free cover for dependent children

Dependent children travelling with someone covered under a policy can be covered at no additional charge (for Domestic Cover – that's up to 18 years, and for International Cover – up to 21 years).

  • Cover for some COVID-related situations^

Both domestic and international options include selected cover for epidemic and pandemic diseases, like COVID-19. So if you’re diagnosed on your trip and need medical assistance or need to change your plans, you’ll be covered.

  • Cover before you depart

Your trip is protected from unforeseen cancellation and loss of deposits the moment your cover is confirmed.

Some recreational sports are automatically covered under our policies, including leisure skiing and snowboarding, hot air ballooning, parasailing and paragliding, bungee jumping, and white-water rafting in grade 4 rivers (or less).

For all of these benefits, please make sure you read the Policy Wording to understand the terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions that may apply.

^The policy still has a general exclusion for epidemics and pandemics, and does not cover disinclination to travel due to fear or change of mind. Cover is only provided if you have not commenced your journey against the New Zealand Government’s advice not to travel. There is no cover for lockdowns, changes in government alert levels, quarantine or mandatory isolation applying to a population or part of a population. Please refer to the Policy Wording for full details.

^Terms, conditions, limits, sub-limits and exclusions apply and these are stated in the Policy Wording . Customers considering the purchase of a travel insurance policy should read the Policy Wording to check what is and isn’t covered.

Frequently asked questions

What countries does my selected cover^ for epidemic and pandemic diseases (including Covid-19) cover?

All countries that do not appear on the Level 4 warning “Do not travel” advisory listed on SafeTravel.

SafeTravel houses all warnings inclusive of non-Covid-19 advisories which are issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT).

If I contract Covid-19 prior to travelling do I have selected cover^ for epidemic and pandemic diseases?

Cover is in place, providing that the country you are travelling to does not have a MFAT, SafeTravel or New Zealand Government Level 4 warning “Do not travel” in place.

If I contract Covid-19 in transit to my destination country do I have selected cover^ for epidemic and pandemic diseases?

Cover is in place, providing that the countries you are travelling to do not have a MFAT, SafeTravel or New Zealand Government Level 4 warning “Do not travel” in place.

Does selected cover^ for epidemic and pandemic diseases still apply if I am unvaccinated?

Cover is in place as there is no requirement to be vaccinated/boosted under our policy. However, if the destination country requires an inbound traveller to be vaccinated, then the traveller must be able to meet these entry requirements. This also applies to the condition of carriage for example of the airline they are travelling. There is no cover if denied boarding or entry to a country due to not meeting the carrier or country vaccination requirements.

Are there any mandatory epidemic and pandemic insurance requirements to enter certain countries?

Many countries, even before the pandemic, had compulsory health and travel insurance requirements, but many more have since added rules – typically around Covid-19 medical expenses and the associated costs. The coverage type and amount varies by vaccination status and country.  Prior to travelling, check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination.

If I had Covid-19, should I declare this as a Pre-existing Medical Condition?

At the time of purchasing your policy if you have previously had Covid-19 and are now testing negative, are feeling well with no symptoms at all, then you do not need to declare this as a Pre-existing Medical Condition. A Covid-19 positive test result at a later date would be considered a new infection.

However, if you are:

  • still testing positive; or
  • still displaying Covid-19 signs and symptoms; or
  • have been diagnosed with 'long Covid';

and you wish to have cover, you need to disclose the condition as a Pre-existing Medical Condition and an additional premium may be payable.

Travel insurance FAQs

Travel insurance is a specific type of insurance that helps cover a number of costs and disruptions associated with travelling both domestically and overseas. Levels of cover differ per policy, however, travel insurance typically protects against trip cancellation, delays, lost luggage and personal belongings, medical expenses and repatriation, and personal liability.

Most travel insurance providers offer single or multi-trip policies, which can cover multiple countries within a specific timeframe. The destination, length of trip, specific activity add-ons and pre-existing medical conditions all help determine the cost of a travel insurance policy. Policies can be purchased at the time of booking a trip up until the time a traveller leaves their home.

Travel insurance varies for individual travellers based on the options selected by them, so prices vary from person-to-person. The cost of a travel insurance policy is determined by:

  • Age of traveller/s: the older the traveller, the higher the policy cost may be.
  • Number of travellers included in the policy: a higher number of travellers creates more variables, therefore increasing risk.
  • Length of trip/s: a single trip policy is generally around half the amount of a multi-trip policy, making the latter more cost-effective for frequent travellers, while shorter trips often pose less risk of medical incidents and travel interruptions, resulting in lower costs.
  • Destination/s: costs vary greatly depending on the countries and regions covered by a policy. For example, regions such as Europe will often be cheaper than trips to the USA because of the high cost of medical treatment in America.
  • Level of coverage: travellers can opt for cheaper travel insurance as well as comprehensive, more expensive plans to cater to their different needs.
  • Existing medical conditions: a customer’s policy will increase if their medical history shows an increased risk of possible medical treatment requirements while travelling.

While a cheaper policy cost upfront may seem appealing, always read the Policy Wording to ensure your needs are adequately covered should an incident occur.

Travel insurance protects you when travelling domestically or internationally by providing coverage against unforeseen circumstances that may negatively impact your travel plans.

By purchasing travel insurance prior to departure, your policy can help cover the costs of trip cancellations should you no longer be able to travel, as well as the costs of medical treatment, lost passports and personal items while you’re travelling. The customer usually pays for these costs upfront, before being reimbursed by the travel insurer upon claim approval.

To approve a claim, travel insurers require documentation such as a police report or medical bill to confirm the incident occurred.

Always read the Policy Wording before purchasing a travel insurance policy to ensure it provides adequate coverage for your circumstances.

Unfortunately, travel insurance can’t cover absolutely everything. This highlights the importance for travellers to read the Policy Wording before purchasing to avoid becoming frustrated when claims are unsuccessful. It will contain details on the situations you likely won’t be covered in, including:

  • Cancellation: simply changing your mind prior to your trip may not be sufficient for a successful claim.
  • Pre-existing conditions: if medical conditions aren’t disclosed or covered by the policy at time of purchase, exclusions may apply to coverage related to those conditions.
  • Theft or loss of belongings while left unattended: travellers must take care of their belongings as they would as home.
  • Incidents occurring as a result of reckless behaviour: claims arising from excessive drinking or taking recreational drugs will likely be rejected.
  • Winter and adventure sports: claims resulting from participation in high-risk sports will be void unless covered by the policy.
  • Terrorism and extreme weather events: travelling to specific regions against the advice of the government or your insurer may result in unsuccessful claims because the events are no longer unforeseeable circumstances.

For full details of exclusions within a travel insurance plan, consult the Policy Wording.

Purchasing a policy soon after a trip is booked has a number of benefits and increases a traveller’s protection.

When purchased ahead of time, a traveller can cancel their travel insurance policy for a full refund within the cooling-off period. If the policy is purchased before the customer leaves their home to depart for their trip, claims for rearrangements and cancellations caused by unforeseen circumstances can also be made.

By considering travel insurance as an essential part of booking a holiday - not an afterthought when at the airport - travellers are likely to be covered should an incident arise before take-off.

See all travel insurance FAQs .

*Medical cover will not exceed 12 months from onset. Medical and dental expenses cover is limited to $1,500 for treatment provided in New Zealand. This $1,500 sub-limit does not apply to the Inbound medical section. Emergency dental expenses are limited to $1,500. ~Cooling-off period is available if you wish to cancel your policy within 21 calendar days of the date of purchase and you have not made a claim under the policy or departed on your journey.

Travel Insurance Essentials for New Zealanders Going Abroad

Traveling is an integral part of the New Zealand culture. Whether it’s exploring the scenic landscapes within New Zealand or venturing overseas, having reliable travel insurance is crucial. For those looking to get a travel insurance quote, the process has never been easier. With the digital age, travellers can now buy online, ensuring they receive the best quotes online. Trusted by many, travel insurance within New Zealand offers peace of mind, ensuring you’re covered anywhere in NZ and beyond.

New Zealanders Travelling Abroad: Securing peace of mind with Travel Insurance Cover, get a quote now.

Travel and its importance for new zealanders.

New Zealanders have a rich history of exploration, both domestically and internationally. Domestic travel within New Zealand offers a plethora of experiences, from the beaches to the mountains. But whether you’re traveling locally or internationally, ensuring your travel plans are protected is paramount.

Understanding Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is not just a policy; it’s peace of mind. It provides cover for unforeseen events, from medical emergencies to lost luggage. Every New Zealander venturing overseas should consider purchasing travel insurance, as it protects against potential financial setbacks during travel.

Travel Insurance Cover: What Does It Include?

A comprehensive travel insurance cover includes medical and dental expenses cover, ensuring that pre-existing medical conditions are considered. It also provides protection for luggage and travel documents, ensuring you’re not left stranded without essentials. Additionally, for those renting vehicles, the rental vehicle insurance excess can save significant costs in case of an accident.

Getting a Quote: How to Purchase Travel Insurance

The digital age has made purchasing travel insurance a breeze. Travellers can buy online, often receiving discounts for early purchases. However, it’s essential to read the policy wording for full details. For the best coverage, consider buying your policy within 21 days of your travel booking.

Domestic vs. International Travel Insurance

While domestic travel insurance covers travels within New Zealand, international travel insurance is designed for overseas adventures. For frequent travellers, an annual multi-trip policy can be cost-effective, covering multiple trips within a year.

New Zealand Overseas Travel: What to Look Out For

When planning overseas travel, it’s essential to consider the government’s advice not to travel to certain regions. Your travel insurer plays a pivotal role during such times, guiding on how the insurance will respond to claims in volatile situations.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on Travel Insurance for New Zealand Travellers Traveling Overseas

Why do new zealand travellers need travel insurance for overseas trips.

Answer: Travel insurance provides protection against unforeseen events during overseas trips, such as medical emergencies, lost luggage, or trip cancellations. It ensures peace of mind and financial security while traveling.

Can I buy travel insurance online?

Answer: Yes, many insurance providers offer the option to buy travel insurance online, often at competitive rates. Purchasing online can also provide instant coverage and policy documentation.

How do online travel insurance quotes differ from traditional methods?

Answer: Online quotes are often faster, more convenient, and can be compared easily with other providers. They allow travellers to review and purchase policies at their own pace without the need for face-to-face meetings.

What should I consider when comparing online travel insurance quotes?

Answer: Look for the coverage amount, inclusions and exclusions, any deductibles, the premium cost, and customer reviews. Ensure the policy covers all your planned activities and destinations.

Are pre-existing medical conditions covered?

Answer: Coverage for pre-existing medical conditions varies by policy. Some insurers might cover them with an additional premium, while others might exclude them. Always disclose such conditions and read the policy wording carefully.

Is domestic travel within New Zealand covered in these policies?

Answer: Some policies might offer both domestic and international coverage, while others might focus solely on international travel. If you require domestic coverage, ensure you select a policy that provides it or consider a separate domestic travel insurance policy.

How soon should I purchase travel insurance before my trip?

Answer: It’s advisable to purchase travel insurance soon after booking your trip. Some benefits, like coverage for trip cancellations, are only available if the policy is purchased within a specific period after booking.

What if the government advises not to travel to my chosen destination?

Answer: If the government advises against travel after you’ve purchased your insurance, some policies might cover cancellation costs. However, if the advisory was in place before purchasing, it’s likely you won’t be covered. Always check the policy wording and stay updated with government advisories.

Can I buy travel insurance if I’m already overseas?

Answer: Some insurers offer policies for travellers who are already overseas, but there might be waiting periods or exclusions. It’s always best to purchase insurance before departing.

What should I do if I need to make a claim?

Answer: In the event of a claim, contact your insurance provider as soon as possible. Provide all necessary documentation, such as medical reports or police reports, and follow their guidance. Ensure you keep all receipts and evidence related to your claim.

Travel insurance policies can sometimes be complex. It’s common to have questions, especially in today’s context with the pandemic. For instance, many wonder about travel cover and COVID-19. It’s always recommended to refer to the travel insurance FAQs or consult with your insurer for specific queries.

Travel insurance is an indispensable tool for New Zealand travellers. Whether you’re exploring the beauty within New Zealand or embarking on an international journey, ensure you’re protected. Always remember to buy online for the best quotes and read the policy wording carefully. Safe travels!

Please Note - If you are cruising around Australia you need to select Pacific. With Regions, variances can apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. You are not required to enter stop-over countries if your stop-over is less than 48 hours.

If you don’t know where you’re traveling to within the next 12 months, choose Worldwide to ensure you’re covered no matter where you go. If you’re travelling to multiple countries choose the region that you are visiting that is furthest away (excluding stopovers less than 48 hours). In most cases you will be covered for the closer regions as well. For example, if you choose Europe, you will also be covered in the Middle East, Asia and Pacific.

Worldwide means anywhere in the world

Americas means USA, Canada, South America, Latin America, Hawaii and the Caribbean

Europe means all European countries, including UK

Middle East refers to the area from Syria to Yemen; Egypt to Iran

Asia generally means Asia and the Indian subcontinent. For some insurers this excludes Japan*

Pacific means the South West Pacific, Australia and Indonesia/Bali*. Select Pacific for domestic cruises in New Zealand waters

New Zealand means domestic travel within New Zealand only

*Note: Variances apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. Check that your destination is covered once directed to your chosen insurer’s site.

Don't use these fella's. I brought insurance back in August and told by the NZ insurance experts they won't cover the virus as it's a general exclusion like a nuclear disaster. SCTI have the same clause but are covering if purchased prior to 28 January. Look around and find better options.
