  • LESLEY O 1 contribution 0 5.0 of 5 bubbles Couples Day Trip to Bruny Our first trip to Tassie and we were very excited to visit Bruny Island for the day. Our guide Rick was extremely informative and obviously is very passionate about what he does. Nothing was too much trouble and he catered for all of the different personalities on board. We loved the lighthouse tour, our yummy lunch at the pub and trying all of the different foods and treats that Bruny has to offer. A wonderful and especially scenic day. Would highly recommend. Adventure in Bruny Island Tour from Hobart

Arguably Tasmania's best day trip! At the end of this day, you will understand why the tourist numbers have doubled in the past 4 years! Bruny Island has a little bit of everything mainland Tasmania has - world class beaches, national parks, rugged coastline and native wildlife matched with the finest local produce from the ocean and the land.

While its impossible to do everything in one day, we have designed various tours to fit in with the day's weather conditions so we can provide the most enjoyable experience. You can expect an active (easy/moderate level) morning with nature walks, albino wallaby spotting, spectacular scenery lookouts, exploring pristine beaches and lagoon (swimming optional). This tour takes you off the beaten track and into areas that are only accessible by walking tracks that only locals know about.

After an adventurous morning, it will be time to pull it back a gear as we head for lunch to either the Bruny Hotel, Cafe or winery (lunch at own cost). There are options to suit all budgets and dietary requirements. After lunch, unwind and relax as we sample some award winning local produce. Berries, chocolate fudge, cheese, beverages and oysters are all possibilities (time pending and at own cost)!

Some of the things you can expect to see and do with Bruny Island Tour:

Tempered rainforest walk.

This casual walk will take you through a lush rainforest that runs alongside the relaxing Waterfall Creek.

This easy, twenty minute walk will allow you to take in the beautiful scenery and peaceful ambience of the rainforest whilst breathing in some of the freshest air Tasmania has to offer.

Picturesque beaches

Bruny Island is home to countless beaches, each as picturesque as the other.

Be prepared to be in awe of their natural beauty, clear water and pristine sand as you visit some of our favourite beaches on the island.

We will bring along our bat and ball if you are up for a game of beach cricket!

Viewing platform at the Neck.

Here is your next Instagram shot! Arguably the most iconic and most recognised landmark on the island, the lookout at the Neck never fails to disappoint.

Walk up the 279 timber steps to be rewarded with breathtaking 360 degree views of the island. Alongside the spectacular views, keep an eye out in the dunes for some burrows, fairy penguins and mutton birds nest here!

Wildlife spotting

Keep on the lookout! Bruny Island is a haven for a variety of Tasmania's unique native wildlife. Perhaps the most special is the albino wallaby, a rare species that is thriving on the island.

Keep your cameras at the ready on our walks and when we take you to a secret spot that the illusive albino wallaby is known to visit. You never know your luck!

Walking tracks (active level)

Depending on the days forecast, the track we choose to take you on will vary. Rest assured that each track offers something unique to experience.

From visiting the second tallest sea cliffs in Australia and the spectacular views they offer to exploring secluded beaches to soaking up amazing views from panoramic lookouts, you are sure to be impressed.

These walks vary in duration and require a moderate level of fitness.

Cape Bruny Light house

Located at the southern tip of the island, the convict built Cape Bruny Lighthouse is now the second oldest lighthouse tower in Australia (1836).

Whilst visiting, soak up the gorgeous views of the southern ocean and the rugged sea cliffs that form the coastline of Cape Bruny.

Our lunch stop will be at one of two locations depending on the day.

Based on which location we choose to eat lunch, you will have the option of dining in at the Bruny Island Hotel or grabbing some food from the general store next door. There's plenty of space for you to sit down either at the benches or at the beach.

If you would prefer to bring your own lunch for the day, you are more than welcome to.

Secret water holes and lagoons

Sample award winning food.

If the natural beauty of the island isn't enough, Bruny has a range of gourmet produce that is guaranteed to please every food lover.

We will be stopping at a variety of locations where you can meet the locals and sample their mouth watering produce on offer.

Potential tastings include: berries, cheese, chocolate, fresh oysters, wine, beer and cider.

*cheese and chocolate tastings are complimentary, all other tastings at own cost if you wish to sample

Swimming (weather permitting)

Be sure to pack your bathers and towel, if the weather is kind we will be able to take you for a swim*.

Like our walking tracks, we have a variety of picturesque swimming locations to choose from depending on the day's outlook.

From jumping into the fresh ocean, bodysurfing waves or enjoying the serenity of peaceful lagoons and canals, each of our locations offer a unique and enjoyable experience.

If swimming isn't for you, enjoy a relaxing stroll along the sandy beaches, explore rock pools or just sit back and relax and soak up your surroundings.

*Swimming is at own risk.

More information.

Let us help you to make the most of your visit to Bruny Island.

Bruny Island Cruises Seafood Restaurant

Do I Need to Book?

We recommended booking a few days ahead as our boats are often full and you may be disappointed if you chance to just turn up on the day. We are flexible with bookings so it is not a problem if you decide to change to another day or cancel, whatever the reason. No fee is charged for cancellations before the cruise date (so long as you contact us).

What about the weather?

Our boats are designed to suit the coastline along which we travel and we will certainly make the most of any weather conditions. Our bookings are fully flexible so if you decide the weather on the day is not for you, you can give us a call and we can change your reservation to a different day. Our staff are upfront about the weather and you are welcome to contact us a day or two ahead to get an honest indication of the forecasted weather. Of course, in Tasmania the weather can at times be a little surprising and so a forecast is exactly that, a forecast!

What about sea sickness?

Being in open ocean, sea sickness can be an issue for a small number of people. We have had 13 years experience in dealing with this and have developed some very effective techniques to minimise the chance of sea sickness occurring.

We offer all-natural Travel Calm Ginger tablets to everyone when they step onboard. This product has proven extremely effective in preventing sea sickness in most people. Our staff can also suggest a number of things to further assist in minimising the chances of any sea sickness symptoms:

  • Selecting a seat in the back third of the boat (there is a lot less movement up the back of the boat)
  • Keeping your body temperature on the cooler side
  • If you wear glasses or sunglasses keep the lenses clean at all times
  • Avoid looking through cameras, binoculars etc
  • Stay away from acidic foods before the cruise such as Orange Juice and coffee

We do emphasise that communication is the key - if you have any concerns please let our staff know.

What do I need to wear?

It is important that you are adequately dressed because it is cold on the boats, even in summer. Warm jackets gloves, scarves & beanies are a good idea. We provide wet weather jackets which go over the top of your clothing, but we encourage you to bring a few warm layers of your own.

Can hire cars go onto Bruny Island?

Generally Yes. The road from the Ferry Terminal to our Booking Centre in Adventure Bay is fully sealed - there is no need to travel on any gravel roads. There is a short ferry crossing, which is not normally a concern for hire car companies. If you are concerned, we suggest confirming with your hire car company whether there are any restrictions. Alternatively, you can always join our Kettering Bus Pick Up Service.

Are young children OK?

Children of all ages are welcome aboard our boats and we take many children along on our cruises. As parents you are probably the best judge as to how your children will cope with being out on the water for 3 hours, but we have found that the majority of children enjoy the experience and love seeing the amazing wildlife, huge cliffs and caves along the Bruny coastline.

Is the cruise OK while pregnant?

For the majority of days the cruise is quite suitable for pregnant women and we have had lots do our trip. Our boats are custom built for the coastline that we cruise along. They are able to cut through chop and therefore we can avoid the bumping of waves that some boats experience. It is a good idea to take into account the weather conditions on the day of the cruise as this will effect comfort levels for someone who is heavily pregnant. You can contact us a day or two ahead to get a weather report for the day of your cruise and we are happy to move or cancel bookings if it is not looking suitable for you.

This Tropical Island Off The Coast Of Australia Is A Great Destination For Hiking

I f you love anything to do with the great outdoors, you'll be like a kid in a candy store when you visit Australia. From the Great Barrier Reef to the Southern Lights, its land, water, and sky are chock-full of natural attractions. Everyone has heard of the surfing haven Gold Coast and the trendy metropolis of Melbourne, but one of Australia's hidden gems for nature lovers is found in the country's southernmost state, Tasmania. Bruny Island is one of the world's must-visit destinations for avid hikers .

Located in the Tasman Sea, Bruny Island waits just off of Australia's gorgeous coastline in Kettering, Tasmania. This local vacation spot is home to a wide variety of trails for beginner and expert hikers alike. Between its lush eucalyptus forests, pristine beaches, and abundance of natural wildlife, hiking along this dreamy tropical island guarantees an awe-inspiring experience -- as long as you keep a few key details in mind.

Most Popular Hiking Trails On Bruny Island

If you're indecisive, choosing a hiking trail on Bruny Island can be challenging. The island boasts a remarkable selection of walking paths for tourists to explore, but a few stand out.

The Flute Cape Walk is perhaps the most popular hike. This 3.9-mile loop offers a moderate challenge and provides stunning views of Adventure Bay, one of the island's famous attractions. For those seeking an advanced hiking trail, the Labillardiere Peninsular Walk is the perfect choice. This 8.9-mile trek through South Bruny National Park takes approximately 5 hours and offers jaw-dropping wilderness scenery, as well as encounters with furry friends like cockatoos and wallabies.

If you're looking for a breathtaking view, locals highly recommend visiting the Bruny Island Neck. This narrow strip of land connects the northern and southern parts of the island. Atop this unique landscape is the Truganini Lookout, accessible via a 200-step staircase. Named after Truganini, an Aboriginal woman, and dedicated to the island's native Nuenonne people, the lookout provides an aerial panorama of the entire island. Birdwatchers will also find this spot perfect for observing unique residents such as penguins and short-tailed shearwaters.

Preparing For Your Trip To Bruny Island

If you're ready to start planning your hiking getaway to Bruny Island, here are a few practical tips to ensure a smooth trip. Most visitors begin their journey in Hobart, Tasmania, the largest city near the island. From Hobart, you can either drive or take a bus to the small coastal city of Kettering. The car commute takes approximately 40 minutes, while there are usually five buses a day that complete the route in about an hour.

Upon arriving in Kettering, you'll need to take a 15-minute ferry to Bruny Island, either on foot or in your car. Once on the island, there is no public transportation available. Unless you plan to take a guided tour or explore on foot, it is recommended to bring a vehicle. Many of the island's best sights are located far from the ferry drop-off point, particularly within the South Bruny National Park. To enter the park, you will need to purchase a park pass from the official Tasmania Parks & Wildlife Service.

The most popular times to visit Bruny Island are from September to February. During these months, average temperatures range from 62º-68ºF, so it is advisable to pack warmer layers. If you plan to visit in the spring, it is recommended to bring a raincoat and water-resistant boots, as it is the island's wettest season.
