A Guide to Xenotes Water Tours by Xcaret

Sep 23, 2020 | Central America | 0 comments

Does rappelling, kayaking, swimming, zip-lining and cliff diving into a cenote sound fun? What about a jungle picnic? If so, this all inclusive excursion was designed especially for you. This is your chance to spend an entire day, deep in the River Maya jungles at Xenotes. Goodbye beach…the jungle is the new place to be!

COVID-19 Warning: Masks are required on the transportation bus and when entering the cenotes. However, a mask is not required during the actual excursion. For your safety, your temperature will be taken before entering the bus and your shoes will be sanitized.

About Xenotes

This area of Mexico is known for its beaches, along with some of the world’s best hidden cenotes. What is a cenote? It is a natural fresh water filled sinkhole in limestone found especially in the Mexico.

On this “all inclusive” tour, you will visit four types of cenotes located in the Mayan Jungle. While at the cenotes, you will get a chance to rappel, zip-line, cliff dive, water slide, swim and kayak.

Insider Tip: The average temperature of a cenote is 75 degrees.

Transportation

Transportation pick up is 8am to 10am, depending on the location of your hotel. If you are staying at Hotel Xcaret, the park will provide you with transportation. Everyone is assigned a bus and a guide. You will be with the same guide and group of ten people for the entire excursion. A mask is required on the bus at all times. A photographer will be assigned to your group and he will act as your very own hidden personal paparazzi. Bring your credit card because you will want to buy these pictures!

Insider Tip: Bring Tip money for your guide. It will be a tip well deserved. These guys go all out to make sure you have an amazing time.

Pre-Excursion

Once you are at your destination, you will be given a bag which will hold all your items including your mask. No need to bring towels because they will be provided to you during the excursion.

You are required to take a shower before entering the cenotes, to make sure that your skin is free from perfumes, creams and chemicals, which can be harmful to the environment. No sunscreen or insect repellent is allowed.

At this time, everyone will be given Mexican pastries for breakfast along with a non-alcoholic drink. Yum! Keep those water bottles at your hotel. Water is included on this excursion.

Welcome to the Jungle

This tour is in the Mayan jungle. Bring water shoes & cover ups for when you are on the bus going from cenotes to cenotes. There are four cenotes on this tour and each requires a bus ride to get to the next one.

Here all the activities that are included on this excursion.

#1 Tierra Lu’um Cenote – Rappel into a Cavern

This is when the fun starts. We started our morning rappelling into a Mayan cavern which are some of the youngest cenotes used by the Mayans for ceremonies. The only way to access this underground treasure is by rappelling. This activity is for people looking for an adventure in nature.

You can rappel the boring way like me.

Or you can be adventurous and do it upside down like my husband.

Insider Tip: All of the pictures with logos on the top were taken by the photographer.

Once everyone is in the cavern, you are permitted to swim and jump off the rocks.

This is your chance to jump straight into crystal clear blue water.

Insider Tip: Life jackets are provided on this tour. A life vest is required during all of your activities.

#2 Li-‘K Cenote – Zip-lining and Cliff Diving

This is your chance to be a kid and zip line until your heart is content. This is an open cenote and one of the oldest. When you splash into the water, this is your opportunity to enjoy the underwater garden before hopping back on the zip-line to do it all over again. It never gets old.

There are several ways you can zip-line into the refreshing cenotes.

And…of course, you can jump! Why not, you are on vacation?

After you have completed a few activities, it’s time for lunch. Yes, this lunch is included with your tour. You are able to build your own dream sandwich, which will go perfect with your authentic Mexican soup. Delish!

#3 Há Cenote – Swimming & Kayaking

In order to kayak, you must swim though the cave into a hidden cenote. The water is several shades of blue-green and I like to use the word “refreshing” when talking about cenotes. Hint hint! However, the colors of the cenotes is absolutely breathtaking and totally worth it. You are given snorkel gear during this activity, so you can take in the crystal clear waters.

Next, you get to kayak the cenote through highwalls covered in nature.

#4 Ancient Cenote – Waterslides, Zip-lines and Cliff Diving in Cenote

This is your chance to do it all. Play hard and relax in the middle of nature. You can’t get anything better then this! This cenote was an important source of water for the Mayan Indians. The Mayans believed cenotes were the entrance to the underground world. Now, it’s the entrance to our all natural playground.

Xenotes Oasis Maya Cenote Tour by Xcaret

What is Xenotes Like?

Xenotes is an all-inclusive tour offered by Grupo Xcaret, which brings you to four different Riviera Maya cenotes along the famous “Ruta de los Cenotes” near Puerto Morelos.

ℹ️ Previously called Xenotes Oasis Maya, Xenotes is now known as Xenotes, Enigmatic Waters Tour by Xcaret .

Xcaret arranges a circuit of different activities at each of the four private cenotes that includes kayaking, swimming, rappelling, and ziplining.

Each cenote on the tour is a different type, letting you experience the natural wonders of Mexico’s Riviera Maya actively.

Beautiful Ha Cenote treats you to a semi-open cenote with hanging vegetation and beautiful underground gardens for snorkeling and kayaking. Water ziplines happen over Iik Cenote , where you can also cliff jump over 20 feet high.

You’ll try assisted rappelling at Lu’um Cenote , a cavern cenote with million-year-old formations. K’aak’ Cenote offers an adrenaline rush with water slides, ziplines, and cliff jumps.

And best of all, this full day all inclusive Xenotes tour includes round-trip transportation, a continental breakfast, deli lunch, drinks, and some alcohol.

Xenotes Mexico Review

Where is Xenotes Located?

Xenotes cenote park is located in Puerto Morelos , Mexico, about 1 hour north of Playa del Carmen.

Driving times from nearby destinations are as follows:

  • Playa del Carmen to Xenotes : 1 hour
  • Tulum to Xenotes : 2 hours
  • Cancun to Xenotes : 1 hour 15 minutes

Xenotes Map

How Do You Pronounce Xenotes?

Xenotes is pronounced “Shay-know-tays”.  The key to pronouncing the Xcaret names correctly is to pronounce the X as either an “Ish” or a “Sh” sound.

Who is Xenotes Suited For?

If you’re looking for a unique outdoor adventure while visiting Riviera Maya, Mexico, the Xenotes water tour will be perfect for you.

Adventurous travelers who love adrenaline-pumping water activities and are looking for a water park experience in Riviera Maya will especially enjoy this tour.

Xenotes is also a great family-friendly activity for children ages 5 and older, though kids may have more fun if they’re a bit older.

But for both kids and adults, the Xenotes tour will be an unforgettable experience!

Xenotes

Who is Xenotes NOT Suited For?

If you do not like water activities or getting wet, then the Xenotes tour is not for you.  With so many water activities, you’ll be dripping wet the majority of the time!

You don’t have to be a strong swimmer to enjoy Xenotes as life jackets are mandatory, but you probably won’t have a good time if you are uncomfortable being in the water.

With lots of swimming, walking, and climbing involved, the tour can also be physically demanding so if you’re not able to walk or swim for long periods of time, it’s probably not the best place for you.

⚠️ There are also some important safety considerations to be aware of before booking your Xenotes tour.  Due to the nature of the activities, the Xenotes tour is not recommended for pregnant women or people that have:

  • Heart, lung, or spine conditions
  • High blood pressure

Xenotes Arrival Experience

Here’s what you can expect on the day of your Xenotes experience:

Hotel Pickup

Roundtrip transportation is included with the Xenotes tour with pickup from your hotel, resort, or designated meeting point in Playa del Carmen, Cancun, or the Riviera Maya.

The private Xenotes vans are new and comfortable and bright green in color–they can’t be missed!

During pickup, you’ll meet your driver (who will also be your tour guide), get your wristbands, and sign a liability waiver.

Xenotes Van Tour Transportation

🚨 Do you need travel insurance for Mexico? Yes! Most insurance plans in your home country will not cover incidents abroad. I recommend using Travel Insurance Master, which is a handy travel insurance marketplace where you can compare policies. Get a FREE quote by clicking here !

After you’re in the van, you’ll head to the Xenotes site and your tour guide will explain the day’s activities during the drive.

From Playa del Carmen, it takes a little over an hour to get there depending on the number of pickups.

When you’re in the van, you’ll want to get prepared for the day’s activities by putting on your water shoes and removing any watches, jewelry, or valuables.

Upon arriving at the Xenotes location, you’ll be directed to small outdoor pavilions with dining tables and bench seating.

Each cenote on the tour has these types of pavilions along with restrooms, showers, and changing rooms.

Xenotes Park Arrival

Before getting started, everyone is required to take a quick shower to remove any sunscreen, insect repellent, or chemicals that might be harmful to the cenote environment.

These are outdoor showers so be prepared for the water to be a bit cold!

Life Jackets

After showering, you’ll then put on life jackets (which are mandatory) and head to the first cenote.

Each cenote has a life jacket stand where you can select your preferred size.

Xenotes Review: Activities

Here’s a detailed look at each of the cenotes and my honest Xenotes reviews:

✅ Rating: 8/10

The first cenote we visited was the semi-open Ha’ Cenote (water), where you’ll start by kayaking down a narrow river between vertical rock walls in a double kayak, getting to see lush vegetation, overgrown trees, and a beautiful island in the center of the cenote.

Kayaking at Xenotes Ha Cenote

Then you’ll head to the other side of the cenote via an underground cave entrance. Snorkeling masks are provided, and you’ll be able to see tiny cenote fish, small catfish, and lily pads.

Overall, I enjoyed kayaking the most–it was a very beautiful and relaxing experience and not too difficult to navigate.  I only wish it had lasted longer!

The snorkeling part of the cenote was a beautiful place with picturesque lily pads, but the visibility underwater wasn’t the best so you could really only see some tiny fish at the surface.

Xenotes Review Snorkeling

✅ Rating: 9/10

Iik Cenote (wind) is a large, open cenote where you’ll get to go flying through the air on overwater ziplines.

The zip lines are divided into two sides, each with two zip lines. You can choose to go on a seated hammock or hang from a monkey bar.

I personally enjoyed the seated hammock because it was more comfortable and there were some funny positions to choose from including the Spiderman, Superman, Princess, and my personal favorite–Miley Cyrus’s Wrecking Ball!

Each person gets to go on the water ziplines three times, so you can really get a good feel for it. And if you’re feeling brave, you can also choose to cliff jump from the zipline platform at a height of around 20 feet.

Overall, I had a blast at Iik Cenote and really enjoyed the water ziplines–they were thrilling but not too scary and it was very comical watching everyone trying to perfect their pose!

Iik Cenote Xenotes Tour Review

Lu’um Cenote (earth) is a deep underground cavern cenote unlike any other, with its hanging tree roots and cascading vegetation.

You’ll put on a harness and helmet before climbing to the top of a wooden platform.  Then you’ll try assisted rappelling down under the earth and into the cold cenote waters.

You can even choose to rappel upside down if you wish. With the harness and help of the guides, it feels very safe and secure–I only wished it had lasted longer!

Rappelling at Luum Cenote Xenotes Tour

Lu’um is the deepest cenote you’ll visit on the tour so the water is extremely cold , but it’s such an exhilarating experience. You’ll also get to jump from a small ledge into the refreshing waters below.

Overall, Lu’um Cenote was probably the most unique cenote you’ll visit on the tour–the hanging tree roots are really spectacular.  And getting to rappel directly into the water is such a rush!

Luum Cenote at Xenotes

K’aak’ Cenote (fire) is an open cenote with a variety of activities to keep you entertained, starting with a short water slide that shoots you out into the cenote.

Kaak Cenote at Xenotes

You can then climb back to the top for more overwater ziplines from a hanging monkey bar.

And after you drop from the ziplines, you’ll swim or inner tube for about 200 meters between stone walls where you can choose to do a cliff jump for one final rush.

Overall, Ka’ak’ Cenote was relaxing and fun with a whole circuit of activities. The water was warm and comfortable, making it the perfect place to end the day with some final jumps and splashes.

Xenotes Water Ziplines Kaak Cenote

Xenotes Review: Food and Beverage

Here’s an overview of the Xenotes food and beverage offerings:

Xenotes Breakfast

✅ Rating: 7/10

Continental breakfast is included in the tour and is available to enjoy after the first cenote.

You’ll return to the pavilion, where a light breakfast buffet will be set up with apples and pastries.  Drink options include coffee, hot chocolate, and fruit waters.

Overall, the Xenotes breakfast was pretty basic but was a nice simple treat after the first cenote.  If you prefer something more filling, you’ll definitely want to eat a heartier breakfast before leaving your hotel.

Xenotes Food Review Breakfast

Xenotes Lunch

After the third cenote, you’ll also be treated to a buffet lunch, which is a “jungle picnic”.  The Xenotes lunch buffet is basically a deli bar where you can build your own gourmet sandwiches.

The sandwich buffet includes a variety of rustic breads, deli meats, salmon, premium cheeses, and salad bar type toppings.

Additional sides include soup, tortilla chips, seasonal fruit, and chocolate brownies. A variety of drinks like soda, bottled water, wine, and beer are also available.

Overall, I was impressed with the lunch buffet at Xenotes.  Some of the toppings are probably a little more unusual than what you may be accustomed to, but you’ll still be able to build a tasty sandwich.

Plus, the wine and beer is a nice added touch!

Xenotes Jungle Picnic Lunch Buffet

Xenotes Review: Services and Amenities

Here’s an overview of the services and amenities available at Xenotes Riviera Maya:

All necessary safety equipment is provided with Xenotes tours including life jackets, kayaks and paddles, snorkel masks, harnesses, and helmets.

The use of the life jacket is mandatory for all activities and there is a life jacket stand at each cenote.

Xenotes Rappelling Safety Equipment

Restrooms, Showers, & Changing Rooms

Clean and well-maintained restrooms, showers, and changing rooms are located at each of the 4 cenotes, making it very easy to take bathroom breaks or freshen up throughout the day.

Restrooms at Xenotes

Photo Package

One of the biggest takeaways of the Xenotes tour is the photo package.  Each group will have a professional photographer that follows them around during the day taking the best high quality pictures.

While the photo package can be expensive, it’s a great way to capture your memories if you don’t have a GoPro or waterproof camera.

Plus, they’re positioned in the best vantage points to get all the best action shots from the cliff jumps and ziplines.

If you do wish to purchase your Xenotes photos, the payment can be made by cash or credit card at the end of the day.

You’ll then receive a redemption code where you can download your Xenotes pictures online.

Travelista Tip: Save money by adding the photo package ahead of time when booking your tickets online.  This is cheaper than what you’ll pay on the day of your visit.  I personally bought the photo package and thought it was worth it!

Xenotes Rappelling Activity Review

Xenotes Transportation

Round trip transportation is included in the Xenotes tour and the brightly-colored green vans are large, comfortable, and have waterproof seats.

Each group will be assigned to one van that will be used for the entire day–where you’ll drive from one cenote to the next and then back to your hotel or resort.

Since there are no lockers at Xenotes, the van will also be used to store personal belongings.  There weren’t any issues with this on my tour but it’s best not to leave any valuables just to be safe.

Xenotes Transportation

Xenotes Alternatives

If you’re looking for Xenotes alternatives, there are a few other comparable options in Riviera Maya:

Cenote Zapote

Also located along the “Ruta de los Cenotes”, Cenote Zapote is a Riviera Maya eco-park that is probably the most comparable option to the Xenotes experience.

At Cenote Zapote, you can visit 3 different types of cenotes, as well as go ziplining and biking.  It’s a very fun experience but the Xenotes tour has more to offer in terms of water activities.

You can read my Cenote Zapote post for all the details!

Cenote Zapote

Rio Secreto

Another option would be to visit Rio Secreto , which is an underground river system located just south of Playa del Carmen.

At the Rio Secreto attraction, you can swim and trek through these underground caves, as well as go biking and rappelling.

This impressive network of underground rivers and caverns feels very natural and untouched, but does not offer quite as many activities as Xenotes.

You can read more my full Rio Secreto review for all the details!

Rio Secreto

Another comparable option from Grupo Xcaret would be Xplor , which is an adventure park known for having the best ziplining in Playa del Carmen , as well as amphibious vehicles, and a stalactite river swim.

Xplor will give you an adrenaline rush with its variety of land, water, and adventure activities but overall feels more commercialized than the Xenotes park in the heart of the jungle.

You can read my full Xplor review for all the details!

And if you’re interested in visiting more than one of the Xcaret parks, you can create your own package and get an automatic bundle discount.

Xplor Park

What to Wear to Xenotes

Below is what I would recommend wearing on the Xcaret Xenotes tour:

  • Swimsuit: Definitely wear a swimsuit as you will 100% be getting wet! I always prefer to wear a one-piece swimsuit to be most comfortable when jumping or putting on a harness, life jacket, etc.
  • Rash Guard: I would also recommend wearing a rash guard , which is a long-sleeve swim shirt to protect you from the sun and also keep you warm in the water.  The cenote temperatures can be cold (especially at Lu’um) so wear a rash guard to be the most comfortable.
  • Water Shoes: I would highly recommend wearing water shoes as I’m not sure how the tour can be done without them! You’ll be swimming, climbing up stairs, and walking over rocky jungle areas so water shoes are an absolute must to protect your feet.
  • Waterproof Shorts : I usually like to wear waterproof shorts over my swimsuit just to be a little more comfortable when you’re out of the water.  There are some covered rest areas at each cenote where you can leave your things before getting in the water.

What to Bring to Xenotes

Here are the essential items to bring to Xenotes by Xcaret:

  • GoPro or waterproof camera: Bring a GoPro or waterproof camera to capture some epic memories of the fun activities at Xenotes.  I brought my GoPro and was able to use it on all of the activities.
  • Waterproof phone pouch : If you don’t have a GoPro, then consider bringing a waterproof phone pouch to take pictures with your cell phone.  This of course should be used at your own risk but there were a few people on my tour that used one and didn’t seem to have any issues.
  • Change of Clothes : Bring an extra change of clothes to change into at the end of the day to be dry and comfortable for the long drive back to your hotel.
  • Cash or credit cards : Bring cash or credit cards to pay for the photo package and tips for the tour guides.

Tips for Visiting Xenotes

Follow these tips to make the most of your Xenotes experience:

  • Bring water shoes: Water shoes are an absolute must when visiting Xenotes and you will be suffering if you don’t bring them! You can pick up a pair on Amazon here .
  • Be prepared to be unplugged: The Xenotes cenote park is located in the middle of the jungle where there is no internet or cell phone service.  Be prepared to be unplugged and be sure to attend to any important matters before arriving.
  • Buy the photo package ahead of time: You’ll save money if you add the photo package ahead of time when purchasing your tickets online.  Consider this if you think you’ll want the Xenotes photos of your visit–they really do give you the best action shots!
  • Don’t wear any sunscreen: Sunscreen (even biodegradable) is prohibited at Xenotes to protect the ecosystem of the cenotes. You’ll be required to shower before entering the first cenote so don’t even bother putting on any sunscreen.  Most of the cenotes are pretty shady but if you’re concerned about sun protection, then consider wearing a rash guard .
  • Don’t bring a towel: Towels are provided at Xenotes so you won’t need to bring one.  You will be getting wet at each cenote so it’s best to wait and use your towel at the end of the tour.
  • Don’t bring valuables : There are no lockers at Xenotes and all personal belongings will be left in the group van.  It’s best not to bring any valuables and only bring only what you need for the day’s activities.

Here are the answers to the most frequently asked questions about Xenotes Riviera Maya:

The Xenotes tour is available every Monday-Saturday (closed Sundays).

The average water temperature of the cenotes is 75-78°F throughout the year.

Yes, food is included at Xenotes.  A continental breakfast with pastries and hot drinks is provided at the end of the first cenote.  You’ll then be treated to a lunch buffet with soft drinks, beer, and wine after the third cenote.

Xenotes Review Final Thoughts

So, is Xenotes worth it?  I honestly had a blast at Xenotes and thought it provides outstanding value for the money.

It’s just as expensive as many of the other attractions in Riviera Maya but provides a full day outdoor adventure with roundtrip transportation, food, and drinks included.

Basically, they do all of the work for you so you just have to have fun! Plus, you’ll get to experience some amazing natural cenotes, unlike anywhere else in the world.

If it’s your first time visiting Riviera Maya and you want to see some cenotes, then I would highly recommend Xenotes.  It’s really the most hassle-free option to experience a variety of different cenotes in one day.

Plus, what I loved about Xenotes is that you’ll be in a smaller group and the park feels much more natural and less commercialized than any of the other Xcaret adventure parks.

So what do you think, are you ready to book your ticket to Xenotes?!

Tour Review: Xenotes Enigmatic Waters by Xcaret

Quite possibly the best way to experience cenotes in the Cancún area

Some travelers go to Cancún, Mexico and spend all day, every day at the beach. And while there’s nothing wrong with that if that’s what you really want to do, I can’t do that everyday on vacation. After all, there are great beaches in lots of places. One thing that you can’t do (almost) anywhere else, however, is explore cenotes , natural sinkholes filled with fresh, cool water, many of which, though not all, are subterranean. They are so deep, in fact, that many of them connect with each other. Hundreds of years ago, the Mayans used cenotes for different practical purposes, but also for the offering of sacrifices.

There are thousands of cenotes in the Yucatán peninsula, and lots of them are open to the public for a small fee. Every cenote offers a somewhat different experience, and all of them are natural wonders that make you feel a little like you’re on the set of an Indiana Jones movie. In December, we had the opportunity to experience the Xenotes Enigmatic Waters Tour by Xcaret, a tour company on the Mayan Riviera that operates multiple hotels and ecological theme parks like Xcaret, Xel-Ha, and others. I’ve never had a bad experience at their parks, and hopefully I’ll get to talk about them more in later posts, but today I want to focus on their Xenotes Tour. I should mention at the outset that we didn’t have to pay for this tour, not because they gave us special privileges in exchange for this post, but because my sister-in-law, who lives in Cancún and works for an airline, received passes from someone with whom she did business.

cenotes tour xcaret

The tour began on a small but comfortable tour bus in Cancún, which picks up passengers at a couple of different spots. There were about 15 people in all on our bus, including our group of 6, which included my wife, two kids (ages 10 and 15), sister-in-law, father-in-law (age 79), and myself. The other people on our bus were from different places, including Mexico, Costa Rica, and Colombia. All very very friendly and used masks onboard. Although all of us spoke Spanish, the guides all speak fluent English, as well. In addition to our driver, our main guide was Steve, who was with us at all times, and Miguel, who was our photographer; more about him later. One thing that I appreciated about this tour is that the four cenotes we visited were only accessible to people on this tour, and our group was spaced out well between groups visiting in other buses. In other words, we had a semi-private experience, never feeling rushed.

cenotes tour xcaret

Once all passengers were on board, we headed south to the town of Puerto Morelos, which is a short distance from Cancún. Near this town is the Ruta de los Cenotes, a stretch of more than 20 miles that has a great number of cenotes in this relatively small area. On board the bus, we were offered swim shirts, swim shoes, and ecological sunblock. We bought the shirts and shoes, which we kind of liked, and they weren’t extremely expensive. We chose not to purchase the sunblock because we figured that cenotes are, generally speaking, quite shady places. You could get by without a swim shirt, as long as you have a bathing suit, but it’s not a bad idea to have one, since it can get wet but it also leaves you a bit more covered. Bringing one from home, of course, will save you money. I would say that having your own swim shoes, however, is a “must,” since you’ll be stepping on rocks and other slippery services. Falling down and getting cut would not be fun. They do provide towels for you, as well as food. It is best to leave your phone, camera, wallet, and everything else on board the bus, which is secured while you’re visiting the cenotes. “What about pictures,” you ask? That’s where your photographer comes in. You could have your own phone in a waterproof case, I suppose, but for me it wouldn’t be super practical, as I wouldn’t want to have to worry about it. Although there’s an extra charge (which will vary depending on the number of people in your group) to purchase the photographer’s digital photographs, the pictures they take are much better than what I could take, and I could just focus on enjoying the surroundings and having fun with my family. All of the pictures on this post come from our group photographer, who showed us along the way the shots he was taking.

cenotes tour xcaret

In all, we made four different stops, each of which are examples of the four different types of cenotes that exist. At each stop we made, there were clean bathrooms and showers, as well as places to put on our (mandatory) life vests. At our first stop, we walked a short path through a beautiful jungle until we got to a place where we could kayak through an open air cenote, with high walls and beautiful vegetation all around. Although we didn’t see it, some people in our group saw a monkey. It was really tranquil. There was a second cenote at this first stop, this one was mostly in a cavern, where we could put on masks (provided for us) and swim around. After our swim, they had a nice snack waiting for us that, as I recall, included fruit and drinks, including hot chocolate, which you wouldn’t expect to drink in a tropical climate, but it was actually really good.

cenotes tour xcaret

Our second stop on the tour was maybe the most fun, because we were able to zip line over the cenote. These zip lines were not the kind that required you to put on a harness or helmet, but it was more like a swing that you could sit in until you eventually landed in the water. Steve gave us some different options for using the zip line, including hanging from a bar, going face down like Super Man, or hanging upside down like Spider Man. We had time to try this several different times, which was awesome. There was also a high ledge from which you could jump in. I didn’t expect to do it, but I did, as did both of my kids. It was pretty high and definitely scary, but it was worth it.

cenotes tour xcaret

The third cenote we stopped at was probably my favorite in terms of its beauty. It’s quite long with high walls on both sides, and it includes a few different waterfalls. After going down a short but winding waterslide, we took another zip line, which was really long. I didn’t know if I would be able to do this one, since I’m quite heavy, and this one required us to hold on to a bar. It is surprisingly easy, though. Once you let go and fall in the water, you have to swim to the other side, which is slow going with a life vest on, but it’s so gorgeous that you won’t want to get to the other side. Once you’re there and you get out, there’s another opportunity to step off a ledge into the water. This one wasn’t as high as the one at the previous cenote, and my kids and I were able to jump off together. Again, it was awesome. There’s no other way to describe it. After getting out of the water, there was a nice buffet ready for us. There were really great options available, including desserts and drinks. Even alcohol was included, if anyone wanted it. I should say that while we were visiting this cenote, we saw an American man who was with a different group. From what I gathered, he didn’t let go of the zip line early enough, so when he got to the end, his face hit the bar, giving him a very bloody nose. Despite his pain, he was in good spirits, but I mention this because it really is important to listen to what the guides tell you.

cenotes tour xcaret

The fourth and final cenote stop we made was the favorite of many people in our group. It was almost entirely subterranean, with just a small opening above. It was through this small opening that we entered the cenote. They gave us a helmet and harness, took us on a high platform, and lowered us slowly through the hole, into the water below, by sturdy ropes. Once there, we could swim, and there were also natural formations from which we could jump into the water multiple times. I could see some fish in the water here, as well as a bat or two up above, but they left us alone. This might be a good place to mention that while most (if not all) people in your group, regardless of age, should be able to participate in the vast majority of the activities, many of the experiences, like zip lining or jumping from ledges, are totally optional. Nobody makes you do anything.

cenotes tour xcaret

I honestly have nothing negative to say about this whole experience. Of course, if you’re not fortunate to have free passes fall in your lap, like we were, it’s not an inexpensive trip. At the time I’m writing this, the tour website shows prices of about $117 per adult and $59 per child (6 to 11 years of age). However, if you are doing other activities through the Xcaret group, they will probably offer you package deals for other experiences as well. I get the feeling that different visitors pay different prices depending on the other activities they participate in. Again, your tour can cost more after it starts if you purchase a swim shirt, swim shoes, or the picture package. The pictures are definitely worth the extra expense, since it’s an environment in which it would be difficult if not impossible for you to take quality pictures and do the activities at the same time without losing your phone or camera in the process. The experience will take most of an entire day, but again, it’s a day that your family will never forget, like a simple day on the beach sipping margaritas might be.

Have you ever visited a cenote? Let us know about your experience in the comments below. And if you enjoyed this post, please consider sharing it on your favorite social media. ¡Gracias!

Underground Oases — An Adventurous Tour of Cenotes in Mexico

By Author Laura Longwell

Posted on Last updated: August 25, 2023

“Embrace nature, not snakes!”

The warning came from just over my shoulder from my tour guide, Eduardo. Treading water, all the participants in our group of 10 quickly glanced around the sleek surface hoping not to see any serpentine figures headed our way. With a fast perusal of the area, we breathed a sigh of relief. We were already neck-deep and weren’t looking for any surprises. At least not of the animal variety.

We were mid-way through our first experience in a cenote when the warning came. We had already jumped from a short zip line to the cool water below and were up for almost anything. Tiny catfish circled our toes as we made our way to the next stop at the opposite side of the large cenote sinkhole–an eight-foot-high ledge from which we willingly hurled ourselves, diving and flipping on the way down.

Plants and vines on the walls of a cenote

This first brilliant stop was only one of four during our day visiting the cenotes near Cancun . Exploring cenotes–whether swimming, diving, or snorkeling–is one of the more popular activities in the Riviera Maya area of Mexico.

These giant natural pits are created over time when limestone bedrock collapses to expose the groundwater below. There are three types of cenotes–open, semi-open, and cave–all of which we visited on our tour with Xenotes Oasis Maya.

Stalactites above the water of the semi-open cenote

Unlike many of the other offerings from Grupo Xcaret (Xcaret, Xel-Ha, Xenses, and Xplor), the Xenotes Oasis Maya experience is not a park. Instead, it is a tour that includes stops at four different cenotes along the Ruta de los Cenotes, a road that stretches inland from Puerto Morelos and connects many cenotes.

A couple of stops on the cenote tour are practically within walking distance of each other, and a couple require a brief drive down a rather bumpy road that offers a “Mayan massage.” Each stop comes with restrooms and a snack or drinks, so you stay super comfortable while exploring the natural environment of Mexico.

Activities on the Xenotes Oasis Maya Tour

Across the four stops, there are four main activities.

Both of the open cenotes offer the opportunity for zip lining. And lots of it! There are two options, both of which land you squarely in the refreshing water below. The first is a traditional bar on cables strung across the cenote. You hang on as you quickly zip across the lines just before dropping off into the water.

The second is a swing that lets you glide easily toward the surface. Both are a lot of fun, and our group discovered new ways to hang, flip, and sail our way down.

Woman zip lining into the water on a Xenotes Oasis Maya tour

Groups head out in a two-man kayak for a short but beautiful ride through a cenote with sheer walls drenched with lush vegetation. As a relatively novice kayaker (only one somewhat painful experience under my belt), this was a perfect spot to refresh my skills without currents or other challenges.

People kayaking with cliffs on both sides of the water

Swim and Snorkel

Swimming at each of the cenotes gives you a nice break from the heat of the Mexican sun. There is even an opportunity to snorkel in the semi-open cenote. Because the cenotes are full of freshwater, you won’t see the type of fish you might expect in the ocean.

Instead, there are only small catfish and turtles along with some lily pads and rock formations. If that’s not impressive enough, take off your mask and float along while gazing at the unique, above-water scenery.

How do you get through the small hole in the roof of a cave cenote? Rappelling, of course. If you’ve never tried rappelling before, which I hadn’t, the tour offers a controlled opportunity to try this intimidating-looking activity. The employees have control of the ropes and harnesses the whole time, so you descend safely and easily into the (pretty darn cold) water below. You can even go upside-down, if you want to.

People rappelling into a cave cenote near Cancun

There are two main options for visiting cenotes near Cancun. One is to rent a car and explore the Ruta de los Cenotes on your own (cell-phone based apps/GPS can be limited in this area). The other is to go with a tour like Xenotes Oasis Maya.

Normally, we would probably opt for doing it on our own. But sometimes there is something so great about not needing to arrange a rental car or worry about where you’re going, what you’re going to do when you get there, or where you’re going to eat. With this tour, everything is provided and the experience is easy, fun, and adventurous.

A regular-priced ticket costs $130 for adults (age 12 and older) and $97.50 for children (age 6 to 11). You can save substantially by booking your ticket online and by booking tickets at other Grupo Xcaret attractions .

The price includes:

  • Coffee, soft drink, sweet breads, and fruit
  • Lunch of vegetable soup, deli meats and cheeses, breads, salads, wine, and beer
  • Life jacket, snorkel equipment, and rappel gear

More Xcaret attractions

When people are debating what to do near Cancun and Playa del Carmen, they are often considering visiting cenotes and/or nearby theme parks in the Grupo Xcaret. We’ve been fortunate to visit Xcaret, Xel-Ha, Xplor, and Xenses. For (much) more detail, you can read our reviews of the other parks in these articles:

  • Xcaret and Xel-Ha

We are headed to Occidental in 2 weeks. We plan to do the Xenotes tour. Thanks for the review. We have already done the Xplor park on a cruise excursion last year. What I am wondering is what your recommendation would be about taking a day to attend Xcaret park as well? We want some good snorkeling. But have already experienced ziplines and some cave swimming at Xplor, which we thoroughly enjoyed. Plus we will be getting a fun cenotes tour. Should we spend the extra money to do Xcaret park or will we have a good taste of it with the Xenotes tour, Occidental resort and Xplor Park last year?

I loved Xplor and Xenotes, and I think you'll really enjoy the upcoming tour since you liked Xplor. Xcaret has a lot to offer, but I wouldn't really recommend it as a snorkel spot, and you will have already had a taste of the underground rivers that are there. For the time and money you would spend at Xcaret, I think you might be disappointed. I would suggest seeing if you could take a snorkel tour from Playa del Carmen or -- better yet -- take a day trip to Cozumel. The ferry is about 40 minutes. We dove with a shop there called Dive with Martin, which we highly recommend, and they have lots of options for snorkel tours on their website. (You are REALLY making me wish I were in Mexico right now.) Have a great time.

What do you mean that GPS doesn't work in "rent a car and explore the Ruta de los Cenotes on your own (GPS doesn’t work in this area)"?

GPS works everywhere with a view of the sky. Google Maps has complete coverage of the Riviera Maya.

Lance Longwell

Tuesday 5th of November 2019

Yes, you are correct. SATELLITE GPS does work everywhere. We should have been more specific. Mobile phone, app-based mapping software is reliant on cellular service, which can be spotty and limited on the Ruta de los Cenotes.

How fun! I've been to Cancun once before, but never made it to the cenotes. If I return one day, I'll definitely be sure to check them out.

I SO wanna do this! You've just added another site to my "must-do" travel list. Thanks for the inspiration.

It was the top thing I wanted to do in Mexico (other than eat all the tacos, of course) and did not disappoint! I hope you get there soon!

What are cenotes?

The word cenote comes from the anciente language dzonot , which means cavern with water. Cenotes were sacred places for the ancient people, known as symbols of life and death because while they provided fresh water, it was believed that they were the entrance to the underworld.

The Yucatan Peninsula

There are between 7,000 and 8,000 cenotes. Recent discoveries confirm that many of them are interconnected below the surface, forming a vast underground river system. Scuba divers have found human remains, as well jewelry, bones, and pottery dating back to thousands of years ago.

cenotes tour xcaret

The Chichén Itzá Cenote

The mysterious cenote within the Chichén Itzá archaeological site has been studied over the past decades. There have been several archaeological scuba divings, and they discovered pottery, gold and jade objects, and even bones! The general agreement among historians is that it was a place for human sacrifices. There is also the theory that the Pyramid of Kukulcan architecture is due to the cenote location as the entrance of the underworld where the Feathered Serpent descends each equinox.

Zací Cenote

It's one of the largest cenotes in Yucatan and is in downtown Valladolid. The Zaci Cenote is where the tragic love between Zac-Nicté and Hul-Kin took place, a love story that you must learn when visiting it.

Ik Kil Sacred Blue Cenote

It is 2 mi (3 km) from Chichén Itzá. This open cenote was sacred for ancient inhabitants, and only kings had access to it .
