The Stations of the Cross is something to see, and its last stop is in the Calvary Hill. There's 3 crosses there, the center is painted gold while the two others flanking it are in silver.

compostela cebu tourist attractions

St. James the Apostle Parish (Sr. Santiago de Apostol) is the oldest structure standing in Compostela. It was built in 1866. Fr. Jose Alonzo suggested the place to be called Compostela after Santiago de Compostela in northwest Spain’s Galicia region, where St. James came from.  In July 2007, Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal declared the church as an Archdiocesan Shrine. The patron saint's Feast is held in the month of July annually. They call it “Kiseyo (Cheese) Festival” showcasing the pride of Compostela – their dairy products -- as well as honoring St. James the Apostle.

There are in fact numerous waterfalls in Compostela Valley, being a landlocked province surrounded with gold-rich mountains. Awao Falls in the town of Monkayo is one of, if not, the grandest of them all.

Tucked in the remote barangay of the same name, Awao Falls is Monkayo’s prized attraction. It features three layers of cascades, rumor has it that there is even fourth!

The first tier is the icon of Awao Falls. Commonly called as Falls 1, it is a towering curtain of cascading water dropping to a height of approximately 80 feet into a shallow and rocky catch basin. The water cascades on a rough and accented wall creating numerous droplets. Truly a majestic natural canvas!  Read More:  https://www.lakwatsero.com/spots/awao-falls-the-prized-attraction-of-monkayo-compostela-valley/#sthash.Tv6I5T0Q.dpbs

Lake Leonard

compostela cebu tourist attractions

It was the serene view of Lake Leonard that welcomed us as we got there. The waters were at rest so still that the verdant foliage on the sides beautifully reflected on the mirror lake. Water lilies and lotus abound the waters. Fish cages and tilapia pens abound on the side. There were locals fishing in the middle of the lake using their bamboo raft.

I noticed that Lake Leonard is much loved by locals. It is their favorite place to relax and unwind. There were picnic goers when we arrived there enjoying the serene feel of the lake. Some kids enjoyed grilling their fresh catch on the side. There were groups of families too relishing their weekend picnic by lake. Mainit Sulfuric Hot Spring

compostela cebu tourist attractions

When we got to Mainit Sulfuric Hot spring, it was the steaming view of the cascading waters that first took my interest. It was a new sight to me seeing hot steaming waters freely flowing from different geological formations.

In my desire to experience it first hand, I rushed to the hot waterfall base only to realize the waters were really hot. I had to soak my feet first in the gushing warm waters for couple of minutes for them to adjust with the temperature. When done, I ran to the cascading waters trying to test if I can brave its warmness. To my dismay, it is really hot. I told myself to wait until its dusk so it won’t be that boiling. And so I contented going around scrutinizing every inch of this place that was a new sight to my eyes.  Read More:  http://thetravelteller.com/macos-mainit-sulfuric-hot-spring-one-unique-destination-to-visit/

White Peak / Mt. Pandadagsaan

compostela cebu tourist attractions

This is White Peak, also known as Mount Pandadagsaan, in Barangay Andap, New Bataan, in the province of Compostela Valley. It has been called as such by local mountaineers because of the limestone embedded on its rocky west face which, when hit by sunlight, gives an almost sparkling, crystal-like towering appearance as contrasted to the thick green moss that surround it. With an elevation of 8, 878 feet above sea level, its cold temperature could range from 3 to 1 degrees centigrade and at times can drop to below zero. The mountain is the 3rd highest peak in Davao Region and ranked 13th in the Philippines. It is considered by Philippine mountaineers as a much difficult climb than Mount Apo, the country’s highest mountain peak, hence, first time would-be climbers are not allowed for safety reasons.  Read More:  http://davaocitybybattad.blogspot.com/2012/06/white-peak.html

Compostela Valley: Where Beautiful Caves Captivate You

Compostela Valley: Where Beautiful Caves Captivate You

Compostela Valley, an expanse that was once part of Davao del Norte, is a fascinating province that abounds with alluring landscapes and varying mountainous terrains. Tucked in the southeastern part of Mindanao, this place is not only home of the country’s gold mining industry but also of some of the Philippines’ most striking caves that the adventurous ones continue to visit and admire.

What are the wonderful attractions in Compostela Valley?

Because of its popularity with caverns, Compostela Valley has initiated the annual Cave Eco-Adventure which happens from November 1 to November 3. This three-day activity includes exploration of four of the magnificent caves in the province. Imagine going through tight spaces, crawling through mystifying passages, walking on wet cave floors, rappelling through cascading waterfalls, dodging from bats and other peculiar creatures, and getting amazed with natural formations of stalagmites and stalactites waiting to be revealed inside claustrophobic, underground wonders.

Where to start?

sanvicente

The potholing is usually based in Barangay San Vicente in the Municipality of Nabunturan. You will be taken to the first cave which immediately brings you to a 60-feet drop entrance, a truly exciting start for adventure seekers. This cave is called the sinking cave and those who enter it are required to take extra caution to avoid any mishap. The next cave is a visually appealing one, letting your eyes feast on stalactites that look like edible popcorn. Who wouldn’t be amazed with such natural beauty?

The third cave, on the other hand, offers a 30-foot descent that adrenaline-hungry spelunkers will surely be happy about. Take note, however, that this space is known to be filled with guano , the collected dung of cave bats so do not wonder if you end up getting brown and dirty once you get out of the cave.

Lastly, the fourth cave will welcome you with a beautiful limestone formation and its two pools of water. Keep a watchful eye when in any of the pools for you might encounter fresh water fish and even crabs who have found a home in the underground water pond.

Travelling while learning

Aside from the adrenaline-rushing spelunking activities being offered, the Cave Eco-Adventure also aims to educate the attendees with cave preservation. The organizers have included some seminars and talks that promote interest and protection of the caves and their natural contents. In these settings, those interested in speleology will have the chance to expand their knowledge on the science, study, and exploration of Philippine caverns. Of course, fellowship among the participants is also expected, making the circle of the country’s cavers wider, allowing more connections among spelunking enthusiasts.

What else is there in Compostela Valley?

Malumagpak

If you have extra days at your hands, you can further explore Compostela Valley and discover more of what it has to offer. You can choose to explore the mountains and waterfalls that abound. If you want to descend from the highlands and go coastal, why not visit the islands of Kopiat and Lunod? The former is known for its fine, white sands and rich underwater life while the latter is popular as an eco-tourism park. Lunod Island also becomes magical at night as the entire place is illuminated with thousands of fireflies.

Exciting adventure awaits you!

There are many other activities that you can enjoy when you go this new province in southeastern Mindanao. Being a budding tourism destination, you can expect pristine and unspoiled attractions that only a few of the tourists have discovered yet. So if you want to be one of the first to enjoy the beauty of Compostela Valley, board an airplane from Manila, Cebu, or other major cities and fly to Davao International Airport. Once you land, take a two-hour bus ride to the town of Nabunturan and get your adventure face on. See you there!
