Missions Trips for Adults

Launch Point offers the perfect blend of adventure and spiritual growth for adults seeking to make a difference. You’ll have opportunities to explore a new destination, meet new people, and bring Christ to those who need him. Travel with us to an underdeveloped region of the globe, and work alongside locals to improve the community’s quality of life. You’ll be amazed at what God’s servants can achieve when they come together as a team.

All About Missions Trips

Adult missions trips offer many benefits for those who take them, including networking opportunities, personal growth, and career exploration. If you feel God calling you to help different parts of the world, an adult missions trip may be the perfect option for you. Adult missions trips often involve some form of service work, such as building homes or working in orphanages, and they often take place in developing countries or areas affected by natural disasters.

HOW TO CHOOSE A MISSION TRIPS

Adult missions trips provide opportunities to serve others while growing your personal faith. However, with so many options out there, deciding what trip fits you best can be challenging. Here are a few factors to consider as you choose an area to serve:

  • The length of the trip : Adult missions trips vary in length from a few days to several weeks. Make sure you choose a trip that fits your schedule and commitments.
  • The cost of the trip : Adult missions trips also vary widely in cost. Some trips may be free or only require a small donation, while others may cost several thousand dollars. Make sure you consider the cost of the trip and your needs for support before choosing your destination. Family, friends, and fellow church goers often provide support for missionaries needing help.
  • The location of the trip : AWBE offers trips all over the world. Choose a location that interests you and that you feel comfortable traveling to for a period of time. Talk with people who have been there, and research the local customs and mannerisms of indigenous people to help you develop an idea of what to expect.
  • The type of work you’ll be doing : Adult missions trips typically involve doing some sort of service work, such as building homes, working in a soup kitchen, or teaching English. Be sure to choose a trip that matches your skills and interests.

Can Adult Missions Trips Have a Long-Term Impact?

Undoubtedly, adult missions trips can create profoundly lasting impacts for missionaries and recipients. In fact, many people who go on mission trips say that the experience changed their lives forever. Here are just a few ways that missions trips can have a lasting impact:

  • Missions Trips Provide a Unique Opportunity to Serve Others – While there are many ways to serve others, adult missions trips provide unique and life-changing experiences. Not only are you providing physical assistance to those in need, but you’ll also offer emotional and spiritual support for God’s suffering children, which impacts both you and the community you choose to serve.
  • Missions Trips Can Help You Form Lasting Relationships – Meeting new people and forming lasting relationships commonly follow missionaries who set out on these trips. God uses all forms and backgrounds to engage people that wouldn’t have a chance to meet him otherwise. Let God use your gifts to reach the fallen, hurt, and forlorn, and many times they’ll reach back into you!
  • Missions Trips Can Be Life-Changing – Many people who go on adult missions trips find their lives change for the better. These trips often help broaden their horizons and increase their understanding of other cultures. After all, the greatest commission asks us to love our neighbors as we love ourselves.

How To Prepare For a Missions Trip

Adult mission trip can alter the way you see the world forever. If you plan to go on an adult mission trip, there are a few things you need to do in order to make sure that your experience engages you and provides positive and productive outcomes. Use the three tips below to help you discern the purposes and outcomes you’d like to see on your missions trip:

  • Do Your Research – Before you go on a missions trip, do your research and learn as much as you can about the country or region you will be visiting. Cultures and mannerisms outside of America often shock visitors, but knowing what you’re walking into can help you make a lasting difference.
  • Learn Some Key Phrases – Learning basic introductions and responses will help you communicate with the people you meet during your stay. Even if you only know a few phrases, taking an interest in the culture of those around you goes a long way when making connections.
  • Have Realistic Expectations – Understanding that there may be culture shock and that things may not always go according to plan. Be prepared for anything and remember to be flexible. God’s plan doesn’t always look like ours, but he uses unique situations and people to reach the lost.

Why Launch Point ?

Create connections with people and cultures in unique and authentic ways! You’ll see the world in a whole new light and leave behind a lasting impact on the communities you serve.

When you go on a missions trip with Launch Point, not only are you making a difference in the world, but you’re also building lifelong friendships and discovering opportunities God gives you. As Christians, we believe that when we serve others, we all benefit. Join us on this journey of service and see for yourself how life-changing it can be.

Serving Missionaries through Biblical Counseling

  •   December 8, 2017
  • Biblical Counseling , Loneliness , Missionaries , Missions , Multi-Cultural Ministry , Multi-Ethnic Ministry , Sacrifice

Chris and Julie always had a heart for missions work. They met in a graduate program with a focus on missions. A fast-forward look at their life reveals the following. Soon after they were married their church affirmed their call to serve as long-term missionaries, they were connected with a sending organization, support was raised, plans were set, and they arranged their new home in a country that had once only occupied their thoughts and prayers. Once there, they enjoyed getting to know the others serving on the same team and were grateful for new friendships. The first year they were excited to spend most of their time learning the language and culture. The language was harder for Chris than Julie and, to his disappointment, he quickly began to depend on her for day-to-day interactions with people.

The Struggle

By then end of the first year they recognized some personality differences on the team, and while this was not discouraging it was challenging. The friendships they shared there were not as close as friends they had left behind, and an underlying spirit of competition from other team members was felt by both Chris and Julie.

Their second and third year on the field were difficult. Chris’s father suffered a heart attack, and he wrestled with being so far away when his parents could really use extra support. His father began to recover but then in year three Chris and Julie had their first baby, a little boy born with significant medical needs. The country they were in had good medical care for their son’s needs but the emotional and physical strain began to take a toll on both of them. In the midst of all this was the work of the mission as well as the continued need to raise support. This is a snapshot of many missionaries today.

The life of a missionary and/or missionary family is full of sacrifice. Those called to the mission field leave all that is familiar to begin a new life in a country foreign and unknown to them. The challenges they encounter impact themselves and their family as a whole. Those called to be missionaries give fully to the work and often their only connections are other missionary families who are facing the same struggles.

Mixed Blessings

Missionaries understand what it means to sacrifice for the sake of the gospel. They also understand the incredible joy of being a part of kingdom work in places where the gospel is not understood or perhaps completely unheard. The blessing of participating in the seed-planting of the gospel in lands barren of truth provides rich faith-building moments. The encouragement of seeing people come to faith in Jesus is a lasting joy to those serving as missionaries.

Needed Care

However, it can be a lonely work and the need for emotional support and spiritual comfort are great. More and more sending agencies are amping up the focus on member care to include biblical counseling. Including regular counseling in member care as a norm rather than something that is employed only when crisis happens is a growing trend in sending organizations. A focus on how to help individuals and families make adjustments is growing. Without such care, those serving as missionaries can encounter overwhelming struggle or burnout, leading to ineffective service or possibly leaving the mission work all together.

The recognition of this need helps to give missionaries practical and biblical ways to work through the strain that comes from transplanting to a new location where most of your support is miles, if not oceans, away.

How to Help

So what does this mean for biblical counselors? Expanding training that focuses on care for missionaries and their families is important. This means learning more about the specific struggles faced on the mission field. Missionaries need help navigating the loneliness that can accompany them in unexpected ways. Maintaining the friendships left behind while on the field can also be a struggle they face. Help with relationships within the team is always a big need as well. Spouses carry great burdens when there is little to no lines of separation between work and family. Parents need help parenting third-culture kids who struggle to know where they belong. Included in all this is the unique pressure of raising support. All this takes place while seeking to make gospel connections with the people they are serving. Counselors who are equipped with a better understanding of these struggles can offer an empathetic place to work through these pressures. This help can encourage missionaries toward a hope-filled perspective of their calling even in the midst of struggle. It can be a lifeline that puts fuel in their hearts to help them continue to serve well.

Another way biblical counselors can help is to be open to serve on short term mission trips specifically to support the mission team with biblical counseling. Many sending organizations have training conferences for their missionaries to attend where they also provide counseling support or workshops taught by those trained in biblical counseling. Other organizations now have openings for counselors to serve in member care online or as an onsite counselor team member. The need for biblical counselors who have an understanding of the struggles missionaries face is growing as needs come more and more to the surface.

Finally, pray for those serving. Knowing someone is praying for the specific needs they face can be a great source of encouragement to those serving on the mission field.

We are deeply committed to extending the church’s ministry beyond the walls of our campus buildings. Our team creates ongoing practical opportunities for our members, guests and friends to join Jesus in his redemptive, restorative work in communities locally, nationally and globally. We are thrilled that you’re interested in learning more about our missions method, affiliates and partners, and ways you can serve. We’d love to have you join us!

OUR COMMITMENT

Crossroads Missions’ missions & outreach work is guided by four promises. When undertaking any missions and outreach work we:

We go outside the walls of our church buildings beyond the comfort zone of our church friends and small groups, and towards the mess to love those who are hurting and without hope.

We Listen...

We listen by setting aside agendas… we don’t desire to fix or change people, we want love them; because we want to know people and we want them to know us, and focusing on what we have in common, not on our differences.

We Share...

We share our time, our talents, resources, and most importantly… Jesus!

We stay where God plants us, focused on “life on life,” long-term relationships, and persevere, choosing not to leave when things get difficult, and patient, continuing to love and trust God for results.

These ministries are separate entities from Crossroads Church, but are guided and influenced by Crossroads Missions staff and leaders.

CROSSROADS RECOVERY

Crossroads loves Jesus’ heart for broken, hurting people. People struggling with addiction need to know that freedom is found in an intimate and growing relationship with Jesus Christ. That belief compelled us to establish Crossroads Recovery — a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that serves as an umbrella organization for addiction recovery ministries. Justin’s Place is the first local affiliate ministry for Crossroads Community Church under Crossroads Recovery. Justin’s Place has been serving men who struggle with drug and alcohol addiction since 2015.

NicaWorks! was founded in 2008 by Crossroads Missions Pastor Tim Adams and his wife Katie. As the ministry’s first partner church, Crossroads has been instrumental in building the organization’s work to create tangible hope and growth in impoverished communities across Nicaragua, the second-poorest country in the Western hemisphere. NicaWorks! helps Nicaraguans break the cycle of intergenerational poverty by providing real opportunities for spiritual, economic, social, and educational growth. The ministry employs nine Nicaraguans who work full time with local leaders on initiatives to address the root causes of poverty by providing increased access to education, employment, healthcare, agricultural training and spiritual discipleship.

SERVING OPPORTUNITIES

Regional & global opportunities.

At Crossroads we view missions trips as an opportunity for people to see, learn and support what God is doing through our ministry affiliates and partners year-round. Our trips are designed to help you develop relationships with both the staff and people living in communities we care deeply about and give you an opportunity to enjoy giving your time, attention and gifts in a new place. Our ministry philosophy is to invest deeply in a handful of countries through long-term, strategic partnerships that are doing important, community-based work; we hope our missions trips experience both shows you how Crossroads is impacting the world around the year and creates a desire to be meaningfully involved beyond your trip.

counseling mission trips

Three to four times a year Crossroads, along with men in our residential recovery program (Justin’s Place), travels to War, WV (McDowell County) to visit Rick and Mary Smith who run "A New Beginning", one of Crossroads' partner ministries. While visiting you will get to know Rick and Mary, participate in community bible studies and events as well as get to know members of the community. Although this is not a project-based trip there may be an opportunity to help Rick and Mary with some ongoing upkeep projects when needed.

Mission Trips for Adults: Discovering Your Path to Purpose

counseling mission trips

The question, “Can I go on a mission trip?” is one that many Christian adults find themselves asking. Whether you’re seeking a new adventure, wanting to give back to communities in need, or looking for a deeper spiritual connection, mission trips for adults offer an array of opportunities to draw closer to Christ and to serve Him.

Mission Trips Are for Adults: Not Just for Youth

The perception that mission trips are primarily for young people is a misconception. While they offer invaluable opportunities for young individuals to gain unique experiences, mission trips are equally impactful for adults. Adults bring a wealth of life experience, skills, and knowledge to these trips, making their contributions particularly valuable.

Unique Ways You Can Contribute to a Mission Trip as an Adult

1. leadership and mentorship:.

Adults often serve as natural leaders on mission trips. They can provide guidance, support, and mentorship to younger participants, helping them navigate unfamiliar situations and making the mission trip a more enriching experience for everyone.

2. Specialized Skills:

Many adults bring technical skills to mission trips, such as medical expertise, construction knowledge, teaching experience, or counseling skills. These skills can be invaluable in addressing the unique needs of the community being served.

3. Financial Support:

Adults may have been blessed with greater financial resources, making it possible to provide significant financial support for the mission trip. They can contribute to funding the trip, covering expenses, or donating to the undertaken project.

4. Organizational Abilities:

Adults often excel in planning and logistics. They can help coordinate travel arrangements, set schedules, and manage resources efficiently, ensuring the mission trip runs smoothly.

5. Emotional and Spiritual Maturity:

Adults tend to have a deeper well of emotional and spiritual maturity, which can be especially helpful when dealing with challenging or emotionally charged situations. Their ability to provide a calm and composed presence can have a soothing effect on the group and the community they are serving, and it can ensure that Christ is represented well even when things get tough and frustrating.

Who Can Go on A Mission Trip?

The simple answer is – anyone! Age is not a barrier when it comes to participating in mission trips. Whether you’re in your 20s or your 60s, there’s likely a mission trip that suits your skills and interests. The Lord calls us all to serve Him.

Understanding Mission Trips

Mission trips are journeys taken by individuals or groups who want to volunteer their time and skills to help communities in need in the name of Christ. These trips can be domestic or international and often involve activities like building homes , teaching English, providing medical care , or sharing religious beliefs. The duration of these trips can range from a few days to several months.

Mission trips are not just limited to young people; they are increasingly popular among adults of all ages and backgrounds. In fact, there’s been a notable increase in mission trips for adults over the past few years. These experiences provide an opportunity not only to make a difference but also to learn about different cultures, meet new people, and challenge oneself personally and spiritually.

Can You Go?

So, can you go on a mission trip ? Absolutely! Mission trips for adults are not only possible but also incredibly rewarding experiences that allow individuals to make a tangible difference in communities around the world while growing personally and spiritually.

How Counseling Helps Churches Embrace a Missional Mindset

Dr. Tim Allchin November 6, 2019 For Those Giving Help 2 Comments

counseling mission trips

One of the major blessings of biblical counseling is that it naturally brings a missional mindset.  I love that.  Strong churches are not content to allow those around them to hurt without seeking to compassionately care.

I was training at one of our Launch partners in Long Island, NY and was thrilled to hear about their new plans to engage their community.  They are planning to come alongside the local sheriff to help those come out of prison transition and talk with county leadership about how to help families in the new county medical center across the street that largely serves at-risk populations.

On the Sunday that I visited, they held a church picnic after church where I sat down at a table with a fourth grader and an eighth-grader from a Hispanic heritage.  Soon, four more young Caribbean girls sat down along with a female young adult children’s volunteer.  Twice a week the volunteer picks them up from the local transitional housing shelter and brings them to church and is sharing the gospel and her life with them.

As I rode to the airport, I sat with a 50-something carpenter who was in tears about how God had brought two young men to Christ in his men’s bible study.  His face resonated joy as he described how his daughters were now marrying these two young men and they were all walking with the Lord and serving faithfully in this church.

This is a practical and inspiring example of a church that is embracing a missions mindset.

Taking a Missions Trip in counseling

This past weekend I taught from the Sermon on the Mount on how Jesus challenges us to overcome anxiety: placing value on what is eternal and trusting him with our future.  I had read this passage many times, but I always stop way too early and missed something crucial to understanding this passage correctly.

Do you want to know what Jesus did right when he got done teaching about the new life and came down off the mountain?   He took a missions trip .  You can read about this trip in Matthew 8-9.  It was quite some trip, with danger, uncertainty, opposition, and blessing.  Over and over again, Jesus met the physical and spiritual needs of those he encountered.  He proved he was worthy of trust in every area of life.

Look at what he did next!  When they got back from the missions trip,  He prayed for workers to go into the Harvest, and then he sent them out on their own missions trip to love others with the same compassion that he demonstrated throughout His missions trip. (Matthew 9:36-37)

I am convinced that many churches stall out because they never complete this crucial last step, they don’t take missions trips and they don’t send out saints for ministry.  Our idea of missions trips is typically overseas, but how about across the street, across town, or into your schools, prisons, youth outreaches or health departments?  The mission is what is important, not the location.

Changing our Goal

We should think about a new goal for counseling success!  The true success in biblical counseling is for someone to become a disciple-maker.  Teach people to obey, show them the power of God, prepare them to embrace their purpose, and send them out to impact others.  Isn’t this the clear pattern of Jesus over and over? This is why effective counseling can’t be fully done in a counseling office or in 8 timed sessions.

The goal is that we send those who we counsel into the fields, where they can comfort others with the comfort they have been shown.  This is why churches are the best place for biblical counseling and care.  Speaking the truth in love over time is the best way to grow.  Allowing scripture and relationships with God’s people to train you in righteousness and learning to shoulder responsibility in the disciple-making mission of the church.

Embracing Biblical Counseling changes your church culture by helping your people realize that they leave the service to enter the mission field.

Here are three implications of this mindset shift for those passionate about biblical counseling.

  • The best counselors are often those who have been counseled because they return on a missions trip to your counseling ministry to help others find the hope and peace they have found.
  • Our communities around us are full of opportunities for trained biblical counselors to make an impact as volunteers .  Does your church send out trained counselors to youth/medical facilities, shelters, and prisons with the goal to listen long enough that our community feels loved?  You can’t do it all, but partnering together with other churches can bring people marked with the gospel to many areas of need around us.
  • Jesus taught us to be serious about equipping his disciples to be disciple-makers .  Does the mission of your church align with this?  It should! Biblical Counseling can be an effective way to train people of all backgrounds and ages to embrace the opportunities around them.

If you are wondering if your church can have a great impact, we would love for 2020 to be a year that your church looks back upon as a year where you stopped being content with doing church, and you started to do what the church exists for.  We are thrilled when we hear our partner churches making progress.  We would love to help you too!

Volunteer Abroad in Mental Health, Psychology and Special Needs

Danielle Forshay

By Danielle Forshay

Volunteer Forever - Volunteer Abroad in Mental Health, Psychology and Special Needs

Updated for 2023-2024

Mental health and special needs are important issues everywhere, and in many countries around the globe, there is still much work to be done to combat pervasive social stigma, discrimination and low quality of life. Many mentally disabled people simply do not have access to adequate care, or local superstition prevents them from receiving it. As a volunteer on a mental health or psychology placement, you will work to overcome these barriers and help communities embrace a mindset that approaches mental health matters with care and understanding.

International Volunteer HQ (IVHQ) offers 17 special needs volunteer projects in exciting destinations such as Cambodia , Croatia , Nepal , Mexico , and more!

Another program in particular that you will want to check out is Maximo Nivel, which offers tons of volunteer opportunities in Latin America, including medical volunteer projects and special needs internships . If you are looking for an opportunity outside Latin America, then check out GoEco’s Special Needs program in Israel .

Finally, an additional excellent organization is Volunteering Solutions which offers a special needs program in Delhi and a disabled children program in Peru .

Read on to learn more about some of the best international mental health volunteer opportunities available.

International Volunteer HQ (IVHQ)

VolunteerForever

International Volunteer HQ (IVHQ) provides affordable volunteer programs in 40+ countries worldwide. An innovative organization, IVHQ works with local organizations and NGOs to offer more than 300 programs that deliver sustainable value for communities and for the environment. Since its start in 2007, IVHQ has sent over 130,000 individuals abroad annually. With program fees starting at only $20/day, this is an affordable option for travelers on a budget. Program durations range from one week to six months, and support is available 24/7 for participants throughout Africa, Asia, Latin America, Europe, the Caribbean, and the Pacific.

Volunteer in Vietnam

IVHQ’s Special Needs project in Vietnam needs caring people to work in schools, hospitals, community clinics, or orphanages, helping mentally disabled children affected by Agent Orange. Your assistance will go a long way to support the day-to-day operations in hospitals and community clinics, where you will be working alongside local placement staff. No experience is necessary to sign up, and duties may include rehabilitation exercises, therapeutic treatments, playing with children, entertaining and educating them through games, music, and art, painting murals, renovation work, and helping to develop fundraising initiatives. Accommodation is a volunteer dormitory at a Tourism College nearby. Program fees start at $300 for one week. Read more about this program here.
