Academic Calendar & Exams

Academic calendar.

The campus operates year round, with fall and spring semesters of 16 weeks each, a winter session in between fall and spring semesters (which is considered part of spring semester), and a summer term that includes two three-week sessions (Maymester and Augmester), two five-week sessions, an eight-week session and a 10-week session.

The University of Colorado at Boulder has a legal and moral obligation to accommodate all students who must be absent from classes or miss scheduled exams in order to observe religious holidays; and takes care to not inhibit or penalize these students for exercising their rights to religious observance. For further information, see the university policy on the observance of religious holidays and absences from classes and/or exams .

Summer 2024

Spring 2025, summer 2025, final examinations.

It is the policy of the University of Colorado Boulder to adhere to the final examination schedule as published by the Office of the Registrar each semester. Unless notified otherwise in writing during the first week of classes, students enrolled in undergraduate courses should assume that an examination will be given. While it may be appropriate not to give a final in some undergraduate courses, such as independent studies, laboratory courses, seminars, project-based courses and colloquia, final examinations are integral parts of the instructional program and should be given in all other undergraduate courses. Graduating seniors are not exempt from final examinations. Students enrolled in graduate courses should consult with their instructors on whether final examinations will be administered.

• The final examination in a course should be given as scheduled by the Office of the Registrar and not at other times, even if the instructor and all students in a course agree to such a change. An instructor may allow individual students to take the final examination at an earlier or later time if the instructor is satisfied that an exception is based on good and sufficient reasons and if such an exception is unlikely to materially advantage or disadvantage the interests of other students in the course.
• Students should consult with their instructors and course syllabi for final examination information for courses that are scheduled at non-standard times and are not included in the published final examination schedule.
• Final examinations in summer courses and in courses offered during special (variable length) sessions in fall and spring semesters are typically administered on the last regular meeting day of the course. No Common Exams for multiple sections of a single course may be scheduled for special session courses.
• The week of classes preceding the scheduled final examination period should be used primarily for continued instruction and may include the introduction of new material. For courses in sessions of ten weeks or longer, no examinations may be given during the week of classes preceding the start of the campus’s final examination period; however, assignments listed in the syllabus such as papers, lab practicums, presentations, portfolios and projects may be due during that week.
• Class sessions or graded assignments of any kind, including papers, lab practicums, presentations, portfolios and projects, may not take place or be due on a day designated in the academic calendar as a Reading Day.
• When students have three or more final examinations on the same day, they are entitled to arrange an alternative examination time for the last exam or exams scheduled on that day. When students have two final examinations scheduled to meet at the same time, they are entitled to arrange an alternative examination time for the course that meets later in the week during the term or, if the two courses meet on the same day during the term, the course that meets later in the day. Students must make arrangements with the instructor of the affected course(s) by the standard deadline to drop a course in that term and are expected to provide supporting written information of these situations to qualify for exceptions.
• The submission deadline for grades each semester or special session is 96 hours after the conclusion of the final examination, excluding designated university holidays.
• The Provost (or designee), in consultation with the Senior Vice Chancellor (or designee), may either reschedule or cancel final examinations in response to inclement weather or other emergencies that result in a campus closure during the final examination period. The administration’s determination of whether to reschedule or to cancel final examinations is based on the number of exam periods affected by the closure and the timing of the closure.

Rescheduled Exams

A final examination may be rescheduled within the final examination period. Students who do not participate in a rescheduled final examination are not guaranteed any make-up examination or alternative assignment, and in such cases students will be assigned course grades based on tests, assignments and other graded work completed up to the end of the term.

Canceled Exams

If a final examination is canceled, course grades will be assigned based on tests, assignments and other graded work completed up to the end of the term. Faculty may also offer a make-up examination and/or allow for an alternative assignment to be submitted after the final examination period. However, such opportunities must be made available to all students enrolled in the course, all final work must be received and graded no later than the end of the first week of the subsequent term (inclusive of summer session), and faculty must then submit change of record information for students whose course grades change due to their work on make-up examinations or alternative assignments.

President Saliman explores wide range of topics during visit to CU Boulder

President Todd Saliman on Monday visited CU Boulder for a wide range of events and discussions with faculty, staff and student shared governance leaders, as well as top administrators from the campus.

President Saliman and other leaders from the CU system met with members of the CU Boulder Staff Council , representing classified and university staff as well as Professional Research Assistants and Research Associates.

The morning meeting was followed by an afternoon session with members of the Boulder Faculty Assembly , in which Saliman spoke about the important role that challenging conversations play in a university setting, and that a campus needs to be a safe place for those conversations to occur.

At lunch with CU Boulder Student Government (CUSG) and Graduate and Professional Student Government (GPSG), representatives discussed a recent recommendation that resulted in adding student ambassadors to help rural students get better acclimated to campus during orientation.

Student orientation also was a topic of discussion for President Saliman and staff from student affairs and enrollment management. New student orientation, which had been largely online, now will offer daylong and overnight options at the campus. Recent developments include a new enrollment management plan and the establishment of a High School Advisory Board. Students who apply for admission by Nov. 15 will receive notices of acceptance by Dec. 15.

Another session found the president focusing on CU Boulder’s recently updated Climate Action Plan , which calls for a clear path to a zero-emissions target for the campus by 2050.

President Saliman also took the opportunity to explore arts offerings at the campus, receiving an overview of the new Art Buffs Collective , which encourages collaboration of students from any major to support on-campus creativity. The day also included a peek into a hip-hop dance class and an evening reception.

The CU Boulder visit concluded the president’s current series of campus visits, which also included stops earlier this year at CU Denver , UCCS and the CU Anschutz Medical Campus .

Pro-Palestine protests spread to more Colorado college campuses as Auraria encampment continues in Denver

D ENVER — Student protests against the Israel-Hamas war spread to college campuses throughout Colorado this week as a solidarity encampment at Denver’s Auraria Higher Education Campus entered its seventh day.

Demonstrations at the University of Colorado Boulder, University of Denver, Colorado State University, University of Northern Colorado and Colorado College called for a cease-fire and for campus leaders to divest from activities and funding related to Israel.

Metropolitan State University and CU Denver student organizers met with Auraria officials Tuesday “to try to achieve an amicable path forward,” the campus said in a news release.

“(Students for a Democratic Society) leaders indicated that they are engaging in ‘civil disobedience;’ they recognize that they are in violation of the campus no-camping policy; and they have no intention of removing the tents until their demands are met,” Auraria officials said in a statement.

Auraria and Denver police arrested 44 demonstrators Friday for violating the campus camping policy after an hours-long clash between riot-gear-clad officers and student, faculty and community protesters.

Campus leaders are trying to portray students as unreasonable and uncompromising, said student organizer Harriet Falconetti.

“We are being uncompromising, but that’s because we don’t want to compromise on genocide,” Falconetti said. “SDS has been protesting about this issue on campus for months and (the administration) hasn’t come to the table with us. They’ve stonewalled us.”

The students’ demands are largely outside of CU Denver Chancellor Michelle Marks’ purview, Auraria officials said in the news release. The CU Board of Regents met in executive session Monday and Wednesday to receive legal advice on protests.

Protests also caught on at other Colorado college campuses this week, with students and community members organizing rallies and other events from Greeley to Colorado Springs.

In Boulder, nearly 50 students gathered outside the University Memorial Center just before noon Wednesday to stage a “die in” reflecting Palestinian deaths before marching to Norlin Library, the Daily Camera reported.

Students at Colorado College walked out of class Wednesday morning in support of Palestine, the Colorado Springs Gazette reported, and approximately 250 students, faculty and alumni gathered on Tava Quad to protest.

About 350 people joined a rally Monday at Colorado State University to ask campus leaders to demand a ceasefire and divest from support for Israel’s military, the Fort Collins Coloradoan reported.

And in Greeley, 14 students walked across campus on Monday morning, chanting and holding signs supporting Palestine, student journalists at the UNC Mirror reported.

Auraria campus officials said they asked student organizers to “continue the dialogue to come up with creative ways to move forward,” according to a Tuesday news release.

But in a statement on Instagram, student organizers said administrators have engaged in “minimal, if not nonexistent” effort to engage with students and address their demands.

“Until our demands are met, we will continue to stand in solidarity with our Palestinian brothers and sisters and uphold our right to dissent,” the group said.

Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders joined his son, Shedeur Sanders, and several other members of his team, in an online battle with The Athletic, members of Austin Peay's football team, and many others this week.

The battle started over an article written by Max Olsen of The Athletic. It chronicled the journey and experience of the 53 players that entered the transfer portal after Deion Sanders took the job at Colorado.  I had a message for the University of Colorado Head Coach. 

Deion Sanders promoted his method of clearing out Colorado's 2022 roster by making it publicly consumable content, so Colorado fans shouldn't be surprised that there's interest in what happened to the players that Coach Prime moved on from.

The Sanders family might be frustrated with the article from Max Olson at the Athletic, as well as the quote from Austin Peay defensive back Xavier Smith, “We sat on the sofa, and (Deion Sanders) is talking to us, but he’s not even looking at us. I’m looking (Defensive Coordinator Charles) Kelly dead in his eyes. (Sanders) said he felt like I should hit the portal. He didn’t want me to waste a year thinking I could earn a spot. I was actually getting mad, like tears coming to my eyes. Because, bro, you never even tried to get to know me.”

I point out that it's no excuse to resort to middle-school level bickering in front of the entire college football-consuming world. Deion Sanders is the leader of young men and has to be better than this.

Student flu shots are available October-January at the following locations:

Faculty and Staff Flu Shots 

Flu shots are available for all CU Boulder staff and faculty from October-January and are free through most health insurance plans. Please email [email protected] to request an appointment.

Preventing the Flu 

• Avoid close contact: Avoid close contact with people who appear sick or who do not feel well. 
• Avoid touching your face: Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. 
• Cover your cough/sneeze: Cough or sneeze into your sleeve or the crook of your elbow rather than your hands. 
• Get vaccinated: Getting the flu shot is the best way to prevent the flu. 
• Stay home: If you’re sick or don’t feel well, stay home.
• Wash your hands: Use warm water and soap to wash your hands or use hand sanitizer. 
• Wear a mask: Masks can help prevent airborne transmission of viruses like the flu. 

Flu Symptoms 

Common flu symptoms can include: 

• Fatigue (very tired) 
• Fever or feeling feverish 
• Muscle, body aches or chills
• Runny or stuffy nose  
• Sore throat 
• Vomiting or diarrhea (most common in children) 

Flu Vaccine Information 

• Antibiotics will not treat the flu virus. 

Because the flu is a virus, antibiotics cannot be used to treat it. However, there are a variety of flu-specific medications available. They are most effective when taken within the first 48 hours of symptoms. It is better to prevent the flu altogether by getting vaccinated.

• Can I get the flu and COVID vaccines at the same time? 

Yes, it is safe to get a flu shot and COVID-19 vaccine at the same time.

• Cold weather does not cause the flu. 

Cold weather often causes us to spend more time indoors which other people, which creates more chances for close contact and transmission. However, it is not spread because of the cold weather itself. 

• Flu vaccines can protect yourself and others. 

Flu vaccines can help prevent you and those around you from getting the flu. They can also reduce your chances of illness, severe complications, doctor visits, hospitalizations and missed work or school due to the flu. The more people who get vaccinated, the more people will be protected against the flu. 

• Flu vaccines don’t guarantee you won’t get the flu. 

Flu vaccines are based on predictions about the strain of flu that is likely to spread or be the most problematic during a particular flu season. Because multiple strains may be circulating at once, it is not guaranteed that your shot will protect you against them all. Maintaining good hygeine, avoiding close contact with sick people and covering your nose and coughs can all help prevent infection.

• The flu spreads through droplets. 

Experts believe the flu virus spreads through droplets created when we cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can land on others nearby and infect them. A person might also get the flu by touching surfaces that have the flu virus on them before touching their mouth, eyes or nose, though it is less common. 

• The "stomach flu" is not the same as the seasonal flu. 

The stomach flu (norovirus) is different from the seasonal flu. The seasonal flu virus rarely causes symptoms like nausea, vomiting or diarrhea in young adults.  

• Who should get vaccinated? 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends a yearly flu shot for anyone over 6 months of age. It is recommended that you receive a flu shot by the end of October if possible. While everyone should get a flu shot for flu season, it is especially important for those who are at high-risk of developing flu-related complications. Flu vaccines are strongly recommended for those who are elderly, pregnant or who have a chronic health condition.  

• You cannot catch the flu from the flu vaccine. 

The most common flu vaccines use parts of killed or inactive flu viruses. Live versions of the flu vaccine are made from weakened strains of the flu. Flu shots cannot give you the flu. If a person gets sick after receiving a flu shot, it is most likely because they are already sick or they are experiencing an immune response, which is normal. Side effects generally include soreness at the injection site, minor illness and aches.
