Global medallists head strong fields for götzis.

Olympic champion Damian Warner, Olympic silver medallist Anouk Vetter and their fellow global medallists Ashley Moloney, Emma Oosterwegel and Lindon Victor form part of the formidable fields set for the Hypomeeting in Götzis, this season’s third World Athletics Combined Events Tour Gold meeting, this weekend (18-19).

The world-class event will be a key step for many on the road to Rome and path to Paris, with athletes preparing for the European Championships in Italy and the Olympic Games in the French capital.

Warner continues to work towards his Olympic title defence by returning to compete at the Mösle-Stadium for the 11th time, as a seven-time Hypomeeting decathlon winner.

After six successive victories, the Canadian 34-year-old finished runner-up to his compatriot Pierce LePage last year and that top two was repeated at the World Championships in Budapest three months later as LePage took the title ahead of Warner and Grenada’s Lindon Victor.

Now Warner is back in Götzis as a four-time world medallist and he’ll renew his rivalry with Victor, who is also in the line-up.

Victor has had one 400m outing so far this year, while Warner’s performances at the Bryan Clay Invitational last month included a 13.65 110m hurdles, 15.15m shot put and 4.80m pole vault.

Moloney, meanwhile, has already completed a decathlon this year and he goes on the hunt for a performance that will secure him a place for Paris. The 24-year-old, who set his Oceanian record of 8649 to win his Olympic bronze in Tokyo, competed in Götzis last year but withdrew before the 1500m, while his campaign at the World Championships in Budapest also came to an early end. He finished 13th with 8038 on his debut in Götzis in 2019, receiving the 'rookie of the meeting' award.

Two other athletes on the entry list have also surpassed 8400 points in their careers so far: Switzerland’s Simon Ehammer and Estonia’s Johannes Erm. After deciding to focus on the long jump in Budapest, where he finished ninth, Ehammer rebounded to win the Diamond League title in the individual discipline at the end of the season. He returned to global combined events action at the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow in March, where he won the heptathlon with a national record score of 6418.

Erm was also in PB form in Glasgow and his 6340 points earned him world indoor bronze.

In Götzis they will be joined by Erm’s compatriot Risto Lillemets, the European indoor bronze medallist who was second at the Multistars last month, plus Brazil’s South American champion Jose Fernando Ferreira Santana, USA’s Devon Williams and Germany’s Tim Nowak.

Can Vetter regain heptathlon crown?

After winning the Hypomeeting heptathlon title for the first time in 2022, Vetter withdrew during her title defence last year as a precaution due to achilles discomfort.

She was back in medal-winning form in Budapest as she bagged bronze to go with the world silver and bronze medals she had already claimed in Oregon and London, respectively, as well as her Olympic silver from Tokyo.

In Götzis two years ago, Vetter became the first Dutch heptathlon winner in the event’s history with a then national record score of 6693. She improved again less than two months later, scoring 6867 to secure her world silver in Oregon.

She’s not the only Olympic medallist in action, however, as she faces her compatriot Oosterwegel, who claimed bronze in Tokyo and then finished fifth at the World Championships in Budapest. Her PB is the 6590 she set in Tokyo.

USA’s Taliyah Brooks recently matched her PB of 6330 to retain her Multistars title and four weeks on she is back in action. She’ll be joined by her compatriots Erica Bougard and Annie Kunz, who have both surpassed 6500 in their careers so far, plus Michelle Atherley and Allie Jones.

Switzerland’s Annik Kalin and Austria’s Ivona Dadic and Verena Mayr also have 6500-plus PBs and add further strength to the field as they target performances that will put them in the running for Paris. Like Brooks, 2018 world indoor pentathlon silver medallist Dadic also contests her second heptathlon in a month. Continuing her comeback after injury, she competed at the Multistars but withdrew before the 800m. The 2019 world bronze medallist Mayr finished fifth in the pentathlon at the World Indoor Championships in March, while Kalin – the world indoor long jump fifth-place finisher in Glasgow – is back in multi events action after finishing runner-up at Decastar in September.

Also competing on home soil is Sarah Lagger, while others looking to make an impact will be Germany’s Sophie Weissenberg and Vanessa Grimm, and Great Britain’s Holly Mills.

Who Is Frank McCourt, The Billionaire Trying To Buy TikTok?

McCourt sold the Los Angeles Dodgers for a hefty sum in 2012. Here’s how he’s been building his business and media empire since, and setting up a potential consortium to purchase TikTok.

Billionaire investor and entrepreneur Frank McCourt wants to fix social media and ownership of individuals' digital identity.

B illionaire investor and entrepreneur Frank McCourt is organizing a bid to buy TikTok through Project Liberty, an organization to which he’s pledged $500 million that aims to fight for a safe, healthier internet where user data is owned by users themselves rather than by tech giants like TikTok parent ByteDance, Meta and Alphabet. Project Liberty announced the potential bid on Wednesday and is planning to work with investment bank Guggenheim Securities and law firm Kirkland & Ellis on the deal in partnership with several of the leading technologists already participating in the Project Liberty initiative.

McCourt is entering the conversation with a track record of heavy criticism of tech giants, especially of Chinese-owned TikTok. “We have to break the model or evolve the model into one where it returns the control, the agency, the choice, the ownership and the rights to individuals,” McCourt, who is 70, told Forbes in November. “It's either really Chinese tech or American. Those are your choices.”

Best known as the former owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, McCourt spent most of the past decade focused on investing the approximately $850 million in proceeds from the team’s 2012 sale via his company McCourt Global. He sprinkled money into sports, real estate, technology, media and an investment firm focused on private credit. In January 2023, McCourt stepped down as CEO of McCourt Global to focus on Project Liberty but remains executive chairman and 100% owner. McCourt’s assets are worth an estimated $1.4 billion, landing him on Forbes’ billionaires list for the first time this year—though his wealth is a far cry from the estimated $220 billion valuation of ByteDance. He plans to raise money from foundations, endowments, pension funds and the general public as part of his plan to shift users’ accounts to a protocol that gives them more control of their digital identities and data, according to Semafor .

The TikTok bid will likely run into a wealth of competition , some from the very same tech giants that are the subject of McCourt’s criticism of the world’s tech infrastructure. McCourt is no stranger to longshot plans, given Project Liberty’s broad mission.

“You have to start from the vantage point that anything is possible, and then we’ll run into the challenges and deal with them one at a time,” he said late last year of his quest to reform technology. “At the end of the day, there are no guarantees that any of this will be successful.”

M cCourt’s entrepreneurial roots date back to 1893, when his great-grandfather founded the McCourt Company, a Boston-based construction business. He attended college at Georgetown University, graduating with an economics degree in 1975 before returning to Massachusetts and developing real estate in the Boston Seaport beginning in the 1980s.

He tried to buy his beloved Boston Red Sox in 2001 but lost the bid to billionaires John Henry and Tom Werner . A few years later, he reportedly used 24 acres of land on the South Boston Waterfront land as collateral to purchase the Los Angeles Dodgers at an enterprise value of $371 million in 2004. His controversial tenure as the Dodgers’ owner, which included allegations of financial mismanagement and tax avoidance, ended with the team filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2011. McCourt sold the Dodgers for $2.2 billion in 2012, the largest sports sale in history at the time, netting him approximately $850 million in cash, after taxes and a highly litigious divorce.

In the meantime, McCourt had sold most of his Boston real estate, much of it in 2006, and began to diversify his investments. Now his property holdings include a cluster of buildings in the high-end Dallas Design District and stakes in additional commercial and residential real estate in California, Texas and London. (McCourt Global sold a stake in a Miami development for $363 million in 2022.)

He’s also continued to invest in sports: In 2014, McCourt Global bought a 50% share of the Global Champions League and Tour, one of the equestrian world’s most well-known show-jumping competitions, which he sold for an undisclosed sum in 2022. Four years after the Dodgers sale, McCourt also bought storied French soccer club Olympique de Marseille for approximately $50 million. He’s since invested heavily in the team, which generated more than $200 million in revenue in the 2021-2022 season, though the team has lost hundreds of millions since McCourt purchased it, the Athletic reported . Around the same time, McCourt founded a private-credit-focused investment firm, MGG Investment Group, which grew from $300 million under management in 2016 to $5.6 billion in 2023.

McCourt also helped establish his alma mater’s Georgetown School of Public Policy with a $100 million donation in 2013 and a second $100 million commitment in 2021.

Through that period, McCourt grew increasingly worried about user ownership of data, after realizing that much of the data researchers at Georgetown wanted to access wasn’t available to them.

“Inside the school is a massive data institute,” McCourt said. “We knew that access to data would be great for policy makers, but we learned very quickly that the data they really needed is not available to them because it is controlled by big tech companies. … The people with the power in Washington either didn't understand what was happening with the tech and people’s data, or they looked the other way because they were taking money from these big, powerful, rich platforms who have lobbyists and advocates all over the place.”

In 2021, McCourt decided to start Project Liberty, which is focused on research, policy advocacy and technology investments to help people have more control over their data and digital identities, according to its president and acting CEO Tomicah Tillemann. Project Liberty has a research arm in a collaboration with French research university Sciences Po, Georgetown and Stanford, which funds research projects related to data ownership and social media. The advocacy work takes the form of events, including several around McCourt’s book on the subject—“Our Biggest Fight: Reclaiming Liberty, Humanity and Dignity in the Digital Age”—which was co-written with CoinDesk’s Michael Casey and published in March.

Until now, Project Liberty’s technology arm, meanwhile, had centered on something called a Decentralized Social Networking Protocol (DSNP), an open-source protocol that would allow users to own their data and connect it across platforms. McCourt likened DSNP to the way the same phone number works across different carriers, but a specific phone number is tied to a specific user. McCourt invested in a 20-million-user, web3-based platform called MeWe, leading a $27 million funding round in 2022.

It’s unclear how viable the economic model for a decentralized protocol would be—there’s not yet enough research or a solution that can scale at the size of today’s tech giants, but McCourt’s intention to migrate some of TikTok users’ data to DSNP would be a much bigger shift for his initiative.

Also unclear is how much McCourt himself has already given to the initiative, how it plans to spend his $500 million commitment and whether some of that will go toward a TikTok purchase. But one thing is for certain: McCourt, the main funder of the organization, which has doled out some $50 million so far from its nonprofit side per its latest tax filing, wants this to be his legacy for the next generation. “I’m blessed to have seven kids,” he said at his book launch event in March. “I’ll tell you what: that’s what I’m fighting for.”

Rose Zhang Makes Late Run to Capture Second LPGA Tour Victory at Cognizant Founders Cup

Rose Zhang

CLIFTON, N.J. — Rose Zhang is back. Nearly a year after shocking the golf world by winning in her first start as a professional on the LPGA Tour, Zhang has once again found victory lane on the biggest stage in women’s golf, playing her final five holes in 4-under to win by two shots over Madelene Sagstrom at Upper Montclair Country Club.

Zhang was one shot behind the Swede to start the final round, and after Sagstrom bogeyed the first hole, the pair were tied at 18-under. But Sagstrom recovered with a birdie on the par-5 2nd hole to get back to 19-under and once again move one ahead of Zhang. Zhang tied the lead with a birdie on the par-4 4th hole and then both players birdied No. 5, sitting in a tie at 20-under with 13 holes to play.

Sagstrom then made birdies on the par-3 6th and par-3 8th holes to get to 22-under, parring the ninth to lead Zhang by two shots with nine holes remaining. The 31-year-old then extended her advantage to three with a birdie on the par-5 12th hole, but Zhang wasn’t about to lie down and quit.

The 20-year-old closed the gap with a one-two punch of birdies on 14 and 15 to get to 22-under overall, and when Sagstrom bogeyed the par-4 16th hole, the duo were all tied up coming down the last two holes. Zhang birdied the par-3 17th hole to pick up another shot on Sagstrom, now sitting one stroke ahead at 23-under with only the tricky par-4 18th hole left to play.

Both Zhang and Sagstrom found the fairway off the tee and hit spectacular approach shots inside 15 feet into the challenging 18th green, with Zhang ultimately having the honor of playing first. Admittedly shaking with nerves, Zhang lined up her winning birdie putt and stroked it confidently, showing no signs of having anything but ice in her veins.

And when the ball tumbled over the edge of the cup, it was a reaction of complete relief from Zhang. She had finally captured her second victory on the LPGA Tour, a win that felt like it had eluded the young superstar for longer than necessary since she became a Rolex First-Time Winner last year in New Jersey.

“Honestly, today has been a roller coaster. I knew it was going to be a grind,” said Zhang, who carded a bogey-free, 6-under 66 in the final round. “I think coming out I had those expectations of today, I really have to find it in me to even play well, let alone win. Madelene has been playing rock-solid golf. She's been blowing away the field, so I’ve just been trying to keep up.

“Coming down the stretch, I hit some crazy shots that I don't know if I could hit again in that moment of pressure and was able to get it done. That putt on the last hole, I was already shaking over the putt, but just thinking, okay, let's give it a chance, roll it. If it goes in, fine. If it doesn't, let's prepare ourselves for a playoff.”

This is the second time that Zhang has converted her 54-hole lead/co-lead into a victory, having also led by two shots through three rounds at the 2023 Mizuho Americas Open before going on to defeat Jennifer Kupcho in a playoff at Liberty National Golf Club. Her Cognizant Founders Cup title is her second Tour title since she accepted the immediate LPGA Tour membership offered as part of her non-member win in Jersey City, N.J. in 2023 and is Zhang’s second professional win in a span of 343 days.

If you had asked Zhang last spring if she could’ve guessed how much success she’d have this early into her tenure as a professional golfer, the young talent definitely wouldn’t have believed you.

But sitting in this moment now as a two-time LPGA Tour winner, Zhang couldn’t be more grateful to have had the opportunities she has over the last year and has solidified her place as a budding superstar in women’s golf.

“I was even considering not turning pro, from last May or two years back,” said Zhang. “I wanted to come out here and be able to compete against the best in the world. In order to have that, I had to work my way up. Coming out here, clearly everyone's such incredible players with incredible resumes. Every person in the field basically has a win under their belt. I think being able to even come out with a win, coming out with two, I’m just very blessed.”

Overcoming external expectations can sometimes be a challenge for a professional athlete, and after all the accomplishments she racked up in 2023, Zhang was definitely feeling a bit of pressure coming into her first full season as an LPGA Tour member in 2024. But all those nerves are assuaged after today’s victory, and it feels like Zhang can finally relax a little bit and enjoy life on Tour a little bit more, something she’s excited to do in the coming months with some of the biggest events in the game on her summer schedule.

“Coming out here on Tour, there was a lot of expectations on me to perform, especially after what I did at Mizuho last year,” said Zhang. “Sometimes the noise did get to me a little bit, but I had such a good support group around me. I had people who really stuck in and told me to take it one at a time.

“It's crazy to come out here. Didn't have any expectation of having to win because I realize that it's all just noise, and I have to be able to work at it myself and try my best to put myself in positions like this. But no matter what happened this week, I would've been very satisfied and it reignited my passion for the game once again.”
