About Grease

Grease is a 1971 musical by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey. Named after the 1950s United States working-class youth subculture known as greasers, the musical is set in 1959 at fictional Rydell High School and follows ten working-class teenagers as they navigate the complexities of peer pressure, politics, personal core values, and love. The score borrows heavily from the sounds of early rock and roll.

Theatre Review: Grease (UK Tour)

Grease theatre review (UK Tour): Grease is still the word as the forty six-year-old musical embarks on a 2017 tour, arriving in the capital at the New Wimbledon Theatre.

Grease theatre review by Barbara Jones, April 2017.

The story : Dust off your leather jackets, pull on your bobby-socks and take a trip to a simpler time as Danny and Sandy fall in love all over again. It’s the original high-school musical, featuring all the unforgettable songs from the hit movie including You’re The One That I Want, Grease Is The Word, Summer Nights, Hopelessly Devoted To You, Sandy, Greased Lightnin’ and many more.

From the moment the orchestra struck up with the Overture, the expectation for the evening was set, and the audience were not disappointed.

Grease is now forty six years old and is now delighting and exciting its third generation of fans. Energetic and athletic, the dance routines were brilliantly executed, enhanced by the talented and vigorous orchestra – the audience loved every beat and knew every beat.

A skilful dancer and good singer, The Wanted’s Tom Parker gave an excellent performance, but he was unfortunately not quite as convincing as some as Danny, in contrast to a faultless performance by Strictly Come Dancing’s Danielle Hope, she was everybody’s perfect Sandy. The transition from Sandra D to Sandy was total – from virgin to vamp in minutes!

Grease theatre review UK Tour // Image: Paul Coltas

The magnetism of Louise Lyton , as Rizzo, was tangible – her every presence on stage was unmissable, at times poignant and, as hoped, the audience both loved and hated her. The audience were there to love and embrace and reminisce about every moment of the production.  Feet were dancing, hands clapping and, unfortunately, our voices were singing!

Grease continues to enthral its audiences, and the feel good factor is still there.  Could Warren Casey have guessed when he wrote this musical just how iconic it would be? Would he have written it if he had not met Jim Casey at an after show party? How lucky for so many audiences over so many years, that he did!

Grease theatre review by Barbara Jones, New Theatre Wimbledon, April 2017.

Grease plays at the New Wimbledon Theatre, London until Saturday 29th April 2017.

Grease’s UK Tour is here. The world’s greatest musical, is back and better than ever. The original high school musical is a West End production that features Tom Parker. Parker is a key member of the Wanted, the UK’s top boy band. Parker will take on the role of Danny.

Danielle Hope plays the role of Danny’s love interest, Sandy.

The cast’s experience shines on the stage with Parker using his vocals to ignite the crowd. World famous, Parker began his career in 2009, and his band, The Wanted, produced three platinum albums. Parker’s bad boy look is perfect for the role of the leather wearing Danny.

Hope is a highly trained actress that debuted as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. Jumping right into leading roles, she has been in several big-name productions, including Les Misérables and The Last Five Years. Hope is also an accomplished musician that won Over The Rainbow, taking on 9,000 other girls. Her win led to her releasing the hit single Over The Rainbow. She has also made several appearances on television, including appearances on The One Show and Tonight’s the Night.

Grease is a mega production with 140 costume changes and sets that will provide the musical’s backdrop.

The love story comes to life on stage with the show starting with the entire cast singing Grease is the Word. Parker doesn’t show any signs that this is his first major production. He works hard on stage, and it comes through with an amazing performance that John Travolta would be proud of seeing. Hope’s talent leads the show with a stunning rendition of Hopelessly Devoted to You.

The song is a highlight of the show.

Grease the Musical is filled with high-energy, feel-good music. The cast’s “big hair” and “big skirts” will bring the audience back to the 70s.

The musical is never a dull moment with the night’s songs including Greased Lightnin’, Summer Nights, Sandy and You’re the One That I Want among the night’s performances.

Rizzo, a fan favorite, is played by the witty and talented Louisa Lytton. Lytton has been performing since a young age and is a prodigy from Sylvia Young Theatre School. The former EastEnders star has an impressive resume with credits including The Bill, American Pie, The Edge of Heaven, Fractured and several others.

An accomplished dancer, she brings flare to the musical offering a rendition of Rizzo that the audience will appreciate. Grease is back with tour dates spanning through the end of 2017.

The original West End production of hit musical Grease is going on a national tour, opening at the Palace Theatre in Manchester on Friday 10 March 2017.

The cast will be led by Bolton-born pop star Tom Parker, formerly of The Wanted, in his first ever theatrical role as heart-throb Danny Zuko.

Parker gained worldwide success with The Wanted, achieving two UK number 1s and nine top 10 singles as well as four Billboard 100 singles, with Glad You Came placing in the top 5 and selling over 900,000 records.

The band had three platinum albums, two sold out arena tours, and three million singles sold in America. Tom is also a winner of BBC Radio 1’s Teen Choice Award and US People’s Choice Award with The Wanted.

Tom said: "I'm delighted to be confirmed as Danny Zuko in the national tour of ‘Grease’. For the tour to start in Manchester is even more exciting for me, being born not too far down the road in Bolton."

Parker is even putting his wedding on hold to go on tour with Grease. He got engaged to fiance Kelsey Hardwick last year but admitted recently that there won't be a wedding until 2018 - as Danny prepares to take over his life for most of this year.

"We want to make sure we plan it right and I don't want to take two weeks off, get married, do a week on honeymoon, then go back on tour. I didn't think that was something I'd be comfortable with. So next year we'll have a big wedding," Tom told Hello! recently.

Parker and Lytton have worked together before - on celebrity winter sports show The Jump.

"We get on well working together and we always just take the mickey out of each other," said Tom. "You need that – we're on the road for ten months and it'll be tedious at times, with eight shows a week, so I think it's good that we've got that humour and that good working relationship."

It first opened in the West End in 1993 where it ran for six years. The show has since toured the world, having been seen by more than 12 million people in the UK alone.

The show is directed by David Gilmore (Daisy Pulls It Off, Happy Days, Song & Dance, Footloose) and choreographed by Arlene Phillips (Starlight Express, Saturday Night Fever, Flashdance The Musical & BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing).
