Hatfield & mccoy region.

The rugged Hatfield & McCoy Region of southwestern West Virginia ascends the valleys of slow moving rivers south along the border of Kentucky and into the sharp-peaked Cumberland Mountains.

Gallery of Hatfield & McCoy Region

The Hatfield & McCoy Region includes some of the most fantastic scenery in West Virginia -- lush forests, dramatic terrain, and coal-era ghost towns. Visit the Hatfield & McCoy Region Photo Gallery .

In the late 1800s, the region was infamously the domain of the Hatfield clan, members of which feuded with the McCoys of Kentucky. By the early 1900s, the remote landscape had grown into one of the world's busiest coal mining regions, and countless ghost towns raised during that stormy period remain to be explored on foot or by ATV. ATV touring on the Hatfield-McCoy Trails network is one of the region's biggest tourist draws. Tourism, logging, and coal mining are primary industries here.

The Hatfield & McCoy Region includes much of the mountainous area in Boone , Mingo , Logan , and McDowell counties and parts of southern  Wayne , western Mercer , western Raleigh , southern Lincoln , and southern Kanawha counties and adjacent areas in Kentucky.

The US-119 expressway travels through the central region from Williamson, in the southwest, to Charleston, to the northeast. Along the way it courses through Logan, Madison, and Chapmanville. Highways US-52, WV-10, and WV-3 travel southeast to northwest through the region. As result of the extreme ruggedness of large areas, many areas of highway are winding.

Hatfield~ McCoy Trail System

Is your idea of fun riding an ATV or dirt bike? Or maybe you want to give it a try on your next vacation? If so, then a trip to southern WV should be in your future. The Hatfield~McCoy Trail System offers riders the best terrain in the East, and it only continues to get better.

What Is It All About? The Hatfield~McCoy Trail System project was developed by the WV Legislature in 1996 to provide trail based recreation

hatfield mccoy west virginia tourism

Enjoying the view on a Hatfield-McCoy Trial Ride

opportunities in 9 southern counties. The first trails were opened in 2000, and 300 miles of riding was available to users.  There are 6 trail systems within the system, which will eventually encompass 9 counties and contain 2,000 miles of trails.

Here’s a bit more about each system:

•                Bearwallow Trail System – Located near Logan. Contains 67 miles of trails. •                Buffalo Mountain Trail System – Located between Williamson, Delbarton, and Matewan. Contains 102 miles of trails. •                Indian Ridge Trail System – Located near Ashland, WV. Contains 63 miles of trails. •                Little Coal River Trail System – Located near Danville and Madison. Contains 55 miles of trails. •                Pinnacle Creek Trail System – Located near Pineville. Contains 80 miles of trails. •                Rockhouse Trail System – Located between Man and Gilbert. Contains 90 miles of trails •                Pocahontas Trail System – The newest trail system, located near Bramwell. Contains 57 miles of trails.

Where Can I Ride?

When the Hatfield~McCoy System is complete, it will run through 9 southern West Virginia counties: Wayne, Lincoln, Mingo, Logan, Boone, Kanawha, Wyoming, McDowell and Mercer. These counties are in the heart of the southern coalfields of West Virginia and much of the trail system lies on old coal mining land.

Today, trail heads can be accessed near many small communities in these counties. This makes it easy for riders to get gas, food, and to find places to stay while enjoying the Hatfield~McCoy Trail system.

Why You Should Go

Whether you like to ride ATVs , UTVs, dirt bikes, mountain bikes, horses, or you just like to hike, these trails provide plenty of fun for all. They were developed to accommodate all types of riders and safety is always first.

The Hatfield~McCoy Trail System interacts with many of the local communities to promote cultural resources. The Shawnee Living History Trail, Coal Heritage Trail , Chief Logan Civil War and Indian Museum, and Hatfield Cemetery are all within close proximity to the trail. You should make plans to stop by one (or all) of these attractions.

The Hatfield~McCoy Trail system really does have it all. Come and check out some of the nation’s best trails right here in southern West Virginia.

The Ultimate Guide to the Hatfield McCoy Mountains & Trails

Nestled in the southwestern corner of the Mountain State, West Virginia’s Hatfield-McCoy Mountain Region is truly an adventure-lover’s paradise. The region’s vibrant landscapes are as iconic as the area’s namesake – the infamous Hatfield and McCoy family feud – and make for the perfect backdrop for your southern West Virginia adventure.

If you like hiking, kayaking, fishing, ATVing, or even moonshine tasting, the Hatfield-McCoy Mountains should be placed at the top of your adventure travel bucket list!

We spent a long weekend exploring the area, learning the history of the region, bopping around the unique Appalachian towns, reconnecting with nature, and traversing the area’s hundreds of miles of ATV trails, and we could not have had a better time!

We’re so excited to team up with the West Virginia Department of Tourism and Hatfield McCoy Trail System to show you where to eat, stay, and play in southern West Virginia in hopes that our recommendations will help you to have as much fun in “Almost Heaven” as we did.

Where to Adventure in WV’s Hatfield-McCoy Mountains

With ample opportunities for adventure in the form of ATVing, hiking, fishing, kayaking, and moonshine tasting, we can assure you that there is no shortage of fun to be had here.

Woman walking towards a waterfall with an ATV in the foreground and trees and greenery in the background

Exploring by ATV

With over 1,000 miles of professionally managed off road trails, West Virginia’s Hatfield-McCoy Trails system is one of the largest of its kind in the world and offers something for adventurers of every skill level. Whether you prefer to ride a dirt bike, ATV, UTV, or to get your Jeep a little muddy, you’ll be able to easily find the perfect trail for you. The Hatfield-McCoy Trails are composed of 10 total trail systems, many of which connect to the surrounding ATV-friendly towns, meaning you can legally drive your machine on the road!

While hitting the trails with our Jeep or a dirt bike was tempting, we ultimately decided to rent a side-by-side from BAC Country Rentals . In just a weekend of exploring the area by ATV, we were blown away by what we found. Here are our highlights by trail system:

  • Rockhouse Trail : Complete with waterfalls, old mining structures, and mountain top vistas, this trail offers access to the ATV-friendly towns of Man and Gilbert where you can stop by any of the town’s dozens of locally owned shops for a post-adventure treat.
  • Buffalo Mountain Trail : Nestled above the town of Williamson is Death Rock Overlook, the location of one of West Virginia’s newest and most beautiful photo opportunities. This summer, WV launched its Almost Heaven Swing campaign to celebrate some of the state’s most picturesque (and instagrammable) views. Built by local students at the Nicholas County Career and Technical Center, these swings have been placed all over the Mountain State and boast some of the best views this wild wonderful state has to offer.
  • Devil Anse Trail: While exploring this trail, be sure to visit the burial site of William Anderson “Devil Anse” Hatfield and other Hatfield family members at the Hatfield Cemetery. Erected on a piece of original Hatfield property, stands a life-size statue of Devil Anse Hatfield atop his grave. The cemetery is open to the public and is accessible via a short walk from a roadside pull-off on route 44 or directly from the Devil Anse trail system itself.
  • Bearwallow Trail: With access to the ATV-friendly town of Logan, this trail system is ORV, ATV, UTV, and off-road motorcycle friendly and is known for both its scenic views and twisty difficult trails.

Hiking WV’s Hatfield-McCoy Mountains

If you’re looking for a day of exploring by foot, a visit to Chief Logan State Park is in order. There are 18 miles of trails to explore, but we recommend hiking Coal Mine or the Guyandotte Beauty trails to see old mining structures amid the lush greenery that is reclaiming the landscape. Both trails are under two miles and are rated as moderate and difficult respectively.

hatfield mccoy west virginia tourism

In addition to opportunities for hiking, this park offers an immersive museum inside its Visitor’s Center that is full of artifacts and exhibits that tell the story of how the region changed over time and has been shaped into what it is today. We also were lucky enough to catch a live performance of The Aracoma Story at the park’s amphitheater on our first night in the area, and it provided so much historical context for the rest of our visit. This show features local volunteer actors who tell the story of a white scout who falls in love with a native princess and the simultaneous chain of events that ultimately led to the eradication of the Mingo and Shawnee factions that once inhabited the very area we were visiting. The Aracoma Story, Inc puts on an incredible show for several weekends each summer, and if you visit in July, this performance is a must-see.

Where to Dine and Drink in the Hatfield-McCoy Mountains

  • Indulge in some authentic Italian cuisine at Chirico’s Ristorante . Founded in 1981, this Logan, WV staple pays homage to the area’s large Italian population. We recommend ordering the firecracker chicken fettuccine, the carbonara, or a calzone, and make sure that you save room for dessert and ask for the butter brickle!
  • Stop by The Broken Axel for some local WV brews and a bite to eat. This restaurant/taphouse (located just outside the town of Man and accessible from the Rockhouse Trail) is the perfect place to wind down after a long day on the trails.
  • Drop down out of the mountains of Rockhouse Trail and into Keith’s bar and grill. We’re suckers for a good dive and this one is no exception. With classic pub fare and cold beer, it’s easy to see why the weekend sees a parking lot full of off-road machines and cars alike.
  • Get your hands on some delicious pastries and other sweet treats at Nu Era Bakery . Originally started by a coal miner’s wife who was looking for a place to bake, Nu Era is now a Logan, WV favorite, and the current baker still uses the original founder’s recipes.
  • If you love coffee and/or Harry Potter, Hot Cup is the place for you. While the staff of this eclectic coffee shop don’t advertise it, if you know where to look, you can step right into the under-the-staircase bedroom of “the boy who lived.” Yep, that’s right, just to the right of the pickup counter in a closet under the stairs is a little slice of magic that you’re free to explore and reminisce over.
  • Wet your whistle with the “drink of the devil” at Hatfield & McCoy Moonshine Distillery . Made from an over 150-year-old recipe and distilled on original Hatfield land, this moonshine is the real deal. The only difference is, that this variety is 100% legal and produced in small batches, 6 days a week by a master distiller with a direct lineage to Devil Anse himself.

Where to Stay in Southern West Virginia

Exterior of Rockfort Cabins, Appalachian Outpost, West Virginia

If you are planning to explore the Rockhouse, Devil Anse, and/or Buffalo Mountain ATV trails, we recommend staying at the Rockfort Cabins at the Appalachian Outpost (pictured above). These spacious three-bed/two-bath cabins are located on the same “resort” as the Broken Axel Bar and Grill and offer beautiful mountain views, trail access, on-site rentals as well as a gas station that is coming soon. If you are interested in exploring the Jeep-friendly Bearwallow trail system, we recommend staying in the town of Logan. If you like to be surrounded by nature, we recommend a stay at Chief Logan State Park . This park hosts one of WV’s most visited facilities and offers opportunities for camping as well as more elevated stays in their newly-constructed four-room cabins as well as in their modern lodge.

After exploring the Hatfield-McCoy Mountain Region of West Virginia for a long weekend, we came home eager to plan our return trip. We hope you enjoy exploring Southern WV as much as we did! If you have any questions or suggestions, please do not hesitate to drop them in the comments!

Although we had already experienced quite a bit of West Virginia, we never had been to the far west – which is exactly where we went on our latest road trip.  Logan, West Virginia, home of the Hatfield-McCoy Trails, and our trip’s bucket list destination! We were invited out to Logan by the West Virginia Department of Tourism and Hatfield McCoy Trails to experience the trails first-hand, try the local food, get to know the amazing people in the area, and even attend a couple of festivals happening back-to-back on this beautiful, sunny weekend. To say that we were excited about this trip was definitely an understatement.

Getting To Know Logan County, West Virginia

Logan County (and the adjacent Mingo County) has been historically a coal mining and timber harvesting region but has flourished into quite the tourist destination in the last few decades. The local leaders had the foresight to diversify the region’s industry, as the coal and timber jobs wouldn’t be enough for the growing population. The transition to becoming a tourist destination leaned heavily into the region’s dense history and natural beauty, showcased through the Hatfield-McCoy Trail Systems (HMT). People visit from near and far to ride the 1000+ miles of motorized trails through the history-packed wilderness of West Virginia.

After a quick pit stop at Tudor’s Biscuit World (an absolute must-try – pro tip: these biscuits are giant, and two biscuit sandos are too much ), we started our journey at the Country Roads Byway Visitors Center. We met some helpful employees and could take in some of the town’s history through some exhibits they had set up. With all the information we needed, our next stop was Matewan – where we had an extraordinary experience planned.

Next Stop - Matewan

There are two routes when driving to Matewan from Logan : one being scenic and the other more highway driving. We opted for the scenic, more mountainous drive and were thankful we did. We got to see some gorgeous fall-colored mountains and valleys, small towns, and the Hatfield Cemetery (which has the tomb and impressive marble statue of the notorious Anderson “Devils Anse” Hatfield).

And To The Ride You Could Never Forget

While we started becoming more acquainted with the area’s history and the Hatfield-McCoy Feud, we would soon experience the historic sites and their surrounding facts and legends on a boat! Keith Gibson, the owner-operator of the Hatfield-McCoy Airboat Tours , took us on a ride we will never forget. From the moment you meet with Keith in the town of Matewan to the last minute you disembark the airboat, you will be overwhelmed with the incredibly unique experience. Just being in the presence of Keith walking through Matewan – he can’t help but tell you where the Matewan Massacre took place, where the coal-miners union was formed (hint: in a current coffee shop), and so much more about Matewan and the family feud. Riding on the airboat is an entirely out-of-this-world experience that was almost too much simultaneous awesomeness; you don’t know where to look first! This thing has a corvette motor hooked up to a giant fan that can float over any thin layer of water and has a smoother ride than any boat we’ve been on. You get to cruise calmly or even take exhilarating-fast turns ( if desired ) while Keith points out wildlife, the points of interest in the Hatfield-McCoy feudal history, and just the simple beauty of the Tug River. The Tug separates WV and KY – also, every single person you float by will at least wave hello, if not holler out a friendly greeting. The ride is safe for all ages; you barely get wet, and getting on and off the boat is a breeze.

hatfield mccoy west virginia tourism

Afterward, we walked through town and met locals who owned some of the businesses in downtown Matewan, including the owner Wingo’s Grill which had the absolutely best-smelling BBQ on the smoker outside. If you’re looking for some other tasty places to eat, you can grab some Mexican food at Mi Pueblito , grab a beer at the Trailhead Bar & Grill , and start or end your day with a coffee and a yummy treat at Chit and Chat Coffee Shop .

We drove the alternate route back to Logan, which is excellent if you need to stop at a supermarket on the way back down. Before finally making it to our home for the night, we stopped at Chirico’s Italian Restaurant , where we had some foods we had never tried before – highlights for us were the Frankwich and the Pizza Baked Lasagna. Both are good, but the Frankwich was a home run – almost an amalgam of a calzone with a ham sandwich; it is only made at Chirico’s and worth the try.

Where to Stay in Logan County

One of the best things about Logan was the sheer amount of good food, amenities, and even the amount of lodging options. While there are a lot of hotels, camping, and even luxury cabin rental choices around Logan, we found an absolute gem of a spot by checking into the Appalachian Outpost . These cabins are basically brand new and are immaculately clean with all the amenities you could need. The fire pits outside each patio were a nice touch; all the guests out by their fires at night intermingling with fellow trail riders was such a fun atmosphere. While they are still building out – they are on their way to becoming a one-stop shop for literally everything you would need on a trip to the HMT (e.g., laundry, gas station, coffee, ice cream, rentals, etc.). It’s more of a country resort than just a cabin rental.

Where to Eat

While calling the Appalachian Outpost home – The Broken Axle was our second home on the property. This restaurant had the absolute friendliest crew and the most well-thought-out, modern gastro-pub food with a WV twist (hands down, the best salads we’ve had since coming east from Los Angeles). Warning: if you get the Appetizer Sampler, literally every person who walks by asks you what you have ordered. It is an absolutely over-the-top display of perfectly-fried decadent deliciousness – bring your appetite and probably a few friends! They have the most fabulous wall art, axe-throwing, darts, pool table, live music, karaoke – ok, I’ll stop. No wonder it’s constantly buzzing with people – especially during the busy weekends with all the trail riders staying at the Appalachian Outpost. You will see rows of side-by-sides and ATVs parked in front at all times during the weekend.

After a tiresome day, we slept like logs in our warm, cozy cabin and woke up excited to finally get on the trails! But first, why wouldn’t we stop for breakfast and coffee ?

We wanted something light to grab and go – Nu-Era Bakery was a no-brainer. The business has only changed ownership once, in 1996, which was more like passing the torch. This place has been open since 1940 and is literally a historical landmark, and the new owners carry on its legacy with great respect and love. Picking just a few pastries from the staggering number of choices was tough, but we ended up with a cream horn, a blueberry cake donut, and the local favorite – the Bismarck. The Bismarck is a freshly-made doughnut topped with chocolate icing and a dot of sweet buttercream.  There is something about being in a bustling bakery with bountiful bonbons. Everyone who walked in seemed to know each other and gave each other and all the staff familiar greetings.

With the confections curiously concealed, we headed to Hot Cup Coffee , only about a block down the street. There is so much to say about this place, which is apparent the moment you step inside. But let’s talk about the coffee – this might be the only coffee house in town where a coffee snob or hipster would find themselves, and the barista knows the difference between a Gibraltar and a cortado . They also have a full menu of coffee- and non-coffee-based beverages, many of them with fun themes (e.g., ButterBeer). This brings us to the actual space the coffee shop is in: they have local art on the walls, always have seasonal decorations, and HAVE A HARRY POTTER THEMED UNDER-THE-STAIRS-ROOM alongside a lot of other film memorabilia. It also has a very inclusive feel; it’s a safe space for everyone to enjoy – a judgment-free zone with espresso.

We geared up to document a possibly wet, probably cold, but maybe hot, and hopefully muddy ride. For those unacquainted with

We geared up to document a possibly wet, probably cold, but maybe hot, and hopefully muddy ride. For those unacquainted with West Virginia’s weather – especially when you’re in the more exposed, mountainous regions – it’s always a good idea to always dress in layers. It can be warm for one minute in the sunshine and get cold quickly in shady and windy areas.

Experiencing The Hatfield and McCoys Trail First-Hand

The HMT offers over 1000+ miles of scenic trails suitable for most Off-Road Vehicles or colloquially known simply as “machines.” All kinds of side-by-sides, ATVs, UTVs, and even dirt bikes can ride parts of the trails meant for novice drivers all the way to single-track trails for the technically-skilled drivers seeking a challenge. Drivers come from around the US and even internationally to ride these trails, seeking new adventures and visiting the many restored historical sites that were made infamous by the Hatfield-McCoy family feud. Of course, it helps that the HMT also offers access to machine -friendly towns like Gilbert, Man, and Matewan, to name a few – they are ever expanding in their offerings to trail riders.

hatfield mccoy west virginia tourism

We settled into our machine (a very comfortable four-seater) that was operated by an expert driver and guide (Thanks Rick! As we have questionable histories as ATV-drivers). We were lucky enough to ride on one of the most popular and sought-after trails – The Rockhouse Trail . It offers over 100 miles of interconnected trails of varying difficulties, with direct access to the Man and Gilbert. Although we were out riding for a few hours – we experienced it all: we had to go through some wet conditions, saw a beautiful waterfall, drove by some old abandoned mines, talked to a myriad of fellow trail-riders, and experienced the backwoods of West Virginia in a really unique and fun way. When we got to the precipice of our trail ride, we were treated to breathtaking and sweeping views of the Appalachians, with the colors of fall beginning to bloom throughout the mountains and valleys. We came back down with a little more speed and vigor now that we had gotten used to the bumps and bruises of the trails – our hearts were full, but our stomach’s empty from the exhilarating excursion.

hatfield mccoy west virginia tourism

Before getting ready for our evening activity, we headed back to The Broken Axle for the best darn salad money could buy. Well-fed, somewhat rested, and wearing our Saturday night party outfits (our limited road trip wardrobe means they are pretty similar to all our other ‘fits), we headed to the airport for our special event for the night.

The Hatfield and McCoy Fire and Ice Festival

The Sixth Annual WV Fire & Ice Festival featured craft beer and local wine tasting, a chili cook-off competition, food vendors, and live music. As exciting as this jam-packed evening festival sounds –the venue made it so much more special – it was literally on the mountaintop airport (Logan County Airport). They had a spectacular turnout, with many of the town’s local businesses and clubs bringing their hours of hard work and love in the form of massive chili bowls with all the accouterments. All the festival attendees were encouraged to taste all the different chili entrants and then cast their votes for the people’s choice prize. Then there were the ‘professional’ chili judges who tasted, smelled, and admired all the chili entries through a strict chili scoring lens. Faith was chosen as a special guest judge and helped decide the fate of this year’s chili contest!  They were even giving out free t-shirts, various merch, and company swag. We even bought the most amazing cinnamon roll from one of the local food trucks on location. The craft beer and local wine-tasting setups were terrific – never having to wait too long in line with over 12 tapped beers with eager volunteers waiting to fill your beers.  It was exactly how you would imagine a small-town festival – everyone knew each other, good food, good drinks, and good times. They loved having out-of-towners visit – I don’t think we’ve been anywhere with such a welcoming vibe as West Virginia; we especially felt the hospitality that night.

With a night of too much spicy chili and just enough craft beers under our belts, we retired again to the Appalachian Outpost and even had a chance to catch a few karaoke songs at the Broken Axle (never a dull moment). The morning at the Outpost was ablaze with trail riders gearing up their machines and getting themselves and their families ready for a jam-packed day on the trails, followed by a celebration of all things off-road at the National Trailfest Event.

Chief Logan State Park

Before heading to Gilbert for the National Trailfest, we wanted to explore the area a little more, so we planned a quick hike and some relaxation time in the nearby Chief Logan State Park. We were lucky enough to stop and get a to-go lunch at the Four Seasons Country Market . Honestly, with the number of floral displays, seasonal decorations, farm fresh produce and foodstuffs, and even a petting zoo – it was hard not to spend even more time there. Next, we took our lunch to the nearby Chief Logan State Park and enjoyed the park’s green areas while we picnicked and listened to the fun being had by the family celebrating a birthday. After our little picnic, we hurriedly hiked through the Cliffside trail that bordered the park to get our bodies moving. We opted to only squeeze in a mile today to not tire ourselves out for the National Trailfest Event.

One of the best parts about Trailfest every year is the parade of decorated ATVs and side-by-sides. However, before the parade began, we needed to pick up our event passes and one more quick pitstop to take in some more history. Hatfield-McCoy Distillery combined the hometown feel of a bar (where everybody knows your name) with lots of friendly banter and even bigger flavors. Owner-operator Chad Bishop, married into the Hatfield family, appropriately carries the legacy of distilling moonshine and corn whiskey in Gilbert, WV. We had a few free samples of different flavored moonshine and even ordered a beautifully-basic burger, which was what we needed to get us through the night.

Gilbert National TrailFest

Held in the charming town of Gilbert, WV, each October, The National Trailfest combines a jam-packed weekend of a “Las Vegas” night, an on-trail scavenger hunt, and an otherwise schedule full of trial-riding-related activities. We walked back down from the high hill the distillery was on and walked right into the route of the Trailfest parade. We saw some hilarious and very impressively decorated machines and cars alike. Some of the standouts included the Mystery Machine from Scooby-Doo, the many machines adorned with local school pride (go Lions!), and some just had a vibe with loud music and mud all over them. But one thing everyone had in common – was having a good time, waving, and smiling. It’s hard not to be cheesin’ at a parade!

After walking past what felt like miles of decked-out machines, we checked in and made it through the security and gates. At this point, we had so many wristbands from all our activities I felt like we were on a wild weekend-one Coachella adventure. There was so much going on that we didn’t know where to start. Then the motocross stunts began, and it was obvious where we had to take our attention. After about twenty minutes of watching this coordinated trio flipping their hundreds-of-pound machines through the air with ease, the drag racing strip and mud-laden obstacle course were fully operational. The rest of the night, we spent getting various fun foods from all the local vendors, watching everyone getting muddy from the “splash zone” (they had an area set up with eager bystanders encouraging the machine drivers to spray them more mud!). Nearing the end of the night, we decided to throw caution to the wind – in one final glorious moment – we got positively drenched with a heavy dose of mud. The night ended with a beautiful display of fireworks and everyone leaving the festival in a parade-like fashion with happy bellies and high spirits.

hatfield mccoy west virginia tourism

We could not have chosen a better weekend to experience Logan and its surrounding areas. While we did time our trip to experience the fantastic festivals, I can imagine any random weekend during the Hatfield-McCoy open season being an absolute blast. Some might even prefer a slower weekend, so you have the trails all to themselves. But the HMT covers so many miles that it is easy not to be nearby other riders. Logan and the interconnected ATV-friendly, trail-towns are expanding with even more fun activities, amenities, lodging, and various stores to become more family-friendly. It doesn’t always have to be only the boys going out to the trails, but riders and tourists of all ages, genders, and walks of life who will find out why they call this place Almost Heaven, West Virginia.

Hatfield-McCoy Trail celebrates its 13th year in Mercer County

bramwell – Thirteen years ago, a new form of outdoor tourism came to Mercer County and started bringing visitors and their dollars to the county and large swaths of southern West Virginia.

Local officials and members of the media took a ride Thursday along the Pocahontas Trail, Mercer County’s branch of the Hatfield-McCoy Trail. The Pocahontas Trail extends for 70 miles through forests leading to scenic overlooks and other sights such as artifacts from the region’s coal mining heritage. It also offers routes ranging from easy to extreme for ATVs, UTVs and dirt biker enthusiasts.

Jamie Null, executive director of the Mercer County Convention & Visitors Bureau, welcomed guests at the Pocahontas Trailhead off Route 52 in Coaldale, a community a few miles from the town of Bramwell, and spoke about the Pocahontas Trail’s economic impact. In 2023, the Hatfield-McCoy Trails system sold 92,000 ridership permits.

“It’s been 13 years since this trail was opened in Mercer County, and we couldn’t be more excited to celebrate 13 years’ worth of riding in the mountains of West Virginia,” Null said at the trailhead.

“We’ve seen huge growth in ATV tourism,” she said. “We’ve seen a lot of entrepreneurs coming and opening up lodging to cater to these visitors and we’ve also seen the demographics of the riders change. We’ve seen more families coming now – extended families that come as a group and they bring children along, so it’s turned into a family vacation on the Hatfield-McCoy Trail.”

The county’s ATV economy is expected to keep growing.

“I see continued growth,” Null said. “The outdoors industry in West Virginia is certainly important and I believe Hatfield-McCoy Trails plays a positive role in that.”

Mercer County’s tourism industry has become a significant employer.

“In Mercer County we have about 2,000 tourism jobs,” Null said. “And the Department of West Virginia Tourism has done a wonderful job at trying to expand educational opportunities within the vocational schools and eventually into the high schools and local colleges to train people to work in the outdoor industry; so we’re going to work hand-in-hand with them as well to make sure Mercer County is part of that.”

Null added, “As tourism grows in West Virginia, there’s going to be a lot of jobs that open up; so it’s a career choice that a lot of high school and college students should look at when planning their futures.”

Unlike economic development that starts in cities, the tourism industry reaches into Mercer County’s rural communities.

“I think it’s exciting and it revitalizes these communities and it shows them what can be done with hard work; and a lot of these entrepreneurs, they have used their own money to create these businesses and I think that’s something to showcase, that they’re willing to roll up their sleeves and do the work,” Null said.

One local official was getting ready to drive a UTV in the celebration’s caravan. It wasn’t his first ride on the trail system.

“It’s my first time for this anniversary event, so this is pretty exciting to check it out,” said Mayor Grant Bennett of Bramwell.

Having the Pocahontas Trailhead so close to Bramwell brings benefits to the town, he said.

“Oh, business opportunities for sure and economic. The economy we have in this area, here and north, is tourism now because of the trails,” Bennett said as more pickup trucks hauling ATVs and UTVs arrived at the trailhead. “It just brings great business opportunities for the locals and everyone around.”

Bennett said that the Pocahontas Trail keeps offering opportunities for businesses.

“I think as the town’s flourished, things have been popping up left and right,” he said. “Places to stay. More places to eat, other venues. I think a lot of people like to see things to do in the evening times after they’re through riding the trails. I know for myself a big factor is the connect-ability between the trails. To me, it’s a destination adventure. People may stay down here towards Bramwell and destination out to Mullens or Northfork and loop around back, so any trails that make a destination where you can loop around and not hit the same trails twice, which makes it a little bit more of an adventure.”

The off-road caravan left the trailhead. Soon the UTVs were going up steep and rocky trails and taking sudden hairpin turns. Springtime forests sometimes plunged the trail into shadow as tires gripped the muddy route and splashed through mud puddles. Bennett compared the scene to driving through the movie “Jurassic Park” and compared the route to a “wooden rollercoaster.”

Soon the caravan stopped at what looked like a cave lined with bricks. It was one of the many ovens used to create coke, a substance processed from metallurgical coal and used for manufacturing steel. A historical marker showed visitors that it was operated by Buckeye Coal & Coke/Booth-Bowen Coal & Coke circa 1886-1960s. When fall arrives and trees lose their leaves, it’s sometimes possible to see the foundations marking homes and other buildings that stood decades ago when workers used the coke oven.

Today ATV tourists sometimes leave trinkets like little gnome figures or painted rocks for others to find and distribute around the trail system, Bennett said.

As the caravan headed into Bramwell and lunch at The Corner Shop, it encountered another caravan heading up the trail. The media caravan’s lead driver held up fingers to show the approaching drivers how many vehicles needed to pass. Bennett, being in the last UTV, raised a fist to show his was the last vehicle. The other caravan’s riders headed for their own day of adventure on the Pocahontas Trail.

The Silver Fox was perfect for our family. The craftsmanship put into making a shed a super cute cabin did not go unnoticed. Lots of details in the decor to support The Silver Fox and the surroundings of where the cabin resides were pretty cool. The cabin was pristine and had what was needed for amenities. Reneila, our host was super responsive before, throughout and even sending us well wishes for safe travels. Wish we could have stayed longer to enjoy a campfire. Until next time...Cheers to an amazing new adventure perfectly suited for the area. 🫶 Marsha from AirBnB

HATFIELD & MCCOY FOUNDATION

Our mission is to educate and preserve the hatfield-mccoy family history of the famous blood feud while promoting peace and showing the world it is possible to love beyond our differences..

hatfield mccoy west virginia tourism

The Hatfield McCoy Foundation is a 501c3 that was founded to create, promote, and preserve The Hatfield & McCoy Families’ History. While promoting the family history conveying our message of Peace, Love, Diversity, Inclusion, Acceptance, and Togetherness, and assist in aiding the local economies of the Appalachia Mountains.

Due to the economic shift of the natural resources, and coal companies closing because of the nation’s focus on clean energy, there is a greater need for tourist attractions to help the local economies.

Utilizing the Hatfield & McCoy family history will bring additional tourism and tax revenue to the Appalachia Mountains while promoting and preserving our family history.

The Hatfield McCoy name is already a trusted and famous name due to our historic background of the blood feud between the families.  This Foundation will become the official Hatfield McCoy entity for both families showcasing the history.

It will be able to expand into various aspects of tourism destinations, products, appearances, and activities in the local community and around the country.

The foundation will be dedicated to promoting peace and showing the world it is possible to love beyond our differences.
