J-Bar talk with Billy Moyer Jr.

We are going to talk about the J-bar on a race car today. It is sometimes called the pan-hard bar and is located on the rear of the racecar.

It hooks to the left side of the frame and goes across in the shape of a “J,” which is what gives the part its name. The other side of the J-bar hooks connects to the car, adjacent to the drive shaft (pinion side).

We have different options when it comes to a pan-hard bar such as the straight bar, bud bar (also known as the Rayburn bar), and the most popular is the J-bar. We use the J-bar to keep the rear-end of the car in the desired position. The placement of the J-bar controls several settings on the rear of the car.

j trip bar

With it we can set the side-to-side measurement, which allows us to define the placement of the rear-end from one side or the other. The placement of the rear-end directly affects how and where your shocks and 4-bar rods are attached. As you can already see the J-bar can have a major impact on how well or how poorly the car handles.

The J-bar can vary in length from roughly 18 – 22 inches from center to center. We have numerous adjustments on our race car, and moving the J-bar left to right can really change the handling characteristics.

Moving the J-bar to the left side of the car tends to make the car tighter, which creates more traction. Conversely if you pushed the bar to the right it would result in or freer or looser handling car.

A longer – 22 inch – bar tends to stick the car harder in the corners. You have to be careful because this can also create a “push” in certain conditions. A shorter J-bar makes the car react a little quicker but tends to make the car looser. I usually run a long BSB Manufacturing J-bar on my Billy Moyer Victory Race Car. I like the feel of the car sticking harder on entry and try to adjust the car elsewhere if I am stuck too hard or if the car is too tight.

You can adjust the J-bar with the measurement on the frame side or the pinion side. However, it’s just important to be consistent on how you are documenting it. Otherwise your notes might not always match, and you could be in for a big surprise the next time you hit the track.

The higher the measurement from the frame side tends to stick the car harder and make it tighter in the corners. The lower the measurement would make the car turn in easier and have less stick.

You can lower the J-bar on the pinion side in order to tighten the car on corner exit, which gives the car more traction

Too tight (The RR won't step out to free up the rear of the car)

If I am at a track like Tri City Speedway (Pontoon Beach, Illinois) – which is known for being a “tight in” type of racetrack – I would take a look at my J-bar placement on the frame if I was too tight getting in the corner. I would lower the J-bar on the frame with hopes of it making my corner entry freer, which would allow me to carry more speed into the corner. Update: 11/2/22 this is a rear tire adjustment not a front tire, if the car don't turn in the corner you may still need to make a front end adjustment to the setup. What you are wanting is the rear tire to step out some before taking a set on the RR or scotching up.

Too loose ( The car is not going fast enough to load RR on entry) If I am at a track like Belle-Clair Speedway (Belleville, Illinois) – which is known for being a “looser” type of racetrack – I would think about dropping my J-bar on the pinion. It is a very low speed track, and you need all the scotch you can get. If I drop it on the pinion, it would tend to give me more scotch and allow more traction since I am stuck harder in the center of the corner and on exit.

A standard setting for most J-bars would be 8-9 inches from the bottom of the frame to the center of the J-bar heim. The standard setting on the J-bar would be the center of the pinion. Update: Lets start at center of pinion with a 6" to 7" split on mounting points and tune the split to the speed of the track.

Here is a quick rule of thumb we have used over time when it comes to moving the J-Bar. Frame side for entry, up to tighten and down to loosen the car on gas, and on the pinion side on exit.

Hopefully this article gives you some insight on exactly what a J-bar is and its function on a race car. Thanks again to people in racing like Billy Jr and his dad for all they have done, we are going to add to this as a on going blog about the j-bar and how it works. Many ideas into its function and some that are opinions and not fact but still make sense because of the unknown about the rear roll center and its migration in the car.

Update: 5-4-20

With the growing amount of unknown info about the function of a j-bar lets look at a couple of basic ideas in how it works. The reason I say we are learning less is because we have more input the subject due to technologies which is creating theories not facts. So, with out adding to them lets agree on these few facts.

· If we move the whole bar up, we will free up the car.

· If we lower the whole bar down, we will stick the right rear tire harder.

· Pinion swing will move the rear end to the left making the car tighter on gas.

· Big split in the j-bar will move the rear end more to the left under gas.

I would like to see use work on a basic plan to develop a set split amount in the J-bar and move it up and down to tighten the car, instead of just changing one end. I know it is more work, but I feel the outcome will be better for the car. Each chassis manufacture should have a basic set split for their car based on rear roll and weight movement. Than we could move the bar up or down to determine how hard we want it to load the right rear tire. This is a very deep subject with a lot of engineering going into it and we can't get to the bottom of it any time soon, but let make it as simple as we can and learn a little at a time. I will come back to this and update it over time so we can have a better data base on this subject.

Updated 7/20/21

Some of the J-bar movement is going to come from weight placement in the rear of the car, the higher the weight the easier it will move. When you bolt weight on a car in the rear it tends to be higher than a car with weight in it, so that will move easier and may take a different J-bar placement. The one size fits all will not apply here for sure. I do think a chassis manufacture could tell you where they need to be with there cars because they are more alike, so this would be a good starting point. Again, here are some basic starting points for a dirt car with more of a crate type motor or a car that turns in on gas. A modified with a 604 motor and 54 % left side weight would be 1” to 1.5 inch above pinion on a quick-change rear end and center to a 3/4” above on a 9” ford. On the frame side start with a 6” split from pinion as shown below.

Checking height of the J-Bar

j trip bar

Note: the shape of your J-bar will not change how it loads the RR tire, it is a point A and point B device. The design will determine how much load is on the rod ends and how fast they wear out or bind.

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem defends her account of killing own dog in new book

South Dakota governor and Republican vice presidential contender Kristi Noem on Friday responded to a news report about a section of her forthcoming book where she describes killing her 14-month-old dog.

“We love animals, but tough decisions like this happen all the time on a farm,” she said in a post to X above a headline from The Guardian , which obtained a copy of Noem's upcoming book, “No Going Back.”

South Dakota Govv. Kristi Noem speaks at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Dallas on July 11, 2021.

The Guardian's article describes a section of Noem's book, set for release next month, in which she recounted shooting her dog after deciding it was “less than worthless” and “untrainable.”

In her account, Noem grabbed her gun and led the dog, named Cricket, to a gravel pit.

“It was not a pleasant job, but it had to be done. And after it was over, I realized another unpleasant job needed to be done,” Noem wrote.

She then went on to kill a family goat, which she called “nasty and mean.” Noem also led the goat to a gravel pit, where she said her first shot wounded but did not kill the animal. She got another shell for her gun and killed the goat, according to the book.

Noem wrote that her daughter seemed confused when she came home from school, asking, “Hey, where's Cricket?”

NBC News has not obtained Noem's book or independently verified the section reported by The Guardian.

Noem was lambasted Friday on social media; some said they were “ horrified ,” while others posted pictures of their dogs .

The Biden campaign p osted p hotos of the president walking with the family dog Commander, who has had numerous biting incidents , and Vice President Kamala Harris cuddling a dog.

Noem is widely viewed as a top contender to be Trump's running mate. She is in her second term as South Dakota governor, and she previously served as the state's lone representative in the U.S. House.

From the time of the first Royal Windsor Horse Show in 1943, Queen Elizabeth was a frequent attendant , where she would enthusiastically watch equestrian events. After her death in 2022, her family members have continued to attend the show in her honor. In 2023, Prince Edward made the short trip from his home, Bagshot Park, to the grounds of Windsor Castle, where he put on a VR headset to try out a riding simulator. This year, his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, joined him to continue the family tradition.

On Wednesday, Sophie arrived at the castle grounds solo, and watched the FEI Dressage Grand Prix. The duchess wore an equestrian-appropriate tweed blazer and navy dress from Me + Em, navy suede boots by Penelope Chilvers, and an Isabel Marant handbag. During the dressage event, she was photographed closely focusing on the action in the manège and laughing with a fellow spectator.

On Thursday, Edward and Sophie arrived at the grounds together and were photographed trying out the options at the event’s bar. Both royals were wearing olive green blazers, but Sophie accessorized with a colorful silk scarf tied around her ponytail.

Earlier this week, Sophie became the first royal to visit Ukraine since the beginning of the war in 2022. On Monday , she traveled the request of the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office and also carried a message from King Charles III to the country’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. She also continued her work raising awareness of conflict-related sexual violence by meeting with a group of survivors and refugees during the one-day trip.

Collection of vintage menus show what prices were like back in the day in Fort Myers, Naples

j trip bar

Note to readers: The News-Press and Naples Daily News are providing special coverage of food and dining this week. We will have interesting and unique Southwest Florida food and dining stories published on our websites from Sunday, April 28 to Sunday, May 5. Bon Appetit and Bottoms Up!

It's Friday and that usually means, among other things, dinner reservations have been made or need to be made. If not for tonight, then certainly for Saturday or Sunday, right?

Season is over so you have an even better chance of getting a seat at one of Southwest Florida's fantastic dining establishments. This thought of eating out has put us in a reflective, nostalgic mood at the News-Press and Naples Daily News. We brainstormed lots of ideas for our special food and dining week coverage.

One of the cooler ideas, we thought, was to go back in time and see what some menus from yesteryear looked like, especially now as menus become classified as 'endangered species' thanks to something called a QR code.

But who are we kidding? What we really wanted to see was how much a slice coconut pie cost at the Fort Myers eatery Hickory Bar-B-Q (34 cents!), or what we would have to fork over for the Chef's Special at the Snack House also in Fort Myers, which consisted of breaded fresh mullet (fried), tarter sauce, cole slaw, french fries, rolls and butter.

"That would be $4.95 plus tip," the waitress might have said back in 1952.

We put the word out south (Collier) and north (Lee) to see what dusty old relics we could get our hands on. Here are some we found, without the help of Indiana Jones. Special thanks to the Southwest Florida Historical Society and restaurants owners who tracked down these awesome menus in their archives:

The Farmer's Market, Fort Myers

This is one of the oldest restaurants in Fort Myers, opening its doors in 1952. On the website it says, "longest operating restaurant in Lee County", and "serving the finest Southern food you have ever tasted", and "using recipes passed down generations."

The most expensive item on this vintage menu? A large T-bone steak: $3.25

Snack House, Fort Myers

Of all of the menus in the archives at the Southwest Florida Historical Society in Fort Myers, menus from the Snack House outnumbered all of the others in the manila folder.

The Snack House was located on First Street and Broadway and served "good food since 1949" before closing in 1992.

What would we order? For breakfast it would be "The Hearty" − fruit juice, Hot Cakes with syrup, bacon or sausage ($4.65) and for lunch/dinner we'd go with "Big Snack" special − one half pound famous Snack House hamburger served on sesame bun with lettuce, tomato, onion pickle, mustard and mayo ($3.75). And a Pepsi cola to drink (75 cents).

Mike's Landing, Fort Myers

Before there was Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) there was just Page Field in Fort Myers, which was home to a restaurant known as Mike's Landing. Official address on the menu: Old airport terminal. This is a fun menu to read with some clever headings like "Spare Parts" for the sides and "Happy Landings" for the dessert offerings, like a slice of the "ugly purple pie" for 95 cents.

Kelly's Fish House, Naples

Here are some images of vintage menus from the popular Kelly's Fish House in Naples .

"Kelly’s Fish House is a true Naples Original. Established in 1952, Kelly's is and has  always  been family-owned and operated. Arriving guests can always expect to be  warmly greeted as old friends," the restaurant's website proclaims. "Everything about this charming restaurant exudes warmth. Kelly himself, is most likely the man who will show you to your table and probably chat with you awhile. Dining there is like visiting a favorite friend's home."

Hickory Bar-B-Q, Fort Myers

OK. Here's one of our favorites. The menu is small but powerful in terms of its design on the inside and listing of what you can order. Or, as it says at the top of the menu: Elegantly Informal.

How cool is that illustration of the coconut cream pie for 45 cents? But let's save the dessert for last. We will go with the pork sandwich ($1.20), the corn on the cob (35 cents) and a large root beer (25 cents). All of it for $2.25, plus tip!

Snook Inn, Marco Island

Without a doubt, one of Southwest Florida's most popular waterside dining restaurants.

What does the website say? "Marco Island’s famous landmark, the Snook Inn is the perfect place to experience authentic island cuisine for lunch and dinner. Join us for live music every evening and during the day Thursday thru Sunday and even catch a beautiful Marco Island Sunset."

Fried Grouper sandwich "back then": $3.25

Fried Grouper sandwich today: $25

Bubba's Roadhouse & Saloon, Cape Coral

Ah, Bubba's . One of our favs. Always lots of good eats here. We took a ride in our time machine and went back 20 years to see what the menu looked like.

Things that caught our attention were the Fried Fish dinner for $11.95, sizzling steak tips with mushrooms and onions for $9.95 and Bubba's Favorite Boneless Breast of Chicken BBQ'd for $6.95.

O'Bannon's, Fort Myers

It was challenging to find any information about this Fort Myer's establishment as far as when it opened and when it closed.

But the luncheon menu we are featuring here definitely helps provide some context as far a this was a different era when it comes to prices.

Pretty basic offerings with most expensive items on the hand-written menu (nice touch) a "tid bit steak sandwich", a "chicken hash" and "broiled fish in season" all costing $2.50 each. The Irish coffee ($1.50) is a nice touch.

The Real Macaw, Naples

Established in 1992, The Real Macaw is all about "island cuisine, live music and Key West charm", according to the restaurant's website . The will be celebrating the Kentucky Derby this weekend and they have posted an impressive Mother's Day lunch menu on the website.

Our contact at The Real Macaw, Siobhan Cleveland, had this to say about the menus she shared:

"See attached for a trip down memory lane! So much flooded (from Hurricane Ian), we were lucky to have saved these. You can probably guess the relative age based on prices. The blue one is the oldest, from the early 90’s."

J.B. Winberie, Fort Myers

Here's one of the first restaurant to put a stake in the ground at the Bell Tower in Fort Myers off U.S. 41 and Daniels. Historic details are limited, but the prices on the nicely designed, clean looking menu are 1980s-ish. Pretty basic fare with an array of sandwiches, burgers, salads and more.

The Raclette and Salad looks delish. It's called the "Swiss specialty" on the menu. It's Raclette accompanied by a tossed green salad for $4.25.

The Dock at Crayton Cove, Naples

This is Naples' original waterfront restaurant, according the the website .

More on its history:

"Vin DePasquale first opened The Dock Restaurant on Friday the 13th, 1976. There was nothing unlucky about that day - when the doors opened there were over 200 people standing outside waiting to come in. Naples was just a sleepy little fishing village back then - with a city population of just over 12,000," it says on the website.

The menu in the photo is one of the originals with traditional seafood offerings like fried shrimp for $4.50 and a conch salad for $3.75.

Country-themed Honky Tonk bar to open in Jersey Shore town next week

The Jersey Shore town that hosts the four-day summer Barefoot Country Music Festival on its expansive beaches will now be home to year-round country music venue with the opening next week of Wildwood’s Honky Tonk Saloon .

The bar takes the place of a former storage area for aging arcade equipment at the Boardwalk Mall on a busy strip near major amusement piers and shops. The opening planned for May 10 has generated plenty of buzz on its social media sites, owner Sean Doughtery told NJ Advance Media.

“It’s tremendous,” Dougherty said of the interest.

We like it, we love it, we want some more of it 🤠 Just a little walk through before our BIG announcement on Monday!... Posted by Wildwood’s HonkyTonk on  Saturday, April 27, 2024

The opening comes just ahead what should be a busy weekend in the Wildwoods with former Republican President Donald Trump hosting a rally on the beach on May 11 and Mother’s Day the following day.

Doors open at 5 p.m. on May 10 and the first live performance will kick off at 7 p.m. with additional live music start at 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday.

Honky Tonk adds to Doughtery’s inventory of investments in the local hospitality scene, including Capt’n Jack’s Island Grill, which is also located in the Boardwalk Mall space.

Dougherty and his investors recently purchased the 32,000-square-foot Boardwalk Mall building, which also includes retail shops

The building sold in August for $2.8 million, real estate records show.

Honky Tonk includes a stage for live music, emulating those common to Nashville’s bar scene. Photos have emerged online showing lights hanging from beams above the bar and blinking arcade games.

“Nashville, when you go down there, it just opens your eyes up to what a bar-restaurant with music can really do to a space,” Doughtery said.

The latest music venue shows the continued investment in the Wildwoods, according to the Greater Wildwoods Tourism Authority.

“The Wildwoods offer excellent opportunities for business success, and an unmet demand for business growth, with attractive commercial and residential real estate corridors that are perfectly located in a Jersey Shore seaside setting,” Louis Belasco, the authority’s executive director, said in a recent statement on the development.

Austin to Meet With Key Regional Allies on Upcoming Hawaii Trip

A person in a business suit stands with U.S. and Australian flags in the background.

Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III will meet with key regional allies this week as he travels to Hawaii to preside over the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command change of command ceremony.

Austin is expected to hold a series of engagements with his counterparts from Australia, Japan and the Philippines, further marking what defense officials say is historic progress toward regional security integration.

"Our partners across the region are drawing closer to each other, they're drawing closer to us and, together, we're doing more than ever to advance our shared vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific," a senior defense official said today while previewing the engagements.

On Thursday, Austin will meet with Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defense Richard Marles.

Two people wearing business suits shake hands.

The meeting follows Australia's announcement last week of its new national defense strategy which commits to a 20% increase in defense spending over the next decade.

The two leaders are expected to discuss U.S. force posture in Australia, as well as cooperation between the two countries to strengthen Australia's defense industrial base through the Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordinance Enterprise – a long term initiative to bolster research, development and manufacturing of critical weapons systems.

The defense official previewing the discussion underscored the close ties between the two officials, calling the Australian minister one of Austin's "most constant interlocutors, not just in the Indo-Pacific but around the world."

Spotlight: Focus on Indo-Pacific

Austin is also scheduled to meet with Japanese Minister of Defense Kihara Minoru. The meeting follows Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's official state visit to the U.S. last month where the two countries announced significant strides in strengthening defense cooperation.

In a joint news conference during the visit, President Joe Biden announced that the U.S., Japan and Australia will partner in creating a networked air defense architecture. The U.S. and U.K. will also be standing up trilateral military exercises with Japan, among other deliverables.

In the upcoming meeting, the two defense leaders are expected to expand upon discussions that include command and control, regional security, and the deepening cooperation between the U.S. and Japan on defense industrial and science and technology matters.

In his meetings with his counterparts, Austin is also expected to discuss U.S. force posture in Australia and Japan and security throughout the region.

Following the bilateral meetings with his counterparts, Austin will convene the 13th trilateral defense ministers' meeting among the U.S., Australia and Japan.

Officials described an agenda focusing on a range of regional topics and how the three countries can further expand initiatives aimed at peace and security throughout the Indo-Pacific.

The three leaders will also discuss cooperation on science and technology, and they are expected to sign a new trilateral agreement outlining cooperation on research, development, test and evaluation for strategic capabilities.

The agreement encourages standardization and interoperability on defense technology and aims to make the countries' already strong ties on science and technology more efficient and cost effective.

Austin will then host a quadrilateral meeting with the Philippines Secretary of National Defense Gilberto Teodoro and their Japanese and Australian counterparts.

The meeting marks the second-ever joint meeting among the four countries' defense ministers.

The defense leaders are expected to discuss ways to strengthen security among the four nations.

These discussions come at a critical time for defense cooperation throughout the region, a defense official said, noting China's recent harassment of Philippine vessels operating in the South China Sea.

"Japan and Australia have been some of our most vocal and staunchest allies in speaking up about the completely unacceptable nature of this behavior," the official said.

The official also noted the Philippines' efforts to highlight China's concerning behavior throughout the region.

"How we, as allies, not only operate together, but how we think about addressing the really worrisome operational behavior and coercion that we see taking place in a number of places across the region, is obviously a topic that we're going to focus on together," the official said.

On Friday, Austin will preside over the Indo-Pacom change of command ceremony.

During the ceremony, Austin is expected to recognize outgoing Indo-Pacom commander Navy Adm. John Aquilino's efforts that were instrumental in strengthening U.S. partnerships throughout the region.

Four military ships transit open waters in formation.

Austin will also recognize Aquilino's successor, Navy Adm. Samuel Paparo, and the thousands of U.S. service members who serve in the region.

Additionally, the secretary will have an opportunity to meet with the leaders of the Freely Associated States, which include the Marshall Islands, Micronesia and Palau.

J Bar Restaurant

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

We visited J with a friend of mine that lives in Kifissia. We were primarily focused in trying out the specialty tea blends, along with some light bites. The sitting area at the front of the house was very inviting, so we opted to be... seated outdoors. We got the Goji Acai blend, along with a toastie each. The blend was rich and very well balanced, with notes of hibiscus becoming evident from the first minute of brewing. The taste of the finished brew was well rounded, and the special teapot and teabag used for serving were ideal to preserve the aromas while brewing the tea. The toasties were also prepared and served very nicely, with a tasty layer of comforting butter and a side serving of crisps, respectively. Finally, after a quick visit to the bathroom I got to see the interior as well. It definitely matched the warm and inviting atmosphere of the atrium were we were seated. I'd love to come back during the winter, to sit on the indoor area as well, highly recommended! More

During my recent four day stay in Kifissia i visited J daily for coffee, pastries and lunch. They were all delivered to me on time and were of the highest quality, as always. Last but not least the staff there is amazing and went as... far as offering us free deserts and shots after our lunch there. I shall definitely return!!!!! Ps: Their chocolate tart is to die for More

Thanks for leaving us such a wonderful review! We are glad that you loved our services, our dedicated staff will be pleased to learn of your high praise. We are happy you enjoyed the food and we hope to see you again soon!

A nice place to eat/drink/relax. On a very nice location at Kifisia Area. Very cozy inside and outside. Nice menu and all dishes are delicious. We ate at the restaurant many times on our 7 days trip to Kifisia. I strongly recommend to have the... farfale pasta, probably one of the best pastas ever tried. Also value for money More

Nice cafe & bar with easy going atmosphere... We enjoy the cocktails and food. Will definitely be going back..

I love this place! The coffee is really nice and the food is perfect with a unique flavor. The service is great and friendly. Also the atmosphere is really cozy and the music is very good. I highly recommend this!!

J is the ideal place for a friendly drink or a delicious meal.in the morning it's the coolest place to have a cup of coffee or grab a bite at noon.great music great drinks the place to be all day long

My husband and I wanted to celebrate our anniversary at J. We are both non-smokers and had visited the restaurant 6 months before where we dined in the restaurant's non-smoking section. We were turned away this evening by a rude waiter who said that after... 9pm all the sections in the restaurant were for smokers. Isn't this illegal to say the least? When did the management of J decide to overrule the Greek laws that have designated areas for non-smokers in restaurants? More

Very nice place, friendly personnel, nice options and good tastes. Prices were a bit high but much better than options around it. Worth every penny though.

Thank you for visiting and taking the time to place this review! We are glad you enjoyed the food and the experience of J Bar Restaurant. We hope to see you again soon!

Classic destination in Kifissia region. Great service and kind people, good tastes, reservation needed for the weekends.

Thank you for taking the time to place this review. We love to hear about our great staff and services! We really appreciate it and hope to see you soon!

The waiters where rude the food mediocre at best and arrived 45' apart. The first people in our group ate 45 before the last when confronted the waiter was just rude.

Nice and chill environment that allows you to have a great time the way you want to. Really helpful staff is willing to do anything you ask for in order to please you. I totally recommend it. Also ask for a waiter named Giorgos, really... helpful guy! More

The food was good in general terms, the music a bit too loud for talking, the staff was OK, but the smoke!!! We smelled terrible when we got out and we left early because of it. It's good as a bar for smokers I guess...

All burgers ordered served raw. On pointing that ,they took it and brought the same half eaten back better cooked. Manager or cook never appeared. Waitresses very polite.

A nice all day cafe restaurant. The service is very good and the food is great, having a big variety and excellent quality.

Good music ,food and drinks. I was there on a Friday night. Excellent music , great atmosphere, I recommend it for a Friday night.
