Lagardère Travel Retail makes South American F&B debut at Santiago Airport
CHILE. Lagardère Travel Retail, in partnership with Chilean company Global Group Corporation (GGCorp) has opened five food & beverage outlets at Santiago de Chile Arturo Merino Benítez Airport. As reported , a new international terminal opened on Monday. These are Lagardère Travel Retail’s first F&B operations in South America.
The newly opened food concepts include popular Chilean brands La Maestranza, La Picá, Uncle Fletch, Lulupok and Yogen Früz. Three more will open soon, depending on traffic recovery: Krossbar, a beer and pizza concept, Kaki (Asian woks) and Beercode (beer concept). In total, Lagardère Travel Retail will run 20 restaurants at the airport, with 12 more to open before 2023., when the remodelling of the existing terminal is completed.
In line with Lagardère Travel Retail’s CSR commitments, the concepts have been developed to minimise environmental impact.
The company said in a statement: “From the sourcing of local food products and raw materials up to energy and waste management, we have enforced the highest standards of sustainable practices. We are also working to reduce our dependence on imports and have consequently developed strong partnerships with Chilean companies to support their local development and better promote local know-hows and expertise.
Practices to support the sustainability of its local operations include:
- Purchasing vegetables from the first vertical culture of Chile, free of pesticides and preservatives, and from one of the first circular economy-based vegetable producer
- Exclusively sourcing eggs from cage-free hens
- Working with several start-ups and small local suppliers who produce raw materials with renewable energy, or which support the circular economy
- Using compostable or recyclable packaging
- Gluten-free and vegan offer
- Recycling used frying oil
- Working with the commercial team of Arturo Benito Menitez Airport to develop sustainable solution for waste.
“We are very proud of these openings which took place in a very challenging environment and are thankful to our local partners who have worked hand in hand with us,” commented Juan Pablo Gana, General Manager of Lagardère Travel Retail Foodservices Chile.
He added: “This helped us to realise how important it is to be able to rely on local providers when imports are so uncertain.”
Lagardère Travel Retail said it will create over 380 new jobs locally by 2023 to play a part in the country’s post-pandemic recovery.

Lagardère Travel Retail Seizes New Growth Opportunities in South America by Winning Major Foodservice Tender in Chile
Lagardère Travel Retail has been successful in a tender initiated by Arturo-Merino-Benítez airport in Santiago de Chile to operate 20 Foodservice outlets, in partnership with Chilean company Global Group Corporation (GGCorp). These openings mark the first time Lagardère Travel Retail operates in South America and in Chile, a market which offers remarkable growth prospects for the company’s future regional development and in terms of regional and international air traffic.
“We’re delighted to be stepping foot in South America with a strong partnership with both the airport and GGCorp. The region offers very exciting prospects for growth that we are confident can be fully realized when the sanitary situation will be controlled. Arturo-Merino-Benítez proves it by investing into the future of its retail facilities and by modernizing its infrastructure. Most importantly this sends a strong signal of optimism on both parts: we get on with business because we are hopeful for a brighter future and want to be where the growth is.”
Lagardère Travel Retail and Global Group Corporation have been awarded a concession contract to build and run 20 Foodservice outlets at Arturo-Merino-Benítez airport in Santiago de Chile. The stores will be located in both the existing and new terminal of the airport, for a total commercial surface of 3,600 square meters and will be opening between July 2021, with the opening of the New International Terminal of Santiago Airport, and January 2022, when the existing Terminal will be remodeled. Lagardère Travel Retail and Global Group Corporation have formed a joint venture to run this new operation. Global Group Corporation, one of the four branches of Grupo GP Holding, is a Chilean leading corporation with long lasting expertise in advertising, F&B operations, parking system management and ground handling.
“We are very pleased to have the opportunity to work with Groupe ADP and VINCI Airports on the new terminal project in Santiago. Our company has been working for more than 17 years at Arturo Merino Benitez Airport in various businesses from advertising, with Massiva, to gastronomy with GGCorp. We are very proud to be partners of Lagardère Travel Retail and we are sure that together we will be able to improve the experience at the airport, which will have a capacity for 30 million passengers. We strongly believe in the airport industry and its early recovery.”
The winning proposal submitted by the partners includes a mix of international and local Foodservice concepts, as well as internal brands such as Natoo. A key success factor for this successful bid has been the ability to bring together the best of global and local, and to develop concepts that are truly representative of what the Chilean culture and cuisine have best to offer.
“The new international terminal of Arturo Merino Benítez Airport brought together two leaders in airport operations, such as Groupe ADP and VINCI Airports. This new infrastructure will not only allow us to lead Santiago airport into the front row of the region but also grow the connectivity of the country as we have already done in the past 5 years. We are very proud that Lagardère Travel Retail and Global Group Corporation will be part of this wonderful and successful project as we aim for excellence and success.”
Lagardère Travel Retail expects over 380 staff will be hired locally by 2023. Arturo-Merino-Benítez is one of South America’s busiest airports and has received 14 million of domestic passengers, and 11 million international passengers in 2019. The airport has done considerable efforts to modernize its infrastructure notably by building a new terminal – which will open to passengers in July 2021.

An additional 12 Foodservice outlets are expected to open before 2023, when the remodeling of the existing Terminal is completed.

The new outlets are the Group’s first operations in Latin America , to be followed by several F&B openings in Santiago de Chile’s airport.
Lagardère Travel Retail won exclusivity of duty-free operations at Jorge-Chávez international airport in July last year, with a long-term concession contract based on profits sharing. The deal marked the first large-scale realisation of the widely-discussed business model, which is said to better balance risks and benefits between parties as well as encouraging growth potential.
The three Aelia Duty Free stores have a combined commercial area of 3,000sqm in both departures and arrivals, stocking core categories, including travel accessories, souvenirs and snacking.
Lagardère Travel Retail says its “differentiating approach” is to combine the “highest international standards” with a commitment to promote and leverage local expertise and know-how. Over the next few months, it will work with LAP to leverage existing infrastructure and embed key features of the Aelia concept in the stores it is taking over.
In line with the airport’s renovation plan, Aelia Duty Free plans to feature a significant “sense of place” element with a range of local brands and products to give passengers a taste of Peruvian culture. Local products make up 15% of the total range. In total, 15 new local brands have been added to the portfolio with plans to add more than 20 new local brands in the coming months.
The new openings also come with a commitment to take on 20 young people from the “Tu Futuro” programme, developed by LAP in partnership with the Association Forge to promote the employment of the youth in the Callao region where the airport is located. More than 40 local suppliers have been referenced, staff uniforms and shops furniture are 100% manufactured locally.
And Lucio Benavente, Retail Manager at LAP added: “We are very glad to start operations of the Aelia Duty Free stores at Jorge Chávez Airport, hand in hand with an experienced and renowned company as Lagardère Travel Retail, also being a strategic partner for LAP’s business relationships and new business models. This alliance responds to our commitment to offer a unique and innovative experience to passengers, with rapid responses to user needs, adapting to the new and changing demands of the industry.”

Lagardère Travel Retail
2022 sales (million).
Lagardère Travel Retail posted €5,200 million in managed turnover across its three business lines in 2022, including joint-venture revenues and those from its important food & beverage division. Excluding the F&B component (€937 million), the figure for retail alone stands at €4,263 million, placing the company fourth in our rankings. Crucially, the Lagardère Group division also moved back into profit.
Revenues swung back to around -10% behind 2019 levels across a well-balanced portfolio. Duty free & fashion accounted for 38% of sales (35% in 2021), travel essentials 39% (43% in 2021) and food service 23% (22% in 2021).
Encouragingly, the momentum has continued in 2023, with all regions except France reaching revenues in Q1 on par with or ahead of the same period in 2019. North America and EMEA performed well, while Asia Pacific performance has accelerated from a low comparable base in Q1 2022.
There, China remains a key focus market, one in which the group has built a strong network in duty paid stores across air and rail channels.

The official boutiques, strategically located in Paris and Lyon, will offer a comprehensive range of products to travelers, allowing them to equip themselves with Paris 2024 items upon arrival and purchase unique souvenirs upon departure from France.
Seven boutiques in total are planned, with five already open at Lyon Saint Exupéry Airport, and in Paris, at Gare de Lyon, Gare du Nord, Châtelet-Les Halles RER metro station and Gare Montparnasse. The remaining two boutiques will be located at the esplanade of the Eiffel Tower and Gare de l’Est. The stores will offer a wide range of licensed Paris 2024 products, including fashion items for men, women, and children such as T-shirts, sweaters, and caps, as well as souvenirs like plush toys, mugs, and water bottles, along with travel bags and pillows.
In addition to the official boutiques, 200 strategically located Relay shops in train stations, metros, and airports in cities hosting Olympic competitions provide a comprehensive range of licensed Paris 2024 items which may vary depending on the store.
On top of selling Paris 2024 products, Relay shops embrace the Olympic Games through unique activations with partner brands Visa and Coca Cola (both official Olympic Games partners), allowing travelers to win tickets to attend the Olympic Games. In this way Relay reaffirms its commitment to providing travelers with more than just products to transform travel into enjoyable and personal experiences. This exclusive contract with OCOG reinforces Lagardère Travel Retail’s commitment to customers by offering local souvenir products at the heart of current events, confirming Relay’s ambition to stay one step ahead of travelers’ desires.
