Lively Lisbon
Our Lisbon Bike Tour shows off the best sights of the Portuguese capital! Cycle and through history as we discover Lisbon during the Phoenician times, nearly 3000 years ago, and the present, modern city. In between, see and learn about the transformation of the city from the Romans to the Barbarians, the Moorish people, and the dynasties of Portuguese Royal families. We’ll also touch on Salazar’s dictatorship which impacted half of the 20th century and has undoubtedly shaped modern Lisbon.
Throughout the tour, you will learn how and why the Portuguese pioneered the first global village, sailing off to the New World and connecting the furthest corners of the globe. Lisbon cycle tours ..
It's where we were born, where we grew up, where we live. It's the place we love!
Besides our love for our city, we also love bicycles, and believe it or not, Lisbon is one of the most incredible cities to bike in.
Lisbon is perfect but not easy, for that reason the best guides and our electric bike tours are waiting for you, just choose the tour!
Lisbon is the most important thing for us, without the city we wouldn't exist. It's very exciting to bike in the city, mostly her 7 hills, but it's not easy, like the city itself, she has her own character and is set on her ways with the stubborness typical of an old city. The guides are the most important element here at Lisbon Cycle Tours and without them what we do would not be possible, so dare to embark on this enormous adventure through her hills with us and our electrical bicycles.

Rolling hills & coastal views
Portugal bike tours.
Located in southwestern Europe, Portugal features over 528 miles (850 km) of pristine blue-water, sandy beaches and a sunny Mediterranean climate—the perfect atmosphere for cycling.
Lisbon boasts The Park of Nations, home to one of the largest estuaries in Europe, and is a smooth cycle ride. Pedal through Porto’s castles and sip world-famous Port wine of the River Douro.
The dedicated bike paths and side roads of the countryside have little traffic and allow cyclists to easily explore. Likewise, the rolling hills and quaint villages invite adventure and the stunning Algarve region boasts plentiful coastal views.
“The countryside was beautiful, with both challenging and gentle hills, and the people we met were friendly and helpful.”

Cycling Coastal Portugal | Porto to Lisbon

Porto, Aveiro,Lisbon
8 days − self guided, 3 & 4* hotels & country inns.
Ride alongside the Portuguese northern coast to arrive in Lisbon!
This self-guided bike tour is a beautiful journey down the Portuguese shoreline and visiting many cultural and historic sites. It links two of the main cities in Portugal, Porto, and its vibrant capital, Lisbon and many seaside places like Figueira da Foz and Óbidos, the walled town.
Enjoy Porto, a Unesco World Heritage City in Western Europe and learn about its famous wine and gastronomy, experience Aveiro, known as the Venice of Portugal, and arrive in Lisbon, a city that has served as inspiration for many artists, writers, photographers and filmmakers through the ages.
Admire its brightly coloured buildings straddling the slopes, striking ochre roofs, tile-covered building facades and narrow twisting alleys of the medieval districts. It is one of Europe’s finest capital cities and a great achievement to cycle to!
This was our second bike tour with Cycling Country and Portugal did not disappoint. Thank you again.”
Birmingham, England
Day 1. PORTO ARRIVAL
Arrive into Porto and to your hotel in this historic and fascinating city. Creating a bit of a buzz for itself, Porto has become a popular cultural place and you will enjoy your day exploring the Ribeira , the medieval centre and its many interesting buildings, cafes, galleries and shops. Gof for a walk riverside, seeing the Eiffel bridge or over to the Port Wine lodges on the southern bank, but be careful on your way home! Don’t over enjoy those lodges. A UNESCO Heritage city, you will be spoiled for choice here for what to do and that is true especially so for dinner, as the city has many fine Portuguese spots to dine.
Day 2. PORTO TO FURADOURO
Ride: 42 km | Elevation Gain: 77 m It is always nice to get out of the big city and your cycle today is a nice flat one, in which you will just fly along. Via many small towns hugging the coast with Umbrella fir trees and sandy beaches it is a pleasant ride. Heading towards Furadouro , surrounded by pine forests, you will enjoy this quiet ride and the town itself is a good base for the night.
Day 3. FURADOURO TO AVEIRO
Ride: 40 km | Elevation Gain: 40 m Another great day of flat cycling and through the nice Natural Reserve of Sao Jacinto with a small boat transfer. Aveiro is a popular day trip from Porto and it known as the Portuguese Venice with so many inlets and canals with brightly hand painted colourful boats called Moliceiro , used for collecting seaweed bobbing in the marinas. A thriving port through the Middle Ages due to vast sea salt pans which supplied the entire country, you still can visit these salt dunes today and soak in these medicinal properties. Very handsome pastel coloured homes line the streets and the old town is pretty around the fish market. Homes there are attractively tiled in those famous Portuguese Azulejos and there are some very nice examples of Art Nouveau in the town. You might want to try (or not!!) the town’s specialty of eels which are from the town’s lagoon.
Day 4. AVEIRO TO FIGEIRA DA FOZ
Ride: 35 km | Elevation Gain: 124 m A little bit harder cycling day today on your way to Lisbon with a small climb near the end of the day, but a lovely cycle nevertheless. You leave along the canal and reach the town of Mira and its quaint beachside fishing village. The fishing boats are very pretty with their curved bows, reminders of a Phoenician past and the villages along this coast was only settled in the 19th century due to piracy threats onwards from the Vikings.. The coast is long and impressive and stretches for miles here and you can have some marvellous seafood whilst you wait for your transfer to Figueira da Foz . Based on the Rio Mondego, it is a popular place for tourists due to its huge beach and has a lively atmosphere with its many outdoor plazas of cafes and restaurants.
Day 5. TO NAZARÉ
Ride: 81 km | Elevation Gain: 533 m This is a wonderful ride today (although your biggest day yet) along the sparkling Atlantic coast, and via what was the Pinhal de Leira pine forest . This “Royal Pine Forest” track was originally built in the 14th century by King Dinis, known as the farmer king, in order to build a barrier to the encroaching beach sands. It is a nice area of wildlife and an air infused with pine and sea saltiness. It is growing back after forest fires of years past but still a pleasant area to cycle. Today’s rolling route follows the Atlantic Road, designated cycling route, past the sentinel lighthouses through the Costa da Prata (Silver coast) to Nazaré , Portugal’s famous fishing town but one now most known for the massive waves that International surfers make their names on. Incredible views of the goliaths that come storming in, is from the upper part of town at the lighthouse overlooking the Atlantic. Try a fish dinner tonight, as it won’t come fresher than those served here.
Day 6. TO ÓBIDOS
Ride: 48 km | Elevation Gain: 460 m This is an exciting day of cycling starting along the Atlantic coast with a more touristic bent included. There is some climbing to do today but it is a charming route with beautiful vistas. You continue inland to medieval Óbidos , with a most enchanting blue and white tiled entrance, the Porta da Vila, through its solid fortified walls. The narrow winding cobbled streets lead up to the beautiful castle with its lovely rounded turrets. The village itself is delightful with flower pots spilling out of windows and bright colours on white-washed walls. In medieval times this place was so loved by the wife of King Dinis, that he gifted it to her. We hope you will feel the same way!
Day 7. LISBOA!
Get up early to wander this atmospheric place of Óbidos before your 11am transfer into the Capital city of Lisbon which rests on the Tagus river. One of Europe’s most vibrant and exciting places appealing to all with its romantic Alfama hillside district where the houses rest on top of each other in a most photogenic way and the modern day “medieval” castle tops it. The sights are many in this lovely city of World War II intrigue, medieval legends, art galleries galore and museums for everyone and without doubt, some world class food opportunities. Catch a tram over to the district of Belem and enjoy the stupendous UNESCO Heritage sites of the Jeronimos Monastery and 16th century Belem Tower the launch marker from which many Portuguese explorers left. Wander over and get a delicious Pastel de nata, cream tart, a real Portuguese favourite and perhaps visit the botanical gardens or even intriguing Carriage museum. This full day doesn’t even factor in, enjoying late night Fado music , a true cultural treat of this city!
Day 8. LISBON TO LISBON AIRPORT
We hate to say goodbye, and so will you for leaving this place really is a heartbreak. Or don’t stop and join us on our guided tour of the beautiful and traditional Alentejo area or keep self guiding all the way down the Blue Coast to the Algarve ! The choices are endless. Boa Viagem and we hope you enjoyed your trip down the West Coast!

A delightful collection of hotels accompany you on this bike tour along the Atlantic. An important part of the journey is where you lay your head after a great day’s cycle. Luckily these 4 star town and city hotels and historical family run spots will not disappoint.
The great stretch of beach outside your hotels, the charming villages to explore once you finish your day’s cycle trip, all will be an exciting part of your daily routine.
You will want to keep cycling on this Atlantic bike ride down Portugal’s beautiful coast!
“The end of our trip was great. We especially liked Obidos and our hotel. Our bikes worked well and were dependable. We really did enjoy the trip and we will return to Portugal in the future.” J. Palo – Oregon, USA – October 2023
“The trip was very good. The hotels and staff were all helpful. The hybrids were excellent. Pick up of goods/us all went smoothly. Good choice of hotels and a very interesting trip. Just too short! PS: The first day I discovered I had left my laptop in Porto. We had biked for about 45 minutes towards the next stop, but I turned around to go back to the hotel to get it. So my first day was not quite as relaxed as I’d hoped! Anyway at least it was a beautiful ride despite my memory loss… Thanks again for your help Maria. We’d like to do something like this again.” B. Jones – British Columbia, Canada – March 2023
“My wife and I really enjoyed our Porto to Lisbon bike tour- a great way to see Portugal’s coast and explore some great cities like Aveiro. Well organized, good equipment, and lovely hotels. We had good weather in mid-October.” T. Gainer – Portland, OR, USA – October 2021
“Amazing experience! My husband and I are back from our biking trip in Portugal with a suitcase full of wonderful memories. I would like to thank Cycling Country for the amazing organization that they provided to make our trip go as smoothly as it did. The bikes were very comfortable and in great condition (thank you for the special Dutch-style bikes – they were great!) and well equipped with emergency tools. They really thought of everything we might need along the road. The “Ride with GPS” navigation was very easy to follow and had lots of interesting tips and useful information. Also the hotels were all very nice and in great locations. In addition, the support we received before and during the trip was first class. Above all, the scenery was fantastic and the trails very varied along the coast, through beautiful parks and interesting places. I highly recommend both the trip and Cycling Country as the organizers.” E. Brager – Bethesda, MA, USA – September 2021
“Self-guided Porto to Lisbon tour – Great experience and very well organized! The selection of cities/towns and routes through Portugal’s central coast is varied and interesting. The route was not very challenging (mostly flat) and great for those who want a laid back ride, and kept us off main roads ( love not having to negotiate much car traffic!). Cycling Country was reliable, friendly and accommodating with good attention to detail. Hotels were solid, with some nice touches, like a few with spa amenities. We were especially grateful for their help with finding places for Covid tests for our return flight to the US. Our flight got canceled and they graciously made accommodations for us, much appreciated!” T. Eggers – Piedmont, CA, USA – July 2021

Straight Talk
We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
The slower pace, relaxed approach to life and old-world qualities in Portugal are some of the highlights of this spectacular region and are reflected in the hotels and restaurants on this trip. This said, service can lack a sense of urgency when compared with the service found in other parts of Europe. Additionally, while the Premiere hotels we've chosen are some of the finest in the country, they may seem a bit simpler than the Backroads European standard. The same can be said for Portuguese cuisine, which is traditionally a celebration of local flavors but is also bit more rustic than other places we visit in Europe.

Passport to Portugal: Six ways to dive into its culture

Few countries pack as much into one small space as Portugal . Neolithic carvings, Roman ruins and Moorish castles sit side-by-side with breathtaking mountain ranges, blue-flag beaches, canal-lined cities and enchanting villages.
Summer festivals pop up in otherwise quiet countryside towns and adventure sports alight on the coast and in the mountains, while artisan producers and makers fill shops, markets and homes with farm-to-table meals and hand-crafted wares.
Music, art, history and culture are interwoven into the fabric of the nation, making Portugal more than just a great place to visit – it’s a destination that literally has something for everyone.
Here are some of our favorite ways to take a deep dive into everything Portugalia.
Planning a trip to Portugal? Copy this weekend trip to Lisbon
Catch a Fado show in Coimbra
One of the first things that comes to mind when you think of Portugal is inevitably Fado. This unique music was born in the taverns of Lisbon , followed closely by a second genre of Fado that’s native to the north-central city of Coimbra .
Coimbra is home to the oldest Portuguese-language university in the world (whose dress code helped to inspire the Harry Potter school uniforms), where groups of students would gather in the streets to sing of love, longing and their beloved university.
Unlike Lisboa’s Fado, Coimbra’s Fado is meant to be sung outdoors, not in taverns, and the guitar is tuned lower to better fit the outdoor acoustics. The lyrics are poetic, well-rehearsed and typically more hopeful than the Lisboete style, and performers (who are all male) wear the requisite black university dress and cape to this day.
Catch a show at one of Coimbra’s most iconic Fado houses, like à Capella or Café Santa Cruz .
Delve into Portugal’s artistic traditions
The Portuguese countryside oozes cultural heritage, and you can visit its unique offerings in villages from the north to the south.
Stop by Podence or Lazarim during Carnival to see the Caretos dressed in their iconic colorful costumes or wooden devil masks or head down to Alentejo, where artisan craftsmanship is alive and well. At the local markets – some of which, like the monthly Azeitão Market, are events unto themselves – you’ll see age-old basketweaving, ceramics, leather and tapestry techniques on display (don’t forget to take home some souvenirs).
In the Portuguese art world, quality trumps quantity. You may not find massive art institutions here, but you will find galleries showcasing unique works from the past and present – including homegrown Portuguese legends. Check out the Museu Coleção Berardo in Lisbon’s Centro Cultural de Belém for some of the country’s most daring exhibits; in Cascais , a celebration of Paula Rego – one of Portugal’s finest postwar painters; and in Porto , the cutting-edge exhibits in the art-deco mansion of Sarralves .
From Globus | Art & Soul: Portugal By Design , No matter how you awaken your spirit in Portugal, with complimentary YourChoice Excursions, you choose how to be moved.
Eat your Heart Out
There’s another form of artisanal production that makes Portugal famous – and this one’s edible.
Take a trip through the flavors of the nation, munching on cheese from the Serra de Estrela ; olive oil from Alentejo; or canned sardines from Pinhais in Matosinhos – the only cannery whose process is still 100 percent artisanal (aka, they do everything by hand).
Small batch growers, local artisanal farmers and producers make wine, cheese, olive oil, honey, conserves, sweets and more, all over the country, with each product defining the region it came from.
There’s also wine from the Douro to be savored (or port wine from Porto, should you prefer), Nevadas from Pencova to munch on and the unmissable Pastel de Belém, sold just outside of the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos , where the delectable sweet was born.
Get Outdoors
After all that eating, you might be craving some time outdoors – and whether you’re looking to lie down on a beautiful, blue-flag beach, take a scenic hike through the hills or paddle into the Atlantic’s waters, Portugal’s got you covered.
Surf fanatics should visit the World Surf Reserve in Ericeria , see the WSL event in Supertubos in Peniche or watch the world’s largest wave break from Nazaré’s clifftops.
For those into trekking, take a walk on the breathtaking Rota Vicentina along Alentejo’s southern coastline or hike through the Peneda-Gerês National Park – one of the country’s best-kept secrets.
Beach lovers will of course flock to the Algarve’s sunny shores, but it would be a mistake to overlook the more authentic offerings along the shores of the Silver Coast – the less-crowed stretch of coastline between Ericeira and Porto, where Santa Cruz and Figueira da Foz are two all-time favorites.
From Globus | Taste of Portugal – From Porto to Lisbon, your senses are filled with visions of natural wonder, wonderful wines, tempting tastes and amazing artistry on this escorted tour.
Take in Some History
Now that you’re rested, it’s time to discover a bit more about Portugal’s past – which includes every major player from the Celtics to the Romans to the Moorish Empire. The best Roman ruins are found in Evora , a UNESCO World Heritage city and the capital of Alentejo. Evora’s 2,000-year-old Temple of Diana is one of the most important and iconic ruins in the country – although it’s dwarfed in size by the Roman ruins of Conímbriga , outside of Coimbra.
The Moors had their strongholds further South, where towns like Aljezur (whose name comes from the Arabic word aljezeer , meaning, ‘the island’) and Silves (home to one of the most complete Moorish castles) still bear their mark. In Mertola , near the coast of Spain, there is even an annual celebration of Moorish history and Arabic culture at the incredibly animated annual Islamic Festival.
Soak in the City of Light
Then of course there is the start and end to nearly any Portugal itinerary: Lisbon, the capital city, aka a Cidade de Luz (the City of Light.) They weren’t kidding, either. Lisbon's postcard-perfect panorama of cobbled alleyways, ancient ruins and white-domed cathedrals is a captivating scene crafted over centuries.
While you’re wandering through Barrio Alto’s narrow streets or strolling along the Tejo River, watch how the light reflects off the azulejo (ceramic tile) covered buildings and dances along the water. Enjoy a spectacular sunset from one of Lisbon's twenty miradouros (look out points), like the Miradouro de Santa Luzia or the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara .
From Globus | Portugal In Depth – From the granules of golden sand to the rich nuggets of history, this enlightening tour of Portugal introduces you to the brightest sights of the country.

If you have the time, add on the Azores Islands to your trip . Residents of this tiny archipelago have a slower, more friendly, authentic way of living, which makes for an unforgettable end to any Portuguese adventure.
