Now this district has become a new home for the refugees coming from Bangladesh. These people were rehabilitated during 1965 when the Dandakaranya Project was commenced. There are some amazing locations located in this district like Balimela Dam, Bonda Ghati or the abode of the Bonda tribe and Satiguda Dam. The Bonda tribe is often considered as the most vulnerable tribe in this country. Malkangiri is also having a power generation station right at Balimela. It's the corridor road for Vijaywada-Ranchi will also pass through this district.

Balimela

Balimela Dam is in Malkangiri District, which is 35 km, from the east of Malkangiri. A Hydro-electric Project has been established near about the Town jointly by the Government of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. A dam is being constructed at Chitrakonda, 25 km. from Balimela across the river Sileru. The total inflow into the reservoir is shared equally by the two Governments. The share of the Andhara Pradesh Government has flowed downstream the river while that of Odisha Government is diverted to a high head power some 15 km. south of Balimela.

Ammakunda

Ammakunda is one of the tourist places in Malkangiri district. It is situated at Khoirput Block near about 70 km from the district headquarter. This cool place embraces a natural waterfall and subsequent flow of water forming a narrow gorge. The fishes found in that gorge are quite friendly to the human being and are believed to be the form of Lord Vishnu in “Matsya Avatar” .

December is the the coldest part of the year with the average daily minumim temperature at 11.2°C. Both day and night temperature progressively increase after January till May which is the hottest month. On individual days in May and June before the onset of the mansoon maximum temperature may reach over 47°C. Therefore temperature decreases with the onset of the mansoon. During the mansoon, weather is cool and pleasent with day temperatures nearly the same as those in the cold seasons. Humidity is generally high especially in the mansoon and post mansoon months. In other months, afternoons are comparatively drier. Humidity varies widely between the mansoon months of July and August and the winter months of November and December. During the summer months winds are generally light and blow from directions mainly between south and west.During the pre-mansoon and mansoon seasons winds strengthen and blow from a south-westerly or westerly direction. In the post-mansoon and cold seasons winds are light and variable. The district is affected by depressions from the Bay of Bengal particularly in September and October that causes high wind and widespread heavy rain. A few high wind and thunderstorms occure in the pre-mansoon months.

Malkangiri is a city in Odisha (formerly Orissa).

Malkangiri is the district headquarter of Malkangiri District. This district is one of the newly created districts in the state of Odisha. It is situated in the southernmost tip of Odisha with the borders of Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh in near vicinity. Malkangiri lies in the Dandkarnya plains which extends from Chhattisgarh. This town used to be a sleepy hamlet but there is a lot of activity after it got converted into district headquarter. It has a lot of flora and fauna surrounding it and is a nature lovers delight. It has been in news for the ongoing Naxalite activity in places nearer to Malkangiri.
