  • "Wake Up The Moths is the sound of a craftsman at work, as intricate as a room full of carriage clocks. Beautiful, really."

  • “One of the albums of the year"
  • "Sparkles like a cool sweet cider sipped in a gentle summer breeze"
  • "[You Are The Healer] ... Gentle, acoustic, soulful pieces are interspersed with some funky, laid-back grooves... with occasional assistance from keyboard wizard Brian Augur. A warm and wonderful work."

matt deighton tour 2022

2021 finally sees the reemergence of British folk’s most enigmatic lost son. You may recognize Matt Deighton from his time fronting Acid Jazz heroes Mother Earth; you may remember him as Paul Weller’s guitarist in the late 90’s, or Noel Gallagher’s recommendation for who should replace him when he quit the European tour in 2000. Or maybe you don’t. For almost two decades, the man they keep calling the natural successor to Nick Drake, Davey Graham and John Martyn has been himself more of a rumour – a murmur among musicians, songwriters and diehard music lovers who proudly display his rare vinyl releases like trophies. The list of articles in the press and online has continued unabated, forever asking the same question: Where is Matt Deighton? As the Huffington Post discovered in their recent piece ‘The Resurrection of Matt Deighton’: He’s back. He’s been back a couple of times, and you missed him.

For those prospectors looking to pan the stream for a British Sugar Man, Matt’s discography shines like a diamond among the silt. ‘Villager’ was the subject a few years back of a Mojo ‘Buried Treasure’ feature and is oft hailed as a British folk classic; The Common Good is strewn with British music glitterati such as Paul Weller, Steve White, Mick Talbot and Marco Nelson; and the stunning You Are The Healer features Brian Auger among others. Matt is one of those rare artists that musicians simply want to be associated with. Tom Cox, who reviewed Wake Up The Moths for the Observer Music Monthly recently remarked in the sleeve notes for the vinyl reissue that his only regret when reviewing the album was that he felt his ‘measly four out of five star rating did it a disservice’. Add to that the four stars from Q and Mojo for his collaboration with Chris Sheehan ‘The Bench Connection’ in 2007 and you start to get the picture. That’s to say nothing of collaborations with Chris Difford, Dr John and Mighty Baby.

Having spent years trying to convince Bill Fay to come out of retirement – which resulted in the heavily critically acclaimed Life Is People (Matt assembled the band and played lead, which he also did for Countless Branches and Who Is The Sender) he accidentally convinced himself back in to the studio at the same time for The Family Silver with legendary Weller/Style Council and Who drummer Steve White, and Ocean Colour Scene bassist Damon Minchella. There then followed a whispered release of a lost classic written with Squeeze’s Chris Difford and recorded with Richard Causon, Kids Steal Feelings; and there were the almost invisible, yet fathoms deep ripples in the pond from his most recent, achingly beautiful album Doubtless Dauntless featuring musicians such as Gary Carpenter (he of The Wicker Man Soundtrack fame) and The Attractions’ Steve Nieve.

Matt Deighton’s stunning discography is an undiscovered island inhabited by a human being everyone wants to love and protect from the world around him. Matt’s is a story of genuinely great musicianship and songwriting; but most of all, of the beauty and fragility of one of Britain’s greatest lost talents and how life around him has sometimes shaped a fate beyond his control; but who has come back with something more beautiful every time the storm abated. Yes, Matt Deighton has returned and you probably never knew it. Well now you do; and as the Sunday Times declared – “…it’s impossible to imagine fans of Nick Drake of John Martyn not falling in love with him…”

If you’d like to send Matt a message about what his music means to you, email [email protected] and we’ll pass it on. This address won’t send replies though, just so you know!

matt deighton tour 2022

INTERVIEW: MATT DEIGHTON “The music world is brilliant, but it’s hit and miss”

“I don’t get anxiety on stage but I do get it before and after,” says Matt, his last live outing in London’s Kings Place in February a triumphant return to live playing following the release of his biographical Sky Arts documentary .

The documentary Overshadowed came as a long overdue introduction of Matt Deighton ’s vast talent to an unsuspecting but grateful television audience. Validation arrived and remains, and from his Welsh retreat today he is better able to survey the landscape and himself, far from the maddening effect of ‘the business’.

“The documentary did help me get an overview of what I’ve been up to all these years. I found it quite an emotional watch, seeing people I know like my wife and brother and friends say what they thought of me. I got quite tearful. Although Kevin [Lee Brown, the director] couldn’t get rid of my gut…”

The project was made with love, lending Matt a much needed pause for thought, one consequence being an emotional exhaustion arguably brought about by seeing his life flash before his eyes. But such a love letter can only heal and he has now returned refreshed and circumspect, with a clearer idea of his own place in the world as a recording artist.

As the autumn days shorten, he is taking to the road for an eleven-date tour of the UK. “Most of the venues I haven’t played before. My new booking agent, Midnight Mango… sounds a bit like a Captain Beefheart song, doesn’t it… has arranged something new this time. Ninety-five percent of the tour is going to be me with a guitar because I want to keep it subtle this time around. But for two of the nights Tom Mason will be on double bass and Steve White on drums.

“I think the scariest gig is going to be in Wrexham… because I know who will be coming. To be honest, I’m amazed that venues are still open after everything that’s happened. Things are back to normal, so it seems. Normality has resumed. At least that’s how it feels …”

His new album – which follows the incomparable Doubtless Dauntless of 2018 – is due for release next October and is entitled Today Become Forever and was recorded before the country’s dystopian hammer blow. Ken Scott ( David Bowie, Supertramp, Devo ) has produced three of the tracks, Snowlit Lovers being one. “On this new album I think Somewhere To Climb To is my favourite song to play. And I think I’ve invented a new open guitar tuning,” he laughs. “The tuning provided me with six songs. My wife is also singing Welsh on a song called Ruthless Grin ,” which he says was inspired by our robber baron political class. “The album’s waiting on a remix which, as ever, relies on funding.”

It would be some sort of crime if Matt were to cease writing and recording. Tuned to a higher frequency, he belongs to a lost musical age when a softer plaintive beauty once reigned. “I’d tried stopping [making music] once… it was worth trying if only to find out I don’t actually want to stop. Perhaps it was my dramatic way of stepping away from the plate, as Gregg Wallace would say, and leaving it all alone for a bit.” Something that wiser creatives know how to do. “But for the first time, earlier this year, I found I had an urge not to be songwriting or playing anymore. And I took comfort in it, a relief almost.” This makes him chuckle. “But now I’m writing and co-writing again, so I’m back in it.”

He’s long been a devotee of recording artists from the more obscure side of things, with the 1971 debut studio album, Colour Green , by German actress and singer-songwriter Sibylle Baier these days rarely far from his turntable. “It’s the most natural record I’ve heard. She recorded it for her children as a sort of night time music. It’s unique, quite Syd Barretty, quite odd, but recorded for her own enjoyment.” Much in keeping with Matt’s own ethos. “I also like Vashti Bunyan. I struggled at first with her music then realised it was brilliant. Laura Nyro too. Wonderful, quiet stuff. I’m after quieter music to listen to these days, music I can light the candles to in the evening.” Then comes another chuckle. “But I also like Part Chimp, who are absolutely and violently loud.”

He talks about how Joni Mitchell uses painting as a way to protect and preserve her artistic well-being, a pastime he too once enjoyed and which he says “had a beneficial effect on my songwriting”. Similarly, he reveals that he’s taking up a pottery class – something he has long wanted to do – before Christmas. As an aside he mentions that both his children are now singing and recording. “They have a good eclectic ear between them. It’d be good if they ended up making music. The music world is brilliant, but it’s hit and miss. I mean, if they started making music that would mean I could just listen to them. I could get out of the way.”

The Sky Arts retrospective of Matt’s career has undoubtedly re-energised him, so much so that he has also finished an album with Dr Robert of The Blow Monkeys. “I’m not sure when that might come out but I’m also working with Gary Carpenter [composer of The Wicker Man (1973)] and I’m co-writing with Kathryn Williams. So collaborative work is also keeping me going. I’ve liked working with everyone I’ve ever collaborated with musically and I’d still work with them all, but one person I would’ve liked to have worked with was Clive Palmer [of The Incredible String Band]. He was never up for stardom and was only into the authenticity of music. You know, getting it right and for the right reasons.”

Which is what Matt Deighton will also be remembered for come judgment day, with his own high bar set exactly where he wants it. “Getting down to doing what we do and getting a tune going is what it’s all about. I’ve got busy again. It’s actually the very first solo tour I’ve ever done. It’s usually been me winging it, playing venues sporadically, here and there, as and when.” This gets him thinking. He strokes his chin. “But I can’t actually think about playing live. You know, until I’m actually playing live.”

The stage is the thing, whereon he’ll catch the conscience of a king. It’s where he belongs, whether he likes it or not.

About Matt Deighton

b. England. Deighton is a familiar name on the UK music scene through his work with acid jazz favourites Mother Earth and his association with Paul Weller and Oasis. Additionally, he has established a minor solo career with a series of low-key but undeniably charming folk rock albums. Deighton initially made a name for himself in the mid-80s as a member of London-based indie rock band the Wolfhounds, before moving on to Mother Earth in the early 90s. As the band’s chief songwriter he was responsible for some of their most memorable songs, including the sublime ballad ‘Jesse’. In 1995, shortly before Mother Earth’s demise, Deighton released his solo debut Villager, a charming folk rock collection that earned admiring comparisons to the work of Richard Thompson. In 1997, he joined Paul Weller’s band for the Heavy Soul tour and remained as lead guitarist until late 1999. The following year Deighton issued his second solo album, You Are The Healer. Originally recorded in 1996 but delayed because of contractual difficulties, the album was reworked for release on the Yeaah! label and featured excellent keyboard work from UK music legend Brian Auger. In 2001, Deighton joined Oasis as Noel Gallagher’s temporary replacement on their world tour. Following his stint with Oasis, Deighton completed work on his new album, The Common Good, adopting a more electric approach than on his previous recordings. The same year, the four original members of Mother Earth reunited to play a series of live shows.

About Matt Deighton

Matt Deighton’s stunning discography tells a story of genuinely great musicianship and songwriting, but most of all, of the beauty and fragility of one of Britain’s greatest lost talents and how life around him has sometimes shaped a fate beyond his control. An artist who returns with something more beautiful every time the storm abates, 2021 saw the re-emergence of British folk’s most enigmatic lost son – a favourite among musicians, songwriters and diehard music lovers.

You may recognize Matt from his time fronting acid jazz heroes Mother Earth or as Paul Weller’s guitarist in the late 90s. Likened as the natural successor to Nick Drake, Davey Graham and John Martyn, Matt’s discography shines like a diamond among the silt – Villager was the subject of a Mojo ‘Buried Treasure’ feature and is oft hailed as a British folk classic.

‘It’s impossible to imagine fans of Nick Drake or John Martyn not falling in love with him…’

matt deighton

Matt Deighton’s stunning discography is an undiscovered island inhabited by a human being everyone wants to love and protect from the world around him. Matt’s is a story of genuinely great musicianship and songwriting; but most of all, of the beauty and fragility of one of Britain’s greatest lost talents and how life around him has sometimes shaped a fate beyond his control; but who has come back with something more beautiful every time the storm abated.

2021 saw the reemergence of British folk’s most enigmatic lost son.

That’s to say nothing of collaborations with Chris Difford, Dr John and Mighty Baby, Matt is indeed a force of nature.

Yes, Matt Deighton has returned and you probably never knew it. Well now you do; and as the Sunday Times declared – “…it’s impossible to imagine fans of Nick Drake of John Martyn not falling in love with him…”

That’s All Folk: Matt Deighton

Tickets no longer available.

2021 finally saw the reemergence of British folk’s most enigmatic lost son.

”A mellow folk-soul gem, shamefully overlooked… there’s clearly a sharp, undervalued talent at work.” – –Mojo 4/5

“It is impossible to imagine fans of Nick Drake and John Martyn not falling in love…” Sunday Times

M72 World Tour

matt deighton tour 2022

We told you about our new album 72 Seasons , so what’s next now that we’ve escaped the studio? Hit the road, of course! You want a tour, we’ve got a tour... how about two full years worth of shows?!?!

Over the past few years, we have been so inspired by the dedication and family/community vibe of the fans who traveled to San Francisco for our recent weekend celebrations, first in 2019 with the two S&M2 shows, followed by last year’s 40th Anniversary shows. On top of that, we had a blast being a part of the 2021 Wimmer Festivals when we played two nights in one city, each with a totally different setlist. With all of that in mind, the M72 tour was born!

Starting in April of 2023, we’ll be visiting 22 different cities around the world and playing two nights in each city, with each “No Repeat Weekend” show a completely unique experience: Two totally different set lists with two different bands opening the show each night! Purchase a two-day ticket, and you won’t see the same song twice for a total of over 30 songs spanning our 40+ years of being lucky enough to make music. Most of the shows (sorry, not all - we tried!) will be on Fridays and Sundays, so we’ll be sure to have lots of extracurricular events for you to hang with fellow Metallica fans at before the shows kick-off and on the Saturday night in between.

Presented worldwide by Liquid Death and Blackened American Whiskey (in North America only), and brought to you by our friends at Live Nation, the M72 tour also launches a completely different look for us in stadiums – we’ll be in the round in the middle of the field. On top of that, the Snake Pit has been relocated to the center of the stage so that fans there will have a complete 360 view of the show. Each weekend offers a variety of Enhanced Experiences , ranging from access to a meet and greet, production and stage tour, food and beverage in the “Black Box” lounge to early entry into the venue and the aforementioned Snake Pit. The very popular “Black Laminate” is back, now known as the “I Disappear Ticket,” and is the ultimate pass for the fan who wants to run away with us for multiple weekends. Grab one of these and attend every show on your continent or in the world! For more information about Enhanced Experiences and I Disappear Tickets, visit wearesuper.co/metallica .

In keeping with the theme of two completely unique shows each weekend, we’re excited to share the stage with different bands each night, including some we have traveled with before and new friends who are joining us for the first time. Signing up for the entire adventure with us are Five Finger Death Punch, Ice Nine Kills, and MammothWVH, and some of you will see Pantera, Architects, Greta Van Fleet, or Volbeat, depending on the shows you attend. All the details are in the listing of dates below and on the individual show pages.

Two-day discounted tickets will be on sale Friday, December 2, for all shows. Fan Club presales start early on Wednesday, November 30, with various other presales beginning later that day and throughout the week. To request your Fan Club presale code, visit metallica.com/presale-code . If you cannot join us for the entire weekend, single-day tickets will be available starting January 20, 2023.

A portion of proceeds from every ticket sold will go to the band’s All Within My Hands foundation. Founded in 2017, AWMH’s efforts to assist and enrich the lives of members of the communities who have supported the band have raised nearly $13 million – providing $5.9 million in grants to career and technical education programs in the US, over $2.5 million to combat food insecurity, and more than $3.2 million to disaster relief efforts worldwide.

We cannot wait to embark on this new adventure, play some new music, and spend our weekends in ’23 and ’24 with YOU!

Show 1 Support Europe: Architects & Mammoth WVH ** Show 2 Support Europe: Five Finger Death Punch & Ice Nine Kills * Five Finger Death Punch & Ice Nine Kills play Show 1 in Paris, Architects & Mammoth WVH play Show 2 in Paris ** Volbeat replaces Architects on Show 1 in Gothenburg

Show 1 Support North America: Pantera & Mammoth WVH *** Show 2 Support North America: Five Finger Death Punch & Ice Nine Kills *** Greta Van Fleet replaces Pantera on show 1 both weekends in Mexico City

Got a question about the M72 World Tour? Look for the answer in our FAQ.

Citi is the official card of the M72 Tour. Citi cardmembers will have access to presale tickets in the U.S. beginning Wednesday, November 30 at 2:00 pm local time until Thursday, December 1 at 10:00 pm local time through the Citi Entertainment program. Why Schedule a Campus Visit?

You’re making an important decision. You’ve browsed our website, reviewed brochures and done your research. Still, getting a feel for campus can help you make your final choice. Take in the culture and our Moscow location, experience life in the dorms and dining halls and see where you’ll be learning. Begin to see yourself at U of I with a campus visit.

Confirm your initial impression. If research grabs your attention, a campus visit goes beyond. Determine if you feel at home as a Vandal and if a particular program of study is right for you. Use your visit or campus tour to meet professors and other students, narrow down your list of majors and make a definite decision once you receive your acceptance letter in the spring.

Make the Most of Your Campus Visit

You’ve heard this advice before — don’t just look at buildings. Instead, keep the following in mind whether you’re attending an event, campus tour or a virtual session:

  • When to schedule your visit: Check out our Moscow campus as students attend class, engage in research and go about their day-to-day lives as Vandals. Ideally, attend a tour before submitting your application, preferably in the spring of your junior year or early fall of your senior year.
  • Be ready to ask questions: Make a list ahead of time to ask your tour guide, admissions counselor and students you see around campus.
  • Consider multiple campus visits: Start virtually to get a feel for our campus. Then, to get a more personal perspective, consider attending an on-campus visit. Here, opt for a student-guided campus tour, and schedule in visits with schools or departments for programs you’re curious about.
  • Take notes: What makes U of I unique? How does being a Vandal resonate with you? Document your visit with notes and photos to reference later.
  • Prepare ahead of time: Avoid attending a campus visit on a whim. Instead, schedule your visit in advance, make plans for a college or program visit, explore our virtual resources, review a map to understand the layout of our campus and make travel arrangements. Additionally, continue your research to ask questions during your visit.

Have Questions About Visiting University of Idaho?

Programme TV du jeudi 30 mai : « A Gentleman in Moscow », « Rosy », « Cassandre »…

Showtime/Viacom International

SÉRIE. Ewan McGregor fait des étincelles

« A Gentleman in Moscow », à 21h10 sur Canal +.
