Misfits Announce Three 2023 Shows, Megadeth + AFI Among Opening Acts

Horror punk legends the Misfits have just announced three 2023 shows, featuring different special guests at each stop with Megadeth and AFI being among those tabbed to open.

The number of gigs now on the books equals the total amount of shows the band played across 2021 and 2022, meaning it's another rare chance for fans to catch one of punk's biggest acts of all time.

Since coming back in 2016 as the Original Misfits  (featuring original singer and songwriter Glenn Danzig and original bassist Jerry Only , as well as guitarists Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein and Acey Slade in addition to drummer Dave Lombardo ), the group has only performed 16 times, the first being at Riot Fest in Denver, Colorado.

The new dates are set for June 24 (Megadeth and Fear as support), July 8 ( The Gaslight Anthem and Fear as support) and July 15 (AFI and Fear as support) and you can view more details further down the page.

Members of the Misfits Fiend Club will have the first opportunity to grab tickets through an exclusive pre-sale that runs from March 22 at 10AM ET through March 23 at 10PM ET. The band indicates fans can use the password FIEND   to score early tickets at the corresponding ticket links to each show as listed below.

Look for the general on-sale to being on March 24 at 10AM local time at Live Nation .

Misfits has confirmed details of three new shows in the US to take place across the summer.

The punk legends will perform their first show of the year in Tampa, Florida, on June 24. They will then play two further dates in July, journeying to Newark, New Jersey, and Phoenix, Arizona.

Fear will open for the band across all dates, while Megadeth will join them in support in Tampa. The Gaslight Anthem will also perform in Newark, while AFI will complete the bill in Phoenix.

‘Rising’: Rainbow Soar A Second Time With A Classic Metal Album

Best nine inch nails songs: essential trent reznor tracks, ‘master of puppets’: an album of firsts and lasts for metallica.

Members of the Misfits Fiend Club will be able to gain early access to tickets during an exclusive pre-sale. It will open at 10am ET on March 22 and run through 10pm ET on March 23. Tickets will then go on general sale at 10am local time on March 24 and will be available to purchase here .

The new shows follow Misfits ringing in the new year with a special New Year’s Eve concert in Las Vegas . That gig was the latest in a number of recent appearances – in October, the band celebrated Halloween in Dallas with special guests Alice Cooper and The Distillers, while it also headlined Chicago’s Riot Fest in September.

However, since singer Glenn Danzig and bassist Jerry Only settled their decades-old feud to reunite the band’s classic members in 2016, the Original Misfits have only played a total of 14 shows in six years.

Danzig has suggested that the band will not embark on a more traditional tour, only playing gigs here and there. “I don’t think I’m going to tour anymore,” he told Revolver last year. “I’m just going to fly out to a show here or there. I’ll maybe be down to do some one-offs. But I just don’t see myself getting on a tour bus anymore…I think I’m done.”

Last September, MISFITS headlined Riot Fest 2022 in Chicago, performing their landmark first album "Walk Among Us" in full for its 40th anniversary.

The initial comeback performance by MISFITS members Danzig , Only and Von Frankenstein took place at the 2016 Riot Fest . The estranged bandmates played together for the first time since 1983 and were backed by former SLAYER drummer Dave Lombardo and guitarist Acey Slade .

Since then, the original lineup of the MISFITS has reunited for scattered dates, with the latest one taking place on October 29, 2022 at Dos Equis Pavilion in Dallas, Texas.

Prior to the Riot Fest concerts, Glenn , Jerry and Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein last performed together on October 29, 1983.

Three years ago, Danzig told Rolling Stone magazine that he was happy with the way the MISFITS shows have been going. "Shit, we sold out Madison Square Garden," he said. "As a matter of fact, we oversold it. Back in the day, all the bigwig promoters and record label people were, like, 'A punk band will never headline Madison Square Garden.' And, of course, we're the first punk band to headline there. And not only did we sell it out, we oversold it. So a big fuck you to all those assholes, who are probably selling hotdogs on Sixth Avenue."

The original MISFITS band broke up in 1983, and Only brought forth a new version of the MISFITS in 1995. Various members have come and gone, but Only , along with BLACK FLAG 's Dez Cadena , has kept some form of the MISFITS in the recording studio and on the road for most of the last two and half decades.

In a 2016 interview with Rolling Stone , Only said about working with Danzig again: " Glenn is Glenn . We dealt with Glenn in the beginning and it's the same dealing with Glenn now. It doesn't change. It's just a different perspective. If we let Glenn be Glenn and do what we're supposed to do, it's gonna work. You don't argue with each other. I think we're over that. I think we're old enough now."

Asked what it was like keeping the MISFITS going for 20 years without Glenn , Only said: "There was always that hole. When Glenn split, there was always that feeling we were missing a component of what makes us what we are. And I'm sure the same goes on for him. In the other bands he was in, he's changed people left and right. When we play together, it's just us."

Ever since legendary Horror Punk band Misfits reunited with the vocalist Glenn Danzig in 2016, they have been playing a few concerts every year. They announced the first dates scheduled for 2023 that will happen in Florida, New Jersey and Arizona next June and July.

At those shows they will have as special guests Megadeth, Fear, AFI and The Gaslight Anthem.

The band’s current line-up has Glenn Danzig (Vocals), Jerry Only (Bass), Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankestein (Guitar), Acey Slade (Guitar) and Dave Lombardo (Drums).

Misfits 2023 tour dates

  • 24 – Tampa, FL – MIDFLORIDA Credit Union Amphitheatre (With Megadeth and Fear as special guests)
  • 8 – Newark, NJ – Prudential Center (With The Gaslight Anthem and Fear as special guests)
  • 15 – Phoenix, AZ – Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre (With AFI and Fear as special guests)

Even though the band usually play less than 10 concerts every year, more dates might be announced since they are usually more active close to Halloween time.

Possible Misfits setlist

Since the band had not released new material with Glenn Danzig since the 80s, the setlist might be quite similar to the one the band performed during the last years. An example is the one from Aftershock Festival back in 2021.

The early Misfits developed an underground following and released two studio albums, “Walk Among Us” and “Earth A.D./Wolfs Blood.” Their influence grew after they disbanded in 1983, with the likes of Metallica and Guns ‘N Roses covering their songs.

Danzig went on to success fronting Samhain and his eponymous metal band, and Only revived the Misfits in 1995.

Danzig unsuccesfully sued Only over merchandise earnings in 2014. However, the lawsuit led to his reunion with Only and Doyle, and they have been performing sporadically as the Original Misfits since 2016.

"We were something you couldn’t cage. You’d get skinheads beating the crap outta each other in front of the stage." The chaotic story of Misfits’ horror-punk classic Earth A.D./Wolfsblood

1983’s Earth A.D./Wolsblood album showed off Misfits at their fastest and most vicious – but it would become their gravestone

Misfits performing live in the early 80s

Little known outside of US punk circles during their original six-year run in the late 70s and early 80s, the patronage of Metallica helped New Jersey devils Misfits become one of rock’s greatest cult bands. In 2008, bassist Jerry Only talked Metal Hammer through the turbulent creation of their iconic 1983 album, Earth A.D./Wolfsblood – the record that would tear the band apart.

With their distinctive ‘devilock’ fringes, instantly recognisable Crimson Ghost mascot and obsession with the darker end of US culture, New Jersey horror-punks Misfits were a Herschell Gordon Lewis B-movie made flesh. Across their short but eventful career, they released two groundbreaking albums that would go on to inspire some of punk and metal’s biggest names - most notably Metallica – before flaming out in acrimony.

Misfits were formed in 1977 by Lodi, New Jersey native Glenn Anzalone, a 22-year-old fan of comic books, wrestling, Elvis Presley and The Doors. The band name came from Marilyn Monroe’s infamously ill-fated final movie The Misfits , while Anzalone renamed himself Glenn Danzig - reportedly a family surname, but also the former name of the city attacked by the Nazis in September 1939, sparking off World War II (known today as Gdansk).

“When you went into New York, everybody was shootin’ dope,” says bassist Jerry Only (born Jerry Caiafa), who joined soon after the band was formed. “It was a heavy narcotic scene. I wasn’t about that. That’s why we came up with the horror thing. We loved horror films, sci-fi, B-movies. We weren’t drug-shootin’ beatnik Bowery Boys.”

Initial line-ups were fluid, with guitarists and drummers coming and going. Misfits’ 1978 debut single, the oddball art rock of Cough/Cool , featured Danzig playing piano in lieu of a guitarist. Cough/Cool was released on Danzig’s own label, Blank. When Mercury Records decided they wanted to set up their own subsidiary, also named Blank, they offered Misfits 30 hours of studio time.

Misfits performing live in the early 80s

Enlisting guitarist Franché Coma and drummer Jimmy ‘Mr Jim’ Catania, the band recorded the Static Age album… only to shelve it after they were unable to find a label who would release it. Four tracks appeared on 1979’s Bullet EP, released via Danzig’s new Plan 9 imprint (named, naturally, after cult director Ed Wood’s Plan 9 From Outer Space movie), and other Static Age songs cropped up on later compilations, but the original album wasn’t released until 1997, long after the original line-up had split.

Over the next few years, there were more line-up changes. By the time they recorded 1982’s Walk Among Us , they had been joined on guitar by Jerry Only’s hulking brother Doyle – aka Paul Caiafa – and drummer Arthur Googy. Released via US indie label Slash, Walk Among Us defined the goth-edged punk rock sound that set them apart – one part Ramones, one part Roger Corman, played by glowering, be-muscled gravediggers.

“We were something you couldn’t cage,” says Jerry. “Our shows got crazy. You’d get skinheads jumping around, beating the crap outta each other in front of the stage.”

Things intensified even further on 1983’s Earth A.D./Wolfsblood . Plugging into the booming hardcore movement, it floored the pedal, cramming 9 songs into just 15 minutes on its US original version (international versions added two more songs, Walk Among Us leftover Die, Die My Darling plus We Bite , taking the running time up to a hefty 21 minutes). Sessions for the album were no less rushed.

”We did it right after a show at the Santa Monica Civic Center [in December 1982], which featured the Misfits and a Black Flag reunion,” says Jerry. “We recorded all the music for that album right from midnight to six in the morning. Complete.

“Glenn slept through the entire recording session, but I woke him up long enough for him to say, ’Mommy can I go out and kill tonight?’, to start off the song of that title. The rest of us kick in right after he says that line, so we needed it down on tape for the proper timing. Glenn did do some vocal overdubs in July 1983, but in reality the whole album was done during that one session.”

The man chosen to produce the project was Spot (real name: Glenn Lockett). As in-house producer for the SST label, he’d worked with bands such as Black Flag, doom pioneers Saint Vitus and Minneapolis hardcore trailblazers Hüsker Dü.

“We all wanted to work with him, because he had done a good job on the Black Flag stuff. But Spot also worked the live show at the Civic that night; he organised the recording session afterwards, in the only time slot that was available at the studio.”

The music on Earth A.D./Wolfsblood was a breathless rush of buzzsaw punk, though their lyrical preoccupation with schlock-horror subjects remained on songs such as Mommy, Can I Go Out And Kill Tonight? , Demonomania, Green Hell and Die, Die My Darling , the latter two subsequently covered by Metallica.

Yet trouble was brewing behind the scenes. As plans were being laid for the new album, Danzig himself was becoming increasingly agitated by the Misfits’ situation, and was said to be plotting his next band. According to rumours, the singer actually wrote two songs specifically for this new project – Death Comes Ripping and Bloodfeast – though these were repurposed for Earth A.D./Wolfsblood .

“I have to say that we had no idea Glenn was putting together this new band at all,” says Only. “Were those tracks intended for Samhain, and not for us? I don’t recall that being the case. In fact, we never got the impression that he might be deliberately holding back certain songs from us.”

The band themselves had other things to worry about. While on tour in New Orleans in October 1982, they were arrested for grave robbing. It was alleged that they’d broken into a cemetery while searching for the burial site of famed 19th century voodoo queen Marie Laveau, something Only denies.

“We spent the night in jail, and then bailed ourselves out,” says the bassist. “But we jumped the court appearance to play a show in Florida.”

All of this added to the mystery and myth surrounding Misfits. A lot was expected from the Earth A.D./Wolfsblood album when it was finally released in December 1983. There was just one problem - the band had already broken up.

The problems stretched back to the departure of Arthur Googy. A string of replacements proved to be ill-suited. When the chance to tour in Germany in the autumn of 1983, Only suggested the drummer-less band reinstate Googy.

“Two weeks before we left, I told Glenn that as far as I was concerned it was Googy or nothing,” says the bassist. “Glenn chose nothing.”

They managed one final show, in Trenton, New Jersey in November 1983, but that was it. Misfits were deader than Dracula with a stake through his heart. Thankfully, though, Earth A.D./Wolfsblood didn’t go the way of Static Age . Danzig released the album posthumously a month after the band’s split via his Plan 9 label

In the wake of Misfits’ dissolution, the singer launched Samhain, doubling down on the ‘goth’ part of the ‘goth-punk’ equation. By 1987, they had transformed into the eponymously-named Danzig, with the man himself carving out a reputation as the Satanic Jim Morrison, or the ‘Evil Elvis’, as he was nicknamed in the press.

Jerry Only and Doyle would form the short-lived, and bizarre, Christian metal band Kryst The Conqueror with singer Jeff Scott Soto, exchanging the occasional barb in the press with their former bandmate Danzig. In 1995, the brothers relaunched Misfits with new singer Michale Graves and drummer Dr Chud.

The bassist would weather continual line-up changes – including the departure of Graves and Doyle – to keep the Crimson Ghost flag flying until 2016, when, unexpectedly, the classic trio of Danzig, Only and Doyle would put aside their differences to reunite for a series of live shows. They‘re still playing live to this day, though no new music has been forthcoming.

And what of Earth A.D./Wolfsblood , the early 80s punk classic that acted as a gravestone for the original Misfits line-up? It remains a touchstone for countless bands, from longtime Misfits cheerleaders Metallica to the likes of Killswitch Engage, AFI and Cradle Of Filth. Jerry Only himself has mixed feelings about the album.

“It’s not so much that I don’t like the record or the material,” he says. “It’s that I’ve never been happy with the mix. I know there’s a lot missing that should have been included from our original recordings. There are also things that could have been mixed differently and, in my opinion, the album we recorded could have sounded more aggressive than the one that was finally released. But it was revolutionary, groundbreaking and totally a garage type recording.”

Misfits Boxing’s Man Behind the Decks: DJ Fricktion

  • Author: Charlie Cater

Misfits Boxing burst onto the live event scene back in August 2022, where YouTube star KSI pulled off the incredible “2 fights 1 night”. Since then, Misfits Boxing events have been a spectacle in the Social Media world, bringing in millions of views across all platforms, and almost taking over TikTok every single fight night. While many fans think solely about the fighters, there’s another element to every event that is extremely important. Music.

We spoke to Misfits Boxing’s Resident DJ, DJ Fricktion, about everything Misfits, how he keeps the crowd engaged, and who he thinks is the best Influencer Boxer in the world.

So tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got involved in DJing and Music.

"I grew up in Dudley near Birmingham and started DJing when I was like 14 in high school. A few years later I moved to London to study music for my degree at Greenwich University and then I spent some time after university at a college in London called Point Blank Music College. After that I spent some time teaching music and DJing, so I've always been around DJing and Music Production. I spent a lot of time DJing in the West End in London, Internationally as well and making music in my studio."

DJ Fricktion

Fricktion is also a producer and has produced for some pretty big names like Chris Brown and recently did Potter Payper’s new single - Midas, but he's neither a DJ first or a Producer first.

So how did you become the Misfits DJ? I hear you and Mams Taylor are pretty close friends.

"That’s correct. Mams is one of my closest friends of almost 20 years. I think many people don't actually know that we're so close. We've got this brotherhood and both have been integrated into each other's careers over the last 2 decades. When Misfits started up the conversation regarding music came up and it was a no brainer for me when I was asked."

In the high pressure environment of a live event that can last upwards of six or seven hours, sometimes more in terms of the Prime Card, you’d think that the music was completely planned in advance. However, that’s not the case. Fricktion likes to manage the music on the fly, responding to the crowd's energy to deliver the best experience possible.

"The music that I play in between rounds and fights isn’t always planned other than the actual ringwalk music for the fighters which we rehearse. I have an idea of what I'm going to play and I know what's definitely going to work and get a good reaction from the crowd. Your Sweet Carolines, etc, they're kind of guaranteed to get people going. So I have my folder of those kind of records that are just arena anthems, but in terms of the other stuff, I kind of freestyle it and try to feed off the energy of the crowd. Some music works better in different locations for e.g. when I played in Nashville I played more popular country music opposed to lets say Sheffield where I dropped a few UK house bangers."

I also see you dropped a few songs by South Asian artists which have gone viral on social media. Tell us a little bit about that.

"Of course! I try to regularly include music from so many different backgrounds including my own as the crowd is so diverse which I love. I’m Indian and I’m a big advocate for the uprise in Asian Talent experimenting with Rnb, Hip Hop sounds in recent years such as Sidhu Moosewala (RIP), AP Dhillon and Chani Nattan etc. Initially I think people were shocked that Sidhu Moosewala was being played and then it eventually caught on which was cool af!"

Ring Walks are a massive part of every single Boxing event, and can potentially make a massive difference to the mental side of a fighter before they step in the ring. Talk us through the process of choosing the ringwalk music.

"Well the ringwalks are chosen by the fighters and their teams, so I’m given a list beforehand and then it’s on me to source the music unless the fighter himself has their own edit. Like the music, I also play the ringwalks for the fighters. I constantly have to be alert at all times because there's so much happening and the timing has to be perfect. The timing on those entrances have to be spot on because it has to be timed to the lighting, to the cue point of another song or entrance etc. There’s really a lot of work that goes into putting on these events by the entire team."

What’s been your favourite ringwalk(s) so far?

"My favorite ring walk has to be KSI’s entrance at the Prime Card. He had a Lamborghini, then he had the landlord Giggs perform the national anthem. That was special! But I really like some of Slim’s entrances because he comes out to some unorthodox music and also Pineda’s Undertaker Entrance."

Misfits Boxing returns to our screens on March 23, 2024, where we’ll see the first ever Outnumbered match as Fox the G takes on the Most Evil Tag Team in Nashville, Tennessee. The fights are sure to bring the hype, but with Fricktion behind the decks, we can be sure to expect an incredible event.
