Wonderful and Knowledgable Tour Guide…A Must Do, when visiting Old Town, Mombassa

“ Humphrey came highly recommended from a good friend of ours who grew up in Mombasa. Everything went smooth and according to plan – When we arrived in Old Town, Humphrey was there to meet us, he gave us the details of the tour, was patient and explained everything we saw, and answered all of our questions. Hands down, I would definitely hire Humphrey again and recommend him to any and all visitors to Old Town Mombasa who want an easy, hassle free, in-depth tour of the area. Do yourselves a favor and book with him! “

Incredible tour.

“ Humphrey was an incredible guide who provided great detail about Fort Jesus and Olde Town. I learned a lot and would definitely recommend him for a guided an informative tour!”

Loved the history of Fort Jesus

Humphrey was a very knowledgable guide and I enjoyed our time in Fort Jesus. He knew the history of the place very well and was able to answer my questions. Walking around the various parts of Old Town Mombasa he was able to point out all the places of note and it was very interesting.

Humphrey was a nice gentleman and looked after me well, this is very important as a single female travelling alone.

Great experience in old town of Mombasa

Excellent experience. Humphrey had a wide knowledge of the Fort Jesus and the old town. We walked around for four hours. And I managed to do some good shopping at Spice Market (highly recommended for gifts such as tea, coffee and spices), the first fish market of Mombasa, the first luxury hotel in Mombasa from 1901, the first post office of Kenya, and the first mosque. I also learned about the differences in architecture in the town.

See below for some of our guests’ common questions. Have something else you’d like to access?

What is the difference between the two tours?

We have 2 different tours. The ½ Day Mombasa Walking Tour is focused in Old Town Mombasa and around Fort Jesus. Our Full-Day City Tour includes the same walking tour, along with transportation to Haller Park and Akamba Handicraft for an even fuller experience. Don’t miss out!

Do we stop for any breaks?

We aim to do the Mombasa Walking Tour in between 2 and 4 hours. There is plenty to see in the Fort Jesus Museum and around Old Town, and our guests are always filled with questions, so it’s paced leisurely.

Is the Mombasa Walking Tour safe (Relating to covid 19)?

Yes, it is very safe. Humphrey will have his mask, and you are welcome to keep yours on as well. The majority is outdoors and in well-ventilated areas, though if you’d like to wear it for more crowded, indoor spots like the Fort Jesus Museum, you are more than welcome to.

Can we tip the guide Corona-safely?

You are still welcome to tip in cash, though we can also accept tips through PayPal if you’re looking for a contact-free payment option.

Is wearing a face mask mandatory?

In crowded places, as well as indoor areas, wearing a face mask is recommended. For all tours we ask you to bring your own masks, in case we encounter a busy street or an indoor sighting.

Andrew had suggested great accommodations and we were delighted when we arrived at Voi wildlife lodge. Right by the restaurant there were two waterholes that the elephants came to. We could sit and watch them drink water and bathe. In the evening a hippo emerged from the watehole. We have seen many beautiful wild animals on the Safari. Andrew and the driver, Thomas, have shown a great knowledge of the animals and the areas where they live. Thomas had a falcon’s eye and drove us to the right places. Thank you very much for the experiences with the animals. After days of Safari we went back to Mombasa. There we ended our holiday at a fantastic hotel with relaxation and swimming. Pathway Safaris have given us great memories to last a lifetime. Read more Written 9 October 2023
  • Marley-4444 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Holiday of a lifetime! A safari holiday was a bucket list holiday for me and my mum. We spent a week in Kenya with pathway safaris. The whole team were amazing! We had an incredible holiday and saw/did so much and stayed in stunning hotels and lodges. It was everything we wished for and more and we got so much value for money. Everybody was so friendly and helpful and we felt that Andrew and the team went out of their way to make sure we had the best of everything. We would recommend pathway safaris to anybody and we would definitely rebook with them if we do another safari in the future! Read more Written 3 October 2023
  • 713sva 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fantastic safari experience provided by Pathway Safaris We had a fantastic safari experience provided by Pathway Safaris. From making the first contact until getting there, Andrew was always very responsive and provided all necessary information in addition to adjusting the itinerary according to our wish. We had the pleasure of having Andrew as our guide in addition to Thomas a our driver on the safari. They both took well care of us and ensured that we had a great experience. Seeing the wild animals was a blast, and we saw plenty of them. We had four days on safari (Tsavo East and Amboseli) and a few days on a beach hotel in Mombasa. The overall trip requires spending some time in a car, but definitely worth it. Hopefully we will get to do another safari in the future and we will for sure make use of the services provided by Andrew and Pathway Safaris. Read more Written 3 October 2023
  • VincentIoia 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Best Safari Ever I have NEVER been on such a wonderful experience as this in all my life. It's literally the trip of a lifetime. My wife put this trip together for us and we shared our experience with 20 others in four open road vehicles. What made it completely wondeful was Andrew and his crew of drivers and assistants. They are friendly, very knowledgable and took the initiative always to find us the best locations where the local wildlife could be viewed, most times, without mah other open road vehicles in our way. Our trip took us from Nairobi to Mombasa. We visited no less than 6 conservation preserves and stayed in a couple of swanky hotels but mostly in lodges with glamorous tent setups. My wife and I highly recommend taking a Safari and doing it with Andrew and his crew from Pathway Safaris. Read more Written 12 September 2023
  • Rem8694 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles 12 day Kenyan Safari We prebooked our safari with Andrew almost 2 years in advance. His communication via facebook and posting in a safari group was great, answering any questions we had. Safari itself and what we saw was amazing!! Upon arriving in Nairobi our driver from was there with Andrew to greet us and drive us to the hotel. Lodging was mostly good with the exception of a few issues like AA Amboselli lodge (burn that down)! There is no ac at any lodging, usually a fan. Mosquito netting and bug repellent at all which was a bonus. Always bottles of water for drinking and brushing teeth. Very rough terrain to get to the lodging once you got into the parks and reserves. Not good for elderly people or those with bad necks/backs/hips/knees or anyone who gets motion sickness. Power goes out everyday to reserve power at some like Samburu lodge. Which is fine when on game drives but not when you arrive 3 hours late with dead cell battery it sucks. There was no downtime built in and we had a very rushed Itinerary that we barely followed. Too many stops at curio shops where everyone sells the exact same thing. The logistics of tour was very disorganized with a lack of communication between the tour guides and driver. Someone was late every day, itineraries changed. Some things we didn't get to see like Masika Waterfall. Noone has any concept of driving times. We were told it was a 3-4 hr drive to each location and we would arrive by lunch before heading out for evening game drives at 4pm. Most days the trip took 5-6 hours and we arrived so late for lunch, closer to 230/3pm that we almost missed it and had to rush to eat, check in to our rooms and get ready to turn around and head right back out for 4pm game drive. We stayed at 9 dif places in 12 nights with the nicest ones being only a 1 night stay with absolutely no time to enjoy the camps. They definitely could have eliminated Samburu, giraffe center and chimpanzees all together in order to spend more time at some of the nicer places to build in more down time and use pool/spas. They were a waste of time. Also everyone was on a different page as to what time we were packing up and leaving in the mornings, and how long we would be traveling from place to place. It was as if no one did their research or used google maps to see how far a drive was from camp to camp, either our US trip planner didn't think to ask or Andrew didn't tell her. Again logistics and communication were terrible but all in all we had a great Safari trip. Read more Written 1 September 2023

  • Sabine W 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Do not do this tour! Living 30 years in South Africa, this was the worst "safari"I have ever been on! The 1st "game drive" was 50 km/h speeding from spot A to B. The "tour guide" drove past kudus, impalas, ostrich, Thompson's,hartebeest. If one guest wouldn't have asked to stop at giraffe/ elephants, we would have driven past them too. Per radio he was told about 2 lions and we stopped. He couldn't see them and I had to point out to him/guests. Sometimes he would laconically offer info: here eland. Nothing about the park, the animals etc. When people asked questions, he didn't know the answer. He ID 2 birds sitting in a branch next to car as tawny eagles - they were clearly Bateleurs. His excuse was that it was against the sun. I really felt for the three people being on their first African safari ! The vehicle had trash from previous trip and was not cleaned btw our drives either (lots of water bottles in the car). On the way back we had 3 bottles btw the 6 of us which were hygienically still floating in the warm water from day before. Never been on such an unprofessional tour in my life. The cherry on the top was that they refused to drop me off at my pickup point; after I indicated that I could take a tuktuk instead of a taxi back (to safe the company money). They conveniently read that such that I would pay for that, while drop off is included in their package price. Pathway Safaris? Pathetic Safaris! Read more Written 29 January 2023

  • Traveler57683216230 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles The worst experience! The tour canceled my trip at 7 pm the day before Safari as he said we have not enough customers. I had plan for my day, I stayed one more night in the hotel, and I took one more day off from my work to be in Mombasa for that trip and he just easily canceled it without taking any responsibilities. At least you should value other's time, plan, and.... He just said one-day trip is tricky and I mentioned the trip might be canceled if we cannot find enough passengers! while he asked for additional 300 USD to bring me alone to Safari, I asked my hotel reception and I found another guide that took me to the Safari alone with the same price! Literally my worst experience in Mombasa. He ruined my day as I was worried the whole day and he canceled at the end! Read more Written 7 September 2022

There could have been much more specific information given each morning as to the daily plan include a timeline of when we would hopefully arrive at our various destinations and when to expect lunch and dinner. Most importantly, time limitations needed to be stated at each shopping/bathroom stop. Read more Written 1 September 2022
  • Samm E 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles The best travel experience in Africa Our experience with Pathway Safaris has been phenomenal. Andrew has been helping me plan this trip for 18 months leading up to the date of our trip, and helped us modify our itinerary several times as well as changing the dates as our travel plans changed. He was extremely accommodating throughout the process and very friendly, kind and nice in helping us so much. On the trip itself, Andrew was there, along with a fabulous driver (Jonstone) and a personal guide (Baluku). The experience was positive and personalized to us. We did a 6 day vegan safari and gorilla trekking trip in Uganda and the accommodations and food were outstanding. I’ve never had more amazing food anywhere in my life - everything was especially made vegan just for us. The excursions were phenomenal and exceeded our expectations. Having Andrew as a personal travel agent, guide, and friend throughout our journey along with the help of Jonstone and Baluku really made it the best experience and we absolutely will use Pathway Safaris again in the future for any African travel. Highly recommend! Read more Written 29 August 2022

Mombasa City Tour Full Day

Mombasa city tour

Mombasa City Tour

Mombasa  has a long history the traces can be found from the writings of the 16th century making Mombasa city tour rich in heritage. Many traders did attempt to enforce their governance on the town due to its advantageously central location, where Arab influence is felt prominently till date.

The history of The Port of Mombasa dates back many centuries from the existence of the Old Port. The Port served dhows from India, Arabian Gulf and Far East. It is located near Fort Jesus at Mombasa Old Town. In 1890, Kenya and Uganda became a British Protectorate under the Imperial British East Africa.

The Portuguese also had their influence on the port that changed the face of the land by burning it almost three times. Believed that Vasco da Gama was the first known European to visit Mombasa, whose purpose of exploration was to spread the Christian faith to further expand Portugal’s trading area. Mombasa became Portugal’s main trading centre of spices, cotton and coffee, where Fort Jesus was constructed. The Fort served as the major center for trading goods that protected the Portuguese from conflicts with locals the remains of which still attracts a great deal of tourists and visitors. As slavery was highly practiced during that era, the local slaves were exchanged for goods.

Colonization perpetuated in Mombasa that promoted European culture over the town and the Kenyan lands. Like in India, the British gained momentum and established control of the port. They even completed a railway line in the early 1900’s from Mombasa to Uganda which is perhaps the major landmark in the history of Mombasa. Thus, from 1887 to 1907, Mombasa remained the capital of the British East Africa Protectorate

Whether on a Full Day or half day Mombasa city tour is a must do when at the coastal beach holiday in Kenya. This gives one insight understanding not only of the beaches but life in this beautiful island. Served with only 3 entrance, Mombasa Island can be accessed from Makupa bridge from Nairobi Mombasa highway, Nyali bridge from the north and through likoni ferry from south coast (Diani).

During full day Mombasa city tour, places to visit includes; Visit the historical and cultural sites, visit Bamburi Nature Trail, and Fort Jesus with lunch included at the famous the Tamarind Dhow.

Fort Jesu s is a must visit during Mombasa city tour. The Fort, built by  the Portuguese  in 1593-1596 to the designs of Giovanni Battista Cairati to protect the port of Mombasa, is one of the most outstanding and well preserved examples of 16th Portuguese military fortification and a landmark in the history of this type of construction.

Haller Park is a nature park in Bamburi, Mombasa, on the Kenyan coast. It is the transformation of a quarry wasteland into an ecological area. Haller Park holds a variety of plant and animal species which serve as a recreation spot for tourists and locals. During the tour of the park and its museum, African safari wildlife would be spotted with a well secure nature trails. Such animals include impala, monkeys, baboons, hippo, buffalos, giraffe, tortoise, snakes at the snake park among others.

Akamba handcraft tops the list of places to visit while on Mombasa city tour. Here you will find all nature of calving from all African wildlife to various artifacts sold locally and internationally.

However city tour of Mombasa is never complete without a tour of the old town where old housing dating 19th century are the main icons, and main street Moi avenue where Mombasa trademark tusks are found. Likoni ferry and newly done and built mama ngina water front are a must visit when on Mombasa city tour .

Although the driver attended promptly at 6 am we then spent 40 minutes at the door of the Safari for him to try to pay for the tickets as clearly this was not organised. The facility of the van was beyond disgusting. Every part of it was either ripped torn or broken with the most uncomfortable seats I’ve ever sat on. It was dirty smelly and truly not a good place to be for six hours on bumpy roads. Although the guide was knowledgeable, I have to say how I known how poor this experience would have been with him And if I had longer in Kenya I would’ve refused to use the vehicle. to put into perspective. I left my cellphone in the jeep and he very patiently drove back in the rain (and got stuck in the mud) just to bring it back to me. He went above and beyond. I highly recommend him. • soniagO4444IE 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles The best safari experience ever. Balloon flight was breathtaking . Our guide was exceptional! This was my first safari and it was amazing. Our guide was called Dennis ( not his official name obviously) I think we were very lucky to have him. He is very committed and certainly knows the animals and their habitats very well. A real love for them and passionate about his work. We got to see every single animal that we had hoped to. Even on our very last morning we were supposed to be going for a quick drive and jokingly requested that we hadn’t seen a rhinoceros 🦏…he didn’t bring us back until we had 🥰 Dennis went above and beyond each time he took us out, and certainly didn’t rush to get us back. The staff were also really friendly and accommodating, my only criticism sadly was on the morning we left one of the party had a nasty fall. Again the staff that saw it happen were very concerned and tried to help. They were finally able to get the guest to reception and again Dennis was there to take us to the air strip. He was shocked to see the state of the guest but was assured a few plasters were needed to get us to the airport then we could see a First Aider. He went off to find the nurse to get some help and she wouldn’t come out and said to get the person to hospital. This was totally unnecessary and there was a plane to catch. Dennis was very upset by the nurses lack of care….as were all of us. Read more Written March 10, 2024

The conservancy has a lot to offer in terms of wildlife and it was thrilling to see rhinos, lions, giraffes and a whole host of other beautiful species. It also has a sanctuary for rescued chimpanzees. The lodge (Serena) looks out over the natural wilderness where we could see rhino and buffalo and various types of gazelle, antelope and warthog. And we heard a lion roaring at night! And lots of great birds from eagles to secretary birds and rollers We loved our tent...very well equipped and comfortable and we appreciated the little touches like the hot water bottles at night! • saa944 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Really bad Booked this from the UK as our first experience of a Kenyan Safari, however we were significantly disappointed. Sevea items noted in the listing are false advertising It is definitely a budget safari despite it stating "mid-luxury acccomodation" on the listing. The accommodation itself has not been maintained - toilet was not flushable until 10 minutes after the last person used it. Breakfast and lunch were basic options- toast and egg, and pasta and veg. The listing also stated that water was included. This is not the case so come prepared. Water is only included when you are on the safari truck- not in the accommodation. Be prepared to purchase water during breakfast, lunch and dinner. I personally liaised with Sylvia before booking to confirm dietary requirements. I was told that either halal or vegetarian options would be available. The picnic lunch provided had Ham with no alternatives. This meant we had to eat the muffin and fruit instead - there are no places to purchase alternative food when in the masai mara Park. Another discrepancy with the listing is the 3 day safari and description. It was actually a 1.5 day safari. The last day was spent at the masai village ($20 entrance fee plus $$$$ in tips which are requested). Come with small dollar bills as tips are expected from everyone you interact with. The customer service after was also ridiculous with Sylvia mentioning that we were the only ones with the issue. This isn't true as there was a vegetarian in our group who also raised the same issue. Really disappointing Read more Written February 29, 2024

Venice tests a 5-euro fee for day-trippers as the city grapples with overtourism

VENICE, Italy — Under the gaze of the world's media, the fragile lagoon city of Venice launched a pilot program Thursday to charge day-trippers a 5-euro (around $5.35) entry fee that authorities hope will discourage visitors from arriving on peak days and make the city more livable for its dwindling residents.

Visitors arriving at Venice's main train station were greeted with large signs listing the 29 dates through July of the plan's test phase that also designated separate entrances for tourists, and residents, students and workers.

"We need to find a new balance between the tourists and residents,'' said Simone Venturini, the city's top tourism official. "We need to safeguard the spaces of the residents, of course, and we need to discourage the arrival of day-trippers on some particular days."

Not all residents, however, are persuaded of the efficacy of the new system in dissuading mass tourism , insisting that only a resurgence in the population will restore balance to a city where narrow alleyways and water buses are often clogged with tourists.

Hundreds of Venetians protested against the program, marching festively though the city's main bus terminal behind banners reading "No to Tickets, Yes to Services and Housing." Protesters scuffled briefly with police with riot gear who blocked them from entering the city, before changing course and entering over another bridge escorted by plainclothes police. The demonstration wrapped up peacefully in a piazza.

Tourists arriving at the main station encountered almost as many journalists as stewards on hand to politely guide anyone unaware of the new requirements through the process of downloading the QR code to pay the fee.

Arianna Cecilia, a tourist from Rome visiting Venice for the first time, said she thought it was "strange" to have to pay to enter a city in her native country, and be funneled through separate entrance ways for tourists. She and her boyfriend were staying in nearby Treviso, and so downloaded the QR code as required, but she was still caught off-guard while soaking in her first view ever of Venice's canals by the sight of the entrance signs and her boyfriend telling her to get out the ticket.

On the other side of the entrance ways, workers in yellow vests carried out random checks at the train station. Transgressors faces fines of 50 to 300 euros ($53 to $320), but officials said "common sense" was being applied for the launch.

The requirement applies only for people arriving between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Outside of those hours, access is free and unchecked.

Venice has long suffered under the pressure of overtourism, and officials hope that the pilot project can help provide more exact figures to better manage the phenomenon.

The city can track the number of hotel visitors, which last year numbered 4.6 million and is down 16% from pre-pandemic highs. But the number of day visitors, which make up the majority of the crowds in Venice, could only be estimated until recently.

A Smart Control Room set up during the pandemic has been tracking arrivals from cellphone data, roughly confirming pre-pandemic estimates of 25 million to 30 million arrivals a year, said Michele Zuin, the city's top economic official. That includes both day-trippers and overnight guests.

But Zuin said the data is incomplete.

"It's clear we will get more reliable data from the contribution" being paid by day-trippers, he said.

Venturini said the city is strained when the number of day-trippers reaches 30,000 to 40,000. On peak days, local police set up one-way traffic for pedestrians to keep the crowds moving.

Residents opposing the day-tripper tax insist that the solution to Venice's woes are to boost the resident population and the services they need, limiting short-term rentals to make available more housing and attract families back from the mainland.

Last year, Venice passed a telling milestone when the number of tourist beds exceeded for the first time the number of official residents, which is now below 50,000 in the historic center with its picturesque canals.

"Putting a ticket to enter a city will not decrease not even by one single unit the number of visitors that are coming,'' said Tommaso Cacciari, an activist who organized a protest Thursday against the measure.

"You pay a ticket to take the metro, to go to a museum, an amusement park. You don't pay a ticket to enter a city. This is the last symbolic step of a project of an idea of this municipal administration to kick residents out of Venice," he said.

Venice officials expected paid day-tripper arrivals Thursday to reach about 10,000. More than 70,000 others had downloaded a QR code denoting an exemption, including to work in Venice or as a resident of the Veneto region. Hotels in Venice, including in mainland districts like Marghera or Mestre, should provide a QR code attesting to their stay, which includes a hotel tax.

Venturini, the tourist official, said that interest in Venice's pilot program has been keen from other places suffering from mass tourism, including other Italian art cities, and municipalities abroad such as Barcelona, Spain, and Amsterdam.

But Marina Rodino, who has lived in Venice for 30 years, doesn't see the fee as the cure-all. Neighboring apartments in her residential building near the famed Rialto Bridge once inhabited by families are now short-term apartment rentals.

The corner butcher shop closed. Yet she noted that the new entrance fee requirement will still allow young people to flood the city in the evening for the traditional aperitivo, which can grow rowdy.

She was passing out mock European Union passports for "Venice, Open City," underlining the irony of the new system, and challenging its legal standing with citations from the Italian Constitution guaranteeing its citizens the right to "move or reside freely in any part of the national territory."

"This is not a natural oasis. This is not a museum. It is not Pompeii. It is a city, where we need to fight so the houses are inhabited by families, and stores reopen. That is what would counter this wild tourism,'' Rodino said.
